Netflix breathes new life into the stale Terminator franchise with an animated series

After the travesty that was Terminator: Dark Fate, fans have all but abandoned the franchise. Created by James Cameron in the 80s, The Terminator was a dark look at a future war that spills out on to our timeline. The film saw massive success and a sequel pished the limits of filmmaking even further. T2: Judgement Day is one of the greatest films ever made, and it's easy to see why. The direction, writing, story and special effects all come together to create a sci-fi masterpiece. But, alas, the subsequent sequels toned down the violence to a PG-13 rating and forever ruined the franchise. But, there seems to be a sea change coming. Variety has just reported that there is a Terminator animated Netflix series in the works.

Terminator animated series announced by Netflix

There is no word on the production yet as it is still in its early stages of development. But, we do know that the series will be produced by Skydance. The project will also feature IG productions who have worked on Ghost in the Shell and Eden of the East. In a statement to Variety, John Derderian, Netflix’s vice president of Japan and anime said, “Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”

Netflix Terminator series in the works

It’s clear that Netflix are looking at really breaking the anime market with original shows like Castlevania and Dragon’s Dogma being some of the best on the platform. We’re also getting a new Pacific Rim animated series on Netflix. If you’re a fan of anime, we’ve also got a list of the best anime shows that you should definitely check out.

PS Plus subscribers to receive four free PS4 and PS5 games for the month of March

If you’ve managed to snag a sweet PS5 or own a reliable PS4, there are four reasons that should cheer you up. For subscribers of PS Plus, there are a whopping four games for free on the service for the month of March. Just last month we got Destruction AllStars, Control Ultimate Edition and Concrete Genie. This month though, Sony is giving PS Plus subscribers four great games such as the Final Fantasy 7 remake, Maquette, Remnant: From the Ashes and a VR game called Farpoint.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake:

A remake of one of the most beloved titles in gaming, FF7 is a joy to play. The game will be available for both the PS4 and PS5 (vis backwards compatibility). But, there is a bit of a downside to this offer though. The upgraded version for the PS will not be available for free and players will have to purchase the upgrade to experience the next-gen version of the game. For us PS4 plebs, we’re free to play the entire game.

Remnant: From the Ashes

If you’re a fan of mindless monster shoot’em up action, then you will love Remnant. The gameplay is solid, and it’s got great enemy design as well as some cool bosses. It is a co-op shooter, so you can call on a friend to kick some creature butt. The game will be playable on both the PS4 and the PS5.

Farpoint:

Farpoint is a VR FPS game that can be played using a DualShock controller. Blast your way through alien worlds and hideous enemies in a single-player campaign. After that, you can jump into multiplayer mode as well. The game is best played with the Aim controller.

Maquette:

Exclusive to the PS5, Maquette is a puzzle game with a first-person perspective. Developed by Annapurna Studios, you can expect a bit of pretentiousness and arty-farty nonsense with this game. If you’re into that sort of thing.

Sony experiences outages on the PlayStation Network with problems still persisting on select games

If you’ve been having difficulties starting up games on your PS4 or PS5, then the problem isn’t at your end. The PlayStation Network suffered an outage that began on Friday and seems to still be causing a few problems. If you own a PS Vita, PS4 or a brand-new PS5, just know that these platforms are going to be affected by the outage. According to reports by Engadget and The Verge, it seems that some games are affected while others remain fully playable.

Sony's PlayStation Network experiences outages on Friday and Saturday

An update on the PlayStation Network page states that ‘some services are experiencing issues’. Account management and the PlayStation store seem to be safe. The only category that seems to still be experiencing issues is Gaming and Social. Sony has had a few problems with the PlayStation Network, with the most notable being the 2011 PSN hack. While this isn't at the level of that issue, it is still a big problem. Engadget has reported that games like Minecraft and Call of Duty: Warzone were not accessible. On the other hand, Fortnite seemed to be running just fine.

Sony had also earlier experienced a short outage on PSN on February 10th. We’re not sure how bad the issue is, at the moment, but we should be hearing something regarding the problem soon. In the meantime, if you’re looking for a PS5 in India, you could be waiting till the second half of the year. You may want to read more about that here. And, in case you’ve already bought your PS5, you’ll be happy to hear that Sony is looking to grant users access to the locked M.2 expansion slot this summer via a firmware update. You can read more about that here.

Everything we know about the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Lite

Recently, an alleged Geekbench listing of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Lite was spotted on the benchmarking platform. The listing reveals some key details about the tablet that is supposedly a toned-down variant of the premium Galaxy Tab S7.

According to the listing, first spotted by MySmartPrice, the tablet will run Android 11 and will be powered by an octa-core chipset along with 4GB RAM. However, the listing does not come as a surprise as the tablet has been mentioned in other reports as well. One of such reports claimed that Samsung has been working on a mid-range tablet that will come in Wi-Fi, LTE and 5G variants.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Lite leaked specifications

Thanks to previous reports combined with the recent Geekbench listing reveal, we now have a clear picture of what the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite might offer.

