Oppo teases the first look of its upcoming smartwatch

Oppo’s smartwatch was first teased during Oppo’s Inno Day back in December. It talked about topics such as it's plans for 5G, its breakthrough technologies, and future devices such as smartwatches, smart earbuds, and even the announcement of AR glasses. Now, a company official has shared live images of the smartwatch.

The Oppo Vice President, Brian Shen has taken to Chinese social media platform Weibo to share the first image of the company’s upcoming smartwatch. The wearable will have a square screen with curved edges and two buttons on the side. The official has refrained from giving out details regarding the name of the Oppo smartwatch or its key specs and features. However, he does note that the smartwatch will sport a flexible display with curved edges. The device can be seen sporting metal edges in gold and a cream silicone strap.  Shen says it could possibly be the ‘best looking smartwatch to launch this year'.

While the Oppo smartwatch bears strong resemblance to the Apple Watch, instead of one crown, it has two keys with a hole in between them. It could be a microphone, which could let users talk to their Oppo smartwatch without needing the smartphone. The wearable device is rumoured to come with ECG support.

At Inno Day, the company showed a teaser for the upcoming smartwatch and smart true wireless earphone, which revealed a square display for the watch. On the other hand, the truly wireless earphones resembled the Apple Airpods. Both these devices are scheduled to launch in Q1 2020.

Realme fitness band leaked as Madhav Sheth is spotted wearing one

The existence of Realme fitness band was confirmed by Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth during his latest #AskMadhav episode. He confirmed that the product will be launched in India next month. Ahead of the launch, the company seems to be testing out the product as Mr Sheth has been spotted wearing one.

One of the Beebom officials spotted Sheth wearing the Realme fitness band at the Spanish Visa centre in Delhi. Nokia 92 PureView could be first to sport an under-display camera

That all-essential selfie camera on top of the display is the biggest reason why we see notches of different kinds and shapes on smartphones today. While we’ve seen many different workarounds for the ‘notch problem’, we have yet to see a workaround that puts the selfie camera behind the display. Nokia, it seems, could be the first one to come up with such a technology on its upcoming flagship smartphone. According to a tweet from online tipster Nokia anew, Nokia is currently “testing” its “under-the-display front camera” on the the Nokia 9.2 PureView.

If Nokia succeeds in its venture, then the Nokia 9.2 PureView will be one of the first smartphones in the market to feature such technology and, hopefully, be more successful than previous models in the PureView family. Apart from wanting to learn how it works, smartphone critics such as ourselves will also want to understand just how ‘Pure’ the ‘View’ produced by the hidden camera is. Since Nokia hasn’t confirmed this development officially, we suggest you take it with a pinch of salt for the moment.

Nokia has reportedly delayed the launch of its flagship smartphone for 2020. Referred to as the Nokia 9.1 PureView in online discussions, Nokia’s upcoming flagship was originally reported to employ Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 chip. However, more recent reports suggest Nokia will brand it as the Nokia 9.2 PureView (ditching any plans for a Nokia 9.1 PureView in the process) and equip it with Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 chip. This rework is thought to be the cause of Nokia’s launch delay.

However, if you’re in the market for a Nokia PureView smartphone right now, you can consider the Nokia 9 PureView. Available through some online channels for around Rs 49,999, it's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage space. The handset’s ‘PureDisplay’ pOLED screen measures 5.99 inches diagonally and has a maximum resolution of 1440x2880 pixels. In addition, the Nokia 9 PureView sports a 12MP penta-camera setup on its back panel and a single 20MP selfie camera. You can read more about its advanced camera system here.

Note: Cover image represents the outgoing model, the Nokia 9 PureView

Apple HomePod smart speaker lands in India at Rs 19,900

Nearly two years after launching the HomePod in the US, Apple has introduced its first smart speaker in India. According to Apple’s official website, the HomePod is currently on sale in Space Gray and White colours for Rs 19,900. Apple has not yet mentioned when the HomePod will be available for orders in the country, though it’s expected to pop up on online stores such as Amazon and Flipkart sometime in the next few days. Apple’s HomePod competes directly with Amazon’s Echo line of smart speakers.

The Apple HomePod is a cylindrical speaker with a fabric outer shell and a fixed power cable. Designed to be placed on a counter or bookshelf at home or in the office, it is powered by Apple’s proprietary digital assistant Siri to receive voice commands from nearby users. Like Amazon’s Echo speakers, it can play music or ambient sounds, report weather, manage calendar appointments, control connected home appliances, answer questions based on search results, etc.

The Apple HomePod uses an array of six microphones to listen actively for ‘Hey Siri’ calls from nearby users. The speaker setup consists of an array of seven beamforming tweeters with their own individual amplifiers and an upward-firing high-excursion woofer. Powered by an Apple A8 chip, the HomePod comes with an easy pairing and setup process when it’s used with a compatible iOS device. Apple says that, using its microphone-based spatial awareness technology, the HomePod will tune itself automatically to play music well in any part of the house.

