Netflixs The Sandman Cast Revealed

Attempts to adapt “The Sandman”, based on Neil Gaiman’s groundbreaking graphic novel series, has been an ongoing charade for decades now. After having cycled through numerous studios and horrendous scripts within that timespan, Netflix finally swooped in and fixated on a 10-episode format to depict the dark fantasy tale. With production well underway on season one, we have now gotten our first look at the primary cast members.

There. A whole set of tweets written just before bed and set to go out when I'm fast asleep. I'm vaguely worried that I've mistimed them, but too late now. Here are the first seven members of the #Sandman cast to be announced officially. Seven down, hundreds to go. pic.twitter.com/DksGLyMkBf

— Neil Gaiman (@neilhimself) January 28, 2021

As evident from the tweet above, the lineup features an ensemble cast with a few familiar names thrown in there. Tom Sturridge is all set to play the tall and lanky, pale-faced protagonist - Dream (aka Morpheus), lord of the ethereal realm known as The Dreaming. Roping in two stars from Game of Thrones, we have Charles Dance as the blackmailing occultist - Roderick Burgess, while Gwendoline Christie is cast as Lucifer Morningstar, the ruler of hell. With this adaptation, Gaiman will be making significant changes to the source material, including changing the time period from 1989 to the present-day 21st century. Which clearly explains Lucifer’s gender change. Another character getting similar treatment would be the head librarian, Lucienne, portrayed by Vivienne Acheampong. Adding on, we have Boyd Holbrook playing The Corinthian, an escaped nightmare-turned-serial killer with the weirdest set of eyes. Sanjeev Bhaskar and Asim Chaudhry top-out the roster as Cain and Abel, respectively, fulfilling the role of eternal murderer and victim. As described by Neil Gaiman, this is just seven of the hundreds of cast members to follow.

DC Comics / Vertigo’s The Sandman is a dark fantasy title that follows Dream, the personification of dreams who has been imprisoned by a mortal wizard for 105 years. Upon escaping, he embarks on a treacherous journey to find and reclaim his totems of power - a pouch of sand, a helm, and a ruby. In the original story, “Preludes and Nocturnes”, our lead, Morpheus is only locked up for 72 years. But since Netflix’s adaptation takes place in 2021, Gaiman agreed to extend the time period accordingly. The series is co-written by Neil Gaiman himself, Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman) and David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy), with all three executive producing. Heinberg will also serve as the showrunner.

The Sandman

In a statement with Variety, creator Neil Gaiman spoke briefly about his excitement and process for this adaptation. “For the last thirty-three years, the Sandman characters have breathed and walked around and talked in my head. I'm unbelievably happy that now, finally, they get to step out of my head and into reality. I can't wait until the people out there get to see what we've been seeing as Dream and the rest of them take flesh, and the flesh belongs to some of the finest actors out there. This is astonishing, and I'm so grateful to the actors and to all of The Sandman collaborators — Netflix, Warner Bros., DC, to Allan Heinberg and David Goyer, and the legions of crafters and geniuses on the show — for making the wildest of all my dreams into reality.”

Following the hugely successful debut of The Sandman audiobook in 2020, Amazon’s Audible is all on-board to renew the narrative for two additional acts. It will again be directed by Dirk Magg and Neil Gaiman, and will feature the voices of James McAvoy, Kat Dennings, Taron Egerton, Riz Ahmed, and Andy Serkis amongst others.

Neither the Netflix adaptation nor the audiobook sequel(s) features a potential release window.

FAUGs rating on Google Play Store drops down to 35 stars

It has been barely a week since the launch of FAUG and the popularity of the gaming is taking a nosedive. As of writing, the game has a rating of 3.5 stars on the Google Play Store, with 4,68,278 reviews. This drop is quite evident when one takes into consideration that the game had a rating of 3.9 within a day of launch.

How FAUG competitors fare

This low-rating hits even harder when one takes into account competing games like Garena Free Fire and Call of Duty: Mobile. Both these games have ratings of 4.3 and 4.5 stars, respectively. It should also be noted that both these games have a much higher number of reviews as they have been available for years.

What users say about FAUG

The poor rating of FAUG boils down to the fact that the hype surrounding the game was almost palpable before launch. But the final product was not up to the level players expected.

