Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 9 start receiving December security update

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 9 devices have started receiving the December 2019 security patch. The update brings with it the security patch only and no new functionality. The update for the Galaxy Note 10 is version N97*FXXS1ASKB and is available in 25 European markets only. There is no information on when the update for the Note 10 will come to India. The Note 9 is getting the update in Germany only as of now with the update number N960FXXS4CSK. There is no information on when the update will come to India. Those using a Note 10 or a Note 9 can go into the settings app on the smartphone and selecting Software update. If the update is available, users can download and install it.

In other Samsung news, the company has filed a trademark for a new sensor called ‘Bright Night’. The filing suggests that it will be used in smartphones and tablets. Speculations suggest that the sensor will be used for low light photography. Leaks and rumours are abuzz about the features coming to the Samsung Galaxy S11 family of devices and one can expect the new sensor to make its debut on the new devices.

Samsung has also filed a patent for a feature called ‘Space Zoom’. Once again, details about the feature are not yet known, except for the fact that it will offer lossless zoom. It is possible that the feature is aimed at helping with Astrophotography, a much-touted feature in the Pixel 4. The upcoming Samsung phone is tipped to feature a quad-rear camera setup with support for 5x optical zoom. It is also tipped to feature a 2nd Gen 108MP sensor. To recall, Samsung unveiled the 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor in August this year. The sensor was developed in partnership with Xiaomi and is used in the Mi Note 10 smartphone.

Face recognition systems reportedly active at Chaayos without the option to opt-out

According to a report by Medianama, a popular tea outlet in India Chaayos is gathering users face data without giving customers the option to opt-out of it. The popular chain is doing this as an alternative to OTP. In the UI of the display where one has to register, there is no option to opt-out of facial recognition. There is only a “start” option. There are a lot of questions that are left unanswered. For example how long is the data stored? Where is it stored? How long is it stored for? What other uses can Chhayos use the facial data for? Medianama points out that “In case the police approaches a Chaayos outlet to investigate a case, will the company share this facial data with them?” There is also no assurance on the safety of this data being collected.

Nikhil Pahwa, founder and editor of MediaNama said, “I was buying tea and didn’t even notice what was on the screen, and suddenly, the screen showed me. Remember, all this is happening without facial recognition norms, or a privacy law in India.”

In a series of tweets, Nikhil Pahwa says, “Issues: 1. No terms & conditions displayed.  2. Consent isn't real when there's no opt out option.  3. We don't know if Chaayos will sell this data/gives itself the right to.  4. We don't know what kind of other data this facial info is being linked to. We don't know what kind of info this data will be compared with from other external databases.  5. Biometric info is a permanent username+password. Should not be used. 6. This is sensitive personal info.+”

Chaayos terms and conditions page says the following which is quite alarming. It reads, “Unless a law prohibits us from excluding or limiting our liability, we are not liable for any loss you incur in connection with Login service, or your instructions, or any unauthorised transactions through or in connection with the Chaayos Face Login service. You agree to undertake any direct or indirect claims, legal procedures, legal liabilities, loses, damages arising from our actions in accordance with your orders or notices and all expenses (including all legal costs) which are of reasonable amount whatsoever and howsoever caused that may arise to be reasonably incurred by us in providing Chaayos Face Login service to you. And you promise to indemnify us, upon our request, for the losses and expenses that we have suffered”. You can read the complete terms and conditions here.

According to the source, Chai Point has had a similar system in place since 2018. The function of the system is the same, to remove the need for OTP.

Vivo hosting event for V-series launch on December 9, could be the Vivo V17

Vivo is hosting an event on December 9 for a new smartphone launch. The company has sent out invites for the same and it’s largely expected to be the Vivo V17. The smartphone was launched in Russia earlier this week and rocks a dewdrop notch and a diamond-shaped camera module.

The same smartphone was also launched in the Philippines as the Vivo S1 Pro. The smartphone rocks the Snapdragon 665 along and a 48MP rear camera and a 32MP selfie camera on the front. There’s also a 4,500mAh battery to boot. In contrast, the Vivo V17 Pro, launched earlier this year rocks dual selfie cameras in a pop-up module along with a 48MP quad-camera setup at the back.

The invite that Vivo sent out confirms it is a V-series smartphone launching on December 9. That gives more fuel to the rumour that it’s the Vivo V17. Interestingly, the invite shows a hole-punch camera in the graphic. A recent report also tipped Vivo is planning to launch the Vivo V17 with a hole-punch display in India. The report also claimed Vivo will ditch the waterdrop notch for a more premium look.

Twitter is testing Reddit-esq nesting conversations

Looks like Twitter will be taking a leaf out of Reddit and is testing ‘nested’ replies. The feature was spotted by app researcher, Jane Manchun Wong. The new feature aims to make it easier to follow conversations. It was noted that the feature was first seen on Twitter’s beta testing app, Twttr and should roll out to the general public sometime in 2020.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the new feature is a part of the company’s broader plans to bring feature from Twttr to the Twitter app. However, the spokesperson also noted that not all features discovered by Wong would be a part of the launch of the global version of the app. Just the “best parts”.

