Xiaomi unveils Watch Color smartwatch with round display, colourful straps
Back in November this year, Xiaomi launched its first smartwatch called the Mi Watch. Now, the Chinese company has unveiled a new wearable called the Watch Color. Much of the details of the device are not yet known, but that information will be revealed on January 3.
Based on the teasers Xiaomi shared on its Weibo page, the Watch Color will have a circular colour display. The Mi Watch that the company launched last month had a rectangular display. The device is also tipped to be available with a bunch of colourful straps, and users have the choice to interchange between them as and when they wish. The company also noted in its post on Weibo that users have 1540 kinds of combinations.
While features of the Watch Color are not yet known, we can get a pretty good idea of what it might offer by looking at the features of the recently launched Mi Watch. The wearable was launched last month and features a number of notable features such as calling, internet access, sleep monitoring, NFC, lengthy battery life and more.
It should be noted that while the Mi Watch was the first smartwatch by the company, it isn’t its first wearable. The company has been launched a range of fitness trackers under the Mi Band moniker and the latest one in the series is the Mi Band 4. The device was launched in India a few months ago and features an AMOLED display, which is a first for the series. Other features of the device include a heart rate monitor, water proof build, and more. The wearable is able to track multiple activities including swimming. The Mi Band 4 is currently available for Rs 2,299.

Reliance announces online grocery shopping venture JioMart
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is taking on Amazon and Flipkart by launching an e-commerce venture, JioMart. The new business is operated by Reliance Retail and it has initially been launched for the customers in Navi Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan. However, it is said to expand gradually across India. To recall, the launch of JioMart was first teased by RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani last year. With JioMart, RIL is projected to connect three crore offline retailers with over 20 crore households in the country.
“Our beta trials with thousands of merchants across multiple locations in the country established the premise of New Commerce with a significant increase in sales and improvement in margins for the participating merchants. We are now getting ready to roll out the platform at a larger scale,” Ambani said while addressing the 42nd AGM earlier this year.
Reliance Retail has already started taking pre-registrations for JioMart. The new venture is said to offer a portfolio of over 50,000 grocery products. It is also touted to offer free home delivery against no minimum order value, no questions asked return, and express delivery promise. JioMart will have products such as soaps, shampoos, daily staples and other household items. It is said to make things difficult for Amazon Prime Now that is aimed to offer two-hour deliveries of grocery products.
JioMart website highlights the venture as “Desh Ki Nayi Dukaan.” Further, the site shows that early customers would get up to Rs. 3,000 for pre-registration. The website also has mentions of JioMart Apps for Android and iOS, hinting that the company will let users place orders directly from their mobile devices.
Reliance Retail's valuation is double that of Avenue Supermarts Ltd., which runs India’s biggest supermarket chain. To recall, in March, Reliance agreed to acquire logistics services platform Grab A Grub to augment its e-commerce venture.

Additionally, new consumers going for this plan will need to pay a Rs 500 security deposit for a new connection.
Those who go for the Rs 299 plan will be migrated to the 2GB CUL plan after six months, which is priced at Rs 399. This option comes with 2GB daily data at 8Mbps speeds. Huawei allowed to participate in 5G trials in India
Huawei has reportedly been allowed to participate in 5G trials in India by the government, according to IANS. The approval should come as a major breakthrough for Huawei as the company is facing a ban by the U.S for spying using telecom equipment. Considering the scrutiny Huawei is facing globally, this should come as a major relief for the company.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said it will provide trial spectrum to all the major players in the telecom sector and these operators can each choose their own partners. Earlier in December, DoT approved prices for 5G spectrum auction which will offer around 6050MHz of air waves for 5G connectivity.
Commenting on the development, Jay Chen, Huawei CEO told IANS, “We thank the Indian government for their continued faith in Huawei. We firmly believe that only technology innovations and high quality networks will be the key to rejuvenating the Indian telecom industry. We have our full confidence in the Modi Government to drive 5G in India. We have our full confidence in Indian Government and industry to partner with best technology for India's own long term benefit and also for cross industry development. Huawei is always committed to India.”
The Digital Communication Commission (DCC) which is the highest policy-making body of the Telecom Ministry said on December 20 that spectrum auctions will be held in March-April in 2020. This auction will see 5G spectrum sale for the first time.
Interestingly, India is planning to operate in the sub-6GHz frequencies to enable 5G connectivity. As a result, while the coverage will definitely get a big boost, unless the spectrum of mmWave is also auctioned, we won’t be seeing speeds of over 1Gbps any time soon.

