Watchout Netflix, Disney+ launching in India via Hotstar on April 3

Disney+ was originally set to launch in India via Hotstar on March 29 but is now officially launching on April 3. The information comes from Hotstar's Twitter account. The Tweet reads, “This is not a drill! The biggest Super Heroes, magical stories for everyone, exclusive Disney+ Originals and all that you've been waiting for are (finally) landing on Disney+ Hotstar. 3rd April. Really.” According to TechCrunch, the subscription fee for the service will go up from Rs 999 per annum to Rs 1499 per annum. Hopefully, we will get to see a bump in the streaming quality as well, but that is something we will know when the service is publicly available.

TechCrunch goes on to say that there is a more affordable plan priced at Rs 399. This plan will include movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) along with live sporting events and a catalogue of movies and shows along with Hotstar originals. The 399 plan will not include Disney+ Originals. The Rs 1499 plan, however, will offer customers content from partners including HBO, Fox, and Showtime. So if you are one that likes watching shows like Game of Thrones, True Detective and more, then the Rs 1499 plan is the one for you to consider.

Disney+ Hotstar was expected to launch in India on March 29, but it looks like this was delayed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We still aren't sure about whether the service will finally start streaming in 4K and HDR or whether it will give users the option of profiles or increase the number of simultaneous streams. We will get you the answers to all these questions soon.

In the meantime, know that the Amazon Prime subscription costs Rs 999 per annum, giving you access to Prime Videos, Prime Music and Even Prime Delivery. Netflix has a bunch of plans ranging from the mobile-only Rs 199 per month plan all the way up to Rs 799 per month, giving you access to 4 simultaneous playbacks and quality up to 4K and HDR. You can read more about Netflix’s subscriptions here.

Is Houseparty app really hacking your phone Everything you need to know

Ever since various countries, ours included went into lockdown, Houseparty, a video calling app shot through the roof in popularity. The app allows you to add contacts to your profile and as you video chat with someone, others on your friends list can join the conversation, without seeking permission. The app also offers games built-in that you can play with your friends during the video chat. Given the social distancing and isolation brought on by it, people turned to the app as a means of being digitally social. Now, the app has come under some serious fire for claims of stealing users banking details, trying to hack into their Netflix, Spotify accounts and more. Are these claims real?

Where it all began

Claims of Houseparty running rogue through the smartphone started early on Monday, with users taking to Twitter to report suspicious behaviour. Many tweets said “someone is trying to access my Uber account, two days after I installed Houseparty” and similar. Many users shared screenshots from Spotify stating that someone was trying to access their accounts from Russia, Israel, Netherlands etc. Some people even shared screenshots alleging unauthorized transactions, again with the claim being that the behavior only started after they installed Houseparty.

What security experts have to say

Before we get into what professional cybersecurity experts have said, let’s first just consider how Android and iOS protect apps from each other, especially banking apps. Both iOS and Android offer a Sandbox, a cordoned off part of the ecosystem for secure apps to run, without being in contact with anything outside of it. Think of it like a fenced off area, your banking app lives inside it and all other apps outside. The outside and the inside cannot interact. That prevents apps from “hacking” into your banking app. Additionally, banking apps do not store your login information on the device, so any claims of credentials being stolen are either uninformed paranoia or the result of a very poorly developed banking app.

As for Houseparty running a hack through your phone is concerned, Naked Security is a threat newsroom by Sophos, a security and encryption company that’s been in the business for over 30 years. Naked Security’s report notes that it is unlikely that Houseparty is a rogue app, designed and serving he purpose of stealing data and credentials.

What Could have gone wrong

Naked Security hypothesizes that in case Houseparty was responsible for all the illicit activity, its more likely that a server of theirs was compromised. That would need to be in conjunction with the fact that many users may have used the same password for their Houseparty account as they did for many others, effectively making their Houseparty password a “masterkey” of sorts. Additionally, Houseparty’s servers would need to store your account information, including your passwords, in a plain text file, a practice that is gravely frowned upon and definitely not expected from an app owned by Epic. while they company has denied any breach of their servers, there has been a trend amongst big corporations to defend their innocense until irrefutable evidence to the contrary is found. Thus, the only way to prove that Houseparty's servers were hacked is if the group reponsible was to come forward with damning evidence.

Another nail in the “hacker app”coffin

Typically, when hackers want to siphon off data from your phone, they will usually send you a link to click on, which will take you to a legitimate-looking website, but in the background, it’s probably installing malware scripts to steal the contents of your phone. The reason for this is because both iOS and Android have a very robust app-screening process, one that catches apps that are pure “malware.” While a few apps with deeply embedded questionable code do slip through every now and then, an app that housed code to infiltrate every sandbox, monitor all keystrokes and upload all that data to third-parties would never pass Google’s Play Protect scans or the scrutiny of the iOS App Store moderation team. Typically, if users do find an app behaving maliciously, teams at Android and Apple proactively look into the app and remove it, something that hasn’t happened with Houseparty yet, despite the major social media uproar.

Epic Bounty Program

Convinced that this is nothing short of a smear campaign, Epic has announced two bounty programs. The first bounty program offers a million U.S. dollars to anyone who can provide hard evidence of the Houseparty app actually hacking through a user’s phone. The second bounty program is for another million dollars, up for grabs to anyone who can point to the source of this misinformation campaign. With two million dollars up for grabs, it’s difficult to ignore the confidence Epic has in its property’s innocence.

What Should You Do

If the novelty for Houseparty has worn off, you can delete your account before deleting the app. If you would still like to continue using Houseparty, it would be recommended that you change the passwords to your other social media, email and services accounts. This is so that in the off-chance hackers gained access to the host server for Houseparty and discovered the user passwords, your other accounts are no longer vulnerable. Although Houseparty has clarified through its official Twitter account that none of their servers were breached and that all accounts are still secure. If you’re still shaking with paranoia, then feel free to delete your account and the app, but DO NOT forget to change all your passwords.

