AI researchers at Microsoft leaked 38TB of private data accidentally: Heres what happened

Microsoft's AI team has made a huge blunder by leaking 38 TB of the company’s private data. A report has revealed that this data contained confidential information such as passwords for Microsoft services, secret keys, and over 30,000 internal messages from more than 350 Microsoft employees using Microsoft Teams.

According to a report by Wiz, the tech giant’s AI team has made a collection of training data public, which consisted of open-source code and AI models used for image recognition. After that, a link from Azure was provided to people who visited Github storage that can be used to download these models.

Things went south when the link provided by the Microsoft AI team gave the random people access to not just check what was in the Azure storage account, but also gave them access to disrupt the system, including the ability to make changes like uploading, overwriting, or deleting files.

Further, the report revealed that the Shared Access Signature tokens, an Azure feature, was the root of this problem. It provided the special links that could be used to access Azure storage data, but the problem here was that this particular link was meant to give full access to the user. Typically, there may be some restrictions and limitations in the links.

It was also mentioned in the report that Microsoft’s private data was exposed back in 2020 but the professionals informed the company on June 22, 2023. Afterwards, these Shared Access Signature tokens were reportedly taken care of within two days. The problem was fully resolved by Microsoft in August, according to the report.

Microsoft also gave assurance to the people that no private data of customers and the company was leaked.

Google updates Android with new logo and 3D bugdroid: Take a look

The Android brand has undergone several updates over the past ten years to modernise its appearance and keep up with the needs of Google's community. For instance, Google updated the Android logo in 2019 to make it easier to read and more approachable. Also, to make upcoming releases of Android clearer and easier to understand globally, the company had changed the naming standard from fancy (e.g., Android Lollipop) to simple (e.g., Android 14). Now, Google has announced that it is changing Android’s logo by capitalising the “A” to improve its appearance when placed next to Google’s logo. The company also announced that the Android robot is getting a new 3D look.

On September 5, 2023, Google said in a blogpost, “You’ll notice some subtle changes that help connect Android to Google. In addition to moving away from our longstanding lowercase stylization of ‘android,’ we’re elevating the Android logo by capitalizing the ‘A,’ adding more weight to its appearance when placed next to Google’s logo.”

While the tech giant has added more curves and personality unique to Android, the new Android stylization more closely mirrors Google’s logo and creates a balance between the two.

The company hopes that these updates to the Android typeface will better communicate the relationship between Android devices and the Google apps and services.

Google further mentioned that as part of its last update, the Android robot became a prominent fixture of the company’s logo, “reflecting the playfulness people have come to expect from Android.” Now, the tech giant is giving this recognisable non-human member of the Android community a new 3D look.

“The bugdroid — the face and most identifiable element of the Android robot — now appears with more dimension, and a lot more character,” Google said.

With the new 3D look, the tech giant aims to make the bugdroid appear as dynamic as Android itself. Google has also updated the robot’s full-body appearance to make sure that it can easily transition between digital and real-life environments, making it a versatile and reliable companion across channels, platforms and contexts.

Users will start seeing the new aspects of the brand identity, like the updated logo and 3D bugdroid, appear on Android devices and in more places starting this year.

Chandrayaan-3 successfully lands on moon: 3 difficulties it overcame to create history

Chandrayaan-3, started its journey to the Moon from Sriharikota’s second launch pad, has successfully landed on Moon’s surface. This is a remarkable moment for India, as it is the only country to land on the Moon’s south pole. Now Vikram Lander, the landing module will release the Pragyan Rover which will find water and analyse the chemical composition on the Moon's surface in a lunar day. However, Chandrayaan-3 had to face a lot of challenges in making this possible.

3 challenges Chandrayaan-3 had to face

The Moon’s south pole is an area which witnesses perpetual darkness for billions of years and even the temperatures here are way too extreme. Prior to Chandrayaan 3, four other international attempts to land on the moon's lunar surface had failed. This included Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft, Chandrayaan 2, a Japanese and an Israeli non-profit attendant. They failed just a few minutes prior to their landing.

Chandrayaan-3

The moon’s surface is not flat and stable and witnesses many moonquakes. This has caused the moon’s surface to have lobate scarps. According to a research by The Physical Research Laboratory, which is a National Research Institute for Space and allied sciences, supported by Department of Space, Government of India and headquartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a ~58 km long segment of lobate scarp situated at an average horizontal distance of ~6 km in the west of the proposed primary landing site”. This could have caused a major issue during Chandrayaan 3’s landing.

Chandrayaan-3 has successfully

The landing site identified for Chandrayaan-3 had two major scraps close to it and as mentioned earlier, moonquakes are common in the area. According to research studies the 58-km long segment of Scrap 1 has been “seismically active recently”. This could have caused ground shaking likely related to the movements along lobate scarps. This would have further led to boulder-falls and landslides obstructing the landing.

