Oppo F19 Review: Struggles to stand out as a solid option under 20K

At Rs 17,990 at the time of writing on Amazon and the Oppo website, the Oppo F19 definitely has a few things going for it. You get a sleek, aesthetically pleasing design with an AMOLED display, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and 33W fast charging support. However, the device falls short when compared to its competitors in the performance and camera departments, arguably, two of the most important aspects when considering buying a new phone.

Oppo is becoming increasingly present in the mid-range smartphone segment, offering up some interesting and eye-catching phones in this year alone. We reviewed the Oppo F19 Pro+ 5G this year and found it to be a pretty good option for those looking for an aesthetically pleasing 5G smartphone with a capable camera and long battery life. This time around, we have the Oppo F19, the third device launched in the company’s F19 series of smartphones. The Oppo F19 brings with it some pretty interesting attributes such as a large battery, an AMOLED display, an in-display fingerprint sensor, 33W fast charging support, and others, at a pretty aggressive price point. However, the competition in the sub 20K price range is absolutely ferocious, so it will be interesting to see if the Oppo F19 manages to stand out despite excellent offerings from companies such as Xiaomi, Samsung and Realme. Let’s delve deeper into the review to find out.

Oppo F19 review: Design and display

The Oppo F19 definitely borrows design elements from its more expensive siblings in the F19 series of phones. The phone is available in three colours – Space Silver, Midnight Blue, and Prism Black. We got the Midnight Blue variant for review and while the colour looked fantastic, the glossy glass rear panel is an absolute fingerprint magnet. Nevertheless, the light-refracting finish on the rear panel is sure to turn a few heads. The phone is also extremely lightweight and thin, making it feel more premium than its price tag when it comes to looks alone.

Oppo F19 review

The back also houses a small Oppo logo, tucked away in the bottom left corner of the device, and a vertically-placed back camera module that juts out a bit. As for the ports and buttons, the Oppo F19 has a USB Type C port at the bottom alongside the phone’s speaker and 3.5mm audio jack. On the right, you have the power button, while the volume buttons are positioned on the left side, next to the SIM tray. This is quite unusual since most phones today come with both the power and volume buttons on one side, usually the right, and frankly, we prefer that over the F19’s design. The buttons are pretty clicky and tactile, nevertheless. The SIM tray accommodates two SIM cards and a microSD card. The phone also has an in-display optical fingerprint sensor, which is not something we see very often at this price point. We’d also like to mention that the company has thrown in a pair of earphones in the box, a rarity these days.

Oppo F19 review

Now, coming to the display, the Oppo F19 sports a 6.43-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution, but no fast refresh rate support. This is disappointing since the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, despite being price similarly, comes with an AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate support. So, the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max is definitely a better proposition in this aspect when compared to the Oppo F19. The touch response of the device is pretty sluggish, for the most part, but is ramped up to 180Hz when in Game Mode.

Oppo F19 review

The display also houses a small punch-hole cut-out for the selfie camera that is tucked neatly in the top-right corner of the phone. The display is bright and vibrant that makes watching content a pleasure. We recorded a maximum brightness of 591 nits and minimum brightness of 2 nits. So, it’s safe to say that the display is pretty bright in most lighting conditions, except in harsh sunlight, where it is slightly harder to read. The colours aren’t the most accurate and are a bit too saturated, in our opinion. Overall, the display is a solid one to consume content on, but if you’re looking for snappiness, you may be better off with the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max or the Realme 8 Pro that come with fast refresh rate support.

Oppo F19 review: Performance

While the Oppo F19 has a commendable design and a good display, the same cannot be said for its hardware under the hood. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC, which is pretty dated at this point and is usually used in phones under 15K, so it doesn’t inspire much confidence in its abilities. The phone comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. We ran a plethora of benchmarks on the phone and some of the results can be seen in the graphs below in comparison to the phone’s strongest competitors.