Bored at home These group video calling apps will keep you connected

Bored during the lockdown? While the coronavirus-induced nation-wide lockdown is like a dream for introverts, the social butterflies may find it difficult not seeing the regular faces to talk to. Sure, your organisation has ramped up its infrastructure to support group video calls with its employees, but what about when you have to get together with your friends sitting at your home? We compiled a list of free group video calling apps that you can use to dial in and have a small party right on your phone’s screen. Here they are —

Zoom

Zoom has emerged as the undisputed champion among video calling apps during the lockdown. It has already surpassed TikTok and Instagram to become the most downloaded app in India with many organisations, colleges and schools relying on the app for business. You can also use it for your personal calls. 40 minutes chats on the app are free, post which you have to pay with plans starting from $14.99.

The USP of the app is the number of people it can support. A Zoom session can support up to a 100 people and the app’s algorithm ensures smooth connectivity and clean audio.

Google Duo

This app from Google started with two-way video calling but soon expanded to support up to 8 people in a chat. And recently Google announced it will support up to 12 people to let you stay connected with a lot more people. Duo is probably the easiest app to use for video-calling. There’s no hassle of typing in a username and getting it verified. All you need is a phone number.

The USP of Google Duo is in its simplicity. It may not support a lot of people in a chat, but it’s free and is available across all platforms including iOS and Android. Our favourite feature of the app is its ability to show what the person who is calling you is doing even before you pick up the call.

Instagram

Your favourite social media platform also supports video calling. It’s built into the DM section which is good for a quick call. It also supports up to six people in a group call and the quality is surprisingly good.

The USP is its availability. By now, most of your friends will have an Instagram account, so initiating a session shouldn’t require a lot of setup.

WhatsApp

Ever since WhatsApp added video calling, and especially with the proliferation of 4G data, video calling itself have taken off like anything in the country. And that’s simply because WhatsApp is the most used messaging app in India. You can take up to four people in a session with average video and audio quality.

The USP is of course the wider availability. Anyone with a smartphone can join in and it doesn’t need extra steps to set up.

Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger has had video calling support for quite some time now. And with each update, the app has added more and more features to make it more interactive and fun. Surprisingly though, it’s usage has been limited to few users with many still choosing to go with Instagram and WhatsApp. Perhaps it has something to do with how much resources it ends up consuming.

The USP of this are the fun AR filters it supports. You can spend hours trying out fun and creative filters with your friends.

Houseparty

This fun app has been around for quite some time but it also during quarantine that it has gone viral (too soon?). The app supports eight people in a room and you can drop in and out as you please.

The USP of this app is the way it’s designed to bring out the real you. It acts as a social network but doesn’t let you post a status or anything. Instead you just call up friends you want to chill with and chat or play games together. It’s fun. At least the first few times.

Coronavirus effect: Zoom dethrones WhatsApp and TikTok to become the number one app on the Google Play Store

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the nationwide lockdown in India, people are working from home. When working from home, they are resorting to video conferencing apps to stay in touch with friends, family, and co-workers as well. One such app which has gained popularity is Zoom. To tell you the kind of popularity the service has gained, on the Google Play store it has been downloaded more than 100,000,000 times. To put things into perspective, on the Google Play Store, TikTok has been downloaded more than 500,000,000 times and WhatsApp has been downloaded more than 5,000,000,000 times.

Coming back to Zoom, it is a video conferencing app with the ability to have 100 people in a meeting. Since the app is used by business and consumers alike and is easy to use to set up conferences, it has become the go-to solution.

However, not everything was a bed of roses for the service. Turns out, the app was sending personal information back to Facebook, albeit unwittingly. After a massive uproar, Zoom has removed the offending code. The issue started with Zoom using Facebook Login. The company said that they wanted to make it easy for users to log into the app, hence the Facebook login. The login feature is implemented using the Facebook SDK, which connects the users of the app to Facebook’s Graph API. Once users log in, the SDK can then share information with third parties, and it is this behaviour that has caused concern amongst users. Additionally, Zoom’s terms of service made no explicit mention that by using Facebook Login, people were consenting to their private information being shared with the social media giant. You can read more about it here.

Zoom has cemented itself as an antifragile service. According to Wikipedia, “Antifragility is a property of systems that increase in capability to thrive as a result of stressors, shocks, volatility, noise, mistakes, faults, attacks, or failures.” When there are times of distress or the market is facing some sort of problems or shortage, business or service will rise to fill the void. These services and businesses that thrive during an overall market downturn are called Antifragile. It is an interesting concept. In the trying times of the Coronavirus, we have seen a rise in demand for internet at home, OTT platforms, home delivery services, medical services, online gaming and more.

Moto Razr sale delayed due to coronavirus lockdown

Motorola has pushed the sale date of the foldable Moto Razr from April 2 to April 15 in India. The sale has been postponed due to the nation-wide lockdown imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus. The lockdown also limits e-commerce portals to deliver only essential products at the moment. This is among multiple other steps the company has taken in adherence to the lockdown orders, including shutting its factories, offices and service centres.

The lockdown imposed from March 23 will last till April 14. Post that, deliveries are expected to start normally.

The foldable Moto Razr (first impressions) is priced Rs 1,24,999 and is set to be sold via Flipkart and in other offline stores. The phone comes with the Snapdragon 710 under the hood with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The highlight is, of course, the clamshell design borrowed from the older Moto Razr series, achieved through a bendable display measuring 6.2-inches when unfolded. There’s another screen on top of the body for notifications.

“In the light of the current scenario, Motorola has decided to postpone the sale of Motorola Razr which was scheduled for 2nd April 2020 to 15th April 2020 due to the nation-wide lockdown. Keeping national interest on top, we are abiding the government rules and want our e-commerce partners to deliver essential commodities at the moment,” Motorola said in a statement.

Motorola is also offering a one-time screen replacement with the device worth Rs 7,999.