The alleged Geekbench listing of model number SM-T736B corroborates with the previous report, which claimed that the 5G model of the tablet will have the same model number. It also revealed that other models are said to be named SM-T730 (Wi-Fi) and SM-T735 (LTE).

The Geekbench listing reveals that the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite 5G has scored 650 points in single and 1694 points in multi-core tests, respectively. As already mentioned, the listing also reveals that the Galaxy Tab 7 Lite will have 4GB of RAM and will run Android 11.

Other known specifications as per multiple reports include an Adreno 619 GPU and the CPU has a max clock speed of 2.21GHz, which drops a hint at Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G chipset as it also falls in the mid-range category.

There are some speculations making rounds that the tab might be named Tab S8e instead of S7 Lite 5G. Also, it is reported that Samsung may also launch a bigger variant of the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite as a Plus variant. The larger variant, however, is said to have the same hardware as the alleged Galaxy Tab S7 Lite, but a bigger display. For those unaware, Samsung launched the Plus variant of its flagship Tab S7 tablet as well. The Galaxy Tab S7 Lite is speculated to come out sometime in June this year.

Samsung currently has a dominant position in the Android tablet market, and especially premium tablets. In the past, we've seen multiple tablet options across segments from Samsung, which makes the existence of the S7 Lite even more likely.

Apart from this, Xiaomi has officially announced that the Redmi Note 10 series will be powered by Qualcomm's premium mid-range Snapdragon processors. While the company is yet to reveal the exact details about the processors powering the Redmi Note 10 series, it is expected that the Snapdragon 732G chip could make an appearance on one of the phones in the lineup. Reports suggest the standard Redmi Note 10 could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 processor which was launched back in December 2020.

Previous leaks have indicated that the Redmi Note 10 will arrive in three colours: White, Green and Grey and in two configurations of 4GB/6GB RAM and 6GB storage. Meanwhile, the Redmi Note 10 Pro is expected to be offered with 6GB/8GB RAM and 64GB/128GB storage options to choose from. Facebook introduces new music app inspired by TikTok called BARS

In a bid to capture the TikTok market, Facebook has introduced an app called BARS. Developed by the company’s NPE team, the app will function much like TikTok. It will give users the ability to record music with almost studio-like quality. Users will also have access to drum beats and loops that they can spit rhymes over. If it wasn't clear already, Facebook is looking at targeting the younger  demographic that listens to rap music. Even the term ‘bars’ refers to the lyrical content in a rap song. If anything, considering the popularity of hip-hop in India, we could see the app taking off.

Facebook introduces BARS, a TikTok-like app

The app also comes with an auto-suggest feature that will help rappers come up with better rhymes. It truly is the commodification of music, but what can you do? This was bound to happen at some point. The app will also come with auto-tune and other post-processing effects to really sell the ‘studio-like’ audio quality claim. Even as recently as June 2020, Facebook launched an app called Collab as a beta test on iOS. The app allowed different users to collaborate with each other on their music. It looks like Facebook is really going all in on the music aspect of these apps. How it actually turns out, only time will tell.

Facebook's BARS is a TikTok-like app aimed at rappers

It is understandable that Facebook would work on apps like BARS and Collab, given that most people have been working remotely for the past year. The pandemic has completely changed modern society and Facebook is looking at capitalizing on that. BARS is up on the Apple App store as closed beta. Only members of the team have uploaded videos to the app but anyone who wants to learn more about the app can download the app and sign up to have their name reserved for when it does fully launch.

Vivo S9 teased ahead of March 3 launch, colour variants and 44MP rear camera confirmed

It is no secret that the Vivo S9 is scheduled to launch on March 3. And ahead of its launch, the company has teased the device revealing the rear panel design of the Vivo S9 arriving on March 3. A quick look at the teaser reveals that the smartphone is similar in design to the Vivo S7 5G and sports a triple camera setup. The company has also confirmed that the phone will bring with itself a 44-megapixel selfie shooter.

Interestingly, the teaser also reveals details about another device, the Vivo S9e. The poster confirms that the company will launch the Vivo S9e with a 32-megapixel selfie camera. The teaser, however, does not confirm the launch date of the phone but since it has been teased alongside the S9, it is quite possible that it may be launched alongside the debut with the vanilla S9 on March 3.

Apart from this, the teaser also reveals other details about the Vivo S9, including the fact that it will be available in two colors. However, we've also seen the Vivo S9 being listed on the company's official China website before which confirmed that there will also be a third white-colored variant as well.

