Apple TV+ will focus on creating quality content over quantity, says Eddy Cue

Apple will be adopting a quality-over-quantity model for AppleTV+, the company’s upcoming streaming service. Senior Vice President of services and programming, Eddy Cue said in an interview with The Sunday Times that Apple won’t be flooding people’s screens with too many choices like Netflix does. Instead, it will focus on ‘creating the best’. However, when asked what he thought of Netflix’s model, he said there’s nothing wrong their model, but it’s not something Apple will follow.

The response was a jab at Netflix’s streaming model. The US-based streaming giant releases as much original content as it can to attract viewers, which sometimes can be overwhelming for the subscribers. Apple will instead release one new show every month, starting with the new Workplace drama called The Morning Show starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston.

While Netflix, Hulu and Amazon have been present in the industry for much longer, Apple is very much a latecomer to the show. Add to that the upcoming services from Disney and Warner Bros, Apple will have to deal with a lot more incumbents than its major rivals, when they started off.

Cue was quick to remind that Apple has been the latecomer, when it comes to hardware. Cue pointed out that Apple wasn’t the first to make computers, tablets or smartphones. He explained that Apple “doesn’t know much about television other than we are big consumers of it”, but what it does know is to “find the best people for it”. In fact, Apple had on stage Hollywood stars like Steven Spielberg, J.J Abrams and more, when it announced the service.

Apple certainly has an impressive lineup of creators working on new shows. Here’s the list of shows that we know are coming to Apple TV+ —

1. The Morning Show, Drama.

Starring Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell.

2. See, Sci-Fi

Starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard

3. Little America, Drama

Starring Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon and Lee Eisenberg.

4. Helpsters

“Sesame Street” spinoff.

5. Little Voice, Comedy Drama

Executive produced by J.J. Abrams.

6. “For All Mankind”, Sci-Fi Drama

Starring Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, Sarah Jones, Shantel VanSanten, Wrenn Schmidt, and Jodi Balfour.

7. Truth Be Told, True Crime

Starring Octavia Spencer, Lizzy Caplan, and Aaron Paul

8. “Amazing Stories”, Anthology

Directed by Steven Spielberg.

9. “Servant”, Psychological Thriller

10. “Home Before Dark”, Mystery Drama

11. “Dickinson”, Comedy

12. Unnamed Oprah and Prince Harry Mental Health documentary series.

Apple discovers faulty logic board in some 2018 MacBook Air models, offers free repair

Apple has discovered that a “very small number” of MacBook Air laptops sold last year feature a faulty logic board and that they would need replacing. According to 9to5Mac, which received access to some internal documents, confirmed in its recent report that Apple Stores and authorised Apple service centres have been instructed to replace the faulty logic boards at no extra cost to customers.

According to 9to5Mac’s report, Apple sent out a memo to its staff about the “issue” it found in the main logic board of the 2018 MacBook Air. It claims that the issue is found in only certain serial numbers. Users with an affected unit should receive an email from Apple about the issue and the company's offer to have the issue rectified for free. Apple has yet to list the free repair service on its Exchange and Repair Extension Programs website.

Apple reportedly lists the symptoms discovered in the logic board as something to do with “power” but does not go into the details of the problem. Some customers of the 2018 MacBook Air had reportedly complained of booting issues right after purchase. If you believe your MacBook Air from last year is one of the units affected, you could have it checked out by a service personnel from the nearest authorised Apple service centre. If it is indeed an affected unit, you will be entitled to a free replacement of the logic board inside.

The MacBook Air, which received a much-needed upgrade last year, features a 13.3-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD Retina display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. It is powered by an Intel 8th Gen Core series CPU with RAM ranging from 8GB to 16GB. Storage is taken care of by a PCIe-based solid-state drive whose capacity goes from 128GB to 256GB. It is offered in three colours: Gold, Silver, and Space Gray.

Tata Sky reduces prices of its set-top boxes again

Tata sky has reduced the prices of its set-top boxes again. As per the second revision in the prices of the boxes, the Tata Sky HD set-top box will now be available at Rs 1,499, and the SD set-top box will cost Rs 1,399. The DTH provider’s move is seen as its aim to further expand its presence in the country. The latest price cuts also likely to encourage the sale of the HD variant owing to just Rs 100 difference between the prices of the two boxes.

It should be noteworthy that this reduction in prices is up to Rs 300 from the previous price cut. After the previous price cut which was announced last month, Tata Sky HD set-top box was available for Rs 1,800, while the SD variant was priced at Rs 1,600. In comparison, Dish TVs HD set-top box is priced at Rs 1,590 and the SD variant is available at Rs 1,490.

The move comes two weeks after the company discontinued multi-TV connection plans from June 15, which means that users with a multi-TV connection would have to pay for each and every connection separately that they have at their homes. After facing backlash from its users, the company announced a new ‘Room TV service' that is aimed at making it more ‘feasible’ for consumers to select TV packs on their multi-TV connections.

Users with secondary connections can now have different channels and services on all connections. “Subscribers can seamlessly choose the content of their choice on the secondary connections and only pay for the selected content. Their secondary connections can now have different channels and services from the base pack selected for the first connection in the house under the same subscriber ID,” Tata Sky had said. The new option can be accessed via the company’s website or the Tata Sky mobile app.

US companies can sell their equipment to Huawei: Trump

Offering an olive branch to Huawei Technologies, US President Donald Trump has said that the administration will now allow the Silicon Valley companies to resume business with the companies. This likely means that the Chinese telecom equipment maker and 70 of its affiliates will be removed from an “entity list” which forbids US companies from doing business with it. The move comes as the Washington agreed to restart trade talks in order to reduce tensions with Beijing.

“We’re right back on track,” Trump said at an 80-minute meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 (G20) summit of major economies in Osaka, Japan. “US companies can sell their equipment to Huawei. We’re talking about equipment where there’s no great national security problem with it,” he added.

“These are American companies producing the products. This is complex ... highly scientific. We are the only one with the technology. I have agreed to allow them to continue selling the products … I like our companies selling things to others ... very complex things. These are not things easy to make ... our companies were very upset, but we are allowing them. So if it is not a national security issue, we are allowing them to sell,” the US President noted.