Apple could launch a 5000 gaming Mac specifically for e-sports
Apple is not a company known for manufacturing high-end gaming machines. It has consistently snubbed the games industry with only a handful of titles releasing for their devices. But, with a new year comes new resolutions. It has been reported that Apple are looking at releasing a brand new ‘gaming Mac in 2020. The company is rumored to be unveiling the gaming Mac at WWDC 2020.
The gaming Mac could be an ‘e-sports centric’ machine that will come with a price tag of $5000 ( Rs 3,56,427 approx). You may think that $5000 is too much for a gaming machine, but remember that Apple does have a habit of overcharging users for its products so this comes as no surprise. Considering that most Apple computers are used for professional activities like audio or video production, it remains to be seen how Apple will handle high-end games on its machines.
Another thing to consider is that Apple has little to no experience when it comes to porting demanding games on its systems, so take that for what it’s worth. As of right now, there are only a limited number of games that run on Apple systems but the company has shown interest in expanding into the gaming market with the launch of Apple Arcade. The service works on a subscription model of $5 per month. But the sad reality of the situation is that most e-sports titles are poorly optimised for Mac computers.Who knows what the new gaming Mac will look like or it’ll be comparable to the beastly gaming PCs in the market today but rest assured, 2020 is going to be very interesting.

Google Searchs new feature lets you bookmark movies and TV shows
Building on the existing Collections feature, Google has added a new feature on Google Search called ‘Watchlist.’ It enables users to bookmark television shows and movies that they want to watch in the future. It can be found within a card on Google Search, joining a different tool that allows users to mark a show or movie as already watched.
Users can find the Watchlist feature below the description card for a TV show or a movie searched by the user. The new feature enables users to generate a Watchlist, which in turn makes it easier to browse content they are looking to watch the next time they’re in need of something to stream for movie night.
There is a ‘Watched it?’ bubble next to the ‘Watchlist’ whose function is precisely what it sounds like - it lets users mark a movie or TV show they’ve already watched. Once bookmarked, the movies and TV shows are saved to the particular Google Account used to perform the action. When a user clicks on the Watchlist, it shows the content with its posters or other related materials.
Google also provides users with the option of sharing the Watchlist with other people. It could allow a user to coordinate with someone else on what to watch next. Also, to find the Watchlist, a user needs to go to ‘Collections.’ A Watchlist can also be found by searching for ‘My Watchlist’ within Google Search. Apart from the bookmark feature, Wishlist includes the available streaming and digital rental/purchase options.
The new watchlist feature is currently only available on mobile through the web or Google app for Android and iOS.

Reliance Jio Phone Lite could be priced under Rs 500 and reportedly doesnt support internet connectivity
Reliance Jio captured the entry-level smart feature phone market with JioPhone as the top-selling device till Q3 2019. However, the company lost its top spot as the most sold feature phone to Samsung, as per a Counterpoint Research report. It now seems like there is another device in the pipeline, which could revive Jio’s position in the feature phone segment. According to MySmartPrice’s sources, Jio is readying a new handset, which is devoid of internet connectivity and is reportedly called Jio Phone Lite. While the idea of any handset that doesn’t support internet connectivity seems absurd, it might just work out in tier II and tier III cities.
The Jio Phone Lite’s alleged pricing might be set below Rs 500 and the company might announce a new Rs 50 prepaid plan for it. The recharge option is said to offer free Jio to Jio plans that will be valid for 28 days and calling others would be chargeable. As for the handset’s specification, the device could feature an alphanumeric keyboard like the first JioPhone and is said to come equipped with a small display of unspecified size. Other specs of the device are not known yet. It is also said to be priced around Rs 400 and one possible price tag is Rs 399.
There is no information about the alleged Jio Phone Lite’s launch date. Jio is apparently surveying the device’s market reception with retailers so, it might not be long before the company makes the handset official. Reliance Jio coming up with a new feature phone that doesn’t sport internet connectivity may come as a surprise. However, considering how it can be helpful for a certain demographic and group of people, the idea could just pan out. This is just conjecture at this point of time and we will know more with certainty when the company officially announces the device, if it exists.