Working from home Check out these prepaid plans from Jio, Airtel and Vodafone to last the lockdown

With two more weeks of the 21-day lockdown still left, there is surging demand in internet usage among Indians. This is also the time when a majority of people working from home could be exhausting their daily data limit before the day is over. As such, there is a need for additional data while people are working from home, and telecom companies are stepping up to cater to it.

Majority of internet users in India rely on mobile data and wireless broadband for connectivity at home. The number, according to TRAI is at a whopping 642.90 million while a meagre 19.14 million use wired broadband connections. This means that a lot of professionals are using mobile data to work from home, and as a result, exhausting their data packs quickly.

Telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea anyway offer additional data via top-up plans, but now the operators are raising the data limits in the main prepaid plans as well.

Here we take a look at the most data-heavy and affordable plans to last the lockdown.

Reliance Jio

While most users subscribe to the 1GB or 2GB daily data plan, Jio also has a higher 3GB data per day plan which is quite affordable. It’s priced at Rs 349 for a 28-day validity and also offers 1000 non-Jio minutes along with 100 SMS per day.

There are also top-up data vouchers you can take advantage of. Starting from Rs 21 for 2GB (+200 minutes Non-Jio minutes), going to Rs 51 for 6GB (+500 minutes Non-Jio minutes)  and Rs 101 for 12GB (+1000 minutes Non-Jio minutes).

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea users have the best deal out of all, frankly. The operator has introduced a double data offer that literally does what it says. The base prepaid plan priced at Rs 249 now offers 3GB 4G data instead of 1.5GB data per day for 28 days. Similarly, the Rs 399 and the Rs 599 plans are also offering 3GB 4G data per day but for 56 and 84 days respectively. This also includes unlimited calling and 100 SMS per day, along with access to Vodafone Play and Zee5.

Top up plans starts from Rs 16 for 1GB data for 24 hours, Rs 48 for 3GB data, Rs 98 for 6GB data, both valid for 28 days.

Bharti Airtel

Airtel is not presently offering additional data with its plan but the operator’s prepaid plans are quite affordable. The top tier prepaid plan is priced at Rs 398 for 28 days and offers 3GB data per day along with unlimited calling and 100 SMS a day. You can also extend the validity by going for the Rs 558 plan which offers 56 days validity.

If not, you can stick to a lesser 1.5-2GB per day prepaid plan and top up with a Rs 98 voucher for 6GB of additional data or Rs 48 for 3GB.

YouTube streaming limited to 480p in India by Google

As the world grapples with social distancing, and India goes into what feels like its nth day of lockdown, YouTube has announced that they’re going to be changing the playback quality of the video playback to standard definition (SD) or more commonly known as 480p. The decision comes after Google observed a major uptake in the number of people streaming YouTube videos throughout the day.

The move comes in the wake of the fact that more people are now stuck at home, whether working or not and hence, streaming more content as a means of passing the time. Across Europe, all streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime had reduced the default streaming quality as the infrastructure came under heavy load. Google says that the kind of uptake in traffic they’re seeing on YouTube “won't break the internet,” but the company is limiting the stream quality anyway to reduce the strain on ISP and telcos.

In India, YouTube streaming has been capped at 480p, but only for mobile devices. Even if you’re connected to a home Wi-Fi network, your mobile device will not stream YouTube content in quality higher than 480p. This is strange because you can stream YouTube content in up to 4K (content willing) if you’re on a computer. In fact, if you choose to forego the YouTube app and use the browser on your phone instead, you can get a slightly higher quality stream at 720p.

According to a report by Bloomberg, there’s been a steady rise of 20 percent in online streaming since the Coronavirus outbreak. This has started to put a strain on many countries’ internet infrastructure, which has led to this move by Google.

Heres how you can play Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite from home

While all of Niantic’s games on smartphones encourage gamers to go outdoors and explore their world, the lockdown imposed upon various countries because of the coronavirus epidemic has made the game developer take a U-turn and introduce features that allow players to stay at home and play Niantic games.

The game developer is behind two popular AR-based gaming titles — Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Both these titles are being adapted to support stay-at-home gaming since it’s no longer safe to venture outside and play these games.

Some of the new features introduced to ensure you stay at home while playing includes the following —

- Niantic’s Adventure Sync function will now track indoor steps like running on a treadmill, cleaning the house or making other indoor movements. - Niantic games will encourage in-game virtual meetups and let players stay in touch without having to meet in real life. - You can soon be able to team up with friends and take on raid battles in Pokemon GO from your home. - Apart from that, Niantic is also reimagining live events (remember the Pokemon GO Fest which ended in a disaster?) to let players feel the excitement from their homes. More details will be revealed about this in the coming weeks. - Lastly, Niantic is encouraging people to virtually visit and share their memories of their favourite real-world places until they can go and visit them in person.

What's new in Pokemon GO?

That’s not all. Pokemon GO has received a bunch of new features that shouldn’t encourage you to head outdoors. That includes a new form of gameplay called Go Battle which can be played from anywhere in the world without having to go outdoors. Walking requirements have been reduced from 3KM to zero. There are deeply discounted incense and Poke Balls to let people catch more of them without travelling too far. Niantic has also increased storage to let people send and receive more gifts.

What's new in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite?

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has not been left alone either. You will now see more content around you on the map. So expect more Spell Energy, rare potions ingredients and other iconic Harry Potter content near you to help you make progress. Potion tuning has also been adjusted to have Foundables spawn directly at their house. Gifts will offer more helpful resources and you can open more gifts each day.

Step 5: Enter the recharge amount.  Step 6: Confirm Step 7: You will see the confirmation message on the screen and the relevant amount will be deducted from your account.  Step 8: you will receive the message from Jio that your recharge is successful.