One Google user, Neelabh Chatterjee, gave the game a rating of 2 stars and commented, “Expectations and the reality are different things. But even so there has to be some things which must be done properly. Presently the game does not have guns. Ok I get it. But if you are going to go for a hand-to-hand combat it still must be better than this. Moves and sequences include mashing on a single button. Block works like 1 out 5 times. When in combat there are weird glitches like fighting direction suddenly changes. Not to mention that parts of the game are repetitive. Hope it improves.” As of writing, this comment was marked by 239 users as helpful.

Even in our review, we noted that while the idea behind the game was good, the execution was lacking. We found movement to be quite limited, while gameplay was quite repetitive to say the least. You can check out our detailed review here.

nCore Games also plans to release a multiplayer component to the game. However, before that, the developers will definitely need to improve the core gameplay. We have also jotted down five things the devs can do to make the game better. Click here to take a look at that.

If you want to download the game and try it out for yourself, then you should check this out.

The Snyder Cut of the Justice League will premier on HBO Max on March 18

When the Justice League film first came out, fans were surprised that the tone of the film did not match the tone set by Zack Snyder for the DCEU. The film was essentially retooled by Joss Whedon and was a bit of a mess. Since then, fans have demanded that Warner Bros. release the Zack Snyder cut of the film. In a stunning move, Warner Bros. decided to release the Snyder cut of Justice League to HBO Max. And, according to the director himself, we’ve now got a concrete release date.

— Zack Snyder (@ZackSnyder) January 29, 2021

The Snyder cut of Justice League will hit the streaming service on March 18. The sad thing is that HBO Max is still not available in India, so fans may have to wait for a bit before the film hits Indian shores. There has been no international release date announced yet. Nor has there been any news on which streaming platform it will finally end up on in India. Director Zack Snyder did state that they are planning on releasing the film internationally, so we’ll definitely have our fingers crossed for that.

Since the film was announced, we’ve got a few bits of information from the film, including a redesigned Steppenwolf and the first appearance of Darkseid. While the film may not be the Citizen Kane of superhero films, it will be nice to see the original vision Zack Snyder had for the Justice League. You can check out the black and white trailer for the Snyder cut of the Justice League below.

OG gaming channel G4 is looking to make a comeback with a weekly series on YouTube and Twitch

For gamers in the mid-2000s, G4 was the place to be for gaming news and reviews. The channel was one of the first to be solely focused on video games and really put gaming out into the mainstream. With shows like Attack of the Show! And X-Play, the channel quickly garnered a ton of viewers. But, bad management and line-up changes saw ratings dip until G4 was replaced by something else. In fact, the show ICONS even had a segment on the rise and subsequent fall of the channel. But, according to a report on the Verge, it seems that the channel might be planning a comeback soon.

G4 will broadcast shows and new content on YouTube and Twitch

The company announced that it was launching a new series called B4G4 on January 29. The show will air on YouTube and Twitch.  B4G4 is essentially a lead-up to the full launch of the gaming network in summer. The show will feature game reviews, news, skits, original content and much more. And, if you happen to be a fan, you will be able to discuss the show on the network’s Reddit channel as well. The return of the channel was even teased last year.

The thing is, in the time G4 has been away, the internet has basically taken over. Shows like the Angry Joe Show, Digital Foundry, Rooster Teeth and tons of other channels have filled that space. So, it remains to be seen how G4 plans to stand out in a relatively crowed market, right now.

Garena Free Fires new Beaston pet now available to players

Garena Free Fire’s newest pet, Beaston, is now available to players in India. To recall, the pet was visible to all players in the pet selection screen, but was not available for purchase. Now though, the new pet is finally available in India. Beaston is available for 699 Diamonds, which is the same as all the other pets in the game except for Mechanical Pup and Kitty.

Beaston was unveiled earlier this month and resembles a cybernetic baboon. However, the moments seem more akin to a gorilla.

Skills and actions

As with many other pets, Beaston comes with a special skill that he grants to the player. Beaston’s skill is called ‘Helping Hand’. This increases the throwing distance of Grenades, Gloo Walls, Flashbangs, and Smoke Grenades. The percentage increase that players can expect will change depending on the level that Beaston is at.

