Citroen announces Ami all-electric light quadricycle with 70km range

Citroën has announced in France a new all-electric light quadricycle called Ami. Designed to compete with the Renault Twizy electric quadricycle that has been around in the European market since 2012, the Citroën Ami is capable of delivering a driving range of up to 70 kilometres on a single charge and a claimed top speed of 45 kilometres per hour. The Citroën Ami will be available in France from March 30 and in Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, and Germany a few months later.

Being a quadricycle, the Citroën Ami is about the same size as the Bajaj Qute that sells in India. Thanks to its symmetric exterior components, the Citroën Ami looks more or less the same whether it’s viewed from the front or back. In fact, Citroën has fitted a rear-hinged door on the driver’s side and a front-hinged door on the passenger’s side to maintain symmetry in the car’s design. On the inside, the little French quadricycle has two seats and a small dashboard with a dedicated smartphone holder.

The Citroën Ami is powered by a flat 5.5kWh lithium-ion battery that is housed under the floor. Citroën says it can be charged fully in three hours using a domestic 220V power socket and the bundled charging cable. Citroën also says that, since the Ami is considered a quadricycle in Europe, it can be driven with or without a valid driving licence. In France, drivers over the age of 14 can drive an Ami if they have earned a road safety certificate.

The new Citroën Ami comes with purchase, car sharing, and long-term rental options. It can be bought for 6,000 euros (Rs 4.77 lakh approx) as an online order or from a Citroën showroom. Alternatively, it can be rented on a long-term basis (48 months) for 19.99 euros (Rs 1,590 approx) a month after an initial payment of 2,644 euros (Rs 2.10 lakh approx). There’s also a car sharing option available through intermediary Free2Move, which lets a subscriber borrow the Citroën Ami at 0.26 (Rs 20.69) per minute. We don’t know at the moment if or when Citroën will launch the Ami in India.

OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T receive OxygenOS 1032 with February 2020 security patch

OnePlus has generally pushed software updates out to its devices in a timely fashion. In the latest instance of this positive trend, the Chinese electronics manufacturer is rolling out the latest OxygenOS 10.3.2 software as an over-the-air update to the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T. The update, which contains the latest security patch for Android, is currently being rolled out in a staged manner. If you own either of the models, you can expect to see the notification update pop up anytime now.

According to OnePlus Global Product Operations Manager Manu J, the new OxygenOS 10.3.2 update carries the latest February 2020 security patch for Android. In addition, it comes with a fix for a previously reported bug that causes the screen to flicker when the user is swiping up from the lock screen to unlock the device. Lastly, the update contains fixes for some ‘general bugs’ and improves the overall system stability. Read the changelog published by OnePlus here.

According to some of the OnePlus Community members, the new update indeed fixes the screen flickering issue in the lock screen but fails to bring a solution for a notch-related complaint that began with Android 10. According to many users on the forum, Android 10 does not ‘hide’ (blacken) the status bar around the display notch the way Android 9 Pie did. Instead it pushes the entire status bar below the notch, thus wasting some essential screen space.

The OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T received their last software update to OxygenOS 10.3.1 exactly one month ago, which contained a long list of system-level bug fixes. Apart from carrying the December 2019 security patch for Android, the OxygenOS 10.3.1 update fixed a critical camera crash issue and optimised the image preview time in Pro mode. It also fixed a disconnection issue many users reportedly faced while using 5GHz Wi-Fi hotspot. You can read more about the fixes in the previous software update here.

Watch how PUBG Mobile has been keeping cheaters out of the game

PUBG Mobile is not just about a hundred people fighting it out, keeping cheaters out is also a big fight for the developer in its goal to keep a fair and competitive environment in the game. The game released a behind-the-scene look at how they have been fighting cheaters using the Project: Ban Pan security system that results in the ban of about 8,000 accounts every day.

Project: Ban Pan was showcased during the PUBG Mobile Club Open 2019 Fall Split Global Finals in December 2019 enforcing a zero-tolerance policy for cheating. The video is based on a real case of a cheater who got banned for ten years. Check it out below -

PUBG Mobile also added a few new features to keep the game free of cheaters. Death Replay is one such feature available in the latest 0.17.0 update of the game. The update will be rolled out on March 3, and will let players see how they died in the game from the perspective of the opponent.

There’s also a PUBG Mobile Safety Station, a website that gives players a platform to report suspicious behaviour and track whether reported users found cheating got their due punishments.

“Like our players, we’ve always had a zero-tolerance policy for cheating. To protect the fair and competitive environment of the game, creating a fair and even playing field is always one of our highest priorities,” Vincent Wang, General Manage of Global Publishing, Tencent Games said in a press statement.

OnePlus to reveal something on March 3, and its not the OnePlus 8

There’s never a dull moment for the people at OnePlus. Just as the hype around the OnePlus Concept One was starting to simmer down, OnePlus UK’s twitter handle has announced the existence of another new product. A short video on the Twitter page lists March 3 2020 as the reveal date.

