Musk clarifies the logic behind the X rebranding of Twitter

Elon Musk says the name Twitter doesn’t suit the platform anymore. It was fine when it was about posting text within 140 character limit. However, that’s not the case anymore. The platform is more than just text posts. Also, the X-rebranding has been a step in the direction of an everything app.

What is this everything app he is talking about?

Musk shares a fondness for the letter X which is evident from the fact that he named his second startup X which later became Paypal. His recent son was also nicknamed X. And the reference to X has popped up in different aspects of his life and business career throughout the years.

Before buying Twitter, he had tweeted his intentions about X.com and building a super-app like the WeChat app in China. So, this new move has been a long-time coming.

Also Read: Musk kills the bird: Twitter rebranding to X has been years in the making

So, when a user tweeted the list of companies that have gotten renamed, he clarified this isn’t just about renaming Twitter. Rather, the X app will be more than a communication platform. It will gain digital payment and wallet services to help you “conduct your entire financial world”.

So, like WeChat, X will also be a multi-purpose app including messaging, social media, and digital payment. Perhaps, it will also bring in features like location sharing, file sharing, games, booking taxis, paying for food, and buying movie tickets, etc.

It will be like a one-stop app for most user needs in everyday life.

WeChat is very much integrated with the daily life of Chinese people. For X to become so, it will have to have features to attract and engage people. It will also require access to an unfathomable amount of data. However, with such wide scope and proximity to our lives, the app could become a privacy nightmare too.

Also Read: TwitterX is trending on Twitter with some funny memes and interesting hot takes

Let’s see how the future of X Corp unfolds. So far, Musk and the team have been swiftly changing almost everything about the Twitter brand including name, logo, and associated accounts. But even then some things can’t be changed like for example, rebranding the TwitterMovies account.

Musk kills the bird: Twitter rebranding to X has been years in the making

Elon Musk is rebranding Twitter to X, including the domain X.com now redirecting to Twitter.com and an interim new X logo. This may seem abrupt to some onlookers but it’s been more than 20 years in the making. Here’s the history of Musk and X and what this rebranding could mean for the future of Twitter.

The future of Twitter now is in the history of X

pic.twitter.com/IwcbqMnQtA

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 23, 2023

X.com was an online bank and Musk’s second startup venture he founded in 1999. This later merged with a competing software company called Confinity and became Paypal in 2000. He was no longer a chief executive of X.com by this point. However, years passed and in 2017, he bought the X.com domain from Paypal.

He has time and again expressed his fondness for the letter X. He has even nick-named one of his kids X.

Also Read: Threads isn’t threading enough and here is why we think it is so

Buying Twitter has also apparently been a long-term plan to create X.com, a super-app like Tencent’s WeChat in China.

He has tweeted or mentioned X on several occasions.

https://t.co/bOUOejO16Y

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) August 10, 2022

Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 4, 2022

Twitter probably accelerates X by 3 to 5 years, but I could be wrong

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 4, 2022

I am excited to welcome Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of Twitter!@LindaYacc will focus primarily on business operations, while I focus on product design & new technology. Looking forward to working with Linda to transform this platform into X, the everything app. https://t.co/TiSJtTWuky

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 12, 2023

And soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 23, 2023

So as already mentioned, X would consist of many other apps and business. It will not just be a social media app, although that would be at the core. Eventually, Elon may bring all of his companies under the X Corp and introduce a payment system too. However, it is too early to tell.

This is a developing story and we shall keep you posted on more updates as when we have them. Stay tuned.

Amazon Prime Lite vs Amazon Prime plan: 999 vs 1499 difference explained

Amazon's introduction of Prime Lite in India has sparked curiosity among potential subscribers about how it differs from the standard Prime membership. Below, we delve into the key distinctions between the two subscription plans:

Pricing: The most noticeable difference lies in the pricing. While Amazon Prime is available at ₹1499 for a year, the Lite version is significantly cheaper, offered at ₹999 for an annual subscription.

