Nintendo denies rumours of Switch Pro

Nintendo recently unveiled a new version of its popular Switch console called the Switch OLED. The new version offered an OLED display with thinner bezels, larger internal storage and more. However, there were initial reports that the Japanese company was planning to launch an even more powerful version of its console with support for 4K gaming. With the launch of the Switch OLED, it looks like those rumours were nothing more than that. Or was it?

A report by Bloomberg seems to suggest that the ‘Switch Pro’ may have existed, at least for a time. The publication claims that 11 game companies were in possession of Nintendo’s 4K development kit for the Switch. It further adds that these companies were from all around the globe and ranged from large publishers to small studios. The report calls out Zynga Inc. as being one of the companies.

Nintendo refutes rumours

However, since the story has been published, both Zynga and Nintendo have tried to squash the rumours. Zynga spokesperson, Sarah Ross, stated, “to clarify, Zynga does not have a 4K developer kit from Nintendo.”

Bloomberg also claims to have reached out to Nintendo with a list of questions. The Japanese company responded by stating that Bloomberg’s reporting is “inaccurate,” but declined to specify which parts of the information it was referring to.

Nintendo has also posted a tweet refuting the rumours. The company notes that the “report is not true”. It further added that it has “no plans” to launch a new model other than the Nintendo Switch OLED.

A news report on Sept. 30, 2021(JST) falsely claims that Nintendo is supplying tools to drive game development for a Nintendo Switch with 4K support. To ensure correct understanding among our investors and customers, we want to clarify that this report is not true. (1/2)

Your Gmail avatar is about to get much brighter

If you’ve always felt a little restricted by the options available to you for your Gmail photos, you’ll be glad to know that Gmail’s latest update is going to help you get a brighter, more customised avatar. Google announced the availability of these avatars on Monday, stating that they are more inclusive and easy to tweak so that users can represent themselves the way they want to.

Your Gmail Avatar Is Going To Get Brighter

What are Gmail Avatars?

Gmail avatars are little pictures that show up on your Gmail ID. These pictures are called Google Illustrations, and are available within a variety of styles and colours for users to pick and choose. These Gmail avatars are a great option for those who want some form of representation on their Gmail ID, but are not comfortable with putting photographs of themselves. In fact, there are many cultures where sharing photographs of one’s face is frowned upon, especially for women, and this move might help customers from such cultures feel adequately represented on the emailing app.

What are Gmail Avatars?

How do Gmail Avatars work?

You can choose from a range of categories such as space, animals, instruments, gardening, beaches, team sports, mountains, games, historical sites and more. In order to apply the Google Illustration as your photo, you simply need to click the profile icon on your Gmail, and click the image that opens to change it. You can then select the category and illustration you like and set it as your profile picture.

This is the latest in a range of cosmetic updates rolled out by Google recently. Last week, Google rolled out its Material You update which changes the way most Google Apps appear, making the overall aesthetic more uniform across the board.

Netflix acquires Night School Studio, creators of Oxenfree

Netflix is arguably the dominant force when it comes to online video streaming, but it looks like the company wants to do so much more. While the service already produces movies under its own banner, it looks like video games will be the next step for the company. Netflix has now purchased the video game studio, Night School Studio,  in a bid to push into the video game market.

Netflix buys Night School Studio

Night School Studio is best known for Oxenfree, a supernatural mystery graphic adventure game launched in 2016. The developer is currently working on Oxenfree II and notes that the acquisition has not yet changed those plans.

In a post on it’s official blog, Sean Krankel, Founder of Night School Studio noted, “Of course, it’s a surreal honor to be the first games studio to join Netflix! Not only do we get to keep doing what we do, how we like to do it, but we get a front-row seat on the biggest entertainment platform in the world. The Netflix team has shown the utmost care for protecting our studio culture and creative vision. We’ll keep making OXENFREE II. We’ll keep cooking up new game worlds.”

It’s not yet known which games one can expect from Netflix in the future, but it could be titles based on it’s own shows and movies. Games based on Stranger Things has already been and there is no dearth of content when it comes to choosing a Netflix title to turn into a game.

“Night School wants to stretch our narrative and design aspirations across distinctive, original games with heart. Netflix gives film, TV, and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing. It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively,” Krankel writes.

