"Through Amazon Live, Amazon India aims to connect the influencers with customers at scale, enabling them to make informed purchases," said Kishore Thota, Director, Customer Experience & Marketing, Amazon India.

The influencers should have an account with platforms like YouTube or Instagram to do livestreaming on Amazon Live.

Indian-origin astronomer confirms protective shield around dwarf galaxies

Washington, Sep 29 (IANS) An Indian-origin researcher-led team has confirmed for the first time how dwarf galaxies remain intact despite vigorous star formation, as our Milky Way's largest satellite galaxies are, indeed, protected by a shield.

With the help of data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and a retired satellite called the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), a team of astronomers led by Dhanesh Krishnarao, assistant professor at Colorado College, revealed that these galaxies are surrounded by a corona, a protective shield of hot supercharged gas.

"A lot of people were struggling to explain how these streams of material could be there. If this gas was removed from these galaxies, how are they still forming stars?" Krishnarao said in a paper published in Nature.

For billions of years, the Milky Way's largest satellite galaxies -- the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds -- orbited one another as they pulled in toward our home galaxy.

The Magellanic Clouds, dwarf galaxies roughly 160,000 light-years from Earth, are the largest of the Milky Way's satellites and are thought to be on their first in-falling passage around the Milky Way.

The corona is thought to act as a buffer protecting the dwarf galaxies' vital star-forming gas from the gravitational pull of the much larger Milky Way, the researchers found.

Astronomers predicted the corona's existence several years ago.

By analysing patterns in ultraviolet light from 28 quasars, Krishnarao-led team was able to detect and characterise the material surrounding the Large Magellanic Cloud and confirm that the corona exists.

Researchers think that a galaxy's corona is a remnant of the primordial cloud of gas that collapsed to form the galaxy billions of years ago.

The ability to detect the corona required extremely detailed ultraviolet spectra.

"The resolution of Hubble and FUSE were crucial for this study. The corona gas is so diffuse, it's barely even there," said Krishnarao.

In addition, it is mixed with other gases, including the streams pulled from the Magellanic Clouds and material originating in the Milky Way.

By mapping the results, the team also discovered that the amount of gas decreases with distance from the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud.

"It's a perfect telltale signature that this corona is really there," said Krishnarao. "It really is cocooning the galaxy and protecting it."

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Incremental upgrades still make for the best iPhone yet

With novel innovations such as Dynamic Island, an improved camera system, and class-leading performance chops, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is an easy recommendation for those looking for the fastest and one of the best phones in the market. While the improvements are still what we’d call incremental, you can’t deny that they will make users (and other smartphone manufacturers) sit up and take notice. That said, for a phone that starts at ₹1,39,990, this isn’t easy on anyone’s wallet. For a phone that looks so similar to its predecessor, it may be a tough sell.

September has always been an anticipated month in tech circles due to the impending launch of the new iPhones every year. Whether you love Apple or dislike the company, you definitely cannot ignore it. This year is the first time we’ve got a meaningful separation between the non-Pro and Pro iPhones – with the new Dynamic Island, larger resolution camera, and the upgraded chipset. While the non-Pro iPhone 14 models get last year’s recycled Apple silicone, the Pro and Pro Max incorporate the shiny new A16 Bionic chip.

Customers who want the latest and greatest cutting-edge technology will obviously look to purchase the Pro models, should their budget allow them to do so. However, is it worth the extra dough? And does the new iPhone 14 Pro Max do enough to sway Android fans from the premium phones from companies such as Samsung, Google, and others? Let’s find out that and more in the detailed review of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Build and design

The iPhone 14 Pro Max looks remarkably similar to the last generation iPhone 13 Pro Max, but there are two key differences – the notch is replaced by the pill-shaped cutout Apple has dubbed the ‘Dynamic Island’ and all the rear camera lenses are significantly larger than last year’s model. The phone is also slightly heavier and thicker than its predecessor. It is 7.9 mm thick and weighs 240 g. The new Deep Purple colour variant looks fantastic, but we got the Space Black one for review which looks quite plain and minimalistic.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Build and design

As with its predecessor, the Pro variants have a frosted matte glass back and polished stainless steel sides which look elegant but very familiar. The buttons, as well as the alert slider, are in the same spots as before as well. Holding the phone, it felt a bit more unwieldy than something like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra because of its hard, flat sides and its heft. Those with smaller hands will definitely have to get used to two-handed use, but that’s the case with most large flagships today even though the S22 Ultra’s curved sides feel a bit easier to hold.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Build and design

The new pill-shaped cutout dubbed ‘Dynamic Island’ houses Apple’s TrueDepth camera system for FaceID and the selfie camera. One speaker out of two in the stereo setup and the Lightning port are to be found at the bottom of the phone. Sadly, there’s still no USB-C charging port despite there being rumours of one being present in this lineup, but we wouldn’t expect that to be the case for much longer. The phone also comes with an IP68 rating against dust and water.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Build and design

Overall, this is a well-designed phone and a rugged one too, but the design is all too familiar, even with the new Dynamic Island pill-shaped cutout. We hope to see Apple do something revolutionary with their phones’ design in the future, but it's something we’ve not had since the iPhone 10, so we don’t have our hopes set too high.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Display

The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a gorgeous display, there’s no denying that. It is a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with Dolby Vision support and a maximum rated brightness of 2,000 nits. This officially makes it the brightest display to ever grace a smartphone so far. In our tests indoors, the display went up to 901 nits of maximum brightness, and outdoors, it touched around 1550 nits. The display is a treat to consume content with rich colours, deep blacks, and excellent viewing angles. It is topped with Apple’s Ceramic Shield that is as tough and resistant to drops as ever.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Display

Let’s talk about the pill-shaped cutout a.k.a. Apple’s new Dynamic Island. While we don’t understand the need to name every design and software flair, Dynamic Island is fun, works seamlessly and the animations are excellent. It houses Apple’s TrueDepth camera and acts like a mini dashboard of sorts, providing some vital information about apps that are running in the background such as the timer, maps, music, and more.

