Huawei to launch laptops and tablets in India soon

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then Huawei is planning on launching more than just smartphones in the country. It looks like the Chinese giant will launch laptops and tablets in India as well. There is no information on when these devices will launch, nor which models will come first to the Indian shores. Jim Xu, Vice President, Huawei Consumer Business Group told a group of journalists, “India is now a Tier-1 country for us and we will make new investments in the country to bring to the Indian consumers the benefits of new technology as early as possible. We are making strategic investments in the PC business. In the smartphone segment, Honor will continue to do their business as usual even as we plan to increase the presence of Huawei-branded phones” If India is a tier one market for the company it only makes sense for Huawei to launch a diverse portfolio of their offerings in the country. At MWC 2018, Huawei unveiled a new MateBook X Pro laptop and the MediaPad M5 tablet. Both the devices are aimed to provide a better viewing experience and come with a 91 percent and 82 percent screen-to-body ratio respectively. The laptop is powered by up to 8th-gen Intel processor and comes with a discrete GeForce MX150 GPU. You can read more about it here. Moving to the tablet, the MediaPad M5 comes in 8.5-inch and two 10.8-inch display size models. They are powered by a Kirin 960 chipset and feature a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels. The 10.8-inch Pro variant offers a desktop-like experience which can be accessed via a detachable keyboard dock. You can read about the tablets in detail here. Xu said, "We understand the importance of offline business. We may shortly open either exclusive Huawei brand shops or Huawei display zone or display desks in India." Huawei won’t be the only one starting its own dedicated offline experience centres in the country. OnePlus and Xiaomi already have their experience centres for consumers to experience their products. Xiaomi recently opened its Mi Home store in Bengaluru, where consumers can not only purchase products available in India, but also experience Xiaomi products that are yet to launch in the country.

OnePlus 6 gets OnePlus 6Ts Nightscape and Studio Lighting camera features with latest OxygenOS beta

When it launched, the OnePlus 6T was marketed with two new features called Nightscape and Studio Lighting in the camera. According to OnePlus, Nightscape uses AI to enhance the photos taken in low-light conditions and the Studio Lighting feature augments the minute details in an image. The company has now announced the OxygenOS Open Beta 6 for OnePlus 6, which makes the smartphone inherit these features from the OnePlus 6T. “Here is the latest open beta build for OnePlus 6, some of the most exciting features that we introduced on the OnePlus 6T are now available on OnePlus 6!” the company said in a blogpost. The beta update also adds new navigation gestures, improved UI for “About phone”, and improvements for taking screenshots. The beta also adds the November Android security patch to the phone. Further, there is a new Google quick search box design, while the Gallery will gets an improved zooming gesture and magnification. Like most of their hardware, the OnePlus 6T and the OnePlus 6 have the same camera and this could be a reason why these feature may work seamlessly on both the phones. The smartphones have a 16MP Sony IMX 519 primary sensor with 1.22um pixel pitch and f/1.7 aperture lens, combined with a secondary 20MP Sony IMX 376K with 1.0um pixel size and f/1.7 aperture lens. Both lenses are also electronically and optically stabilised and they offer a 25mm focal length. You can read our analyses of the camera-centric features here.

Gmail for iOS users can now toggle between multiple accounts from a single inbox

Google has announced that it is bringing a new feature to the Gmail for iOS app that will let people check emails from multiple Google accounts without having to leave that account via the switcher on the top of the navigation bar. Google says that its launching both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release, which will be available to all G Suite editions. This gradual rollout will take up to 15 days to be visible in the app. Once the update is done, users can see emails from different accounts by simply selecting the “All Inboxes” view from the left-hand side drawer which appears by tapping the navigation button on the top left corner of the screen. The inbox will show all your emails in a single list, “but don’t worry—no emails will be shared between your accounts,” Google said in a blog post. The feature has been available for Android for quite a long time.   The announcement comes a  few weeks after Google rolled out AI capabilities to send notifications for high priority mails. The importance of the email will be determined by leveraging Google’s machine learning and AI. The feature will help users get rid of alerts for spam and other not-so-important mails. Google will also shut down the Inbox by Google email service in March 2019 after 4 years of its existence. The company had stated that it will now shift its focus solely on Gmail service.