In a post on Netflix’s own website, Mike Verdu, VP, Game Development notes that the games will be a part of the user’s Netflix membership. Further, these games will feature no advertisements, nor in-app purchases.

Realme Book Slim Review: Off To A Great Start

The Realme Book (Slim) is arguably one of the best laptops in this price range. If you have a budget of RS 45,000 and you are not looking to bother with any resource-intensive workloads, then look no further. It's also going to be my go-to recommendation for professionals looking to buy a reliable machine for office work. Xiaomi's Mi NoteBook Pro/ Ultra comes close and it should be on your list too if you are willing to extend the budget. This is a fantastic start for Realme in the laptop space and I can't wait to see more laptops from them in the future.

Realme has made a huge splash with the launch of its first laptop, the Realme Book (Slim). Starting at Rs 44,999, the Realme Book (Slim) offers a bevvy of features that were unheard of in this price range. We're talking about things like a thin and light form factor, a 14-inch 2K panel with a 3:2 aspect ratio, and more.

It is, however, worth pointing out that the starting price of Rs 44,999 is also for the base variant of the laptop that comes with a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor. Well, I have been using the base variant of the laptop for the better part of the month now and I think I am ready to share my verdict. Let's get started with the specifications first -

Realme Book (Slim) Specifications

The Realme Book (Slim) comes in two variants, both of which are powered by Intel's 11th generation Core processors. In addition to the processor, there are some other differences between the two like a different integrated GPU, support for WiFi 6, a faster memory, and more. So you might want to check out the detailed specs sheet before picking up a unit. For now, let's take a look at the specifications of the base variant that was sent for review -

Realme Book Specifications

Processor: 11th Gen Intel Core i3-1115G4 dual-core processor with 3.0GHz base clock and up to 4.1GHz turbo boost, 28W TDP Graphics: Intel UHD graphics with 48EUs RAM: 8GB DDR4 3733MHz Storage: Samsung 256GB NVMe SSD Display: 14-inch IPS 3:2 2160x1440 panel with 100% sRGB

Realme Book (Slim) Performance

Realme is using the Core i3-1115G4, a dual-core unit with 4 threads based on the 10 nm SuperFin process tech. The processor has a base clock of 3.0GHz at 28W TDP and all cores can turbo up to 4.1GHz. The Core i3-1115G4 idles at 1.7GHz with 12W TDP to save energy. I was a little sceptical about Realme going for a dual-core processor for its first laptop. Yes, it is for the base variant of the machine but it is still an unusual decision in such a specs-heavy market, especially when Xiaomi is so hell-bent at using an H-series processor in its laptops.

So, should you even bother looking at the Intel Core i3 variant of the laptop? Well, it depends on what you plan on using this laptop for, but the Intel Core i3 variant is perfectly serviceable. Core clock speeds won't paint the full picture but the Core i3-1115G4 running at 28W is more powerful than most other processors that go into the laptops in this price range.

Realme Book PCMark 10 Score

In certain use-cases, this dual-core processor can lock-horns with the Intel Core i7-10510U that's powering the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition from last year. In PCMark 10, the Realme Book (Slim) managed to score slightly higher than the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition powered by the i7-10510U. I got similar observations going against the i7-10510U in single-core tests.

This is exactly why the base variant of the Realme Book (Slim) is great for most use cases for people shopping for laptops in this price range. In real-world usage, I had absolutely no issues working on a dozen Chrome tabs with a handful of other apps running in the background. Having good quality storage also helps and the NVMe drive from Samsung managed to beat almost every other laptop's SSD score when I ran the CrystalDiskMark test.

Realme Book CrystalDiskMark Test

The Intel UHD integrated graphics is obviously not the fastest unit, so your gaming performance is going to be very limited, to say the least. You can run some esports titles like Valorant and Dota 2 at low graphics settings, but don't expect anything crazy. This isn't a gaming laptop by any means, so there's no point trying to push the limits.

Realme Book 3DMark Score

Without getting into too many details, I can also confirm that the Realme Book can be used for creative workloads like photo and video editing, but get ready to make some compromises. Rending our usual set of test files in Adobe Lightroom took longer than usual but it worked. The same goes for video editing using Davinci Resolve too. I highly recommend using a proxy for video editing to save time before the final render.

