Xiaomi could launch Mi laptops on June 11 in India

Xiaomi is all set to launch its range of Mi laptops for the very first time in India and the launch event could be scheduled for June 11, if the latest rumour is to be believed. Xiaomi has officially started teasing about the Mi laptops for the past week and even gave a shout-out to other laptop brands in India including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus and Acer.

According to an exclusive report by 91Mobiles that cites popular leakster Ishan Agarwal, Xiaomi could launch the RedmiBook 13 laptop in India under the Mi banner. As it is the company’s first laptop launch in India, it seems like Xiaomi wants to kick off its run in the laptop market by rebranding a RedmiBook laptop. While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, the report states that the 2019 version of RedmiBook 13 is likely to be announced in India.

Xiaomi has also started teasing some of the key features of the upcoming laptop and there could be more than one notebook that the company brings to India. This has been hinted by Aggarwal, who in a separate tweet, indicated that two notebooks going by the model number XMA1901 and XMA1904 has been certified by the Bluetooth SIG. Interestingly, XMA1904 model hasn’t been announced in China yet and the XMA1901 coincides with the RedmiBook 14 from China.

While the specific details on the laptops are currently awaited, the upcoming laptops by Xiaomi are expected to support 1C fast charging solution that can recharge the laptop from 0-50 per cent in 35 minutes. Let’s take a brief look at the RedmiBook 13 which is rumoured to be rebranded as a Mi laptop for India.

WeTransfer has now been banned by the Indian Government

Well, it looks like the Indian government is at it again. This time file-sharing website, WeTransfer has now been banned in India. Why? Well, it’s because of ‘national security’ and ‘public interest’. Authorized by the Department of Telecommunications, the order was passed on May 18, 2020. The order was sent to Internet Service Providers and stated that WeTransfer and two other links were to be banned under grounds of ‘national security’ and public interest’.

Currently, it still available on FusionNet, ACT and Airtel networks but it has been cut off from Reliance Jio networks. We could see other ISPs banning the website shortly. WeTransfer is a website that allows users to share large files of up to 2GB for free with their contacts and such. Higher data caps are available when you purchase the paid version of the website. But, alas, Indians will not be able to use the service any longer. Even though the government has given a reason for the ban, it’s still rather vague and not very clear why this happened.

Banning websites in India isn’t a new development as the government has already instituted a ban on adult-oriented websites in the past and many more instances of banning have implemented on the country. In fact, VPN downloads have seen a rise of 405% since the government decided to ban adult websites. You can read more about that story here. The government has also banned games like PUBG Mobile for CRPF troops. You can read more about that here.

Googles SODAR tool aims to help Android users maintain social distancing

Google has released a new tool that is aimed at helping people maintain social distancing. The tool is currently only available on Android and uses the phone’s camera to visualise a white circle around the user via Augmented reality (AR). This circle has a radius of 2m around the user. “This experiment uses WebXR to visualise 2-metre social-distancing guidelines in your environment,” the website states.

How to use SODAR

In order to use the tool, users must head to https://ift.tt/2XAsO64 from their Android phones while using the Google Chrome browser. Then they need to allow the required permissions and then point the camera at the ground in order for the tool to get its bearings straight. Once done, the tool will project a 2m circle around the user, which can be used to ensure social distancing.

Google is also working with Apple to create a system for contact tracing. The API is now available and Switzerland became the first country to use it to create own contact tracing app called SwissCovid. he app is presently in pilot testing and will be used by the EPFL employees, ETH Zurich, the Army and some hospitals and government agencies. Due to privacy features added to the API by Google and Apple, the SwissCovid app cannot track user location.

Of course, it already has developed its own contact tracing app called Aarogya Setu. To know the fundamental difference in how Aarogya Setu and SwissCovid work, click here.

Call of Duty: Mobile shows off new Battle Royale map expansion, teases addition of tanks, new boss and more

Call of Duty: Mobile has started teasing its next major update, specifically the expansion to its battle royale map. While the developers had hinted at the expansion earlier, this time they have pretty much showcased the new version of the Isolated map as well as hinted at a couple of new things that players might expect.

The new map will be an expansion of the current map along the North and North-Eastern borders, It will add new locations like Harbor, Sanatarium, Black Market, Ski Town, Heat Overgrown and Downtown. The new map seems to offer a snowy theme North and North-East, with more urban locations towards the West.

Over on Reddit, the developers said that the new map will feature “new areas to explore, loot, and fight over in the next update, but there are also interactive areas to utilize, new enemies, to find, and new vehicles to master.” They also posted an image that teased new additions to the map along with a bunch more stuff that players can expect.

Most notable of the new additions seem to be a tank. It should e noted that while PUBG Mobile to has a tank-like vehicle in the form of the BRDM-2, that vehicle does not have a turret and isn’t weaponised. The tank being added to Call of Duty: Mobile does seem to have a turret, which should make it a formidable opponent for players.    There are also some subtler references in the image. There is a sketch of a giant zombie-like creature with a butcher’s knife. This may allude to a new boss in the upcoming map. There is a note that reads, “NOVA-6 shipment stolen.” This may be hinting that the lethal gas grenade may be making its way to multiplayer. A couple of weeks back, the developers did release a teaser that showed the new Rust map being covered in green gas.

