Sony PS5 State of Play event date leaked: What to expect

The PS5 is slated to launch towards the end of 2020 and Sony has done a decent job of surprising fans with information about the console. The company took to a blog post to show off the DualSense controller before it could be leaked. At an event in June, Sony also showed off the PS5 and PS5 all-digital edition before it could be leaked as the console was expected to enter production. However, a lot of information like the date of Sony’s events has leaked online multiple times and has generally been on point. However, we do suggest you take the following information with a grain of salt.

According to Jeff Grubb’s Summer Game Mess, it looks like Sony will hold a PS5 state of Play in August 2020. He doesn’t mention a date but information circulating the internet suggests that it could be between the 5th and 11th of August.  There is no information on what could be showcased at the event but speculations are high for rumoured games like Silent Hill remake and many more that are yet to be announced.

I have found the obelisk hidden within Jeff Grubb's Summer Game Mess, and I now travel the universe reborn in the light of video games. It kinda sucks. pic.twitter.com/Q1rS5baY3K

There is a lot we do not know about the console including the UI, where is the expansion slot, the ports at the back of the console and most importantly, a price and launch date. Getting all the above information at one go may be asking for too much as Sony and Microsoft are both waiting for the other to reveal the price first. Microsoft is also expected to hold an Xbox Showcase in August.

We did get some hints of the PS5 UI during the June showcase, but nothing that gives us any details. Both Sony and Microsoft have shown us what the next-gen consoles look like and you can check out our comparison of the 2 consoles here. You can also check our comparison of the specifications of the PS5 and Xbox Series X here.

Netflix will let users speed up or slow down playback on Android smartphones

It looks like Netflix customers will be able to control the playback speed of the content they watch. According to The Verge, “Netflix will allow anyone on an Android mobile device to stream at either 0.5x or 0.75x speeds for slowed-down viewing and 1.25x or 1.5x speeds for faster watching”. For those that consume content at a fast speed on YouTube will be familiar with these playback options. It looks like Netflix is testing the feature on the web browsers and iOS but there is no information on whether this will come to the Smart TV platform or to streaming devices like the Fire TV stick or Mi Box.

Playing content faster or slower isn’t something new and the feature has been available on YouTube for some time now. The options on YouTube to control playback speed are more than what Netflix is offering. If you are binge-watching a show, there are times when you want to watch a certain section faster just to run through it without actually skipping 10 seconds ahead in case you miss something and the ability to control the playback speed will help with this.

“We’ve also been mindful of the concerns of some creators,” a spokesperson told The Verge. “It’s why we have capped the range of playback speeds and require members to vary the speed each time they watch something new — versus fixing their settings based on the last speed they used.”

If you are someone that is looking to subscribe to Netflix, we caution you to be careful as a new Netflix phishing scam has come into light that attempts to steal your personal and credit card information. Moreover, the phishing email is able to bypass mail security measures in place to block such scams in the first place. You can read more about it here.

In other Netflix news, it looks like the streaming service is currently testing a new Mobile+ plan in India priced at Rs 349 monthly that offers HD streaming for phone, tablet or PC. It does not include streaming on TV and follows the basic mobile plan which costs Rs 199. You can read more about it here.

If you would like to take a break from Netflix, know that you can pause your subscription for 10 months. You can read all the details here.

Google Pixel 4a confirmed to launch on August 3: Specifications and expected pricing

Google Pixel 4a is confirmed to launch on August 3 as the company has started teasing the phone on its website and official social media handles. “The Google Just What You’ve Been Waiting For Phone” is expected to be a reference to the much-awaited successor to the Pixel 3a. The Pixel 4a was reportedly set to debut during Google I/O 2020 which was moved to a virtual gathering due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

As a result, the launch was delayed due to COVID-19 which also seemingly caused some supply-chain disruptions. Nevertheless, Google Pixel 4a is likely to be launched on Monday, August 3 and is expected to launch in India as well. Given than the Pixel 4 didn’t make it to India, the Pixel 4a is slated to enter the mid-range segment going up against the likes of OnePlus Nord, Realme X3 SuperZoom and the likes. Google’s upcoming mid-range smartphone has previously been subject to numerous leaks and here’s everything we know about it.