The ability to recharge your Jio number via an ATM is another method to add convenience to users that want to recharge their smartphones. What isn’t clear is whether other banks will also join the effort or whether other telecom operators will add the facility as an option to let users recharge their devices. According to telecom talk, “the market data suggests that the combined number of ATMs across the nine banks is over 90,000 and thus offering customers several points for them to recharge their mobile number. State Bank of India offers the largest ATM networks in India and has over 50,000 ATMs across the country while ICICI Bank has over 15,589 ATMs. Similarly, HDFC Bank has over 14, 533 ATMs and Axis Bank has over 11,800 ATMs”.

Reliance Jio has been doing its part along with other telecom operators in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jio is offering new customers broadband connections at 10Mbps wherever possible without charging any service charge while existing customers get double the data. You can read more about it here. Other broadband providers are also doing their part. You can learn more about it here.

Coronavirus effect: TRAI asks Jio, Airtel, BSNL and Vodafone Idea to extend validity of prepaid plans

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has asked telecom service providers including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and BSNL to extend the validity of prepaid plans amidst the Coronavirus lockdown in India.

TRAI has asked telcos to ensure uninterrupted voice and data services for all users by increasing prepaid plan validity. In a letter dated March 29 to telecom companies, the telecom authority asked companies to take every measure to allow prepaid subscribers to continue enjoying unlimited services during the period of lockdown.

TRAI has also asked for details from telecom providers on the measures they are taking to ensure service availability to customers on priority. More than 90 per cent of all subscribers in India use prepaid services. There are over 800 million active prepaid users.

“Though the telecommunication services have been considered as essential services and thus granted an exception from closing down. However, lockdown may adversely affect the working of customer service centres/point of sale locations,” TRAI said in a notification.

TRAI reasoned that because of the lockdown, subscribers who wish to top up their balances or wish to extend their plans may be unable to do so because of disruption in services. Extending validity until the lockdown lifts can help provide relief.

Tackling coronavirus: Bluetooth-based contact tracking can be a good way to curb contagion

While there’s neither a vaccine nor a cocktail of antibiotics that can successfully cure a patient of COVID-19, it’s not entirely impossible to stop the Coronavirus epidemic. The key to curbing the contagion that has now infected 199 countries is to conduct extreme contact tracing. Health officials not only need to find and isolate infected patients, but also those who came in contact with that person. The Ebola virus outbreak that occurred in 2016 in Africa was contained using this method and experts believe, the novel Coronavirus can also be contained in a similar way.

Tracing who the infected person came in contact with can get quite cumbersome, especially in a country like India with one of the highest population densities in the world. Officials may not be able find out the exact number of people who came in contact with an infected person by interviewing and interrogating. It’s also noted that nearly half the transmission occurs before the person even starts showing symptoms. The virus could be spreading for days before anyone can even realise they are infected.

Modern technology may have a solution, albeit with a big caveat.

Pandemic researchers across the world have claimed that tapping into cellular services can help track the contagion and warn people who may have been exposed. Some have propagated using GPS services to track large gatherings of people, while some are relying on Bluetooth technology to identify smartphones (and their owners) who may have come in close contact with people infected by the SAR-COV-2 virus.

And that’s exactly what GOQII, the India-based fitness tracking and preventive healthcare app has set out to do. Currently in beta testing, the GOQII fitness tracking app has launched a “Contact Tracking” feature that relies on Bluetooth to find out the number of devices you have come in close proximity with. This feature will help “track every movement, activity and also track those who have been in close contact with them and this app feature will effectively help in social distancing as is recommended by the WHO,” writes Anusha Subramanian on the GOQII blog. Anusha is a two-time award winning journalist and a health and fitness enthusiast.

Implementing Bluetooth-based contact tracking

The contact tracking feature on the app can be used to track your movement and activity to ensure prevention and quick detection of virus carries. It’s essentially self tracking with Bluetooth aiding the memory. For instance, you can track cab drivers, e-commerce delivery agents, and other people you come in contact with. This is important because if you become infected or someone you may have come in contact with become infected, you will be able to trace it yourself and let the authorities know.

The feature presently lets you store your body temperature, COVID-19 symptoms that you may be experiencing, food and activity log with location, log contacts, cab driver and delivery agent details who have served you. By using Bluetooth on your smartphone, you can easily recall who you came in contact with. The app stores data of nearby Bluetooth devices with time to help find out potential patients.

The real benefit of this feature can only be realised once a lot of people start using it. The contacted list has to be uploaded (with the consent of the user) and will be mapped with the database of other users. A large percentage of the population has to be using it to make it more effective.

Bluetooth over GPS?

GOQII is not the only app in India that’s trying to track secondary and tertiary SARS-COV-2 infections. The Indian Government itself have come out with an app that tracks user location every one hour and warns if you have come in contact with a COVID-19 patient. However, GPS might not be accurate enough to detect close proximity with people. Bluetooth, in this case, helps.

There’s some history to back up the claim as well. Singapore’s health department in particular is using Bluetooth-based contact tracking to perform real-time tracing. People are asked to join the Trace Together app and to keep their Bluetooth on. Upon encountering a COVID-19 positive person within a two meter proximity, the app will set off an alert all users for 30 minutes.

These are extraordinary times, but should we give up digital privacy?

If not for this unprecedented situation, making an app that tracks people using GPS and Bluetooth would have faced severe backlash. But these are not normal times. Yes, you may expose your location to other people or even give up some data about your Bluetooth device (and yourself) in the process, but experts believe that if helps keep the contagion under check, it’s a necessary evil.

“We don’t live in a culture of public trust when it comes to data. We live in this age that has been called the age of surveillance capitalism, where.. our data is abused and exploited,” a ScienceMag article quoted David Leslie, an ethicist at Alan Turing Institute as saying.

The biggest example of this is China. The country known for its widespread surveillance on citizens deployed its mass surveillance tools to classify individuals by their health status and restrict their movements. Israel too has reportedly repurposed its spying infrastructure to trace contact. We are definitely in untested waters here, but these aren’t normal times to begin with.

Having said that, GOQII claims the app does not share user data immediately. It’s up to the user to provide consent and there too, the user can control whether they want to share their logs publicly, or with their friends or keep only to themselves.