Oppo F19 performance

Oppo F19 performance

The Oppo F19 scored a paltry 180360 in AnTuTu 8.0 and competing devices such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max and the Realme 8 Pro blew past it by a large margin. Even the inexpensive Realme Narzo 30 Pro nearly doubled the Oppo F19’s AnTuTu score. In Geekbench 5, the Oppo F19 scored 312 in Single-Core and 1319 in Multi-Core, another poor performance compared to the Note 10 Pro Max that scored 560 in single-core and 1761 in multi-core; and the Realme 8 Pro that scored 568 in single-core and 1677 in multi-core. The Oppo F19 also got a pretty low score of 5942 in PCMark Work 3.0.

Oppo F19 performance

Oppo F19 performance

Moving on to GPU tests, the Oppo F19’s shortcomings in performance continued being highlighted with the phone scoring a mere 383 in 3D Mark Wild Life. In contrast, the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max scored a whopping 1109 and the Realme 8 Pro scored an impressive 1047 in the same test! We saw this in GFX Bench too, with the Oppo F19 scoring much lower than the aforementioned competing devices here as well.

Now, we also played Call of Duty: Mobile and Asphalt 9 Legends on the device and used Gamebench to score the gaming performance of the device. In Call of Duty Mobile, the Oppo F19 managed to hit a median FPS of 43 with 77 per cent stability at high graphics, while in Asphalt 9, the phone managed a median FPS of 29 at 80 per cent stability. These are pretty poor numbers in comparison to the Note 10 Pro Max, Realme 8 Pro, and even the cheaper Realme Narzo 30 Pro. However, if you set the graphics to Medium in Call of Duty or Auto in Asphalt 9, the game runs visibility smoother with minimal heating. The phone does decently well in light day to day tasks such as texting and calling, but it is definitely sluggish when it comes to multitasking and app opening. Overall, the performance of the phone is not up to the mark in comparison to what its competitors are offering and we wouldn’t recommend this phone to avid mobile gamers.

Moving on to the software, the Oppo F19 runs on ColorOS 11.1 based on Android 11. The UI looks simple and clean, but it, unfortunately, comes packed with a ton of bloatware. You can delete some of this bloatware, but most of the Oppo apps including Hot Apps, HeyTap Cloud, Tips, and others, cannot be removed.

Oppo F19 review: Camera

Oppo F19 camera

The Oppo F19 comes with a triple camera setup including a primary 48MP camera combined with a 2MP macro shooter and a 2MP depth sensor. The phone misses out on an ultrawide lens, which is disappointing in this price range. The primary lens shoots decent photos in daylight with good colours and an acceptable dynamic range. The shadows are crushed in most photos though and darker areas in the photo lose out on detail. In low light situations, the camera produces grainy, noise-filled images that aren’t something we’d deem social media-worthy in the least.

Oppo F19 camera samples

Oppo F19 camera samples

Oppo F19 camera samples

Night mode definitely brightens up low light shots considerably but the noise is still present. Low light selfies are also grainy and low on detail. However, in daylight, selfies usually come out looking pretty good, if you turn off all the beauty filters applied by default. The macro lens is capable of some semi-decent shots, but the colours don’t look great in this mode.

Oppo F19 camera samples

Night mode off (left) vs Night mode on (right)

Portrait photography on the Oppo F19 is decent, with acceptable edge detection, for the most part. The 48MP lens also has some good natural background blur without portrait mode that allows for some good-looking close-up shots. Videos shot on the photo in daylight are pretty decent, but at night, there’s a fair bit of stuttering and noise in the videos. Overall, the cameras on the Oppo F19 are mediocre, at best, for the sub-20K price segment.

Oppo F19 review: Battery life

Despite being a sleek and lightweight phone, the Oppo F19 actually houses a pretty ginormous 5,000mAh battery. The phone will easily last most users an entire day. However, the Snapdragon 662 chipset is not the most energy-efficient, so you’ll see the phone’s battery draining faster than competitors with more power-efficient chipsets and the same battery capacity. If you’re a heavy gamer, you should see the phone last up to 7 hours. In our battery tests, the phone’s battery dropped by 7 per cent with one hour of GPS navigation and by 5 per cent with 15 minutes of playing Call of Duty: Mobile. In our video loop test, the phone went from 100 per cent to empty in about 16 hours.