Beaston also has three available actions that can be performed. These are triggers automatically, or activated via the command wheel. This includes ‘Celebration’ that occurs when the player kills an enemy or takes a medkit. The second is a ‘Play’ action that can be manually triggered via the command wheel. The third is called ‘Show’ which is also triggered via the command wheel. These are unlocked when Beaston reaches level two, three and four, respectively.

Strategy

As one might expect, Beaston’s Helping Hand skill would be completely wasted on players who do not use grenades. As such the pet is best used by grenadiers. Further, Beaston would make a good pairing with the Alvaro character. That’s because Alvaro’s passive ability, Art of Demolition, offers increased explosive damage and damage range. This, combined with Beaston’s boost to grenade throwing range, would allow players to rain explosive damage at range. Thereby troubling even those hiding behind Gloo Walls. You can learn more about the pets available in the game, here.

Apple iOS 14 introduces BlastDoor Sandbox security system to iMessage

In the past, there have been various instances where security researchers revealed that a “string of texts” received over SMS could crash your phone or worse, send it into a boot-loop. These kinds of exploits have been reported at least once every year for both iOS and Android smartphones but turns out, iOS 14 has a way to thwarting these kinds of exploits for good, thanks to a system called BlastDoor.

Discovered by a Google Project Zero researched named Samuel Groß, BlastDoor works by parsing all the data contained in an iMessage in a secure sandbox, isolated from the rest of the operating system. By doing so, the contents of the iMessage, if nefarious, won’t have an impact on the OS. All apps installed on an iOS device exist in their own sandboxes, which governed by very tight policies. The BlastDoor sandbox for iMessage has been designed to thwart most exploits which either use brute force or exploit the shared cache on iOS.  Groß says he found the existence of BlastDoor when investigating a hacking campaign against Al Jazeera journalists. There were instances where the hacks did not work and the common thread appeared to be the fact that they were running iOS 14 on their iPhones.

While BlastDoor sandbox definitely makes iMessage more secure, it does not do much for the traditional SMS. Last year in April 2020, a text-based exploit was discovered which could be initiated via a normal SMS. A string of characters written in Sindhi when received as an SMS would freeze iOS completely, rendering the person’s iPhone/iPad completely useless till the OS would crash, and the device could be rebooted. This was due to a bug in iOS, one which Apple has since fixed, but it highlights how the short messaging service format is still a likely vector for delivering exploits.

Messaging apps have been a popular point of intrusion into smartphones for several years now. We’ve seen text message string crash phones, brick them permanently, lock them temporarily, and in one case, even serve as a means of gaining full access to the device. The now infamous Pegasus used a vulnerability in WhatsApp, allowing the hacker full access to a target smartphone, all done remotely. The BlastDoor sandbox for iMessage introduced in iOS14 should prevent some, if not all intrusion and malicious events.

Alienware 310H Gaming Headset

Priced at Rs 8,249, the Alienware 310H offers decent value for money. It has a robust build and comfortable fit, allowing gamers to play for hours on end without any overbearing discomfort. The headset isn’t the best-sounding for FPS games since the gunshots sound too boomy, however, for other genres of games the headset is pretty competent, with good imaging and dynamic sound.

Gaming headsets are a dime a dozen today, with brands pushing to bring their own offerings into this lucrative market. Additionally, gaming headsets are being produced across a wide range of price points, to ensure that every demographic has one adequate for its needs. Alienware is a brand that is renowned in the gaming world and the company has a good lineup of gaming headsets, across several price points as well. A good gaming headset would be classified as one with a robust build, to be able to endure even rage-inducing gaming sessions; a comfortable fit, to allow for hours of gaming; a good microphone, to converse with teammates on Discord or Teamspeak; and immersive sound, to plunge you into the fictional gaming world. Here we are reviewing the Alienware 310H stereo gaming headset which is a mid-range, wired gaming headset, priced at Rs 8,429, but available for Rs 7,999 on Amazon. Let’s see if the headset offers the basics of what makes a good gaming headset.

Build and comfort

Alienware 310H Gaming Headset

The Alienware 310H gaming headset isn’t a flashy one when it comes to the aesthetics. The headset is all-black and has a matte texture which feels uncannily like the outside of an eggshell. The Alienware logo is embellished on the back on the headband extenders on either side and has a glossy finish, which adds a tad bit of contrast.