Poco F1 will receive updates to both Android P and Android Q, Jai Mani confirms

The Poco F1 has been praised for the set of features it offers for the price it retails for. It packs flagship-grade hardware for prices that are much, much lower than the OnePlus 6 or the new OnePlus 6T. The phone relies on a customised version of MIUI called Poco launcher which keeps getting updated with the latest security patch as well as to MIUI 10. Now, a tweet by Jai Mani confirms that the Poco F1 will also receive update for Android 9.0 Pie as well as Android Q in the future. The Tweet was in a response to a user’s query posed to Mani, asking for at least two version upgrades. Mani went ahead and put it on record. A 2-year update cycle is the same as what Android One devices promise and those that release this year will receive the update to Android P and Android Q as well. The Poco F1 has shaped up to be quite the contender for a high-end smartphone under a budget. It’s the most affordable Snapdragon 845-powered phone that is coupled with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. It also has a notched 5.99-inch LCD panel with FHD+ resolution. It’s also regularly updated with bug fixes based on customer feedback. The Poco F1 is quite popular among enthusiasts and has seen a lot of third-party development of custom ROMs, kernels, etc. The Poco Launcher itself is a customised version of MIUI, and the primary difference is the presence of an app drawer. The phone comes with MIUI 9.6 out of the box while the update to MIUI 10 will roll out soon globally. The phone recent fixed some compatibility issues in PubG Mobile, and has also addressed the lack of Widevine L1 certification which prevents the phone from streaming videos in HD. Poco has promised a beta update in Q4 that will reportedly fix the streaming issue.

Microsoft test shows 83 of new PCs sold in select Asian countries, including India have malware-infected pirated software

Microsoft has conducted a PC purchasing probe and examined a total of 166 new PCs from nine Asian markets, including India, Korea, Singapore, and Vietnam, and has found that four in five, which is approximately 83 percent, brand new PCs in these targeted countries are loaded with pirated software which makes these machines a fertile ground for Cybercriminals to exploit. The PC samples selected were purchased from retailers that offered computers at much lower prices, bundled with free software to lure customers. In several cases, these retailers also sold pirated software at their stores. “Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their techniques to evade security measures, and embedding their malware into pirated software is one of their tactics as it allows them to compromise large numbers of PCs and access vast amount of stolen credentials with ease. When vendors sell pirated software containing malware in their PCs, they are not only fueling the spread of malware in the region but are also putting their customers’ personal information and digital identity at the mercy of cybercriminals,” Mary Jo Schrade, Assistant General Counsel and Regional Director, Digital Crimes Unit, Microsoft Asia, said in a statement. Microsoft says that the sweep is aimed to educate consumers and owners of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region and provide them insights on the prevalence of new PCs loaded with pirated software and the risks that they can pose to individuals and businesses. The company found that one of the most common practices for vendors installing pirated software on new PCs is to turn off the security features, such as anti-virus software and Windows Defender as doing this allows them to run the hack-tools needed to activate the pirated software. The process, however, leaves PCs vulnerable to malware and other cyberthreats. The probe also uncovered that the new PCs loaded with pirated software were infected with some type of malware, with the most common being Trojans and viruses. While Trojans are employed to gain remote access and control of devices for spying on the users and steal private data, viruses can cause infected computers to do a variety of things which are not beneficial to the PC owner, such as terminating devices’ security features, sending spam messages, and contacting remote hosts to download additional malware. Mary Jo says that using genuine software is the first line of defense against cybercriminals and “the most fundamental step that users can take to safeguard themselves digitally is to always insist on buying PCs from established retailers and not ones that also sell pirated software, and ensuring they are getting genuine software.” Besides using the genuine software, people should keep it updated with the latest security patches, which are always free. Safe internet practices like not visiting potentially dangerous websites, such as those that offer adult content, illegal downloads, and pirated software, as well as file sharing portals will also keep PC users safe.