In the Indian smart speaker market, which is heavily populated with Amazon’s offerings, the Apple HomePod goes up against the Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Studio from Amazon and the Google Home from, well, Google. In recent times, Amazon has been adding a lot of products to its Echo portfolio vigorously to keep it diverse. The American multinational’s recent launches include the Echo Flex (a wall-mountable smart speaker), the Echo Input Portable Edition (a battery-powered smart speaker), and the Echo Auto (a car-mounted smart speaker).

Apple reports record earnings for first quarter, iPhone still its highest earner

Apple just got done with its earnings call for the quarter, ending on December 2018, declaring it to be a record-setting quarter. The company reported a quarterly revenue of $91.8 billion, a 9 percent gain over the same quarter from last year. According to Apple, 61 percent of the quarter’s revenue came from international markets.

A closer look at the revenue numbers from Apple’s earnings report sheds light on some very interesting revelations. For example, while Apple says that 61 percent of the revenue came from markets outside of the U.S, almost 60 percent of the revenue was generated by the iPhone alone. Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the strong demand for the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro during the holiday season was a strong contributor to the company’s record-setting growth. For perspective, of the $91.8 billion revenue, $55.9 billion was generated by iPhone sales, alone. The numbers are for net sales, meaning that any returns and discounts offered have been deducted from the final figure. The Services wing generated $12.715 billion in revenue, taking the second spot in the revenue tally. The wearables category also showed strong growth, earning Apple $10 billion in revenue, a marked improvement over the $7.3 billion from the same quarter the year before. What is surprising is that the revenue from the Mac and iPad dropped in comparison to the same quarter the year before. However, in comparison to the quarter ending September, both Mac and iPad sales did pick up, most likely owing to the general uptake in sales during the holiday season.

2019 saw Apple launch notable new products like the Apple iPhone 11 Pro (review) and the iPhone 11 (review) alongside the long-awaited 16-inch MacBook Pro. The company also announced an all-new MacPro with some serious hardware inside. There are many rumors about what’s coming from Cupertino in the coming months, but for now, it's just better to wait and watch rather than get prematurely excited.

Motorola Edge+ spotted on Geekbench, may feature Snapdragon 865 SoC, 12GB RAM

Motorola is rumoured to be working on a flagship smartphone that could be called Motorola Edge+. The device is expected to be launched at an event on February 23 during MWC 2020. The phone name was first tipped by tipster Evan Blass. He claimed that Motorola Edge+ could be launched by the company on Verizon in the US and it will carry a hole-punch display design. Now, it has appeared on Geekbench listing.

Upcoming Motorola flagship phone, Motorola Edge+ has appeared in the database of benchmark Geekbench. It scored 4106 in the single-core test and recorded a score of 12823 in the multi-core test. It is shown to be powered by an octa-core processor that has a base frequency of 1.80GHz. It is mentioned as “burton” in the motherboard field. Although that codename has appeared online for the first time, it is expected to be referring to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset.

Motorola Edge+ is likely to run Android 10. The Geekbench listing also revealed that the device could come with 12GB RAM. Other specifications of the smartphone are yet to be known. But we expect more details to show up online as we inch closer to the launch date.

Motorola Edge+ is expected to come with a punch-hole display. However, there is no word on the position of the punch-hole. It could be on the top-left or top-right corner of the display. To recall, Motorola One Vision that was unveiled a few months ago was the first punch-hole display from the company. Moreover, the leaked Moto G8 renders show a punch-hole display as well.

For reference, Moto Z2 Force was the last flagship phone revealed by the company. It was launched way back in 2017. Moto Z3 and Moto Z4 did make it to the market but they featured non-flagship chipsets. Hence, Motorola Edge+ could mark the return of Motorola in the flagship arena.

Microsoft Windows 7 to get fix for wallpaper issue even after official end of support

In a move that one might consider overly benevolent, Microsoft has promised to send out a fix for an issue caused by its final software update on Windows 7 even though it officially ended support for the operating system on January 14. The company rolled out its final update for Windows 7 on the same day. The issue is expected to affect users who have set ‘Stretch’ as the preferred fit for their desktop wallpaper. Microsoft hasn’t announced a date for the rollout of its fix.

According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft initially promised to fix the wallpaper issue only for customers who had purchased the “Extended Security Update (ESU) for on-premises versions” of Windows 7. But its support page for the software update in question (KB4534310) now reads, “We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release, which will be released to all customers running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.” We’re not sure why Microsoft changed its mind.

According to the support page, installing the faulty update could cause the desktop wallpaper to appear black when the fit is set to ‘Stretch’. It’s a minor problem at most. Microsoft has not only promised to fix it in a future release but has also provided a couple of workarounds for those affected by it: “Set your custom image to an option other than Stretch, such as Fill, Fit, Tile, or Center.” The alternative solution is: “Choose a custom wallpaper that matches the resolution of your desktop.”

To change the desktop wallpaper or the fit on Windows 7, right-click in a blank space on the desktop and select Personalize. In the Control Panel window that opens, select Desktop Background. In the following screen, click on Picture position to pick a fit that’s not the problematic ‘Stretch’. Or click on Browse… to set a different image as your wallpaper. Given that Windows 7 is now deemed deprecated in Microsoft’s books, you might want to consider upgrading to Windows 10. To find out how you can go about doing that, click here.