Alienware 310H Gaming Headset

The earcups are a hybrid of plush memory foam, sports fabric, and leatherette. These materials are meant to optimise cooling and comfort while maintaining noise isolation. In our tests, we found that the material was adequately breathable and was extremely comfortable to don. The ear cups are well-padded and the clamping force isn’t too tight as well. The cups can also be rotated 90-degrees to sit flat on your chest or on a surface.

Alienware 310H Gaming Headset

The headband can be extended on both sides to quite a degree, so most heads should find the headset comfortable to wear. The extenders aren’t exposed and are tucked away neatly within the plastic build. The headband is padded as well and sits comfortably on the head. The padding was a bit too hard for our liking, but it doesn’t get overly uncomfortable at any point.

Alienware 310H Gaming Headset

The cups isolate external noise pretty well, however, due to the noise isolating fit they do get hot at times, especially when you’re in a non-air-conditioned room in a humid city like Mumbai. The left ear cup houses a retractable boom microphone, which slides in and out with ease. The mic can be bent and adjusted as needed, to produce the best sound possible.

The Alienware 310H is a wired headset which comes with a 3.5mm audio cable. The company has also provided a Y-splitter cable in the box as well. According to Alienware, the headset comes with cross-platform compatibility and can be used with PCs, laptops, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. We used the headset with a PC for this review.

Alienware 310H Gaming Headset

The headset also has a small in-line remote control with a volume controlling scroll wheel. There’s also a pretty discreet microphone mute switch on the back on the module that can be flicked down to mute the mic and flicked up to unmute.

Overall, the headset is comfortable and robust, however, it is certainly lacking a gaming aesthetic that is prevalent on a lot of gaming headsets these days. There’s no RGB or accents that make the headset stand out visually. Still, it serves the purpose of comfort, which is pretty adequate for us.

Features

The Alienware 310H isn’t feature-rich, by any means. It is a simple, yet functional wired, stereo gaming headset without frills such as 7.1 surround sound, USB or wireless connectivity, software support, and game sound modes. However, it does come with a Discord-certified microphone, which in our testing, proved to be pretty commendable for the price point. The voice was relayed clearly and it didn’t sound distorted or distant as some entry to mid-range gaming headset microphones do. However, a fair amount of external sounds are picked up by the microphone and relayed to your teammates, so ensure to sit in a relatively quiet room to get the best experience.

Alienware 310H Gaming Headset

As mentioned before, there’s also cross-platform compatibility, which is pretty common now but is a nice feature to have nevertheless. The quick mute switch on the inline remote is also pretty useful and works well, in a jiffy. All in all, the Alienware 310H ditches the frills and sticks to the basics.

Performance

Equipped with custom-tuned 50mm drivers for Hi-Res Audio, the Alienware 310H have a frequency response from 20Hz to 40kHz. The headset employs Alienware’s Immersive Audio Technology to power its gaming performance. The headset has pretty decent sound quality for gaming, however, there are some issues.

First, let’s talk about the positive. Soundtracks and songs within games sound pretty good on these headphones. Sounds such as explosions are impactful as well. The imaging on these headphones is pretty stellar, and you’ll be able to pinpoint the direction the enemy is coming from based on cues such as footsteps. Do keep in mind that these are stereo headphones, so you won’t get a surround sound effect.

Alienware 310H Gaming Headset

However, the bass response is pretty exaggerated on these headphones, so in FPS games gunshots sound slightly boomy and due to that it can be slightly difficult to pinpoint the location. Being closed-back headphones, the soundstage is slightly limited and the immersiveness is cut down because of this shortcoming. We played Valorant using this headset. The experience was decent, however, we wish that the gunshots sounded a bit more impactful.

Listening to music and watching TV shows or films with this headset is a decent overall experience. The sound is dynamic and lively, however, the exaggerated bass response can make the headset sound a bit too dark and broody at times. Overall, it is a decent sounding mid-range headset, especially if you don’t play a lot of FPS games.

Verdict

Priced at Rs 8,249, the Alienware 310H offers decent value for money. It has a robust build and comfortable fit, allowing gamers to play for hours on end without any overbearing discomfort. The headset isn’t the best-sounding for FPS games since the gunshots sound too boomy, however, for other genres of games the headset is pretty competent, with good imaging and dynamic sound. The soundstage is a bit narrow, but that is expected due to its closed-back design. If you want a mid-range gaming headset with a minimalist look, this headset is a decent option. Another compelling option at this price range is the JBL Quantum 400 which comes with slightly better sound quality and software support.