For example, if you start a timer for 30 minutes and swipe up to the home screen, the pill engorges with seamless animation and displays how long until the timer goes off with a timer icon. If you open up Apple Music or Spotify and then go into another app, you’ll see the album art and a mini waveform displayed here. Tapping on this will take you back into the app and pressing and holding will open a larger pop-up window that looks like the app’s widget. Here, you can perform actions using the playback controls.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Display

Additionally, if you open up two apps that can leverage Dynamic Island at the same time, the pill-cutout will be split into two to show both apps and it becomes a multitasker of sorts. Of course, this will mean smudges on your selfie camera that you will have to clean up quite often though. Apple has also done a good job increasing the touch sensitivity of this Island, so even if you do end up touching dead parts of the screen (such as the selfie camera), the touch zone is sensitive enough to pick up that touch from the corners.

We can’t wait to see more applications of Dynamic Island from third-party apps. Apple will make a Live Activities API available to third-party developers later this year and that will only open up the avenues of what this can grow to be further. We also can’t wait to see Android copycats of Dynamic Island – which should honestly be a lot of fun.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Display

As for refresh rate, the iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with an LTPO panel with an adaptive refresh rate from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. However, the phone’s display only ever goes into 1 Hz when on the new Always-On display which seems like a missed opportunity to us. The fact that the screen is capable of going all the way down to 1 Hz in normal operation, but doesn’t, just means battery life that could have been further extended isn’t.

Speaking of the Always-On display, Apple takes a different approach. It drains most of the brightness and colour from the lock screen picture but still keeps information such as the date, time, and widget details quite bright. However, this comes at the expense of battery life – in our tests, the Always-On display leached about 2-3 per cent battery per hour. The Always-On display is a bit too much, in our opinion. Would have been more prudent to keep it simple and not as taxing to overall battery life.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Performance

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is powered by the latest Apple A16 Bionic chipset built on a more efficient 4 nm process. As per Apple, the chip comes with one billion more transistors than the A15 Bionic. The A16 Bionic consists of two performance cores and four efficiency cores. It comes with a 5-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. There’s only 6 GB RAM on offer, but through our experience, it is more than enough for multitasking – however – open 5 or more apps and the first one seems to shut down completely and you would have to reboot the app all over again.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Performance

We ran our usual slew of benchmarks on the phone and the results put the phone up there with Androids housing the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and in some cases, even higher. For instance, the phone scored higher than the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 in AnTuTu, but the Realme GT 2 Pro beat it by a slight margin. In GeekBench, the iPhone 14 Pro Max dominated with a Single-Core score of 1884 and a Multi-Core score of 5348. It is safe to say that the A16 Bionic is incrementally more powerful than the A15 Bionic.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Performance

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Performance

We played games such as COD: Mobile and Asphalt 9 Legends as well and the phone handles every game you throw at it with relative ease and slight heating. Nothing too major. In COD: Mobile, we got a median FPS of 60 at 100 per cent stability on GameBench Pro. In Asphalt, we saw a median FPS of 59, again, at 100 per cent stability. All in all, we saw about a 12 per cent improvement in synthetic benchmarks from the iPhone 13 Pro Max to the 14 Pro Max.

Benchmarks aside, the phone is smooth, fluid and a treat to use. There are absolutely no instances of lag or stutters and most apps function very smoothly. We faced a problem when we just started testing where AnTuTu didn’t run in landscape mode, but that has been fixed with the latest AnTuTu update. We also tried editing a video which involved transcoding a 4K video to 1080p and the iPhone 14 Pro Max only took 30 seconds to do the same.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Software

The haptics engine of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the best in class, no doubt about that. The stereo speakers are extremely loud and sound exquisite, so much so, that we barely needed earphones to consume content or play games. Overall, this is one of the, if not the most, powerful phones on the market in 2022 and should fly through all of the tasks you can possibly throw at it.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: UI

The iPhone 14 Pro Max runs iOS 16 out of the box. Here are some of its newest features. iOS 16 is extremely smooth with fluid animations and seamless connectivity with other Apple products. Alongside the new features such as screen widgets and customisations, passwordless logins, overhauled notifications, and more, there are also brand new features such as Crash Detection. We, of course, didn’t test this. Satellite Connectivity was also introduced but the feature isn’t available in India.

We like the customisations you can do with the lock screen using widgets, photos, and more. This also shows up in your Always-On display and we’ve talked about that at length in the display segment. The image separation for portrait pictures on the lock screen looks fantastic with the clock hiding behind the person. And when the always-on mode is triggered, it conveniently moves forward for easy viewing.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Software

The new image segmentation feature is also very cool, you can just grab a subject from any image and paste it into another app like messages or notes. The reviewer has a love/hate relationship with iOS but the attributes that make her dislike the OS are reducing every year, much to her horror. We love that the OS has widgets and customisations on the lock screen now – which brings it closer than ever to Android’s suite of customisation options.