Oppo F19 review

The Oppo F19 comes bundled with a 33W fast charger that can help users power the device in a pinch. The phone goes from zero to full in a little over an hour.

Oppo F19 review: Verdict

At Rs 17,990 at the time of writing, the Oppo F19 definitely has a few things going for it. You get a sleek, aesthetically pleasing design with an AMOLED display, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and 33W fast charging support. However, the device falls short when compared to its competitors in the performance and camera departments, arguably, two of the most important aspects when considering buying a new phone. The only users we could wholeheartedly recommend this device are those who use their phone for basic tasks such as calling, texting, and social media browsing. If you’re a light user and want a good-looking smartphone with decent battery life, the Oppo F19 could be a decent option for you. If not, you’re better off looking at alternatives such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max and the Realme 8 Pro.

The Holger 26 is the newest addition to your ever-growing arsenal in Call of Duty: Mobile. The weapon is the second weapon added to the game with the Season 4- Spurned and Burned update. The first was the MK2 marksman rifle that would unlock when players reached Tier 21 in the free Battle Pass. The Holger 26 can be unlocked via a Season Challenge called Holder Strike. As with all such challenges, players can earn a bunch of other rewards along the way.

Here is what you need to do in order to unlock the Holger 26 in Call of Duty: Mobile Kill 30 enemies in any game mode - 10x Weapon XP cards, 1000x Battle Pass XP Kill 20 enemies with any Assault Rifle equipped with 5 attachments - Smoke Grenade (Wanted), 1500x Battle Pass XP Kill 15 enemies with Headshots using LMG - M21 EBR (Carrion), 2000x Battle Pass XP Kill 30 enemies with any LMG equipped with any magazine and 4 attachments - Spray (Eternal Slumber), 2000x Battle Pass XP Kill 30 enemies with any Assault Rifle with any charm attached - Holger 26 LMG, 3000x Battle Pass Kill 30 enemies with any Holger 26 with any 3 stickers attached - Deputised Frame, 4000x Battle Pass XP Holger 26 statistics

The Holger 26 is described as a very versatile weapon, especially when compared to its contemporaries in the LMG class. The weapon comes with a 100 round magazine by default. However, unlike most other weapons, the magazine attachments for the Holger 26 actually reduce the ammo capacity of the weapon. This can make the weapon more akin to Assault Rifles in terms of mobility. This combined with the weapon’s high fire rate and good recoil control makes it another option for mid-to-long range combat.

Online casual gaming market could increase to Rs 169 billion by FY25: KPMG report

Research firm, KPMG has released its newest report on the state of online gaming in India. Called ‘Beyond the tipping point -A primer on online casual gaming in India’, the report covers a host of topics. This ranges from the types of gamers in general to in-game advertising metrics. They also talk about the state of gaming in India during the COVID lockdown. Here’s a look at some key metrics from the report.

The firm notes that compared to global markets, online gaming in India is still at a very nascent stage. While the country has the second-highest number of gamers in the world, its Average Revenue Per User is still quite low compared to even other developing and comparable markets like Indonesia, Malaysia and South Africa. KMPG notes that there could be a number of reasons for this ranging from significantly lower GDP per capita of India as compared to mature gaming markets to a negative perception of gaming in India.

However, the firm did note that the potential of the casual gaming market in India is pretty huge. It states that while there are 433 million casual gamers in India right now, it is projected to balloon up to 657 million users by FY25. This means that the online casual gaming market could increase from Rs 60 billion to Rs 169 billion in the same time frame.

The report also noted that the In-App Purchases (IAP) in India rose quite a bit during the COVID lockdown in 2020. In Q1 2020, IAPs in India were around $37.6 million. However, by Q2 2020, this number rose by 52% to $57.1 million. By Q3 2020, this number slightly declined to $43.1, which is still higher than Q1.