Thermal Performance

The Realme Book (Slim). despite its petite form factor has two fans inside the chassis for cooling. The copper heat sink also helps to keep this thing cool under heavy loads. While running Cinebench R23, the CPU package temperature didn't exceed 80°C. I didn't see any abnormal behaviour from the processor too while running the test. Cinebench R23 kept the core clock count high at 4.1GHz throughout the test except for a few drops down to 3.5GHz.

Realme Book CPU Core Clock

I was surprised to see that the processor didn't throttle during a test that usually brings other CPUs down to their knees. Even the iGPU load wasn't anything out of the ordinary and the package temperature continued to stay under 80°C while I was running 3DMark's Timespy test on loop.

Realme Book Core Temp

I am really curious to see how the Core i5-1135G7 performs in this chassis, but the Core i3-1115G4 seems like a solid choice, especially for not-so resource-intensive workloads.

Realme Book (Slim) Display

The Realme Book (Slim) sports a 14-inch 2K display which I think is the highlight of this laptop. It has a 3:2 aspect ratio that's not very commonly seen in most laptops. I encourage you to watch this detailed comparison video I managed to put together, comparing the Realme Book's display to the Mi NoteBook Ultra 3.2K panel. Here, check it out -

The video dives deep into various aspects like the resolution, colour accuracy, aspect ratio, and more. It should also help you understand exactly how good the display on the Realme Book really is.

Realme Book (Slim) Keyboard, Trackpad & IO

The Realme Book (Slim), in my opinion, has the best keyboard and trackpad I've used on a laptop in this price range. The keyboard and the trackpad on the Realme Book, honestly, make even some premium laptops look bad. You are looking at a 3-level Backlit keyboard with keys that have a 1.3mm key travel. If you like using the keyboard on the MacBooks then you'll simply enjoy this one. The experience is almost the same and I personally love it.

Realme Book Keyboard Deck

The trackpad is also much better than even the one on the Mi NoteBook Ultra that I recently reviewed. It's a multi-touch trackpad with a 123.8 × 78.2mm surface with support for Windows Precision drivers. Only the bottom half of the trackpad is clickable but it works very well and doesn't feel cheap.

The port selection, however, could have been better. You only get 2 USB Type C 3.2 gen 2 ports, a USB Type-A 3.1 Gen 1 port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the Core i3 variant. The Thunderbolt 4 port is limited to the Core i5 variant. This isn't a deal-breaker since there's a USB Type-A port at least, but it leaves me wanting more.

Realme Book (Slim) Design & Build Quality

Having used Realme's smartphones in the past, I was expecting nothing but the best from the company when I heard they were making a laptop. And honestly, they delivered. The Realme Book is absolutely stunning and it's arguably one of the best-looking laptops you can buy in this price range. Some people might call it a MacBook Air clone and to them, I say there's nothing wrong with it. I'd take a stunningly thin and light chassis over the dozen other laptops for which design seems like an afterthought.

Realme Book Design

The Realme Book (Slim) has a high-quality aluminium body that weighs approx. 1.38 kg. I wouldn't say it's built like a tank but the construction is definitely sturdy and feels super premium to use. It also doesn't have the best weight distribution which is also why you can't open the laptop's lid with one finger. Again, not a deal-breaker in this price range.

I also love the fact that Realme has added a fingerprint scanner that's embedded on the power button. There's also a 720p webcam making it better than a lot of laptops on the market, including more premium ones. I also want to mention the dual HARMAN Speakers with support for Stereo Surround Sound by DTS. I compared the Realme Book's speakers with the Mi NoteBook Ultra's dual speakers and it's not even close.

Realme Book (Slim) Battery Life

Realme Book's 54Whr battery is rated to last for 11 hours on a single charge. I'd say it's good for about 8-9 hours of usage on a daily basis. That's enough to get an entire day's worth of usage out of the machine. I'd assume the Core i5 variant might last a little less considering it's a more powerful processor which also means it'll dissipate more heat that needs to be cooled with the fans. The Realme Book's battery can be charged via a 65W USB-C power adapter.