However, annoyances like the lack of a ‘Clear all’ button for recent apps, having to input your password or FaceID before every app installation, and the issues transferring files from an iPhone to a Windows PC still remains. Overall though, iOS 16 is a masterclass in fluidity, something you can see from the lock screen to the transitions in the camera app.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Cameras

The iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with a triad of rear cameras including a brand new 48 MP main lens with quad-binning, a 12 MP ultrawide lens, and a 12 MP 3x optical zoom lens. The 48 MP sensor can also be also for near optical-level 2x zooming since this mode uses a central 12 MP sub-section of the 48 MP main lens to output 2x zoomed photos. However, you don’t get higher optical zoom levels as offered by the Galaxy S22 Ultra. You can also shoot full 48 MP photos by enabling ProRAW in camera settings. Apple has also introduced a Photonic Engine which is powered by the A18 Bionic chip to offer brighter and more colourful photos on all iPhone 14 Pro Max cameras.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Cameras

The images taken from the primary lens of the iPhone 14 Pro Max were sharp, detailed, and colourful. The colours look rich and full of contrast but aren’t oversaturated. Shots taken at night look stellar as well with good colour and detail reproduction. Dynamic range is excellent as well, even in tricky lighting with plenty of detail in the shadows and a good representation of the highlights. Portrait shots taken in the daytime have good detail and edge detection but those taken at night can miss out on blurring out the edges around hair accurately. Also, shots of human subjects with night mode look slightly noisy and artificial but when we used the new Adaptive Flash, they looked much more true to life. Here are a couple of image samples from the iPhone 14 Pro Max, they have been compressed for the web.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Cameras

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Cameras

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Cameras

The iPhone 14 Pro Max can use its ultrawide camera to take macro shots

The ultrawide camera takes fantastic shots as well with similar colour science as the main lens. In fact, nighttime ultrawide shots see a good deal of improvement over the iPhone 13 Pro Max as well. However, the 3x zoom lens isn’t as consistent as we’d hoped for. There are times it takes detailed and vibrant shots, while sometimes, it just overexposes the highlights too much.

The 12 MP selfie camera now comes with autofocus capabilities and an f/1.9 aperture. The selfies taken from the phone look natural and detailed. Portrait selfies have good edge detection; you can adjust this after clicking the photo as well. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has the best synergy between cameras on any smartphone in 2022. It is a well-rounded and polished camera system as a whole.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Cameras

Coming to video, there are two key upgrades this time around. The first is 4K Cinematic Mode and the second is Action Mode. Action Mode is Apple’s version of a super steady mode that comes in handy shooting video when there’s a lot of movement in the frame. The mode works like magic, even footage with an excessive amount of shake will come out looking smooth – almost like the phone is mounted on a gimbal. However, the resolution is capped at 2.8K since the phone crops in to get the effect to work.

That aside, video quality is the absolute best in the business on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The footage captured is smooth, true to life, has great dynamic range, and looks professional.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Battery life

Apple hasn’t revealed the exact capacity of the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s battery but 9to5Mac spotted the capacities on a website called Chemtrec. This phone comes with a 4,323 mAh battery which is a smidge smaller than last year’s Pro Max model. However, this shouldn’t make much of a difference on paper since the A16 Bionic is a more power-efficient chipset.

However, we still found that the battery doesn’t quite match up to the expectations set by its predecessor. This could be due to the Always-On display, and the increased brightness capabilities. The phone drained 4 per cent battery in 15 minutes of playing COD: Mobile (from 35 per cent to 31 per cent) and it lasted almost 16 hours in our 4K video loop test. Now, these are fantastic numbers, but the 13 Pro Max outshone this phone in regards to battery life.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Battery life

After unplugging the phone at 100 per cent at 6:30 AM and using the phone all day for browsing emails, looking through social media, streaming Netflix, playing games, and using GPS, the phone ran out of battery at around 11 PM. The same test was repeated with Always-On turned off and the phone ran out of battery at 3 AM after coming off charge at 6:30 AM.

Figures aside, the phone still will run for at least a day and a half for normal users and will last power users for about a day. The phone can be charged via lightning cable, MagSafe, or other Qi chargers. But it does not have ultra-fast charging. It can charge at 20 W which Apple says can recharge the phone to 50 per cent battery in 30 minutes. In our tests, the phone charged up to full in 1 hour and 56 minutes using a fast charger.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Verdict

With novel innovations such as Dynamic Island, an improved camera system, and class-leading performance chops, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is an easy recommendation for those looking for the fastest and one of the best phones in the market. While the improvements are still what we’d call incremental, you can’t deny that they will make users (and other smartphone manufacturers) sit up and take notice. That said, for a phone that starts at ₹1,39,990, this isn’t easy on anyone’s wallet. For a phone that looks so similar to its predecessor, it may be a tough sell.

However, if you do look beneath the surface, the improvements made do add up to make for a more complete smartphone experience. Be it the lock screen customisations, improved cameras, or the fun, new Dynamic Island, the phone will feel novel enough once you start using it. Something we cannot say for the vanilla iPhone 14. We wouldn’t, however, recommend those with an iPhone 13 Pro or 13 Pro Max to switch to this phone because there simply aren’t enough upgrades to justify the cost of switching in just one year. However, if you’ve got an iPhone 11 or even an iPhone 12 Mini, it makes perfect sense to switch to the iPhone 14 Pro Max if you want everything that is good about an iPhone – good battery life, excellent performance, long software support, a stunning display, and a strong ecosystem.

If you’re invested in the Android side of things, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra or Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a good option and if your main concern is cameras, the Vivo X80 Pro is a good option as well. For Stock Android lovers; we hear the Pixel 7 series may be showing up to India, so maybe wait for that instead?

Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy S23 5K renders and design revealed: Check out the phone from different angles

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S23 series early next year, but ahead of its launch, Digit is bringing you an exclusive first look at one of the phones from the upcoming flagship series from the company. In partnership with popular tipster OnLeaks, Digit now brings you the full 360 degrees 5K renders of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23. This leak not only takes the lid off the design of the phone and the new camera arrangement on the back of the device but also reveals the phone's exact dimensions.

Samsung Galaxy S23: Design leaked

Earlier, we had come across rumors that the Samsung Galaxy S23 could only get a minor increase in dimensions over its predecessor, and now, OnLeaks has put his weight behind such claims, by revealing the dimensions of the phone. According to the leak, the phone will be slightly bigger – roughly 146.3 x 70.8 x 7.6 mm in size – compared to the Samsung Galaxy S22. The renders also reveal that the Galaxy S23 will use the exact same design as the Galaxy S22, minus the camera module we saw last year.