Twitter continues working on Conversation Tree now with the ability to focus a specific tweet, even from a permalink pic.twitter.com/CVadSqbFDP

— Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane) November 26, 2019

In related news, it was recently reported that Twitter planned to remove accounts that haven’t signed in for six months or more. The plan is scheduled to start from December 11, but a spokesperson said that closing said accounts may take months. The move is aimed at cleaning up the platform and present more accurate, credible information that is reliable. Twitter has also said that it will find a way to memorialise accounts of people who have died but didn’t really say anything beyond that. So hopefully, we will not lose accounts of some of our loved ones who passed away a few years ago.

Apple could bundle AirPods with 2020 iPhones: Report

The Apple AirPods are one of the best-selling Truly Wireless Earphones in the market today. Now, according to a new report by DigiTimes, Apple is planning to bundle AirPods with the upcoming iPhone 2020 models. The report also mentions Samsung and Xiaomi are also planning on doing the same.

The reports cites industry sources behind the scoop, and considering the patchy reputation of the publication in predicting developments, it’s better to take this report with a pinch of salt given the high asking price of AirPods.

Apple sells the AirPods for more than Rs 10,00 and it’s difficult to imagine the company simply ditching a major source of revenue and bundling the product with the iPhones of the future. But then again, Apple introduced the AirPods Pro a few weeks back which has been selling out everywhere and Apple has already decided to increase production.

If the AirPods Pro becomes Apple’s premium play, the AirPods can indeed come bundled with the 2020 iPhones. You can surely expect the price of iPhones to shoot up even more, if that’s the case. Apple also might look to modernise the iPhone packaging. So far, Apple has been bundling Lightning EarPods with every new iPhone and bundling AirPods could be a way to catch up with changing times.

LG UX 90 showcased, coming to LG G8X ThinQ in the future

LG’s new UI is out and the company has made some serious new changes to how LG smartphones will look from the inside. Called LG UX 9.0, the new interface improves upon the aesthetics of UX 8.0, and introduces new features to make usability of a LG smartphone much better.

LG phones were long overdue of an UI overhaul considering its phones received a lot of flak over its choice of UI aesthetics. That’s soon to change and by the looks of it, LG has taken big inspiration from Samsung’s OneUI.

The company released an YouTube video showcasing the changes and in the video description, it says the UI will first come to the LG G8X ThinQ at some point in time.

LG UX 9.0 incorporates bubbles everywhere with rounded corners. There’s more space between elements while the fonts are much bolder. The bottom of the screen will house a lot of actionable items, which should be easily reachable by the thumb. The new UI also brings a dark mode which can be scheduled and a new tablet UI for better multitasking.

By the looks of it, LG seems to have borrowed some aesthetics from iOS and some from Samsung’s OneUI. But then again, everything these days seems to be a copy of the other. What’s more important is that the UI should make using LG phones better. It looks more modern, for one.

Airtel users can now use VoWiFi calling when signal strength drops

Airtel has been working hard on improving its network and it was reflected in the October 2019 Mobile Network experience report. The telco managed to win the best video and download speed experience award and now, it is finally enabling VoWiFi service for its consumers. First reported by ET Telecom, Digit also received the confirmation from an Airtel spokesperson that the service is being rolled out for consumers. While most of us are familiar with Voice over LTE or VoLTE, VoWiFi is a rather fresh term that signifies Voice over WiFi. As the acronym suggests, the option enables placing and receiving calls over a WiFi network.

If you are on Airtel and are using a smartphone that supports WiFi calling, enabling the option is quite easy. The option should be available in your phone’s connectivity menu in Settings. On the Samsung Galaxy S10, the option is nested under the Connections tab with the label Wi-Fi Calling. Just toggle the option to on and your calls should automatically be placed via WiFi when your network strength is insufficient. The key advantage of the option is that one need not download any external app to make WiFi calls. Currently, apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and others enable voice calls using the internet, but this option is slightly more convenient.

The option can be expected to help Airtel users connect calls when they are in an area with poor network connectivity but are still connected to a WiFi. However, Airtel is not the only one working on the feature. We previously reported that Jio is testing VoWiFi calling and is expected to soon deploy the technology widely. The option to place VoWiFi calls on the Jio network is currenly showing up on some devices.

Our weekly Binge Guide featuring Red Sparrow, The Irishman and more films to keep you glued to your seat

One more week and we're almost down for the count down! We’re sprinting towards the end of the year and what better time to kick back and check out some of the best films and shows on our list? You know you won’t be disappointed by these choices, right? Check them out.

Netflix:

Dark

One of the best shows on Netflix, Dark is a twisted ale of time travel and dark secrets. You should all definitely be checking out this hidden gem on Netflix. Just remember that you’ll have to do a lot of reading as the show is in German with English subtitles.

The Irishman

Martin Scorsese is a filmmaker’s filmmaker and whatever said and done, his films will stand the test of time. The Irishman is his latest work of art that tells the story of an Irishman who gets involved with the mob. It has a 3-and-a-half-hour runtime so make sure you’re stocked up for this film.

Happy Death Day

Written by comic book scribe Scott Lobdell, Happy Death Day is the best Groundhog Day reboot we’ve gotten. The film tells the story of a girl who keeps restarting the day after she’s murdered. Obviously she has to find out who is killing her over and over again.

