Your next Apple Watch could be 3D printed, as per reports

There have been rumours floating around about Apple considering 3D printing as a part of its product design and manufacturing process. Now, we have a report that details how Apple will implement this change.

The report comes courtesy of Mark Gurman at Bloomberg who says that Apple will start 3D printing certain models of the upcoming Apple Watch Series 9 as a test run before implementing it for other products.

Also read: Apple Watch X to come with blood pressure monitor: When is it launching?

Gurman cited his sources to be “people with knowledge of the matter”, so take this news with a grain of salt since it hasn’t been confirmed by Apple itself.

Gurman says that Apple would be using 3D printers to manufacture the chassis of the non-Ultra Apple Watch models. This would save Apple considerable time and resources since they wouldn’t need to cut large metal slabs to create individual parts of the watches. It could also have a positive impact on the environment as less overall material would be needed to build the watches.

Apple to 3D print certain models of upcoming Watch Series 9

There has been a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming launches of Apple products in the company’s September ‘Wanderlust’ event. The company is expected to launch the new iPhone 15 series as well as the Apple Watch Series 9 lineup.

Gurman from Bloomberg shared that this process has been under development for at least three years now, and the company will only test this process out on certain models of the upcoming watches. However, the company will only fully switch over to this new manufacturing technique once they have confirmed its success with the upcoming Watch 9 Series.

The process Apple will use is called binder jetting. In this process, the print is made “with a powdered substance, which afterward goes through a process called sintering”. Heat and pressure is then used to squeeze down the material into something that feels and looks like traditional steel.

Apple is set to announce the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 on September 12, so we won’t have to wait much longer to see if the speculation holds any merit.

Indian govts laptop and PC import ban effective from November 1, despite manufacturer appeals

In a recent development, the government has reaffirmed its stance on not delaying the impending restrictions on the import of laptops, personal computers, and tablets. These measures, which entail the compulsory acquisition of licenses for bulk imports of these devices, are slated to become effective from November 1, 2023.

Notably, prominent industry players engaged in a discussion with Rajeev Chandrashekhar, the Minister of State for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), where they sought an extension of the transition phase by approximately 6 to 12 months.

Also read: Laptop import ban explained: Do you need to worry about your next purchase?

Alkesh Kumar Sharma, the secretary of MeitY, expressed satisfaction with the overwhelming response garnered by the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) initiative targeting large-scale electronics. Consequently, he underscored that there is no justification for extending the transitional period for these corporations to commence domestic manufacturing. Sharma elaborated, "We have already received 58 registrations encompassing a spectrum of participants, ranging from large and small entities to both domestic and international stakeholders. With the application window for the scheme open until August 30, 2023, we anticipate further participation."

The government had made an unexpected announcement on August 4, unveiling import constraints on personal computers, laptops, and tablets. Following significant uproar, however, the authorities opted to postpone the implementation of these restrictions until November 1.

During their interaction with Minister Chandrasekhar, prominent laptop manufacturers including but not limited to Dell, Acer, Samsung, Panasonic, Apple, Lenovo, and HP, articulated several concerns regarding the decision and the intricacies involved in obtaining the requisite licenses.

As it stands, the restrictions on the import of select electronic items are slated to take effect from November 1, 2023. Despite industry appeals, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to enforcing these measures as planned.

Indian PC market shrunk by over 15 percent, Acer the only brand that grew

In India, the regular PC market seems to face problems. They sent out 3.2 million computers in the second part of this year. This was a little more than before, but compared to the same time last year, it went down by a lot (15.3% less). This information comes from a group called International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker.

In this quarter, all types of computer products didn't sell as well as they did the year before. Computers such as notebooks sold 18.5% less, and the desktops sold 7.0% less compared to last year. Both regular people and businesses didn't buy as many computers, with a 17.0% drop for regular people and 13.8% for businesses.

The PCs sold for schools and the government did better, but businesses had a hard time. Some states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu helped schools get more computers, and that made the school computer market grow by 43.7%. The government also increased the PC market by 8.2%, because they needed them for court orders.