Google Pixel 4a leaked specifications and expected pricing

Google Pixel 4a reportedly features a 5.81-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution and uses an OLED panel. There’s is a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner for the 8MP front-facing camera with an 84-degree field-of-view.

The phone is expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset with an octa-core CPU and Adreno 618 GPU. This is paired with 6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB storage options to choose from. The 4a does have the company’s proprietary Titan M security chip but likely misses out on the Pixel Neural Core.

Pixel 4a has a single 12.2MP camera with support for both OIS and EIS, while the front-facing camera is reportedly the same as the Pixel 3a. The phone’s rear camera is capable of recording in 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 30/60/120fps and 720p at up to 240fps while the selfie camera can shoot Full HD videos at 30fps.

The phone comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and could come in two colours-- Just Black and Barely Blue. The 4a is pre-loaded with the new Google Assistant and other features like Now Playing. It also comes with an assurance of getting Android updates for the next three years.

The Pixel 4a could be fitted with a 3,080mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging but skips out on wireless charging.

Google Pixel 4a is expected to be priced starting at $299 for the 64GB variant and $349 for the 128GB variant. This directly converts to around Rs 22,000 for the base variant and Rs 26,000 for the 128GB storage option for the Indian markets.

What you need to know about Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Googles antitrust hearing

On July 29, CEOs of the 'big four' - Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon - testified before the House Judiciary's Antitrust committee at a historic hearing in the US. It was the first time when Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai and Jeff Bezos testified at the house at the same time.

The tech giants were accused of distinct allegations. Amazon was questioned for its dominance over e-commerce, Facebook for controlling Instagram and WhatsApp, among other apps, Apple for its dominance over its App Store and Google for owning a humongous share of internet searches.

The hearing was conducted virtually over a video call, and it lasted close to six hours where the committee scrutinized all the CEOs one by one. The influential figures were served with brutal bashing and tough questions with documents that raised serious concerns about killing competition using unfair tactics and power. It was intense. So intense that world's wealthiest man forgot to unmute his mic before speaking.

The grilling session was not just long, intense and historical but also an eye-opener for the company's and its consumers alike. Although the US and India have different antitrust policies and consumer data protection laws, the session still gives us a glimpse of the issue that might arise in future.

The committee gathered over 1 million documents from Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon in its probe against them. Representative David N. Cicilline kicked off the hearing saying the panel had conducted a year-long investigation and found that these companies have “wielded their power in disruptive, harmful ways", which isn't fair for the competition and country's democracy. The purpose was to examine the dominance of these companies who own 70% of all online market sale in the US.

In their defence, each of the tech executives stressed on their contributions to the US economy. Facebook for free speech and expression, Google for ease of access to useful information, Amazon for making people's life easy with its services and Apple for providing an ecosystem of apps and its high products to support them.

Let's take a look at the most controversial questions asked each company representative during the hearing.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet

Google was explicitly accused of weaponizing its search engine to put rivals at a disadvantage and promote what makes them the most profit. Cicilline asked Pichai, "why does Google steal content from honest businesses?" He also accused that Google had “stolen content to build your own business,” referring its practice of culling and with search results displaying that information on top. Cicilline also accused Google of monitoring web traffic to “identify competitive threats.”

Pichai, in Google's defence, opposed the accusation of Google stealing content and putting rivals at a disadvantage. “Today, we support 1.4 million small businesses supporting over $385 billion in their core economic activity,” he said. “We see many businesses thrive, particularly even during the pandemic.”

In response to mulling search results for company profits, Pichai said, "We’ve always focused on providing users with the most relevant information." He claimed that the majority of queries in Google don’t show ads at all. "We show ads only for a small subset of queries, where the intent from users is highly commercial", he added.

Cicilline followed up by asking the value of Google's ads business, to which Pichai responded that it's around a hundred billion USD.

Pichai, in the end, tried to explain how Google also has competition by giving an example where he claimed 55% users come looking to shop online search for products on Amazon.

The last question to Google was if it ever used its surveillance over web traffic to identify competitive threats. To which, Pichai replied, "just like other businesses, we try to understand trends from data, which we can see, and we use it to improve our products for our users."

