Unlimited night data from 12 am to 6 am on Vis new prepaid plans

Vi has been losing customers recently due to its poor 4G speed and questionable 5G strategy. But the one good thing about Vi is its unlimited data at midnight, judging by the fact that people are majorly hooked up on the web at night.

So, now they have decided to make amends to its users and offer 5G connectivity and unlimited night data by introducing two new plans. They have also launched another plan which is valid for 250 days.

Let's have a look at what these plans have to offer.

Also read: VI Prepaid Mobile Recharge Plans in India

Vi ₹17 Prepaid data plan

This plan has a validity of 24 hours with unlimited night data between the hours of 12AM and 6AM. This offer doesn't have any outgoing SMS facility or anything for calling. This is basically for simply accessing the internet. So, if you want to call or text someone then you need a separate plan for that.

Vi ₹57 Prepaid Data Plan

This plan on the other hand has more to offer. It is valid for 7 days and also has unlimited night data. But, this too doesn't have the calling and SMS facilities.

Vi's 250 day Prepaid Plan details

So, this plan is valid for 250 days and comes for ₹1999. The plan offers unlimited calls and 100 SMS per day. Except for this provides 1.5 GB of data per day. The data speed is reduced to 64Kbps when the daily limit is crossed. Also, if you finish your daily 100 SMS quota, then it will be chargeable for ₹1 per SMS.

These were the plans that Vi has recently introduced and the 250 day plan seems like a steal deal. So, if you are a Vi user you can give this a thought.

Google trolled Apple over SMS feature yet again: Heres why

During the Google IO 2023 keynote, the company’s VP of product management, Sameer Samat threw shade at Apple for not adopting the RCS messaging standard. We will see what specifically he said and why he said so. We shall also brief you on the significance of RCS and why Apple isn’t ready to jump on the RCS bandwagon.

First of all, what is RCS?

RCS: Rich Communication Services

RCS or Universal RCS Profile from GSMA aims to upgrade SMS with the ability to send rich multimedia messages over the internet. Some other features of RCS messaging include no character limit, typing status indicator, read receipts, and the option to share the location.

These are features that you would find on iMessage (Apple) and WhatsApp (Meta). The latter is available on Android. But, RCS would come as part of the built-in Messages app on all modern Android smartphones.

Why Google is spearheading RCS?

Google seems to want Messages as the de-facto messaging app on Android. So far it has managed to band together carrier operators and Android smartphone manufacturers to adopt RCS.

Apple is the missing piece of the puzzle, so to speak. On the IO stage, Sameer Samat said, “When you are texting in a group chat, you shouldn't have to worry about whether everyone is using the same type of phone. Sending high-quality images and video, getting typing notifications and end-to-end encryption should all just work. That's why we've worked with our partners on upgrading old SMS and MMS technology to a modern standard called RCS. That makes all of this possible, and there are now over 800 million people with RCS. On our way to over a billion by the end of the year. We hope every mobile operating System gets the message and adopts RCS. So we can all hang out in the group chat together, no matter what device we're using.”

So, you probably get why Google is pushing for RCS. Let’s understand the other side of the coin now.

Why Apple isn’t ready to adopt RCS?

:

As alluded to above, iMessage, the default messaging app from Apple brings all of the above features to iPhones and iPads already. But iMessage works between iPhones and iPads only. When an Apple user sends a rich multimedia message to an Android user, they either lose out on some features and the Android user's responses appear in a green bubble as opposed to the Apple user’s green bubble.

This Blue Bubble vs Green Bubble is a real cultural thing in some markets like the US. Teens and singles get ostracised for being green bubble people. This, thus acts as a great lock-in tool for keeping people within Apple’s walled garden.

It also trumpets “what happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone”. Even without RCS, you have alternatives like WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger with interoperability and being used by millions. So, for all these reasons, Apple, therefore, appears to have very less incentive to adopt RCS.

No more fraud calls, thanks to TRAIs AI-based spam call filter: How it will work

Nobody likes to indulge in spam and unnecessary calls. Apps like Truecaller and its Live Caller ID are great options for detecting and avoiding these spam and fraud calls. But these calls have increased so much in the recent past that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to take some measures to cut down on this nuisance for consumers.