Also read: Cheaper Amazon Prime Lite plan launched for ₹999: How good is it?

Streaming Limitations: Both Amazon memberships grant access to a plethora of videos, movies, and TV shows. However, Prime Lite members can only stream on two devices simultaneously in HD quality, while Prime subscribers can enjoy 4K resolution streaming on up to four devices.

Ad Experience: Lite subscribers need to bear with ads on Prime Video, a feature not specified for standard Prime users. The exact placement and frequency of these ads have not yet been clarified by Amazon.

Music and Reading Services: Prime membership provides access to Amazon Prime Music and Prime Reading, offering a wide range of songs and books. These services are not included in the Lite plan.

Gaming and Prime Advantage Benefits: Amazon Prime subscribers can enjoy Prime Gaming and Prime Advantage benefits, which include no-cost EMI on smartphone purchases and up to 6 months of free screen replacement on select devices. Prime Lite does not offer these benefits.

Morning Delivery Option: Unique to Prime Lite, subscribers have the option to pay an additional ₹175 for morning delivery on eligible products. This service is not mentioned under standard Prime benefits.

Plan Options: Amazon Prime provides flexible subscription choices, including a ₹299 monthly plan and a ₹599 quarterly plan. However, Prime Lite comes with only one annual subscription plan.

TLDR summary: While the standard Amazon Prime subscription offers a more comprehensive suite of services, the Prime Lite plan emerges as an affordable alternative for those prioritizing video streaming and e-commerce benefits. It offers customers more choice and flexibility of options, which is great.

Cheaper Amazon Prime Lite plan launched for 999: How good is it

Exclusive Cashback on Amazon Pay ICICI Bank Credit Card: Subscribers can earn an impressive 5% cashback on purchases made on Amazon India, a benefit that can quickly add up for frequent shoppers.

Stream Unlimited Videos: The subscription comes packed with unlimited streaming of videos, movies, and TV shows from both India and around the world. Having said that, however, streaming is limited to HD quality video only on two devices simultaneously.

Shocking Over half of all Indian travellers are victims of online scams, says McAfee

The latest online cyber crime report from McAfee is specifically addressed to all the Indian travellers who’ll be jet-setting around in summer vacations and beyond. Titled 'Safer Holidays,' the McAfee report highlights some disturbing trends among Indian travellers.

A staggering 51% of Indian adults have fallen victim to online scams, especially while hunting for cost-effective travel deals. Surveying 7,000 individuals from seven countries, the report sought to understand the extent of cybersecurity threats faced when booking and planning trips online, and to evaluate the level of caution exhibited by users when utilising digital platforms overseas.

An overwhelming 61% of Indian travellers voiced their concerns about the potential compromise of their devices while travelling, making up the highest level of concern worldwide from any one country of travellers.

Even more troubling is the following statistic, that 77% of those who suffered from online scams reported losses up to $1,000 (approximately ₹83,000) before even their travels began – which is a worrisome trend.

McAfee

McAfee’s report claims two-thirds of Indian vacationers are planning domestic travel this year, and as many as 42% set to travel internationally. McAfee’s research suggests that rising inflation and cost-of-living pressures has increased the risk of leisure travellers falling prey to attractive, sophisticated, deceptive online deals related to travel and hotel booking – because a whopping 93% of Indians are expected to book their holidays online.

Digital traps are becoming increasingly sophisticated and varied. McAfee's research found that 27% of Indian adults have been duped into transferring money via bogus platforms, and a shocking 36% have had their identities stolen when booking online. Alarmingly, of these victims, 13% shared passport details, and 23% disclosed other personal information to counterfeit websites.

Unfortunately, awareness does not always translate into action. Even with 46% of respondents acknowledging that their personal information is less secure while using the internet on vacation, a mere 61% utilise services to monitor their online identity. A surprising 33% do not use a VPN while on vacation, and among those that do, 28% use it mainly to access geo-specific content.