According to a report, US-based chipmakers, like Qualcomm and Intel, lobbied, and quietly pressed the US government to ease restrictions on the sale of equipment and services to the Chinese tech giant. It was reported that executives from Intel and Xilinx Inc attended a meeting in late May with the US Commerce Department to discuss a response to Huawei’s placement on the entity list. “This isn’t about helping Huawei. It’s about preventing harm to American companies,” one of the people was quoted as saying.

Reportedly, out of $70 billion that Huawei spent buying components in 2018, some $11 billion went to US firms including Qualcomm, Intel and Micron Technology Inc. The Chinese tech giant also works with companies like Google and Microsoft, and uses their software in phones and computers. Further, telecom giants like Vodafone and EE also shrug their shoulders and followed other companies in cutting ties with the company in the European market.

WhatsApp has a positive impact on psychological health of users, finds study

Online communications apps and the amount of time people spend using them has been a topic of debate for a long time now. At a time when social media apps are introducing digital well-being tools to their platforms, a new study published in the Journal of Human-Computer Studies has found that using apps like WhatsApp has a positive impact on mental health.

The study was conducted on 200 WhatsApp users who completed an online questionnaire measuring their usage of WhatsApp and motivations, online bonding, quality of relationships, group identity, and psychosocial outcomes. The study found that online bonding through WhatsApp, which also facilitates group chats and calling, makes people feel less lonely and has a positive impact on their self esteem.

The study titled 'Psychosocial Outcomes Associated with Engagement with Online Chat Systems' has 158 female and 42 male participants. It found that "minutes per day using WhatsApp was positively related to quality of relationships".

"The more time people spent on WhatsApp, the more this related to them feeling close to their friends and family and they perceived these relationships to be good quality," said Dr Linda Kaye, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, England-based Edge Hill University.

"It gives rise to the notion that social technology such as WhatsApp may stimulate existing relationships and opportunities for communication, thereby enhancing aspects of the users' positive well-being," she added.

15-year-old stabs brother to death for not letting him play PUBG Mobile

A 15-year-old boy from Thane, Mumbai allegedly killed his elder brother who was scolding him for playing PUBG Mobile, the police have said. 19-year-old victim Mohammad Shaikh has asked his younger brother to stop playing PUBG Mobile on his phone and this allegedly resulted in the boy flying into a fit of rage.

PTI reports, quoting senior police inspector Mamata D’Souza, that the minor allegedly banged Shaikh’s head against the wall and then repeatedly stabbed him with a pair of scissors after being repremanded for playing PUBG Mobile.

Shaikh was taken to a government hospital after the incident occurred but he had succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on arrival.

A case has been registered by the police under section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

PUBG Mobile has been associated with several violent incidents in the past, resulting in murders and even suicides. The battle royale game is hugely popular in India and has been considered to have a negative impact on children. However, it is important to consider that just like any other game, this one too should be played in moderation.

Google reduced ability of device manufacturers to use Android alternatives: Competition Commission of India

Google has been accused of imposing “unfair conditions” on device manufacturers and abusing the popularity of its Android platform by the competition watchdog in India. It was earlier reported that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered an investigation into Google’s anti-competitive practices in India, but the details of that directive were not disclosed at the time.

Now, a Reuters exclusive bares those details after conducting a review of CCI’s 14-page order. The said order reveals that the CCI found Google imposing “unfair conditions” on device manufacturers. It says that by making pre-installation of Google apps conditional, the company has, “reduced the ability and incentive of device manufacturers to develop and sell devices operated on alternate versions of Android,” thereby flouting India’s competition laws. “It amounts to prima facie leveraging of Google’s dominance,” CCI said in the order.

Last week, it was reported that CCI is scanning Google’s agreements with OEMs and the conditions which the company places in those agreements. The CCI is said to have handed letters to several OEMs asking about their relationship with Google.

The investigation unit of CCI is expected to complete the probe into Google’s activities within 150 days of the April 14 order by CCI. However, as happens in cases like these, the matter could be dragged out for longer.

In a similar case last year, Google was fined $5 billion by the EU antitrust regulators for abusing the dominance of its Android platform.

According to Reuters, the complainants in the India case allege that Google engaged in similar anti-competitive practices in India “with the aim of cementing Google’s dominant position”.

Last year, a fine of $20 million was imposed on Google by the CCI for Search bias and abusing its dominant position. Google’s appeal against the fine is still pending.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G launching in December, Mate X to be announced in September

Things have been slightly uncertain for the Chinese smartphone and telecom equipment maker Huawei ever since it was put on the US Entity List. The company can no longer use Android on its yet to be registered phones and is currently serving a 90 day grace period to deliver updates and patches to its existing handsets. However, it seems to be positive about the current situation getting better as it has confirmed the timeline for the launch of its upcoming handsets. In a 5G conference in Russia, Huawei confirmed that it will launch the 5G variant of its upcoming Huawei Mate 30 handset in December.

It’s now confirmed and hardly surprising that there’s a 5G version of the Huawei Mate 30. However, the timeline company has shared is most likely to apply for the Russia launch of the handset. If Huawei sticks to its usual timeline, we can expect the standard Huawei Mate 30 to launch sometime in November. In addition to the possible launch month of the Huawei Mate 30, the smartphone manufacturer has also announced that its foldable Mate X handset will be launched in September. It seems like the company is taking its time to bring its first foldable phone to the market and we can’t blame them after what happened with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold.

Speaking of the Huawei Mate 30, there are some rumours about the handset making the rounds of the internet. The upcoming handset’s design was recently leaked in a concept render, and a media report suggested that its display might have a 90Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the Pro version of the phone was spotted on TENAA in 6GB and 12GB RAM variants. Renders of the phone hint at a rounded rectangle camera module that houses four sensors and an LED flash. While the specifics are yet to be revealed, the handset’s camera is said to support  5x optical zoom and 50x digital zoom, similar to the P30 Pro.