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook

The wave questions to Mark Zuckerberg started with Facebook's political censorship and went on to the Instagram controversy where the social media giant is accused of killing the competition by acquiring it.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the top lawmaker on the House Judiciary Committee, mentioned of a 2012 message in which Zuckerberg has apparently stated that he sought to acquire Instagram, which was a rising threat to Facebook, considering it could "meaningfully hurt us". In addition to this, he also highlighted other Facebook communications that referred company's acquisition strategy as "land grab".

“Mergers and acquisitions that buy off potential competitive threats violate the antitrust laws,” Nadler accused. “In your own words, you purchased Instagram to neutralize a competitive threat.”

"I think with hindsight, it probably looks like obvious that Instagram would have reached the scale that it has today. But at the time it was far from obvious,” Zuckerberg said in his response. He gave Path's example, which was also a popular camera app when Facebook acquired Instagram and said, "it was not a guarantee that Instagram was going to succeed". He tries to explain if Facebook didn't acquire Instagram, it could either be a hit or could have been vanished by now. He claims it's successful because of their investment into infrastructure, security and promotion of the platform after its acquisition.

The acquisition has done wildly well, largely because not just of the founder's talent, but because we invested heavily in building up the infrastructure and promoting it and working on security and working on a lot of things around this."

To conclude his part, Nadler closed the charge saying, "This is exactly the type of anti-competitive acquisition that the antitrust laws were designed to prevent. This should never have happened in the first place. It should never have been permitted to happen, and it cannot happen again."

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple

Apple's hearing was relatively calmer compared to the other three. The company was cornered majorly for its level of control over the App Store and inequality among developers. Some lawmakers accused the company of taking up 30% commission on in-app sales and subscriptions, that has also troubled big companies like Spotify. These companies have to pay a significant part of their revenue to Apple to "fund the entire app ecosystem".

Cook said that Apple has not raised its commission since the launch of the App Store in 2008. “We do not retaliate or bully people,” he said. “It is strongly against our company culture.”

In similar regard, Apple was accused of concerns that "the governing the App Store review process are not available to the app developers". Also, for changes its policies as per its benefit and not treating all developers equally.

To which, Cook replied, "we treat every developer the same. We have open and transparent rules. It’s a rigorous process because we care so deeply about privacy and security and quality."

Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon

It was the first time for Jeff Bezos in front of the house, and it was intense scrutiny with tons of questions thrown at him. The key allegations were around, misleading the committee about its practices in controlling data from third-party sellers not treating its "partners" (small sellers) in the right manner and having a monopoly over them.

Jeff Bezos denied the allegations of using third party seller data for their benefit. In response, Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal revealed public reports that indicated to the contrary, prompting Bezos to offer an admission of potential fault. Bezos said, “what I can tell you is we have a policy against using seller-specific data to aid our private label business, but I can’t guarantee you that policy has never been violated.”

For the majority of the hearing, Bezos either said he couldn't answer the question or couldn't recall or identify the incident he was being asked about.

Sony launches worlds widest zoom lens with an f28 aperture

Sony has announced the brand new FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens for its mirrorless lineup. This is a lens that’s a part of the G Master series of lenses from Sony for its full-frame mirrorless cameras, although it is also compatible with its APS-C portfolio. However, what’s special about the lens is that it’s the world’s widest full-frame lens with a fixed aperture of f/2.8.

The Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 is a fairly large and heavy lens, tipping the scale at 874 grams, measuring 5.39 inches in length and 3.84 inches in diameter. This large size of the lens is due to the complex optical configuration, which includes three XA Extreme Aspherical elements, two super extra-low dispersion (ED) elements as well as a single aspherical lens element. The aspherical and XA elements serve the purpose of controlling fringing and chromatic aberration on ultra-wide lenses, aspherical elements do the same when these ultra-wide lenses also have a large aperture. The aperture assembly utilizes 9 blades, giving the bokeh a circular characteristic. The lens construction also offers a dedicated focus hold button, while also incorporating dust and weather sealing. The lens does not include a filter thread at the front.