Zoom stops sharing data with Facebook, issues apology

The time of lockdown has prompted people to turn to video conferencing as a means of conducting day-to-day business. Schools and business alike are using video conferencing in order to try and bring some semblance of normalcy to their operations and one app that has really come to the forefront is Zoom. However, as with everything that has ever been popular, people were quick to find problems with Zoom.

According to Zoom's statement to Motherboard, the app did not share any sensitive information, like user names, emails and phone numbers, but "included data about users’ devices such as the mobile OS type and version, the device time zone, device OS, device model and carrier, screen size, processor cores, and disk space". Since then Zoom has pushed out an update for the iOS version of their app, which no longer uses Facebook SDK, cutting off the sharing of data. Zoom says that even after the removal of the Facebook SDK, users will be able to log in with their Facebook accounts if they have one. The company has also issued an apology on the matter.

Coronavirus effect: Delhi University moves towards online education by integrating Google Classroom and Hangouts

As the Coronavirus rips through India and with the entire country in a state of lockdown, major services and institutions remain closed or partially functioning. With a large number of people moving their work online, it was only natural that educational institutions also shifted their focus to a more flexible, digital platform. Academic institutions all over the country are making their way online, offering classes over the internet. Delhi University, among others, has now made the shift towards digital learning and even integrating Google Services to the University’s educational systems.

This shift in society has brought about the innovative use of technology as a way to communicate and learn. As we move towards an online-based society for the next two to three weeks, services like Zoom and Skype are also finding their way into the educational system, offering video-conferencing and other options to connect teachers with their students.

According to a report by NDTV, teachers in Delhi University will find the integrated services on the three-dot icon on the top-right corner on their University accounts.

The two main services used as of now are Google Classroom and Hangouts. Classroom functions much like a normal classroom, except online, where teachers can share documents such as pfd, doc, ppt and more. They can also create assignments, conduct tests online and can even create multiple classrooms as per their daily schedule. It takes a little work to get things going but it looks like the service will now be used as an educational tool in DU.

Hangouts functions much like a live video conference between teachers and students with video sharing options and more. It’s simple and works in conjunction with Classroom for a more comprehensive educational experience. Delhi University has also provided a set of tutorials for teachers and students just to make sure that all the bases are covered.

This is the right step for educators as the Coronavirus outbreak has forced us to look for more innovative and cost-saving methods for our society to keep functioning and moving towards an online education model is the correct move.

OnePlus Z could be the official name of the alleged OnePlus 8 Lite

While the OnePlus 8 series is likely to debut next month, the company is expected to release a lighter variant of the devices soon after. It was tipped to be named OnePlus 8 Lite. However, the latest development claims that the OnePlus X is all set to be succeeded by the OnePlus Z. The information comes from tipster Max Weinbach who leaked plenty of information about the Galaxy S20 series and Galaxy Z Flip before their official announcement.

As per the tipster, OnePlus is soon going to revamp the older OnePlus X under a new series. Further, he revealed that the phone could arrive with the name “OnePlus Z”, and not as OnePlus 8 Lite.

The OnePlus Z is tipped to sport a 90Hz refresh rate 6.4-inch AMOLED display. OnePlus is said to use a MediaTek chipset for the first time. It may be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 SoC. The device is said to come with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

As for the optics, the leaked renders have shown a triple rear camera setup. It may sport a 48MP primary camera alongside a 16MP and 12MP sensors for ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lens respectively. The OnePlus Z could pack a 4000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging. Further, it is rumored to be made available in two variants: 8GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB.

It may be priced at 400 GBP, which is around 511 USD and approximately Rs 37,500. That is actually a high asking price for a Lite model especially when the OnePlus 7T is now selling for Rs 34,999 in India. However, it is highly likely for OnePlus to price it lower in India than the international markets.

According to previous rumours, OnePlus Z will be made available in India and other markets by July 2020. Hence, it may launch after the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, which are rumored to be launched in mid-April.

Coronavirus effect: WhatsApp to limit videos on status to 15 seconds in India to save bandwidth

With over a billion users around the world, WhatsApp is easily one of the most used messaging apps today. And, in the midst of a worldwide lockdown to curb the menace of the Coronavirus outbreak, the usage has certainly spiked up. Indians, in particular, love using the app to stay in touch, send forwards, share memes and videos. That also leads to consuming a lot of bandwidth, something that we are being told is constrained with so many people staying home and tuning in to streaming services and playing online games.

Previously, YouTube, Netflix and other streaming websites agreed to cut down their video quality to free up more bandwidth. Now, WhatsApp is also joining the league by limiting status videos to 15 seconds. You were allowed to post a 30-second video up on your status previously, but now WhatsApp has cut it down to just 15 seconds to reduce bandwidth consumption.

The information was shared by the folks over at WABetaInfo on Twitter. The tweet read, “You can no longer send videos to WhatsApp status if they are longer than 16 seconds: only videos having a duration of 15 seconds will be allowed. This is happening in India and it’s probably an initiative to reduce the traffic on the server infrastructures.”

ANNOUNCEMENT: You can no longer send videos to WhatsApp Status if they are longer than 16 seconds: only videos having a duration of 15 seconds will be allowed. This is happening in India and it's probably an initiative to reduce the traffic on the server infrastructures.

— WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) March 28, 2020

The new update will impact all users in India, no matter if you are using a stable version or a beta version. But it’s expected that this change is only temporary till the lockdown lifts and strain on the bandwidth comes down.

Just to refresh, WhatsApp Status is basically Instagram Stories for the platform. It replaced text-based status messages (they’re still there but with a different name) to let users upload photos and videos to share with friends. The content disappears automatically after 24 hours. And by the looks of it, if cutting down the video length to 15 seconds will let many others enjoy the fruits of the internet. It’s just a small luxury to give up in the larger scheme of things.