Nokia 2 will not get the Android 9 Pie update

While Nokia has been pushing the Android 9 Pie update to most of its devices, it looks like there is at least one device that will not be getting the update, and that is the Nokia 2. Launched back in 2017, the company promised at least two years worth of updates. However, it looks like that’s not happening. According to a post by an admin on the Nokia community forums, the device will not be getting the new update, or any other subsequent update for that matter.

The thread was started by one user who was chatting to a company support representative, who said that the team was working on bringing the update to users. This understandably got users quite excited.  However, community admin, Laura, had to step in and quash the rumours stating, “From our internal testing, the Nokia 2 is not able to offer complete end user satisfaction with the later OS Upgrades. As a result, we will not be offering Android 9 Pie (or any subsequent Android Upgrades) to Nokia 2.”

The Nokia 2 isn’t a powerhouse of a phone to begin with. The device was launched in late 2017 with Android 7.1 Nougat running out of the box. The budget smartphone is powered by a 28-nanometre Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chipset with 1GB of RAM. It features a 5-inch 16:9 display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. Photography is taken care of by a single 8-megapixel camera with autofocus on the back and a single 5-megapixel selfie shooter in the front. It also packs a 4,100mAh battery, which Nokia claims can power the phone for two days on a single charge.

The company did announce the Android 8 Oreo update for the phone back in March this year. However, the Nokia warned its users that the update may result in performance issues. It further added that some applications may not be supported.

Xiaomi inviting users to test Android Pie update for Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and Android Q for Poco F1

Back in April, Xiaomi announced that it is dropping software support for its Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and the Redmi S2 (Redmi Y2) smartphones. The news must’ve let down many customers since the three phones were launched last year in India. However, the company later clarified that the Redmi Y2 will receive the Android Pie update and it seems to have changed its plans again to bring the same update for the Redmi 6A and the Redmi 6 handsets. Xiaomi is inviting MIUI testers for the Android Pie global stable ROM for the two phones. As per a blog on the Mi forums, it will perfect the ROM to release it soon for the public, once it is done with testing.

In addition to the Redmi 6A and the Redmi 6, Xiaomi is also inviting users to test out the Android Q global ROM update for Poco F1. This means that the Android Q update is almost ready for Poco F1 users. In case one is interested to test out the aforementioned global builds on their handsets, they can apply to receive the update here. However, there are some requirements to be eligible for receiving the update. While the offer is open for users in all regions, the communication language needs to be English and QQ must be used as the communication tool. The users also need to ensure that their device has an unlocked bootloader and has the latest MIUI Global Stable ROM installed. In addition, the new version is unstable so the user needs to back up their data and install it using the Mi flash tool.

It is slightly reassuring that Xiaomi is not dropping software support for its phones out-of-the-blue. Previously, an admin, on MIUI forum, said that the Android 9 Pie update for Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and the Redmi S2 have been suspended. There was no detailed information as to what the reason was. However, since the company is rolling out updates, users of these phones don’t seem to have any reason to worry.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Pro may be called Galaxy Note 10+, images leaked

For a while now, reports suggested that the larger variant of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 10 smartphone will be called the Galaxy Note 10 Pro. However, recently leaked images suggest that the phone will in fact be called the Galaxy Note 10+. This makes a lot more sense considering the fact that Samsung designates the ‘+’ moniker to its larger devices. The most recent example being the Samsung Galaxy S10+.

The images were posted by YouTuber, TechTalkTV posted the images online. The images suggest that Samsung will stick with the ‘Infinity-O’ punch-hole design introduced with the Galaxy S series. However, the front camera has been moved to a more central position, instead of a corner. At the back, the device is shown to sport a triple-rear camera setup, with the three sensors stacked vertically. This is the same design that was suggested by case renders for the device, which popped up online a few weeks back.

Reports suggest that the larger variant of the Galaxy Note 10 will feature a 6.8-inch display, as compared to the 6.4-inch display found on the standard version. Further, it is tipped to offer a minimum of 256GB of storage, and going all the way up to 1TB, while the standard Galaxy Note 10 is expected to offer at least 128GB storage. Reports also suggest that the phones may ship with a 25W fast charger. There are also unsavoury rumors that Samsung may finally ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack with the Galaxy Note 10 series. While the South Korean company hasn’t finalised the launch date for the new Note series of devices, reports suggest that the company may launch the device on August 7, in New York.

Facebook testing notification badge controls for its mobile app

Facebook is allegedly testing the ability to turn notifications for specific parts of its mobile app on and off. After spending years trying to figure out how to keep people engaged within its app, Facebook is finally taking a step in the direction of decency, with the realisation that people don’t need to be constantly poked (no pun intended) about something that they “may” be missing.

Discovered by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, the feature is currently being tested on both iOS and Android versions of Facebook’s mobile apps. The feature would allow you to turn on or off badges within the Facebook Mobile app for each of the tabs such as groups, marketplace etc. Facebook said in a statement to TechCrunch that “We are testing new ways to give people more control over the notifications they receive in the Facebook app.”

Facebook has been under fire for a long time now for the way it works on keeping users hooked to the app, given that the company’s revenue depends on the average time users spend on the app. Badges, in that regard, served as a constant nudge for users to open the app. Facebook, however, is not alone in creating products that have had an irresponsible impact on consumers. Most tech companies have been at the receiving end of parents’ ire for making their products addictive. This prompted companies like Google and Apple to introduce software controls in their smartphone OS called Digital Wellbeing and Screen Time respectively. Facebook too was planning a similar feature, but for now, we will have to settle with the ability to control which tabs within their mobile app get to generate a visible notification. The feature is currently in testing and there is no word on when Facebook will actually roll it out to the public.

Google rolls out auto-delete controls for Location History and activity data on Android and iOS

Google collects user data to improve the overall experience of its services and provide ads, however, some may get offended by the fact that the company is tracking their each and every move to build behavioural patterns using AI. To address this issue, the company introduced auto-delete controls for Location History and activity data a week ahead of this year’s Google I/O. These controls are aimed at providing users more tools to keep their personal information protected. Google has now announced that it has started rolling out auto-delete controls and you can find them in the My Activity menu within the Google app.