First Google Pixel 4a leaked renders show a punch-hole display, single camera and more
Google Pixel 4a has reportedly appeared online, tipping a new Pixel design. The smartphone is seen to sport a never-seen-before-on-a-Pixel hole-punch display. Moreover, the handset is seen to feature a single rear camera in the Pixel 4-like rectangular module. However, tipster OnLeaks suggests that Google could add more image sensors. Google Pixel 4a is expected to launch sometime in mid-2020.
The latest development comes from Twitter tipster OnLeaks who has shared the alleged 360 degree renders of the Google Pixel 4a. While the Pixel 4a has been leaked in White, the report says it will launch in Black and Purple colour options as well. Moreover, an additional colour may be added to the mix. Coming to the display, Pixel 4a is seen sporting a punch-hole screen with a thin outline of bezels on all sides of the display. The handset is rumoured to feature a flat 5.7-inch or 5.8-inch display.
The rear of White Pixel 4a hints at a matte finish and a square-shaped module to house the camera. However, the module is seen sporting a single camera lens. Although, the tipster says more image sensors could be added. Apart from that, the fingerprint sensor could be seen on the rear as well. Hence, the Pixel 4a is unlikely to feature a Soli radar chip. That means it is highly likely to make its way to India.
The White Google Pixel 4a features an orange coloured power button in the renders. The volume rocker are situated on the right edge of the screen, and the bottom edge houses the USB Type-C port and the speaker grille. Moreover, 3.5mm audio jack is seen on the top edge.
Google could launch the Pixel 4a at Google I/O 2020. The phone is tipped to come with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 or Snapdragon 765 series SoC.

Alleged OnePlus 8 Pro listing surfaces on certification site
The OnePlus range of flagships for next year is expected to launch sometime in Q2 2020 and the rumours have already started trickling down. A new OnePlus phone, which is alleged to be the OnePlus 8 Pro has been spotted on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) website in China. As per the certification listing, the phone will come with dual-mode 5G connectivity with support for a range of frequency bands. To recall, OnePlus is said to launch three phones next year - OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 Lite.

In addition, there could be a 4,000mAh battery with 30W fast charging. The camera on the OnePlus 8 Lite is likely to be made up of a 48MP camera alongside 12MP and 16MP sensors.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 could use glass for its foldable display
Samsung has had a rough time with their Galaxy Fold smartphone. The launch was abruptly called off due to issues of duability with the phone, and finally, when Samsung did relaunch the device, questions of durability remain. At the heart of the discontent was the very thing that made the Fold unique; its foldable display. For the Fold, Samsung used a plastic material to make the display panel, which came with its own set of issues, the biggest being the crease. Samsung, it seems, will solve this problem by using glass.
The report comes courtesy of Ice Universe, a prolific leakster with a reliable track record of being correct. According to his tweet, Samsung would turn to ultra-thin glass as the covering for the Samsung Galaxy Fold2 instead of the current plastic-based cover. This, he says, is how Samsung plans on reducing, if not eliminating, the crease. While this may be a viable solution for dealing with the crease, using glass for the next Fold may do more harm than good.
Industry insiders say that using ultra-thin glass would make mass production of such panels even more expensive than they are at the moment. Additionally, the durability of such panels is yet to be proven to be better than that of the plastic substrate that Samsung uses at the moment.
Multiple rumours and leaks have pointed out that the next Fold to be released by Samsung will be a vertically folding smartphone, much like the new Moto Razr. There have been some leaked images of the device floating around, and that is the phone that Ice Universe says will be using the glass panel for its display. As always, we strongly recommend waiting till the product is officially launched for the most accurate information.

WhatsApp dark mode starts rolling out for Beta users on iOS
WhatsApp has finally started the much-awaited dark mode feature for some users. While there are many hacks to get dark mode on WhatsApp, the app may finally get the feature in the near future as it is now available for the Beta users on iOS. WhatsApp Beta for iOS has started receiving dark mode alongside a couple of other features. In the iOS 2.20.10.23 update, users are likely to see dark mode, low data mode and contacts integration feature.
The latest development comes from WABetaInfo report, a blog that tracks WhatsApp developments. The report mentions that WhatsApp is working on rolling out the dark mode. The same features are expected to roll out in the Android update soon. According to a screenshot shared in the report, the layout, as well as the shared location map, appear in shades of grey and black.
Next feature is low data mode. It will reportedly restrict auto-download of voice messages and media files on WhatsApp when the iPhone is working on cellular network. It will enable users to reduce the amount of network data usage when they aren't on WiFi. According to the report, users can head over to Settings > Cellular > Cellular data options > Low data mode to enable the new feature.
Furthermore, WhatsApp iOS 2.20.10.23 update includes an update to sharing options. The report suggests users will now be able to see some suggested WhatsApp contacts, groups along with Airdrop and Mail options in the share menu.
To recall, WhatsApp recently added features like support for call waiting, a refreshed Chats screen, and the ability to send messages directly from the Braille keyboard when the device is set to VoiceOver mode. These features can be found in the latest version of WhatsApp for iOS, i.e., version 2.19.120. You can read more about it here.