Instead, the phone will come with an updated rear camera design that's inspired by the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This translates to three cameras placed on the back panel resting on their individual islands without an encompassing fence or bump. However, that's all we know about the cameras for now, as there is no word on the rear camera internals at the moment.

Coming to the front, the renders suggest the phone will flaunt slightly broader bezels than before, with the display still the same size. According to the information shared by OnLeaks, the S23 display will be 6.1-inches diagonally. Again, no confirmation, but this display will likely refresh at 120Hz. The renders also reveal that the display will have a centrally located punch-hole, which according to previous rumours, could house a 12MP shooter.

Galaxy S23: Expected Specifications

As for the other internals, we don't really have any confirmation at the moment. However, leaks in the past have given us some idea about the phone. Under the hood, the phone could come fitted with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, plenty of RAM and a 5 per cent bigger battery pack than we saw on the Galaxy S22.

For now, this is all we know about the upcoming Galaxy S23. However, keep following this space for all the latest on the device. For more technology news, product reviews, sci-tech features and updates, keep reading Digit.in.

Jio Phone 5G could come with a 6.5-inch HD+ display on the front. The selfie camera could have an 8MP sensor. The rear camera setup, meanwhile, could comprise a 13MP primary shooter and a 2MP companion.

Under the hood, the Jio 5G phone could house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor coupled with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage. There could be microSD card support too.

The partnership with Google on the software side could extend to this phone also. That means you could get Pragati OS with stripped-down Google Apps and Jio app suite.

Last but not least, the battery powering all this could be a 5000mAh cell capable of charging up at 18W speed.

Reliance Jio Phone 5G Price and Availability (Expected)

Reliance Jio 5G

In its report, Counterpoint states, “at some point in 2024, Jio will also be compelled to launch an affordable 5G mmWave + sub-6GHz smartphone as the cost deltas between the two have narrowed significantly from the overall BoM (bill of materials) fitting perspective.”

And to reiterate, the Jio Phone 5G could come under the ₹12,000 bracket, if rumors are to be believed.

That’s all we know for now.

NVIDIA releases patch for frame rate and stuttering problems after Windows 11 2022 Update: How to get the fix

Following complaints from users of gaming PCs about lower frame rates, stuttering, among others after the release of the Windows 11 2022 Update, graphics chip giant NVIDIA has acknowledged the problem and released a fix for the issues, which is now available in beta.

According to Windows Central, the graphics chip manufacturer plans to ship an update to everyone as soon as possible.

"Some users may observe lower performance in games or applications after updating to Microsoft Windows 11 2022 Update," according to the NVIDIA support page.

iOS 16 Cinematic Mode videos arent being recognized by video editors: Heres why

A new bug in iOS 16 is reportedly hampering videos recorded in Cinematic Mode, which are no longer recognised by free video editor iMovie and video editing tool 'Final Cut Pro'.

The users reported the problem on Apple Support forums and Reddit.

They said that video editors iMovie and Final Cut Pro "can no longer open Cinematic videos recorded with an iPhone running iOS 16," reports 9to5Mac.

"It seems that iOS 16 broke this feature in FCP, which will show a "The cinematic effect cannot be activated' error," said a Final Cut Pro user.

Another user posted that the errors are also experienced when using iMovie.

The tech giant was yet to acknowledge the new bug and release a software update to fix it.

Some users suggested a workaround, like first edit Cinematic videos on the iPhone and then share to the Mac over AirDrop.

With Cinematic Mode, your iPhone 13 camera can record videos with a shallow depth of field and add beautiful focus transitions for a cinema-grade look.

Cinematic mode works by capturing a depth map of the video as it's being filmed.

In new iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, Cinematic Mode is available in 4K at 30 frames per second (fps) and 4K at 24 fps, along with Pro-level workflows for video, including ProRes and end-to-end Dolby Vision HDR.

Alienware X14 Review: Sleek, stylish, powerful

The Alienware X14 is an impressive machine. It's compact, looks extremely stylish, and comes with some crazy specs. However, it could have done more in the specs department for the price, since you can get similar and in some cases even better gaming performance on cheaper laptops.

The Alienware X14 is Dell's self proclaimed "world's thinnest" laptop, and at a glance, this is certainly a very compact device. Don't let that fool you though, because it still comes packed with beastly specs for all your gaming needs. The latest 12th gen Intel processor, an RTX NVIDIA GPU, a crisp and bright display with a high refresh rate and more. Of course, all of this does not come cheap, with a Rs. 1,74,990 price tag. Is the Alienware X14 worth the price? Read our review to find out.

Alienware X14 Build and Design

The Alienware X14 is a sight to behold. This is the kind of laptop that immediately draws all attention in the room. To say that it looks like a spaceship or a hypercar would be fairly accurate. This IS an Alienware laptop through and through, and you will recognise it from across the room.

Alienware X14

If it hasn't been established yet, this is a very cool looking laptop. Dell has put impressive attention to detail into this. Every aspect of the design, including the placement of the vents and hinges plays into the overall aesthetic of the laptop. It's well thought out, and feels secure and sturdy. The laptop's outer body is composed of magnesium alloy. The internal body makes use of aluminium and stainless steel. The vents and surfaces inside the laptop, such as the bezels and keyboard, use plastic. There's a good balance without compromising too much on weight. Plus, the outer frame is resistant to fingerprints, which is a nice touch.

Alienware X14

The X14 comes with a new, patent pending hinge system. The hinge moves back and forth along a track which results in a more stable experience while using the lid. Opening and closing the lid is smooth, and there's just enough tension with little to no flex or wobble. Additionally, the lid doesn't sit completely flat when closed, and is at a slight angle to make opening the laptop easier.

Alienware X14

With such a small form factor, understandably you do not get a full-sized keyboard. Things are squished to ensure everything you need is present, including the function keys, and even the trackpad. However, the keys themselves are pleasant to type on, have tactile feedback and decent travel as far as laptop keyboards are concerned. They're also RGB backlit, but it's not per-key, so no custom lighting layouts.