Sony launches world's widest zoom lens with an f/2.8 aperture

Up until now, a major breakthrough in lens design has been fairly slow. For decades, the lenses on offer have had standard focal lengths, paired with a standard aperture. For example, it was understood that zoom lenses would not have an aperture larger than f/2.8, since it would make the lens too bulky and expensive to market. However, Sigma broke through that decade-old chokehold when the company announced the 24-35mm f/2.0 lens. This was the world’s first zoom lens with an f/2.0 aperture, signalling that the first party lens-makers had enjoyed their comfort zone long enough. Prior to this, the only major lens redesign we saw was with the introduction of higher resolution DSLRs (30MP+) as the lenses available at the time did not have the resolution to match the sensors, introducing diffraction artefact into images that had been shot at f/8 or smaller. OIS was another area where we saw slow and steady improvement, with Canon and Nikon lenses going from 3-stops of effective OIS to 4 and now, even more. However, Sigma was the first to break the barrier of optical design challenge within the realm of what was considered a fair asking price. Since then, Sony and Canon have stepped up their game significantly.

With Canon finally foraying into the professional mirrorless space with the EOS R lineup, the new RF lenses have been nothing short of an engineering marvel themselves. While they were quick to bring their popular EF lenses to the RF portfolio, such as the 85mm f/1.2L, the 50mm f/1.2L and even the 24-70/24-105 combos, the real engineering marvel was the 24-70mm f/2.0L USM. While Sigma’s lens offered a relatively small zoom range, Canon’s covers a very popular focal length, while offering a larger aperture. Nikon, for its part, redesigned their Noct lens for the modern high-resolution sensor, releasing the Nikkor Z Noct 58mm f/0.95 for its Nikon Z series of mirrorless cameras.

Ultra-wide zoom lenses for well over a decade have been stuck at the 16mm end if the lens had to be a full-frame lens and also pack an f/2.8 aperture. There are prime lenses available with an aperture of f/2.8 that are much wider, and even APS-C lenses that advertise a focal length as wide as 11mm with an aperture of f/2.8. However, the latter does not cover the entire area of a full-frame sensor and when attached to an APC-S body, offers only a cropped focal length. Basically, you’re not really getting the 11mm FOV. The new Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 finally brings everything together; full-frame compatibility, a large aperture and a 12mm wide-end.

Sadly, this kind of feat does not come cheap. The Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 has a price tag of Rs 2,99,990 and is available across all Sony Center, Alpha Flagship stores, Sony authorized dealers and major electronic stores.

The burning question that pops up every time a Honor or Huawei smartphone launches these days, is whether they run on Huawei’s own Huawei Mobile Services or the default Google services that powers every other Android device in India? The answer is no. Like the Honor 9X Pro, the entry-level Honor 9A and Honor 9S also runs on Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) with Huawei AppGallery as the app store. Mi TV users can watch movies under the Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex banner 2 hours before everyone else

Xiaomi Mi TV users, there is good news for you. The company has announced that if you are a Xiaomi TV user and are subscribed to Disney+ Hotstar, then you will get access to movies released under Disney+ Hotstar’s Multiplex banner 2 hours before the rest of the world. So if there is a movie releasing on the platform that you are looking forward to and you have a Xiaomi TV, you can enjoy it 2 hours before the rest of the world.

Commenting on the integration, Mr Eshwar Nilakantan, Category Lead, Mi TVs said,” With consumers at the centre of everything that we do at Xiaomi, we are focused on providing truly innovative customer experience with the best specs and software which is seen consistently across all our Mi TV variants. Understanding the needs of the Indian consumers in these post-COVID times, we are taking our partnership with Disney+Hotstar ahead and providing film-lovers with an additional privilege of experiencing the premiere of some of the biggest Bollywood movies, two hours ahead of the official release. Through this first of a kind industry integration, we are confident that Mi Fans and consumers across the country will be able to enjoy watching the first day, ‘first show’ of some of the most multi-talented actors of the Indian film industry.”

What is Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex?