The high-end laptops, priced over ₹80,000, faced a downfall by 30.7%. But they did better in the later part of the year, going up by 39.0% compared to the previous three months.

However, the top 5 brands in India are HP Inc, Lenovo, Dell Technologies, Asus, and Acer Group. All of these companies have faced a downfall in their market share in 2Q23 compared to last year’s (2Q22) position, except Acer Group, according to IDC. Acer Group has seen a positive growth in its market share this year.

Laptop import ban explained: Do you need to worry about your next purchase

In a move that sent shockwaves across the consumer electronics market in India, the Government of India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced a new set of rules restricting the import of laptops, tablets, AIOs, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers.

The notice issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade lists out all the changes made to the import directives of the above-mentioned consumer electronics goods in the country. This move has come right before the start of the festival season in the country, which sees record sales of laptops and tablets.

What does the laptop import ban exactly mean?

The news has brought along several doubts and questions in the minds of consumers looking to get their hands on one of the now-restricted devices. So, here’s a detailed look at what the new regulations mean and how they could affect your next purchase –

The import of laptops, tablets, AIOs, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers is not banned in India altogether. Now, the entities willing to import these devices will now need a special license. These devices have been moved from being listed under the “Free” category of imported goods to “Restricted”. If you are someone who was looking to import a laptop from abroad as a part of a purchase on an e-commerce portal or via personal channels, then you are still free to do that. As stated in the notice, the import restrictions do not apply to the import of “1 Laptop, Tablet, All-in-one Personal Computer, or Ultra small form factor Computer, including those purchased from e-commerce portals, through post or courier.” However, you will still have to pay the applicable import duty fees. Lastly, if you are someone who is involved in the research and development/testing/benchmarking and evaluation/repair of the products that are all under the new regulations, then you are in luck! Given that you are able to provide proof of the fact that the product that you are importing is being used for one of the above-stated applications, then the import of 20 such items is still allowed! Laptop ban India (Source: Directorate General of Foreign Trade) What does it mean for you?

There are a LOT more angles to this regulation change, which I believe are best left for the law professionals to understand. For now, I believe you should buckle yourself up for a price hike of laptops and tablets over the next few months.

laptop import ban explained

Once the brands active in this space are able to get on some steady ground, you can expect the prices of most of the devices to stabilise or, rather drop down as well! This is because, as things stand, most manufacturers who do not have an active facility in India will now look to set up manufacturing bases in the country, bringing down the overall costs of the products and logistics.

Budget Gaming Laptop Lenovo LOQ Announced With AI-Performance Chip For 73,000

Lenovo launches its budget-oriented LOQ gaming laptops, exclusively available on Flipkart. LOQ laptops offer advanced features including a MUX Switch, Lenovo's LA AI Chip, and NVIDIA RTX GPU. Lenovo aims to target budget-conscious gamers with its LOQ lineup, with prices starting at INR 73,990.

If you were one of those people who wondered where the latest Lenovo IdeaPad gaming laptops were then I believe I have the answer. Lenovo has introduced its brand new "LOQ" series of gaming laptops targeting budget gamers. Announced exclusively on Flipkart, LOQ is Lenovo's latest attempt to cater to the gaming community. The design cues and shared features with the well-regarded Legion series indicate a conscious effort to ease newcomers into Lenovo's gaming ecosystem.

Also read: Lenovo LOQ 151RH8 Review: Fantastic gaming performance at the cost of high surface temps

Lenovo LOQ

LOQ laptops, available in 15 and 16-inch variants, are equipped with either a 13th Gen Intel Core processor or an AMD Ryzen 7000 Series CPU, and offer up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU. The display's NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility promises improved image quality, less screen tearing, and smoother motion during gameplay, but real-world testing will determine how well these claims hold up.

MUX Switch will come standard with the LOQ series, giving the users the maximum performance from their GPUs. The brand new Lenovo LA AI Chip onboard the laptop powers the Lenovo AI+ Engine. Which manages power and thermal performance during gaming sessions. Seems like a clever touch, but again, it's hard to judge its effectiveness without real-world tests.