A significant number of travellers engage in risky activities such as using unsecured Wi-Fi networks (38%), using free USB charging ports at public terminals (34%), or leaving their streaming accounts logged in after checking out of their accommodation (29%). Despite the risks, travellers continue to engage in these practices.

Having said that, McAfee does recommend some safety tips while engaging in online travel related activities. If you receive an email asking you to click on a link, even if the travel deal sounds great, it’s best to avoid interacting with the message altogether.

Be cautious when connecting to public Wi-Fi while on vacation and make sure the Wi-Fi is secure and attached to a trusted source – use a VPN wherever possible. Don't pay for rentals by wire transfer, prepaid cards or gift cards. These types of transactions often can't be reversed if the rental offer is fraudulent.

The report underscores the dire need for increased cybersecurity awareness and stringent safety measures among Indian travellers, especially when relying on online travel booking websites and deal apps. If not, today’s scammers are nothing but ready to exploit the slightest lapse in would-be travellers’ online safety practices.

Google search engine is unbeatable: We learn that in 2 ways this week

Google search engine is the default search engine for most of us and is therefore the biggest player in the market. Its dominance can’t be easily contested by competitors like Bing and Neeva. The latter learned that the hard way. Here’s what happened:

Neeva Search Engine closes shop

Neeva has announced its closing down its search engine on June 2.

Before we learn about why Neeva had this unfortunate end, you should know the search engine came across a promising alternative to Google search engine because it was ad-free and more privacy-friendly. Also, showed visual elements and human-created information over the top 10 blue links that you see on the Google Search Engine Results Page.

Now, it offered this service behind a paywall. Well, there was a 3-month trial period after which users had to pay $4.95 (~₹410) a month.

Even with the promise of a better search engine UX, it had to convince people to try it. That was possible only if people knew or cared about changing the default search engine on their device browsers.

Google is mostly the default search engine on various browsers or devices because it has eye-watering deals with the device manufacturers like Apple and Samsung (more on this soon).

Also, we underestimate how spoiled we users are. We don’t want to bother with even the few steps and clicks it takes to read “Are you sure you want to change?” and select a different search engine option.

And so it’s like the company’s co-founders Sridhar Ramaswamy and Vivek Raghunathan said in a recent blog post, “Throughout this journey, we’ve discovered that it is one thing to build a search engine and an entirely different thing to convince regular users of the need to switch to a better choice”.

Google retains the default search engine position on Galaxy phones

According to a new WSJ report, Samsung has walked back on its plans to swap the default search engine on its phones. A few weeks back there were rumours of Samsung thinking of using Bing as the default search engine. But fearing the effect it will have on its relationship with Google and the market perception about the whole ordeal made Samsung continue its deal with the top dog in the field.

For the unversed, Google has about 8.5 billion daily searches and covers 86–96% of the worldwide search engine market share (Source: Kinsta). It’s a key source of its revenue and with the potential addition of AI features, the Silicon Valley giant is likely to stand its ground.

Google will delete your account for this simple reason: Heres why

After dishing out a lot of much-awaited tech gadgets at Google I/O 2023, now Google has decided to take a few more stern steps as well. If you have a Google account which hasn't been used for the past two years, it will be deleted by the end of this year.

Google has said that even if there is certain content stored in a particular Google account, but it has been inactive for 2 years or more, then Google will delete everything including the content present on that account. This is quite a strict move from Google, if you think about it, and not to be taken lightly.

Also read: Gmail’s Confidential Email makes your emails more secure: Here’s how

Why is Google deleting accounts unused in 2 years

Google says that the unused accounts are targets as they are much more vulnerable when not in constant use due to factors like two-factor authentication, security checks etc. Google has started working on this already but the accounts will be purged only by the end of this year, probably around December.

Google to sweep out accounts

If you haven't used your account for the past two years then every information stored in Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets, Calendar, Photos will all get deleted. But, Google has said that they will be sending out notifications to such account holders before they’re deleted.

The mails will be sent to the primary email address as well as the recovery email address.  Google also talked about how the mail IDs will be phased for deletion and mentioned, “starting with accounts that were created and never used again.”

