Sundar Pichai: Five quotes on 25 years of Google, future of search and AI

When the CEO of Google and Alphabet writes a 2,400 word blog piece, obviously everyone sat up and took notice -- so did I. If you're not interested in reading Sundar Pichai's blog on 25 years of Google, then I invite you to go through the following five quotes that reveal as much about the man himself as it does about Google's current and future aspirations, especially in the realm of AI across all its products.

1) Sundar Pichai on his personal experiences with technology

“How I communicated with my dad all those years ago compared with how my son communicates today shows just how much change can happen across generations. Technology that takes us years to adapt to is second nature for our kids.”

This quote reflects Pichai's personal connection with technology and how he has witnessed its evolution firsthand over the past three decades or more. It highlights the rapid pace of technological advancement and how different generations adapt differently to tech.

2) Google's core mission and its impact on the world

“Larry and Sergey first wrote down our mission 25 years ago: to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. The idea that a student in rural Indonesia could access the same information as a professor at Stanford was revolutionary, and has changed lives and our world for the better.”

This passage in Pichai's blog highlights Google's commitment to making information universally accessible and underscores the transformative impact this mission has had globally in the past 25 years.

3) Google's willingness to innovate and take risks

“Of course, not every question we asked ended up as a success. In any 25-year journey, you take a few lumps, learn the lessons and work to do better. Remember Google Wave?”

Here, Pichai acknowledges some of Google's missteps, writing that not all of Google's endeavors have been successful. Beyond Google Wave, I can think of Google Plus, Knol, Allo, Google Glass, and so many more examples, but who's counting? Pichai writes that it showcases Google's resilience, willingness to learn from mistakes, and constant commitment to innovation.

4) Google's commitment to responsible AI tech implementation

“As excited as we are about the potential of AI to benefit people and society, we understand that AI, like any early technology, poses complexities and risks. Our development and use of AI must address these risks, and help to develop the technology responsibly.”

Pichai underscores that Google's ensuring that their technological advancements, especially in AI, are developed with a sense of responsibility and ethics, acknowledging the complex nature of challenges that come with it.

5) Google's future aspirations and the transformative power of technology

“Still, there is so much more ahead. Over time, AI will be the biggest technological shift we see in our lifetimes. It’s a fundamental rewiring of technology and an incredible accelerant of human ingenuity. Making AI more helpful for everyone, and deploying it responsibly, is the most important way we’ll deliver on our mission for the next 10 years and beyond.”

This emphasises both Pichai's and Google's belief in the potential of AI and their commitment to harnessing it for the betterment of society while ensuring it aligns with their core mission.

At a time when Google's supremacy in search is getting challenged stronger than ever, I think each of these quotes provides insights into the values, beliefs, and vision of Sundar Pichai and Google as a company as they chart their journey into the future.

New Intel Xeon chips fffer 240-percent more performance per watt but how

Intel has announced two new Xeon processors, Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids, at Hot Chips 2023. These processors are part of an effort to reduce electricity consumption in data centres, which is a significant concern for technology companies. Intel also revealed for the first time, the performance per watt of its upcoming data center chips. The company disclosed that its "Sierra Forest" chip would have 240% better performance per watt than its current generation of data centre chips.

This announcement is particularly notable given the increasing pressure on technology firms to reduce energy consumption, a key driver for the development of more efficient chips. The push towards energy efficiency is not unique to Intel; Ampere Computing, a startup founded by ex-Intel executives, was the first to market with a chip focused on efficient cloud computing work, and AMD has also announced similar products. This competitive landscape underscores the industry-wide effort to develop solutions that can handle more computing work per chip while consuming less power.

Ronak Singhal, a senior fellow at Intel, highlighted the practical implications of the new chips for data centre operators. He noted that Intel's customers could consolidate older software onto a smaller number of computers inside a data centre, leading to significant power savings and a lower total cost of ownership. "I may have things that are four or five, six years old. I can get power savings by moving something that's currently on five, 10, or 15 different servers into a single new chip," Singhal said.

"That density drives their total cost of ownership. The higher the density, the fewer systems they need." This insight provides a clear picture of how the new "Sierra Forest" and "Granite Rapids" chips can address specific challenges faced by data centre operators, ultimately contributing to more sustainable and cost-effective operations.

How do Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids Xeon chips offer higher PPW?

Sierra Forest

Sierra Forest is designed for efficiency and uses Sierra Glen E-cores, while Granite Rapids is designed for performance and uses Redwood Cove P-cores. Intel claims that Sierra Forest will provide better rack density and higher performance per watt of power used compared to its previous generation of Xeon chips. On the other hand, Granite Rapids will offer better performance in mixed artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, partly due to an improvement in memory bandwidth.