Poco X2 confirmed to sport 120Hz screen, 64MP main camera

Only yesterday did Xiaomi sub-brand Poco name the successor to its popular Poco F1 smartphone while confirming its launch for February 4 and already it has revealed the Poco X2’s biggest party trick: a 120Hz screen. According to a tweet that the company sent out earlier today, the Poco X2 will sport a ‘RealityFlow’ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. What’s more, the Poco X2’s teaser website suggests that the handset will sport a Sony IMX686 64MP primary camera sensor. We expect to get more details about the Poco X2 as we near its early February launch date.

Poco’s tweet reveals a little more than the inclusion of a 120Hz screen. A closer look at the image in the tweet reveals the presence of a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The fact that the Poco X2 shares its Sony IMX686 64MP main camera sensor with the Redmi K30 adds to the rumour and probability that the Poco X2 is a rebadged Redmi K30 or a at least variant of it. The Redmi K30 was launched in China in early December 2019 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chip. It has up to 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Poco’s first smartphone, the Poco F1, was launched in August 2018 as a ‘flagship killer’. The Poco F1 employs a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Its screen measures 6.18 inches and has a maximum resolution of 1080 x 2246 pixels. A flat notch on top of the display houses the single 20MP selfie camera with an aperture of f/2.0. Equipped with a 4000mAh battery and 18W fast charging, the Poco F1 entered the market with Android 8.1 Oreo but was recently upgraded to MIUI 11 that’s based on Android 10. You can read more about that here.

The Poco F1 comes with a dual camera setup on its back panel. The primary camera is a 12MP sensor with an aperture of f/1.9, while the second camera is a 5MP depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.0. A dual-LED flash accompanies the two cameras on the back panel. With its successor just around the corner, the Poco F1 is selling on e-commerce websites like Amazon.in at an all-time low price of Rs 14,999. If your immediate phone purchase must include a model with a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, you can consider the Poco F1. Read our review of it here.

New Realme smartphones with Android 10, 4300mAh battery and more spotted on US FCC Certification website

Two new Realme smartphones are in works. The devices carry model numbers RMX2063 and RMX2001. The two smartphones have been spotted on the database of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US. The company is also rumoured to be prepping for the launch of a new flagship with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. However, the two devices are expected to debut as Realme’s next-generation affordable models.

According to the FCC listing, the Realme phone with model number RMX2063 measures 163.9x75.8x9.4mm (WHD) and weighs 196 grams. The phone is listed to run on ColorOS 7, which means it could run Android 10. The phone appears to have a 4300mAh battery. Moreover, the schematics available in the FCC database suggest a power button on the right side and a volume rocker on the left. To recall, a Realme phone with model number RMX2061 had reportedly received a BIS certification in India.

Other than the Realme RMX2063, another smartphone with model number RMX2001 appears to be in development. The listing suggests that it measures 162.1x74.8x9.6mm (WHD) and weighs 191 grams. It also packs a 4300mAh battery and runs ColorOS 7, which is similar to the Realme RMX2063.

The two model numbers suggest that they are two different smartphones and not variants of a single smartphone. For reference, the Realme X had RMX1901 and RMX1951 as the model numbers. Hence, these two smartphones could be upgrades of the Realme X series.

Separately, a Realme smartphone was recently spotted on AnTuTu with model number RMX2071 and Snapdragon 865 chipset. It is said to be showcased by the company at MWC 2020 in Barcelona next month.

Samsung Galaxy Fold successor may come with Snapdragon 865, S Pen and more

Samsung is reportedly readying a true Galaxy Fold successor despite its plans to launch another foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Flip alongside the Galaxy S20 series. The Galaxy Z Flip is likely to be a clamshell foldable phone like the Motorola Razr (2019). On the other hand, the Galaxy Fold successor is expected to be designed on the roots of the original Fold. The specifications of the upcoming Galaxy Fold have surfaced online.

Max Weinbach from XDA Developers has shared speculated specs of the true successor for the Galaxy Fold, which could be launched in the second quarter of 2020. The Galaxy Fold successor is expected to be a 5G device powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. It is likely to feature an 8-inch display with ultra-thin glass that is expected to be seen on the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip. The purported Galaxy Fold successor could come with a 108MP main camera. Moreover, it is tipped to be accompanied by an S Pen stylus, which would make it the first non-Note series Samsung phone to support the S Pen.

For reference, Galaxy Z Flip is rumoured to feature an ultra-thin glass display with a plastic layer on top. The additional plastic layer is said to ensure the display is not scratched easily. Further, Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone is tipped to pack a 3300mAh battery. In contrast, the Galaxy Fold had a battery capacity of 4380mAh. But then, the Galaxy Z Flip is likely to be a clamshell device with a smaller display on the body. To compare, Motorola Razr (2019) packs a 2510mAh battery.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Flip alongside the Galaxy S20 series in February.

TVS iQube electric scooter with 75km range quietly introduced at Rs 115 lakh

TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto have for long been close competitors in the sub-250cc motorcycle market and they now appear to be taking the competition to the electric mobility space as well. In less than a fortnight after the official launch of Bajaj’s Chetak electric scooter, TVS has introduced its own electric scooter. Called TVS iQube, the scooter delivers a riding range of 75 kilometres on a single charge. The TVS iQube is currently on sale only in Bengaluru for an on-road price of Rs 1,15,000.