Also read: Lenovo Yoga Book 9i looks so futuristic: Check all specifications and features

The Lenovo LOQ lineup, starting at INR 73,990, seems to be making a bid for the budget-conscious gamer. But with fierce competition in this segment, it remains to be seen whether these devices can make a mark. One model, the Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8, stands out with an Intel® Core™ i7-13620H processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4060 graphics, 16GB DDR5-5200 memory, and 512GB SSD storage.

In addition, every laptop in the Lenovo LOQ series is equipped with Super Rapid Charge, a feature that could offer, according to Lenovo, quicker charging times and extended battery life. The latter is something whose impact could only be fully tested on a long-term basis. The laptops also sport Lenovo's signature full-sized gaming keyboard, offering a 1.5mm key travel, and the option to light things up with a 4-zone RGB backlighting system.

Lenovo LOQ

I personally think if Lenovo could manage to bring an RTX 4050-powered LOQ gaming laptop at around ₹75,000, then it could shake up the budget laptop gaming segment.

iPhone 15 could reach your hands later than previously expected: Heres why

The new iPhones were expected to come out in September as it has been with every other iPhone series launch event in the recent past. However, now a new report claims the iPhone 15 lineup may suffer some supply issues. Let’s find out what’s happening and should new iPhone buyers be worried.

iPhone 15 launch: Will it delay?

Apple is reportedly trying to slim down the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max’s bezels but in the process, the displays procured from LG are not fusing well with the metal frame. Apple is trying to sort this out but if in case, LG displays fail to pass the reliability test, then it will have to resort to Samsung.

Due to this production snag, a Bank of America analyst, Mr Wamsi Mohan told Macrumors that the iPhone 15 series’ launch could get pushed to the fourth quarter starting in October.

Also Read: Apple iPhone 15 leaks: Take first look at design and colour options

Now, another report by The Information shares these production and supply worries but still expects Apple to bring the new iPhone 15 series in September itself. The catch, however, is that there may be some supply shortages for the Pro models and hence you may not be able to get your hands on one that easily.

 iPhone 15

Something similar has happened with the Apple Watch Series 7 which got delayed by a month because the production had to factor in its bigger display compared to its precursor.

But again, since this is Apple we are talking about, we aren’t that concerned. It is known to have a strong supply chain. Even during the pandemic chip shortage, Apple managed to power through because of its relations with leading manufacturing and logistics players in the space.

OnePlus 12 might come with a Periscope Lens, leaked renders suggest

OnePlus launched its flagship OnePlus 11 this year with a neat design, and already renders of its successor are surfacing on the internet. The OnePlus 12 could launch with a very similar design but with many changes. Smartprix in collaboration with Onleaks has leaked some renders which suggest many new features about the design. The publication also claimed that these renders have been made from the testing units of OnePlus 12.

Let’s start with the back panel of OnePlus 12, here we might see the signature sandstone finish which was also featured in the OnePlus 11. Apart from that, the camera module could also see some major changes in OnePlus 12. OnePlus is expected to feature the periscope lens in OnePlus 12 as the renders show a vertical strip in the camera module.

Also read: OnePlus 12 leaks hint at major camera improvements, check specs details

The camera island of OnePlus 12 is very much similar to the OnePlus 11, according to the renders. The camera arrangement might be different but the camera module, still circular and integrated in stainless steel plate, according to the leaks. The flashlight can also be seen on the top left corner of the plate instead of circular camera island.

Talking about the front of the smartphone, the OnePlus 12 is rumoured to feature the punch-hole selfie camera in the middle instead of top left corner.

Also read: Realme GT 3 vs OnePlus 11R: 5 top features compared

The specs of the smartphone have also been leaked on the internet which suggest a 6.7-inch QHD OLED curved display with 120Hz refresh rate. Apart from that, the OnePlus 12 is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and could also come with the support of 150-watt fast charging support and 50-watt wireless charging support. As I mentioned above, the company might also add a 64-megapixel Omnivision OV64B periscope lens.