Hotstar:

Incredibles 2

The first Incredibles was a fun, family film that told the story of a family of superheroes who have been outlawed but are called back into action when a supervillain threatens the city they live in and the second film is no different. If you like Jack-jack, you’ll love the second installment of the Incredibles.

Red Sparrow

Jennifer Lawrence stars in this action/thriller about the Russian spy system back in the day. It’s a tough and harrowing look at the things people have to do in order to become a successful spy. It’s a gritty and tight film that is very different from the usual Hollywood trope.

Deadpool 2

What can we say about Deadpool 2 that hasn’t been said by other reviewers? The film is insane and has got some of the best superhero jokes and jabs. Also, Deadpool gets ripped in half by a mystery character. Like, what could be better than that?

Prime Video

The Report

FBI agent Daniel Jones performs an exhaustive investigation into the CIA's use of torture on suspected terrorists. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the CIA adopted new interrogation techniques. It’s a heavy film, no doubt, but Adam Driver is a standout here.

Beautiful Boy

A heartbreaking film about the horrors and turmoil of drug addiction. The film stars Steve Carell as a father who is at the end of the line dealing with his son who is addicted to meth. It’s a sad and beautiful film at the same time.

The Town

Ben Affleck showed us all that he’s an excellent director with this film. The Town deals with the fallout and breakup of a crew of bank robbers who have to hit one more score to set them up for life. Full of action and a great story, The Town is a perfect weekend film.

Now that Apple lead designer Jony Ive has left the company, what will its future products look like

It looks like it’s the end of an important era over at Apple as renowned designer Jony Ive has been removed from the Apple Leadership page. This could mean that Ive has left the San Cupertino giant. Ive was crucial in the design of the Apple products since he joined the company in 1992 and started leading the design team from 1996 onward.

Most industry insiders knew that Jony was going to leave Apple ‘later this year’ as per a June press release. It has been suspected that Ive was not involved in the design of Apple products for a long time as he was distracted by the construction of Apple’s futuristic headquarters. Not all is gloom and doom though as Apple will still retain the services of LoveFrom, Jony’s design firm that he started with his collaborator Marc Newson. It will be interesting to see what Apple and LoveFrom can come up with.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, said that, “Apple will continue to benefit from Jony’s talents by working directly with him on exclusive projects, and through the ongoing work of the brilliant and passionate design team he has built.” COO Jeff Williams will be taking over the software and hardware design teams going forward.

Researchers develop solid-state battery that doesnt catch fire when heated

In the last few years, the only notable update to battery technology in smartphones has been the boosting of charging speed. After the Samsung Galaxy Note7 fiasco, one would think that we’d have seen newer battery technologies start trickling into the market, but that has not yet been the case. Hopefully, this may change very soon thanks to a research team at Australia’s Deakin University, who’ve managed to use common industrial polymers to create a solid-state battery with double the density. If that wasn’t enough to get you excited, what’s more, is that the researchers have concluded that the battery of their design won’t explode or catch fire if overheated.

Batteries in general, if you think about it, are just miniature explosives waiting to go off with one wrong move. Lithium, as an element, in its pure form is so volatile that it catches fire even when it comes in contact with air. Thankfully, manufacturers use a less reactive version of lithium, usually Lithium Cobalt Oxide. However, the liquid electrolyte that serves as the medium for electron-flow, is the most prone to catching fire. The liquid electrolyte has been a part of the battery structure since the very beginning and not much has changed with regards to it.

There has been a lot of research into solid-state electrolytes in the last few years. A solid-state electrolyte would allow for a much higher density of charge, effectively increasing the capacity of the battery, without increasing its overall size. Second, batteries with solid state electrolytes have been shown to have a much-reduced self-discharge rate, meaning they retain their charge longer when not in use. However, their biggest advantage is in the form of safety, as the solid-state electrolyte does not catch fire when heated.

The research paper published by the researchers outlines how their solid-state electrolyte is not only safer, but would also work with a lithium anode, the only thing that’s causing the energy-density bottleneck. The team has already tested out the new material in button cells and will be moving onto pouch-type batteries found in smartphones. If that goes well, the team says they will be reaching out to investors in order to manufacture bigger batteries that could be used in electric vehicles and even airplanes. The fact that the team has used existing polymers to create the electrolyte means there is no special manufacturing process, meaning it should be relatively easy to make the electrolyte available commercially.

The implications for solid-state electrolytes in batteries would be huge. For starters, it would be safe again to put batteries into check-in luggage, atleast theoretically. Electric vehicles would become safer, besides also offering longer range on a single charge. However, while the electrolyte itself isn’t a fire risk, we still don’t know how the battery would react in the event of physical damage or worse, a puncture. Regardless, this is a very exciting development, one that we hope makes its way into commercial devices soon.

Samsung to start manufacturing 14nm CPUs for Intel: Report

Samsung could soon be manufacturing PC CPUs for Intel. According to a report by SamMobile, Samsung may have acquired the contract to build 14nm Rocket Lake CPUs for Intel, after it was reported that the negotiation were in its final stages. Intel has been looking for contractors to keep up with a surge in PC demand.