Strategy guide to Call of Duty: Mobiles new Reclaim map

Call of Duty: Mobile’s Season 1 New Order update is here. With it comes a brand new multiplayer map called Reclaim. The new map is a relatively small urban map designed around an abandoned shopping area. It should also be noted that, like Cage, this map is original to Call of Duty: Mobile and hasn’t appeared on any other game in the series before.

Initially, the new can be quite intimidating as the player can come under fire mere seconds after a game starts. Don’t worry though, as we have compiled a list of five things you should know to win in Reclaim.

Understand the layout of Reclaim

The entire map can be divided into two parts. There is the path of the ground floor, and an elevated walkway on the level above. Both the team’s Spawn areas feature advertising boards that allow for cover. However, the open sections allow for a straight shot to the enemy spawn, making it a sniper’s dream. There are some kiosks in the middle that offer some cover to players. In the middle, there are shops on each side where players can duck in and catch their breath. But do keep in mind that

Both teams can access the upper floor by way of a ladder or stairs. The upstairs section offers extremely tight combat, but also gives a bird’s eye view of the whole map. It also gives players the chance to get a drop on the enemy. As such, controlling this section is very important, which is why fighting here can be fierce. Thankfully this place as plenty of cover and players also have the option of going prone to get a breather.

Get those grenades

The urban nature of the map makes Tactical grenades a very good option as placing those at key locations like at the top of stairs or around corners. Area Denial grenades like Cryo grenades or Molotov Cocktails can also be used to impede enemy access to the key upper floor areas. In order to combat these grenades, perks like Flak Jacket and Hard Wired might be quite useful. Speaking of perks…

Get the right Perks

The frenetic action in Reclaim makes it very important to have the right perks in order to get that all important edge over opponents. We have already mentioned the benefits of the Flak Jacket and Hard Wired perks, that will help you avoid getting blown up by grenades. The Tracker perk will help you see enemy footprints and sneak up behind them. Fast Recovery and Quick Fix are ideal for rushers as they can maintain their health better. Another useful perk would be Persistence as dying in Reclaim is inevitable. Do keep in mind with Persistence, you will have to push extra hard in order to reach the high score requirements for each scorestreak.

Be smart with Scorestreaks

The small nature of the map make the use of certain Scorestreaks quite tricky. For example, The XS-1 Goliath mech suit and the Care Package require players to stand still for a few seconds. In a map like Reclaim, that is pretty much a deathwish. It also raises the possibility of enemies stealing the Scorestreak. You also have The VTOL and the MQ-27 Dragonfire that leaves the player vulnerable, but can be devastating if used correctly. As such, automated scorestreaks like the Cluster Strike, Stealth Helicopter, and Sentry Turret can be quite useful. Even something as simple as a UAV or Counter-UAV can be quite handy.

Use Operator Skills wisely

A small map like Reclaim will see enemies quite close to one another. As such, Operator Skills that can do damage to a lot of enemies at the same time can be devastating. If you can get the drop on the enemy, then the Purifier and Shadow Blade can be deadly. For a more direct approach, try the Equaliser that can hit enemies at range. If you have reached Tier 14 in the Season 1 New Order Battle Pass, then you can get the Gravity Vortex Gun than can be devastating to tightly packed groups of enemies.

Airtel gained more new users than Reliance Jio for four consecutive months: TRAI

Bharti Airtel continues to get more new subscribers over market leader Reliance Jio for the fourth consecutive month in November 2020. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India released a report on Thursday, revealing that the telco has added 4.37 million new users, while other telcos including Vodafone Idea (Vi), BSNL, and MTNL - saw a decline in the number of new subscribers.

As per TRAI's data, Bharti Airtel's subscriber base rose to 334.65 million after adding 4.37 million new users in November, while Reliance Jio stood at 408.29 million users after adding 1.93 million new users in the same month.

Reliance Jio, despite holding the largest share of users, ranks third in the number of active users. Out of Jio's 408.29 million subscribers, the active user base stood at 79.55%, while Airtel and Vi's active users were at 89.01% and 96.63%, respectively.