The video shows a collection of pipes and metallic structures, without giving a clear idea of what the device could be. According to OnePlus UK’s tweet, this is not a smartphone or even a commercial product for that matter, leading us to believe that OnePlus may be gearing up to reveal another concept project to the world.

Analysing the video, there seems to be a myriad of suggestions in there. At initial glance, the metallic parts seem to resemble the inside of a watch, but then we see a pipe-like structure that’s more commonly associated with the type of lens known as the probe lens. Briefly, we also see the number 6 machined into the side of one of the panels. Needless to say, the video is not giving much away, but thankfully, the official reveal is only a few days away.

OnePlus is expected to launch the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro in the coming months, expectedly a little sooner than usual. Usually, OnePlus themselves start releasing bits of official information about the phone ahead of launch, and since that hasn’t happened yet, we can assume that this teaser is not for the phone. OnePlus also recently showed off the Concept One, a smartphone that the company said will not be available for sale. The smartphone’s main USP was the electrochromic glass that was used to cover the camera assembly, making the cameras completely disappear when not in use. OnePlus also said that the glass could double us as a neutral density filter.

Google Authenticator app no longer safe thanks to new malware

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) was the industry’s answer to curbing illegitimate access for online accounts. This was especially the case to prevent bank accounts from being hacked and was eventually utilized by companies like Google, Facebook, Apple etc. Now a new security threat claims to be able to steal 2FA codes from the Google Authenticator.

According to Threatfabric, new Android malware is capable of stealing 2FA codes from Google’s app. Typically apps like Google’s 2FA or even Microsoft’s App for that matter are considered safer than the SMS method of receiving 2FA codes. This was because SMS isn’t transmitted over a secure protocol and can be intercepted. Then there’s the additional threat of SIM cloning that has led to multiple counts of banking fraud in the past. Now, it would appear that Google’s 2FA app has also been proven to be vulnerable.

According to Threatfabric, the malware is not yet being distributed or advertised on underground forums, suggesting that the hack may still be in testing stages. What we don’t know yet is whether the malware is exploiting something in the Android OS or a weakness in Google’s 2FA app to gain access to the codes. The report only lists the vulnerability to impact Android, meaning iOS users are still secure. This could also mean that the vulnerability exploits a combined vulnerability in Android and the 2FA app. There is also no information on whether the malware would make other 2FA apps vulnerable, but in either case, it is something to be supremely worried about.

Instagram brings Direct Messaging to Windows 10

Instagram, ever since its acquisition by Facebook, has slowly been expanding on its image as a social media platform. In its latest bid to increase the ways in which users can access the platform, Instagram has now finally brought direct messaging to Windows 10.

Instagram has updated its app on the Windows Store which now allows users to access their direct messages on their Windows 10 PCs. The interface of the app is very much like the one you’d experience on the web, but, with one addition; the DM button. Being able to send and receive messages on Instagram has just got more convenient, with the feature now being accessible on Windows 10 machines. Sadly, those who browse Instagram using web browsers will not be able to use the feature since its only available in the Windows app.

Instagram has slowly been expanding and opening up the ways in which users can engage with the platform, by initially making it possible to browse images using a web-browser. Slowly it allowed users to interact with the posts as well, allowing for comments, reactions and likes to be posted through the browser. In its recentmost development, Instagram brought Stories to the web, allowing people to view stories, but not interact with them. For the most part, posting content on Instagram via a web-browser is still missing, and likely that it would be the last thing the Facebook-owned company brings to its feature set.

In case you would like to use Instagram’s DM feature using your Windows 10 PC, then you’d need to download the Instagram app from the Microsoft Store.

GameStop reveals several PS5 features but its nothing we didnt already know

Sony has been silent about its upcoming PS5 for far too long. The last time the Japanese tech giant spoke about the console was at CES 2020 where we got a look at the official PS5 logo. Since then the only thing we know for sure is that Sony will not be present at E3 2020 and has also withdrawn from PAX and GDC 2020 due to the Coronavirus. GameStop seems to be looking to fill the void of PS5 news and has a listing page for the PS5 that reveals some details about the upcoming console. The page does not have any new information and only reiterates what we already know about the console.

The page talks about the fact that the console can play physical discs, something we are aware of. It also talks about the new features of the PS5 controller including the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, again features we have been aware of for months now. The listing also says that the console will have “full 8K TV support, Bespoke 8-core AMD chipset, 3D Audio, built-for-purpose SSD storage, backward compatibility with PS4 games/PSVR hardware, And ray-tracing capabilities.” Again, we have been aware of this information. Elaborating on the CPU, the listing says that the console will have an 8-core, 16-thread CPU based on AMD’s Zen 2 microarchitecture.

Microsoft on the other hand recently released a blog post by Xbox Head, Phil Spencer. The blog highlights the fact that the console has a 12 Teraflop GPU based on RDNA 2. It has a ZEN 2 CPU along with SSD storage and also supports hardware-accelerated DirectX ray-tracing. It also supports HDMI 2.1 bringing with it features like ALLM, VRR and more. You can read all the information revealed by Phil Spencer here.