Intel has been facing a shortage in 14nm CPU supply since the second half of 2019, so much so, that the company’s Executive Vice President Michelle Johnson had to publicly apologise for the shortage in a letter last week stating that growth in the PC market has outpaced Intel’s efforts to manufacture CPUs.

The reason for the supply crunch is primarily because of the company’s efforts to set up new assembly lines and upgrading existing ones for 10nm production. It will also take a few years for Intel to complete the upgrade. In the meantime, the US-based company has been looking for contractors so ensure a smooth supply of 14nm CPUs.

Samsung was perhaps the only one to take up the challenge. Since there aren’t many foundries in the world capable of CPU manufacturing, and TSMC was already making chips for AMD, Samsung may have been the default option for Intel to outsource its production. Samsung is also big enough to meet Intel’s demand.

Samsung is the world’s largest maker of semiconductors by revenue. The most important contributor has been memory chips, which contributes 40 percent of the global DRAM market and one-third of the NAND market. But the memory chip market also has a tendency to be quite volatile and with China also speeding up its readiness to manufacture memory chips on its own, Samsung has been looking to divest its interest more towards non-memory chips. That’s where Intel fits in, essentially making the deal a win-win for both parties.

Tesla Cybertruck could be added to Dubai Polices fleet of supercars

Everybody knows that the Dubai police force has some of the coolest, most expensive luxury and high-performance cars in its fleet. It’s why it comes as no surprise to us that it could get the recently unveiled Tesla Cybertruck when it goes on sale in late 2021. Dubai Police, which recently added a Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S to its fleet, hinted that they might acquire a Tesla Cybertruck on their official Twitter account by posting an image of it with the force’s green-white livery.

The Tesla Cybertruck is set to go on sale in late 2021 but Dubai Police’s tweet reads simply, “#CyberTruck Dubai Police - 2020” with a Photoshopped image of Tesla’s new all-electric pickup truck. The truck in the image sports the force’s official green-white livery. Apart from that one indicative tweet, Dubai Police have not sent out any official confirmation on the early acquisition of the Cybertruck from Tesla. For this reason, we feel the force could well have cashed in on the trend last week by posting that eye-grabbing image.

The Dubai police force deploys several high-performance cars in tourist areas in part for promotional purposes. If the Dubai police force does indeed incorporate the new Tesla Cybertruck—whenever that is—the EV will join the fleet of supercars that includes models like the Aston Martin One-77, Nissan GT-R, Pagani Huayra, Ferrari LaFerrari, Rolls-Royce Wraith, and BMW i8. According to a recent press release sent out by the Dubai police force, the most recent car to join its fleet was the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S. Powered by a V8 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol motor, the GT 63 S can do 0-100 in 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 315 kilometres per hour.

Currently available for pre-order, the Tesla Cybertruck is an electric pickup truck with up to three motors on board. The top-of-the-line tri-motor all-wheel-drive variant costs $69,900 (Rs 50.17 lakh approx). It has a driving range of over 800 kilometres and can do 0-100 kilometres per hour in under 2.9 seconds. According to Tesla, the Cybertruck can supply power to power tools without needing a portable generator. It also packs an air compressor for pneumatic tools. Optional cabin features include bulletproofed doors and windows along with complete cabin pressurisation for amphibious use.

You can now talk to your Android TV in Hindi

You can now talk to your Android TV in Hindi and Vietnamese. The update comes only to TVs running on Android TV and not TVs from third parties that support the Google Assistant. So if you have an LG TV running on WebOS with support for the Google Assistant or a Samsung TV running on Tizen with support for the Assistant, then you will not be able to talk to the assistant in Hindi on those TVs. Google’s support page reads, “On Android TVs, the Google Assistant is available in English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish, and Vietnamese. More languages are coming soon. On TVs that don't run the Android TV operating system, available languages vary. On LG TVs, the Google Assistant is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish. On all other TVs, the Google Assistant is only available in English.” If you don't have access to Hindi on your Android TV, then worry not as the manufacturer of the TV may be pushing out the update in phases.

The Google Assistant on Smart TVs has evolved considerably since its inception. If you have smart home appliances that work with the Google Assistant, then you can control them from the comfort of the TV. A TV like the Sony A9G (read our review here) can be switched on and off from standby mode by simply using your voice, giving you a more hands-free experience with the TV. A TV like the LG C9 (read our review here) that runs on WebOS supports both the Google Assistant and Alexa along with compatible IoT devices.

When going to purchase a smart TV, you should know that not all TVs running on Android are running on the Android TV platform. Most budget TVs run on AOSP (Android Open Source Platform). AOSP essentially gives users a mobile Android experience including apps and streaming services and most of the time is a cumbersome experience. Companies like Panasonic, Philips and more have TVs running on their own OS.

The Indian government has finally admitted that Chandrayaan-2 has crash landed on the moon

The Chandrayaan-2 moon lander was India’s second attempt at sending a lunar craft to the moon. The mission was touted as to be a major step in India’s space faring goals. But, just a few days ago, the Indian government finally admitted that the lander crashed just 500 meters from its intended target. On September 6, ISRO lost contact with Chadrayaan-2 and it has now been revealed that the lander crashed because of a problem with its braking rockets.