A few weeks ago, French security researcher Robert Baptiste who goes by the pseudonym Elliot Alderson (a character from the TV show Mr Robot) posted a tweet saying that Aarogya Setu has a few flaws that may lead to a leak in the information collected. After that kerfluffle, the government has now decided to make Aarogya Setu open source. This essentially means that anyone can now inspect and check the source code for the app and make necessary changes where they see fit. This was a necessary move for the government as the public backlash getting worse.

Researchers who do find bugs in the app will be asked to responsibly disclose those vulnerabilities and even get paid for it. The government has also laid down a few guidelines for people to follow. Basically, the reported vulnerability should only be present in the Aarogya Setu app or its source code or back-end server. They further added that the bug or vulnerability should be able to be exploited by “an unrooted phone running a version of Android supported by Aarogya Setu, with ADB Disabled and with all default Android security features in place.”

In other Aaryoga Setu news, the app is now mandatory for people who are flying. You can read more about that here. There has been a new contact-tracing app called SwissCovid which is based on Google and Apple’s UPI as well, you can check out how it compares to our own Aarogya Setu app here.

Garena Free Fires next major update will bring a new weapon, Purgatory map and game modes

Garena has released patch notes for the next major Free Fire update and it looks like players will see a lot of new additions and features. This includes a new weapon, a returning map, as well as a new character and pet. The update is expected to be available in India on June 4.

The developers also seem to be taking strong steps against hackers. “Ever since April, we started to take strong actions against hackers by banning their accounts and devices from playing Free Fire ever again. However, we’re not going to stop here. In this patch, we’re adding new anti-hack systems into our game to ensure that no players are getting an edge by using third-party programs to assist them. The Dev team would like to remind all players that we have a zero-tolerance policy against hackers. When players are banned from using unofficial third-party programs, we will not lift those bans under any circumstances, any time,” the developers state in their patch notes. This comes a few weeks after two ‘professional gamers’ from Entity Gaming and TSG Army were banned for using hacks.

Changes to Clash Squad

Clash Squad will see the addition of the Kalahari map to the matchmaking pool. There will also be a new leaderboard for Kills and Winrate as well as a Career performance page for Clash Squad in a player’s profile. Further, players who leave in the middle of Clash Squad matches too often will be temporarily banned. In the event a part does leave in the middle of a match, he/she will be replaced by a bot. Those who manage to reach Gold III during the season will receive the Golden Eagle weapon.

Return of Purgatory, the addition of new weapons and gameplay changes

A few months back, Garena replaced the Purgatory map with Kalahari. However, it looks the map will be making a comeback in this update. However, the map will be removed from Rush Hour.

The VSS will now offer greater bleeding damage, while the Kar98 sees an increase in the duration between shots. The SKS sniper rifle also sees buffs to damage, rate of fire and armour penetration, while the SVD gets buffs to damage and armour penetration. Other weapons to get buffs and debuffs include the M1887 and M14.

Xbox Series X backward compatibility: Expect some serious upscaling chops

Microsoft’s next-generation console —the Xbox Series X — already looks like a powerhouse when you consider the specifications of the machine. Microsoft's deep dive back in March gave us a sneak peek at a few neat features like Quick Resume and better colours for backward compatible games in action. It looks like Microsoft wants to “up” your gaming experience by not only making games run faster but look better, all without any developer support - a concept that's been restricted to the PC space so far. The company has announced additional details about how backward compatibility will work on the new console. Let's break down what Microsoft has just revealed.

“With more than 100,000 hours of playtesting already completed, thousands of games are already playable on Xbox Series X today, from the biggest blockbusters to cult classics and fan favorites,” says Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management for Xbox Series X. This means that if you have a large catalogue of Xbox One, Xbox 360, and even the original Xbox games lying around, you will more than likely be able to jump back into those experiences with the new console.

Ronald goes on to say, “Backwards compatible games run natively on the Xbox Series X hardware, running with the full power of the CPU, GPU, and the SSD. No boost mode, no downclocking, the full power of the Xbox Series X for each and every backward compatible game.” The no boost mode, no downclocking does look like a jab at Sony, but the thing to note here is that you will be able to leverage the power of the Xbox Series X to play games that are more than 15 years old. Microsoft already highlighted this in the past, but they have reiterated that some games will be enhanced to HDR, even 4K in some cases, to give you a more immersive feel when playing age-old games. This is great as HDR is fast becoming a standard feature with new TVs and it will be a whole new experience to see a classic game in this new light.

One of the most interesting things that Jason Ronald says is, “We are also creating whole new classes of innovations including the ability to double the frame rate of a select set of titles from 30 fps to 60 fps or 60 fps to 120 fps”. Yes, 120fps on games sounds like a dream. We have seen games like the Batman Arkham franchise for the Xbox One and PS4 with its uncapped frame rate do a decent job on the One X and PS4 Pro and the ability to play a game like Halo 2, Gears of War or even Alan Wake at a higher frame rate will be a great experience.

Despite the fact that Unreal Engine 5 is showing us what the future of gaming will like on the next-gen console, Microsoft is pouring a lot of hard work and effort into ensuring that you not only have a large library of games to look forward to on your new console, but you also have a huge library of games to get started on the console from the get-go.

Finally, gone will be the days when one has two console generations sitting under the TV for the first year, just to be able to jump back in and play some old games. With the new initiative, gamers will finally be able to trade in or sell their old console for a new one without losing their library of games.