While the Bajaj Chetak sports a curvy, Vespa-inspired styling, the TVS iQube goes in for a squarish, white Honda ASIMO-like design. Powered by three lithium-ion battery packs, the electric motor on the iQube puts out 4.4kW of power. TVS says it’s enough to propel the scooter from 0 to 40 kilometres per hour in 4.2 seconds and achieve a top speed of 78 kilometres per hour. The IP67-rated battery can be charged using the bundled charging kit and a 5A domestic wall socket. While a full charge can take up to 5 hours to happen, TVS says a “day-long ride” can be achieved with just an hour of charging.

The TVS iQube features a digital instrument cluster in the form of a colour TFT display, which displays the battery charge status, service reminders, and other riding data. Like the Bajaj Chetak, the TVS iQube connects with the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth for extended functionality. With the optional TVS SmartXonnect service, an iQube user can use features such as geofencing and incoming call alerts. They can also enable turn-by-turn navigation on the instrument cluster when their smartphone is connected.

The iQube comes with LED lighting all around. It features a ‘Q-park assist’ system that allows the user to pull out the scooter from tight spots more easily using the power of the electric motor. It has a storage bin under the seat that’s equipped with a USB charging port. According to TVS, the scooter can manage gradients of up to 10 degrees. The front brake is a 220-millimetre disc, while the rear brake is a 130-millimetre drum. The scooter weighs 118 kilogrammes. Currently available only in Bengaluru, the TVS iQube can be ordered online on TVS Motor’s website here.

Apple iOS 14 to support all iPhone models that run iOS 13: Report

Even the most inclusive of software update rollouts from Apple tends to drop support for a couple of iPhones from the older generations. But if this new report from French portal iPhoneSoft is to be believed, then Apple’s upcoming iOS 14 could support all the iPhone models that were supported by iOS 13 last year, including the aging iPhone SE. According to the report, only a couple of iPads and possibly the iPod touch (7th gen) won’t make it to the new version later this year.

The report claims that, when Apple releases iOS 14 later in the year, it will support each and every iPhone model that was supported by iOS 13. That includes the iPhone 11 series (11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max), iPhone X series (Xs/Xs Max/XR/X), iPhone 8 series (8/8 Plus), iPhone 7 series (7/7 Plus), iPhone 6s series (6s/6s Plus), and the iPhone SE. The report goes on to suggest that iOS 14 will come preloaded on this year’s iPhone models, namely the iPhone 12 (5G), iPhone 12 Pro (5G), and iPhone SE 2/iPhone 9.

When Apple rolled out iOS 13 in September last year, it rebranded the version it delivered to its iPad line-up as iPadOS, starting with iPadOS 13 (to match the iPhone counterpart’s version number). In the process, it dropped support for devices with 1GB RAM, such as the iPad mini 2, mini 3, and the original iPad Air. The report says that with the rollout of iOS 14, the iPad mini 4 and iPad Air 2 will also be excluded. The report mentions that iOS 14 could include support for the iPod touch (7th gen). At any rate, we advise you to take this information with a pinch of salt since it’s not from a verified source.

Earlier this year, we reported that Apple could launch not one but two iPhone SE 2 models this year, given that the company’s focus is evidently spreading from the premium-range market to the mid-range market. If that turns out to be true, then we can expect the second model as well to run iOS 14. One of the two iPhone SE 2 models is expected to be based heavily on the iPhone 8. It should come with the same Touch ID-enabled home button on the chin as well. You can read more about the iPhone SE 2 here.

Nokia 72, Nokia 62 prices slashed yet again on Amazonin

The prices of the Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 have been seeing regular slashes since the launch of the two smartphones in September 2019. The most recent price cut sees the Nokia 7.2 starting at Rs 14,872 and the Nokia 6.2 starting at Rs 12,199 on Amazon.in. Both phones are available on other e-commerce websites such as Flipkart and Paytm Mall but the recently slashed prices reflect only on Amazon.in for the moment. Click here to check out the Nokia 7.2, and here to check out the more affordable Nokia 6.2.

It’s important to note that the Nokia 7.2 variant on sale on Amazon.in for Rs 14,872 is the base variant with 4GB of RAM. The top-of-the-line variant with 6GB of RAM is priced at Rs 16,787. Both variants are offered in a single Charcoal colourway with 64GB of storage that’s expandable up to 512GB using a microSD card. The Nokia 6.2 on sale on Amazon.in for Rs 12,199 comes with 4GB of RAM in a Ceramic Black colour option. The same model in the Ice colour option costs Rs 13,499. The Nokia 6.2 does not sell in a variant that offers more RAM or storage.

Nokia announced the Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 along with the Nokia Power Earbuds at IFA 2019 in Berlin. Both smartphones feature a triple camera setup on the back panel. The Nokia 7.2 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chip and an internal 3500mAh battery with support for 10W fast charging. Its screen measures 6.3 inches diagonally and has a maximum resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels. Part of Google’s Android One programme, the Nokia 7.2 runs a near-stock version of Android 9.0 Pie. It was launched in India at a starting price of Rs 18,599.