In a statement to the Lok Sabha, the minister of state for the Department of Space has finally admitted that the Vikram lander has ‘hard landed’ on the surface of the moon. He said, “The first phase of descent was performed nominally from an altitude of 30 km to 7.4 km above the moon surface. During the second phase of descent, the reduction in velocity was more than the designed value. Due to this deviation, the initial conditions at the start of the fine braking phase were beyond the designed parameters. As a result, Vikram hard landed within 500 m of the designated landing site”

After losing contact with the lander on September 6, ISRO had said that the lander had been located but communication was not possible. It has taken sometime for the government to admit that the lander had failed was because they were trying to figure out what exactly happened up there. Its not easy to determine what happened to the lander as it was in outer space and diagnosing the issue must have been incredibly difficult.

Even though Chandrayaan-2 was ultimately unsuccessful in its endeavor, it needs to be said that the task of space travel is not an easy one and that even this failure will give ISRO the necessary data to make sure that it never happens again.

Samsung to be sole supplier for 2020 Apple iPhone OLED display

Ever since Apple started using OLED panels on their iPhones, the models have consistently been winning accolades as some of the best smartphone displays in the market. Currently, Apple sources their OLED panels from Samsung, LG and BOE, in-line with the company’s goals of never relying on a sole supplier. This, it seems, is about to change as Samsung is rumoured to be the sole supplier of OLED panels for the 2020 iPhones. The report comes via ETNews that Samsung will be the sole supplier for the OLED as Apple switches to the Y-OCTA OLED panel for their next series of iPhones. Currently, Samsung is the only company capable of mass-producing the Y-OCTA OLED panel.

The fundamental difference between the current OLED panels Apple uses and the new Y-OCTA OLED is the way the touch-sensitive layer is handled. In the current panel, the touch sensor panel is one of the eight layers that comprise an OLED panel assembly. Y-OCTA instead moves the TSP into the main OLED substrate, allowing for some notable advantages. Moving from an on-cell touch-sensitive layer to on that is in-cell, makes the panel thinner, although the number of layers remains the same. Secondly, by moving the touch-sensitive bits below the polarizer film, it improves overall visibility and touch response as well.

While Apple may be switching to the new Y-OCTA OLED panel for their 2020 iPhones, Samsung has been using the pane on their flagship Note series since the Galaxy Note7. So we don’t expect Apple using the Y-OCTA OLED panel for next year’s iPhones to bring something dramatically different with respect to display features or performance.

Amazons Alexa can now express more emotions

Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant will now be able to offer an even more natural voice experience. In a post on its blog, Amazon noted that developers will now be able to set Alexa to respond with either a happy, excited, disappointed or empathetic tone. As such, developers can now make Alexa respond in a manner that is more natural and contextual.

Amazon’s Catherine Gao writes in the post, “you can have Alexa respond in a happy/excited tone when a customer answers a trivia question correctly or wins a game. Similarly, you can have Alexa respond in a disappointed/empathetic tone when a customer asks for the sports score and their favorite team has lost. Early customer feedback indicates that overall satisfaction with the voice experience increased by 30% when Alexa responded with emotions.”

The new speaking styles make use of Neural Text-to-Speech (NTTS) technology. The company notes that the developers can enable two different speaking styles in the US, namely news and music. In Australia, developers will be able to enable an Australia-specific news speaking style. Amazon has also given examples of how the new voices would work.

Amazon seems to be on a spree when it comes to launching new Alexa-powered devices. The company recently unveiled the Echo Flex, which is designed to be mounted on a wall. The device is currently available for pre-order for Rs 2,999 and deliveries are scheduled to begin from December 10 onwards. The Echo Flex features a 0.6-inch speaker, but features a 3.5mm audio jack that gives users the option to plug in a more powerful speaker. There is also a single USB Type-A port at the bottom that can be used to charge your phone.

Even though a notification should automatically pop-up for the update on all eligible Asus Zenfone 5Z units, one can head over to their handset’s settings to manually check for the update. As mentioned above, the update is being pushed out in a phased manner, which means it could take some time for it to be available on your phone. There’s also an option to manually download the update and flash it and you can follow the official instructions here. Do note that flashing a ROM on your phone can lead to it getting bricked and rendered unusable. We suggest you don’t go with ahead with the option of flashing your device in case you haven’t done it before.

OneUI 20 beta rolling out to Samsung Galaxy S9 and Note 9 devices

The Galaxy S10 and the Note 10 series were the first to get a taste of Samsung’s upcoming UI based on Android 10. Called OneUI 2.0, the beta versions of the OS have been pushed to users on the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 phones who signed up for it. Now, people using the Galaxy S9 and the Note 9 can also get on the new UI. It’s still in beta, however, so only upgrade if you are okay with a few bugs here and there.

OneUI 2.0 takes right after the refresh interface that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S10. The primary improvements include a cleaner interface, minimised pop-ups, new layout, enhanced dark mode, Focus mode and more.

To join the beta program, you have to download the Samsung Members app from the Galaxy Store or the Play Store. Provide your credentials and once signed up, you can head to Settings and then to Software Update to check if you received the beta update. Once that’s in, select the Download and Install option to get on the OneUI 2.0.

The update size of the Galaxy Note 9 is around 1.93GB while the S9 will receive a 1.81GB update file. Both of them include the November 2019 security patch. The rollout plans for the stable update have not been announced yet by Samsung, but if the beta rollout goes well enough, Samsung will be pushing out the stable update in the next few weeks.