Realme Book (Slim) Verdict

The Realme Book (Slim), as I mentioned earlier, is priced at Rs 44,999 in India for the base variant that we reviewed. For that price, you are getting a fantastic machine with a 2K display, a beautifully thin and light form-factor, a great keyboard and trackpad combo, and reliable performance for day-to-day workloads thanks to the 11th Gen Intel Core i3-1115G4 processor.

Xiaomi's Mi NoteBook Pro/ Ultra comes close and they should be on your list too if you are willing to extend the budget. This is a fantastic start for Realme in the laptop space and I can't wait to see more laptops from them in the future.

Apple Thinking Different about the iPhone 14: Complete redesign on the cards

While we just saw the release of the iPhone 13, Apple has already begun revealing a few tidbits about its next-generation model, the Apple iPhone 14. Reportedly, the brand is going to completely redesign the product and introduce major changes to the way it thinks of its lineup.

Apple iPhone 14 rumoured variants

According to Bloomberg, Apple will release an entry level and pro model next year as a part of the Iphone 14 series. Additionally, there will not be a mini model launched mid-year. While many users were disappointed with the iPhone 13, believing it to be an upgrade of the S series, Bloomberg’s reporters believe that the modest upgrade will prove to be justified as the brand’s engineers are working on something bigger behind the scenes. Also, instead of launching a mini model, Apple will stick with an entry-level model, two pros and one ‘Max’ model, with the last being a new model variant that will come into play with the iPhone 14 series.

Apple iPhone 14 rumoured variants

Now, whether this is just clever marketing to make sure consumers don’t bemoan the iPhone 13, or there’s something truly revolutionary on the way is something only time will tell.

Other reports regarding the Iphone 14

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also hinted that there may be a major redesign as far as the Apple iPhone 14 goes. For starters, he believes that Apple will do away with the notch camera, and introduce a hole-punch camera on the front. This won’t be the first time Apple has picked up an Android feature and called it ‘new’.

Other reports regarding the Iphone 14

Kuo’s reports also state that we might see a foldable iPhone by 2024 (by which time Samsung would have tried and tested a few foldable phone variants enough times for Apple to *borrow* the idea), along with a smartphone with an under-display touch ID screen in 2023.

Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission: Health ID feature and more have just been launched

The Prime Minister’s office launched the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission via videoconferencing, stating that this is a “new and extraordinary phase that the country is entering today.” As the largest health initiative in India, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is aimed at benefiting the low-income and middle class sections of society primarily, along with all other citizens in India.

Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission: Health ID feature and more have just been launched

What is the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission?

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is a healthcare initiative that was announced last year on Independence day, and deployed in six union territories as a pilot run. The mission includes ensuring the availability of a health identity card for every citizen, a healthcare professionals registry, and healthcare facilities registries. The idea is to dispel challenges within the healthcare system to enable all citizens to access the medical facilities they need.

How will Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission change India

PM Modi praised the scheme, saying that it enabled the country to hit the 900 million vaccination mark, a feat that most developed nations have not yet achieved. He also said that the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission will revolutionise the field of medicine and healthcare in INdia. It will bring all stakeholders in the field of health on a single platform and also help a patient connect with a doctor who speaks the same language,” he said.

Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission to help with tourism?

He also talked about how better health and tourism are connected. “Today is World Tourism Day as well. You must be wondering what is the connection between health and tourism. But there is. Tell me, will tourists like to visit a place which does not have emergency health services?” he asked. This indicated that he sees this not just as a health initiative, but also as an economic one that should help boost the economy.

Netflix looks to gain a stronger foothold in the Indian market with these shows

Netflix, though often credited with being one of the OG OTT platforms, has struggled to find its footing in India since its launch. This isn’t surprising - the platform’s cheapest monthly subscription fee equals almost half the entire fee charged by other OTT platforms like Amazon Prime and Disney+ Hotstar. In a market filled with cost-conscious consumers, this approach just doesn’t work.

Now, one may argue that Netflix is a more premium product when compared to its more affordable counterparts, however, this isn’t true either. As far as its content repository goes, Netflix has only managed to produce a single web series that became a pop cultural phenomenon (Sacred Games, season 1). Compare this with a formidable list produced by other OTTs including stellar shows like Pataal Lok, Asur, Special Ops, Family Man, Panchayat, and others, and Netflix certainly falls short in terms of both, the volume of its regional content offerings, and the quality.