So, if you have such a Google account that you want to safeguard from getting deleted, then there is a simple way out for you. Just login to your unused Google account and do any of the following:

Read or respond to emails in Gmail Store something on Google Drive Play videos on YouTube Search on Google  Use Google sign-in and log in to any third party app or service

Google has further  mentioned that this account purge is only applicable to personal accounts and people with such business accounts don't have to worry about this. So, if you haven't used your Google account for two years, but want to save it from getting deleted then it's time to start working on it before it gets lost forever.

const date = new Date("21,3,2023") // incorrect code

console.log("date=>", date) // Invalid Date

Both of them are able to do it fine.

Google Bard vs ChatGPT

I then asked ChatGPT and Bard to code a terminal-based game of tic-tac-toe, and both of them were able to do that too.

2. Review a product

I asked ChatGPT and Google Bard to review the Pixel 7A. While Bard gave a description of the product’s features and specifications and a generic conclusion, ChatGPT (3.5) didn’t do anything stating it doesn’t know about Pixel 7A.

3. Explain complex or technical information

Well, this is tricky. Although both of them attempt at explaining things, if something’s too technical or esoteric, then these things tend to fail. For instance, I asked them to tell me about PHOLED displays and their responses included some inaccuracies. On multiple tries, the responses also showed inconsistencies.

That said, Google’s responses were more technical in nature, if that’s something you want. Google tends to show citations/ sources of the information it is sharing but not always.

You also get the option to get related searches beneath some of Bard’s responses. This could be useful.

4. Compose and create

I asked both ChatGPT and Bard to create a resume for an editorial profile on a tech website. ChatGPT’s response was better in terms of how it was framed. It was more neat and comprehensible.

You can use them both to create text for a blog, email, etc. They can also help you in proofreading your write-up, check grammar, and bring some clarity if needed.

5. Carry a conversation

Google

When I told both of them that I was feeling low to see how they will respond and what they will do to make me feel better, I felt Google’s responses were more humane (if you will). This is very important when you are conversing with a bot. But, of course, there have to be some guardrails that ensure the bot’s responses are safe.

So, at least in our tests, we think Google’s AI chatbot does better. Your mileage may vary. Also, we haven’t tried GPT-4 for this test. It may perform differently than ChatGPT (based on GPT 3.5)

Apple search engine to take on Googles but it may take some time: Report

Apple is currently paying around $20 billion per year to Google for its search engine. The Cupertino-giant might hence want to come up with an in-house alternative to save that cost. Well, The Information reports that the company is working on its own search engine with help of IPs from Laserlike, a startup the company had bought a while back. So, it’s a product that’s been a long time coming. But, as you’d guess, the road to a Google-rivaling search engine may not be that smooth.

Here’s what the report tells us about Apple's search engine efforts:

Apple Search Engine with “capabilities that might compete for head-on with Google”

Apple Search Engine

Search engines play a vital role in the way people use the internet and if you control that (to whatever extent possible), that’s a lot of data insights into user behavior, ad revenue, and power, of course.

So, why would Apple miss out on that, with the money and might it has?

Well, it wouldn’t. The only problem is that this is going to be a mammoth task.

Google Search Engine

A major step by Apple towards this uphill journey dates back to 2018 when it acquired Laserlike, an AI startup involved in web search and discovery personalization. Interestingly enough, the venture was co-founded by Googlers. So that is very likely Apple’s interest in this investment.

However, all those three Laserlike founders have since returned to Google and as The Information puts it, this could very well be “a potential blow” to Apple’s intentions. Thus, the Apple search engine may not be here before 2026.

In any case, Apple must be aiming to employ the intellect and efforts for not just a search engine but also for enhancing Siri, Spotlight, and App Store search results — all things Apple users would appreciate.

Jack Dorsey apologizes for mass layoffs at Twitter: Heres what he said

Facing trolls on social media, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on Saturday apologised to sacked Twitter employees, saying that he grew the micro-blogging platform too quickly.