Well, just like Friday movies released in theatres and Friday night premieres on good old cable TV, Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex is the platform’s version of premiering a movie on Friday nights at 7:30 PM. Even though you can watch the movie after its release on the platform at your convenience, the logic of the 7:30 premier is to make it a family experience of sitting down and watching a movie. The advantage of the Xiaomi partnership is that viewers can enjoy the movie 2 hours before the rest of the world - at 5:30 PM

Xiaomi’s MI TVs run on Android TV and also give users access to Xiaomi’s own UI called PatchWall. According to Xiaomi, “PatchWall 3.0 with its Deep Integration with 23+ Content Partners brings together content from both local and global and across 16+ languages, resulting in one of the largest libraries of Video-On-Demand providers.  With its unique Universal Search feature, users can search content from over 23+ content partner apps, hassle-free. It also allows users to safeguard content that is not suitable for Kids, with Kids Mode. Kids Mode allows you to view and browse content meant for your kids across all platforms with ease”.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro rumoured specifications

Always-on display hinted to arrive on OnePlus phones with OxygenOS 11 update

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has shared a teaser that hints at an always-on display feature in the upcoming OxygenOS 11 update. Back in March, the company confirmed that it would be introducing the feature into OnePlus phones while showcasing the community-suggested features.

For those unaware, the always-on display feature was popular with Samsung phones with AMOLED displays. It essentially illuminates individual pixels to show time and notification details while the phone is locked. During the process, the unused pixels are asleep hence consuming only a fraction of power compared to a fully active display.

The latest tweet from Lau doesn't come with a lot of details. It just shows an analogue clock face with the time set to 11 o clock. The caption reads "11 'on display'", which didn't take much time for us to crack. So the only thing we know is that the feature will arrive with either OxygenOS 11 or the Android 11 update.

OnePlus is among the early adopters of the AMOLED displays. It has been using it since the OnePlus 3. A lot of OnePlus users have been asking for the feature. There's no word on which smartphones will get to use it, but if it's a part of the Android 11 update, owners of the OnePlus 6 and newer might likely get the feature.

OxygenOS 11: Expected features

Other features suggested by the community include enabling pass protection for hidden pictures in the gallery that will practically allow users to set fingerprint security for accessing protected images on the phone.

OxygenOS could soon support folders in the app drawer as currently it's restricted to home screen only. The feature will allow users to group apps in folders and place them inside the app drawer. The devs are also working on adding more essential features to the Zen Mode and a feature that will play a sound clip every time the battery is fully charged.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro with Snapdragon 720G pricing leaks ahead of Indian launch on July 31

Oppo Reno 4 Pro pricing for the Indian variant could have just been leaked, just a day prior to the phone’s scheduled launch on July 31. The Oppo Reno 4 Pro series was launched in China last month in June but the Indian variant is expected to be different as it sports four cameras on the back instead of the triple camera setup found on the Chinese variant.

According to a tweet, the Oppo Reno 4 Pro could be priced starting at Rs 32,990 and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset instead of the Snapdragon 765G that lies at the heart of the Chinese variant. While the price of the Reno 4 Pro isn’t official, the leak suggests a relatively high price when phones like the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, Realme 6 Pro and Poco M2 Pro are priced under Rs 20,000 in India. Also, one should keep in mind that OnePlus recently launched its mid-range smartphone, the OnePlus Nord in India and it comes at a starting price of Rs 24,999 with Snapdragon 765G under the hood.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro rumoured specifications

Oppo Reno4 Pro features a 6.55-inch Full HD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) resolution AMOLED screen with punch-hole cutout on the top-left corner that gives it a 20:9 aspect ratio. The display supports a 90Hz high refresh rate and is certified for HDR10+ playback. The screen is further topped by a layer of Gorilla Glass 6 for added protection against daily wear and tear.

An affordable Jio Phone Lite is now in development: Report

Jio is reportedly planning to launch the third generation of Jio Phone, aimed at the feature phone market. Codenamed the JioPhone 5, the new version will also be a feature phone, not to be confused with the affordable 4G/5G phones RIL Chairman, Mukesh Ambani spoke about during the recent AGM.

Sources close to internal developments told 91Mobiles that the Jio Phone 5 is in planning stages and it will be a locally made feature phone developed under the company's Make in India efforts. The report speculates that the phone could be launched as the Jio Phone Lite.