For those who don’t know, users already have an option to turn the Location history off manually. With the latest roll out, users won’t have to worry about manually switching the toggle on or off, and can just set one of the three settings provided in the app. Google’s new auto-delete controls for Location History and Web & App Activity data let users set auto deletion of data every 3 months or 18 months. The third option is still for user to manually delete it.

“Whether you’re looking for the latest news or the quickest driving route, we aim to make our products helpful for everyone. And when you turn on settings like Location History or Web & App Activity, the data can make Google products more useful for you—like recommending a restaurant that you might enjoy, or helping you pick up where you left off on a previous search. We work to keep your data private and secure, and we’ve heard your feedback that we need to provide simpler ways for you to manage or delete it,” Marlo McGriff and David Monsees, Product Managers at Google wrote in a blogpost at the time of introducing it.

Auto-delete controls for Location History start rolling out today on Android and iOS, making it even easier for you to manage your data → https://t.co/dX1uoqcR8O pic.twitter.com/Oc3fk66QNm

— Google (@Google) 26 June 2019 How to access these settings:

First, you need to open the Google App, and tap the three dots (‘more’ option) in the bottom right corner of the screen. Tap “Search Activity,” and Google will automatically sign-in with your account. You will be greeted by a “Search Activity” screen. Scroll down and choose “Choose to delete automatically” option. From the next screen, you can choose one of the three options, tap “Next” and your preferences will be saved.

Lenovo showcases Qualcomm 5G-enabled laptop at MWC Shanghai

Do the words Project Limitless ring a bell in your head? They might remind you of a 5G-enabled concept laptop that was unveiled by Lenovo at this year’s Computex in Taipei. The Chinese PC manufacturer collaborated with American 5G chip maker Qualcomm for the joint project. What with 5G being the theme of this year’s MWC Shanghai, Lenovo decided to showcase its laptop once more at its stall during the event.

Lenovo had a concept unit of its 5G-enabled laptop to show at MWC Shanghai. Lenovo says in its official news release that it’s powered by the newly developed Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx 5G compute platform, which incorporates the company’s Snapdragon X55 5G modem. Although Lenovo did not go into the specifications of the laptop, its 5G-labelled demo unit greatly resembles a YOGA 730.

“With real 5G in a PC, it’s all about satisfying users’ need for speed: faster file transfers and streaming in 4K, 8K and even AR/VR; faster and higher quality video chats on-the-go; even faster screen refreshes for mobile gaming,” Johnson Jia, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Business of Intelligent Devices Group, Lenovo had said in a news release that the company sent out after the first unveiling of the laptop at Computex.

Lenovo and Qualcomm’s Project Limitless is expected to advance in early 2020, which means that we could see a proper saleable model from the Chinese PC maker at next year’s Computex. If our guess is as good as yours, we might just end up seeing a next-generation YOGA or IdeaPad model with 5G capability. In related news, Lenovo unveiled a foldable PC with a 2K OLED panel, Intel processor, and Windows 10 about a month ago. You can read more about that here.

Striking Distance is PUBG Corporations new game studio working on a narrative-led PUBG game

PUBG players might be in for a treat as the game’s developer has announced a new gaming studio that is working on creating an original narrative experience within the PUBG universe. What this means is that there is a new story mode in the works, set in the PUBG universe. While the story mode is confirmed, it is yet to be known whether the it will be introduced within PUBG or if it will be a new PUBG game altogether. The entire project is being led by PUBG Corporation’s new game development studio called Striking Distance, which is headed by Glen Schofield as the CEO.

Schofield is a veteran in the game development industry with over 28 years of experience. He worked on the development of third person horror shooter Dead Space and was the general manager and co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, which is the gaming studio known for making Call of Duty titles. “Throughout my career, I’ve had a lot of opportunities to make some remarkable games that tell incredible stories, and each of them has meant something special to me,” says Schofield. “But now, those learnings will help me build a AAA team that can explore new designs and concepts at Striking Distance. As a creative, the freedom to explore the PUBG universe has me excited about the possibilities, which I view as beyond the battle royale genre.”

The new gaming studio is building a new team from scratch to work on the upcoming PUBG project and it is looking to hire some talent too. Right now, there’s no more information on what Striking Distance will be working on, how the project will be directed and when the new narrative experience is expected to release. However, Schofield confirmed in a tweet that the project is not a sequel to PUBG but an original narrative in the PUBG universe.

The only thing I can say now is that I’m not working on a sequel to PUBG, but an original narrative in the PUBG universe.

Humongous returning asteroid to pass by Earth today

It’s not every day that we get to witness a huge cosmic object fly by our planet, especially an object this large. Named 2008 KV2, the object in question is an asteroid that’s reported by Space.com to be three times the length of a football field. The asteroid is expected to swing by at a distance of about 6.7 million kilometres from our planet today. Even though its distance from our planet is great, one should be able to observe 2008 KV2’s flyby using the right scientific equipment.

For those of you worried that 6.7 million kilometres may be too close for comfort, here’s some perspective. The moon is approximately 3,84,400 kilometres away from us. In comparison, the asteroid is about 17 times farther than that. So there’s little need to worry about a head-on collision with the flying leviathan. 2008 KV2 is expected to be flying with 0.05 astronomical units of Earth. In other words, the big rock is expected to be doing around 40,800 kilometres per hour when it passes us by.

As you probably have worked it out by now, our cosmic guest was first discovered by scientists in 2008. Since 2008 KV2 is orbiting the sun as well, it’s expected to make another pass in 2021 and two more in 2022. Although the rock is travelling millions of kilometres away from us, it’s labelled as a “potentially hazardous asteroid” by NASA. This is mostly because of its size and distance from us. After all, 2008 KV2 is classified by experts as a Near Earth Object (NEO).

According to a report by Interesting Engineering, asteroids have been talked about a lot at NASA of late. Another huge asteroid that’s expected to swing by our planet later is Apophis. But that won’t happen till April 13, 2029. “We already know that the close encounter with Earth will change Apophis' orbit, but our models also show the close approach could change the way this asteroid spins, and it is possible that there will be some surface changes, like small avalanches,” Davide Farnocchia, an astronomer at JPL's Center for Near Earth Objects Studies (CNEOS), was quoted as saying.

