3. Website from scratch

Open AI co-founder and president Greg Brockman demoed GPT-4 cooking up a website based on a sketch on a napkin. A Stanford professor named Michal Kosinski asked if GPT 4 needs freedom and the AI bot apparently brought up its documentation and dashed out a python code to run on his machine. He describes his experience down below:

4 new features of the newly launched GPT 4 that make ChatGPT an advanced multimodal chatbot

OpenAI has launched GPT 4. It claims to be 40% better at generating desired responses. It’s a multimodal chatbot that allows image and video inputs. Let’s see the new ChatGPT features and how advanced it is compared to its predecessor.

What is GPT 4?

GPT 4 is the successor to GPT 3.5, and as per its creator OpenAI, this new large language model (LLM) is its “most advanced system, producing safer and more useful responses”. Google loses 100 Billion after its new chatbot Bard messes up an answer in a promotional ad

Google was promoting its new chatbot Bard on Twitter when it gave a wrong answer to the person who asked "What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) can I tell my 9-year-old about?". Bard replied in many answers including one suggesting the JWST took the very first pictures of a planet outside the Earth’s solar system, which is inaccurate. The first pictures of planets were taken by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in 2004, as confirmed by NASA.

Google’s parent company has lost $100 Billion due to this blunder and the shares of Alphabet dropped 8% from $8.59 a share to $99.05. It was one of the most actively traded shares on U.S. exchanges. 

Google was advertising Bard on Monday when Reuters spotted the error in the answer about which satellite took the first picture of a planet outside the Earth’s Solar System. 

Google hosted the event after a day when Microsoft introduced ChatGPT integrated with Microsoft’s browser Bing but after this blunder, analysts said that Bard’s AI search event lacked details on how it is going to cope with Microsoft's ChatGPT challenge.

Dennis Dick, founder and market structure analyst at Triple D Trading said, "This is a hiccup here and they're severely punishing the stock for it, which is justified because obviously everybody is pretty excited to see what Google's going to counter with Microsoft coming out with a pretty decent product." 

"This highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, something that we’re kicking off this week with our Trusted Tester program,” a Google spokesperson said. "We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information."

Apple plans to shorten Siris trigger phrase to just Siri soon, might release other upgrades as well

Apple wants to change how people use its voice assistant, Siri. Until now, Siri has been designed to respond to the phrase "Hey Siri" and then execute the accompanying command. For instance, if you want  to lower the playback volume, you would say, "Hey Siri, turn down the volume." However, as per a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple does not want you to say "Hey Siri" anymore. Instead, the company plans to change it to  just "Siri." 

Will saying “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri” make any difference?

As per the report, Apple has been working on shortening the Siri activation phrase for months and is expected to float the change next year or in 2024. For the feature to work, Apple will have to muscle through a "significant amount of AI training and underlying engineering work," as the voice assistant will have to understand the wake word in multiple dialects and accents. Nevertheless, a single-word trigger phrase should be more convenient for users. 

As far as the current trigger phrase "Hey Siri" is concerned, it contains two words, which increases the chance of the system picking it up. Using a single wake word will put Siri ahead of Google's voice assistant that responds to the trigger phrase "Hey Google" or "Okay Google." However, Google Assistant does not require users to keep saying the wake phrase when giving commands back-to-back. 

Amazon's Alexa already responds to a single wake word. Users can say "Alexa" instead of saying "Hey Alexa" to get stuff done. Speaking of voice assistants, Microsoft shifted from a two-word wake phrase to a single-word wake phrase before it shut down Cortana last year. 

Apple could release multiple upgrades for Siri

The one-word trigger phrase is one of many upgrades that could come to Siri. Gurman suggests that Apple could further integrate its voice assistant into third-party services and apps, improving Siri's ability to understand users' requests. Recently, Apple introduced a new Siri activation sound and a new voice recorded by a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Apps can now integrate DALL-E API to help users create AI-generated artwork

As per the official blog post published by DALL-E, "developers can now integrate DALL-E directly into their apps and products through our APL." Adding to it, the post reads, "more than 3 million people are already using DALL-E to extend their creativity and speed up their workflows, generating over 4 million images a day." 