The Jio Phone Lite's alleged pricing is said to below Rs 400, and the company might announce a new Rs 50 prepaid plan for it. The recharge option is said to offer free Jio to Jio plans that will be valid for 28 days and calling others would be chargeable.

What to expect from the Jio Phone 5?

There's not a lot of information about the rumoured Jio Phone as of now, but it's safe to expect that it will support 4G and will come with apps like Facebook and WhatsApp preloaded, as they're present on the older generation phones as well. The presence of these two apps also indicates that it will run on KaiOS, similar to its predecessors.

It is also speculated to be priced lesser than the first iteration of the Jio Phone at around Rs 399. Hence, the name Jio Phone Lite has been making more sense.

With this, Jio will be targeting to tap the rural and tier 3 markets where people primarily need a calling device without spending a lot. Jio Phone has been a hit. Within a year of its release, JioPhone commanded almost half of the feature phones market. In the second quarter of 2017, Jio was able to capture a 0.3% market share, which increased to 47% market share, within a year, which converted to a whopping 6-digit growth percentage.

There's more coming from Jio and Google

Reliance Jio recently revealed Google's Rs 33,737 crore investment in Jio Platforms, the company's digital arm for a 7.73% stake. Both Google and Reliance are also collaborating to develop entry-level 4G / 5G affordable smartphones for India that run on an optimised version of Android and Play Store.

In his speech during this year's Reliance AGM, Mr Ambani said Jio is working towards upgrading 350 million feature phone users to an affordable 4G/5G smartphone, and its partnership with Google will help accelerate the migration of users from 2G feature phones to 4G smartphones.

Apple iPhone 12, new iPad launch likely delayed until October, indicates Qualcomm

Apple iPhone 12 launch is likely delayed until October as hinted by Qualcomm in its earning reports for the third quarter. Additionally, tipster Jon Prosser has revealed that the iPhone 12 and new iPads are expected to arrive sometime in October. This corroborates with multiple rumours about the delayed launch with Qualcomm stating that its Q4 earnings project a “partial impact” from the delayed launch of a “global 5G flagship phone”.

While Qualcomm did not reveal the name of the phone, it’s indicative of the upcoming iPhone 12 launch. Apple usually launches its new iPhones in September but due to the Coronavirus outbreak across the world, production lines have been impacted by slowed growth and companies have also met with lesser consumer demand. This could mean that the new iPhones with 5G support won’t launch until October as it would also mark the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Apple iPhone 12, new iPad launch likely delayed until October

Moreover, Akash Palkhiwala, Chief Financial Officer at Qualcomm told Reuters, “We're seeing a partial impact from the delay of a flagship phone launch. And so what we've seen is a slight delay that pushes some of the units out from the September quarter to the December quarter for us.” This delay in the launch could also be due to the deferred shipment of 5G chips from Qualcomm which were pushed to end-of-year.

This won’t be the first time Apple is delaying the availability of their new iPhones as was the case with iPhone X and iPhone XR, both of which went on sale in October after launching in September.

Apple iPhone 12 is rumoured to feature a 5.4-inch display with a smaller Face ID notch cutout on the front giving it a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. All the Apple is preparing to announcae this year will feature OLED screens and will be powered by A14 Bionic chipset with 5G support.

Previous leaks have also hinted that the new iPhones for 2020 will be priced aggressively, with the iPhone 12 starting at $649. The iPhone 12 Max is expected to be priced starting at $749 while the other two models, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are rumoured to come with triple camera setup along with a LiDAR sensor like the one on the recently launched iPad Pro. Both the phones are expected to feature a high 120Hz refresh rate as well. The iPhone 12 Pro could start from $999 while the larger 12 Pro Max is said to be priced at $1099.

Recently, Apple started a survey with a limited group of users about how they use their power adapters provided in-the-box amidst rumours that the company won’t be shipping a charging adapter with the iPhone 12. Apple is reportedly developing a 20W fast charging solution for the new iPhones and the adapter is rumoured to be sold separately.