For additional insight, you can download KPMG’s entire report here.

Prince of Persia : Sands of Time remake delayed again

Ubisoft has taken the liberty to delay the remake of the class Prince of Persia: Sands of Time again. This time, it’ll be released in 2022. The dev team of the game had this to say:

A message from the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake dev team: pic.twitter.com/3B8tgUGkwl

— Prince of Persia (@princeofpersia) June 7, 2021

Announcement about the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake

Ubisoft initially announced in September 2020 that it was working on the remake of the classic Prince of Persia : Sands of Time. A game loved by many enthusiasts of the field. This obviously got people excited as the trailer stated that the game will come out in January 2021, just three months later.

Sands of Time : Delayed

Originally meant to release in January, Ubisoft took the decision to postpone its launch to March and tweeted this at the end of last year.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake has been postponed to 18th March 2021. More details from the Dev Team here: pic.twitter.com/vWLavVxNyZ

— Ubisoft_UK (@Ubisoft_UK) December 8, 2020

However, when February arrived, the dev team decided to postpone the game once more, this time giving no actual release date.

Another update from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake dev team: pic.twitter.com/O6OOmYXhOD

— Prince of Persia (@princeofpersia) February 5, 2021

Although, there was still some hope left in the die hard fans as they thought they could at least catch a glimpse of the remake at E3 this year, but that too isn’t happening as the devs wrote : "As you might have already read, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will not be in Ubisoft Forward. We are making great progress for our game to release next year, but we are not ready to share any additional information just yet"

About the Remake

The remake is being developed by Ubisoft Pune and features a visual overhaul and improved graphics as compared to the original 2003 Sands of Time. Some combat enhancements and camera POV have also been added in the remake. Additional motion-capture and voice recordings have also been created, with original Prince actor Yuri Lowenthal back in the role and Guidestones actress Supinder Wraich cast as Farah.

Conclusion

A lot of big titles are being announced at E3 this week and sadly Sands of Time remake isn’t one of them. Although the remake looked more like a remaster, we’re glad that Ubisoft is taking it’s time to polish the game to it’s best possible version since Prince of Persia : Sands of Time is such a classic, it deserves a good remake and if them taking more time to make the game even better, we’re up for it!

Assassins Creed Valhalla may have a 3rd DLC set in North Africa

After a French Content Creator gave accurate leaks in the past about  Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, he shared with us the details of a possible third DLC.

After scouring the game files for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in early May, Jonathan shared the maps of the game’s two planned expansions, ‘Wrath of the Druids’ and ‘Siege of Paris’. After a couple of weeks, when the first DLC was released, Jonathan’s leaked information about the map was proven to be almost entirely right, just like a few other times in the past. Jonathan has now shared the details of a third possible unannounced DLC which is in development right now.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Up until now, Ubisoft has only revealed two expansion packs on its roadmap for ‘Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’, which according to the PlayStation Store should both be released by 9th November 2021, or exactly one year after the game’s release i.e. 10th November 2021.

That doesn’t preclude the possibility of a third content expansion being in the works, perhaps for individual purchase or a second season pass.

Further diving into the files of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Jonathan uncovered three particularly revealing files named DLC_EXP1_Ireland, DLC_EXP2_Francia, and DLC_EXP3_Meteor. Very obviously, the first two refer to the ‘Wrath of the Druids’, which is set in Ireland and the ‘Siege of Paris’ is the unreleased second expansion that takes place in France.

As for the story of Meteor itself, Jonathan believes it is going to revolve around Norse Mythology and center around Muspelheim, or North Africa. There is a game file that contains the words “LocationWorldEntry_ACK_DLC_Muspelheim,” although Jonathan admits this might refer to removed or abandoned game content, there is a theory that in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, each of the Norse realms corresponds to a real world location and, as confirmed on Reddit by Darby McDevitt, the game’s narrative director, Muspelheim refers to “all of Northern Africa”

It is believed that meteor was not initially planned by Ubisoft, because information about it did not appear in the game’s files until after a content update at the end of March. This sudden change in plans by Ubisoft might be due to the record breaking success achieved by Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

AMD claims that it now has 30 of the gaming CPU market

According to the latest Steam Survey, AMD claims that they power 30% of CPUs in gaming PCs. This isn't exactly surprising news, beyond the fact that it has taken so long to get to this point.