A decline in subscribers for other telcos

While the market leaders recorded a rise in the number of subscribers, Vi and state-owned telcos MTNL and BSNL struggled in November 2020. TRAI data shows that Vi lost 2.89 million users reducing its subscriber base to 289.94 million. Although BSNL added 556 new mobile users, MTNL lost 6,016 users.

Although Airtel has surpassed Jio to get more new users, Jio still remains the market leader with 35.34% market share with the highest number of users. Airtel holds 28.97% share at the second spot while Vi's market share shrunk to 25.10%, while BSNL and MTNL had 10.3% and 0.3% share, respectively.

That means the private players held 89.41% market share whereas the two PSU access service providers - BSNL and MTNL had a market share of only 10.59 per cent as of November 30, 2020, as per TRAI data.

In other news, Airtel is taking on Jio in terms of operational success in 5G networks. Airtel announced that it has successfully demonstrated its Airtel 5G networks in Hyderabad.

Honor plans on releasing a folding phone line called the Magic series this year

Honor, which was the former subsidiary of the Huawei conglomerate, is now all set to enter the market with its foldable device lineup called “Magic”. All the folding devices from this brand will be released under the “Magic” series.

A tipster on Weibo shared a post earlier this week stating that Honor is planning on launching a new foldable smartphone. The device is part of the Magic lineup. The previous CEO of Honor, Zhao Ming, had delivered news about the company launching a flagship series like Huawei Mate and Huawei P series under the Honor brand.

Honor could launch foldable phone under the Magic series

Honor had always been a budget device manufacturer since its inception. And now, after the change in ownership of the company, they are all set to release a premium flagship smartphone lineup for the first time. Huawei has already released a foldable phone in the market called the Huawei Mate X. Given the recent acquisition, it may be possible that the new Magic series might just be its counterpart.

Honor, after its separation from Huawei, had also released the first phone called V40 in the market. The V40 is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+. It also comes with 8GB RAM as a base, making it one of the flagship phones from the company. Motorola unveils air charging technology that charges multiple phones wirelessly

After Xiaomi officially announced the Mi Air Charge technology earlier today, Motorola also showcased its prototype for remote wireless charging called Motorola One Hyper. However, Motorola’s system is different from that of Xiaomi, in that, the phones and the wireless charging dock should not have any kind of interference in between.

A video demonstrating the charging technology was posted on Weibo by Chen Jin, General Manager at Lenovo China. In the video, it can be seen that the charging system can charge smartphones at upto one meter but there is a safeguard built on for when a person gets in between the charging unit and the phones. The charging process immediately stops after a person puts their hand in front of the dock.

Moreover, Jin called Motorola’s air to air charging system better than the current Qi wireless charging system as multiple smartphones can be charged simultaneously. Jin also asked users on Weibo whether the company should add this charging technology in the future Edge series.

Motorola showcases its own air charging system

In a separate post, Jin highlighted that the safeguard in place has been developed keeping in mind the health of users. “It is a safety protection provided when the human body is detected at the transmitting end of the charger with higher power,” Jin added (machine translated).

Other than the video, Motorola has not officially released any further details about its wireless charging technology. This could indicate that the technology is still under development and not yet ready for commercial use.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s over-the-air charging technology is capable of delivering wireless power to devices over a distance of a couple of meters from the isolated charging pile. This charging pile has 5 phase interference antennas to accurately determine the position of your mobile device. The 144 antennas transmit the millimetre-wide waves through beamforming. The receiving device has a built-in beacon antenna that converts it into electric energy through a rectifier circuit. You can read more about it here.

Apple tops global smartphone shipments in Q4 2020, sees double digit growth in India

Apple has come to the top spot in terms of global smartphone shipments in Q4 2020. Research firm Counterpoint has released its Q4 2020 report, which suggests that the Covid-19 impact quieted in the last quarter and phone makers witnessed stable quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) growth in shipment numbers.

According to Counterpoint , total smartphone shipment in the last quarter crossed 395 million, and Apple managed to ship 81.9 million units, grabbing 21% of the market share and seeing a QoQ growth of 96%. Apple's speedy growth is credited to the iPhone 12 -series's popularity and the demand for iPhone 11.