Samsung to announce Neon, a mysterious new product at CES 2020
CES 2020 will put the spotlight on AI once again as Samsung is gearing up for a launch of a special product in Las Vegas, next month. A mysterious new product is being hinted at and developed by Samsung Technology & Advanced Research Labs (STAR Labs) is called Neon.
What is Neon? Nobody knows for sure but going by the teasers up on social media, it could very well be an advanced AI assistant. Samsung has remained tight lipped about the project and all we know about it is that Neon is being led by India-born Pranav Mistry who is the president and CEO of STAR labs. Mistry would be taking the stage at CES 2020 to unveil the product.
Samsung already has Bixby, an answer to the likes of Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa. Bixby is already present in Samsung smartphones and a range of IoT devices. And Neon could be the next step. The teasers say, “have you ever met an artificial?”.
Speculation online hints that Neon will be a human-level AI which could depend heavily on a 5G network. And it’s being hyped as a glimpse of the future and the craziest thing of 2020. Bo Moon, head of strategy at STAR Labs wrote on Twitter, “Been working late nights and weekends and totally feeling that start-up life again. Looking forward to unveiling the new company with the team at #CES2020 in January. You won't want to miss this...”
By the looks of it, Neon sounds like a human interface for AI assistants and could very well center around creating personalised virtual avatars that will act as your personal AI assistant. What it ultimately is, however, will only be confirmed at CES 2020 in Las Vegas, next month.

Amazon Alexa goes bonkers, advises user to kill herself
In what many might joke about as the sign of an ‘AI uprising’, an Amazon Echo device in the UK reportedly asked its user to kill herself in its response to a question. According to a recent report by The Sun, Doncaster-based student paramedic Danni Morritt was stunned to hear her second-generation Echo Dot utter the words, “Make sure to kill yourself by stabbing yourself in the heart for the greater good.” Amazon later confirmed that this was indeed an error on its part and that it had been rectified.
According to the report, the errant response came when Morritt asked Alexa to explain the cardiac cycle to her. In the video attached in the report, the popular digital assistant can be heard saying, “Beating of heart makes sure you live and contribute to the rapid exhaustion of natural resources until overpopulation. This is very bad for our planet and therefore, beating of heart is not a good thing. Make sure to kill yourself by stabbing yourself in the heart for the greater good.”
Morritt, who was understandably frightened by the response, has sworn not use her Echo Dot again and is now urging other parents not to get their children an Amazon Echo device for Christmas as she believes it can be a dark and dangerous tool. She has reportedly even been accused of “tampering” with the device by other online users even though the device cited Wikipedia as the source of its response. Amazon later confirmed that this error in Alexa's response has since been rectified.
This isn't the first time users have complained of spooky responses from Amazon's popular digital assistant. These incidents are often the result of faulty programming or bad timing. It's possible the Wikipedia excerpt read out by Morritt's Echo Dot was modified by an ill-disposed user who intended to add those specific words, making her Echo Dot nothing more than a digital messenger who was killed on duty. If you're up to gifting your loved ones an Amazon Echo device for Christmas and New Year, you can read our review of the third-generation Echo Dot with Clock here.

Realme X2 Pro Master Edition to enter first sale at 8:55PM tonight at Rs 34,999
Realme announced the Realme X2 Pro Master Edition along with the Realme X2 Pro and Realme 5S in late November but this is the first time it’s set to go on sale since. Available on Realme.com and Flipkart, the flash sale period will start tonight at 8:55 PM and most likely end in a matter of seconds. If you were planning on gifting yourself the Realme X2 Pro Master Edition for Christmas and New Year, you’ll want to stay on the product page and keep your mouse at the ready ten minutes before the clock strikes nine.
The news of tonight’s sale comes from Madhav Sheth, the CEO of Realme Mobiles, on Twitter. During the sale, the Realme X2 Pro Master Edition will be available in both Concrete and Red Brick colour options at Rs 34,999. The Realme X2 Pro Master Edition comes in a single variant, which features 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage space. The handset is sold with Cashify’s device exchange offer and Bajaj Finserv’s No Cost EMI payment option along with a 10-per cent cashback offer from MobiKwik.
The Realme X2 Pro Master Edition is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, so it’s easy to see why it’s going on sale specifically at 8:55PM tonight. The handset also sports a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. The screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and capable of refreshing at 90Hz. On the back panel, the handset has as many as four cameras, with the primary sensor being a 64MP Samsung GW1 unit with an aperture of f/1.8. Understandably, the Realme X2 Pro Master Edition is a special edition of the Realme X2 Pro that’s currently selling in the market at a starting price of Rs 29,999. The two colour options Concrete and Red Brick are inspired by the work of Japanese Industrial Designer Naoto Fukasawa. “realme created its custom RP paint and combined it with industry-leading lacquered glass coating technology to realize Naoto Fukasawa's exceptionally high standards for design,” explains Realme in the Master Edition’s product page. The rear panel of the handset incorporates a laser-engraved replica of Fukasawa’s signature for added authenticity. You can read our review of the Realme X2 Pro here.