AMD's Zen 3 chips were launched at the end of 2020, with the likes of the Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 5 5600X both making a huge impact as they were regarded to one some of the best for gaming. Both of those chips were hit with supply problems though and essentially sold out at the start of this year. Though the stock has started to come back, the number of PC’s powered by these chips appears to be on the rise.

AMD Steam

Unfortunately, considering the way Steam Hardware Survey actually gathers CPU data means it isn't the most useful information we will ever get. Tracking models of CPU’s are almost impossible, as the survey stores operating frequencies and the number of cores as different entities. So we can see trends in the number of CPUs cores in these machines, with the biggest uplift in 8-core chips, but getting much more than that from the survey is a difficult task.

When it comes to graphics cards though, things are a bit clearer as we can see which models people are actually purchasing. Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 being the biggest up-tick in laptops, with the rest of Nvidia's Ampere GPUs also making good inroads.

Interestingly, the mobile GeForce GTX 1060 is suffering the biggest down-tick, as it would indicate that there are plenty of gamers that are upgrading from the generation before last.

Chicken Nugget shaped like Among Us Character sells for 100,000 dollars

As if the weird memes about Among Us weren’t enough, The internet has managed to surprise us yet again.

The nugget was found in a McDonald’s tie-in meal with the K-Pop band BTS and it sold for almost a hundred thousand US dollars. That’s 72,92,410 Rupees. Yes, you read that right, About 73 lakhs for a chicken nugget slightly resembling a character from a bygone popular game. (no offence to anyone who still plays)

among us nugget

The eBay auction wrapped up after 184 bids, arriving at the final price of 99,997 dollars for what is basically a cold piece of processed chicken in a small plastic baggie.

The original seller of the nugget named Polizna did however tell the internet that it’s not JUST the nugget that will be sent to the buyer. At such an astronomical price, the buyer also requested that they ship a few tubs of McDonald’s extremely contentious Szechuan sauce alongside it and at that price? We’d send over 20 tubs of it.

"Xbox’s Twitter replied to the official Among us twitter that had posted about it and mentioned that it had better come with Szechuan sauce if it sells for this price," wrote Polizna. "Jokes on them.. I have Szechuan and at the buyer's request will ship some with the nugget."

The eBay listing also noted that the nugget would be shipped frozen and air sealed with a life expectancy of 14 days-just in case the buyer did, in fact, pay several years’ salary to eat the most expensive nugget in history.

2K apparently working on an XCOM Avengers game, and other leaks

Recent leaks that were just confirmed hint to some really great news which include a new Borderlands spinoff, a new Marvel game from Civilization studio Firaxis, and another project called Codename Volt. We also got an an early look into what to expect from the NBA 2K publisher as it prepares to partake in the Electronic Entertainment Expo digital event. The leak originated from Reddit user “swine_flu_greg,” who posted it to /r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, and got weight when Greg noted that NBA 2K22 will feature Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki on at least one variation.

XCOM Avengers

Jeff Grubb (GamesBeat) and Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) have claimed a bunch of 2K's upcoming slate of games leak are accurate; which include information of Firaxis games working on "XCOM with MARVEL heroes" too, hopefully we can expect certain popular characters from MCU to appear in a strategy based game. The borderlands spin-off title, being developed by Gearbox, is expected to be titled "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands" and is a game of guns with class-based shooting and will still focus on Borderlands-style class-based shooting action. The final one is a supernatural sci-fi developed by Hangar 13 called "Codename Volt". Codename Volt is a new sci-fi action game that also brings in magic and other supernatural capabilities for the player and the enemies.