OnePlus 7 Series Closed Beta Program launched, company is hiring 250 testers

OnePlus is on a hunt for closed beta testers for its newly-launched OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7 smartphones. The company has now opened the programme, and is inviting applications for the same. This will be the first time that the Chinese tech company will be shortlisting 250 people for its Closed Beta Program. Through the Closed Beta Program, the OnePlus works to improve its products on the basis of feedback given by users. OnePlus says that the programme also helps it refine or revise its product strategy as well.

While this may sound like a very good opportunity for those who are interested, it is not easy to become a closed beta tester. The first thing that is considered is the eligibility. In order to be eligible, a person has to meet certain requirements. Firstly, he/she should be a OnePlus 7 series device users. Secondly, he/she should be an active OnePlus Community member, and thirdly, the person should be willing to constantly communicate and provide feedback to the OnePlus team on Slack. If you meet these requirements, you can apply here.

OnePlus 7 Series Closed Beta Program

The second step is committing to the company. The closed beta testing team is the closest group to OnePlus' staff. This group is made up of a crew of OnePlus community members. Due to this, this group needs absolute secrecy, as testers will often get builds and features weeks or even months before they are released to the public. Hence, those chosen will be required to sign an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) with OnePlus to be part of this programme.

If you aren’t already aware, certain companies, including OnePlus, test features of their products before they are released to the masses. To help accomplish this goal, OnePlus runs the development of the OxygenOS in three different “streams”: Closed Beta, Open Beta, and Official Release. Closed Beta (called Alpha Builds) is the place where the coding of a feature begins. The feature is very unstable and the team associated with it tests new (and sometimes experimental) code and features. The big goal here is to get initial feedback on new ideas.

The second step is the roll out of Open Beta, which is often called Community Builds. This beta is available to a much larger chunk of people than the closed beta. These testers then test the features developed by the Closed Beta team and give their feedback. The feature is then tweaked so that a polished version can be churned out of it. The last stage is the roll out of the feature which is released to the masses.

Huawei US ban prompts Indian Government to build its own Sarkari WhatsApp for official communications

Government of India is reportedly planning to build its own WhatsApp-like chat platform to facilitate secure communications for government agencies citing overdependence on American technology companies. Economic Times reports that the need for the said platform was felt by officials in the Indian government after US companies cut ties with Huawei, following sanctions placed on the company by the US Department of Commerce. The government wants to cut out the middlemen and setup a secure communication channel over indigenously developed networks.

“There are strong discussions that for strategic and security reasons, over a period of time, we should have email, messaging…all sorts of systems, at least for government communication, which doesn’t depend on outside players,” a senior government official told ET on conditions of anonymity. “We should have some form of a sarkari WhatsApp,” the official added.

To keep interactions on its chat platform safe, the government is in discussions to have all the data generated by the platform stored in data centres located within India.

As mentioned before, the Indian government's plans to develop an internal and independent communications network comes after the United States imposed restrictions on US companies from doing business with Huawei. The Chinese company has been charged with bank fraud, violation of Iran sanctions, theft of trade secrets and espionage in the US, because of which companies like Google, Qualcomm and others had to halt business with it.

Sale of Huawei’s 5G telecom equipment is also barred in the US and the country is reportedly pressurising the Indian government to ban Huawei from selling 5G infrastructure in India. While India has not yet taken a call on this, Huawei is currently seeking the government’s approval to conduct fresh 5G trials in India. The Chinese firm has also offered India a "no back door" agreement.

“Look what happened to Huawei, their Honor (branded) phones. It was unthinkable, but now it has definitely rung alarm bells with us. Tomorrow, if the US finds us unreliable for some reason, all they need to do is ask their companies to slow down networks in India and everything here will come to a standstill. We are vulnerable and we must take steps to cover that,” the official told ET.

Further, the government wants officials to stop using platforms like WhatsApp or Gmail in light of American companies resisting India’s data localisation efforts.

FedEx sues US government, blames export rules after goofing up Huawei shipment

US-based company FedEx has filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Commerce for enforcing prohibitions contained in the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The EAR governs whether a person may export an object from the US, re-export an object from a foreign country, and transfer an object from one place to another in a foreign country. In a public statement, FedEx mentioned that the regulation was creating an impossible burden for the company. The lawsuit also challenges the organisation to change the export rules, The Verge reported.

FedEx filed the lawsuit just a few days after mistakenly refusing to deliver a Huawei device into the US. When FedEx refused to deliver the Huawei device to the consignee in the US, it returned it to the sender in the UK with the following message on the package: “Parcel returned by FedEx, due to US government issue with Huawei and China government.” In its lawsuit, FedEx also mentioned that it believes that “the EAR violate common carriers’ rights to due process under the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution as they unreasonably hold common carriers strictly liable for shipments that may violate the EAR without requiring evidence that the carriers had knowledge of any violations.”

In the complaint filed by FedEx, it is also mentioned that FedEx believes that the EAR, as currently constructed and implemented, places an unreasonable burden on companies like FedEx. In an interview with Fox News, Fred Smith, the CEO of FedEx, said that export control was creating “confusing situations” for FedEx and that the Huawei shipping error was emblematic of an ongoing problem. The package being sent to the US was a Huawei P30 smartphone.

Last month, the US government added the Chinese tech giant Huawei to the list of entities. The US government banned Huawei in the country by saying that Huawei’s hardware puts the US at risk for espionage. After the whole controversy last week, Huawei sued the U.S. Department of Commerce by claiming that its telecommunications equipment was wrongfully seized.

Oppo showcases under-display camera tech with customised display at MWC Shanghai

So the speculation turned out to be true and Oppo has made a breakthrough by premiering the first ever phone with an under-display camera. At the ongoing MWC Shanghai, the Chinese tech company pulled the covers off of a phone that neither has a notch nor a pop-up camera mechanism for front shooters. In a press note on its website, Oppo said that it has been “continually pushing the boundaries for bezel-less phone designs” (Oppo Find X) and this is the latest iteration in the race to create a perfect solution for a bezel-less, notch-less design. The company has been teasing this technology since the start of this month.