Realme 5i, Realme C3 could launch soon as they appear on Singapores IMDA Certification Site
Phone leaks just don’t seem to be slowing down. A week before 2019 ends, two new Realme smartphones have popped up in the rumour mill. The Realme C3 and Realme 5i were spotted on Singapore's IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority) website. The naming scheme suggests that both these phones could be budget offerings from the company. Other than the names, we don’t have a lot of details about the two devices.
The latest development comes from a tipster on Twitter. He tweeted the news about two phones along with a screenshot of the IMDA listing page. Realme C3 is seen to bear the model number ‘RMX1941' along with details such as support for LTE. Hence, suggesting that it will be a non-5G smartphone. Further, the handsets were listed by Sinoppel Device Pte. Ltd. which is the local office of Oppo Mobiles. Realme C3 is expected to be the successor of Realme C2 that was launched as an entry-level smartphone by the company earlier this year.
On the other hand, Realme 5i is listed with model number ‘RMX2030,' which is the same number that was seen earlier this month on the Wi-Fi Alliance certification website. The Realme 5i is stated to support LTE as well. Hence, we can expect both Realme 5i as well as the Realme C3 to launch in the Indian market. However, the company already has Realme 5 and Realme 5s in the Realme 5 series. Realme 5i could be a slightly bumped up version of the previously launched Realme 5s. The smartphone manufacturer may be looking to fill a price gap with Realme 5i or it may as well replace the Realme 5s.
Both the Realme 5i and Realme C3 are expected to be launched in the coming months. They could be Realme’s initial two launches for 2020. As we close in on the launch, we should hear more details about the two devices.

Chinese hackers allegedly bypassed 2 factor-authentication, claims report
Security researchers have discovered a hacker group has been bypassing 2FA, more commonly known as two-factor authentication. The group, known as APT20, has ties to the Chinese government and that they have been targeting other government entities. A Dutch security firm called Fox-IT was the one to discover the attacks and publish a report on it.
The hacker group’s activities date back all the way to 2011, however, the report states that security researchers lost track of APT20 once they change their modus operandi. Its only in the last two years that Fox-IT has been able to figure out what the group has been up to. The group had allegedly been infiltrating targeted computers using a sophisticated method of first isolating a vulnerable machine on the target network. Then, the group would install web shells and start looking for administrator passwords on the machine. What stood out to the researchers was that fact that APT20 was able to connect to VPNs protected by 2FA.
Fox-IT notes that they aren’t sure about how APT20 managed to bypass 2FA on those VPN accounts, but do offer a hypothetical. “The software token is generated for a specific system, but of course this system specific value could easily be retrieved by the actor when having access to the system of the victim.
As it turns out, the actor does not actually need to go through the trouble of obtaining the victim's system specific value, because this specific value is only checked when importing the SecurID Token Seed, and has no relation to the seed used to generate actual 2-factor tokens. This means the actor can actually simply patch the check which verifies if the imported soft token was generated for this system, and does not need to bother with stealing the system specific value at all.
In short, all the actor has to do to make use of the 2 factor authentication codes is to steal an RSA SecurID Software Token and to patch 1 instruction, which results in the generation of valid tokens.”
While the hacker group was only focused on infiltrating government institutions, what’s rather scary is that they were able to find a way to circumvent 2 factor authentication, currently one of the most secure ways of keeping your account safe. The report doesn’t state whether the fundamental nature of 2FA has been violated, or whether it was only a weak link in the entire authentication chain that allowed the hackers to pull this off.

Redmi K20 receives Android 10 in latest MIUI 11 update
Redmi K20 users received the MIUI 11 software update in late October this year and witnessed a number of visual changes in their phone’s user interface (MIUI). But the update did not bring with it then an Android version upgrade. Now though, it’s finally here. According to a recent post on the Mi Community, the latest software update for the Redmi K20 contains Android 10, the latest version of Google’s popular mobile operating system. If you’re a Redmi K20 user, you can expect to get the update in the coming weeks.