Hopefully, this won’t be the case for long as Netflix has, through TUDUM, announced a spate of new shows that will hit its digital screen over the coming months. Here’s a quick look at 5 of its Indian offerings that certainly merit a watch:

Kota Factory Season 2

Acquiring TVF’s Kota Factory Season 2 is probably the smartest thing Netflix India has done this year, considering that TVF’s content offers both quality and reach. Kota Factory season 1 episode 1, Inventory, currently stands at 45,437,004 views on Youtube and the show was single handedly responsible for giving rise to the whole Jeetu Bhaiya phenomenon (Jitendra, a TVF familiar, had already amassed a significant fan following prior to the show, however, it is this show that really elevated the way audiences see him and, by extension, the character Jeetu).

Aranyak

Netflix India recently released a teaser (and it was refreshing to see a teaser that didn’t give away the entire story of the show/movie its highlighting) for Aranyak. Seeing the likes of Ashutosh Rana and Raveena Tandon, industry veterans who have been seemingly discarded by Bollywood for younger, less talented actors, definitely inspired intrigue. One hopes that this show will be able to hold its own and emerge in the same category as other brilliant shows like Pataal Lok.

Masaba Masaba Season 2

Masaba Masaba season 1 was a lighthearted and fun watch that didn’t try to glorify the designer. Instead, it showed her as a flawed woman with a bunch of issues that needed resolving, and even cast a light on Masaba Gupta’s acting abilities - again, definitely at a level higher than most Bollywood actresses of today. With that in mind, season 2 of Masaba Masaba should be a wonderful addition to Netflix India’s roster, as long as they don’t get carried away trying to strike that relatable vibe the first season had.

Finding Anamika

Finding Anamika sees Madhuri Dixit Nene return to the screen after years as she plays an actress who has disappeared suddenly. The show peels away the carefully crafted identity of the actress to take a look at what lies beneath. This is a Dharmatic Entertainment project and, if nothing else, we can definitely expect great visuals from this one.

Jamtara Season 2

Video Source: Netflix India

One heard great things about Jamtara season 1, however, due to Netflix’s high pricing and comparatively fewer audience numbers, the show never truly got the recognition it should have. With Jamtara Season 2, we hope that it will manage to reach a large audience.

Bitcoin Wallet wakes up after 9 Years to show how its value went from Rs 6 Lakhs to Rs 216 Crores

It was the year of 2012, when bitcoin was still growing, that a bitcoin wallet saw its rise. It received 616 bitcoins on December 10, 2012. At that time, each bitcoin was valued at around $ 13.30 that is roughly Rs 980 thus taking the value of the 616 bitcoins in that account to $ 8,195, roughly Rs 6 Lakhs, back then.

Since then, the account is almost dormant and has made negligible transactions for almost 9 years, until now. But, this wallet moved the bitcoins to another account on September 19 this year. With the current value of bitcoin, the transaction was valued at USD 29.40 million, around Rs 216 Crores. The account made a whopping profit of 358,655 percent!

This phenomenal growth in the value of bitcoin, made this account a Whale. According to a report by blockchain.com, after this transaction the account has a value of $ 25 only.

Bitcoin Wallet wakes up after 9 Years to show how it’s value went from Rs. 6 Lakhs to Rs. 216 Crores

In 2012, Bitcoin was a very new idea and not many knew about it nor trusted it. Gradually, with time, people figured out how it all worked and thus its value increased. Early investors who took the risk by accumulating bitcoins, are now sitting on the top of a goldmine and have questionable control over the market. It also shows us that long term investments pay for those who remain patient in this industry, despite its highly volatile nature.

Whopping Profit by Bitcoin Whales, not for the first time !

This incident is not one of its kind. There are many other incidents in which such whale accounts have made such a huge profit. A twitter account named Whale Alert, tracks such transactions by whale accounts and reports it out on twitter.

In July this year, another account woke up after 9 years with 791 bitcoins worth Rs 250 Crore.

Flipkart Big Billion Days Apple iPhone deal teasers decoded

It is that time of the year when deals start raining. While we will be covering the best deals across categories during the entire deal period, some of the Flipkart Big Billion Days teasers are pointing at some pretty good deals.