Much of the long awaited announcements are to be made official during the E3 presentation held on June 12 by Gearbox.

Although, these are still unconfirmed leaks which are yet to be addressed by 2K officially. Take-Two, the parent company of 2K, is scheduled to hold a presentation on June 14, so we can expect either none or some of the rumours and leaks to be officially confirmed.

How to download Battlegrounds Mobile India on Android

After months of anticipation, Battlegrounds Mobile India is finally here. However, playing the game right now isn’t as easy as heading over to the Google Play Store. You see, not everyone can get their hands on the game as it is still in early access. This means that only those players that get a chance to be beta testers will get the option to download and play the game. But there is another way…

But before we get to that. Here’s how to register as a beta tester for Battlegrounds Mobile India.

Players can head over to this link and hope that there is a slot available for becoming a beta tester. Unfortunately, these slots are filling up fast, if not already full.  In case you do manage to become a tester, you can head over to the official Battlegrounds Mobile India listing on the Google Play Store to download the game like usual.

But… you could just sideload the app and get away with it. All you need is a little bit of technical know-how and you too can start playing the game.

Before you download the game, there are a couple of things you should know. First off, know that sideloading apps is risky and you might end up harming your phone. Second, make sure you have at least 2GB-3GB of free storage space on your device. Finally, tweak your phone’s setting to allow the installation of apps from third parties. Now, let's begin.

The first thing you need to do is download the .APK and .OBB files. The link for both is available here(.APK) and here (.OBB).  Once both files are downloaded, install the .APK file first.  Once done, unzip the .OBB file. Do note that this .OBB file needs to be added in the Android->OBB folder in your Android device.  Next, open the app and install all the resources that it needs.

Now all you need to do is log in, and you should be ready to play!

OnePlus deepens integration with Oppo: Heres what Digit readers have to say about this

OnePlus has officially extended its integration with Oppo in order to streamline its operations and make “better products”, according to CEO Pete Lau. Earlier this year, OnePlus and Oppo merged their respective R&D teams months after Pete was appointed the Senior Vice President and Chief Product Experience Officer of the investor group OPLUS which is an investor group that looks after OnePlus, Oppo and Realme.

“With this deeper integration with OPPO, we will have more resources at hand to create even better products for you. It will also allow us to be more efficient, for example, bringing faster and more stable software updates for OnePlus users,” Pete wrote in a post on OnePlus forums.

OnePlus has often found itself marred in controversy over its dependence on Oppo since both of them are managed by the same conglomerate, BBK Electronics. So, it is an interesting development now that OnePlus is officially merging with Oppo.

Even though OnePlus will be merging its internal departments with Oppo, the brand remains an independent entity and will continue to launch phones and other products as it has been doing. “We will continue launching OnePlus products, holding events (hopefully in person soon) and engaging directly with you for feedback through the same OnePlus channels as before. OnePlus’ commitment to you remains the same,” Pete reiterates in the post.

During the OnePlus 9 series launch in March, OnePlus revealed that the phones will run on ColorOS in China instead of HydrogenOS. The ColorOS is usually used by Oppo phones and it is not the slickest of the interfaces around. However, globally OnePlus will continue using OxygenOS which the company has also confirmed after its most recent announcement.

What Digit readers said

We asked our readers across social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube what they thought of this deeper integration between OnePlus and Oppo. Between Instagram and Facebook where we received close to 1500 responses, over 1,050 people said they were not happy with this new journey OnePlus is going on. On Twitter and YouTube, over 52 per cent and 33 per cent of people thought that the merger was not a good idea.

We know that the OnePlus of 2021 is not the same company when it started back in 2014 with the OnePlus One. It slowly went from being a brand catering to enthusiasts, to taking on the big smartphone brands like Apple head-on. The company jumped price-segment each year just like it climbed the ladder with one phone after the other. It left enthusiasts in the lurch but alas it made a u-turn last year with the OnePlus Nord, a brand new series of smartphones that are affordable and try to offer the same OnePlus experience as the premium-tier phones. The Nord sold like hotcakes last year.