It is interesting to note that Vivo hasn't revealed the front design of both phones, or for the matter other specs of the device. All this still remains under wraps. However, reports have suggested that the Vivo S9 will come with a wide-notch. It could be a similar display to the one seen on its predecessor Vivo S7 5G. The Vivo S9e is expected to get a slightly different display with reports suggesting a waterdrop notch screen for the device. However, the displays on both phones are expected to feature FHD+ AMOLED panels with 90Hz refresh rate support.

Other than this, the Vivo S9 5G is expected to house a Dimensity 1100 chipset under the hood. This could be paired with up to 12 GB of RAM, and a 4,000mAh battery. In comparison, the Vivo S9e may feature a Dimensity 820 SoC, 8 GB of RAM, and a 4,100mAh battery. For battery, both will support 33W fast charging.

IT Rules 2021 and the need to regulate social media platforms: What it means for you

The Indian government has released the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 with an aim to regular social media platforms, digital media and OTT platforms. When the new rules come into effect, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp and more will have to ensure better checks and balances when it comes to user-generated content shared on their platforms. Similarly, the new rules also entail a three-tier content classification model for regulating OTT platforms like Netflix and Hotstar and you can read more about that separately here.

Essentially with the new IT Rules 2021, the Government of India is trying to regulate the digital media sphere and with it the content that is shared online. The new IT Rules are formed under the IT Act, 2000 and supersede the previous IT Rules 2011. The Ministry of Electronics and IT in its press release said that the “new Rules empower ordinary users of social media, embodying a mechanism for redressal and timely resolution of their grievance.”

Until now, digital media and OTT platforms have largely remained away from the ambit of any regulations courtesy of Section 79 of the IT Act which allows a safe harbour. However, in the past couple of years, the Indian government has been trying to put a leash on Big Tech companies as they look for larger accountability from them in the eye of challenges like fake news, misuse, violence spread of defamatory content and disruption of public order among others. The new rules are applicable to OTT platforms, digital media and social media at large and will be enforced by the Ministry of Electronics and IT and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Establishing grievance redressal system

Under the new IT Rules 2021, social media platforms have been asked to follow due diligence, the lack of which will mean that “safe harbour” provisions won’t apply to them. Furthermore, the government directs these companies to set up a grievance redressal mechanism for users to send in their complaints. “Intermediaries shall appoint a Grievance Officer to deal with such complaints and share the name and contact details of such officer. Grievance Officer shall acknowledge the complaint within twenty-four hours and resolve it within fifteen days from its receipt,” as per the new rules.

Though social media platforms have empowered users, yet they need accountability against its misuse and abuse. These Rules substantially empower the users to seek redressal for their grievances. Take a look to know more. #ResponsibleFreedom #OTTGuidelines pic.twitter.com/o5Z2brfnA8

— MyGovIndia (@mygovindia) February 25, 2021

The IT Rules 2021 also classify two kinds of social media platforms. There’s social media intermediaries and significant social media intermediaries, the latter being platforms with a large user base. The government also revealed that over 53 crore Indians use WhatsApp followed by over 44.8 Crore YouTube users, 41 Crore Facebook users, 21 Crore Instagram users and 1.75 Crore Twitter users. These could potentially be the kind of significant social media intermediaries that the government categorizes in the new rules.

Under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, what are the additional due diligence that needs to be followed by a significant Social Media Intermediary? Have a look! #ResponsibleFreedom #OTTGuidelines pic.twitter.com/VQwQCpoSKA

— MyGovIndia (@mygovindia) February 25, 2021

The significant social media intermediaries will be obliged to follow some additional measures that include appointing a Chief Compliance Offer, Nodal Contact Person and a Resident Grievance Officer in India. Apart from this, these platforms should also have a physical contact address in India which should be notified on the website and apps.

Identifying the source of information

A big red flag in the IT Rules 2021 is the Traceability aspect detailed by the government. In it, the government has asked social media platforms to enable “identification of the first originator of the information” which essentially means the source of the information/content. This will be applicable in the event of “prevention, detection, investigation, prosecution or punishment of an offence related to sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign states, or public order or of incitement to an offence relating to the above or in relation with rape, sexually explicit material or child sexual abuse material punishable with imprisonment for a term of not less than five years.”

However, take the example of an end-to-end encrypted app like WhatsApp or Signal which does not keep a track of messages sent or received by its users. What happens to such apps in case the government wants to know the source of a particular message? There is no clear answer to this yet. However, instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram have banked on their end-to-end-encryption features to offer privacy to their users time and again. When the new rules come into effect, it remains to be seen what measures do the social media giants take to safeguard the privacy of their users.