The Nokia 6.2 is similar to the Nokia 7.2 in terms of dimensions but employs a weaker Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chip and less sophisticated camera sensors. It ditches the Nokia 7.2’s 48MP primary sensor for a 16MP unit of the same f/1.8 aperture. The 8MP ultra-wide sensor and the 5MP depth sensor, however, are the same on both phones. The Nokia 6.2 loses the Nokia 7.2’s 20MP selfie camera for a weaker 8MP unit without Zeiss optics. You can read our review of the Nokia 7.2 here.

OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T receive OxygenOS 1031 with December 2019 security patch, bug fixes

OnePlus has always kept the software on its older smartphone models updated religiously and this healthy streak appears to be going strong in the new year. The company is currently rolling out OxygenOS 10.3.1 for the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T. The software update contains the latest December 2019 security patch along with a list of bug fixes. If you own either of the two OnePlus phones, you should see an update notification pop up sometime now. If you’d rather check for the update manually, you can do so by heading to Settings > System > System updates.

OnePlus’ latest software update for the two phones is heavily loaded with bug fixes. According to the changelog listed on the OnePlus Community, OxygenOS 10.3.1 fixes a black screen issue observed after unlocking the phone, an animation glitch while booting, a heating issue while the device is charging, and a random disconnection issue with 5GHz Wi-Fi hotspot. The update contains other general system fixes too. It also optimises the time taken to preview an image in Pro mode and fixes any crash issues in the default camera app. Finally, it fixes an issue that causes media not to appear in Gallery.

“This OTA will have a staged rollout. The OTA will be received by a limited number of users today and will have a broader rollout in a few days after making sure there are no critical bugs. Using VPN to download this build might not work as the rollout Is [sic] not based on regions and is randomly pushed out to a limited number of devices,” writes OnePlus Global Product Operations Manager Manu J on the OnePlus Community. In other words, OnePlus wants you to be patient and await your turn.

This Oxygen 10.3.1 update is the second update both phones are receiving since their big move to Android 10 in November last year. Nokia 92 with Snapdragon 865 could be launched in first half of 2020, foldable phone in the works

Building on the reports of the Nokia 9 PureView successor’s delayed launch in 2020, a new report claims that the company will launch the Nokia 9.2 in the first half of 2020. Nokia is said to have shelved its plan to launch a flagship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. Instead, it is reportedly focusing on a Nokia 9.2 with the newer Snapdragon 865 chipset. Another report claims that HMD Global is also working on a foldable phone.

According to a report from Nokia Power User, HMD Global may not launch a Nokia 9 PureView successor at MWC 2020. While the company is hosting an event at the tech exhibition, it is expected to launch a smartphone powered by Snapdragon 765 chipset. The Nokia 9.2 PureView is tipped to launch around 4 or 5 months later.

The report also states the upcoming flagship won’t be equipped with “Light camera technology” mainly because of the lack of post-launch support for the Nokia 9 PureView. The smartphone is rumoured to come with a big sensor from an old camera partner such as Toshiba to offer a “great camera” experience. The Nokia 9.2 is also reported to have a price tag close to that of the Nokia 8 to attract the masses.

The Nokia 9.2 could arrive with a bezel-less display and sport a 32MP or 48MP selfie shooter. However, the configuration of rear camera setup is not known yet.

Moreover, it is reported that Nokia may have cancelled some accessories, like two smartwatches, a fitness tracker, a mini projector, a selfie light, a power bank, and a mini printer. However, it is expected to showcase wireless charging pods at MWC 2020.

Separately, Nokiamob.net reports that HMD Global is working on a foldable phone. It is said to be launched sometime in either late 2020 or early 2021 with a clamshell design that is similar to that of the Motorola Razr (2019).

Its official: Poco X2 will succeed Poco F1, come to India on Feb 4

After more than a year of speculation, rumour-mongering and, more importantly, silence from the Xiaomi sub-brand, Poco is ready with its next smartphone after the Poco F1. The successor is officially called Poco X2 and, going by the teasers, the brand wants you to believe it will be ‘smooth AF’. C Manmohan, Poco India’s General Manager tweeted the smartphone would launch on February 4th, 2020.

The Poco X2 name itself has been doing the rounds of the rumour mill for quite sometime with its name cropping up on certification sites, benchmark websites and more. With the name and the tagline confirmed, it now seems the successor will take up the mantle of high-end performance phone. Just how affordable it will be, remains to be seen.

Looking at the smartphone landscape, especially in the high-end segment, high refresh rate displays and flagship Snapdragon processors have been adopted as a formula for success by OEMs like Realme and OnePlus. The ‘Smooth AF’  tagline may allude to a high refresh rate display on the Poco X2 as well, and the name leaves no doubts about which competitor Poco wants to target in the high-end segment.

However, the latest leak indicated the Poco X2 could very well be a rebranded variant of the Redmi K30 4G that was launched in China last month. If that is the case, the smartphone could come with a bigger battery, larger display and, more importantly, a 120Hz refresh rate screen, which is in line with the teasers that are doing the rounds.