Microsoft has been very open about the Xbox Series X and apart from one gameplay reveal event that got a bit of negative backlash, the rest of the Xbox Series X reveal has been extremely positive. Here’s looking forward to the next Xbox gameplay reveal where we could possibly see titles from Microsoft’s first-party studios.

Xiaomi Mi laptops officially teased, launching in India soon

Xiaomi has officially teased that its soon going to launch its range of Mi laptops in India. The company’s Twitter handle posted a teaser tagging Dell, Acer, HP, Lenovo and Asus, confirming the much-awaited launch, that earlier leaks have indicated is set to happen sometime in June.

While the company hasn’t revealed specifically which laptops are coming to India, previous rumours have indicated that it could be the RedmiBook 14. Having said that, as the tweet comes from the Mi Twitter handle instead of Redmi, we believe the company could launch Mi Book Air, Mi Book Pro or Mi Gaming laptop in India.

Some leaks and rumours in the past have also indicated that Xiaomi could introduce the RedmiBook in India as the trademark for RedmiBook was seen listed on the Indian Intellectual Property website hinting at an imminent launch. However, it remains to be seen whether the company will set foot in the laptop market of India with the RedmiBook range of laptops.

Xiaomi Mi laptops specifications

Xiaomi offers laptops under two brands in China-- Mi and Redmi with the latter targeted towards affordable offerings. In fact, the company recently announced three new laptops in the RedmiBook range of thin and light laptops in 13-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch screen sizes. These laptops are powered by AMD Ryzen 4000 series of processors paired with upto 16GB RAM and 1TB storage options to choose from. Though we still don’t know any details about the laptop(s) that are going to launch in India.

Xiaomi laptops have been drawing much attention in India from the past few years after the company made its mark in the Indian smartphone market by offering affordable and dependable phones. Manu Kumar Jain, MD at Xiaomi India has previously highlighted the company’s ambition to launch laptops in India. By his own admission, Xiaomi laptops are something the Mi fans have been demanding since a long time and in a video released earlier this year, Manu assured that the company will have something for its fans “very soon”.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the launch schedules of many products for the year 2020 have been impacted and as such it could still be a while till we see Xiaomi release its first laptop in India. The latest leaks have indicated June as the possible month for the launch and we’ll know more as we near the official reveal.

LGs 48-inch OLED finally starts shipping, coming to Asian markets in June

Earlier this year, LG had unveiled a new lineup of OLED televisions at Consumer Electronics Show called the CX series. The main highlight of the CX series was a never-before-seen 48-inch model, which caused a lot of excitement amongst consumers around the world. The CX series from LG would start at 48-inches and offer screens as large as 77-inches. While the CX series TVs had started shipping a few months ago, there was no sign of the 48-inch model, until now.

LG’s 48-inch CX OLED TV has started shipping in the United Kingdom and is expected to be available in other European and Asian markets later in June. The television carries a price tag of £1,499, which roughly translates to Rs 1,40,000. LG lists the price of the 55-inch variant of the C9 for Rs 2,29,990 on its website, but the television can be found for a much lower price of Rs 1,49,999 on Amazon India. Currently, the LG India website lists the 55-inch, 65-inch and the 77-inch versions of the CX series OLED TVs. The televisions are marked as “coming soon” and do not have a price listed. The 48-inch version of the TV is not yet listed either.

When LG announced the 48-inch OLED TV, it garnered a lot of attention, with plenty of excitement to go with that. The reason for this is because OLED TV manufacturers have started their range of televisions from 55-inches, a size that’s fairly large, and incapable of being fit in many homes. Homes across many countries such as the U.K., Japan and even parts of India tend to be on the smaller side, so a smaller OLED TV makes sense. However, many manufacturers say that an OLED with 4K resolution doesn’t make sense below a certain size since the visual acuity offered wouldn’t be much different from an FHD TV set in the same size.

Despite LG’s announcement of a smaller OLED form-factor, we are yet to see other manufacturers such as Sony make similar declarations. With the LG CX 48-inch OLED finally shipping to consumers, it would be interesting to see how the new form-factor pans out and whether it genuinely opens up a new market for the new television technology.

One of the biggest disparities between Apple’s markets elsewhere and India was that in India, the company only launched specific configurations for their laptops. In most other markets, users enjoyed the ability to configure their Macs to their liking. Well, all that’s started to change.

According to TechCrunch, Apple retailers in India have started accepting orders for custom-configured Apple machines, with a lead-time of 4-5 weeks. What this means is that you no longer have to settle for the limited configurations that are normally listed on the Apple India website. For example, the brand new Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch can be configured using an 8th or 10th generation Intel processor, along with up too 32GB RAM and 2/4TB of storage. However, in India, users would have had to choose between pre-configured systems. Now, they can simply go to an Apple retailer and order a custom-configured MacBook Pro 13-inch. This facility is available for all Apple computers.

It is interesting to see build-to-order systems being made available via retailers now. When we reviewed the 16-inch MacBook Pro, we had noted that Apple retailers in India could get custom configured builds of the laptop for customers, but that facility was available only for bulk/enterprise orders and required payment to be made in forex. The process now is not only much simpler but also open to everyone who wishes to use it.