Amidst the concerns around lack of transparency, accountability & rights of users related to digital media, the IT Intermediary Guidelines & Digital Media Ethics Code Rules 2021 have been announced. Take a look to know some of the key details. #ResponsibleFreedom #OTTGuidelines pic.twitter.com/KKIIDMcEn3

— MyGovIndia (@mygovindia) February 25, 2021

The IT Rules 2021 also lay down the measures to remove content that is deemed “unlawful” by the government. The new rules state that social media companies are prohibited from hosting or publishing any unlawful information obtained “in relation to the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, public order, friendly relations with foreign countries etc.” after receiving a court order or government notification. Furthermore, the new rules ask social media platforms to inform users before removing or disabling access to the information posted by them. “Users must be provided an adequate and reasonable opportunity to dispute the action taken by the intermediary,” the rules state.

The IT Rules 2021 have been published in The Gazette of India which means that it is currently under effect except for some rules for significant social media intermediaries which will come in effect after three months. We have explained the new IT Rules for OTT platforms separately that you can read here.

JioPhone 2021 offer announced, promises 2 years of unlimited data and JioPhone at Rs 1,999

In a bid to bring new subscribers to its network, telecom operator Reliance Jio has today announced the new "JioPhone 2021 Offer" which will be available from March 1. The new offer is an extension of Jio's plans to upgrade millions of 2G users in India to the more advanced 4G baseband that the company's network operates on. Jio claims to have successfully upgraded more than 100 million users to its 4G platform to date. However, it now plans to upgrade three times this number to its 4G network with the help of its JioPhone 2021 offer.

Speaking about this new offer, Akash Ambani, Director, Reliance Jio, commented, "There are still 300 million subscribers in India who remain trapped in the 2G era, unable to access basic features of the internet, at a time, when the world stands at the cusp of a 5G revolution. Since the last 4 years, Jio has democratised the internet and passed on the benefits of technology to every Indian. Technology no longer remains a privilege of a select few. The New JioPhone 2021 offer is another step in that direction. At Jio, we have and will continue to take bold steps to eradicate this digital divide and welcome every Indian to join this movement."

What is the new JioPhone 2021 offer?

What is the new JioPhone 2021 offer?

Under the new JioPhone 2021 offer, the telecom operator is offering a JioPhone with 24 months of unlimited service at a one-time price of Rs 1,999. As part of the offer, new subscribers will be extended a number of benefits, including unlimited voice calls and 2GB high-speed data every day for a period of two years. In fact, the company is pegging this offer as one where the subscriber will not have to get a recharge for the first two years. The only cost associated will be the Rs 1,999 initial payment for the device.

Interestingly, Reliance Jio is also offering a one-year plan under the JioPhone 2021 offer. For this, subscribers will have to shell out Rs 1,499 as a one-time payment and in return, the telecom operator will provide them with the JioPhone device and 12 months of unlimited service which will include unlimited voice calls and 2GB of high-speed data daily for usage.

Additionally, Jio has also announced a plan for existing Jio users. Under this, existing JioPhone users can get the same 2GB daily data and unlimited calls for a year, but at a more affordable price of Rs 749. However, under this third plan, the company will not be bundling a free JioPhone for use as the plan can only be activated on existing JioPhone numbers.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Lite visits Geekbench with a Snapdragon 750G SoC

Geekbench is usually a very good platform to spot upcoming devices. A lot of unannounced devices including smartphones, laptops, and tablets visit Geekbench when someone ends up running the benchmark while testing it before the release. This time, a new Samsung tablet has shown up on Geekbench, revealing some key specifications.

The tablet in the discussion here is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Lite. It popped up on Geekbench with model number SM-T736B. This is said to be the 5G variant of the table, and it looks like Samsung will end up bringing the Wi-Fi and LTE variants too.

Looking at the listing, the tablet seems to be running on the Snapdragon 750G chip with a base frequency of 1.80Ghz. The SoC is coupled with 4GB RAM, and it is running on Android 11 OS. As you can see, the device has managed to show a single-core score of 650 and a multi-core score of 1694. Here, check it out -

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Geekbench

This is the same processor that's also powering some other phones like the Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G, Motorola Moto G 5G, and many others. It's a very capable processor, so it'll be interesting to see how the tablet will perform when it comes out.

This isn't the first time we're hearing about the Galaxy Tab S7, by the way. An earlier leak had pointed that the tablet will arrive with a 12.4-inch display, and it will be packed with some good features like 5G support and Samsung's Galaxy Continuity that lets users use the tablet as a secondary device with a Galaxy phone.

The Galaxy Tab S7 Lite should be an interesting offering considering the fact that the original Galaxy Tab S7 and the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus were excellent devices. The Galaxy Tab S7 Lite is speculated to come out sometime in June this year, so let's wait till we get more info about the device leading up to its launch.