More importantly, considering how the previous Poco F1 set an unrealistic standard of expecting flagship performance at a mid-range price, it will be interesting to see how the Poco X2 performs as a follow-up, without the latest flagship chipset in tow.

After more than a year of maintaining silence, Poco has been in the thick of the tech news cycle in India. Hot on the heels of Xiaomi’s announcement of bringing Mi-branded flagships to India this year, Poco announced it would be operating as an independent brand in India, with its own identity. We are not sure whether that means Poco will get its own supply chain, manufacturing, sales, marketing and after-sales servicing, but it remains unlikely as a year-old brand will be unable to enjoy the same economies of scale that Xiaomi currently enjoys in India.

Motorola phone with stylus shown off in leaked render

Motorola could be looking forward to launch a Galaxy Note-competitor. A new Motorola phone with Stylus pen has popped up online. It is rumoured to be called Moto G Stylus. The Moto G7 series was unveiled in February last year, hence the new phone could be launched in the upcoming weeks. Moreover, the company is tipped to be working on a new flagship model called the Motorola Edge+.

The latest development comes from noted tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) who tweeted an image of a Motorola phone with a stylus. The phone also sports a punch-hole notch at the left top corner of the screen. Also, it appears to feature a curved glass. However, no more details have been revealed about the phone.

Looking closely at the stylus, it doesn’t seem to have a pressure-sensitive tip that exists on the S Pen of Samsung’s Galaxy Note series. Therefore, the phone could be a mid-range offering like the LG G Stylus series and not a top-end option.

This is the first Motorola phone with a stylus. The leaked render comes after alleged Moto G Stylus with model number XT2043-4 appeared on the Radio Equipment List (REL) on the Government of Canada website. It received approval Canadian authority in early January. It also surfaced on the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website with the same model number.

The name of the phone is unknown but Evan Blass says it is not the Motorola Edge+. The leaked phone is expected to run Android 10 out of the box.

Samsung Galaxy A21s with secondary macro camera on the cards: Report

Samsung appears to be paying special attention to its Galaxy A-series of entry-level and mid-range smartphones in this new year. Last month, it officially announced the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 smartphones globally, both of which are confirmed to go live in the Indian market in the next few days. According to a new report from Sammobile, the Korean electronics manufacturer is now working on an entry-level model called Galaxy A21s with dual cameras. Other models reportedly in the works are the Galaxy A41 and possibly the Galaxy A31.

According to the report, the Galaxy A21s is not preceded by a ‘non-s’ Galaxy A21, as has been the case with many Galaxy A-series models in the past. Rather, it’s possible Samsung will market the same phone in the US as the Galaxy A21 and in other markets as the Galaxy A21s. Not much about the Galaxy A21s is known at this point. It is expected to come in two storage variants, namely 32GB and 64GB. It will also come in a number of colour options, namely blue, red, black, and white.

The Samsung Galaxy A21s, whose model number is most likely SM-A217F, is expected to sport a dual camera setup on its back panel even though it’s an entry-level device. Though the report doesn’t shed light on the resolution of the primary sensor, it does confirm the presence of a 2MP macro sensor. A macro sensor (of unknown resolution) is also expected to do duty on the more mysterious Galaxy A41. The information we have on hand so far suggests that Samsung is betting big on macro photography even on entry-level models.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71, which were announced globally last month, are expected to become available on Samsung’s online store in the next few days. The Galaxy A51 features an Exynos 9611 chip with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The slightly larger Galaxy A71 features the same maximum RAM and storage options but gets a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chip. The Galaxy A51 is expected to be priced at Rs 22,990, while the Galaxy A71 is expected to be priced at Rs 29,990. You can read more about them here.

Lenovo ThinkPad E14 quietly introduced in India, configurable from Rs 42,836

In early December 2019, we reported that Lenovo would switch to a simpler format of model numbers on its popular ThinkPad line of business laptops. We noted that two of the models in the E-series—the ThinkPad E490 and ThinkPad E495—were running out of numbers in the ‘400’ series and that they would be succeeded by the ThinkPad E14, which was already spotted in some Asian markets. And now, it appears Lenovo has quietly brought the ThinkPad E14 to India as well. According to the Lenovo India website, the ThinkPad E14 starts at Rs 42,836.

The ThinkPad E-series has always consisted of entry-level business laptops and the latest ThinkPad E14 is no different. When compared with its predecessors, it is slightly slimmer. New features include stereo speakers by Harman Kardon and the proprietary ThinkShutter webcam privacy slider. Though it succeeds the Intel-powered ThinkPad E490 and the AMD-powered ThinkPad E495 in terms of generation, the ThinkPad E14 comes with only Intel CPU options at the moment. In fact, Lenovo has not listed any readily shippable variants for the ThinkPad E14 on its official website. Instead, it has made the model fully configurable using Lenovo’s recently launched ‘Build your own’ online model configurator.