Alienware X14

The "world's thinnest" laptop is only 1.4cm thick and at 1.8kg fairly light as well. You should have no trouble with portability when it comes to this laptop. It's even more impressive when you consider the specs on this laptop. There are two variants of the X14, the one we received has a 3050Ti, but there's a variant with an RTX 3060, more RAM, and storage capacity as well, which will set you back by Rs. 2,05,989.

Alienware X14 Specs at a glance

Display Resolution: 1920 x 1080, 144Hz Processor: 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12700H Graphics: Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti Memory: 16GB LPDDR5, 5200 MHz OS: Windows 11 Home Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD Ports: 1x USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C with PD and DisplayPort, 2 x Thunderbolt 4 port with PD and DisplayPort, 1 x headset combo port, 1 x HDMI 2.1 port, 1 x MicroSD Port Connectivity: Intel AX211, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 Battery: 80 wHr Dimensions: 321.5mm x 262.77mm x 14.5mm (WxDxH) Weight: 1.8kg Price: Rs. 1,74,990

Alienware X14

As you can see from the images, the laptop hinge is not at the very back, but slightly forward, which is why we said it kind of gave off a hypercar look. This rear section is where you will find all the laptop's IO ports.

Alienware X14 IO Ports

Alienware X14

Speaking of IO ports, you've got plenty of options. A USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. You've also got an audio combo jack, an HDMI 2.1 port and a MicroSD slot as well. While the laptop does not have an ethernet port, an adapter is provided along with it in the box.

Alienware X14 Display

A 14-inch display might be on the smaller side for a lot of people. However, it should more than suffice. During our time with the laptop, we didn't at any point think that the smaller display was hindering our enjoyment. The 1080p display is crisp, with vivid colours, which our benchmarks can attest to. It's also bright, reaching close to 400nits at peak brightness. The 144Hz refresh rate is also nice, especially for gaming. You should have no trouble hitting those frames as well, considering the hardware onboard.

Alienware X14

Alienware X14 performance

The X14 comes packed with the latest 12th gen Intel Core i7-12700H processor. The 14 cores and 20 threads should have no trouble meeting any and all of your multitasking needs, as can be seen on our Cinebench R20, R23 and PCMark10 benchmark results.

Alienware X14

Alienware X14

Alienware X14

We tested the 16GB LPDDR5 memory several times on AIDA64; however we did come across an anomaly where the L1 read and write speeds were always far too low to be right. However, the memory read and write speed speaks for itself.

Alienware X14

The X14 also has fast NVMe storage, with our variant having 512GB of storage. We were getting close to 6500 MB/s read speeds and 4000 MB/s write speeds in our tests, which are close to as advertised and fantastic.

Alienware X14

Next we come to the 3DMark performance. On paper, the Alienware X14 has great specs. For the most part, this reflects on our benchmark results as well. However, when compared to the similarly specced Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i which has the same processor and GPU, the X14 just barely falls short in some benchmarks.

Alienware X14

The same continues with real-world gaming benchmarks as well, with the X14 at par or slightly behind the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i. This may well have to do with the X14 running comparatively hotter due to its compact nature.

Alienware X14

Alienware X14 Noise and Heat

Alienware X14

The X14 is no slouch when it comes to gaming. However, with a laptop so compact, it becomes hard to find a proper cooling solution while trying to keep the noise down. The X14 has two fans, each independently controlled to cool the CPU and GPU. While this certainly keeps the temps somewhat in check, you could be forgiven for thinking the X14 was about to take off of a runway. It does actually get that loud. But the tradeoff is worth it in our opinion, better to be loud than hot. At least in the case of a gaming laptop.

Alienware X14 Verdict

All things said and done, the Alienware X14 is an impressive machine. It's compact, looks extremely stylish, and comes with some crazy specs. However, it could have done more in the specs department for the price, since you can get similar and in some cases even better gaming performance on cheaper laptops, such as some of the ASUS TUF laptops, and even the Lenovo Gaming 3i we compared the X14 against in this review. That being said, we totally wouldn't fault you for going for this just for its looks if you have the moolah for it.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Desktop Processor Review: Knocking it out of the park, yet again

AMD Ryzen 7950X, like it’s predecessor, the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, is a 16-Core / 32-Thread processor featuring a host of new improvements including a new microarchitecture in the form of AMD Zen 4, much higher clock speeds, IPC improvement of close to 13 per cent, shift to a more efficient TSMC 5nm process, inclusion of current gen graphics cores across all SKUs, support for DDR5 and PCIe Gen 5.0 and a new AM5 LGA socket. With so many high-impact changes over the Ryzen 5000 series processors, the new AMD Ryzen 7000 series of processors has plenty of things that can really push it over the edge but it has an equal number of things that can go wrong. Hopefully, that’s not the case.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Specifications

Moving to the more power-efficient TSMC 5nm process is going to help the Ryzen 7000 quite a bit on the power efficiency front. The AMD Ryzen 7000 series can eke out up to 49 per cent more performance on a 16-Core processor compared to the Ryzen 5000 series at the same socket power and core count. And if the performance were to be normalised, then the Ryzen 7000 series can manage to do so while consuming 62 per cent less power. Obviously, these improvements are not just because of the shift to the TSMC 5nm process but also because of all the architectural improvements. One of the easiest ways to see the improvement is by observing the clock speeds. The AMD Ryzen 9 7950X has a base clock speed of 4.5 GHz and a Turbo clock speed of 5.7 GHz. And this is without an improvement to the Precision Boost algorithm.