Sony will reportedly unlock the PS5s SSD in the summer of 2021

The PS5 comes with 825GB SSD storage with a mere 667GB available to the user. This means you can have no more than a few games on the internal SSD at a given time. Most popular AAA games are about 40-50GB in size, with games like Call of Duty crossing the 100GB barrier. The PS5 (review) has an M.2 expansion slot, but the expansion option was locked when the console launched. According to a Bloomberg report, Sony is looking to grant users access to the expansion slot this summer via a firmware update.

According to the Bloomberg report, “Adding support for additional drives will be enabled with a firmware update that also unlocks higher cooling-fan speeds to ensure the console doesn’t overheat, the people said, asking not to be named because the plans are not yet public”. So, it looks like in addition to granting users access to the expansion options, Sony could also increase the cooling fan’s speed to ensure the drive doesn’t get too hot.

Sony could unlock PS5 SSD storage M.2 drive

Considering the fast speed of the PS5’s SSD, users will have to check for compatibility before investing in an M.2 drive. During the GDC 2020 PS5 talk, Lead System Architect for the PS5 Mark Cerny said that M.2 drivers were being tested for compatibility. We think Sony will shed light on the required specifications for the expansion drive before releasing the update. While the PS5 does support an external USB 3 drive, it is only to store and playback PS4 games. Users cannot use it to back up PS5 games, which is a bummer.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has gone with a proprietary approach. The proprietary 1TB expansion card for the Xbox Series X/S costs a whopping Rs 23,499 in India. To put things into perspective, the Xbox Series S is priced at Rs 34,990. However, Xbox gamers can back up Xbox Series X (review) games to an external drive and copy them back to the internal drive when they want to play the games, adding a bit of convenience to those that don't want to invest in the native storage expansion.

Both Sony and Microsoft have launched their respective consoles in India, but both of them will be scarce for the foreseeable future. You can learn why, here.

Google tipped to release new foldable Pixel phone, likely to launch by the end of this year

The foldable phone segment is surely picking up pace. Over the past two years, we've seen a number of new foldable phones being launched, with players such as Samsung and Motorola coming out with their own products in the market. And now, it looks like another big player will soon enter the fray with its own foldable phone.

As per a new leak, this player will be Google, with the leak confirming that the tech giant is indeed working on a foldable Pixel phone. The information comes courtesy of trusted tipster, Jon Prosser, who has claimed in a tweet that the rumoured Google Pixel foldable smartphone, rumoured to launch in the fourth quarter of 2021, is indeed real. Prosser has not shared an exact timeline for the launch of the device, however, he has claimed that the foldable phone will be launched towards the end of this year or early next year.

Google foldable phone could be coming soon

Interestingly, this is not the first time we are hearing about a foldable phone from Google. Earlier this week reports had emerged claiming that Samsung will produce OLED displays for foldable phones from Google, Xiaomi, and OPPO. As for the Google foldable phone, it could be codenamed ‘Passport.'

Reports suggest Google has been working on this foldable Pixel device since 2019. Earlier, a patent had also emerged showing the foldable smartphone prototype design featuring a display that would fold inwards. This Google Pixel phone with a folding screen is tipped to get a 7.6-inch screen size, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. Since the Google Pixel line-up is expected to feature mid-range hardware, this foldable phone may also adopt a similar strategy. Or it's entirely possible that Google equips this device with a flagship chipset.

While information about this foldable phone is scarce, we expect the display to have a high refresh rate like the Galaxy Z Fold 2. For now, we can only wait for more details to emerge about the phone, which considering how things are going, shouldn't take much time.

Frameworks new modular laptop will let you replace its old parts for easy upgrades

One of the main reasons why many users prefer buying desktops over laptops is because they aren't very upgradeable. Even the most upgrade-friendly laptops will only let you swap out the storage or the RAM. There's always a limit on what one can replace from a laptop and that's exactly why exceptions are always welcome.

This is where a new company called Framework comes into the picture. They just announced a new laptop called the Framework Laptop, which according to them is a fully upgradeable thin-and-light laptop. Here's how it looks -

The laptop sports a 13.5-inch display on the front with slim bezels, and it runs on an 11th Gen Intel Core processor. The laptop also supports up to 64GB DDR4 RAM and 4TB or more of Gen4 NVMe storage. You also get a 1080p webcam on the front and a 55Wh battery.

The specs of the laptop, as you can see, are quite commendable for a thin-and-light notebook. The highlight of the machine, however, is the fact that you can swap out most of the components for a better one whenever they are available.

Yes, you can customize the laptop's ports, storage, memory, battery, display, keyboard, and more. Heck, you can even replace the entire mainboard to boost performance as they launch updated versions with newer generation CPUs. That's quite an impressive value proposition and makes it very rare in the world on non-upgradeable laptops.

Framework modular laptop

Users can also pick and choose the components that they want to go into the machine. For instance, you can tell Framework the kind of ports you want and which side of the laptop you want them on. Now, who doesn't want to pick and choose the ports and say goodbye to dongles?