The ThinkPad E14 can be configured with up to an Intel 10th Gen Core i7 CPU with four cores. System RAM ranges from 4GB to 16GB. Internal storage options include a 2.5-inch hard drive with up to 2TB capacity and a PCIe NVMe solid-state drive with up to 512GB capacity. Because the laptop features dual storage, you can have a hard drive and a solid-state drive. One of the solid-state drive options included is an Opal-compliant self-encrypting unit. Though the 14-inch screen has Full HD resolution as standard, you’ll have to pay more for the IPS panel with 250 nits of brightness. There’s a single discrete graphics option, namely the AMD Radeon RX 640 card with up to 2GB of GDDR5 video RAM.

Apart from the aforementioned options, there are a few more configurable elements on the ThinkPad E14 online configurator. For example, you could throw in a backlit keyboard (something the previous models didn’t have) and a fingerprint reader (integrated into the power button now). You can also upgrade to Intel Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. By default, the laptop comes with no operating system; Windows 10 is an optional purchase. A fully kitted-out ThinkPad E14 with Windows 10 Pro will set you back Rs 97,164, while the most basic trim with no Windows OS at all will cost you Rs 42,836.

Astronauts bake cookies in space for first time using special space oven

In what will go down in history as one of the many firsts in space, astronauts aboard the International Space Station successfully baked food using a special oven designed to work specifically in microgravity. Astronauts Luca Parmitano and Christina Koch baked five chocolate chip cookies in separate batches during Christmastime as part of a food science experiment to explore cooking options in long-haul space voyages. While the space station was filled with the aroma of fresh cookies during the experiment, the astronauts got to eat none of them. Three of them were returned to Earth earlier this month for testing.

The special space oven the astronauts used to bake cookies was designed and built by a New York-based duo called Zero G Kitchen. The oven was installed by space station services provider Nanoracks. The oven looks slightly larger than a regular microwave unit and consists of a long, tubular section for baking food. Since convection can’t be achieved in space, the oven relies on electric heating elements in the same way a typical kitchen toaster does. Designed to draw small amounts of power from the space station’s internal power grid, the plug-and-play oven can heat food up to 177 degrees Celsius.

The dough for baking cookies in space was provided by DoubleTree by Hilton, a large American hotel chain that’s known for its cookies. According to a report by CNN, the astronauts baked the first four cookies at 148.8 degrees Celsius for 25 minutes, 75 minutes, and 120 minutes, respectively. They baked the fifth cookie at a slightly higher 162.7 degrees Celsius for 130 minutes before letting it cool for about ten minutes. The fourth and fifth cookies were considered to be the most successful because of their extended baking times.

“While we have initial visual and scent feedback from the crew aboard the ISS, we're excited to dive into fully understanding the baking results -- including breaking down why the bake time and temperature in space varies from what we are used to seeing on Earth, as well as if the baking tray, which was designed specifically for microgravity, impacted the final shape of the baked cookies,” commented Mary Murphy, Senior Internal Payloads Manager at Nanoracks. Meanwhile, NASA astronaut Christina Koch tweeted an image of the baked cookies in space a day after Christmas.

OnePlus reveals Concept One prototype in original all-black leather finish

Whether you like the OnePlus Concept One prototype or not, it’s safe to say it turned heads when the popular Chinese electronics manufacturer showcased it at CES earlier this month. If you’re a fan of it, here’s a fun fact for you: the OnePlus Concept One prototype originally donned a plain black leather finish before it took on McLaren’s signature papaya orange look for the CES demoes. OnePlus recently published photos of the prototype smartphone in its original black trim on the OnePlus Community while sharing a bit more information on its conception.

Renowned automaker McLaren started using the papaya orange colour in 1968 for Formula One races, beginning with the McLaren M7A. Today, it’s seen on the 720S sports car as well. OnePlus, which has often collaborated with McLaren to create McLaren-inspired OnePlus models, says it drew inspiration from the 720S when it styled the Concept One prototype. “We worked with McLaren on applying the same premium leather that is used on the 720s,” comments Kevin Tao from the OnePlus Industrial Design team.

According to Tao, it took OnePlus three months to optimise that famous ‘invisible cameras’ technology on the Concept One prototype for speed and power consumption. OnePlus new technology, which uses electrochromic glass, can electronically hide or show the camera stack on the rear panel of the Concept One prototype in 0.7 seconds. Talking about mainstream availability of the technology in the market, Tao adds, “A new technology application requires user and market feedback, and when the time is ripe we will introduce it to the market.”

Tao also believes OnePlus is stepping into a new design territory that reflects the marriage of traditional design elements (colours, material, finish) on a smartphone with electronic components, as seen on the Concept One prototype. “We are now working with materials that have dynamic properties, properties we can control and tune however we like, and that then become part of the functionality of a device,” he adds. It’s entirely possible that the ‘invisible cameras’ technology we saw on the Concept One prototype will make it to the market in a OnePlus model someday soon.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip might have a tiny secondary screen, dual-camera setup details leaked

We are nearing the February 11 Galaxy Unpacked event where Samsung will supposedly launch the Galaxy S20 series of smartphones, along with its next foldable phone. Almost every other day rumours and reports about the devices are cropping up online. After a promo poster and some key specs of the Galaxy Z Flip leaked, we now have a couple of more reports about the upcoming handset. Some key specs of the phone were previously outed by XDA‘s Max Weinbach and he’s back at it again. This time, the tipster has revealed some more information about Samsung’s clamshell foldable device like it’s camera details, charging capabilities, info about the reported front display and more.