Motorola One Hyper with a 32MP pop-up selfie camera to launch on December 3

Motorola has teased a smartphone launch event for December 3 in Brazil. The teaser image shows a smartphone with a pop-up camera. There is only one smartphone from Motorola rumoured to house a pop-up selfie camera - the Moto One Hyper. Earlier reports of the smartphone hint at a 6.39-inch IPS LCD display with a Full HD+ resolution. Under the hood, the device is speculated to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 Chipset. The selfie camera, which will be housed in a pop-up mechanism, similar to what we’ve seen on The OnePlus 7 Pro, will house a 32MP selfie camera. The rear of the device is expected to have a 64MP camera accompanied by an 8MP depth sensor. It could also sport 128GB built-in storage. The only piece of information missing is the pricing and colour options. There is also no information on whether the device will make its way to India.

Speaking of Motorola, the company showcased its foldable phone called the Razr, and just like the timeless slim smartphone, the new Razr is full of nostalgia. It brings back the classic flip design that made the original Razr so popular. Not to mention that Shahrukh Khan used the original Moto Razr in the remake of Don, making the smartphone all the more desirable. The 2019 foldable Moto Razr has a price tag of $1500 in the US which translates to roughly Rs 1.10 lakhs.

Coming to the specs of the new foldable Razr, the smartphone has a 6.3-inches foldable display with a resolution of 2142 x 876 pixels. The display is P-OLED with a 21:9 aspect ratio. When folded the smartphone has a 2.7-inch display with a 600x800 pixel resolution. Under the hood, it has the Snapdragon 710 SoC coupled with 6GB RAM and 128GB built-in storage. A 2510mAh battery with 15W TurboPower fast-charging support powers the entire package.

Called the Rs 1,999 prepaid plan, it comes with a validity of 365 days. During this period, the subscriber will enjoy 250 minutes of calling time and 3GB of data daily.

It’s worth noting that the 250 minutes of daily calling minutes on the Rs 1,999 prepaid plan is valid even on calls made to Mumbai and New Delhi numbers, making the plan an even more attractive option for loyal BSNL prepaid patrons. When the Rs 1,999 prepaid plan is active, the user will get to use 3GB of data every day at full speed. However, if they exhaust the data cap within a day’s time, their internet speed will be reduced to 80kbps until the cap is reset again at midnight.

In addition, subscribers of the Rs 1,999 prepaid plan get access to BSNL’s library of PRBT (personalised ring-back tone) with unlimited track changes. They also enjoy a free one-year subscription to SonyLIV’s range of video-on-demand entertainment channels. TelecomTalk points out in its report that there are other recently introduced BSNL prepaid plans as well. For example, users in Chennai can subscribe to the Rs 97 prepaid plan, which offers 250 minutes of calling time and 2GB of data daily for 18 days.

Another TelecomTalk report from earlier in the year says that BSNL recently installed 54,000 towers between 2018 and 2019 to improve its 4G network coverage, “which is more than what BSNL had deployed in the past three years combined”. BSNL’s recently introduced Rs 1,098 prepaid plan comes with unlimited calling and data for 84 days. It also offers 100 free SMS messages per day. You can read more about that plan here.

Samsung may drop Qualcomms Ultrasonic Fingerprint technology

The next generation of Samsung smartphones may not feature Qualcomm’s Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensors. According to a report by the Korea Times, the move may be in response to growing security concerns regarding the sensors and the publication quotes an analyst who suggests that the South Korean manufacturer may abandon the tech for its future devices.

“Samsung Electronics applied the ultrasonic fingerprint scanners to its new smartphones despite lingering security concerns," a source told the publication, “The latest security issue involving the new technology could cause other smartphone manufacturers to hesitate to adopt it.”

The optical fingerprint sensor used by phones like the OnePlus 7 creates a 2D map of the fingerprint, which is then used to authenticate the user. Qualcomm’s Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor creates a 3D map to authenticate the user.

This report comes just a few weeks after it was reported that certain banks were blacklisting Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 phones from either downloading their official apps, or using biometric authentication. Back in April this year, a video surfaced that showed the Galaxy S10 being fooled by a 3D printed fingerprint pattern. To create the 3D map, the user claimed to have taken a photograph of his fingerprint from a wine glass with a smartphone, and then used  software to calculate the depth information. The data was then used to 3D print the fingerprint pattern on a transparent strip.

Samsung has filed a patent for a clamshell foldable tablet

After the release of the Samsung Galaxy Fold earlier this year, Samsung have been looking at how they can implement foldable screens into its other products. Just recently, Samsung had patent listing from the European Union Intellectual Property Office that reveals that the Korean tech giant is looking at releasing a Tablet that comes with a flexible screen. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, this device could feature a clamshell design as opposed to a horizontal fold.

First reported by LetsGoDigital, the Galaxy foldable Tab will be slightly larger than the Galaxy Fold. It’s not surprising that Samsung have decided to move forward with foldable devices since this seems to be the coming trend. Both Huawei and Motorola have already thrown their hats into the foldable phone market. Surprisingly, the Samsung folding tab resembles a Motorola Razr more than the Samsung Fold. A deeper look at the patent shows a full body screen on the front. This could mean that Samsung could be implementing an in-display camera on the display itself.