Yes, we are talking about the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Mini deals on the Flipkart Big Billion Days which starts on 3rd October at Midnight at 12:00 AM.

Every year we see some pretty awesome deals on iPhones during the Flipkart Big Billion Days and this time the teaser put out on Flipkart has got us wondering. As you can see the slot machine graphic seems to be indicating a price of Rs. 49,999. Now that, if true, is surely a great price for the iPhone 12.

via GIPHY

In case you want to know how the iPhone 12 stacks up against the iPhone 11. The iPhone 12 comes with a significant upgrade over the iPhone 11. Its superior A14 Bionic chip over the A13 Bionic Chip has 5G support, making it future proof. It also has an incredibly sharp OLED display to boot!

So, if you were holding on to that iPhone purchase, this deal could be the best iPhone deal of the season. And, the iPhone 12 deals don’t end there.

Flipkart is also doing a “Guess the price” teaser for iPhone 12 mini and are yet to announce the deal price for iPhone 12 mini. However, going by the iPhone 12 deal, we reckon the iPhone 12 Mini deal might just be even better, maybe closer to the 40K mark. That’s just our guesswork into play, but it would surely make for a great deal if it comes true. We shall keep a close eye on this one.

Apple iPhone 12 Mini contest

And finally, there is a 3rd iPhone deal teaser as well, this one is the iPhone SE deal, where pricing is expected to be closer to the 30K mark as per the teasers. That would possibly make it the most affordable iPhone deal so far!

Apple iphone Mini

On top of all these deals, there is also an additional 10% discount on using an ICICI Bank or Axis Bank Credit/Debit Card. And the regular exchange offers on your old smartphones are also there for the taking.

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook Ultra Review: Best laptop in this price range

The Mi NoteBook Ultra also outperforms some other expensive ultrabooks while costing a fraction of their price. This is a solid upgrade for those using an older machine or even the Mi NoteBook 14 that came out last year. It's also a no-brainer to spend a little extra and get the Mi NoteBook Ultra or the Mi NoteBook Pro over the RedmiBook 15 Pro that came out not too long ago. The Realme Book (Slim) stands as one of the main competitors in this price range, but there are some noteworthy differences that you might want to consider, such as a smaller display with an unusual aspect ratio and more. That being said, the Mi NoteBook Ultra is indeed the laptop to beat in this price range and I can already see this particular machine making it to a lot of our recommendation lists.

The Mi NoteBook 14 marked Xiaomi's entry into the laptop space in India last year. While we did get new RedmiBook laptops from the company a few months back, but the new Mi NoteBook Pro and the Mi NoteBook Ultra are the true successors of the Mi NoteBook 14 we all were waiting for. Both the Mi NoteBook Pro and the Mi NoteBook Ultra are solid upgrades over the Mi NoteBook 14 with a lot of noteworthy improvements.

I've been using the Mi NoteBook Ultra as my primary laptop for the better part of the last month, and I think it's a fantastic option for anybody who's looking to buy a new laptop under Rs 60,000 in India. In this review, I will be diving deep into some key aspects of the laptop that should help you get a better understanding of the laptop.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Specifications

The Mi NoteBook Ultra review unit that I tested comes fitted with Intel's 11th gen Core i7-11370H CPU but the base variant of the laptop comes with an H-series Core i5 processor. I will be talking about the performance of this laptop in detail but before that, let's take a quick look at the specifications -

Mi NoteBook Ultra Specs

Processor: Intel Core i7-11370H 3.30GHz base clock and 4.80GHz max turbo, 35W Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics with 96EU RAM: 16GB DDR4 RAM 1600MHz Storage: 512GB Kioxia NVMe SSD Display: 39.6cm (15.6) Mi TrueLife+ Display, 3.2K resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio

Mi NoteBook Ultra Performance

The Mi NoteBook Ultra given to us for review is powered by the Intel Core i7-11370H CPU. It's a high-end quad-core CPU that is usually seen in some thin and light gaming laptops. It's an interesting choice to use this SoC instead of an i7 from the U-series. The result? Well, it makes the Mi NoteBook Ultra way more powerful than some other ultrabooks on the market. Obviously, this comes at the cost of thermals, which we will discuss a bit later in this review.