As for the other specifications, we can see that the L3 Cache per core has remained the same but the L2 Cache has been doubled and is private to each core. L1 Cache is also the same with 32K for the Instructions and 32K for data. The TDP has been raised by a huge amount to 170W compared to the 5950X which was designed for 105W. However, this number doesn’t indicate the power consumption. When AMD states a certain TDP for a processor, it indicates the caps for several parameters. In the case of the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, a TDP of 170W means that the Socket Power is 230 Watts, the Peak Current is 225 Amperes and the Sustained Current can be as high as 160A. This is really going to do a number on the VRM of the motherboards, so always check the peak parameters of the motherboard’s VRM before you decide on buying one.

Lastly, all processors falling under the Ryzen 7000 family will have inbuilt graphics capabilities and instead of getting a really old GPU architecture, we’re getting RDNA 2 IGP Cores in all four processors that are being launched on the 27th of September. The core configuration is the same across all SKUs. Each processor will have two RDNA 2 cores which have a base clock of 400 MHz and a peak clock of 2200 MHz. RDNA 3 GPUs are right around the corner so one could have always hoped for more, but this is good enough. On to the benchmarks then.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Performance

The AMD Ryzen 9 7950X seems to have a lot of potential to beat the competition to become the reigning desktop processor across a wide variety of workloads. Let’s see how that pans out in the benchmarks.

We tested the unit on the following configuration: AMD RYZEN TEST RIG CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Motherboard: ASRock X670E Taichi SSD: WD SN850 1TB NVMe SSD HDD: Seagate FireCuda 2 TB ST2000DX002 RAM: 2x 16 GB Kingston FURY DDR5 @5200 MT/s Cooler: Deepcool 280mm AIO PSU: Cooler Master MWE 850W V2

Gaming

We tested the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X at 1080p resolution with HITMAN 3, Borderlands 3, Far Cry 6, Cyberpunk 2077 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Folks buying an top-tier desktop processor and graphics card such as the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X and the NVIDIA RTX 3080 probably aren't going to be gaming at 1080p resolution, so we'll be adding 1440p and 4K benchmarks once we get done testing those. From the 1080p gaming benchmarks we can see that the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X is at pay with the Intel Core i9-12900K in most benchmarks with the exception of one game -- Far Cry 6 -- where the Intel processor maintained a slight lead. As for HITMAN 3 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the Zen 4 processor seems to have gained a significant lead of up to 40 FPS.

Apple iPhone 15 series may use the Ultra branding for its flagship model instead of Pro Max: Heres what we know

More reports have now surfaced that Apple may replace the current "Pro Max" branding next year with the top-end iPhone 15 series, calling it "Ultra".

The "Pro Max" branding appeared for the first time with the iPhone 11 series in 2019.

According to Apple tracker Mark Gurman, who expects iPhone 15 to come with some "bigger changes," including USB-C (instead of Apple's proprietary Lightning port), the tech giant could introduce a new branding for high-end models.

The company has already launched a rugged Watch Ultra and now has 'M1 Ultra' processor.

According to supply chain analyst Ross Young, the 'Dynamic Island' feature could arrive on all iPhone 15 models.

The company has reportedly started testing the new USB-C feature owing to the European Union's new law that requires all new phones to have USB-C ports by 2024.

Analysts Ming-Chi Kuo has also suggested that "Ultra" will exclusively have a periscope lens (6x or 5x). Also, the Ultra will come with an improved battery life that lasts three-four hours longer.

With all these exclusive upgrades, the iPhone 15 Ultra is expected to go up in price compared to the 14 Pro Max, possibly starting at $1,200 (up from $1,100).

NASA plans to crash spacecraft into asteroid: Heres why

A NASA spacecraft was set to smash into an asteroid early on Tuesday, in a bid to test a technology to defend Earth against potential asteroid or comet hazards in the future.

NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), a first such mission, was set to impact its target asteroid -- which poses no threat to Earth -- at 7.14 p.m. on Monday (4.44 a.m. on Tuesday IST).

"This test will show a spacecraft can autonomously navigate to a target asteroid and intentionally collide with it to change the asteroid's motion in a way that can be measured using ground-based telescopes," the US space agency said in an update.

DART's target is the binary, near-Earth asteroid system Didymos, composed of the roughly 780-metre diameter "Didymos" and the smaller, approximately 160-metre size "Dimorphos", which orbits Didymos.

DART will impact Dimorphos to change its orbit within the binary system, and the DART Investigation Team will compare the results of DART's kinetic impact with the asteroidAto highly detailed computer simulations of kinetic impacts on asteroids, according to NASA.

"Doing so will evaluate the effectiveness of this mitigation approach and assess how best to apply it to future planetary defense scenarios, as well as how accurate the computer simulations are and how well they reflect the behaviour of a real asteroid," the space agency added.

DART will provide important data to help better prepare for an asteroid that might pose an impact hazard to Earth, should one ever be discovered.

Apple iPhone 14 assembly begins at Foxconn facility in India, but what about other iPhones

Apple has begun assembling its new iPhone 14 at the Foxconn facility in India, a first in years when a new iPhone is being assembled within weeks of its global launch in the country, the tech giant confirmed on Monday.

The locally-assembled iPhone 14 will go on sale in the country in the fourth quarter, as the company bolsters its local manufacturing.

Foxconn is assembling the new iPhone 14 at its Sriperumbudur facility near Chennai.

"The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We're excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India," Apple said in a statement.

The tech giant first started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with iPhone SE.

The tech giant manufactures some of its most advanced iPhones in the country, including iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, at the Foxconn facility, while iPhone SE and iPhone 12 are being assembled at the Wistron factory in the country.

As India doubles down on local manufacturing of technology products, Apple is likely to move 5 per cent of its new iPhone 14 production to India by the end of this year, and 25 per cent by 2025, according to a JP Morgan analysis.

Analysts have earlier predicted that Apple has shortened the production period of its new iPhones in India this year, barely six weeks or so from the production cycle in China.

Next year, Apple iPhone 15 may see its production at the Foxconn and Wistron manufacturing facilities in India at the exact production time with China.