As per the report, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip could come equipped with a dual-camera on the rear. Both the sensors here are said to feature a 12MP resolution and while one is said to be a wide camera, the other one could be an ultra-wide camera. Previously leaked renders of the phone hinted at a tiny front display and the fresh leak suggests it could be 1-inch in size and not 0.1-inch as it was mentioned in Weinbach’s original tweet. It is said to indicate charging speeds, battery info and might work as a viewfinder to guide taking selfies using the rear cameras.

Some additional information about the device includes a side-mounted capacitive fingerprint scanner. The Galaxy Z Flip might also support 15W charging, which we presume is for wireless charging. There might also be reverse wireless charging support on the phone. Display on the device is said to employ “Samsung Ultra Thin Glass" which will have a crease and the screen is said to be a Dynamic AMOLED display.

So Galaxy Z Flip. Capacitive fingerprint scanner on the side. Dual 12MP cameras, wide and ultra wide. 15W charging. Wireless charging and reverse wireless charging are supported. It will use "Samsung Ultra Thin Glass" which has crease. It will use a Dynamic AMOLED display.

— Max Weinbach (@MaxWinebach) January 23, 2020

A previous leak about the handset hinted at a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED Display. Instead of the 108MP camera that is rumoured to be present on the device, it is said to sport a 12MP main camera. On the front, there may be a 10MP sensor for selfies and it is said the whole package could be backed by either a 3300mAh battery or a 3500mAh battery. The phone will most likely run on One UI 2.1 and could be announced in black and purple colour models.

UN bars officials from using WhatsApp over security concerns, company responds

The United Nations (UN) has barred officials from communicating on WhatsApp citing accusations made against the Saudi Arabia crown prince back in 2018. The crown prince was accused of using the app to allegedly hack the phone of Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos. “It is not supported as a secure mechanism,” a UN spokesman said on Thursday. UN experts say they had details pointing to “possible involvement” of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman in the alleged 2018 cyberattack on Bezos. As a result, senior officials at the UN have been instructed not to use WhatsApp.

Based on the forensic report by Washington-based FTI Consulting, the UN called for an immediate investigation by the US and other authorities. The report claims Bezos’ iPhone was hacked by a malicious video file sent from a WhatsApp account used by the crown prince of Saudi Arabia. While there is no proof of that happening, Farhan Haq, a UN spokesman said, “the senior officials at the UN have been instructed not to use WhatsApp, it’s not supported as a secure mechanism.”

The directive to stop using WhatsApp was given to UN officials last June. When asked about the move by the UN, WhatsApp Director of Communications Carl Woog said, “Every private message is protected by end-to-end encryption to help prevent WhatsApp or others from viewing chats. The encryption technology that we developed with Signal is highly regarded by security experts and remains the best available for people around the world.”

A ban specifically targeting WhatsApp has left experts in disbelief. According to Oded Vanunu, Researcher at Tel Aviv-based security consultancy Checkpoint that regularly points out security flaws in popular messaging apps, “WhatsApp takes security seriously compared to the other social media messaging platforms.” He added, “Every application has vulnerabilities that can be exploited in some way.”

Intel may reduce prices for its processors in 2020

Intel hasn’t had the best year in 2019, with AMD rail-roading Team Blue’s consumer desktop chips across multiple metrics. AMD’s 7nm based Ryzen 3 processors offered more cores than their Intel counterparts while charging customers lower than what Intel was asking for. Additionally, thanks to the higher core/thread count, AMD’s processors started to show Intel up on various workloads. Intel still commands the advantage when it comes to single-threaded loads and even gaming to some extent, but it hasn’t been enough to stop AMD quickly eating into Intel’s share of the desktop processor market. Intel might be readying to counter AMD with a revised price strategy through 2020.

According to a report by DigiTimes, Intel may be considering a price reduction for all its chips in 2020. However, the price cut could be rolled out in phases, with OEMs being the first ones to receive Intel’s chips at a lower price. The report of Intel offering lowered prices to OEMs might happen sometime in the second half of 2020. However, there is no way to be sure that OEMs would actually pass on the benefit of cheaper Intel processors onto the consumers.

It should be noted that there is some merit to Intel’s alleged price reduction plans. Last year when Intel announced its 10th generation Core X HEDT processors, they were almost 50 percent cheaper than their predecessors. So Intel isn’t completely closed off to the idea of lowering the price of its chips. However, a question worth asking is why would Intel offer cheaper processors to OEMs before consumers? One of the biggest endorsement for AMD’s popularity in the last year has been the fact that retailers have had a hard time maintaining stock of various Ryzen 3 SKUs. OEMs haven't been raving about the notable value for money offered by Ryzen, but actual end-consumers who’ve bought the processors off the shelf and built systems with them.

Even if Intel manages to price their processors the same as AMD’s counterparts, there’s still the challenge of the price-to-performance proposition.  AMD has pretty much perfected the art of offering more bang for the buck, so Intel may have a bit of an uphill battle there. But if the contemplations are indeed true, it would mean great news for those who are Intel loyalists, and at the end of the day, it’s the consumers who win.