Best Smart Speakers and Portable Bluetooth Speakers to buy or gift this Diwali

Diwali is all about coming together and celebrating and what’s celebration without a little music? Speakers, both portable Bluetooth ones and smart ones always make for good gifting ideas. Amazon’s Alexa-enabled speakers can be used to entertain children, get information without having to look at your phone, and play music by just asking for it. Portable Bluetooth speakers are also quite useful in the sense that they allow you to take your music outside, or play from anywhere. After all, what’s Diwali without a little entertainment?    UE Wonderboom  Price: Rs 5,4999   The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom, for the price of Rs 5,999 is a damn good portable speaker with a thumping sound output. Amazon will also open up Skype support for the Echo Spot improving the usability. It’s just a cool device to have by your side (just a little creepy because of the camera on it).    Click here to buy the Amazon Echo Spot   Google Home Mini Price: Rs 4,449   Amazon is not the only smart speaker ecosystem to choose. The Harrier is Tata’s long-awaited SUV that’s slated for an early 2019 launch in India. According to a recent press release by Tata Motors, the first Harrier has just rolled out of Tata’s new assembly line in Pune. The SUV is being built in an assembly line that is 90-percent automated. Set up within six months’ time, the new assembly line borrows manufacturing processes from Jaguar Land Rover, a subsidiary of Tata Motors Limited. Talking about the upcoming Harrier SUV, Mayank Pareek, President of Tata’s Passenger Vehicle Business Unit said, “We have been receiving a tremendous response from the customers ever since we opened bookings of the Harrier, a fortnight ago. With the all- new assembly line ready and the roll out of the 1st Harrier, we are now gearing up to start deliveries in early 2019. The Harrier, with its stunning design will definitely appeal to customers, especially those who have eagerly waited for the product since its showcase as the H5X concept at the Auto Expo 2018. We are confident that the Harrier will set new benchmarks in the SUV segment, in 2019.” The Tata Harrier is a five-seater sport utility vehicle built on a monocoque frame. It uses a proprietary Omega Modular Efficient Global Architecture (OMEGA) borrowed from Land Rover’s tried-and-tested D8 architecture. Apple iPad Pro costs a whopping 649 to repair making Apple Care a must have

Apple announced the new iPad Pro 11-inch and iPad Pro 12.9-inch variants at an event hosted in New York. The new iPad Pro models are aimed squarely at power users and creative professionals with their incredible display and an updated Apple Pencil. Not to mention the A12X Bionic chip that supposedly puts desktop-grade performance into what is essentially a tablet. Of course, the iPad Pros are not cheap and turns out, neither is getting them repaired. The official iPad Service and Repair page has been updated to reflect the cost of repair for the new iPad Pro models. In case you were to break the display on the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, you will have to fork out $649 to get it fixed. A new 12.9-inch iPad Pro will cost you $999 for the 64GB variant, although India prices are a little higher. However, if you do get Apple Care+, the repair cost comes down to $49, a considerably lower amount. Apple Care+ itself costs $129 but given the cost of repairing the new iPad Pro outside of Apple Care+, the $129 price for extended coverage seems like a bargain. The revised cost of repair/replacement is listed out for all the iPad models in the chart below. Apple’s devices have been getting increasingly expensive, as is the price to have them repaired, making Apple Care+ look not just like a good idea, but also a great bargain. Apple Care+ extends the warranty on the iPad to two years and includes coverage for two incidents of accidental damage. Given that a cracked display is the most common reasons to avail service, getting Apple Care+ to reduce the burden of repair would be a wise decision.