The processor has 4 Willow Cove cores and 8 threads with support for Hyperthreading. The H-series chip inside this laptop is configured at 35W TDP with a base clock of 3.30GHz. It also has a single or two core boost of up to 4.8GHz whereas all cores and hit a max frequency of 4.3GHz. It is superior to the Core i7-1185G7 which has a lower TDP and subsequently, lower performance.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Cinebench

In Cinebench R23, the Mi NoteBook Ultra managed to score 5,539 in the multi-core test and 1,527 in the single-core test. The scores are higher than what we were able to get on both the newly launched RedmiBook 15 Pro and the Fujitsu UH-X Convertible laptops that are powered by the Intel Core i5-11300H and the Core i7-1165G7 respectively. Here, take a look -

The Mi NoteBook Ultra also managed to score 5,034 in PCMark 10, which is once again higher than some other ultrabooks on the market like the ASUS Expertbook B9400. Even outside of the world of benchmarking, the Mi NoteBook Ultra excels in putting up with my day-to-day workloads too. I was comfortably able to work with around 15-20 Chrome tabs along with some other apps like Lightroom, Spotify, etc. running in the background. The Core i7-11370H truly helps to bring the best out of this machine.

Not having a discrete GPU may sound like a deal-breaker but the Iris Xe Graphics with 96EU powering this machine is no slouch either. It handles most of the 3D workloads very well. I was able to play multiple games of Valorant on this laptop and it was indeed an enjoyable experience thanks to that 90Hz panel. Yes, you can play games on this laptop as long as you keep your expectations in check. The Mi NoteBook Ultra should be good for esports titles and even some AAA titles at low settings.

Mi NoteBook Ultra 3DMark

Here's a quick look at the 3DMark numbers that I managed to record on the Mi NoteBook Ultra. I also used the Mi NoteBook Ultra for creative workloads like photo and video editing and it delivered reliable performance. I was able to edit my usual test edit timeline in Davinci Resolve faster than I was able to on other notebooks like the ASUS Expertbook B9400. Adobe Lightroom was also able to export our test files without any issues. And did I mention that the 16:10 aspect ratio helps with creative workloads? It's hard to go back to a normal 16:9 panel after getting the taste of more screen real-estate.

Thermal Performance

Xiaomi seems to be hell-bent on using Intel's H-series chips even in its mainstream notebooks like the RedmiBook. I am not the one to complain as long as the thermals are well under control. So, what can you expect from the Mi NoteBook Ultra? Well, let's a look at some graphs before I answer that question.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Core Clock

Cinebench R23's multi-core test pushes the i7-11370H to its limits by hitting the max turbo frequency of 4.8GHz. The core clocks settle at around 3.3GHz throughout the test. As a result, I was able to record a max temp of 97°C initially before it settled at around 80°C throughout the test. I never saw the core temperatures going above the 85°C mark outside of benchmarking applications, which is good.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Core Temperature

This is also true for gaming or running any applications that go heavy on the iGPU. So as long as you maintain a decent ambient temperature, the Mi NoteBook Ultra should be able to handle just about anything without having any major thermal issues. Yes, the laptop will throttle occasionally while running some resource-intensive application, but I am happy to report that it is not a common occurrence and it will not take away from the user experience.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Display

The Mi NoteBook Ultra not only has one of the best displays you can find on a laptop in this price range, but I think it's also one of the best laptop displays I've ever used. Yes, other OEMs offer laptops with both bigger and higher resolution panels but the Mi NoteBook Ultra's 15.6-inch 3.2K panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio hits the sweet spot for me. It's a fantastic display and is easily one of the best things about this laptop.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Display

I managed to compare with Realme Book's 14-inch 2K panel to see which one's a better option and you can check out this video right here to see the detailed comparison -

The video also highlights other aspects of the Mi NoteBook Ultra's display, so be sure to check it out in case you want to learn more about the panel itself.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Keyboard, Trackpad & IO

Before we jump into the design and build quality section, let's talk a little bit about the trackpad, keyboard, and the IO situation on the Mi NoteBook Ultra. Just like its design, the Mi NoteBook Ultra's keyboard deck will instantly remind you about the MacBook. You are looking at a traditional laptop keyboard layout with generous space between the keys.