Also read: Maximize your gaming potential: Here are the top 13th Gen Intel® Core™ laptops to go beyond performance on gaming!

The new processors have a tile-based architecture, which means they are made up of different components (tiles) that can be combined in various ways to create multiple products. Some input/output (I/O) functions are separated into two HSIO chiplets, while the CPU cores and memory controllers are on dedicated compute chiplets. These components are connected by EMIB (Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge) interconnects.

New Intel chips

Granite Rapids is seen as a traditional data center processor, equipped only with P-cores that deliver full performance. In contrast, Sierra Forest consists of chips with only smaller efficiency cores, optimized for power efficiency, area efficiency, and performance density. Both processors support PCIe 5.0/CXL 2.0, have up to 6 UPI links, and include accelerators for compression, cryptography, and data streaming. Each HSIO die also includes power control circuitry that manages the compute chiplets.

Intel plans to release Sierra Forest in the first half of 2024, followed by Granite Rapids. This release will coincide with the launch of AMD's 5th-gen EPYC Turin chips, leading to a high-performance battle between Intel and AMD. AMD's Bergamo, already on the market, has a similar approach to Sierra Forest, using dense Zen 4c cores. Intel also plans to release a second-gen E-core-powered processor, Clearwater Forest, in 2025.

You can now create a WhatsApp Group with no name, no we arent joking

Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp has another new feature. This time, the app is catering to those who struggle with naming their new group chats on the instant messaging app. The new feature allows you to now create groups without having a name. The feature was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and has started rolling out to all users.

With the new feature, WhatsApp has made naming a group optional. The feature, however, is limited to groups that have up to six people added. When users try to make a group with six people, they don't need to add a name. However, if you try to create a group with more people, naming it will become mandatory.

ChatGPT App for Android allows only 5 questions: You must give it a try

Artificial Intelligence is spreading all over the world like a wildfire. People are loving AI because it is making the most complicated work complete in seconds. OpenAI launched the ChatGPT earlier this year after that the company rolled out an app for iOS users. Interestingly, the ChatGPT app is now available for Android users as well. However, the application also comes with a drawback that is questions’ limitation.

The ChatGPT app for Android can be downloaded from Google Play Store now. OpenAI has launched the application in four countries for now. The countries are the US, India, Brazil and Bangladesh. OpenAI will most likely release the application in more countries in the coming days just as it rolls out the iOS app.

OpenAI

The application makes the process even quicker. However, in Android, you can only ask five questions from the chat-bot if you are a random user, unlike the website or the iOS app. When the limit of five questions has been crossed, it will ask you to either upgrade to Premium or send an invite to ChatGPT to 10 members. This will allow you 10 more questions to ask from chat-bot.

Bing Chat has been recently rolled out in Chrome and Safari. Unlike the ChatGPT app for Android, it allows its users five questions per session. When you are done with five questions, just start a new conversation and you are good to go. However, this renewal of conversation can’t be seen in the ChatGPT app for Android yet.

OpenAI

In addition to that, OpenAI has recently stopped the services of its AI Classifier, which helped in detecting the AI generated texts. The AI company has not even announced the news publicly. But when the users found out that it’s not working, the company blamed the low rate of accuracy of AI Classifier.

Google Bard praises Orca as a very promising development in the field of AI

We asked Google Bard what it thinks of Microsoft Orca. It not only responded (while ChatGPT didn’t), but it also has a positive opinion. Let’s see what Bard has to say about Orca.

We first asked what’s Bard’s take on Orca LLM.

Hey Google Bard, what do you think of Orca?

Google Bard was firstly confused about Orca LLM and another Microsoft tool by the same name which was used to customize MSI packages. It said it is not aware of any relation between Microsoft Orca and the Orca LLM model.

When I clarified I want to know about Orca LLM, Bard said Orca is “a significant development in the field of AI”.

It even said Orca has “the potential to challenge the dominance of GPT-4”.

Bard also listed down the things it likes about Orca:

1. Orca is open-source which means it can be used and modified by anyone. That is better for research and development. It can also open up the scope for new applications. LLM developers can also use it to cook custom specialized apps.

Also Read: Microsoft Orca challenges ChatGPT and the future of AI as we know

2. It highlights the use of explanation traces by Orca to learn from GPT-4 and other bigger LLMs. Explanation traces is like a map or record of all the steps taken by an LLM as it generates text or a response. It lets Orca know what a word or phrase means, and what action it should take based on those string of words.