It looks like Samsung are going full steam ahead with this concept and why not? A smaller tablet could only mean good things. You’ll save space and add another layer of portability to the device. A tablet that fits in your pocket? Samsung seems to think so. As of now, the device is still just an idea. All we can confirm is that the Korean tech giant has filed for a patent for this particular foldable device in the European Union Intellectual Property Office and the World Intellectual Office database.

Apple plans on shipping the Made in India iPhone XR to international markets

While Apple has been manufacturing smartphones in India for a couple of years now, the latest development has been the manufacturing of the iPhone XR in India as well. When the “Made in India” iPhone XR began selling in stores, the phone also saw a price drop to accompany it. The newest update in the production cycle is that the Made in India iPhone XR will now be shipped to countries outside of India as well.

The news comes from India’s I.T. Minister, Pandit Ravi Prasad. He also said that Salcomp, a major supplier of chargers to Apple for the iPhone, will be reviving the now-defunct Nokia manufacturing facility. Closed more than 10 years ago, the Nokia plant used to at one point be the biggest manufacturing facility of its kind in India. Salcomp will be taking over the facility and beginning production of charges and other equipment. “The big SEZ of Nokia which was closed for 10 years will get into life again. As many as 10,000 people will get jobs directly and 50,000 jobs will be generated indirectly,” Prasad said.

The current Indian Government had instituted a Phased Manufacturing Programme, a 5-year plan to significantly boost the manufacturing of smartphones and their associated sub-components in India. Right now, most smartphone companies that boast of “made in India” smartphones, are only assembling them here. The companies usually import most of the parts from China, assembling the devices here in their factories. This is one of the key reasons why device prices wont see a significant drop, since here is still a tax being levied on the import of these components. Additionally, given the rough trade relations between American and China, India stands to notably benefit as American corporations try and avoid the taxation they would be hit with for continued manufacturing in China.

WhatsApp reportedly testing Snapchat like self-destructing messages, Facebook app spotted running dark mode

It seems like Facebook is readying some new features for its Android app, and the popular online messaging platform WhatsApp. As per a new WABetainfo report, WhatsApp developers are now testing self-deleting messages on the platform that was previously called Disappearing Messages. Now renamed simply to Delete Messages, we have already seen a similar feature on Snapchat and Telegram. In a separate report, some on Twitter posted screenshots of the Facebook app with a dark theme. It seems like the social media platform is finally testing dark mode for the Facebook app. However, the test might be happening with a limited batch of users.

The Delete Messages option is apparently available in Contact Info or Group Settings and can only be enabled by group admins. However, updating to the latest WhatsApp beta version doesn’t enable the option, since it is said to be currently under development. The feature is said to enable users to select how long their sent message will be available before being deleted. Currently, the time periods for the delayed deletion of messages include one hour, one day, one week, one month, and one year. Since the feature is still in testing, it could be changed.

Coming to the dark mode sighting on the Facebook app, Jane Manchun Wong, á¹he well-known reverse engineer, first spotted the option. Initially reported back in August this year, the dark mode option was said to be in an early stage of development and only certain areas of the app were painted black. The new screenshots posted by some Twitter users suggest that the dark mode development has progressed quite a bit. It remains to be known when the option will be rolled out for standard users.

Speaking of dark mode, WhatsApp is also testing the dark scheme on its app. The option is available for beta users right now and is expected to soon roll out for all users.

Samsung Galaxy S11+ leaked renders surface, revealing five cameras at the back, Infinity-O display and more

The Samsung Galaxy S11+ is real. As always, Samsung will be launching a plus variant of the S11 flagship next year along with the Galaxy S11 and the S11e, and renders for the larger flagship have just surfaced online. The renders reveal the S11+ will move to the Infinity-O display of the Note10+ and sport the rectangular camera module leaked in previous renders of the Galaxy S11 series. Only, the S11+ will likely come with five cameras at the back.

The renders, courtesy OnLeaks and CashKaro, reveal a metal build measuring 166.9x76x8.8mm. If this is indeed true, the S11+ will be larger and thicker than the S10+. The camera bump at the back brings the thickness to 10.2mm. The rectangular module houses five sensors along with laser autofocus and a flash. Two of the sensors are smaller than the other three.

On the front, the S11+ will stick to the curved display. Previous leaks suggests the display will be as large as 6.9-inches while the panel itself will be Samsung’s own Dynamic AMOLED display. It’s rumoured Samsung will infuse 120Hz refresh rate in the display and an in-display fingerprint sensor like last time.

Aside from that, Samsung is also rumoured to introduce 108MP cameras to the lineup. Another sensor will likely allow the phone to zoom to 5x optical. As for video, the S11+ can reportedly shoot 8K videos.

The renders also reveal the Galaxy S11+ will have a single punch-hole camera instead of the dual-camera stack in the S10+. At the bottom, there is a USB-C port and the speaker grill. The primary microphone is also visible and we’re guessing there will be another one on top.

The Galaxy S11+ was also recently spotted on Geekbench running on the Samsung Exynos 9830 SoC along with 12GB RAM.