Amidst all these situations, Chandrayaan-3 managed to become first successful mission to soft-land on Moon's south pole.

Chadrayaan-3: Where and how to watch historic ISRO moon landing

Chandrayaan-3 mission is going smoothly as planned, and the spacecraft has successfully started separating modules in space. The landing module, Vikram Lander, named in honour of Vikram Sarabhai, is finally detached from the propulsion module. India is just a few hours away from becoming the first country to land on the lunar south pole of the Moon. The Vikram lander is scheduled to land on Moon in the evening at 6:04 PM IST. If you are interested in watching the live streaming of the landing, here’s how you can do it.

Where and how to watch Chandrayaan-3 moon landing

On various platforms, the live telecast of India’s Lunar Mission, Chandrayaan-3, will be shown. You can watch the Vikram Lander landing on the moon on ISRO’s social media handles like Facebook, Youtube or on ISRO’s website and on Doordarshan TV as well. The live telecast will start on all of these platforms at 5:20 PM IST, and interested viewers can start watching the landing from 5:27 PM IST.

Chandrayaan

As for the recent updates, the landing module is currently finding a spot to soft-land on the Moon. India is just some steps away from being the fourth country to soft-land on the Moon. The other three countries are the US, Russia and China.

The next step after landing will be the release of Pragyan Rover to search for water and study the chemical composition of the surface of the Moon during a lunar day.

Chandrayaan-2, which was launched in 2019, said hello to Chandrayaan-3's Lunar Module on Monday, announced by the Indian Space Research Organisation. They mentioned that both of these spacecraft can talk to each other.

Threads already lost 79-percent of users till date, in worrying news for Metas Zuckerberg

Twitter lookalike Threads was rolled out recently on July 5  and took the internet by quite the storm. But it turns out that the hype was really short-lived as the App is seeing a massive decline in active users. Currently, the Zuckerberg Twitter alternative is really struggling to regain its popularity with users.

At the time of its launch on July 5, 2023, Threads got almost every Instagram user onboard with its popularity soaring high. It made records by gaining more than 100 million sign-ups on the App within the first five days of its launch.

Zuckerberg had even used the correct timeline to launch his new App as Twitter was facing a lot of backlash for the new policies rolled out by Elon Musk and people saw it as an alternative to the blue-bird App. But it now seems that Threads only had a small shot at fame and couldn’t beat Twitter.

As mentioned earlier, Threads had gained more than 100 million users within the first five days but a month later the Meta App is struggling with only 10.3 million daily active users. Reports suggest that about 79% of the initial users have stopped using the app altogether. Other reports reveal that Threads has lost more than half of its users already. A Reuters report cited an internal call from Meta, revealing that Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Threads’ retention was 'better than what the executives had expected, it was not perfect'.

Zuckerberg

A new report by Indian Express cites Similarweb, revealing that Threads had about 49.3  million active users on July 7. But now the numbers have dropped disappointingly to just 10.3 million active users. Further, the report reveals that initially, the average time spent on this new social media platform was about 21 minutes which has now dropped down to just 3 minutes per day.

Apple to set up a new manufacturing plant in Karnataka

Foxconn, which is a major iPhone Assembler, recently proposed to set up a new supplementary manufacturing plant in Karnataka. Foxconn Technology (Hon Hai Technology Group) is headquartered in Taiwan and is a leading technology and service provider. This addition would supplement the current  Devanahalli Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) in Karnataka. The news was confirmed by Karnataka’s Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil.

A meeting was held recently with Foxconn Industrial Internet’s (Fii) CEO Brand Cheng for the same and it was chaired by Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The meeting was also attended by Information Technology Minister Priyank Kharge and Chief Secretary Vandita Sharma.

Fii is planning to invest ₹8,800 crore which is around $1 billion in Karnataka for the said plant.

The project requires about 100 acres of land which is available near the Japanese Industrial Park near Tumakuru. The State is going to help with all the logistics for the same. And according to Minister Patil, the handing over of land for the same is in its “last stage” now. So, we can expect the plant to be set up soon.

Once the plant is set up, it will generate about 14,000 jobs for the people in the first phase, as informed by the Minster MB Patil.

At this plant, Fii is hoping to not just make mechanical components needed for phones but also manufacture screens, and outer coverings. The new manufacturing plant will act as a supplementary one to the current unit at  Devanahalli where the end assembly takes place.

On the matter, Patil said, “Foxconn is coming up in about 300 acres. The process of handing over land is in its final stages, there were some issues, so I have personally held meetings four times in this regard, as we did not want to lose the project. Foxconn, which manufactures Apple phones, is very prestigious for us”.

Apple bringing their manufacture in India will be a good thing because the tech-giant will also bring employment with its manufacturing plant. Additionally, the prices of Apple products could also reduce after the plant is set in India.