3. It notes how the smaller size of the Orca makes it more efficient and scalable.

Is Orca a threat to Bard?

Google Bard

Bard thinks these differences make it and Orca complementary tools. While Orca offers efficiency and scalability (as aforementioned), Bard is confident that it will be better at tasks that require power and flexibility.

We agree with Bard that healthy competition is good for the AI industry and we look forward to what developers do with Orca.

Microsoft Orca challenges ChatGPT and the future of AI as we know

Microsoft has unleashed Orca, a new large language model that could underpin the future of AI chatbots like ChatGPT. It is fairly smaller (13 billion parameters) than its popular counterparts but has already outsmarted Open AI’s ChatGPT and even given GPT 4 model (supposedly with 1 trillion parameters) a run for its money in some benchmarks. Speaking of money, it costs very little for training in comparison to these biggies. Also, it’s open-source. Well, that is the most special thing about it and guess, we should’ve started with it.

Anyways, let’s learn how its design and working matters to both contemporary and future AI research and development.

How Orca works and how it’s better than GPT

Before we get to Orca, let’s understand the pain point it is trying to solve.

For training any really large language models (LLMs) like Open AI’s GPT 4 or Google’s LaMDA or PaLM 2, it takes billions. That is millions each for collecting good data, training, refining, and reinforcing the learning with human feedback.

Also Read: 4 new features of the newly launched GPT 4 that make ChatGPT an advanced multimodal chatbot

Not all companies, let alone small research groups have this kind of money. Plus, GPT 4 and the likes are too powerful and polymath for their own good. The clients of these LLMs may not need all of this knowledge and chops. So, something cheaper, but at the same time more specialized, if you will, is what these clients need.

Orca not only fulfils these two requirements but is also smarter in some respects.

This is thanks to the way it is designed to learn things.

It learns from, or should we say imitates GPT 4 and similar LLM models. But it not only grasps what GPT 4 does but also how it does something and so-to-speak the thought process behind its action.

Microsoft Orca

Microsoft has also introduced a new learning method for Orca:

Orca learns in a two-step process. It first solves simpler queries from ChatGPT and then it is made to use that experiential knowledge to learn from GPT 4 to solve more complex queries.

Also Read: Google Bard upgraded with amazing AI skills but is it better than ChatGPT?

So you see, it tries to emulate the reasoning capabilities of a human by imitating how humans think and perform. If it’s as effective as it is described to be, then we have an LLM or AI model capable of disrupting the future of AI.

Let’s see if Orca’s performance matches its promising theory. We look forward to this with some apprehension, of course.

Applying for job Never send CV generated by ChatGPT, heres why

ChatGPT being the new 'it' thing, everyone is utilising the chatbot for various tasks. Especially students, as they have been utilising ChatGPT in every way possible, be it their assignments or their CV. But the question is, are these getting accepted at the professional level?

Batch of 2023, who are now walking into the professional field after leaving the comfort of educational institutions, are caught in a bit of pickle. Should they exaggerate their achievements through the powers of ChatGPT by putting together an outstanding CV to help them stand out in the job market?

Also read: ChatGPT rivals Bard even more with its new features

I can’t say this for all students, but at least my friends from college who’re passing out this year have been working on enhancing their CV with ChatGPT. But as it is being sent over to companies for evaluation, it is turning out to be a deal breaker.

HR managers say it’s very easy after years of experience to know if something is genuine or not. Also, these AI bots at times will give two people similar answers, which too makes it easy for the professionals to rule such people out.

Chat GPT

Job seekers who use generative AI should be careful, however: 39 percent of HR professionals said the use of AI tech during hiring is a dealbreaker.

iCMIS Chief Technology Officer Al Smith commented "Generative AI bots (like ChatGPT) have the potential to help both candidates and employers be more productive and communicate better." He further said that, "From resumes and job descriptions to offer letters and onboarding material, the technology offers employers and recruiters a better starting point as they move through the hiring journey."

Definitely the technology is going far and beyond, but the point is how beneficial it is if you can’t crack the deal. Exploring and using new tools is definitely interesting but knowing their boundaries is also super critical for everyone to understand, least of all students who have dreams of landing their favourite job – hopefully they are tempering their enthusiasm with ChatGPT when writing their CVs.