The build-to-order facility comes via retailers just ahead of Apple launching its own webstore in India, with a physical sore expected to launch later next year. Apple’s ambitions were confirmed by company CEO Tim Cook himself during an investor call earlier this year, saying that the company had been trying to work out the permissions with the Indian Government. Despite the national lockdown brought on by the spread of COVID-19, it would appear that Apple is in track to realise its ambitions of a more substantial presence in India.

Currently, Apple sells its products in India via a massive network of distributors, which works fine when it comes to iPhone and iPad devices, but the more expensive laptops and computers offered by the company go into complicated territory. For a distributor to stock inventory of every possible permutation and combination of a laptop is just not feasible, which is why Apple only brought specific configurations to India.

Since these built-to-order systems are going to be imported, it would be interesting to see how this would impact the final price of the machines. We expect that import duties and shipping costs would have a noticeable impact on the final price tag.

Microsoft Windows 10 May 2020 update rolling out with cloud restore option

Microsoft has started rolling out the Windows 10 May update to all users. This is one of the two feature updates Microsoft rolls out annually and is expected to include a great number of features and fixes for the Windows 10 OS. The update is rolling out to regular users now, but it will be a while before the deployment reaches 100 percent of the users base.

Some of the interesting updates brought by this new update include the ability to choose between Classic and Enhanced search, which defines just how much of the data on your PC is indexed for search. Remember, indexing can be very CPU and RAM intensive so its nice to be able to choose between a full and partial index. DirectX is also receiving an upgrade, incorporating Ray-Tracing 1.1. For those looking for more “in your face” features, the Xbox Game Bar will finally have an fps overlay option. Perhaps the most useful feature users are going to get through this update is the ability to restore their machines using the cloud. Currently, if you need to wipe your machine and re-install windows, you need a bootable version of Windows installer either on a USB drive or a DVD drive. For laptop owners, this may not be a problem since most OEMs bake in a recovery partition, but for desktop users, having access to Windows installation media 24x7 may not be possible. For those who don’t have a windows recovery disc, you can now simply reset your PC using the cloud. The version of Windows that will be installed will be the same as the one that was installed, however, your personal files and applications will all be removed. For a full list of what's included in the update, you can visit the Windows Experience Blog.

Given that Windows Update has had very poor reliability over the last few months, users should be hesitant on updating their machines in the early days of the release. Microsoft is not making the update mandatory for users as the moment, but it is possible that a few months down the line, once the update has proven to be stable, the policy might change.

PUBG Mobile teases new Mysterious Jungle Mode, to be available from June 1

PUBG Mobile will soon be getting a new mode for players to play with. Called the Mysterious Jungle Mode, the mode will be limited to Sanhok and will be available from June 1 onwards. Aside from in-map modifications, there will also be new jungle-themed outfits that will be made available to players.

According to the patched notes released at the launch of the v0.18.0 update, the new mode won’t be directly available for players to select. Instead, there will be a random chance to enter the mode when playing in Sanhok. This mode gives players the chance to find totems, which players can invoke and receive a “blessing or an item”. There is also Jungle Food that players can eat to gain “mysterious effects”. However, details of the blessings players get as well as the mysterious effect players get is not yet known. However, what is pretty straightforward is the Hot Air Balloon that players can control.

Besides the Mysterious Jungle Mode, Tencent has also added the Bluehole Mode. This mode is pretty similar to the classic mode. However, instead of one circle, there are two. There is your traditional circle which is your safe zone, and a smaller circle inside it. Just like the area outside the larger circle, the area inside the smaller circle will also drain the health of any player inside. As such, the safe zone area is smaller in size, making it more likely for players to come across each other. However, the smaller circle also marks the location of the next circle, so players can plan and strategize accordingly.

Of course, PUBG Mobile’s v0.18.0 update also brought with it a bunch of new additions, most notable being the new Mad Miramar map that packs a whole host of new features. If you’re having trouble with the new map and need some help, you may want to check out our basic guide to the new map here.

The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro were being assembled in the Oppo facility in Greater Noida. Due to some employees testing positive for the Coronavirus, production at the plant had to stop. Sonys PS5 reveal could be just around the corner

Information circulating the internet suggests that a PS5 reveal event is just around the corner. Both VentureBeat and Bloomberg say that Sony is planning a PlayStation event for June 3 but this is subject to change. Information circulating the internet last week suggested that an event was planned for June 4, so it is possible we could get an event as early as next week for the new console. Fingers crossed. The sources go on to say that it is possible these dates will change keeping the current pandemic situation in mind.

It is also expected that the console's design and pricing along with the release date will be withheld and we could get this information at a future date. Since both Microsoft and Sony want to price their consoles competitively, both brands are waiting for the other to blink first and reveal the price so the other can undercut it. According to VentureBeat, “Sony also doesn’t need to go too deep on any games it may show on June 3. The company is planning follow-up events. This includes a State of Play that will focus on both next- and current-gen games. That State of Play has a tentative schedule of early August. Again, this could shift drastically depending on a number of factors”.

Sony has taken to its online State of Play to reveal details of two of its biggest upcoming games, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2, so it is possible we can get deep dives into more games through the online State of Play events.

Sony has been drip-feeding us information about the PS5 and apparently the company has had to evolve its promotional plans in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We got a GDC like reveal for the PS5’s specifications and a simple blog post highlighting the new DualSense controller.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has not only shown us the specifications, but the design of their upcoming Xbox Series X. Microsoft also had a gameplay reveal stream, but that was met with some negative feedback as there was very little gameplay revealed as a part of the stream.