Samsung will likely launch the Galaxy S11 series in three different sizes and five different variants since the regular S11 is also likely to get a 5G variant. The phones are also supposed to get 25W fast charging while the S11+ will likely get 45W fast charging like the Galaxy Note 10+.

The phones will reportedly launch in the third week of February. Last year, Samsung announced the S10 and the Galaxy Fold at an Unpacked event in San Francisco. It’s likely to be the same, next year as well.

Vodafone-Idea and Airtel might face more difficulties as committee for telecom relief package reportedly disbanded

Considering the current state of the telecom industry, saying that the top telecom operators Vodafone-Idea and Airtel are in a pickle wouldn’t be incorrect. The two operators need to pay over Rs 89,000 crore in combined AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue) dues to the government and it seems like the scenario is going to get even more difficult. ET apparently had a conversation with a “a top government official” who says that the (CoS) Committee of Secretaries that was formed to help the telcos with some relief measures is now disbanded. If the report can be believed, it means even tougher times could be in store for the telcos.

The government official also reveals that the telcos have received a two-year moratorium for spectrum payment dues, along with a relief of Rs 42,000 crores. However, the report mentions that the telco should not expect anything more than this. It is unclear if a new committee will be formed to help the telcos with their struggling dues and provide relief for the still remaining Rs 1.47 lakh crore adjusted gross revenues but the official said this won’t be happening since it is an “SC-defined matter.” This report comes after the government decided not to reduce the 8 percent AGR telcos need to pay license fees. Telecom carriers have less than three months to clear their dues.

The mounting due for telecom operators due to AGR is apparently making things too difficult in times of cutthroat competition. One of the leading telcos has also expressed concerns over continuing its operations in the country if some relief is not provided.  Rajan Mathews, director-general of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) reportedly says, “We trust this does not mean the government has ceased to look at the long-term relief and sustainability of the industry. We hope these issues will continue to be looked at and decided upon by DoT through existing channels of decision making.

There's also a report stating 5G deployment in India might be pushed by five years. You can read the full report here.

Twitter plans on shutting down accounts that have been inactive for 6 months

Lurkers and stalkers beware as Twitter is planning on removing accounts that haven’t signed in for six months or more. So, if you have not been using the social media application, you’ll relinquish the right to your username to someone else. Don’t be surprised to see someone else with your username posting on Twitter. From what we know, the plan will start taking effect on December 11 but a Twitter spokesperson has said that the closing of these accounts will take place over a period of months. Don’t expect to have thousands of new usernames available on December 12. Just know that you don’t have to post to retain your account, just make sure you log in, once in a while.

Twitter is taking this step in an effort to clean up the social media platform. They want to present more accurate, credible information that is rather reliable. This essentially means that it’ll be easier for users to find exactly the accounts they’re looking for. It also makes it much harder for porn accounts and more to hijack your accounts for spam. If you missed out on your username of choice, back in the day, there is a chance that you may be able to grab the coveted username of your choice.

This could pose a problem for a few people, though. For users who’ve not been able to access their accounts because of medical reasons and such, there is no real plan as of yet, but we can be sure that Twitter has something up its sleeve. Twitter has also said that it will find a way to memorialise accounts of people who have died but didn’t really say anything beyond that.

Tesla Cybertruck pre-orders cross 2,50,000 within a week after unveiling

The Cybertruck is arguably Tesla’s maddest EV yet, in terms of how it looks and what it can do. Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the Cybertruck at an event in Los Angeles, California late last week with a great deal of enthusiasm. And while some of that enthusiasm may have been blunted by the Tesla Armor Glass mishap, the Cybertruck has managed to get away with some impressive initial sales numbers. According to a recent tweet by Musk, the Cybertruck has received over 2,50,000 pre-orders online.

Since its global unveiling on November 22, the Tesla Cybertruck has been available for pre-order in selected regions across the globe, including Canada, Australia, France, Hong Kong, the UK, and the US. In its home country of the US, the Cybertruck can be bought in three different variants starting at $39,900 (Rs 28.61 lakh approx). Interested customers will have to put down a fully refundable sum of $100 (Rs 7,130 approx) to place their order. Deliveries of the Tesla Cybertruck will start in late 2021.

According to Musk’s tweets, pre-orders for the Tesla Cybertruck crossed 1,46,000 just a couple of days after its unveiling, with 42 per cent of the customers going for the dual-motor variant, 41 per cent choosing the tri-motor variant, and 17 per cent picking the single-motor variant. Musk later said in his tweet that that number was achieved with zero advertising and absolutely no paid endorsements. By Monday, pre-orders for the electric pickup truck crossed 1,87,000. And as of two hours ago, the Cybertruck has over 2,50,000 pre-orders.

According to Tesla, the top-end variant of the Cybertruck with triple motors can tow up to 6 tonnes of weight. The company recently demonstrated the EV’s maximum torque in a Twitter video in which the Cybertruck is seen pulling a high-revving Ford F-150 uphill. The triple-motor variant comes with a total range of 800 kilometres and can do 0-100 kilometres per hour in under 2.9 seconds. Tesla is selling all three variants with an optional self-driving package for $7000 (Rs 5 lakh approx). You can read more about the Tesla Cybertruck’s unveiling here.