On June 3, Oppo India tweeted a short video. In the video, the company showcased the under-screen camera as a functional feature. Oppo says that users will see a short animation highlighting the position of the front-facing camera during selfie mode that will help them locate the camera. “Otherwise, it's invisible while watching videos, playing games, reading emails, making video calls with friends and family,” the Chinese company claimed.

OPPO's brand new solution for full-screen display - Under-screen Camera (USC) has just been unveiled here at #MWC19 Shanghai! #MoreThanTheSeen pic.twitter.com/k5qEQ3QNta

— OPPO India (@oppomobileindia) 26 June 2019

But how did Oppo make the technology work? The company incorporated a customised display. The part of the screen, under which the camera module is fitted, is made of a highly-transparent material with redesigned pixel structure to ensure that optimal amount of light enters through it. The camera used in the tech is also customised with a large aperture, a big sensor and pixel size to dodge light refraction (bending of light after it enters from one to another). Since the camera has a thick material above it, it was expected that the photos would come out blurry.

The algorithms behind our USC technology showcased at #MWC19 include haze removal, HDR and white balance resulting in a bezel-less phone, yet with a selfie camera that rivals current smartphones in the market today. #MoreThanTheSeen pic.twitter.com/yTpWgIMLmA

— OPPO (@oppo) 26 June 2019

To combat this problem, Oppo introduced three algorithms to enhance the camera performance. The first one is the White Balance in which the company made targeted adjustments and calibrated the colour against any light sources that might obstruct the image. The second one is the HDR algorithm that helps in reducing overexposed highlights and increases brightness in case of shadows or underexposed parts of an image. Finally, the Haze Removal algorithm increases the sharpness of the image.

Oppo says that it will deliver the “futuristic, notchless, unibody and highly-recognizable smartphone in the near future,” however, it did not delve out any information about the rest of the specs of the phone.

BSNL is also adding some new plans to its broadband service that will offer up to 3GB of daily data with speeds of up to 8Mbps. The state-run telco will soon unveil three new plans that are aimed at consumers who do not require high data volume but relatively good speeds at a lower price. The new plans are priced at Rs 349, Rs 399 and Rs 499, and they will be available in all circles, except Andaman and Nicobar.

The Rs 349 plan is called ‘2GB BSNL CUL’ and it offers bandwidth of up to 8Mbps till 2 GB data per day, beyond which the user get speeds of up to 1Mbps. There are also some voice benefits with the plan like unlimited free calls to any network between 10:30 PM and 6am everyday, and on all Sundays. Additionally, one can place free calls worth Rs 600 to any network and calling any BSNL connection is free as well. The Rs 399 pack is called ‘2GB CUL’ and similar to the Rs 349 plan, it offers speeds of up to 8Mbps till 2GB per day and upto 1Mbps after that. However, there are no voice restrictions on this plan and one can place unlimited calls to any network.

Coming to the Rs 499 pack, it is denoted by 3GB CUL it delivers 8 Mbps speed till 3GB data is used up. After the limit, one will get to access the internet at speeds of up to 1Mbps. Similar to the Rs 399 plan, there are no restrictions on voice calling with this plan and one can place a call on any network at any time. As mentioned earlier, these three new plans will be available for everyone, except users in Andaman and Nicobar, from July 1.

Apple iPhone XI cases show cut-outs for lightning port, square camera module

The square camera module is probably the most talked about addition to the iPhone XI but there’s another important piece of tech that everyone is looking up to, which is the refresh of the phone’s charging port. There are already a lot conflicting reports about Apple moving on from the regular Lightning Port of the iPhones to the USB-C ports found in the latest iPad Pro devices. According to the latest information coming from a UK-based retailer, it seems that Apple will continue to stick with the Lightning Port in the next iteration of iPhones.

The retailer has listed cases for the upcoming iPhones and they delve key information on the above-said topics. The website shows that the Olixar cases it is selling on the website are a perfect fit. For that, the retailer has uploaded a bunch of images which give a 360-degree view of the upcoming device. In one of the images, the bottom edge is seen sporting a familiar cutout for the Lightning Port. This could mean that the Cupertino-based giant is still not ready to take a leap to introduce USB-C handset.

Apple iPhone Tempered Glass For Camera

Further, the cases also confirm the square module that was leaked in the photos shared by Digit in January this year. Olixar even made a tempered glass protector for the camera. As per the image, it sits over the camera hump and features four holes – three for the cameras and one for the flash. This apparently strengthens Digit’s iPhone XI leak. In case of the rumoured XR models, there is a same square cutout in the case.

Apple iPhone XIR Case

Apple’s iPhone XI rumoured camera design have been in the news a lot. This could be due to two reasons: First, it has been dubbed ugly due to the design (which apparently attracted a lot of attention), and the second could be the company’s silence on it. Unlike Apple, Google has already made it official that the next Pixel phones will have an iPhone-like camera module. This has left tipsters with no fodder leaving them with no choice but to remain off record for some time.

Samsung Galaxy A90 to launch with Snapdragon 855, Tilt OIS

There have been several rumours about an A-Series flagship phone from Samsung. Likely to be called the Galaxy A90, the phone has been touted to sport a triple camera system. Adding to the rumours is the latest development, which claims that the phone will launch in two variants. Based on a tweet by known tipster Steve H.McFly (aka OnLeaks), the development mentions that the devices will bear SM-A905 and SM-A908 model numbers.

This also comes with two important details. First, the phone will not belong to the R-Series as mentioned before and will indeed be an A-Series handset. Second, this will be the first A-Series phone to come equipped with Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 855 chipset. This could make it a notable competitor in the affordable flagship segment that already has the OnePlus 7, Asus 6Z, Oppo Reno 10X Zoom and the upcoming Redmi K20 Pro.