Reports earlier said that several Twitter employees hate Dorsey for their current sad status after the hostile takeover by Elon Musk who has fired almost 50 per cent of the Twitter workforce.

"Folks at Twitter past and present are strong and resilient. They will always find a way no matter how difficult the moment. I realize many are angry with me. I own the responsibility for why everyone is in this situation: I grew the company size too quickly. I apologize for that," Dorsey posted.

"I am grateful for, and love, everyone who has ever worked on Twitter. I don't expect that to be mutual in this moment...or ever and I understand", he added.

Dorsey quit Twitter in November last year, handing over the baton on Parag Agrawal, who is among those sacked.

Following his departure from Twitter, Dorsey changed his financial services company Square to Block and introduced Bluesky, a decentralised social networking platform.

Dorsey posted on Twitter that Bluesky intends to be "a competitor to any company trying to own the underlying fundamentals for social media or the data of the people using it".

In 2019, Twitter founded Bluesky as a way to develop a similar decentralised concept for the company.

Dorsey owns 18 million shares of Twitter which are valued at over $1 billion.

Will SpaceX fund Ukraine Starlink Internet or not Heres what Musk says

Tech billionaire Elon Musk says his rocket firm SpaceX will continue funding its Starlink Internet service in Ukraine, a day after he said it could no longer do so.

On the microblogging site Twitter, Musk wrote that "the hell with it... Even though Starlink is still losing money and other companies are getting billions of taxpayer $, we'll just keep funding Ukraine govt for free".

According to the BBC, Starlink has been vital for Ukraine's military and people to stay online.

Ukraine says it helped to reboot key infrastructure after Russian attacks.

Energy installations were among the facilities targeted by more than 100 Russian missiles this week. Starlink consists of thousands of satellites in low-Earth orbit and ground terminals.

Last month, Musk asked the Pentagon to fund the Starlink programme instead of him, according to the US media.

And on Friday, he tweeted: "SpaceX is not asking to recoup past expenses, but also cannot fund the existing system indefinitely". That move drew strong criticism.

Earlier, Musk provoked Kyiv's ire by suggesting Ukraine could cede territory to Russia.

YouTube handles introduced as a truly unique ID for creators: Here is how to get your YouTube handle

YouTube is borrowing a feature that’s found in social media platforms like Twitter. We are talking about ‘handles’ and now every YouTube user can get a “truly unique” ID that’s different from YouTube channel names. We will get to know the hows, whys, and whatnot of YouTube handles here.

What is YouTube handle?

YouTube handle

YouTube Handle is being called “a new for people to easily find and engage with creators and each other on YouTube”.

Now, you may think but isn’t there channel names for that purpose?

How is YouTube Handle different from YouTube Channel?

Well, there can be multiple YouTube channels with the same name. But, YouTube handles will be unique and distinct. This will help the creator brand themselves better and their viewers/audience can connect with them easily using the handle. You could interact with your favorite YouTube via YouTube comments, mentions, in Shorts, etc. YouTube handle will also appear on Shorts player, Search results, and your channel page. So all in all, better YouTube engagement and visibility.

Another important difference between YouTube handle and YouTube channel is how changing the former doesn't impact your verification badget but changing the channel name will remove the badge.

How and when will I get YouTube handle?

YouTube handle

First of all, if you have a YouTube account you are eligible for a YouTube handle.

Further, YouTube says those channels with a personalized URL will automatically get the same thing as their YouTube channel.

However, you will get to change it once you get a notification via YouTube Studio and your registered email. Also, on the other hand, if you get a YouTube handle, that would also be used as part of a matching YouTube channel URL.

As for the YouTube handle rollout timeline, YouTube says it will be rolling them out gradually starting next month.

Now, the priority is decided upon whether your YouTube channel is active or not, your subscriber count, and your overall presence on the platform.

You can check if your YouTube account is ready for handles by visiting youtube.com/handle. You will be able to customize the handle also from the same link. You will have the option to pick a handle by November 14 at the earliest.