Xiaomi says it is using the scissor mechanism for the keys and they feel similar to the keys on a MacBook. I'd honestly say the keys on the Realme Book (Slim) come close to the MacBook keys but the Mi NoteBook Ultra comes close if that's even a metric to look at. That being said, they're very comfortable to type on with 1.5mm deep key travel and I personally got used to them in no time. The good thing about the keyboard is that it comes with backlighting which was missing on both the Mi NoteBook 14 and the RedmiBook 15 Pro.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Keyboard Deck

Moving on to the trackpad, this is clearly a bigger surface now compared to the one we saw on the last year's Mi NoteBook 14. It's also slightly better than what we saw on both the Mi NoteBook 14 and the RedmiBook 15 Pro, but I still think there's room for improvement. The smooth finish helps with gestures and tracking, but clicking the bottom half of the trackpad still feels "budget-ty" for the lack of a better word. It's certainly not a deal-breaker, but something I wanted to mention.

One thing do I like about the Mi NoteBook Ultra is the wide variety of port selections on offer. While most laptops in this range, including the Realme Book (Slim), come with only a couple of USB Type-C ports, the Mi NoteBook Ultra gives you a bunch of options. You get a Type-C USB port and Thunderbolt 4 for charging and two USB Type-A ports out of which one is a 3.2 Gen 1 port whereas the other one is USB 2.0. Additionally, you also get an HDMI port and a 3.5mm combo jack.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Design & Build Quality

It's no surprise that the Mi NoteBook Ultra resembles the MacBook Pro both from the outside as well as the inside on the keyboard deck as I mentioned earlier. And for its all intents and purposes, it's not a bad thing at all, in my honest opinion. In fact, I think it's one of the best laptops you can buy in this price range strictly speaking from a design and a build quality perspective.

The chassis is made out of Aircraft grade Series 6 Aluminium and it weighs  1.7Kgs. It's definitely not as wafer-thin or lightweight as, say, the MacBook Air, but it screams quality. There's also a 'Xiaomi' branding on the lid giving it a bit more personality which the RedmiBook 15 Pro lacked. The overall build quality is very premium and makes it stand out in this price range.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Design

Other additional features like the built-in fingerprint scanner on the power button make it very convenient. Not to forget, there's also a webcam now on top of the display, something which was missing on both the Mi NoteBook 14 and the RedmiBook 15 Pro. The laptop is also fitted with dual 2W stereo speakers with support for DTS audio processing app. The speaker quality is no match to some other ultrabooks on the market, but it gets loud enough to fill a small room with decent audio quality.

The lid is also super easy to open thanks to the fantastic that lets you open the lid with just one finger. Opening the lid reveals the beautiful display with all its bells and whistles that we talked about in the video embedded above.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Battery Life

Mi NoteBook Ultra Battery Life Test

The Mi Notebook Ultra packs a 69,993 mWh battery, which Xiaomi says can last for 12-hours worth of usage. It charges via a 65W Type-C power adapter which makes it convenient. In terms of battery performance, the Mi NoteBook Ultra managed to last for around 7 hours and 20 mins with brightness set to 100-percent. This is one of those machines that can easily last you for an entire day before forcing you to look for a charger. Obviously, your mileage may vary but I still think it's commendable given the fact that it sports a 3.2K panel with a 90Hz refresh rate.

Mi NoteBook Ultra Verdict

Xiaomi has launched the Mi NoteBook Ultra for a starting price of Rs 59,999 in India. At this price, you are looking at the base variant of the machine with an Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM. The variant I tested for this review is the most expensive option priced at Rs 76,999. For that price, you are looking at a fantastic laptop that comes with one of the most beautiful displays, a powerful 11th generation Intel Core H-series processor, and an extremely well-built machine that's usually unheard of in this price range.

The Realme Book (Slim) stands as one of the main competitors in this price range, but there are some noteworthy differences that you might want to consider like a smaller display with an unusual aspect ratio and more. That being said, the Mi NoteBook Ultra is indeed the laptop to beat in this price range and I can already see this particular machine making it to a lot of our recommendation lists.