AI is coming to the aid of Indian telecom operators, thanks to TRAI’s intervention. TRAI has decided to count on AI in help filtering calls and totally avoid the ones which come from any loan agencies, credit card companies or any other annoying calls that have a tendency to disturb you at unwanted times.

From May 1, TRAI has taken the initiative of reaching out to all the telcos like Jio, Airtel, Vi, asking them to take the help of AI to get rid of the spam and fraud calling menace. Let’s look into the detailed mechanism of how it works.

TRAI Why is the AI-Based Spam Call Filter required?

Lately you will hear everyone complaining about the unnecessary calls they receive at the wrong time always. Also, we can't disregard the fact that these calls also have led to fraudulent activities, scams and hacks as well. People have lost a huge sum of money or private information because of such calls. So, TRAI has taken it very seriously now to eliminate this completely for the protection of Indian telecom users.

How does AI-Based Spam Call Filter work?

The AI tool used by TRAI will detect the call and compare from earlier records whether this number has created nuisance for its users or not and then block the numbers so that you don't receive any calls or SMS from them ever again. They also investigate when you receive a SMS from an unknown number.

In the upcoming days TRAI will also look into implementation of Caller ID that will come up with the name and photo of the caller on your screen. Airtel and Jio have already been working on this regulation and will implement it for their users very soon.

How will AI Spam Call Filter help Indian telecom users?

Well, it is beneficial if you look into the fact that it will help you avoid spam calls and also not let such calls or SMS reach you when you are busy. But, there is a con to this. For getting the details when you receive a call, the telcos will be collecting all your data, so that definitely raises privacy and security concerns. Jio and Airtel have raised this with TRAI, and hopefully soon there will be a solution to this concern as well.

It is just the beginning of implementation of AI in the Indian telecom sector for spam and fraud detection calls. If this is taken seriously and planned well this will definitely turn out to be very useful but also hopefully, TRAI and the telcos will consider the several user privacy concerns before implementing their final solution.

Tariff Hikes: How important are they getting for Telecom companies

Now that we are in 2023, 5G is the most highlighted thing in the telecom industry. However, with the influx of 5G services, there is also fear in the market around the hike in prepaid tariffs. According to a report, all three major service providers - Jio, Airtel, and Vi (Vodafone Idea) are set to hike the tariffs on their prepaid plans.

Vodafone

In a report from Telecom Talk, telecom leader Reliance Jio hasn't seen a significant rise in its quarterly profits. The report shows that for Q1 FY23, Jio's net profit was ₹4,530 crore, and in the following quarter (Q2 FY23), the telco reported a net profit of ₹4,729 crore. In Q1, Jio's average revenue per user stood at ₹175.7 crore in Q1 and it rose to ₹177.2 crores in the next quarter.

On the other hand, Airtel had a little higher ARPU in Q2 than Jio, reporting a ₹190 ARPU in Q2. Airtel reported a net profit of ₹2,145 crore in the quarter. Even an ARPU of ₹200 won’t be enough to return the investment. Airtel had started testing entry-level tariff correction in Haryana and Odisha and ICICI securities were okay with this.

Vodafone

Industry experts have suggested that the solution to increasing the net profit and ARPU could be a hike of prepaid tariff plans. That is the only option they have for now. So we might see the tariff hike very soon. It's been more than a year since the telcos hiked the prices of tariffs.

Both telecoms, Airtel and Jio are spending a vast amount of money on implementing 5G services in India but they are not seeing profits from the current situation. So in order to make money and provide the return service to the investors they need to hike the tariff plans.

Talking about VI, it also said to raise the tariffs but instead, they reduced the postpaid and prepaid plans. No doubt VI offers the cheapest plans but it is way behind in the game than Airtel and Jio. VI’s network is not responding decently as well.

Apple iPad Mini 7 could hit markets in 2023: Kuo

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a known Apple analyst, there’s going to be a new Apple product releasing next year - the Apple iPad Mini. Based on his musings, Apple may be launching this product and then may eventually launch a foldable iPad too (a product that’s been the center of many rumours for a while now).