The Cupertino-based tech giant is followed by Samsung, which shipped 62.5 million smartphones, holding 16% of the global market share. Samsung saw a 22% QoQ decline. Samsung's demand is said to take a hit due to competition from Chinese brands in the budget and mid-range and Apple in the premium segment.

The research firm reports that the global smartphone market declined 1% YoY in Q4 2020, but the market rose 8% QoQ in Q4 2020. The numbers are definitive indicators that the market has started recovering from the pandemic-impact.

India was a key market for Apple's growth

India has turned out to be one of the key markets for Apple and the company has registered double-digit growth in India for iPhones in the festive season (October-December), the company's CEO Tim Cook has announced today.

"We grew double digits in emerging markets led by strong performances in Brazil, mainland China, India, Thailand, and Turkey," Cook told analysts after declaring all-time high revenue for Apple's fiscal 2020 first quarter.

The double-digit growth is being attributed to the demand for iPhone 11 and iPhone XR, which witnessed a huge demand.

Chinese smartphone brands stood in the green zone

The Counterpoint report says that the Chinese OEMs have also witnessed growth in the last quarter of 2020. A relatively new name Realme Realme became the fastest growing brand globally, growing 65% YoY in shipment volume.

Xiaomi's global shipment, on the other hand, increased 31% YoY to 43 million units in Q4 2020. Oppo increased 8% YoY and 10% QoQ to achieve 9% market share, with 34 million units shipped in Q4 2020.

Counterpoint notes that Oppo and Vivo have surpassed Huawei for the first time to capture fourth and fifth spots in terms of global market share, respectively. Despite taking massive blow due to component shortage and US trade ban , Huawei still managed to acquire the third spot in the calendar year 2020. Samsung topped the table with 255.7 million units, and Apple stood second with 201.1 million shipments last year.

Call of Duty: Mobile Blitz Mode now available: Everything you need to know

Call of Duty: Mobile’s Season 1 update dropped just a few days ago. As with all other updates there are a host of new features, weapons and events that will roll out over time. Blitz Mode is one of the modes added to Battle Royale in Season 1. As the name would suggest, this is a faster version of the traditional Battle Royale mode on the game. Here’s everything you need to know about Blitz Mode.

Same Call of Duty: Mobile Map, But Smaller

Unlike Alcatraz, the map used in Call of Duty: Mobile’s Blitz mode will be the same Isolated map that is used in the standard version of the game. However, the play area will be much smaller, and its location will be randomised for each game. Not only that, but the circle will shrink at a faster rate than normal. This will lead to faster matches.

Fewer Players

Besides small maps, the total number of players has been reduced to 40. This makes sense, considering the much smaller map. The usual count of 100 players would just make the game way too hectic. However, this doesn’t mean that Blitz Mode is a walk in the park.

Call of Duty: Mobile's Season 1 update includes a number of Battle Royale-centric events

Limited Options

Call of Duty: Mobile’s new Blitz Mode is limited to Third-Person Perspective (TPP). Further, players can only play in squads of four players. Single and Doubles options have been removed for the mode. However, players can play alone or just with their friends by adding them to their room and then deselecting the ‘Fill The Squad’ option.

Limited Time Only

In a post on Reddit, the developers have stated that the new mode will only be available till February 4. However, the devs also noted that it would be available from February 19 till February 26. In the meantime, Call of Duty: Mobile will host Snipers Only mode from February 5 to February 11, and Warfare mode from February 12 to February 18.

Xiaomi aims to change the True Wireless Charging game with Mi Air Charge Tech

It looks like true wireless charging technology is here, as Xiaomi has just revealed the next step of wireless charging technology. As touted by the company, the Mi Air Charge Technology is a 5W charging system. It also wirelessly charges devices over-the-air. Yes, you read that right!

Normal inductive wireless charging has around there for quite some time now. Basically, Qi Wireless charging requires wireless charging pads on both the source and receiving device to power up. There have been a lot of enhancements in this segment. These include taking wireless charging from a mere 5W to 80W/120W. But, these upgrades were substantial rather than revolutionary. This new technology looks to be rather revolutionary as it does not require devices to be in close proximity.