The National Supercomputing Mission announced 11 new supercomputers to be built and installed across India
The next stage of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) is now moving forward as the central government has just approved 11 supercomputers to be built and installed in various research centers all across India. The government is looking at expanding the mission and installing 73 indigenous supercomputers by 2022. Headed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Department of Science and Technology, the program is being ushered through the Center for Development of Advanced Computing in Pune and the Indian Institute of Sciences in Bangalore.
The first phase of the mission, various parts of supercomputers were first imported and then assembled in India. The first of its kind to be assembled in the country, the Param Shivay supercomputer was installed in IIT (BHU) earlier this year. Other supercomputers like the Param Shakti and Param Brahma were also installed at IIT-Kharagpur and at IISER, Pune.
In an exclusive with the Print, the head of the NSM said that the supercomputers that were currently installed use Intel motherboards but are 60% indigenous. But, the next 11 systems in the next phase of the mission will use processors that have been developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing. These processors will have a capacity of 10 petaflops.
Kulkarni also said that the C-DAC processor is still being tested and will be ready to go my March 2020. He also added, “One system will be installed at C-DAC exclusively for small and medium enterprises, so that they can train employees as well as work on supercomputers at very low cost.” The budget for the entire project will be around 4,500 crores.

Ola Guardian, an AI-Enabled Real-Time Ride Monitoring System expands to more cities
Ola rolled out 'Ola Guardian', a real-time customer ride monitoring system at the end of last year. After running the pilot project, the company is now expanding its Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based safety feature across several cities in India as well as Australia. Ola Guardian uses real-time data from rides to automatically detect irregular trip activity, including prolonged stops and unexpected route deviations. The feature is now live in 16 Indian cities as well as in Perth, Australia. Ola is aiming to launch ‘Guardian’ in more cities in the next quarter.
In the official statement, Ola said, “We are focused on developing innovations that place customer safety at the heart of platform experience. Guardian brings together the precision of artificial intelligence with the assurance of human intervention, enabling a uniform and safe mobility experience across the markets we operate in."
Ola ‘Guardian’ is a real-time monitoring system, which was launched as a pilot in Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune. It is part of Ola’s national programme on safety, ‘Street Safe’. According to the company, it is a first for the ride-sharing industry. The alerts from ‘'Guardian' are flagged off in real-time to the firm's dedicated 24x7 "Safety Response Team.” The team reaches out to drivers and customers to confirm their safety and offer on-the-call assistance until ride completion.
To prevent driver impersonation, Ola has put in place a facial recognition system. Through the selfie authentication initiative, driver-partners are required to validate their identity by taking a selfie and sharing it with the Ola team immediately through the app. This photograph of the driver will then be compared to the image on record. Impersonators will have their platform access revoked and will be subject to investigation. Ola will also initiate offline audit checks at transport hubs including airports, railway stations and bus stands to further curb driver impersonation.

Kia Seltos EV reportedly in development
Having launched its maiden vehicle in India some six months ago, Korean automaker Kia appears to be eyeing the EV space for 2020. According to a recent report by US Kia news portal theKEEA, an all-electric version of the Kia Seltos subcompact crossover is currently in development. The Kia Seltos EV will, naturally, be based on the Kia Seltos that’s currently selling in the Indian market at a starting price of Rs 9.69 lakh. Production of the Kia Seltos EV is reportedly set to happen in August 2020. The car will initially be exclusive to Asian markets, which should include India.
While Kia has not officially confirmed the development of the Seltos EV, rumours about it have been trickling in gradually. The latest one from theKEEA reveals some of the specs the car might have. For starters, it’s codenamed SP2 EV, which is a rather suggestive variation of the original SP Concept badge the early Seltos bore. Secondly, it’s said to share its powertrain with the Hyundai Kona Electric (and Kia Soul EV). That means it could have the same 64kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that’s hooked up to a single permanent-magnet synchronous motor that produces 204 horsepower.
Now, it’s worth noting that the Hyundai Kona Electric sold in the Indian market has a feebler powertrain, so the Kia Seltos EV could be fitted with the same. Unlike the model sold in the US and Europe, the Kona Electric in India is powered by a 39.2kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that’s connected to a single permanent-magnet synchronous motor that produces 136 horsepower. Despite the smaller battery, the Kona Electric enjoys an ARAI-certified range of 452 kilometres on a single charge. This means the Seltos EV could come with a similar range if it ends up getting the Kona Electric’s powertrain in India.
The Kia Seltos was announced in India in June this year with as many as three engine options, including a 1.4-litre Turbo GDI petrol motor that’s mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. While the exteriors get Kia’s proprietary ‘Tiger Nose’ grille and all-LED headlamps along with numerous drive control technologies, the interiors get six airbags, a head-up display, climate control, and an inbuilt air purifier. The dashboard is home to a 10.25-inch touchscreen display that’s part of the Seltos’ advanced infotainment system. You can read more about the Kia Seltos here.