Now the similar design could be a good thing for OnePlus. It could be a brand image and signature like Apple’s iPhone but Android users might not find it very creative because most of them expect new designs from new Android smartphones. What do they say about don't fix it if it isn't broken? It might be a similar sentiment about the OnePlus 12's design renders. Let's wait and watch.

Exclusive: HPs new AI-Powered Macbook Killer leaks - to cost under Rs 1 lakh

In an exclusive scoop, I have the information that HP is preparing to shake up the tech sector with a "Macbook killer." Leveraging their 33.8% market share (as per Q1 '23 IDC report), HP is reportedly readying a 15-inch Envy laptop aimed squarely at the content creators' community—an audacious bid to unseat the Apple MacBook Pro from its lofty perch.

My sources indicate that this device will not merely challenge but outdo Apple's offering, packing in features specifically tailored for the dynamic, hybrid lifestyle of modern creators. And the bombshell? It's expected to be priced under 1 lakh, substantially undercutting the MacBook Pro—a bold gambit that could send ripples through the market.

Leaked HP Envy Macbook Killer Laptop

The new HP Envy is planning to score where the MacBook Pro couldn't. It will incorporate a touch screen, a glaring omission in Apple's premium laptop. Designed to support the ever-evolving demands of content creation, HP's move is a clear nod to the changing preferences of the creator community.

It is also clear from the leaked image that the laptop will have upward-firing speakers, a big trackpad, a full-size SD card slot, and a 360-degree hinge. There is also a good chance that the stylus will come included with the laptop itself. The laptop's keyboard will also feature a 60% layout, which a lot of creators and productivity enthusiasts prefer.

Leaked HP Envy 15 Apple MacBook Killer

But that's not all. The new Envy laptop is rumored to be loaded with AI features aiming to enhance security, audio, video, and overall user experience. The standout is HP's Presence 2.0 technology, designed to enhance video calls by adjusting lighting conditions and reducing background noise—a handy feature for all the remote workers and freelancers out there.

Furthermore, the laptop is engineered to support heavy content creation and multitasking. But will it unthrone the much coveted Macbook Pro? I'll let you know soon once I get my hands on the device.

Apple MacBook Air 15 launched at WWDC 2023, but should you care

At WWDC 2023, Apple launched a new MacBook Air with a 15-inch screen. Here we see if it makes sense for you to consider it, especially compared to the prices of the MacBook Air 13 and MacBook Pro.

Apple MacBook Air 15 price and should you buy?

Apple has priced the MacBook Air 15 at ₹134,900.

That puts it very close to MacBook Pro 13, which is currently available for ₹1,34,990 on Croma. You may be able to grab it for an even lower price on some other site or as part of some deal.

Meanwhile, the 13-inch MacBook Air M1 and MacBook Air M2 come at a starting price of ₹79,990 (Amazon) and ₹1,07,990 (Croma) respectively.

Those two models are still great laptops at the price they are retailing in the country.

So if you are price sensitive, then you could consider either of the 13-inch models. If you want a more powerful laptop, the MacBook Pro 13 (with M2 SoC), as you have seen, is present at a price point not so far from the newcomer.

Not to forget the Apple M3 processor is in queue next and once it launches, the 15-inch MacBook Air will have one more competitor from its family.

So, the new MacBook Air could be a tough sell for price-conscious buyers.

That said, there are still reasons to consider the 15-inch MacBook Air and here are they:

Reasons to consider Apple MacBook Air 15

The prime reason to consider the new 15-inch MacBook Air is its bigger screen.

The 15.3-inch Liquid Retina Display is said to offer 25-percent larger real estate than the 13-inch MBA. It still sports 500 nits of brightness and DCI-P3 colour gamut support.

The visuals will be backed by a 6-speaker setup with Dolby Atmos support and a 2x stronger bass claim.