Xiaomi announces over-the-air charging technology

The new technology is capable of delivering wireless power to devices over a distance of a couple of meters from the “self-developed isolated charging pile”. This charging pile has 5 phase interference antennas to accurately determine the position of your mobile device. The 144 antennas transmit the millimeter-wide waves through beam forming. The receiving device has a built-in “beacon antenna” that converts it into electric energy through a rectifier circuit.

This new technology has been dubbed Mi Air Charge Technology. And yes, the company claims it is not science fiction and will eventually be able to charge multiple devices simultaneously. It is just a prototype demo at this stage. It is not yet clear if the company will release this product commercially as there are other players in the market who faced structural and implementation problems. Also, the regulatory authorities will scrutinize this product over health reasons beyond.

Indian government extends ban on TikTok and 58 other banned apps: Report

The Indian government has extended the ongoing ban on TikTok and 58 other apps including the likes of Shareit, UC Browser, Mi Community, Clash of Kings and more. These apps were among the 59 apps that were banned in June 2020 in India as they were found to be “engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order.”

According to reports by LiveMint, Reuters and Medianama that cites sources in the know, the Indian government has issued fresh orders to the app companies as it remains unsatisfied with the responses provided by them over data security and privacy concerns. The apps banned to operate in India include TikTok, Shareit, UC Browser, Clash of Kings, Mi Community, WeChat, UC News, Weibo, Xender, Xiaomi Mi Video Call, ES File Explorer, CamScanner and more.

Indian Government ban TikTok

The Indian government issued new orders extending the ban on these apps in the week of January 18, the report states. TikTok, one of the premier names in the list of banned apps, has already started scaling back its operations from India after it retained all of its Indian staffers even with the ongoing ban.

In a statement to Medianama, a TikTok spokesperson said, “We have worked steadfastly to comply with the Government of India orders issued on June 29, 2020. We continually strive to make our apps comply with local laws and regulations and do our best to address any concerns they have. It is therefore disappointing that in the ensuing seven months, despite our efforts we have not been given a clear direction on how and when our apps could be reinstated. It is deeply regretful that after supporting our 2000+ employees in India for more than half a year, we have no choice but to scale back the size of our workforce. We look forward to receiving the opportunity to relaunch TikTok and support the hundreds of millions of users, artists, storytellers, educators and performers in India.”

Just last year, the Indian government has banned over 220 apps including the second wave of 118 apps that were restricted for use from September 2. PUBG Mobile was also among these 118 apps banned and while the developers of the popular battle royale game have announced an India-centric version of the game, it is yet to release it. It is unlikely that the launch of PUBG Mobile India may happen anytime soon, given that the government just extended the ban on the first wave of banned apps from 2020.

Airtel demonstrates 5G network ahead of commercial rollout

Airtel has just announced that it has successfully demonstrated its Airtel 5G networks in Hyderabad. Airtel is taking on Jio in terms of operational success in 5G networks. Jio had earlier announced its launch of 5G services in 2021.

Airtel states that it has successfully orchestrated operations of Airtel 5G and 4G networks concurrently. This is broadcast over a liberalized spectrum in the 1800 MHz band through the Non-Standalone network technology. The company says that their 5G network is capable of delivering up to 10x speeds. Compared to existing technologies, it allows users to download a movie in a couple of seconds on a 5G phone.

Airtel has started testing its own Airtel 5G networks in Hyderabad

Currently, Airtel is using Ericsson 4G (DSS) as its equipment partner to deliver its 4G and 5G networks. Existing technology-neutral spectrums in mid-bands (1800/2100/2300 MHz) and sub-GHz bands (800/900 MHz) help in this regard. The technology allows Airtel to operate the 4G and 5G networks dynamically over the same spectrum block. The company states that it can deploy 5G networks easily through means of a simple software upgrade. There is no need to go through tedious hardware and network structure remodelling. Basically, with no major increase in operational costs, it allows Airtel to roll out its 5G services.

Airtel stated that once they get the government approval and the right spectrum bands available in adequate quantity, they will be able to roll out the 5G network in the country in a matter of months. Airtel did not provide any specific timeline for the commercial rollout of the 5G network in the country.

“The moment we receive government approvals, and we have the right spectrum bands and in adequate quantities, we'll be able to roll this [5G] out immediately,” said Gopal Vittal, MD, and CEO, Bharti Airtel, during a virtual media briefing.