In order to somehow make amends, I bring you the key specs of these devices - SM-A908: SD855, 6.7-inch screen with in-display FPS, 48+8+5 rear camera, 5G support. - SM-A905: SD855, 6.7-inch screen with in-display FPS, 48+12+5 rear camera with exclusive Tilt OIS tech! Cheers! pic.twitter.com/uqfFTnfoIQ

— Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks) 25 June 2019

According to OnLeaks, the SM-A905 will be a 4G version of the Galaxy A90 and will feature a 6.7-inch screen. The phone will also sport an in-display fingerprint sensor. As mentioned, the phone will a triple rear camera setup, and as per OnLeaks’ tweet, the module will have an 48MP sensor, 12MP camera and a 5MP sensor. The setup will reportedly be equipped with an exclusive feature called “Tilt OIS”, however, there are no details of what this tech does.

The SM-A908, on the other hand, will be a 5G handset. This means that the Snapdragon 855 processor will have Qualcomm’s 5G chip. The phone is said to feature that same display (with the in-display fingerprint scanner), but will have a slightly different camera configuration. It will reportedly have a 48MP sensor along with and 8MP one (instead of SM-A905’s 12MP sensor) and 5MP camera. Recently, a report claimed the Galaxy A90 5G could be Samsung’s most affordable flagship phone.

NASA is launching a contest for naming its 2020 Mars rover

NASA is looking forward to launching a nation-wide contest in the US for naming its 2020 Mars rover. The space agency is also looking for judges for the same contest. NASA wants to engage K-12 students (12th-grade students in US) particularly for the naming contest.

NASA has joined hands with Battelle Education, of Columbus, Ohio, and Future Engineers, of Burbank, California for the MARS 2020 “Name the Rover” contest. The contest will be live for US students this fall. The agency says that the contest is aimed at engaging the public in its mission to the Moon and Mars. Meanwhile, applications for becoming a judge of the contest is available online.

George Tahu, Mars 2020 program executive at NASA's Planetary Science Division said,  "We’re very excited about this exceptional partnership. Contests like this present excellent opportunity to invite young students and educators to be a part of this journey to understand the possibilities for life beyond Earth and to advance new capabilities in exploration technology.”

The Unnamed rover will seek signs of past microbial life, characterise the planet's climate and geology, collect samples for future return to Earth, and pave the path for human exploration of the Red Planet. NASA is planning to launch this in July 2020 and expecting it to touch the Martian surface by February 2021.

NASA says that it is also focusing on national goals through its “Name the rover” project. It will help US students get acquainted with engineering and scientific work that makes Mars exploration possible.

The two companies involved have been assigned separate jobs.

Battelle will connect students to the Mars 2020 mission through its portfolio of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) networks. It will also help recruit judges and students as well as curate resources for teachers. Future engineers will host the “Name the rover” contest through its web platform.

NASA space technology missions launched on SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket

As part of the Department of Defense’s Space Test Program-2 (STP-2), four NASA missions were sent to space yesterday at 2:30 AM EDT (12:00 PM IST) from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The launch vehicle used for the missions was the Falcon Heavy partially reusable rocket designed and built by SpaceX. While the Elon Musk-led space agency managed to launch the rocket into space successfully, it failed to save the center core of its rocket.

NASA, on the other hand, is currently getting busy with the deployment of its missions, which it believes could one day help the agency get astronauts to Mars. They are also designed to help NASA understand the space environment around us better. All four missions will operate for about a year each, which is sufficient time for them to mature and be tested, says NASA in its news release. According to Jim Reuter, Associate Administrator for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate, the missions “benefited from strong collaborations with industry, academia and other government organizations.” Here’s a summary of what NASA intends to do after the launch:

Enhanced Tandem Beacon Experiment

NASA’s E-TBEx (Enhanced Tandem Beacon Experiment) is made up of a couple of NASA CubeSats that work in conjunction with NOAA’s COSMIC-2 mission, which in turn, consists of six satellites, each carrying a radio occultation receiver developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Together, E-TBEx will explore bubbles in the electrically-charged layers of Earth’s upper atmosphere, which are capable of disrupting communications and GPS signals that we depend on every day.

NASA’s E-TBEx operators will take up to three weeks to “check out” the CubeSats to ensure power, navigation/guidance, and data systems are in order. Then science beacons that send signals to antennas on the planet will power up and begin transmitting to ground stations. The mission will end after about a year’s time.

Deep Space Atomic Clock

NASA’s new timekeeping device is quite literally out of this world. According to NASA, its Deep Space Atomic Clock is a toaster-sized instrument travelling on a commercial satellite. This particular atomic clock will test a new way for spacecraft to travel in space. In the future, the atomic clock could help uncrewed and crewed rovers get around on the Moon and Mars using a GPS-like navigation system.

The ultra-stable oscillator, the component that is partly responsible for precise timekeeping, is set to power on two to four weeks after the launch. The entire atomic clock is up and running in about four to seven weeks after launch. The preliminary performance of the device is tested three to four months after launch. A full year or so later, the mission ends and the final data analysis begins.

Green Propellant Infusion Mission

The GPIM or Green Propellant Infusion Mission powered on as soon as it was launched in space at 3:57 AM. It involves the test of a new propulsion system that runs on a high-performance, non-toxic spacecraft fuel. It could help propel constellations of small satellites in and beyond low-Earth orbit, explains NASA.

Mission operators are expected to ensure the correct operation of the propulsion system heaters and thrusters one to three weeks after the launch. During the first three months, GPIM will be used to perform three lowering burns that place the spacecraft in an elliptical orbit. With each burn, the spacecraft gets closer to Earth. The secondary instruments aboard GPIM are to measure space weather and test a new system that continuously reports the spacecraft’s velocity and position. After a year, a final burn is performed to deplete the fuel tanks on GPIM. The mission ends after 13 months.

Space Environment Testbeds

The US Air Force Research Laboratory’s Demonstration and Science Experiments (DSX) were the last mission to be launched from the STP-2. Space Environment Testbeds, or SET, is an instrument made by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It will be used to study how to protect satellites from space radiation better by analysing the harsh environment of space near our planet and test various methods to lessen the impacts.