The ability to swap out components also makes it very easy to repair. If you end up breaking, say, the display of the notebook. You'll then be able to simply order a replacement screen and put it together yourself.

Framework will be selling different configurations of the laptop running Windows 10 Home or Pro. If you feel like assembling your laptop just like how you would assemble a desktop, then you can also get the Framework Laptop DIY Edition.

It's worth pointing out that Framework isn't the first company to sell the idea of modular machines. We've seen this across various product categories. Google's now-defunct Project Ara is probably what comes to your mind when you think of a modular design in technology. Framework, however, seems to be committed to executing this properly in the laptop space and it'll be interesting to see how it works out when it launches this spring.

Govt frames new rules for OTTs such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar

The Government of India has announced plans for a new regulatory framework to govern OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hotstar. Under the new rules, these popular streaming services will face stricter rules over the content they can host on their platforms. The regulatory framework called Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 makes a number of suggestions, among which is a 3-tier content classification model for regulating OTTs.

Self-regulation for OTTs: How it will work

Under this, the streaming platforms will have to self-classify content under U (universal), 7+, 13+, 16+, and A (adult) categories. Apart from the classification of content, platforms will also be required to implement parental locks for content classified as U/1 13+ or higher. They will also have to put in place a reliable age verification mechanism for Adult rated content.

The framework also suggests the setting up of a regulatory body for grievance redressal. This body, the government suggests, should be headed by a "retired Supreme Court, High Court Judge or a very eminent person in this category". Although this panel won't take any action, it will oversee the censoring of content available on web streaming platforms.

The power to take down content will rest with the regulatory officer who will form the tip of this 3-tier system. This regulatory officer working on the suggestions of the panel mentioned above can order the taking down any show or movie streamed on a social media platform. For now, the government has announced a timeline for the implementation of this draft framework. However, considering the process has been set in motion, we can expect swift progress in the next few weeks.

Further, the central government has also announced new rules to govern social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter. The new rules will regulate social media content and most importantly require platforms to take unlawful content quicker. As per the new rules, the government will ask the platform to reveal the originator of a post or tweet and take the objectionable post down within 24-hours of the order. The government has also proposed voluntary verification of users and a compliance officer as well as grievance officer. Further, it has also asked the social media platforms to appoint a 24x7 point of contact.

Twitter will soon let you charge your followers for your tweets with Super Follows

Twitter has been dabbling with the idea of introducing a subscription model and a "tipping" option to have more meaningful revenue streams for its platform. This has been one area in which it has been lagging behind its competitors. Now, the company has confirmed that it is indeed working on some new products to fill this gap.

Super Follows

During Twitter's virtual Analyst Day, the company announced that it is bringing a new feature called 'Super Follows'. This is essentially a paid subscription model that charges members for exclusive content from accounts they follow.

Twitter introduces Super Followers

With this feature, for instance, a user can pay a set amount of money to receive perks like exclusive tweets, subscribers-only newsletters, and more. Twitter gave an example of how an influencer can compile a bunch of tweets that would only be pushed out to their Super Followers.

It's a very good way to make for both veterans Twitter users with huge following and influence, as well as for Twitter. We can totally see this feature being used extensively by influencers to, say, give a sneak-peak to their followers of upcoming products. Twitter will most likely tie-up its other features like the new Twitter Spaces, etc. to this new model and allow people to make money off their content.

Communities

In addition to the 'Super Follows', Twitter also announced 'Communities', which is similar to Facebook Groups. With Communities, Twitter will allow its users to follow and engage with a particular topic more easily. If you want to be a part of a particular conversation like cats, social justice, etc. then this new feature will prove to be very useful.

Twitter announces Communities, like Facebook Groups but on Twitter (they’ve started working on it in the web app since at least few weeks ago) https://t.co/5YBmEfgsUn pic.twitter.com/JlkrZNjLBo

— Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane) February 25, 2021

This feature will also easily tie into Super Follows and allow users to be a part of an exclusive influencer community.

Twitter hasn't given us an exact timeline for the release of these new features just yet. But given how prompt they are with pushing out the new features like voice DMs to their users, we expect these new products to arrive sooner rather than later.

NVIDIA launches RTX 3060 in India Stocks similar to RTX 3060 Ti

NVIDIA has launched the RTX 3060, the youngest member of the RTX 30-series Ampere graphics cards but with more memory (12 GB) that the more powerful RTX 3060 Ti (8 GB). There will be no Founders Edition cards for the RTX 3060 so all of those GPUs have been allocated to board partners. Industry sources tell us that the stock situation for the RTX 3060 is similar to that of the RTX 3060 Ti. At the same time, NVIDIA's retail partner, RPTech has unlisted the RTX 3060 Ti from their official website. As of now, we do not know what this means for the RTX 3060 Ti. Whether it will be restocked, remains to be seen.