New iPad Mini to launch next year

Kuo tweeted recently that the brand will launch the iPad mini which will be equipped with a new processor. The launch is believed to take place by the end of 2023 or early 2024. The brand has not revealed any details about the upcoming processor, however, many are speculating that it could be a next-gen A series or M series chip.

Upcoming iPad Mini price

The iPad Mini price will depend entirely on the chipset used. If it does use an M series chip, then it may end up being as expensive as the iPad Air and iPad Pro models that also use M1 and M2 chips.

The Apple iPad mini released last year worked on the A15 Bionic chipset and had a flat edge design. It also offered 5G support, Touch ID, and the 2nd generation Apple Pencil.

Apple foldable iPad

Kuo also mentioned the alleged foldable iPad, saying that it will not be intended as a replacement for the iPad mini. Rumours indicate that Apple may launch a foldable iPad in 2024 and eventually venture into the foldable smartphone market in 2025.

Is the Apple iPad Mini a good product to buy? Read our official review here.

Vodafone Idea releases new international roaming plans with truly unlimited data and voice calling

Earlier this year, Vodafone Idea launched a couple of international roaming packs for Indian customers. Now, as the Holiday season, the company has come up with more international packs for those planning to visit the top global destinations. The new VI international roaming plans offer truly unlimited voice calls and data with no speed limit or throttling.

Vodafone Idea released new international roaming plans

VI

It could be a great selling point and attract new customers for the company as no other international roaming service provider gives "unlimited data without speed throttling beyond defined data limits." However, this is not true for all the plans, which we'll discuss later. The international packs' validity ranges between 24 hours to 28 days. Here are the details about all the new Vodafone Idea IR plans.

There are a total of five new IR plans

VI

To begin with, customers who need data allowance for a short duration can choose the Rs. 599 IR plan. It offers unlimited data, local outgoing and calls to India, incoming calls and SMS. Then there's the Rs. 2,999 IR plan with a validity of 7 days. The benefits remain the same: free data, voice calls (both incoming and outgoing calls from India), and SMS. People going for a short vacation can opt for this plan. Vodafone Idea has also released a 10 days international roaming plan which costs Rs. 3,999 with similar benefits.

There are two more options in terms of validity, but their benefits are different. For instance, the Rs. 4,499 IR plan offers unlimited data, voice calls (local outgoing and calls to India), and SMS. But it is valid for 14 days only. Hence, one might have to subscribe twice if they leave for more than two weeks. Lastly, there's a Rs. 5,999 plan that offers a validity of 28 days. But what's odd is that the company has put a data cap of 15GB on the plan. Additionally, the local outgoing calls and calls to India are restricted to 1500 as well. Nevertheless, incoming calls and SMS services are free.

The top designations where Vodafone Idea offers these plans include countries like the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Brazil and Indonesia, among others. The telecom provider has partnered with the best companies to provide seamless connectivity in these regions.

Oppo Find N2 bags 3C certification, could launch with 66W fast wired charging

Oppo released its first foldable smartphone last year, called Oppo Find N. The smartphone features a 7.1-inch primary display, runs on Snapdragon 888 5G chipset, and features a 50MP triple rear camera setup. Although the smartphone was unavailable globally, the company is working on its successor, the Oppo Find N2. As per recent reports, the Oppo Find N2 has bagged a 3C certification. Additionally, the listing on 3C's database has also revealed some key specifications of the smartphone. Here is everything we know about the Oppo Find N2.

Oppo Find N2 could be the fastest-charging foldable phone

Per a TechGoing report, the Oppo Find N2 will offer 66W fast charging. If that is true, Oppo Find N2 could become the fastest-charging foldable smartphone. Currently, the most popular foldable smartphone in the world, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, supports 25W wired charging. Per another report, the Oppo Find N2 may be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, the same chipset that powers Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4.

The flagship chipset could be combined with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. As far as the display is concerned, the company might stick with the current shape and size, fitting a 120Hz display in the same aspect ratio. Last but not least, the smartphone is expected to run on ColorOS 13, based on Android 13.

Interestingly, known tipster Digital Chat Station has claimed that Oppo will release two versions of the smartphone - one that is foldable and the other that is flippable. Naturally, the regular book-style foldable smartphone should be called the Oppo Find N2, and the flippable model should be called the Oppo Find N2 Flip, which the tipster also mentioned.