Facebook user growth sluggish as company misses Wall Street estimates once again

The world is used to seeing Facebook posting a substantial growth every quarter but since last quarter, the social media giant has been posting a marginal increase in its revenue. Multiple controversies around data breaches and fake news put the company on a sticky wicket this year. Back in July, more than $100 billion were wiped out from Facebook's market value after the company reported Q2 2018 numbers that showed stagnation in Daily Active Users. Problems seem to have continued to hit Facebook’s revenues in the third quarter, as once again, it posted a marginal increase compared to the last quarter and narrowly missed Wall Street’s estimates. The company reported that revenue increased 33% during the thirs quarter to $13.72 billion, which is lower than the average Wall Street estimate of $13.78 billion. User growth on Facebook also seems to have stalled. FactSet and StreetAccount estimated that the Daily Active Users (DAUs) on Facebook would reach 1.51 billion mark but Facebook says that it could touch the 1.49 billion number. Similarly, Monthly Active Users (MAUs) were estimated to be 2.29 billion but Facebook notes that it reached the 2.27 billion mark. The company matched the average revenue per user: $6.09 versus $6.09 estimated, per 2.29 billion, according to Street Account. Citing Facebook’s earnings announcement, CNBC pointed out the revenue estimates by several analysts. Facebook said that its earnings per share (EPS) in the third quarter, which ended on September 30, was $1.76 versus $1.47 estimated by Refinitv -- a only silver lining. The total revenue was $13.73 billion which was estimated to be $13.78 billion as per Refinitiv.   Operational and Other Financial Highlights 1) The 1.49 billion DAUs on average for September show an increase of 9 percent year-over-year. 2) The 2.27 billion MAUs as of September 30 is an increase of 10 percent year-over-year. 3) Facebook’s mobile advertising revenue represented approximately 92 percent of advertising revenue for the third quarter of 2018, which is up from approximately 88 percent of advertising revenue in the quarter a year ago. 4) Facebook hired a lot of people since last year, and the headcount was reported to be 33,606 as of September 30, which is an increase of 45 percent. In last quarter, the headcount was reported to be 30,275. 5) In addition, Facebook estimates that more than 2.6 billion people now use Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, or Messenger each month, and over 2 billion people use at least one of its “Family of services” every day on average. In the last quarter, the number was reported to be 2.5 billion. When it comes to Facebook’s future plans, company CEO Mark Zuckerberg thinks that people would lay more emphasis on privacy. “Public sharing will always be very important but people want to share privately too. People feel more comfortable being themselves when they know their content is only seen by a small group and when they know it won’t be around forever,” Zuckerberg said on an earnings call. On the several controversies surrounding the company, the top executive said, “The upcoming elections will be a real test of the protections we've put in place. With a community of more than 2 billion people, we will see all the good and bad that humanity can do, and we will never be perfect.”

Apples T2 security chip on new MacBook Air and Mac Mini is more secure than we thought

Apple published, during the launch of its new hardware yesterday in New York City, a full security guide for its T2 security chip, which does duty on the new MacBook Air, the new Mac Mini, and the current MacBook Pro. According to TechCrunch, who was the first to dig into the guide, the T2 security chip comes with a hardware microphone disconnect feature for added security.  According to Apple’s security guide, the hardware microphone disconnect feature physically kills the connection between the microphone and the rest of the hardware every time the lid of the MacBook is closed. This is done to prevent any software (with root or kernel privileges) either on macOS or on the T2 security chip from accessing the microphone. The security guide goes on to say that the camera does get disconnected in the same way because closing the lid anyway obstructs its field of view. At the end of the security guide, Apple adds confidently, “The features of the Apple T2 Security Chip are made possible by the combination of silicon design, hardware, software, and services available only from Apple. These capabilities combine to provide unrivaled privacy and security features never before present on Mac.” Apple’s words sound convincing, especially considering how only last month almost all Macs except the ones sporting T2 were reportedly found vulnerable to an unexpected cold boot attack. The T2’s unique feature, where connection to the microphone is physically removed, should go a considerable distance in preventing eavesdropping on a closed MacBook as no malicious software can reconnect something that’s physically removed. The T2 chip is also responsible for controlling audio output, solid-state drives, the System Management Controller (SMC), and the Touch ID sensor.

Google Pixel 3 XL notch bug gives the phone two display notches, fix coming soon

If you thought Google Pixel 3 XL’s big and bulky notch was enough to put you off, you were wrong. While several handset users (hilariously) reported that their devices grew another notch on the sides of the display, some were really annoyed at the glitch. The virtual notch was not seen at one particular position, and while some said it appeared on the left edge, some side the second notch grew on the right side. Luckily, Google is aware of the problem and says that it will fix it soon. The problem was first reported by UrAvgConsumer who posted a tweet on October 25. Although there is no exact explanation of what caused this glitch, according to Slashgear, there is a possibility that a rogue developer settings could have been enabled. This might have confused the auto-rotate on the phone possibly causing the faux notch stuck in the wrong place. The tech news platform says that Android offers coders the ability to add a virtual notch to their phone so that they can test under development apps to see how they work when run on a device with a notch on the screen. According to AndroidPolice, Google reached out to them to let the publication know that “not only is the company aware of this highly anomalous behaviour, but that a fix should be coming soon”. Google launched the third generation of Pixel smartphones on October 9. In our review, we listed the notch as one of the cons of the smartphone. The notch contains the earpiece which doubles up as one half of the stereo speaker setup, neatly sandwiched between two front-facing cameras.