Last of Us Part 2 new gameplay shows off more of the story and gameplay mechanics

We got a proper look at one of the year’s most anticipated game, The Last of Us Part 2, courtesy of Playstation’s State of Play presentation. Even though we've gotten a full story trailer, in the new 24-minute presentation, Neil Druckmann, Director of The Last of Us Part 2, gave us a much deeper look at the gameplay and even gives us a bit more of the story of the game. It goes without saying that the game looks beautiful with a large variety of locales and environments to explore. The game retains much of the first part’s gameplay mechanics with a few added features and skills. We’ll take you guys through what we saw and what you can expect from the final release.

Naughty Dig has taken a bit hit in regards to The Last of Us Part 2 with a ton of the game being leaked weeks before the actual release date. But, the hype is still high and fans are still excited for what looks to be the Playstation 4’s swan song before the Playstation 5 hits store shelves later. As per the presentation, the game takes place a few years after the events of the first. Joel and Ellie are living in Jackson, Wyoming when an event that is not revealed rocks the community and sends Ellie on a quest for revenge. A majority of the game then takes place in Seattle as Ellie battles through two different sets of human enemies in the Washington Liberation Front and a cult-like group called the Seraphites or Scars. And, of course, we’ve got the infected as well. There are a few new infected such as the Shambler, but Druckmann did reveal that there were more creatures in the final game.

In the gameplay demo, we can see a few added features such as Ellie using a vine to rappel down buildings and swing across obstacles to even swimming underwater in certain sections. There will also be sections where you can ride a horse and explore the large and luscious environments as well.

The game retains much of what made the first game great in its stealth and crafting systems and this one looks to follow in the same vein. The game snippet looks to take place in some kind of abandoned hospital where Ellie stealthily sneaks around, taking out her pursuers. New sections also include climbing into air vents to sneak around. Collecting scrap and resources also returns as weapons are also crafted on special workbenches. The gameplay demo wasn’t very long but gave us a good look at what we can expect from the final product when the game ships on June 21.

In other Playstation news, the game could also see an HBO show from the creators behind the hit-series Chernobyl. You can read more about that here. Naughty Dog has also partnered with Seagate to release limited edition external hard drives. You can read more about that here.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau reveals companys plan to launch affordable smartphones in India soon

OnePlus is getting back at producing affordable smartphones, company CEO Pete Lau officially revealed this in an exclusive chat with Jared Newman of the Fast Company. Lau has hinted that an affordable OnePlus smartphone could be en route to India very soon and it’s likely he’s talking about the much-rumoured OnePlus Z a.k.a OnePlus 8 Lite.

The OnePlus Z was rumoured to be unveiled during the OnePlus 8 series launch event which took place on April 14 but remained a no-show. Subsequent chatter around the purported OnePlus Z on Twitter and online forums hinted that the phone has been postponed to a later date in Summer 2020 due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Having said that, the interview is the first time the company has publicly spoken about the plans to launch “affordable phones” with hints to expand into other product categories. “We can look at it as having a more affordable product offering, but all products that still remain up to the OnePlus standard . . . and through this enabling, more people to have access to OnePlus products,” Lau tells the Fast Company through an interpreter.

Why is OnePlus going back to its roots?

There could be myriad reasons as to why OnePlus needs to get back to selling value for money devices. The company that once touted itself proudly as the “flagship killer” has been known to increase the prices of its phones with every new iteration. Starting with the Rs 21,999 ($300) priced OnePlus One to the latest OnePlus 8 series of smartphones that start at Rs 41,999 ($699), the prices of the phones have increased exponentially since the OnePlus 6T series. This could have led to OnePlus losing a significant chunk of early adopters who still expect flagship-grade performance but without paying as high a price as the current crop of OnePlus phones.

This is well reflected in Lau’s statement where he says, “What we’re seeing is that with current products, there’s still a demand from a large consumer base for a more suitable price that enables more consumers to be able to access OnePlus products. That’s really important insight, and it’s something that we’re taking into very serious consideration.”

OnePlus’ decision to launch affordable smartphones comes at a time when most flagship smartphones have essentially vacated the sub-Rs 35,000 segments and now come with exorbitant price tags. The rumoured OnePlus Z can prove to be an important phone for the company, to this effect.

OnePlus Z leaked specifications

OnePlus’ upcoming affordable phone could feature a 6.4-inch OLED screen with a Full HD+ resolution. It could have a punch-hole cutout at the top for the front-facing 16MP camera. The screen is expected to support a 90Hz refresh rate with a fingerprint reader underneath the display.

OnePlus Z is rumoured to be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1000 chip with 5G support and paired with 8GB RAM and up to 256GB storage. The phone could have a triple camera setup on the back the consists of a primary 48MP camera, a 16MP camera and a 2MP depth sensor.

OnePlus Z could come with 4,000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging courtesy of Warp Charge 30. It is expected to be priced starting at CNY 2,999 which roughly translates of Rs 32,000 by direct conversion.

We’ll know more about the affordable OnePlus phone as we near the launch which is expected to be held in India first.

Sony launches ZV-1 a compact camera for vloggers and content creators

Sony has launched a new advanced point and shoot camera, and no, it isn’t an RX-100. The new camera is the Sony ZV1 and is a camera designed for Vloggers and content creators. At first glance, it shares some glaring similarities to the RX-100 series of cameras, but a closer look reveals a number of differences.