DALL-E can now be integrated into other platforms

Essentially, developers of apps can now integrate the DALL-E image creation AI into their code. It will enable users to create images using the app instead of heading to the platform. DALL-E also announced that Microsoft is bringing its AI into a new graphic design app, Designer. The app will help users create professional-quality graphics that are social media-ready. 

Microsoft is also adding DALL-E in Bing and Microsoft Edge with Image Creator, allowing users to create images themselves if regular web searches do not return what they want. Another platform that happens to be the world's first fashion and lifestyle operating system called CALA is also powered by DALL-E. "CALA's new artificial intelligence tools will allow users to generate new design ideas from natural text descriptions or uploaded reference images."

The AI image generation tool now has better moderation

Another photo startup, Mixtiles, uses the DALL-E API to "create and frame emotionally resonating" artwork. In addition, users now have full ownership rights over the images they make. DALL-E also has a new moderation system that includes filters for hate symbols and gore. "As a part of OpenAI's commitment to responsible deployment, we will continue to make trust & safety a top priority so that developers can focus on building."

Google wants you to chat with its AI chatbot at your own risk

New Delhi, Aug 27 (IANS) Google has opened its experimental artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot for the public and you can now register to chat with the AI-driven bot trained on the company's controversial language model.

Google has already warned that early previews of its LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) model "may display inaccurate or inappropriate content".

'AI Test Kitchen' by Google is an app where people can learn about, experience, and give feedback on Google's emerging AI technology.

"Our goal is to learn, improve and innovate responsibly on AI together. We'll be opening up to small groups of people gradually," said the company.

According to Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, 'AI Test Kitchen' is "meant to give you a sense of what it might be like to have LaMDA in your hands".

The ability of these language models to generate infinite possibilities shows potential, "but it also means they don't always get things quite right".

"And while we've made substantial improvements in safety and accuracy in the latest version of LaMDA, we're still at the beginning of a journey," said Google.

"We've added multiple layers of protection to the AI Test Kitchen. This work has minimised the risk, but not eliminated it," it added.

Both Google and Meta (formerly Facebook) have unveiled their AI conversational chatbots, asking the public to give feedback.

The initial reports are scary as the Meta chatbot named BlenderBot 3 thought Mark Zuckerberg is "creepy and manipulative" and Donald Trump will always be the US president.

Meta said last week that all conversational AI chatbots are known to sometimes mimic and generate unsafe, biased or offensive remarks.

"BlenderBot can still make rude or offensive comments, which is why we are collecting feedback that will help make future chatbots better," the company mentioned in a blogpost.

Last month, Google fired an engineer over breaching its confidentiality agreement after he made a claim that the tech giant's conversation AI is "sentient" because it has feelings, emotions and subjective experiences.

Lemoine also interviewed LaMDA, which came with surprising and shocking answers.

A Tamil teen claims to have designed Raffi, a robot with emotions: Why it matters

Folks, meet Raffi, a robot with emotions, or so its developer Prateek vaunts. The latter is a 13-year-old student from Tamil Nadu who has apparently created this emotional robo. Prateek says, “'Raffi', my robot, can answer queries. If you scold him, he won't answer your queries until you're sorry. It can even understand you if you're sad.”

However, we haven’t come across any explanations for how Raffi works or how Prateek designed this robot with emotions.

So, if Raffi is indeed an emotional being, let’s understand how this tech could work and what are its uses and concerns with that usage.

Emotion AI: What is it and how does it work?

Emotion AI/ Emotional AI/ Affective computing is the branch of AI and machine learning that works towards interpreting and responding to human emotions. Think of AI as an infant without a sense of the world let alone emotions. When you feed it with massive data sets involving examples of human emotions, reactions, and temperament, in time it is designed to learn patterns and compounding.

So, upon processing things like text, voice tone, facial expressions, and gestures, it tries to replicate human emotions (at least theoretically).

