Google Pixel 4a to launch in India on October 17

The Google Pixel 4a has a new design with a soft-to-touch plastic back but without the dual-tone style as on the Pixel 3a. It measures 8.2 millimetres in thickness and is fairly lightweight, weighing 143 grams, due to the polycarbonate built. There is a square camera module on the back with the fingerprint reader placed in the middle for faster unlock speeds. The phone doesn’t go for an in-display sensor as is the trend these days likely to keep the price down.

The 4a features a 5.8-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution display that uses an OLED panel. The screen has a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner for housing the selfie camera and has minimal bezels on the sides. This gives it a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Additionally, the display is HDR+ certified which should enhance the video-viewing experience on the phone while the audio is expected to be decent with stereo speakers.

The Pixel 4a is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G with an octa-core CPU clocked at upto 2.2GHz and Adreno 618 GPU. This is paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Being a Pixel phone, Google offers unlimited photo and video storage in Google Photos in high quality for free. The Pixel 4a is a slightly toned-down version of the Pixel 4 that debuted late last year. It doesn’t come with the Soli radar chip or Pixel Neural Core but does come with the Titan M security chip which helps in keeping your data safe along with assured updates for three years.

Google Pixel 4a comes with a single 12MP camera which uses the same Sony IMX363 sensor as the Pixel 4 with support for OIS and EIS. Google claims that the camera of the Pixel 4a is capable of producing Pixel 4-like images from its camera with features like Live HDR+, Night Sight, Astrophotography, Super Res Zoom and more. The phone’s rear camera is capable of recording in 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 30/60/120fps and 720p at up to 240fps while the selfie camera can shoot Full HD videos at 30fps. The front camera on the phone is the same as the Pixel 3a with an 8MP camera with an 84-degree field-of-view.

The 4a does not lose out on the 3.5mm headphone jack and comes pre-loaded with Google Assistant along with a slew of new features like the new Recorder app which transcribes speech to text using AI and machine learning algorithms. In addition, the phone has accessibility features like live Transcribe and Live Caption as well.

The Pixel 4a is equipped with a 3,140mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. Google claims that the 4a can provide a 24-hour battery backup and comes with Adaptive Battery feature that manages the battery life based on how you use your phone.

Lava eyeing a comeback with five budget smartphones launching in November: Sources

Lava Mobiles is preparing to launch as many as five new smartphones in India sometime in November. The company is reportedly expanding its portfolio to go up against the likes of Xiaomi, Realme and Vivo that dominate this particular phone segment. Lava currently offers phones in the entry-level segment that are priced under Rs 8,000. However, according to industry sources, Lava will launch five new budget smartphones under different price points.

The company is aggressively expanding its portfolio and will launch four new budget smartphones in India along with a Designed in India phone, something Lava is focused on from the last year, said sources in the know of the development.

The upcoming phones by Lava will target different budget ranges so you can expect the new phones to be priced under Rs 6,000, between Rs 6,000-Rs 8,000 and Rs 8,000-Rs 10,000, the sources added. There is also expected to be a phone priced above Rs 10,000 from Lava Mobiles along with a new product under a different category.

Lava hosted a Design in India Challenge, back in July this year, inviting students and professionals to design and prototype a smartphone in India under the government’s Make in India initiative. We will likely see a “Designed in India” phone released by Lava very soon.

Lava Pulse

Lava recently launched a feature phone, Lava Pulse that’s said to be the world’s first phone equipped with a heart rate monitor and blood pressure sensor. The company has previously also launched a couple of entry-level phones such as the Lava Z66, Lava Z61 Pro and more. That said, the company is looking to make a comeback in the budget segment as are many erstwhile Indian smartphone makers like Micromax and Karbonn.

Both the companies are rumoured to be developing “Made in India” smartphones and are expected to launch them in time for the Dusshera and Diwali festivities that kick off from October. We expect to see more developments in the coming weeks as Indian phone makers are vying for a comeback in the budget phone segment in India.