What can AI not do It even found a new exoplanet 11 billion kilometres away

When we speak about AI, a majority will generative AI applications like ChatGPT or Midjourney, or personal assistants such as Alexa and Siri. However, the journey of artificial intelligence has progressed by leaps and bounds where we are talking about using machine learning and artificial intelligence to regenerate a human heart, produce autonomous vehicles and now, extend the technology further to even discover a new planet. That’s right, AI has significantly contributed to discovering a new planet, according to a report.

A team at the University of Georgia confirmed that artificial intelligence played a fundamental role in discovering a new planet outside our solar system. This can be considered as a pathbreaking system in discovering new exoplanets which can help in identifying new planets by just utilising the protoplanetary disks.

The basic understanding of this system is that AI helped in operating simulations to locate the exact periphery of the planet. However, the system is extremely intricate and complex and has taken the contribution of AI in Astronomy to the next level.

AI planet discovery

Jason Terry, a doctoral student at the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences exclaimed “This newly-discovered planet increases the already extensive collection of over 5,000 exoplanets identified beyond our solar system.”

The technology is commendable for the abilities artificial intelligence is offering to astronomical and space studies. Until now the newly discovered planet was hard to identify because it was orbiting 75 astronomical units away around its star, hindering the astronomers’ attempts at accurately gauging it.

As of now, astronomers have discovered 5,000 exoplanets and as the technology improves the use of AI in identifying celestial bodies is only going to increase. The mission of discovering unknown and harder-to-detect planets has expanded with technology upgrading and revolutionising itself, thanks to AI.

Artificial intelligence

How does AI help in planet discovery?

The Astrophysical Journal recently published two papers which gave insights about how machine learning has been contributing to the discovery of planets beyond our solar system in outer space. The technology helps in identifying the faint signs in dense dust disks that form planets which eventually develop young stars.

This AI tool in question works on the speed and efficiency of discovering forming planets especially when the telescopes deliver a flood of data on exoplanets in the Milky Way. The tool also works on identifying a signal in the previously analysed data making sure that there are no planets gone undiscovered.  “This demonstrates that our models and machine learning in general have the ability to quickly and accurately identify important information that people can miss” stated Terry.

There are AI models that are developing to underline evolution and formation of planetary systems. In a nutshell, astronomers can now discover planets that have been previously undetectable with the traditional methods.

ChatGPT launched an iPhone app, Android users were obviously angry

It seemed this day would never come, but it’s finally here. After an unusually long wait, OpenAI has released an iPhone app of ChatGPT which is completely free. The company also confirmed that an Android app is in the works and is going to be available very soon.

Having released it on the Apple App Store, the ChatGPT iPhone app has already gained popularity, making it the top app on the productivity category chart. Within hours of its appearance on the Apple Store, the app has overtaken Gmail, Google Drive and Microsoft Outlook.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has taken the world by storm. From new upgrades to branching out softwares such as AutoGPT, OpenAI is exploring all the possibilities of generative AI. Taking the baton forward, OpenAI is prompting a new platform for its users through an app on your phone.

Why only iPhone app, why no Android app?

The announcement has Twitterati debating over the “Apple first syndrome”. There is disbelief as to why Apple was prioritised over Android. A user, @ChaosGoddess769 said, “Another example of IOS first and Android later. Concentrating new tools/access for more of the same users. Wouldn't the ideal thing be to diversify to broader demographics and more people by focusing on the Android app first? Devil's advocate here.”

Another user, @SirBogarty had a humorous take on the debate, “User prompt: "Hi Chatgpt, please take this apple IOS code and write code for it to work on android, thank you".

Moreover, there are also tweets expressing disappointment that the app is only available in the US. User @cgledhill shared an image stating that the app is not available in the region. People are also requesting plugins for the app while some are just overwhelmed with the performance of the application. Especially the speech-to-text feature.

Also read: How to get iPhone notifications on Windows PC using this free and quick method

The announcement read that the parent organisation is taking the decision after multiple users suggesting that they prefer using the software on the go instead of having to login in to your PCs or browser on the cell phone. OpenAI mentioned that the application is free to use and is integrated with the speech recognition tool, Whisper for procuring voice inputs. Users who have opted for ChatGPT Plus will benefit out of GPT- 4 features which are more accurate in outputs. They will also be the first to know about the new features and try them out.

Note that in order to download the application, your cell phone should have iOS 16.1. So, if you are thinking if your cell phone is compatible or not, any succeeding iPhone post iPhone 8 will be able to download the app.

The organisation prompted, “We’re eager to see how you use the app. As we gather user feedback, we’re committed to continuous feature and safety improvements for ChatGPT.” in their blog post.