After its latest announcement, OnePlus says that nothing will change in how they think about making a OnePlus phone and that the merger will help it efficiently scale up development. The company could also be looking to expand its offline market and its dependency on Oppo may just help it reach that goal. For end-users, it seems like there won’t be any immediate changes in how you experience a OnePlus product and the OxygenOS is here to stay.

While Valorant is currently only on PC, Riot Game’s plans to release a version for mobile. The announcement came via Valorant’s Executive Producer, Anna Donlon. It was noted that the idea is to ensure that the game is not just a port of Valorant PC, but a unique mobile experience. As such, the team is not working on cross-play between PC and mobile. This makes a lot of sense as Valorant is a first-person hero shooter and the PC players will have a definite advantage over mobile players.

Spotify Greenroom launches today as music streaming giant's live audio-only interactive chat app similar to Club House. The app will allow Spotify users to interact with their favourite music creators in live audio-only chat rooms. Spotify Greenroom will allow users to sign in using their Spotify IDs. Spotify Greenroom is being launched in 135+ markets simultaneously today.

Spotify Greenroom

Live audio-only chat apps have become a massive sensation around with world when Clubhouse first launched in March 2020 for iOS. Several platforms were quick to launch their own Clubhouse-clones in the months after or are currently working on prototypes. Twitter Spaces is the closest competitor in terms of features but VoIP apps have had features similar to clubhouse for years. Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp, Fireside, etc. are some of the many applications which have similar features albeit, not with the same focus.

Spotify Greenroom Audio Chat app Android

Spotify had acquired Locker Room, a sports-focused clubhouse alternative in March 2021 and the blog annoucement for the same had stated, "Spotify will evolve and expand Locker Room into an enhanced live audio experience for a wider range of creators and fans. We’ll give professional athletes, writers, musicians, songwriters, podcasters, and other global voices opportunities to host real-time discussions, debates, ask me anything (AMA) sessions, and more."

With today's app launch, we will see Locker Room rebranded as Spotify Greenroom with a new look and feel similar to Spotify's design language. The app will allow users to login using their Spotify ID so there's no need for them to create a separate account for Spotify Greenroom. Battlegrounds Mobile India new rules for players which you must know about

Easily one of the most anticipated android games of the year, Battlegrounds mobile India has finally basked us with rays of hope for its release, especially for the young audience which is hopefully provisioning it as PUBG’s official comeback in the Indian gaming market. With Krafton, the game’s legal developer, teasing the public every now and then hinting on it’s release, the young anticipants are probably in luck… Or are they?

Turns out they’re in for some more unveilings, so as to speak, Krafton did introduce pretty concernful changes specially for our young players, to keep their hands clean. Here’s what happened :

Battlegrounds mobile India

Krafton recently dropped some announcements introducing a few “new policies” focusing primarily on the young audience below 18 yrs, with the super-hyped game launch drawing near. With all the ballyhoo around the desi PUBG version of ours, the policies become ever so pertaining considering almost 20 million pre-registrations already crossed on Play Store.Keep reading to find out what exactly these new changes are, how they imply, and more!

If anything, Krafton certainly isn’t taking any chances with their (probably) second chance of a comeback into the indian gaming community. With lakhs of PUBG fans awaiting for the launch, Battlegrounds Mobile India went a step ahead and clearly disclaimed some regulations in it’s new privacy policy. Some important ones focused on the ‘below 18’ audience from the same are:

Mandatory parents' consent: Battlegrounds Mobile India gamers under 18 years of age will have to take consent from their parents to play the game.

Capped gaming time: According to the advisory release by Krafton, players below 18 have a maximum playtime limit of three hours now. This is something which is hinted to fight off addiction towards the game among children.

Mobile number requirement: Even though Krafton hasn’t specified the details on how would it verify the parental consent via mobile numbers (we can assume an OTP based verification system here), the privacy policy for Battlegrounds Mobile India states that if you are under 18, you will have to provide the mobile number of your parent or guardian to confirm that you are eligible to play the game.