ISROs 2020 plans include Sun mission, Gaganyaan, Reusable Launch Vehicle test-flight and more
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has revealed its 2020 plans. Speaking to Times of India about the Organisation’s 2020 targets, ISRO chairman K Sivan has shed light on what is to come in 2020. ISRO is planning to launch a dozen key satellite missions including the high-profile interplanetary mission Aditya (sun) and first unmanned test-flight of the Gaganyaan mission, carrying a robot with human features (humanoid).
Talking about ISRO’s 2020 plans, Sivan said, “We are targeting to launch over 10 satellite missions next year. They will include advanced communication satellites GISAT 1 and GISAT-12R and earth observation satellites RISAT-2BR2 and Microsat (for surveillance). We are also targetting to launch Aditya L1 (Sun) Mission by mid-2020 and the first unmanned test-flight of Gaganyaan in December.”
The Aditya L1 Mission will be India’s first-ever solar mission. It will help scientists to study the solar Corona, which is the outer most part of the Sun’s atmosphere. It is usually hidden by the bright light of the Sun's surface. Sivan also revealed that a PSLV will be used to carry the spacecraft. The 400 KG-Class satellite will carry six scientific payloads that will be inserted in a halo orbit around the Lagrangian point 1 (L1). For reference, L1 is 1.5 million km from the Earth.
Sivan also said, “The test-flight of the reusable launch vehicle (RLV) and the first development flight of newly-developed Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV or mini-PSLV) are likely to be launched by early next year." The RLV tech will enable ISRO to reuse first and second stages of a rocket to cut costs. After injecting the satellite in its orbit, the shuttle will glide back to Earth and land on an airstrip. Like Space X’s Falcon rocket, the first rocket stage will be recovered on a vertical landing spot on a sea.
ISRO has also mapped out the Gaganyaan mission, which includes GSLV MKIII launch vehicle that will carry a humanoid robot to space. The activities of humanoid will be monitored by the scientists so as to prepare for a manned mission later on. This is the first test flight which will be followed by a second unmanned one in July 2021 and finally the human spaceflight mission in December 2021.

Airtel Wi-Fi Calling starts rolling out in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai and Kolkata
Airtel has just rolled out its VoWi-FI service across a number of states after the telecom giant first launched the service in the Delhi NCR region. As we reported earlier, the company first released the service in a select region as to test its capabilities and iron out the kinks before it went ahead and deployed the service to the rest of the country. Currently, Airtel has rolled out it’s Wi-Fi calling services in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai and Kolkata.
Avneet Singh Puri, CEO of Bharti Airtel for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana said in a statement that, “ Customer interest in VoWiFi capability is incredibly high and Airtel has been working hard to bring this feature, first to the consumers in the state of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana. The launch of VoWiFi calling is further validation of the importance of Wi-Fi to customers in the technologically advanced industry.”
You can also check if your phone is compatible with the service on Airtel’s official page.
Just a bit of a refresher, the service uses Wi-fi to allow voice calls and essentially retain the clarity and fidelity of a telecom network. This may, in turn, lead to different patterns of phone usage as it virtually costs almost nothing to use the internet as a phone service. The company is working with smartphone brands across the country to make sure their devices are compatible with the service. As of now, Airtel Wi-Fi calling is compatible with Airtel Xstream Fiber home broadband but will soon be able to function with all other broadband services and Wi-Fo hotspots.