With ban looming, PUBG Mobile updates its Privacy Policy for Indian users

PUBG Mobile recently updated its Privacy Policy specifically for India and Indian users. While it has not been explicitly stated, it is quite possible that the change in policy is to help avoid a ban in the country. The past month saw the Indian Government take a stand against Chinese apps like TikTok and ShareIt by banning 59 of them. However, one notable exception in that list was PUBG Mobile as popular battle royale game somehow managed to fly under the radar. However, reports suggest that the government is planning another wave of bannings and this time around, the game may not be so lucky. Which would explain the change in policy.

The most notable change in the policy seems to be in the ‘where do we process your information’ section. Here, the developers note that the game’s servers are located in India in the case of Indian users. Further adding that the game’s support, engineering and other teams are located in Tencent’s office in India in the case of Indian users will have access to player information.

PUBG Mobile updates its Privacy Policy for Indian users

The Privacy Policy now states, “Our servers are located in India (in the case of users located in India only), Singapore, Hong Kong SAR and the United States. In addition, our support, engineering, and other teams are located in our offices around the world (including the People’s Republic of China (“PRC”) (for the purpose of this privacy policy, this term excludes Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR), India (in the case of users located in India only), the United States and Hong Kong SAR will have access to player information.”

It is still not yet known if the Indian Government will ban PUBG Mobile or not considering the game’s slightly confusing origins. However, if they do end up banning it, you may want to click here and check out some notable battle royale alternatives. If you’re looking for alternatives to the 59 apps that were initially banned, check this out.

OnePlus Nord users face display tinting issues, and its not surprising

Some early buyers of the OnePlus Nord are complaining of green, purple or yellow screen tints. As per 9to5Google, users on the official OnePlus forum and Reddit are reporting of these colour tints at low brightness levels.

As per the report, the early adopters of the Nord have been complaining about multiple display issues. One of the most common ones is the tinting. Nord users report when the display brightness dips below 25%, the darker portions of the display exhibit colour casts or coloured tinting towards the lower half.

In its statement to 9to5Google, OnePlus states, "under specific circumstances of low brightness, slight discolouration may occur due to the properties of the AMOLED display – this is characteristic of all OLED displays, and the degree of discolouration will vary depending on other properties of the display. This is not a quality issue and will not affect daily usage or the durability of the screen. OnePlus will continue to look into cutting-edge display technologies and strive to deliver the best user experience possible."

While it's true that it's a trait of OLED panels and can't be avoided, but it can also be possible that these users are facing a higher degree of tinting that is more prominent. But as of now, Nord users will have to live with it.

OnePlus Nord display issues: It's not the first time

The OnePlus Nord isn't the only handset from the company that is facing display issues. Quite recently, some OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro users also reported similar tinting issues that were later addressed through OTA update. The company confirmed that it's a hardware issue and a common one for AMOLED panels. But then there was another report of a black-crush problem, which is characterized by blocks of different shades of black when a pure black image is displayed on the screen.

OnePlus later issued an official statement on the OnePlus Reddit forums, confirming that the black crush issue is a hardware problem and cannot be fixed via a software update. The company is giving consumers three options if they face this issue on their devices; repair, refund or replacement.

OnePlus users are not alone; many other OEMs get to see complaints from their early users, but it's OnePlus has a consistency. Looking at the past, we can see flickering screen issue, battery issues, black bar issue, and others. OnePlus is usually quick at addressing these issues through its community forum but having such serious faults in newly released models is not something that can be ignored, especially when the company explicitly calls it a key feature.

We were at the OnePlus image lab in Taiwan last year, where the company's co-founder Carl Pei was gathering feedback on the OnePlus 7-series camera from a bunch of Indian journalists and reviewers including me. A fellow journalist asked Carl "what's the point of releasing a smartphone with tons of issues and fix it later?". He had a fair point. Why can't the company release the phone after a proper QA testing rather than handing over faulty devices to the early adopters? Don't forget these guys are the ones who had high expectations and pre-booked the handset without even knowing its price.

Having teething issues at launch is very common across OEMs, but faulty displays are not that common. I am not sure where the gap is in OnePlus' case, but it creates an image as if the company is either rushing the production and not spending resources on Quality Testing or both.