Coronavirus effect: Wistron Corp speeding up move of iPhone production out of China to India and Vietnam

With the world turned upside down by the coronavirus, it looks like even some of the biggest companies and manufacturers are facing their fair share of problems. Apple being one of them. One of Apple’s manufacturing partners, Winstrol Corp., has said that half the company's capacity would be located outside China in about a year’s time. The company had already started moving production out of China since the trade war between the US and China reached a boiling point last year. The outbreak of the Covid-19 virus has sped up the process.

Other companies such as Foxconn, Inventec Corp., and Pegatron Corp could also end up making decisions that could effectively change the supply chain in the long term. Wistron Corp. is actually looking at India as the next manufacturing hub, as well as looking at Vietnam and Mexico as alternatives. The company has set aside a billion dollars for this particular expansion.

Pegatron is also looking at expanding it’s manufacturing sites to other countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and even India as potential countries. The iPhone assembler also said that it has purchased land in northern Taiwan and intends to set up a plant there as well. Even the mighty Foxconn is looking at diversifying their manufacturing sites as well. The folly of placing all your eggs in one basket is now coming back to bite these companies.

Who knows how the virus will affect the world in the coming years but even in just a few short months, the Coronavirus outbreak has shown us that we are teetering on the edge of civilization.

Coronavirus effect: Google wont play an April Fools Day joke this year

Since 2004, Google has been pranking the world every year with creative jokes, websites and fake product launches keeping us guessing whether the company is serious or joking. After all, the tech giant did launch Gmail on April 1, 2004 offering users 1GB of storage space, a feature unheard of in the past. Before that, between 1998 and 2004, we got the occasional April fools prank here and there. However, the company will not be parking us this year, breaking its 16-year streak and honestly, that makes us very sad. This information comes from an email obtained by Business Insider.

The email reads, “This year, we’re going to take the year off from [April Fools’ Day] out of respect for all those fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Our highest goal right now is to be helpful to people, so let’s save the jokes for next April, which will undoubtedly be a whole lot brighter than this one. We’ve already stopped any centralized April Fools efforts but realize there may be smaller projects within teams that we don’t know about. Please suss out those efforts and make sure your teams pause on any jokes they may have planned — internally or externally.”

Following Google, there were a lot of other companies that took to the internet to make jokes on April Fools day. You can check out the April fools jokes played by companies in 2019 here.

Coronavirus effect: Reliance Jio and Airtel release personal risk-assessment tools for COVID-19

With companies struggling to cope with the consequences of the Coronavirus outbreak, there are some that are doing their part to help with the crisis. Reliance Jio and Airtel have just launched two tools that will help with a COVID-19 self-diagnosis. These tools come at a time when many are worried and this could give them a measure of help during this trying time. These tools will help users by asking them to answer a set of questions and will then determine whether the person is at risk of contracting the virus.

You can access the tool from the MyJio app or you can head on the dedicated website that has been launched specifically for this particular tool. The tool will deliver a set of questions that determine your travel history and if you’ve come in contact with anyone who’s been tested for the Coronavirus. Taking all the information in two, the tool will then let you know how at-risk you actually are based on low, moderate or high inferences. You can also access national and state helplines along with a list of test centres in a particular state and even has an FAQ section.

Airtel’s tool is developed in conjunction with Apollo Hospitals and also asks similar questions and assesses the risk level that you possess. You can check out the tool on the Airtel Thanks App or you could head to the official dedicated website as well.

If you think that you may be at risk of contracting the virus, it would help if you checked out these two tools. Until then, stay safe and stay tuned to Digit for more tech news and reviews.

Google services including Youtube and Gmail suffer temporary outages

As the country enters its fourth day of the nationwide lockdown, internet services are essential to how we communicate and live our lives. But, services like Youtube, Gmail and other Google services were wracked by a few outages. This comes at a time when google’s entire infrastructure is being swamped with a record number of users because of the unique situation we find ourselves in.

Urs Holzle, who oversees Google’s data centres said that the problem was not virus-related or even any sort of overload but more from a failed router in Atlanta. He tweeted, “This wasn’t related to traffic levels or any kind of overload, our network is not stressed by Covid-19. Things should be back to normal now.” So, if you were worried that the internet was shut down. Fear not, as it seems to just be a router issue. Holzle also said that this was a case of systems being overloaded so that theory goes out the window as well.

As more and more people are accessing the internet at home, it becomes imperative that these services remain on to, at the very least, keep society in order. The surge in traffic is seen on almost every platform as the entire world is gripped by the fear of the Coronavirus.

Stay tuned to Digit for more tech news and reviews.

Windows 10 March 2020 update could stop your PC from accessing the Internet

If you are a Windows 10 user, then there is some bad news for you, especially if you have left your system to auto-update. The March update comes with a problem that restricts apps and software from accessing the internet. A fix for this is that you can restart the computer, but don't expect an update from Microsoft for the same until April 2020. This issue is a really bad one to have especially since the COVID-19 outbreak, everyone is working from home.

According to Microsoft, “Devices using a manual or auto-configured proxy, especially with a virtual private network (VPN), might show limited or no internet connection status in the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) in the notification area.  This might happen when connected or disconnected to a VPN or after changing state between the two. Devices with this issue might also have issues reaching the internet using applications that use WinHTTP or WinInet. Examples of apps that might be affected on devices in this state are as follows but not limited to Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office, Office365, Outlook, Internet Explorer 11, and some version of Microsoft Edge.”

According to the statement, if you use Microsoft apps like Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office, Office365, Outlook, Internet Explorer 11 and Edge, you may not be able to connect to the internet using these applications. It is not limited to these applications and could cause a connection issue with other applications as well. As a workaround for the issue, Microsoft says, “You might be able to mitigate the issue by restarting your device.” This has gone back to the old days of PC advice where before even checking your system the technician asks, “have you tried switching it off and on again?”

Microsoft has said that the fix will come early April, but with everyone around the world working from home, we hope it doesn't get delayed. If you have not updated your Windows 10 PC, we suggest you hold off from doing so.