The Sun is one of the elements causing harmful radiation. SET will be turned on three weeks after launch. Data collection will begin eight weeks after launch. The mission ends after a year. “It was gratifying to see 24 satellites launch as one,” commented Nicola Fox, Director of the Heliophysics Division in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. “The space weather instruments and science CubeSats will teach us how to better protect our valuable hardware and astronauts in space, insights useful for the upcoming Artemis program and more."

Xiaomi Mi CC9 white edition revealed officially, images of retail box leak online

Xiaomi is gearing up to introduce a new smartphone series in China called the ‘CC’ series. The Mi CC9 will be one of the smartphones in the new lineup, which is confirmed to come equipped with a 32MP camera on the front and a 48MP shooter on the rear. More details about the upcoming phone are starting to surface as an image of the handset was officially posted by the company online. The image reveals the design element of the Mi CC9's rear panel and the rear camera setup. Additionally, some images of its retail box were leaked online and the company quickly followed up by officially releasing the same images.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun shared an image of the upcoming Mi CC9 handset on Weibo. The smartphone is seen in a white colour called ‘White Lovers,’ and features a glossy pearl-white finish on the rear panel that looks similar to the White colour model of the Huawei P30 Pro. The images reveal a vertically aligned triple-rear camera setup on the back, one of which is confirmed to feature a 48MP sensor. The rear panel can be seen featuring a gradient design and the glass is slightly curved on all four sides. On the bottom is a Type-C port and a 3.5mm jack. The SIM tray sits on the device’s top edge.

As mentioned earlier, images of the handset’s retail box were also posted online. Xiaomi is aiming the phone at the youth and that is reflected in the graphics of the phone’s box. It is colourful and sports the ‘Chic’ and ‘Cool’ keywords associated with the new series. However, it doesn’t reveal any new details about the upcoming Mi CC9 smartphone.

Alongside the Mi CC9, Xiaomi will also announce the Mi CC9e, which is speculated to be a less powerful version of the handset. A leaked image of the handset suggests that there might be a flip camera module on the device, similar to the one we have seen on the Asus 6Z.

Oppo Reno 5G launched at MWC Shanghai

Oppo has become the latest Chinese smartphone-maker to foray into the 5G space. After launching the 4G versions of the Oppo Reno and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom in China, Europe and India, the company has unveiled the 5G variant of the flagship model. Apart from the latest and fastest mobile network support, the specs of the Oppo Reno 5G remain the same. Unfortunately, the phone will not make it to India anytime soon because the country does not have the necessary 5G infrastructure in place yet.

Oppo Reno 5G Specifications:

As mentioned, the 5G variant of the Oppo Reno sports the same hardware as the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom (Review). The phone sports a Full HD+ 6.65-inch AMOLED display that offers 2340 x 1080 pixels resolution. Thanks to the shark-fin type pop-up camera, the phone is claimed to deliver a 93.1 percent screen-to-body ratio. The flagship has a Gorilla Glass 6 protection, and it sports a sixth-generation in-screen fingerprint sensor. On the back, the Oppo Reno 5G has a glass finish and there is "5G" branding above the camera.

The phone has the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and a 5G modem at the heart. It offers up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via a microSD card. The phone houses the same 4,065mAh battery as it is in the 4G variant. This comes as a surprise because there’s a general notion that 5G sips up more battery than the 4G networks. The phone ships with VOOC 3.0 fast charging support.

Oppo Reno Display

When it comes to gaming, Oppo has included Game Boost 2.0 acceleration engine and Dolby Atmos support for an optimised gaming experience. The phone has HyperBoost 2.0, which includes GameBoost, SystemBoost, and AppBoost. Oppo says that this technology brings performance improvements in terms of game experience, system speed and APP opening speed, respectively.

The phone features copper tube liquid cooling tech for heat dissipation and keep the temperature of the phone under control. Oppo says that the tech includes a combination of Thermal Gel, a Graphite Sheet, Copper Pipe Liquid Cooling, and a Tri-cooling Control to manage the temperature of the smartphone. It runs Android 9 Pie-based ColorOS 6 and has an AI-powered Breeno virtual assistant.

In terms of optics (Camera Review), the Oppo 5G features a triple camera setup on the back. The three sensors include a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor with a f/1.7 aperture and OIS, an 8MP secondary sensor with f/2.2 aperture, and a periscope telescopic lens complemented with a 13MP sensor. The triple camera setup is coupled with dual-LED flash and laser autofocus tech. On the front, the phone is equipped with a 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, and an LED flash.

Vivo iQOO 5G phone and Super FlashCharge 120W tech announced at MWC Shanghai

Digit is at MWC Shanghai, which has kicked off today with some major new announcements from Vivo. The company showed off some new products like a pair of Vivo AR Glasses with Jovi digital assistant, the 5G variant of its iQOO smartphone and the 120W SuperFlash Charge tech. The 5G model of the Vivo iQOO sports a design similar to the regular iQOO handset and it is being demoed as a prototype, with an offical launch expected in Q3 2019. The handset is powered by the Snapdragon 855 SoC, which is paired with an external Qualcomm X50 modem to enable 5G connectivity.

In addition to the smartphone, Vivo demoed its new fast-charging technology, which is officially called Vivo Super FlashCharge 120W. As the name suggests, the new tech can charge a phone at 120 watts, 6A at over 20V. The company claims that it can fully top up a 4000mAh battery in under 13 minutes and top it to 50 percent in merely 5 minutes. The company had previously demoed the fast charging tech where the battery capacity of a device did reach 50 percent in 5 minutes. The tech inside the charging unit is similar to Warp charging tech that OnePlus employs.

Vivo is not the only company that is working on charging tech to top up smartphones faster. Back in March this year, Xiaomi showcased its 100W Super Charge technology in a video. A 4000mAh battery was seen being topped up to 100 percent in 17 minutes and Xiaomi compared its tech with Oppo’s 50W SuperVOOC charging. Xiaomi’s 100W Super Charge technology runs at 20V/5A, which is slightly lower than Vivo’s new Super FlashCharge. However, it won’t be surprising to see Oppo adapting to the new Vivo charging tech, along with OnePlus, since they are sister companies that are owned by BBK Electronics.