With OnePlus' re-entry into the sub 30K or $500 price segment with the OnePlus Nord, people now have an affordable option to own an OnePlus smartphone that promises to retain the user experience it is known for. In a price-sensitive yet huge market like India, phones like the OnePlus Nord manage to defy the norms. All of that is great, but a product should function as it is intended when it reaches the customer.

Black Shark 3S teasers reveal motion controls and screen mirroring

Black Shark 3S is set to launch on July 31. The company yesterday took Weibo to tease a few details of the upcoming gaming smartphone. Today again, Black Shark has shared official teasers revealing that the 3S will feature screen mirroring, motion controls, and mouse and keyboard input support via USB connection.

Previous teasers confirmed that the Black Shark 3S to have a 120Hz display refresh rate and 270Hz touch sampling rate for ultra-smooth gaming graphics. Another teaser video confirmed that it would have a 6.67-inch AMOLED display and MEMC 3.0 technology to deliver a smooth performance at a higher frame rate by interpolating additional frames.

The Black Shark 3S is a tweaked variant of the Black Shark 3, which was launched in March alongside the 3 Pro. These gaming smartphones are only launched in China as of now, there's no update on when they are going to hit the Indan shores.

Teasers reveal a set of new features on Black Shark 3S

The new teaser video confirms three highlighting features of the Black Shark 3S. While screen mirroring and keyboard/mouse support are features that don't seem very modern, motion controls do look like an exciting addition.

The phone runs on JOYUI 12, which now comes with support for the new features through USB 3.0. It will allow users to plug the phone using USB to a laptop or a PC to mirror the phone's screen using the Black Shark app. Mirroring supports up to 60fps of output on the external device. Interestingly, you can also attach a keyboard and mouse and map buttons on the PC without needing a third party emulator.

As mentioned, the most interesting feature that could actually help in gaming is the added motion control. Users can assign a specific motion command to a particular action as per the game. For example, you can assign tasks like jumping, reloading or opening scope to specific motions like tilting left, right, downwards or raising the phone while playing. It makes it easier to take control of the gameplay by eliminating the need for tapping the screen. If it works as intended, it should help FPS lovers to upgrade their battle skills.

New Netflix phishing scam steals personal data and payment details: Report

A new Netflix phishing scam has come into light that attempts to steal your personal and credit card information. Moreover, the phishing email is able to bypass mail security measures in place to block such scams in the first place. This new Netflix Credential Phishing attack was first discovered by Armorblox researchers, which is a cloud office security platform.

In a blog post, the researchers report that they identified a targeted phishing attack that disguised itself to resemble like Netflix Support. The emails sent to Netflix customers are designed to look like a billing failure message which redirects to a fake Netflix website. This credential Phishing attack works a lot on social engineering, in which the victim is made to believe they are at fault. In this case, the phishing email required the users to update their information on Netflix within 24 hours, pending which their subscription stands cancelled.

Netflix phishing scam: How does it work?

An attacker sends a phishing email that has been designed in a way to elicit an immediate response from the user. The aim of this email is to take the user to the Netflix lookalike website where the user willingly submits their login credentials, billing address and credit card details. Once these details are successfully recorded, the victim gets a notification prompt saying “Success” and redirects them to the Netflix login page.

The email has been disguised as a “Notice of verification failure” which gives it that authenticity that the user prioritizes their attention to the mail. This is also the reason why it remains undetected by email security such as Office 365 Exchange Online Protection as it doesn’t look like a fake email.

Once the user clicks on the link, it redirects to a captcha page that’s made to look like Netflix with the brands black and red colours. The report also notes that all the pages of this website are hosted on legitimate domains and hence security measures in place are unable to detect it in time. The user is then prompted to Sign In for collecting their login data, followed by prompts to fill billing address and payment details. These three steps ensure that the attackers get the victim’s Netflix login credentials, address and credit card details, leaving the user susceptible to more financial harm.

This Netflix scam banks on the user's inability to look past the superficial construct of the landing website which is hosted on a different URL than Netflix. To protect yourself against such scams, ensure that you click on a link in an email only after verifying the redirection link and keeping a tab on URL’s that come from unknown emails.
