Instagram Ready To Do The Bare Minimum to Protect Teen Health

Facebook and Instagram have been making headlines ever since the company came under fire for knowing exactly how its products harm teens. After leaked documents were released to The Wall Street Journal, the US Senate summoned Facebook for a hearing titled ‘Protecting Kids Online’, to understand exactly what can be done to counter the negative impacts of social media. Now, in a move that feels like the bare-minimum, Instagram has announced that it will introduce a feature that nudges teens away from harmful content, while prompting them to take a break. The company will call this feature, ‘Nudge’.

How will the Instagram Nudge work?

How will the Instagram Nudge work?

Facebook’s Vice President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, told CNN "We're going to introduce something which I think will make a considerable difference, which is where our systems see that the teenager is looking at the same content over and over again and it's content which may not be conducive to their well-being, we will nudge them to look at other content."

He also added, "we're introducing something called, 'take a break,' where we will be prompting teens to just simply just take a break from using Instagram."

Is this the bare minimum?

Based on Clegg’s comments, one can surmise that this feature is currently in development, with developers identifying and designing parameters to help teens avoid harmful content. However, one could argue that the subjective nature of the term increases the scope for children to fall through the system’s cracks. Barring content with obvious red flags, it is unclear how developers will identify content that’s harming the psyche of a teen, especially when you consider that something as basic as looking at an advertisement online can also inspire eating disorders in those who are prone to them.

Is this the bare minimum?

The addictive nature of social media is pretty evident. As such, a simple prompt asking users to ‘take a break’ may be effective for momentary pauses from scrolling, but may not be sufficient enough to actually combat issues like social media dependency. This prompt is akin to Twitter’s new prompt (discussed here). People may take note of the reminder the first few times, but might eventually be desensitised and ignore the same.

While brainstorming measures to protect teens is of paramount importance, it’s equally important for these social media platforms to proactively think of measures that have lasting effects.

CBSE result: In a first, Board to deploy new Blockchain technology

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Center of Excellence for Blockchain Technologies of the National Informatics Center will use "blockchain technology" systems. This will monitor the outcomes of the CBSE results. Blockchain Technology aims to guarantee that documents become safe by preventing them from being manipulated.

According to the CBSE statement, in the academic year 2019-2021, the board made the certificates of classes 10 and 12 accessible digitally signed. In the following months, the credentials of the preceding year will be available. As soon as CBSE issues fresh certificates, digitally signed certificates will be transmitted to the BlockChain system. This will establish a secure connection to the blockchain system and will help in monitoring the documents.

What does the CBSE have to say about this matter?

According to CBSE Director of Information and Technology Antriksh Johri, "The CBSE blockchain has been fully deployed by CBSE for CBSE results. Previously, we spoke about the usage of AI and machine learning in affiliation systems, and how they complement one another. To maintain immutability and traceability, the data is encrypted and then stored in a single place."

For students who want to continue their education or find work, this will be a valuable resource, Johri added. CBSE collaborated with the National Informatics Centre, part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the National Informatics Center's Centre of Excellence for Blockchain Technology to create the 'Academic Documents' initiative.

What does the CBSE have to say about this matter?

How will CBSE Blockchain technology record the data?

The data recorded in a distributed ledger generated using blockchain technology is owned by all transaction participants. The distributed network's CBSE Blockchain nodes must agree on which data should be collected and replicated. This removes the need for third-party verification of information.

All content from 2019 onward has been added, and the rest will be released in the next weeks and months. CBSE created "Parinam Manjusha," the first academic repository established by a school.

Academic blockchain documents, which may include admission to higher education and job offers from businesses, may be used for a variety of purposes. Banks and financial institutions can use this method to provide educational loans and merit-based scholarships to deserving students. It is possible to verify the authenticity of certificates even after years.