The RTX 3060 is a mid-range graphics card that's targetted at folks who own 900-series and 10-series graphics cards and supposedly offers 30% more performance than the RTX 2060 in rasterised and ray-traced video games. Listings for the graphics card have already gone up on several online stores with no official pricing being mentioned. Folks wanting to purchase the card will have to individually reach out to the stores to get the latest prices. The previously launched RTX 3060 Ti cards have been selling for nearly twice the stated MRP in India. The international price for the RTX 3060 is USD 329 (Approx INR 28,185 with taxes).

NVIDIA RTX 3060 Specifications

Rumours had indicated a weaker RTX 3060 prior to the launch of AMD's RX 6000 series GPUs. It would have had fewer SMs and equal or lesser memory than the RTX 3060 Ti. Thankfully, we now have an RTX 3060 that has 28 Streaming Multiprocessors which give us 3584 CUDA cores. They also include 112 3rd Gen Tensor Cores, 28 2nd Gen RT cores and a 192-bit memory interface.  Essentially, you have a narrower bus addressing a much larger chunk of memory. Benchmarks should peg the card at about 75-80% of what the RTX 3060 Ti is capable of at 1080p.

NVIDIA RTX 3060 12GB Graphics Card GPU Block Diagram Ampere

Here are the specifications of the RTX 3060 compared against the RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 2060 Super and GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5.

Model RTX 3060 Ti RTX 3060 RTX 2060 Super GTX 1060 GPU GA104-200-A1 GA106-400-A1 TU106-410-A1 GP106-400-A1 CUDA Cores 4864 3584 2176 1280 Boost Clock 1410 MHz 1320 MHz 1470 MHz 1506 MHz Memory 8 GB 12 GB 8 GB 6 GB Memory Type GDDR6 GDDR6 GDDR6 GDDR5 Memory Clock 14 GHz 14 GHz 14 GHz 8 GHz Memory Bus 256-bit 192-bit 256-bit 192-bit Bandwidth 448 GB/s 336 GB/s 448 GB/s 192 GB/s TGP 200 W 170 W 175 W 120 W Process Samsung 8NM Samsung 8NM TSMC 12nm TSMC 16nm

It certainly seems like a worthwhile upgrade for folks who currently own a GTX 1060 or older graphics card whereas RTX 2060 Super owners can stay with their existing GPUs until the next major GPU launch happens.

While the RTX 3060 is expected to sport a more economical price tag compared to the RTX 3060 Ti, we don't expect to see Indian retailers selling it at the stated MRP any time soon. The stated MRP is USD 329 which with taxes comes out to around INR 28,185 but it's extremely unlikely that we'll see cards selling at that price. The global chip shortage problem is expected to last for another year and will only start easing up in the latter part of this year. So don't be surprised to see exhorbitantly priced graphics cards for the next couple of months. NVIDIA is certainly doing their part by trying to provide founders edition cards in India at affordable rates via their retail partners, RPTech. However, only 10-40 cards are stocked around once every month or so. Moreover, the infrastructure has been shown to be barely sufficient to handle the web traffic load when the cards do go on stock.

NVIDIA Partner unlists RTX 3060 Ti

As of today, RPTech has unlisted the RTX 3060 Ti from the website. You can still get to the RTX 3060 Ti page if you have the direct URL. It remains to be seem if the card will be restocked again.

RPTech unlists RTX 3060 Ti from the storefront

The card was recently stocked on the 15th with about 40 units available on the day of sale and saw the portal crash multiple times througout the day.

Realme 8 series teased for India launch, could feature 108MP cameras

After launching the Narzo 30 series in India, Realme has now teased the launch of its upcoming Realme 8 series in the country. The series has been teased by the company's India CEO, Madhav Sheth, who took to Twitter to share this information.

While the company explicitly doesn't mention the series in its tweet, the tweet does enough to hint that the company is teasing the Realme 8 phones. The cryptic tweet mentions a #InfiniteLeapWith8 which is a good enough hint that the company is hinting at the Realme 7 successor. Interestingly, the tweet also hints that the upcoming series could offer 108MP cameras as it has an attached image that mentions 108MP cameras. Although we're not sure if all models will feature 108MP cameras, it is expected that at least one of the models will house this lens. For now, the company hasn't revealed any more details, but the company has promised more details tomorrow.

A great breakthrough ahead! Do you guys know what 108 stands for? Stay tuned, unveiling tomorrow.#InfiniteLeapWith8 #DareToLeap pic.twitter.com/fD8B3WFHOd

— Madhav FutureX (@MadhavSheth1) February 25, 2021 Realme 8 specifications and features

The phone's core hardware will be tasked to run an Android 10 OS-based copy of the RealmeOS. However, it can be expected that the company may upgrade it to Android 11 at the time of launch.