The Sony ZV-1 packs a 1" 20-megapixel sensor and a 25.5-70mm F1.8-2.8 lens makes its core specs very familiar. We have seen Sony use this configuration on various version of the popular Sony RX-100 models of the past, but the current RX 100 Mark VII has opted for a different lens configuration. This automatically lends the ZV-1 a reliable heritage, as we’ve seen this combination of sensor and lens win many users over. The ”vlogger” centric features start with the full articulating touchscreen. Then there is also the reworked ergonomics that are more suited for “selfie-style” shooting. Perhaps the biggest feature that’s going to attract vloggers to this camera is Sony’s Eye-AF, a feature that will lock onto the subject’s eye and track it so as to keep the subject in focus. This is a feature that’s found in many modern-day professional mirrorless cameras and its inclusion into the Sony ZV-1 is bound to rack up favourable points for Sony.

In terms of camera specs, the ZV-1’s sensor has an ISO range of 125-12800, offering plenty of room for shooting in all kinds of lighting situations. The camera can record 4K video at 30 fps, with bitrates as high as 100Mbp. For those looking to shoot in FHD, your options for frame rates are more generous, ranging from 24p all the way to 120fps.

Sony has announced that the ZV-1 will launch with a special introductory price of approximately $749 USD, applicable till June 28, 2020. After that, the price will increase to approximately $799 USD. In terms of when the camera will come to India and at what price, those details have not yet been revealed.

Facebook launches CatchUp, an audio-only group chatting app

As the world comes to grips with the Coronavirus outbreak, we’ve seen the rise of video calling applications as the most preferred means of communication. But, it looks like Facebook is bucking that trend with the launch of CatchUp. The app is a strictly audio-only app that can set up group calls with up to 8 people. Users also do not need to possess an account on Facebook to access the service as it works with your phone’s contact list. It also lets you know when other users are available to talk.

The reason behind Facebook ‘s decision to make CatchUp audio-only is a simple one. In a blog post, Nikki Shah, Product Lead on Facebook says, “Keeping in touch with friends and family is important, especially during this time of physical distancing. Messaging and video calling are great ways to send a quick update or connect with someone face-to-face, but speaking to someone over the phone offers a unique balance of both convenience and personal connection. Based on our studies, we found that one of the main reasons people don’t call friends and family more frequently is that they don’t know when they are available to talk or are worried they may reach them at an inconvenient time. CatchUp addresses this problem and even makes group calling as easy as one tap.”.

The app is currently being tested out in the US for a limited time on iOS and Android and there is no word on when it’ll come to other regions as of now. Facebook has also been making a few major strides in India as well as the company has reportedly invested $5.7 billion in Reliance Jio Platforms. The social media giant has bought Gif-making site GIPHY for $400 million and plans to integrate the app with Instagram. You can read more about it, here.

PUBG Mobiles new KillDeath ratio explained

PUBG Mobile’s Season 13 update introduced a number of notable new features. However, one of the most notable new additions that managed to fly under the radar was a new way the Kill vs Death ratio (K/D ratio) was implemented. The update changed the way K/D ratio is calculated for players.

Earlier, K/D ratio was calculated based on the total number of kills a player has by the total number of deaths. While this system seems to work on traditional multiplayer games, it was deemed unsuitable for PUG Mobile’s Battle Royale-style gameplay. The developers noted that players were boosting their K/D ratio by surviving till the end.

PUBG Mobile new Kill/Death Ratio

With Season 13, Tencent has introduced a new K/D system wherein the K/D ratio is calculated based on the number of kills a player gets in each game, regardless of whether the player survived till the end. This means that the new K/D ratio is calculated based on the total number of kills a player gets by the total games played by the player.

This means that if a player has a K/D ratio of eight according to PUBG Mobile's new calculation system, he/she will have to maintain a record of eight kills or more in every game in order to maintain and improve that kill record. Getting less kills in a game would reduce that K/D ratio.

The new K/D ratio is just one of the many subtle changes introduced in Season 13. Other subtle changes include firearm balancing (especially to shotguns), death replay improvement, new results screen UI and more. Of course, some of the major changes in the game include the addition of an upgraded version of the Miramar Map, canted sights, and more. You can learn more about the update here.

ARM announced Mali G78 and Mali G68 GPUs with asynchronous clock speed control and support for 24 GPU cores

Like clockwork, ARM announced the roadmap for 2021 CPU and GPU designs for mobile devices that included the ARM Cortex-A78 and ARM Cortex-X1 CPU cores, promising 25 per cent and 30 per cent boost in performance respectively. On top of that, ARM also revealed new GPU designs, namely, the Mali G78 GPU and the Mali G68 GPUs, meant to take mobile gaming to its next frontier.

The new Mali GPUs take into account high-end gaming on high refresh rate displays, machine learning application and the likes. The Mali G78 is meant for premium smartphones while the Mali G68 is for mid-rangers.

ARM Mali G78: Up to 24 cores with asynchronous clock speed control

The Mali G78 is based on ARM’s Valhall microarchitecture that also powers the previous Mali G77 and Mali G57 GPUs, with some new improvements. For one, the Mali G78 now supports more cores, up from 16 to 24 cores this time, which might help the GPU close the gap in performance on Qualcomm’s Adreno GPUs which is preferred in most high-end smartphones.