"India's iPhone supply chain has historically supplied only legacy models. Interestingly, Apple has requested that EMS vendors manufacture iPhone 14/14 Plus models in India in 4Q22, within two to three months of the start of production in Mainland China," according to the JP Morgan report.

"The much shorter interval implies the increasing importance of India production and likely higher iPhone allocations to India manufacturing in the future," the report noted.

"We believe Apple only produces iPhone 14/14 Plus models in India now due to the more complex camera module alignment of the iPhone Pro series (done by EMS vendors) and higher local market demand for the iPhone 14 series (tax savings)," it added.

Buoyed by the ease-of-doing business and friendly local manufacturing policies, Apple's 'Make in India' iPhones will potentially account for close to 85 per cent of its total iPhone production for the country this year.

The company acquired Oxenfree developer Night School Studio last year.

The company will release 'Desta: The Memories Between', the latest project from Monument Valley developer Ustwo, on September 27. It also teased that the critically acclaimed Kentucky Route Zero would "soon" be available for free as well.

Samsung phones may come with dual under-display cameras for facial recognition in the future: How it could work

South Korean tech giant Samsung is likely working on a camera system for facial recognition that involves two under-display cameras.

According to GSMArena, it is described in a patent application Samsung filed with the KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) back in March 2021. The document in question was made public last week and picked up by a Dutch publication.

At its core, the idea is relatively straightforward -- get multiple images of the user from two angles to better construct a 3D model of the face and use that for authentication purposes.

The tech giant mentioned using under-display cameras, though, which is interesting in its own right. Up until now, it has more or less just experimented with the technology on its Galaxy Fold line without a broader release, the report said.

The patent does not really go into so much detail. However, it does show a mockup of a regular "slab" style phone with two UDC cameras -- one at the top and one at the bottom. Another thing mentioned in the patent is measuring pupil size.

As per the report, the idea is that a human's pupil size should vary depending on lighting conditions.

This could be used as an extra security measure against using things like photos or masks to trick facial authentication.

Fitbit will require its users to login using their Google account from next year: Here are its data sharing implications

Google-owned wearable brand Fitbit is planning to make Google Accounts mandatory on new Fitbit devices from next year.

According to Fitbit, Google will not use Fitbit health and wellness data for Google Ads.

"After we launch Google accounts on Fitbit in 2023, some uses of Fitbit will require a Google account, including to sign up for Fitbit or activate newly released Fitbit devices and features, "the wearable brand said on a support page.

"If you have a Fitbit account, after the launch of Google accounts on Fitbit, you'll have the option to move Fitbit to your Google account or to continue to use your existing Fitbit devices and services with your Fitbit account for as long as it's supported," it added.

The company said Google accounts on Fitbit will support several benefits for Fitbit users, including a single login for Fitbit and other Google services, account security, centralised privacy controls for Fitbit user data, and more features from Google on Fitbit.

After the launch of Google accounts on Fitbit, if you want to move from your Fitbit account to your Google account, you will need to consent to transfer your Fitbit user data from Fitbit to Google.

Once you complete the move, you will log into Fitbit with your Google account and no longer with your Fitbit account.

Google will then provide you with Fitbit under Google's Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and binding commitments for Fitbit.

GTA 6 and Uber hacker reportedly caught by London police: Know details

As part of a UK's National Cyber Crime Unit investigation, a 17-year-old teenager was detained on suspicion of Rockstar Games hack that led to a major Grand Theft Auto (GTA) VI leak.

According to the reports, the alleged hacker might have also been involved in an intrusion on ride-hailing service Uber.

"@CityPolice confirm 17-year-old arrested over hacking incident; source says the crime is related to intrusion on Rockstar Games and possibly Uber Technologies," prominent journalist Matthew Keys tweeted.

This month Uber has blamed the infamous Lapsus$ hacking group for the cyber attack on its internal systems recently.

Uber had also mentioned that "there are also reports that this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar Games".

Meanwhile, Rockstar Games' confirmed 'network intrusion' resulted in the leak of 90 videos of GTA VI, showcasing its engine, gameplay and more from an early development build.

The leak provided a glimpse into GTA 6 development, confirming prior reports of the series' first female protagonist and a Vice City setting.

The title, informally known as GTA 6, will mark the first mainline game since 2013's GTA V, having racked up a record-breaking 170 million sales to date.

Mozilla criticizes Google, Microsoft, and Apple for browser lock-ins: Here are the anti-competitive allegations raised by the Firefox-maker

Mozilla, the developer of Firefox Internet browser, has hit out at the trinity of Apple, Google and Microsoft, saying their operating systems make it very difficult for browsers like open source Firefox to be used on the platforms they control.

In a report, Mozilla said that these operating systems make it "difficult or impossible for a consumer to switch browsers," by setting the company's own browser as the default and in prime position on the home screen.

One of the ways Mozilla seeks to do this is through developing and investing in its own Gecko browser engine.

"This matters because there are only three main browser engine providers left: Google, Apple and Mozilla - but Apple's engine only runs on Apple devices. So, without Mozilla, the only cross-platform browser engine would be provided by Google," said the report.

"Putting the development of cross-platform web browsers in the hands of a single company creates not only a concentration of power, but also a single point of failure," it added.

The Mozilla Firefox browser had a 3.16 per cent market share worldwide in August.

Apple Safari and Microsoft Edge browsers have 18.78 per cent and 4.3 per cent market share, respectively.

The web browsing market is dominated by Google Chrome, at 65.52 per cent market share, according to web traffic analysis website StatCounter.

Mozilla said in its research report that even when an alternative browser is downloaded and selected as default, this decision is not applied in all circumstances.

"The operating system provider will in some scenarios bypass this decision and present their own browser rather than the selected default and in other cases it will seek to undermine or reverse this decision," it lamented.

Mozilla said that as Big Tech has so far failed to do better, "regulators, policymakers and lawmakers have spent considerable time and resources investigating digital markets".