When it comes to games, Microsoft has confirmed that all first-party cross-gen games need to be purchased once. When you play a compatible game on the Series X, it will download the necessary update to take advantage of the new console. CD Projekt Red has said that Cyberpunk will need to be purchased only once on the Xbox. So if you purchase the game on your Xbox One and upgrade your console to the Series X, the game will download the relevant update when the developer releases it. This is called Smart Delivery and the option to partake is open to all developers.

Both Microsoft and Sony are slated to launch their new consoles in 2020.

Google wants its apps back on Huawei devices, applies for a license

Huawei’s ongoing tussle with the U.S government has been ongoing for a while now. Because of a trade ban imposed on the Chinese company, Huawei had to lose out on offering Google services and apps in its new smartphones. A new report now states Google is keen to starting working with Huawei again and wants its apps back on Huawei devices.

Google has reportedly applied for a license to bundle Google apps in Huawei devices and effectively resume business with the Chinese tech giant. Just a few days earlier, Google had warned Huawei users not to side load Google apps for security reasons.

Google play and Android Vice President, Sameer Samat told German news outlet DPA that Google has applied for a license but could not comment on when a decision based on the application will be made.

Last year, Microsoft was granted a similar license to do business with Huawei and continue having Windows OS in Huawei laptops like MateBook 13. Google can technically argue with the same logic Microsoft applied and the world will be much better off with Huawei back into familiar territory with access to the Google Play Store and other services.

Springworks launches WhatsApp tool that allows instant identity verification

A Bengaluru-based HRTech startup named Springworks has launched a WhatsApp-based tool - SpringVerify - that allows users to quickly and seamlessly verify someone’s identity in a couple of minutes. While corporations have been running Employee Background Checks forever, this is the first time that employers, whether in a business or household setting, will have access to a tool of this kind, right within WhatsApp. Users will be able to verify who they are dealing with. It is one of the earliest adoptions of WhatsApp to be used for Identity Verification and Crime Monitoring across the globe.

We just launched a #WhatsApp tool that tells you whether a govt ID furnished by a person is a valid ID or fake. It's as simple as taking a pic of the ID + sending a message on WhatsApp. Takes 2 mins. flat! Try it out: https://t.co/emhVwrwJ2h ++also runs a court record check.

— Abhash Kumar (@AabhashK) February 27, 2020

If you need to verify someone’s identity on WhatsApp, all you need to do is just give a missed call at 080-47193400 to get started. You can also start a WhatsApp chat to verify identity through this link. The tool integrates with the WhatsApp API. It lets users share a picture of one of the Pan Card/Driving License/Aadhaar Card/Voter ID Card right inside WhatsApp to know who they are dealing with. SpringVerify then verifies whether the furnished ID card is present in the government records. Moreover, the user can also share a picture or selfie of the ID holder and the tool will match that with the picture on the ID. It has multiple use cases, for example, a seller can use it for identifying the OLX buyer and vice versa.

The tool is free to use for the first 1,000 users. However, a check will typically cost Rs 49. SpringVerify on WhatsApp also has another unique capability to find whether the ID holder has a Court Record. It is able to match this with digitized court records only from courts of law across India.

“Going forward we’ll also be launching a service that will do ‘Continuous Crime Monitoring’ and notify the user if a Court Record match is found for the ID being verified, as soon as it happens”, said Anoop Suresh, VP-Business and Ops at Springworks. “We have translated all our learning and product capabilities from having run employee background checks for 150+ enterprises and high-growth organisations over the last year into this tool and made it simpler for everyday use”, said Kartik about the origins of the WhatsApp tool.

Apple may announce an iPad keyboard with a trackpad later this year

Apple is tipped to release a new iPad accessory this year. According to a new report, an iPad keyboard with a built-in trackpad could be incoming. It is rumored to be released alongside the next version of iPad Pro later this year. The leak comes after Apple was reported to bring an updated Smart Keyboard with a scissor-switch design. It could be similar to the design we have on the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The latest development comes from The Information. It claims that Apple could be readying a new iPad keyboard with a built-in trackpad. Apple markets the iPad as an alternative to Windows laptops. Hence, by adding a trackpad to the keyboard, the company would be able to make the iPad Pro a better substitute for laptops. The report says the new iPad Pro Smart Keyboard will be "made of materials similar" to the current Smart Keyboard options. Further, Foxconn is claimed to be one of the "main manufacturers" of the new Smart Keyboard.

The exact launch date of the new accessory is still unknown.  However, the report goes on to say that it will be launched sometime “later this year”, possible alongside the iPad Pro. The tablet is said to come with a triple rear camera setup, which is similar to the one seen on the iPhone 11 Pro models. The company is also rumored to have plans to integrate a 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor on the new iPad Pro model. It may enable new augmented reality (AR) and camera experiences.

With the built-in trackpad in the Smart Keyboard, Apple would give a tough fight to Microsoft's Surface and Samsung's Galaxy tablets.