Power to parents: Krafton “claims” that with the above mentioned procedure implemented, parents can exercise a certain extent of authority over their child, specially to keep their gaming habits healthy and under check. In case their wards appear to be getting addicted to Battlegrounds Mobile India and spending lots of hours playing the game then they can also ‘directly’ contact the developer to disable the account of their children.

Data security: Krafton claims that the gaming data of all Battlegrounds Mobile India gamers will be stored on servers in India and Singapore exclusively.

Limit on in-game purchases: Interestingly, the game developer also states that players can’t spend more than Rs. 7,000 a day for any in-game purchases in Battlegrounds Mobile India, which again is only for children below 18. In-game purchases in PUBG, specially the Royal Pass (An elite ingame subscription that player had to pay for inorder to gain access to exclusive skins and benefits), were quite popular during it’s time so, this is something which might be reassuring to parents (and their wallets).

For the time being, that’s all about the latest news dropped by Battlegrounds Mobile India, stay tuned for more updates about the same, thanks for reading!

Animated emotes on Twitch coming soon

On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, Twitch is planning on a few new changes for the creators on their platform, apparently including the option to make their emotes animated. Twitch is also testing out a new feature that gives followers the ability to have their own emotes. According to a post on the Twitch blog, animated emotes will first be available to Twitch Partners in just a few weeks to try out, where creators will be able to upload a total of five animated emotes for their tier one subscribers to use, followed by affiliates who will likely gain access to animated emotes after Partners, available to them by the end of 2021. Added to that, they will also be adding a function to disable animated emotes for viewers who may be “sensitive to animations''.

animated Twitch emotes

Although It wasn't explicitly mentioned in their post, it also seems like other pre-made animations for emotes will be made available after the feature's launch, and Twitch streamers won't necessarily have to work on their animated emotes themselves. Upon launching of the animated emotes feature, creators will be able to choose and apply one of six pre-made animations from Twitch to their emotes. Then there’s the Emote Library, which is essentially a centralized storage space for emotes, letting creators easily decide which emotes to use or discard, as well as setting up which subscription tier those emotes are available to.

Apart from animated emotes, Twitch also hinted on the idea of giving small  personalised pictures to followers as well, which combined with the animated emotes feature is claimed as an opportunity for creators to "grow their communities by offering viewers a fun, free benefit to hitting the 'Follow' button." The personalized picture feature will only be released to a small group of Twitch Partners and Affiliates though, and even then will be a beta version for the same.

Twitch is all set to promote more engagement towards the creator communities on it’s platform and at least their ambition looks promising, though it would be fun to witness how well they implement it too.

Nvidia partnering with Valve to bring DLSS to Linux

Linux gamers using the Valve’s Proton compatibility tool to run Windows games on their systems will be soon getting a performance upgrade as Nvidia has announced that it’s working with Valve to bring FPS boosts using its DLSS technology featured on RTX cards.

Deep Learning Super Sampling or DLSS, is a technology that lets gamers get more performance in games without having to give up too much image quality. It works by running the game at lower-than-native resolution, for eg: rendering the game at 1080p when your monitor is 4K, but then upscaling the images to native resolution using some remarkable algorithms.

DLSS on Linux

DLSS will be exciting for Linux gamers, but it’s also interesting considering rumors of Valve creating a handheld gaming device. As DLSS will help a handheld device to perform well without much graphics power.

While Nvidia hasn’t officially released a list of which games powered by Proton will be getting DLSS, there are a startling number of candidates. Running Nvidia’s list of games that support DLSS through a site called ProtonDB, which lets users know how well games work when using Proton, shows that a good portion of DLSS-enabled games are already working on Linux. That’s around 30 games out of 50.

Nvidia hasn’t announced a timeframe as to when DLSS will be coming to Proton but they did mention that support for Vulkan was coming this month, and that DirectX support would be coming in the fall. It's just good to see companies trying to bring Linux gaming up to par with the Windows experience.