"They should, therefore, be in a good position to recognise the importance of browser competition and to act to prevent further harm to consumers from continued inaction and competitive stagnation," the company said.

Mozilla called on them "to enforce the laws which already exist and the laws and regulations which will soon come into force".

Google Pixel 7 series prices are likely to be the same as Pixel 6 series: Find the expected pricing here

As Google prepares to launch its next Pixel 7 smartphone series, a new report claims that there will not be any price change from the Pixel 6 series.

Google has already confirmed that the next-generation Pixel 7 series will come to India, to be available on Flipkart.

Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii tweeted the prices for the upcoming devices -- $599 for the Pixel 7 and $899 for the Pixel 7 Pro.

"From a source I trust 100 per cent, here comes Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro US pricing, according to current data in Target's systems. First up, Pixel 7, codenamed Panther, $599, available in Snow, Obsidian, and Lemongrass colours," he said in a tweet.

"Pixel 7 Pro, codenamed Cheetah, will cost $899, available in Obsidian, Hazel, and Snow colours," he added.

For Pixel lovers, it is good news as the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were already priced really well and both the iPhone 14 and Samsung Galaxy S22 start at $799.

Reports say that Pixel 7 will have a 6.3-inch display, slightly smaller than the 6.4-inch screen available on the Pixel 6.

The Tensor G2 chipset will power the series, which is all set to launch on October 6. The new chipset will utilise the same CPU as the original Tensor.

The tech giant first teased the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro at I/O in May, and is likely to launch the device next month, alongside the Pixel Watch.

Will the Indian Government launch 5G services in India on Oct 1

New Delhi, Sep 24 (IANS) The National Broadband Mission (NBM) under the Ministry of Communications on Saturday tweeted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will roll out 5G services in India on October 1, as the India Mobile Congress (IMC) kicks off on the same day.

However, the tweet disappeared within no time from the NBM handle on the micro-blogging platform.

"Taking India's digital transformation & connectivity to new heights, Hon'ble PM, @narendramodi, will roll out 5G services in India; at India Mobile Congress; Asia's largest technology exhibition," read the screenshot of the tweet.

According to industry sources, the country may not yet be prepared to roll out 5G services from October 1, and may need some more days for the new technology to be in place.

During his Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the Prime Minister had said that the 5G services will be launched in India soon.

Jointly organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the sixth edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) will take place at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, from October 1-4.

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw last month said the government expects 5G services to be rolled out in the country by October 12, and the Centre will make sure that the prices are affordable for the consumers.

Vaishnaw said that installations are being done and telecom operations are busy with the seamless rollout of 5G services.

The government will ensure that the 5G plans remain affordable for the public, the minister said.

The 5G services would be rolled out in a phased manner and during the first phase, 13 cities are likely to get the 5G internet services.

The cities are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune.

Just like 3G and 4G, telcos will soon announce dedicated 5G tariff plans and according to industry experts, consumers may pay more to access the 5G services on their devices.

An immediate tariff war with the launch of 5G is unlikely, but it "will be competitive as India continues to be a price-conscious market".

Apple set to launch new MacBook Pro models as suppliers gear up

New Delhi, Sep 24 (IANS) Apple is set to release new MacBook devices next month and suppliers are "gearing up" for the shipments of upcoming laptops.

According to a report in DigiTimes, Apple plans to release new MacBook models in the fourth quarter this year and if we go by the previous announcements, the company normally launches new hardware in the month of October.

This report also said that Apple is gearing up to launch a 15-inch MacBook Air and a 12-inch device by early 2024.

According to earlier reports, Apple is likely to unveil a new MacBook Pro with 5-nanometer chips.

These are likely to be the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips and will be found inside the 14-inch and 16-inch models, said the report.

The Mac mini is also a possibility for a fall 2022 launch.

According to rumours, a new iMac and iMac Pro is also in the pipeline but not this year.

Another product that might be showcased is the first mixed-reality headset by Apple.

Also, the 10th generation of iPad with A14 chip is expected this fall, that will feature an all-new design that mimics the iPad Pro in terms of a flat design.

The renderings on social media have shown a vertical rear camera lens similar to that on iPhone X.

Apple iPad Pro is likely to house M2 chip as an upgrade to the current models with M1 chip.

The iPad Pro may also come with wireless charging with MagSafe and mini LED, backlighting for the 11-inch iPad Pro.

Ear tips in new AirPods Pro incompatible with older model: Apple

New Delhi, Sep 24 (IANS) Apple has explained that new silicone ear tips with the second-generation AirPods Pro are not compatible with the older generation of AirPods Pro.

In a support document, the tech giant said the original AirPods Pro ear tips have "noticeably denser mesh" in comparison with the second-generation ear tips.

"Ear tips have been designed specifically for their AirPods Pro generation, to deliver the highest-fidelity audio experience," said the company.

As a result, "use the ear tips that come with your AirPods Pro".

The company explained the reason for this, saying that AirPods Pro (1st generation) ear tips have noticeably denser mesh than AirPods Pro (2nd generation) ear tips.

However, using older ear tips won't affect the sound or noise-cancellation quality on new AirPods.

The problem users will face is the proper fit in the ear with old tips owing to dense mesh.

With the new H2 chip, AirPods Pro, available in India for Rs 26,900, provides an exceptional acoustic experience and cancels up to twice as much noise over the previous generation AirPods Pro.

This time, a new extra small ear tip is included so even more people can experience the magic of AirPods Pro.

With a new low-distortion audio driver and custom amplifier, AirPods Pro now offer richer bass and crystal-clear sound across a wider range of frequencies.

With Touch control on AirPods Pro, a light swipe up or down on the stem enables quick volume adjustments.

AirPods Pro offer 1.5 hours of additional listening time over the first generation, for a total of up to six hours with Active Noise Cancellation.