Doom Eternal coming to Game Pass tomorrow, with EA Play coming on November 10 to Game Pass Ultimate members

Users of Xbox’s Game Pass now have something to rip and tear through as Doom Eternal comes to the game subscription service tomorrow. Doom Eternal (Review) has been hailed as one of the best games of the decade, surpassing its predecessor in every possible scenario. And, as you all know, we reported that Microsoft has purchased Zenimax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, the publishers of Doom Eternal. It would make sense for Microsoft to blow the doors of the purchase by including one of the highest-rated and critically acclaimed games to Game Pass in October.

But Microsoft isn’t done just yet. The company has also announced that EA Play will be available to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members a little earlier than everyone else on November 10. In a statement on the Xbox blog, Sarah Bond, CVP, Gaming Partnerships and Ecosystem said, “Earlier this month we announced that we’ve teamed up with Electronic Arts to provide Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC members an EA Play membership at no additional cost. Today I’m announcing that starting November 10, EA Play will be available on Xbox consoles, including Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and beginning in December, members with an Ultimate or PC subscription will be able to download and play games from the EA Play library on Windows 10 PCs.”.

Doom eternal coming to game pass

As far as a bang for your buck subscription goes, Game Pass is pretty hard to pass up. And, as the console wars are heating up, with both Microsoft and Sony announcing the launch date and price of the Xbox Series X/S and PS5, offers like a Game Pass subscription really go a long way.

After the recent PayTm controversy, Google has announced that all the apps that sell digital content through the Play Store will have to use Google Play's billing system and Google will charge a fixed percentage fee for every purchase made on that app. On September 18, Google blocked the Paytm app on Play Store for violating its policy on sports betting activities.

Google’s statement reads, “The Google Play Billing policy has always required developers to use Google Play's billing system for in-app purchases of digital goods. Today we have clarified the language in our Payments Policy to be more explicit that all developers selling digital goods in their apps are required to use Google Play’s billing system. Again, this isn’t new. Our policy has always required this. And we will require Google apps to follow the same rules.”

The search giant states that the Google Play Billing policy has always existed, this statement is just a clarification that explicitly reiterates on the policies. This would mean it’s compulsory for app developers to use Google's billing system that takes 30% fee on the payment made within the app. This is applicable starting September 2021. The company also stated it would tweak next year's version of Android to make it simpler to use other app stores on its devices without safety compromises.

What was the PayTm controversy?

Paytm added a fantasy cricket tournament in the Paytm First Games app and the app also promoted other fantasy sports as banners on the homepage which redirected users to a third-party website. According to Google, this form of promotion puts users in potential harm and in such cases the app is taken down from the Play Store temporarily until it is restored and meets the policies. The app was restored after sometime once PayTm removed the ‘cashback’ feature. PayTm later stated that Google forced it to remove the UPI cashback and scratch cards to get re-listed on the Play Store even though offering both is legal in India. The Softbank-backed payment service company also alleged that it was "arm-twisted" by Google to comply with its biased Play Store policies "that are meant to artificially create Google's market dominance."

All this drama led to the clarification from Google’s end on its policies that follow.

Here’s when developers will need to use Google Play billing

As per the policies, developers charging for apps and downloads from Google Play. Also, Play-distributed apps that have paid access to features, services, subscriptions or digital content need to pay the fixed fee. For example, if someone is buying in-app items like virtual currency, extra lives, additional playtime, add-on items, characters and avatars in a game, Google will have its cut in that too. Similarly, subscription services such as Healthify Me, Tinder, Byju’s, Spotify or Netflix share a cut for every payment made inside the app.

Here’s when developers don’t need to use Google Play Billing

The list of conditions above look like every purchase inside Play Store needs to give a cut to Google, but that’s not the case. There are cases where the developer doesn’t need to go through Google Billing system. For example, if you are purchasing or renting of physical good such as groceries, clothing etc, or if you are purchasing a physical service like Uber’s ride, Urban Company’s at home haircut or simply a Cult Fit gym membership. Some other examples will include payment of a credit card bill or a utility bill such as your DTH recharge or a postpaid mobile bill.