ARM allows OEMs to keep the core count variable in the Mali GPUs and the exact performance metrics will depend on exact core configuration and clock speeds of the GPU. ARM did claim a 25 per cent boost in performance because of the new design and an anticipated move to 5nm manufacturing process.

ARM said the Mali G78 offers a 15 percent improvement over the previous Mali G77 in performance density, along with a 10 percent improvement in power savings and a 15 per cent boost in AI performance. ARM also promised a performance improvement between 6 percent to 17 percent in gaming, over the previous generation. The company said that packing up to 24 cores will yield 11 per cent improvement, but keep in mind mobile devices have tremendous space crunch for extra silicon to accommodate more cores. Expect smartphones to aim for a sweet spot of 10-12 cores in the GPU.

While the Mali G78 does gain a good boost thanks to more cores, the secret sauce in this year’s offering is what ARM is calling the Asynchronous Top Level. It basically means the GPU will have asynchronous clock speeds for the shader cores and the Top Level that includes the L2 cache, Tiler, MMU and the Control Fabric. ARM said the Top Level will run at 2x the speed of the shader cores for faster texture and geometry processing. This allows for higher bandwidth to keep the shader cores fed with more work to do, allowing OEMs to scale-up performance significantly with more cores. Having more cores that run at a lower frequency can also help save power. However, OEMs may not be willing to dedicate more silicon area for the extra cores.

ARM Mali G68: Smaller silicon, better performance

On top of the Mali G78, ARM also announced the Mali G68 GPU meant for mid-range devices, succeeding the Mali G57 GPU. The new offering shares a lot of features with the Mali G78 and covers lesser silicon area than the previous generation.

The Mali G68 also boasts of the Asynchronous Top Level present in the Mali G78, only this one can scale between one to six cores.

ARM Cortex A78 and Cortex X1 cores are designed for big things

ARM has today made not one, but two huge announcements. The company has revealed their next processor cores, the Cortex A78 an expected upgrade to the current A77 and the Cortex X1, a brand-new core altogether. With the announcement of the Duo, ARM is taking serious swings at the likes of Apple’s A-series bionic processors.

Cortex-A78: All about power efficiency

The Cortex A78 cores move to a 5nm process node which help improve not only the efficiency numbers, but also those of performance and even the area taken up by the core within the processor die. The Cortex A78 promises a 20 percent boost in performance over the A77 within a 1-watt power budget. This is achieved thanks to higher clocks, the move to 5nm and the architecture changes. Instead of looking at the Cortex A78 in terms of its peak performance output, consider the fact that a Cortex A78 core running at 2.1 GHz consumes up to 50 percent less power than a Cortex A77 core running at 2.3GHz. Current SoC’s tend to use a cluster of A77 and A55 cores banded together, and ARM says that the Cortex A78 cores could replace the current A77 ones, leading to 20 percent increase in sustained performance while taking up 15 percent less area within the SoC die. The next generation of mobile SoCs, atleast the ones using Cortex A78 cores, seem to promise slightly improved performance, but significantly better power efficiency. The current Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip uses a combination of the custom Cortex A77 and Cortex A55 cores.

Cortex-X1: All about performance

ARM’s processor cores have always had a hard time competing with Apple’s A-series chips. The Cortex A7x cores just could not match Apple’s engineering, and now, ARM’s answer to that is the Cortex-X1 core. The chip is a result of ARM’s Cortex-X Custom (CXC) program and wholly deviated from ARM’s philosophy of trying to balance performance, power and space occupied. ARM claims that the Cortex-X1 core should be able to deliver 30 percent performance gains over the Cortex A77 cores and a 23 percent boost of the just-announced Cortex A78 core. This is for all cores running at the same clock speed, making it an even bigger achievement. The X1 cores also come with double the L1, L2 and L3 caches in comparison to Cortex A78. It is important to note that ARM has not revealed any specific power efficiency numbers for the X1 core. Additionally, given its larger footprint on the die and higher power demands, its unlikely that an X1 core would make its way into a smartphone for now.

We’re going to make a wild assumption here and say that it is likely that the ARM Cortex-X1 core could lay the groundwork for the long rumoured ARM-based Apple laptops. While an X1 core may not be paired with a Cortex A55 core, creating an SoC with 4 Cortex-X1 and 4 (or more) Cortex A78 cores could be a potential laptop-powering combination. Amazon-created Graviton2 has already showed that it can give both Intel and AMD a run for its money in the server space when it comes to performance per dollar. The chip is using ARM's Neoverse N1 cores, so we know that ARM can definitely design powerful chips. ARM says that it will supply Cortex X1 cores only to those partners who have been a part of the CXC program from the beginning, and that they would all get the same configuration of the chip. The company did, however, mention that it might consider customised solutions for different partners at a later date. At the moment, ARM has not disclosed who is eligible to receive the X1 cores.

It is shaping up to be a promising year for System on Chip technologies, with the 5nm process becoming commercially available by the end of the year. We can definitely expect Qualcomm to further tweak the performance of the Cortex A78 cores, but it would be far more exciting to see products that make use of ARM’s Cortex-X1 core.

Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel register a significant drop in download speeds in April: TRAI

Top telecom operators Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio have witnessed a major drop in internet speeds in April as indicated by the latest set of data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority in India. Reliance Jio recorded an average download speed of 13.3 Mbps in April which is a 30% drop in speeds when compared with the average speed in March which stands at 19.5 Mbps.