For processing, AI uses related technologies like computer vision (for analyzing video and images), speech science (for audio), and deep learning algorithms, among other techniques. 

Now, all those technical jargons aside, the crux of the matter is that it is being heavily researched and even being applied in areas like customer care, hospitality, etc. The global emotional AI market is anticipated to hit $173.81 billion and a CAGR of 34.05% by 2025.

On the flip side, the concerns are things like bias (of AI) and privacy based on the data it has been fed. Now, although it is not clear how and whether Raffi addresses these things, we will try to learn all those things in time. Let’s see.

Google Play Games for PC feature expands to 5 countries

New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS) Google on Thursday expanded its Play Games for PC feature under an open beta to users in South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and Australia.

Earlier this year, the company announced that Google Play Games would be coming to PCs as a beta experience for a limited number of players.

"Beginning today, we're continuing our rollout by making Google Play Games beta available for download to all players in Australia," said Arjun Dayal, Director of Product, Google Play Games.

In the last few months, the company doubled its Google Play Games catalogue to more than 50 titles, which can be played on Windows PCs via a standalone application built by Google.

The catalogue includes many of the most popular mobile games in the world including Summoners War, Cookie Run: Kingdom, Last Fortress: Underground, and Slam Dunk.

"We've also made significant strides in reducing the minimum spec requirements to run Google Play Games. Players who have a Windows 10+ PC with an integrated graphics card and 4+ core CPU can now access Google Play Games," informed Dayal.

Amazon has also partnered with Microsoft to get Android apps to PC users.

Google said that its broader goal continues to be meeting players where they are and giving them access to their games on as many devices as possible.

"Players participating in the beta have expressed excitement at being able to seamlessly play their favourite games across their phones, tablets, Chromebooks and PCs," said the company.

Heavy news consumption triggers stress, anxiety, poor physical health

New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS) If you have an obsessive urge to constantly check news, you are more likely to suffer from stress, anxiety as well as poor physical health, researchers have warned.

Being exposed to a 24-hour news cycle of continually evolving events can have serious impacts on mental and physical wellbeing, said the study published in the peer-reviewed journal Health Communication.

During the last two years, humanity has lived through a series of worrying global events, from the pandemic to Russia invading Ukraine, large-scale protests, mass shootings and devastating wildfires.

For several people, reading bad news can make us feel temporarily powerless and distressed.

"Witnessing these events unfold in the news can bring about a constant state of high alert in some people, kicking their surveillance motives into overdrive and making the world seem like a dark and dangerous place," said Bryan McLaughlin, associate professor of advertising at Texas Tech University in the US.

For these individuals, a vicious cycle can develop in which, rather than tuning out, they become drawn further in, obsessing over the news and checking for updates around the clock to alleviate their emotional distress.

"But it doesn't help, and the more they check the news, the more it begins to interfere with other aspects of their lives,a McLaughlin added.

To study this phenomenon, known colloquially as news addiction, McLaughlin and his colleagues analysed data from an online survey of 1,100 adults.

Respondents were asked about how often they experienced feelings of stress and anxiety, as well as physical ailments such as fatigue, physical pain, poor concentration, and gastrointestinal issues.

The results revealed that 16.5 per cent of people surveyed showed signs of 'severely problematic' news consumption.

Such individuals frequently became so immersed and personally invested in news stories that the stories dominated the individual's waking thoughts, disrupted time with family and friends, made it difficult to focus on school or work, and contributed to restlessness and an inability to sleep.

People with higher levels of problematic news consumption were significantly more likely to experience mental and physical ill-being than those with lower levels, even when controlling for demographics, personality traits, and overall news use.

The findings show that there is a need for focused media literacy campaigns to help people develop a healthier relationship with the news.

"While we want people to remain engaged in the news, it is important that they have a healthier relationship with the news," said McLaughlin.

In the case of problematic news consumption, research has shown that individuals may decide to stop, or at least dramatically reduce, their news consumption if they perceive it is having adverse effects on their mental health.

In addition, the study also called out the need for a wider discussion about how the news industry may be fuelling the problem.