Applications that do not comply with the policies have an year

Google says “more than 98% of developers already comply with this long-standing policy.” For the two percent that have over 2 billion monthly active users and incompliant with the policies are allowed time until September 30, 2021 to update them with the required changes. New apps submitted to Play after January 20, 2021 will need to be in compliance with the guidelines. In addition to this, Google will continue to prohibit transactions relating to categories like alcohol, adult goods and services, gambling, counterfeit, drugs etc.

Google has also taken a note of apps that trick users into spending money on their apps. Developers are asked to mention all charges with complete clarity. Google’s policy reads, “developers must clearly and accurately inform users about the terms and pricing of their app or any in-app features or subscriptions offered for purchase. In-app pricing must match the pricing displayed in the user-facing Play billing interface. If your product description on Google Play refers to in-app features that may require a specific or additional charge, your app listing must clearly notify users that payment is required to access those features.”

If you have played PUBG Mobile, you might be familiar to ‘spin wheels’, ‘loot boxes’ and ‘lucky draws’. These options offer randomized virtual items when you use game credits (bought using real money). In these scenarios, Google has asked the developers to clearly disclose the odds of receiving those items in advance.

Google is assuring “openness” to its developers

The search giant emphasised on how it believes in having an open ecosystem. It sheds light on the bright side of its policies like allowing developers to communicate consumers about alternate ways of payment outside the app. It offers refunds and other support directly to make sure the developers can offer a reliable service to its consumers. Most importantly, allowing them to publish their apps on other Android app stores like Galaxy Store, Indus App Bazaar, Opera Mobile Store and many more.

In a virtual briefing, Google Director Business Development, Games and Applications Purnima Kochikar said, "you can also distribute your apps to the web, there are multiple ways. So, if an app is distributed through a third-party store or through the web, Play policy does not apply...It's all about openness." Android developers are allowed to distribute apps through other Android app stores, directly via websites, or device preloads, all without using Play Billing.

Microsoft 365 outage affected Outlook, Teams and Office 365 users globally

Microsoft 365 cloud-based services were affected in a global outage rendering major services including Microsoft Teams, Outlook and Office 365 inaccessible for many users. Microsoft has acknowledged the outages and investigated the issue identifying a recent update as the cause for the disruption of the services affecting millions.

Microsoft took to Twitter and posted status updates over the issue and the resolutions taken by the company to restore its services. At first, the company identified an update as the cause of the global outage and subsequently rolled it back. However, the company did not observe an increase in the connections for the disrupted services which meant that the update wasn’t the cause of the outage.

We're investigating an issue affecting access to multiple Microsoft 365 services. We're working to identify the full impact and will provide more information shortly.

— Microsoft 365 Status (@MSFT365Status) September 28, 2020

“We've identified a recent change that appears to be the source of the issue. We're rolling back the change to mitigate the impact,” Microsoft 365 Status said in a post.

Microsoft then rerouted the traffic to an “alternate infrastructure” while continuing to investigate the issue. After this mitigation attempt, the disrupted services saw an increase in user connections. Microsoft hasn’t revealed the cause of the global outage but many users are still unable to access some of the services.

“We’re seeing improvement for multiple services after applying mitigation steps and we’ll continue monitoring the services to ensure full recovery,” a status update read.

At the time of writing, Microsoft says that the incident has been resolved and any users still experiencing the issue will be resolved soon. That said, many users were unable to access SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business as well and many have taken it to Twitter posting screenshots and other details as they cannot access some services. Most of these users are from North America and the Asia Pacific regions.

We're investigating an issue where users may be unable to access SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. Please look for SP223025 in the admin center.

— Microsoft 365 Status (@MSFT365Status) September 29, 2020

“The majority of services are now recovered for most users. We’re closely monitoring some residual impact for subset customers located within North America,” the company said.