As most people started working from home due to the Coronavirus lockdown that resulted in a nation-wide lockdown, telecom operators haven’t been able to keep up with the surge in demands. Telcos have earlier urged OTT service providers such as Netflix and video services like YouTube to lower their streaming quality in an attempt to maintain the surge in traffic without sacrificing on bandwidth.

The latest TRAI report indicates that Vodafone Idea registered 5.6 Mbps average download speed followed by Bharti Airtel averaging 5.5 Mbps. In comparison, Vodafone was clocking in 6.7 Mbps average download speed in March while Airtel saw 6.2 Mbps download speeds.

TRAI’s data is based on the metrics derived from its MySpeed app that takes into account various elements including data speed, signal strength and more. According to previous data set released by TRAI, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone witnessed peak performance in February, earlier this year where Jio registered 21.5 Mbps average download speed while Airtel and Vodafone saw an average download speed to 8 Mbps.

Reliance JioFiber subscriber count dips

TRAI’s report on the decline in wired broadband subscribers that was released last month states that the number of wired broadband subscribers stood at 19.14 million at the end of 2019 but witnessed a decline of 0.27% by the end of January 2020.

The report also indicates that the total number of wireless subscribers increased from 1,151 million to 1,156 million at the end of January 2020, registering an increase of 0.43 per cent.

OnePlus and Epic Games announce partnership, bring 90fps gaming to OnePlus flagship devices

OnePlus has today announced a partnership with Epic Games, the outcome of which is going to excite a lot of gamers. The two companies have partnered together to release a version of Fortnite that would run at 90fps on the new OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8. This is a big deal since no OnePlus device has been able to offer gaming at a frame rate higher than 60fps.

The partnership between OnePlus and Epic Games will result in a version of Fortnite that will run at up to 90fps on the company’s latest flagships, the OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8. “OnePlus and Epic Games have created one of the best Fortnite experiences ever on a smartphone. The OnePlus 8 Series delivers a smooth, high framerate Fortnite gameplay experience – that even current generation console game systems can’t match,” said Pete Lau, Founder & CEO, OnePlus. “OnePlus creates the best devices for mobile gaming through our industry-leading display, speedy performance, and overall user experience designed with power-users in mind.”

The OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8 use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC paired with 8 or 12GB of RAM and feature 120Hz and 90Hz refresh rate displays respectively. The previous flagships from OnePlus, the OnePlus 7T Pro also sports a 90Hz display, however, uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. OnePlus has clarified that the 90Hz frame rate will be limited to the newest OnePlus phones, and users of the OnePlus 7T Pro, OnePlus 7T, OnePlus 7Pro and even the OnePlus 7 would be able to run the game at 60fps max. The OnePlus 7Pro (Review) was the first OnePlus device to sport a high refresh rate display, but at the time, did not run any game higher than 60fps. Finally, a year later, we are getting our first high-refresh-rate gaming experience on a Oneplus device.

There is a large library of games that can run at frame rates higher than 60fps, thanks to the early push by brands like Razer and Asus. Most of these apps, however, only function at high frame rates when they are run on the Razer Phone II or the Asus ROG Phone II. Both the phones sport a 120Hz display and now, the OnePlus 8 Pro is joining their ranks. While it's great to see OnePlus finally bring high-fps gaming to their flagship device, we cannot wait to see more titles running at 90fps on OnePlus’ devices. The OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8 are available on Amazon and OnePlus's own website for purchase, with a shipping date set for May 29.

OnePlus 5 and 5T start receiving Android 10 stable update

If you are a OnePlus user, then you should be confident by now that OnePlus brings new updates to older devices whenever possible. It looks like the OnePlus 5 and 5T will be the latest to get the stable Android 10 update. The information comes from the OnePlus Forum where users are posting screenshots of the update coming to the OnePlus 5 and 5T. The OnePlus 5 and 5T launched back in 2017.

OnePlus 5 and 5T Android 10 details

The screenshot of the update posted by the users has all the details of the features coming to the smartphone. The OnePlus 5T Oxygen OS 10.0.0 is 1875MB in size and brings with it a host of features. To start with, it updates the smartphone to Android 10 and brings a brand new UI design. It also brings enhanced location permission for privacy and new customization features in the settings allowing you to choose icon shapes to be displayed in the quick settings.

The update also brings a new Game Space feature that allows you to add your favourite games in one place for easier access.

The update also lets users block spam by keywords for Messages. The update also brings full-screen gestures.

The OnePlus 5T was also the first phone to get a special edition in the form of a Star Wars special edition. Speaking of special editions, it looks like the partnership between OnePlus and Mclaren has ended. The OnePlus 6T and the OnePlus 7T Pro were the 2 devices to get a Mclaren edition. If there was one device that embodied the DNA of the McLaren formula more than the special editions was a device that was never released to the public. It was the OnePlus Concept One. As the name suggests the device was a concept and wasn't released to the public, but we got our hands on the device and you can check out our hands-on in the video below. The unique thing about the OnePlus Concept One was the fact that it had a disappearing camera. OnePlus used electrochromic glass technology to hide the rear cameras on the handset, the same as what is seen on Mclaren 720S. It also has the same papaya orange colour found on the McLaren car and the signature stitching found on the seats of the 720S. You can read more about OnePlus and McLaren's partnership here.