Now you may wonder if a bigger display device should be having more space for a bigger battery. Well, that's not true, unfortunately. The comforting news is however that this one boasts 18 hours of battery life which is the same as its 13-inch counterpart. Pros and regular folks unanimously laud the battery life endowed by M-series laptops. As a bonus, you are also getting the 35W dual port adapter with this machine's box.

It is not that heavy at 1.5 kgs and comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2x Thunderbolt (USB-C) ports and a MagSafe charging socket.

Spacetop: The worlds first AR laptop, but will it be the future of computing

Forget Apple AR glasses, Sightful, a new Israeli company has launched Spacetop, the world’s first augmented reality laptop. It is in an early access program and the company considers this as a first step towards “reinventing” the laptop experience. But, it is packing a 3+ years old chipset meant for Android smartphones. So, the question is whether it’s powerful enough to be the future of computing. Let’s check out its full specs and features to get an idea about the same.

Spacetop specifications

Spacetop comes with a 13-16” display (1080p resolution per eye) and a 100-inch canvas. Canvas is what the brand calls its virtual work environment for AR projection. You get to see the AR elements through a pair of AR glasses.

Above the panel, there is a 5MP webcam with an FHD+ resolution.

Beneath the display, there is a full-size keyboard and touchpad combo.

The software onboard is called Spacetop OS. This is laid on top of Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, and a battery rated to run for 5+ hours.

You get 2x USB-C (PD and DisplayPort-supported) ports which can be used for charging. The laptop is 5G compatible and you also get Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 for wireless connectivity.

The machine weighs 1.5 kg and its dimensions are 1.57”x10.47”x9.8”.

That’s about it with the available spec details of the device.

Now, from the looks of it, we are a bit sceptical about whether this assortment of specs is powerful enough to run cutting-edge tech like an AR laptop. But, we can only know for sure when we use it.

For now, let’s see how it works.

How Spacetop works

Spacetop AR laptop

You boot the laptop and wear AR glasses. The AR goggles also support prescription lenses. So, you can get custom AR glasses made for you from the brand.

Next up, the Spacetop OS appears as a projection in the air.

You interact and control the AR elements on the virtual screen (pinned on the air) with a keyboard and touchpad. The virtual screen doesn’t move with you but thanks to the camera tracking your head movements, you get to see different parts of this Canvas with slight movements of your head. Likewise, the AR environment can zoom in and out based on your head movements.

The goggles also project sound for immersion and this will be audible to the wearer only.

That’s the basic lowdown of how the thing works.

For the purposes of this article, we will be calling both of them laptops only (which they technically are).

1. Design

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 Chromebook

Lenovo equips the Chromebook with a 45W USB-C charger. Primebook has got a 24W charger in comparison.

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 Chromebook runs on an Intel Celeron Dual Core processor (N4020) clocked at up to 2.8 GHz frequency. Meanwhile, the Primebook laptop has a MediaTek Kompanio 500 (MT8788) processor inside. It has a max frequency of up to 2.0 GHz.

The Lenovo laptop has an Intel-integrated UHD graphics card whereas the Primebook ships with MediaTek integrated ARM Mali G72 GPU.

Both Primebook and Lenovo offer 4GB LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of EMMC storage. While Primebook supports up to 200GB of expandable storage, Lenovo also comes with micro SD card reader support.

4. Display

Lenovo has outfitted its laptop with an 11.6-inch HD TN panel (1366x768) with 250 nits of brightness. Primebook also has an HD screen that stretches 11.6 inches.

Above the display, both laptops feature a 720P webcam.

5. Software

Lenovo tells you it’s packing ChromeOS in the name. On the other hand, Primebook is carrying Android-based PrimeOS.

PrimeOS is an indigenous operating system that comes with 10,000+ Android apps, MDM (Mobile Device Management with parental lock and usage restrictions), etc. This coupled with 4G connectivity gets you a laptop that is aimed at a seamless transition for an Android phone user. Well, Chromebook also makes a similar pitch and has been in the market for a longer period. It is equipped with a Google Play Store to download Android apps as you want.