Apart from this, the Realme 8 has also been listed on China’s 3C certification. The listing revealed that the phone will come with 65W fast-charging support. The phone is also expected to come with support for 5G. The Realme 8 series could offer two phones, however, there's currently no information available about the hardware of the Pro variant which could be launched alongside the vanilla Realme 8 in a few weeks.

Samsung seems to be gearing up for the launch of the Galaxy A32, Galaxy A52, and Galaxy A72 in India

Samsung have released some incredible phones in the budget and mid-range segment in India under the Galaxy A and Galaxy M series. The company has also slashed the prices of some of its mid-range phones in the country, which we think is a subtle hint at the arrival of some new devices.

Now, we have come across some more info that all but confirms the launch of the Galaxy A32, Galaxy A52, and the Galaxy A72 here in India. The folks over at Sammobile spotted the support pages for the Galaxy A32 4G (SM-A325F/DS), Galaxy A32 5G (SM-A326B/DS), Galaxy A52 (SM-A525F/DS), and the Galaxy A72 (SM-A72F/DS) on its Indian website.

The sheer existence of these pages makes us believe that these phones will soon be made official in India. That being said, it is worth pointing out that Samsung has not listed support pages for the Galaxy A52 5G and the Galaxy A72 5G yet. This means that Samsung may or may not launch those devices in India. We'll definitely be seeing the support pages from them go live soon if they're on the cards.

We are already quite familiar with the Galaxy A32 since it has already been launched in various markets worldwide. The Galaxy A52 and the Galaxy A72, however, are the devices that haven't been made official anywhere yet. It will be interesting to see what kind of hardware they will bring to the table.

As for the Galaxy A32 5G, it is touted to be Samsung's cheapest 5G smartphone yet. It features a 6.5-inch HD+ Infinity-V LCD screen, a MediaTek Dimensity 720 5G processor, a 48-megapixel quad-camera setup at the back, and more. Its 4G variant, listed as the Galaxy A32 4G (SM-A325F/DS), is rumoured to be powered by the MediaTek Helio G85 processor.

Although the Galaxy A52 and the Galaxy A72 aren't official yet, we have a good idea of what to expect from the phones. Both phones are expected to bring a high refresh rate panel, making them the first set of phones to do so in this price segment for Samsung. In fact, the Galaxy A52 5G variant may even have a 120Hz panel since it'll be powered by a more powerful processor.

The key difference between the Galaxy A52 4G and the Galaxy A72 4G will be screen size and battery capacity. While the Galaxy A52 is expected to sport a 6.5-inch screen and a 4,500mAh battery, the Galaxy A72 is said to come with a 6.7-inch screen and a 5,000mAh battery. Other rumoured features for these phones include a 64-megapixel quad-camera system, an in-display fingerprint reader, a USB Type-C port, and 25W fast charging.

OnePlus next affordable phone could be called OnePlus 9R instead of OnePlus 9E9 Lite

In addition to launching some flagship killer phones, OnePlus has decided to dip its toes in the affordable phone market too. We already have a couple of budget OnePlus phones on the market, and it looks like the company ready to bring out more. If you are keeping tabs on the rumors, then you probably have a good idea about the upcoming OnePlus budget phone and its specs.

Adding on to that, the reliable tipster Evan Blass has now leaked the moniker OnePlus 9R. According to him, this is going to be the next OnePlus budget phone. He claims to have spotted a source code that mentions the name OnePlus 9R. Here, check it out -

Hello, OnePlus 9R: https://t.co/0ARy9HiUXW

— Evan Blass (@evleaks) February 24, 2021

His short post on Voice, as you can see, doesn't reveal much about the phone itself. It only gives us the name of the device which was earlier rumoured to be called the OnePlus 9E/9 Lite. "Goodbye OnePlus 9E/9 Lite...", the post says. It's worth pointing out that this is the same phone that is expected to hit the market alongside the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro.

As for the specifications of this particular device, we already have a decent idea of what to expect. Thanks to all the leaks and rumours, we are expecting the phone to come with a 6.5-inch 90Hz display with an FHD+ resolution. The Snapdragon 690 SoC is said to be at the heart of this phone alongside 8GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage.

OnePlus could launch the OnePlus 9R as an affordable option

For optics, the OnePlus 9R is tipped to come equipped with a 64MP primary camera and an 8MP wide-angle lens. Given the affordable price tag that it is expected to come with, we don't expect this particular phone to have any Hasselblad camera integration like the OnePlus 9 Pro. The handset is also said to come with a 5,000 mAh battery, but that's all we know about the OnePlus 9R for now.

The OnePlus 9R, for those of you who don't know, is expected to come out alongside the highly anticipated OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro next month. Both of those phones are expected to carry a powerful set of specs and features including the Snapdragon 888 SoC, 65W fast-charging support, and more.