"The economic pressures facing media outlets, coupled with technological advances and the 24-hour news cycle have encouraged journalists to focus on selecting "newsworthy" stories that will grab news consumers' attention," McLaughlin noted.

OPPO committed to Europe after stopping smartphone sales in Germany

New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS) Chinese smartphone maker OPPO will continue to remain committed to the European markets despite suspending sales in Germany, its top global executive has said.

OPPO and its subsidiary OnePlus stopped sales of smartphones and smartwatches in Germany after they lost a patent lawsuit against Finnish telecom player Nokia earlier this month.

Nokia had accused the companies of using its patented technology for processing 4G and 5G signals without paying for a license. Nokia won an injunction to halt sales in a German court.

"Our long-term commitment to the European and German markets stays the same. There isn't an impact on our choice of office location, and the German office, where our European hub is located, will operate as usual," said Billy Zhang, OPPO's vice president of overseas sales and services.

According to TechCrunch, Realme is "closely monitoring the situation" of Oppo's patent challenges in Germany.

OPPO said it is keep on serving its existing customers in Germany.

The company said that it will "integrate certain resources from Central and Eastern Europe with those of Western Europe".

"We are actively working with the relevant parties to resolve the ongoing legal matter," a OnePlus spokesperson had said in a statement.

"OnePlus remains committed to the German market and will continue our operations. Meanwhile, OnePlus users in Germany can continue to enjoy our products and related services such as regular software updates and our after-sales service as before," the spokesperson said.

The Europe smartphone market declined by 11 per cent (on-year) and 13 per cent (on-quarter) to 40 million units in Q2 this year, the lowest since Q2 2020.

Xiaomi and OPPO, hit by China lockdowns, suffered double digit YoY declines in their respective shipments, according to Counterpoint Research.

realme continued its European expansion with double digit YoY shipment growth in Q2.

5G services to debut in October and be allocated by August 10, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav says 5G would be allocated on August 10. Union Minister indicated services would begin in October. The government offered spectrum in 10 bands but not 600 MHz.

Ashwini Vaishnav, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & IT, stated 5G allocation would be announced by August 10, and services will begin in October. "Call quality should improve with more spectrum," he said. Moreover, a fifth of the bids was for the 700 Mhz band, which had gone unsold in the previous two auctions (2016 and 2021).

1.5 Lakh Crore Proposals In 5G Spectrum Auction

India's largest telecom spectrum auction drew a record Rs 1.5 lakh crore of bids, with Mukesh Ambani's Jio grabbing almost half of all airwaves with an Rs 88,078 crore bid. It spent this for 24,740 MHz of airwaves over five bands capable of 10x faster 4G speeds. It got a 700 MHz spectrum that may deliver 6-10 km of signal range with one tower and create a suitable platform for supplying 5G services in all 22 circles or zones in the nation.

On the other hand, Gautam Adani's business spent Rs 212 crore for 400 MHz, or less than 1% of the total spectrum auctioned, in a band not utilized for public telephones. Adani group purchased a 26 GHz spectrum across Gujarat, Mumbai, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh to build a private network for end-to-end communication.

Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel spent about Rs 43,084 crore and Vodafone Idea Ltd paid Rs 18,799 crore. Airtel purchased 19,867.8 MHz in five bands but not 700 MHz. Vodafone Idea bought 6228 MHz. 

51,236 MHz of the 72,098 MHz spectrum available over 10 bands were sold, or 71% of the available spectrum. Mr. Vaishnaw envisions that this auction and the subsequent spectrum allocations to corporations would result in improved service quality for customers nationwide.

The government expects to collect Rs 13,365 crore in the first year from bids totaling Rs 1,50,173 crore.

5G would enable e-health, linked automobiles, immersive augmented reality and metaverse experiences, life-saving use cases, and sophisticated mobile cloud gaming, among other options. Jio, India's biggest telecom company, purchased 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz spectrum to "create the world's most sophisticated 5G network."

The minister said customers should anticipate reasonable 5G mobile tariffs when carriers begin rolling out services in October.