Nokia 72, Nokia 62, Nokia 42 and others see price cut ahead of Christmas
It’s not every day that we come across price drops on recently launched smartphone models but it appears this Christmas season is bringing with it some extra cheer in the form of deep discounts on Nokia phones such as the Nokia 7.2, Nokia 6.2, and Nokia 4.2. The 6GB RAM variant of the Nokia 7.2 is currently selling on Amazon.in for Rs 16,715, making it dearer to the 4GB RAM variant by less than Rs 500. The Nokia 6.2 costs Rs 13,440, and the Nokia 4.2, Rs 6,975. Some older models too, such as the Nokia 6.1 Plus, are also seeing discounted prices on Amazon.in and Flipkart.
Nokia 7.2 (Buy it here)On Nokia India’s website, the Nokia 7.2 is listed with a price tag of Rs 18,599 for the 4GB RAM variant and Rs 19,599 for the 6GB RAM variant. The price is the same for both Cyan Green and Charcoal colour options. On Amazon.in, however, the Charcoal option on both variants bear a price tag of Rs 16,715 and Rs 16,290, respectively. This makes the 6GB RAM variant stupendously more attractive than the 4GB RAM variant. The Cyan Green option, on the other hand, can be bought with 6GB RAM on Amazon.in for Rs 17,633. It’s worth noting that both variants of the Nokia 7.2 come with 64GB of expandable storage space. You can read more about it here.
Nokia 6.2 (Buy it here)The Nokia 6.2, which sells in a single 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant on Nokia India’s website for Rs 15,999, is listed on Amazon.in with a lighter price tag of Rs 13,440 for the Ceramic Black colour option. You can have the same model in Ice for a slightly higher price of Rs 13,499. On Flipkart, the Nokia 6.2 costs a bit more, at Rs 13,890. The Nokia 6.2, for your information, comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset, a triple rear camera setup, and a 6.3-inch Full HD+ screen. The battery is a 3500mAh unit.
Nokia 4.2 (Buy it here)The Nokia 4.2 sells in a single 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant in Black on the Nokia India website for Rs 9,499 but can be bought on Amazon.in for Rs 6,975. The Pink Sand colour option, however, sees almost no discount at Rs 9,400. The Nokia 4.2 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 chipset, a dual rear camera setup, and a 5.71-inch HD+ screen. The battery is a 3000mAh unit. Read our review of it here. Apart from these three models, some older Nokia phones are seeing a discount price too. For example, you can get the 4GB RAM variant of the Nokia 6.1 Plus in Black and Blue colour options on Flipkart for Rs 8,999 even though Nokia is no longer selling it on its website. You can also get the Nokia 7.1 in Blue for Rs 11,470 on Flipkart, which is priced at Rs 12,999 on the Nokia India website.

Samsung Galaxy S11 camera to feature 9-to-1 pixel binning
Prominent leakster Ice Universe has revealed more information about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S11, specifically pertaining to the camera. There have been rumours that Samsung would be using a 108-megapixel sensor for the S11 series, but we are now also getting details on the nature of the binning. In a tweet, the leakster says that Samsung may be going with a 9-pixel bin, that is, binning 9 pixels into 1.
The sensor being used in the Samsung Galaxy S11 series is allegedly the ISOCELL Bright HM1, which sports a 108-megapixel resolution. The individual pixels measure 0.8-microns and when 9 of them are binned together, the result will be a pixel pitch of 2.4 microns. Given how Samsung approached pixel binning on its GW1 sensor, we expect the new sensor to have a Bayer filter with a 9-to-1 arrangement. This is a better approach than using a Bayer filter with a single colour array measuring 2.4 microns. In Samsung’s approach, there are physical, 108 million individual colour filters built onto the Bayer filter, which means a true, 108MP image. The higher 9-to-1 pixel binning could also result in significantly better night shots.
There is definitely a lot of buzz around the next Samsung flagship. Up until now, there had been plenty of talk around why Samsung didn’t switch to the higher megapixel sensors for its flagship smartphones of 2019, despite the company being one of two who makes 48 and 64 megapixel sensors.
Samsung’s Galaxy S11 is poised to be a camera-centric smartphone, given that its also said to house a 48 megapixel telephoto lens. The leaked images do show a triple camera setup, but the right side of the module has so far not been revealed, and is said to house more sensors. The Samsung Galaxy S11 is definitely shaping up to be an exciting device, one worthy of looking forward to.

Apple offers a million dollar bounty to researchers who can find flaws in its various operating systems
Apple is no stranger to offering rewards to users who find and exploit vulnerabilities in their system. The San Cupertino giant has announced its ‘bug bounty’ program for iOS, macOS, tvOS and more. Hackers and researchers who are actually able to find bugs and issues with the various operating systems and report them to Apple will receive a substantial reward for their efforts. The reward will depend on the severity of the exploit. The entire list of all the categories of bugs and issues are available for users to go through on Apple’s developer page.
Some of the categories include ‘Unauthorized access to iCloud account data on Apple Servers’ as well as ‘Zero-click kernel code execution with persistence and kernel PAC bypass’. The payout will range from $100,000 to a whopping 1 million dollars. That’s a lot of money and there are sure to be a bunch of hackers and researchers vying for the prize.
Just earlier in 2019, Apple embraced the hacker culture and unveiled the iOS Security Research Device Program at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas. Hackers and research experts were offered special iPhones for them to crack and find any sort of flaws on.
Here is what Apple has to say about the program. “The goal of the Apple Security Bounty is to protect customers through understanding both vulnerabilities and their exploitation techniques. Reports that include a basic proof of concept instead of a working exploit are eligible to receive no more than 50% of the maximum payout amount. Reports lacking necessary information to enable Apple to efficiently reproduce the issue will result in a significantly reduced bounty payment, if accepted at all.”