In other news related to Microsoft, the source code for the Xbox Series X (Microsoft’s upcoming gaming console) was leaked online along with details of AMD’s current and next-gen GPUs. you can read more about it here.

AMD current and future GPU including Xbox Series X graphics source code stolen and leaked online

In December 2019, AMD was contacted by someone who claimed to have the source code for the company’s current and future graphics products. This included information about the Xbox Series X graphics source code. AMD’s statement on the subject reads, “At AMD, data security and the protection of our intellectual property are a priority. In December 2019, we were contacted by someone who claimed to have test files related to a subset of our current and future graphics products, some of which were recently posted online, but have since been taken down. While we are aware the perpetrator has additional files that have not been made public, we believe the stolen graphics IP is not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products. We are not aware of the perpetrator possessing any other AMD IP. We are working closely with law enforcement officials and other experts as a part of an ongoing criminal investigation.”

According to the statement, AMD is aware that the perpetrator has additional files that are yet to be made public. However, they go on to reassure that the stolen graphics IP is “not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products”. The person who stole the code got in touch with TorrentFreak and said that “if they don't get a buyer for the remainder of the code, they will dump the whole lot online”. The hacker claimed that the information was worth $100 million. If the hacker doesn't get a buyer for the code, they claim to dump everything online. The information about AMD’s graphics cards appeared on GitHub which is owned by Microsoft but has since been removed.

According to the hacker, “The source code was unexpectedly achieved from an unprotected computer//server through some exploits. I later found out about the files inside it. They weren’t even protected properly or even encrypted with anything which is just sad,” the hacker said. “I haven’t spoken to AMD about it because I am pretty sure that instead of accepting their mistake and moving on, they will try to sue me. So why not just leak it to everyone?”

How this will affect AMD’s future RDNA 2 based GPU’s which are expected soon and the Xbox Series X set to launch at the end of 2020 is something only time will tell. Microsoft has been bold in showing not only the design of the upcoming Xbox series X but also the specifications powering it and giving select journalists a close look at the console. You can check out the details of the Xbox Series X here. It is surprising that details of the PS5 GPU weren't leaked as the PS5’s graphics processor is also based on RDNA 2. You can check out the details of the PS5 specs and how it compares to the Xbox Series X here.

World Health Organization to launch Coronavirus COVID-19 tips app for iOS and Android

The Coronavirus COVID-19 global cases keep rising along with the death toll. People are not only battling the virus but also misinformation spreading about the disease. A lot of organizations including Google, Microsoft and more have taken steps to ensure the right kind of information is being circulated, educating people about the virus. The government of India has also launched a WhatsApp chatbot that provides relevant information about the virus and you can check out the details of the chatbot here.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is also launching an iOS, Android and Web App to educate people and provide tips in regards to the Coronavirus. Aside from telling you to wash your hands and maintain social distancing, the app will essentially give you the same information found on the WHO WhatsApp Chatbot. According to 9to5Google, the app “was originally proposed by a team of volunteer experts that have formed what they’re calling the “WHO Covid App Collective.” The team consists of former Google and Microsoft employees as well as WHO advisors and ambassadors, along with other industry experts”.

According to the source, the WHO MyHealth app will offer notifications and information specific to your location. So we can expect some India specific information to come via the app. The app is also expected to have “self-triage” tools to help diagnose whether the symptoms you have match those of COVID-19.

According to 9to5Google, “On an even grander scale, there are ambitions for those who have been directly affected by COVID-19 to offer the WHO with their Android or iPhone location history in an effort to perform “contact tracing,” to better understand the spread of the virus. However, given the obvious privacy concerns with sharing in-depth location history, it remains to be seen whether this feature will actually launch.”

Because of the global pandemic of COVID-19, a lot of technology events like Microsoft Build, GDC, MWC, Google I/O and many more have been cancelled. You can check out the complete list of cancelled events here. A lot of telecom and broadband operators like Reliance, MTNL, BSNL and more are doing their part to ensure that those working from home in this time of crisis can do so effectively and efficiently.

Googles true wireless Pixel Buds expected to launch in the first half of 2020

Google Showed off their true wireless Pixel Buds in 2019 and they were expected to launch in the first half of 2020. Since Google I/O 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak it was speculated that the headphones would be delayed. However, information circulating the internet suggests that they could launch in the first half of 2020. According to 9to5Google, the Google Pixel Buds have passed through the FCC listing. Every consumer electronic that launches in the US must pass through the FCC certification before being made available to the public. Two listings have appeared on the website, G1007, and G1008. According to the source, “These model numbers could correspond to the left and right earbuds, or the earbuds jointly and the charging case separately. Both are rated with the same Bluetooth frequencies, though it’s possible that the case could communicate directly with a paired phone”.

Coming to the features of the Pixel Buds, the headset has hands-free access to the Google Assistant, which can be used to send texts, get directions or use google translate. The new buds are also said to feature long-range Bluetooth connection that can connect with a device up to three rooms away when inside or across a football field when outside. Huawei launches P40 series with major camera updates and a quad-curve display

Despite the Coronavirus shutdown and the trade ban by the U.S., Huawei has gone ahead and announced the P40 series of smartphones. The series includes three phones, the Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro and the Huawei P40 Pro+. As always, the camera remains the primary driving force behind the P40 series, but this time around, there’s more than just the cameras to lure potential customers.

All three Huawei P40 series smartphones are powered by the Kirin 990 5G chipset and Huawei has clarified that there will be no 4G version of the phones. All three smartphones also come with 8GB RAM, although they do offer varying amounts of onboard UFS 3.0 storage. All three phones still don’t come with a microSD card slot, instead, you get Huawei’s proprietary nano memory card slot, which takes up one of the SIM card slots.