Microsoft Teams gained a lot of users due to many people working for home amidst the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and in April, earlier this year, Microsoft Teams reported over 75 million daily users. The disruption of its services restricted many users from using the different cloud-based services under the Microsoft 365 umbrella, but it remains unclear as to what caused the outage.

Heres when your Nokia smartphone might get the Android 11 update

Google has started rolling out the latest Android 11 update starting with its Pixel phones. As expected, a lot of Android users are now curious to know if and when the new update will arrive on their devices. In a long list of major Android smartphones, there’s only Nokia that is still making vanilla Android smartphones under the Android One program. It promises at least three years of Android OS updates and a lot of Nokia users must be keen to know if their smartphone will receive it.

To rest those curious souls, there could be good news as HMD, from Nokia Mobile’s Twitter handle, shared a roadmap of the Android 11 rollout for supported Nokia smartphones. The tweet is now removed, but Neowin got hold of a screenshot.

Deleted tweet by Nokia Mobile (Source- Neowin)

Looking at the list, HMD Global appears to be adhering to its three-year update promise. As some devices in the list were shipped with Android 9 out of the box. Here’s what the leaked screenshot tells us about the supported Nokia devices and the timeline.

Nokia's smartphones to receive Android 11 update

The first Nokia smartphones to receive the Android 11 update are Nokia 8.3 5G, Nokia 8.1, Nokia 2.2, and the Nokia 5.3. As per the report, these devices will get Android 11 by Q4 2020.

The next phase of smartphones will get the update in Q1 2021. It will be covering the Nokia 1.3, Nokia 4.2, Nokia 2.4, Nokia 2.3 and Nokia 3.4. And the final phase appears to be Q2 2021, that will bring Android 11 to the Nokia 3.2, the Nokia 7.2, the Nokia 6.2, the Nokia 1 Plus, and the Nokia 9 PureView.

While we did not spot this tweet on Nokia’s handle, but we were able to verify that the roadmap was tweeted and deleted soon. It’s still blurry why the company took it down, but if we could guess, the company might have found some inaccuracy or was simply not prepared to make it public yet. But if it’s true, everyone using one of the Nokia phones listed above can take a deep breath.

There wont be a OnePlus 8T Pro, confirms CEO Pete Lau

The OnePlus 8T 5G is going to be the latest to join the company’s flagship range of smartphones after the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, but the 8T won’t arrive with a ‘Pro’ variant alongside. Earlier this month, leakster Max J suggested that the company might not launch the OnePlus 8T Pro, which is now confirmed by CEO, Pete Lau.

The company started releasing the ‘T’ variants of OnePlus smartphones with the OnePlus 3T, which brought a battery and front camera update to the OnePlus 3. Similarly, the Pro variants made their debut with the OnePlus 7 Pro, followed by the OnePlus 7T Pro.

Looks like the company has decided not to go with an 8T Pro variants this time. But why?

Why no OnePlus 8T Pro?

OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, took Chinese social media website Weibo to share the news that there won’t be a ‘T’ variant of the OnePlus 8 Pro. The reason given in the Weibo post is that there is no room for an upgrade in the Pro variant, and those who would like the best experience can go for the OnePlus 8 Pro, as it’s still a competent device.

Here's what OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, posted on Weibo. Here's what OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, posted on Weibo.

This means that the OnePlus 8T could be a standalone smartphone at launch. However, the same Weibo post suggests that the company could be coming up with some surprises for its fans.

The OnePlus 8T has been making headlines since it was first leaked and the company has teased some of its key features as well. Pre-bookings for the 8T are starting from September 25 in India, ahead of its official launch on October 14. OnePlus 8T is confirmed to feature 65W fast charging courtesy of Warp Charge 65 tech that was revealed recently and a 120Hz refresh rate display. Like all OnePlus devices, the OnePlus 8T has been leaked previously with some of its key features spilt way ahead of the launch.