Huawei P40 series

The main highlight of the Huawei P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ is the impressive camera stack. The P40 offers a triple camera setup, while the P40 Pro comes with quad cameras and the P40 Pro+ comes with 5 cameras. If you thought this was overkill, just continue reading their specs. All three smartphones come with a 50-megapixel primary camera featuring an RYYB sensor and an aperture of f/1.9. The telephoto camera on the P40 is an 8-megapixel shooter offering 3x optical zoom (80mm) and an aperture of f/2.4. The third camera is an ultra-wide shooter (17mm) with a 16-megapixel sensor and an aperture of f/2.2. The Huawei P40 Pro steps things up a bit with a 40-megapixel sensor for the ultra-wide lens (18mm) with a massive f/1.8 aperture. The telephoto camera comes with a 12-megapixel RYYB sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens with an aperture of f/3.4. This is the same configuration from the older P30 Pro, except, the sensor here is an RYYB sensor instead of an RGGB sensor., the fourth camera on the P40 Pro is a depth-sensing Time of Flight camera. The Huawei P40 Pro+ is where overkill steps in. The ultra-wide- and wide-angle cameras remain the same as on the P40 Pro, but the P40 Pro+ gets two telephoto lenses instead of just one. There’s a 3x telephoto lens (80mm) with an aperture of f/2.4 and a 10x periscope style optical zoom telephoto lens with an aperture of f/4.4. Both the lenses are paired with their own respective 8-megapixel RGGB sensors. The fifth camera here is again a Time of Flight sensor. All the camera specs are summarized in the table below. On the Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro+, the ultra-wide camera sports a 40-megapixel sensor measuring 1/1.54 inches diagonally, which Huawei says is capable of binning 16 pixels into 1 for an effective 4.48μm pixel pitch. This, however, is only limited to the video mode.

Besides the cameras, the P40 series seems to be getting a major upgrade in the display department as well. All three phones come with what Huawei calls Quad-Curve Overflow Display. Huawei likens the curvature of the screen to that of water that’s formed a curve on the edge of an overflowing cup. Design philosophies aside, the P40 comes with a 6.1-inch 60Hz display, the P40 Pro and the P40 Pro+ come with a 6.58-inch 90Hz display. The resolution also differs across the three phones, with the P40 sporting a 2340x1080 display while the Pro models come with 2640x1200 display. The Pro models also come with IP68 ratings while the P40 loses out on the rating. The P40 sports a 3800mAh battery while the Pro models come with a 4200mAh battery, with the P40 Pro+ also sporting 40W fast wireless charging.

Huawei P40 Pro+ Duo

In terms of colours, the P40 and the P40 Pro come in five colours; Deep Sea Blue, Blue Gold, Silver Frost, Ice White and Black. The P40 Pro+ comes in a ceramic finish, and hence, is only available in white and black. In terms of pricing and availability, the Huawei P40 will start at €799, P40 Pro at €999 and the P40 Pro+ at €1399. All phones go on sale starting April 7 in select markets, India not being one of them.

Dells new app lets you mirror your iPhone screen on PC with keyboard and mouse support

While investing all-out in an Apple ecosystem always reaps the best rewards if you are an iPhone user, Dell is here to change that. The latest Dell PCs can now mirror the screen of an iPhone using Dell’s Mobile Connect app.

The latest update to the iOS app brings support for screen mirroring for iPhones, letting you use the keyboard and mouse to control the device. The app also lets users drag and drop photos and videos to transfer between two devices.

Furthermore, the Dell Mobile Connect App will let you send SMS messages without having to keep the iPhone open in front of you. And all this happens wirelessly.

The app was first announced at this year’s CES and aims to bring iPhone support in line with Android on Windows devices from Dell. Notably, screen mirroring for Android devices have been there for a few years now. Yet, there’s still not much parity between the two platforms.

For instance, file transfer is only limited to photos and videos from iPhones for now, while Android devices support music and document transfer as well. Dell also added that Android users can now send MMS messages using the feature.

Dell isn’t the only PC-maker working on letting you Windows devices to control smartphones. Microsoft’s Your Phone app also works similarly, regardless of the manufacturer of the PC. The Your Phone app lets you route calls from your phone to PC and also lets you mirror the screen apart from letting you sync and transfer files.

Huawei also has a similar service that works with its tablets but that’s again locked down to Huawei devices only.

Apple also unveiled the Handoff feature which lets you resume tasks left on your iPhone from you MacBook, opening up interoperability between iPhones, iPads and Macs.

The Dell Mobile Connect will require a Dell PC from 2018 or later while the iPhone needs to be running on iOS 11 or above. So far, Dell has enabled support on its XPS range, Inspiron, Vostro, Alienware and G series devices. The update will roll out in phases over the week.

Apple releases security focused iOS 1246 for older iOS devices, co

Apple just pushed out the hotly anticipated iOS 13.4 and iPadOS 13.4, which is compatible with a staggering number of devices, going back all the way to iPhone SE/iPhone 6s, devices that came out back in 2015. Apple may not be releasing the feature update for devices older than the iPhone 6s, but the company sure hasn’t forgotten them. Alongside iOS 13.4, Apple is also rolling out iOS 12.4.6 for iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and a few other devices.

The update does not include any new features to the older devices but does bring essential security update patches against common vulnerabilities. The iPhone 5s is the oldest device on the compatibility list, having launched in 2013. Security patches for old devices have been a topic of great concern lately, with the rampancy in malware spread increasing rapidly. When it comes to the Android ecosystem, a report recently found that nearly a billion devices have stopped receiving security update patches, leaving them vulnerable to modern-day exploits. Most of the devices comprising this number are more than 3 years old. There’s also the issue of most Android OEMs promising OS updates only for two iterations, anything beyond which is not guaranteed. Apple, on the other hand, has shown that they do care about older devices.

The trend of supporting as many devices as possible started with iOS 12, the first in the long list of iOS updates that tried to be inclusive, rather than exclusionary. When Apple announced iOS 11, it was compatible with all iPhones between the iPhone 5s and iPhone X. iOS 12 at launch did not drop the iPhone 5s from the support list, making it the oldest device to be supported by the OS. The iPhone 5s may not have received iOS 13, but it did receive the latest security patch from Apple.
