Arm semiconductor chips are reportedly in the making: Heres what we know so far

Arm won’t just design, but also manufacture chips as per a new FT report. The British company which is known for selling design IPs to brands like Apple, Qualcomm, Nvidia, etc. is aiming for vertical expansion into the chip-making business. Here’s what we know so far about this.

Arm’s semiconductor business plans

History of Arm

As already mentioned, Arm's semiconductor plans include not just designing, but also manufacturing chips, states the report. However, since it’s new to the game, it will seek help from manufacturing partners.

The report reveals Arm has created a "solutions engineering" team that’s tasked with the development of prototype chips. These chipsets will be used in mobile phones, laptops, and other electronic devices.

The company has reportedly made some strides so far. It has been working on an advanced chip for the last 6 months. This is said to be a step above the current chips.

Once its IPO happens sometime this year, Arm could announce its efforts to the public.

History of Arm in the semiconductor business

Arm

Acorn Archimedes

Recently, Arm signed a partnership with Intel whereby Arm’s partners involved in semiconductor manufacturing can use Intel foundries to make the chips. The foundries will be in particular used for making mobile SoCs in the beginning.

This and the new report of its loftier business plans all seem to have been set in motion post the collapse of its deal with Nvidia. Nvidia was going to buy Arm from its current parent, viz. Japan’s Softbank. This could have been the biggest deal on record valued at $40 billion. But regulatory challenges pushed it to fall apart.

Still, Arm has been doing well in terms of revenue from its server-chips business, chip sales in the automotive sector, and Arm V9-based processors in smartphones. Recently, it has also announced its intention to raise the royalty and licencising fees.

So in its over 3-decade existence, the company named ARM (short for Acorn RISC Machine), whose first product was a RISC processor for a personal computer called Acorn Archimedes, has its design-based chips in almost every major electronic product.

Now only time can tell if it manages to directly compete with its customers, and showcase the actual potential of an Arm-based chip. Let’s see where it goes from here.

Nintendo destroys a hackers life, makes him pay 10 million over the course of his entire life

It’s clear that Nintendo ain’t playing around. The Japanese video game giant recently dropped the sledgehammer on a hacker named Gary Bowser. Yep, you read that right. The guy’s name is Bowser. Anyway, the company decided to make an example of the hacker by suing him for an insane amount of money and jail time.

Gary was then thrown in prison for three years. He was part of a team that would manufacture chips that allowed pirated games to be played on the 3DS and even the Switch. Nintendo is not about that life and decided to really make an example out of the guy. And as far as I am concerned, fair enough.

Nintendo

Nintendo sues hacker for $10 million

Gary was then released from prison earlier this year and has to now pay Nintendo $10 million in damages. A Canadian citizen, Bowser was incarcerated at the Northwest Detention Centre in Washington. After he is released, Gary Bowser will then be allowed to go back to his home in Canada. Again, this just means that he’ll have to pay Nintendo $10 million from up North.

Mario ain’t letting this one go so easily. He will have six months as a grace period, after which he will have to start paying Nintendo back. From what we've read, it seems that even if Gary finds a job, 25 to 30% of his salary will be deducted in order to pay off Nintendo.

In an interview with Nintendo Life, Bowser stated that Nintendo can take between 25% to 30% of his monthly gross income. As of right now, Gary has paid Nintendo about $175. He has a long, long way before even scratching the surface of the actual amount that has to be repaid.

As a part of Team Xecutor, Gary and his friends manufactures chips that could circumvent Nintendo’s firewalls and allow users to load pirated games. We can all see why Nintendo did this and while we’re all cheering for the little guy, this just feels right. You can’t steal and augment a company’s hardware.

Nintendo’s

Look, Nintendo is not messing about here so if you’re thinking of nudging them, be ready to face a Kamikaze bombing run by the Japanese.

Apple completes 25 years in India: What CEO Tim Cook said about the milestone

As a brand, Apple has cemented itself as a mainstay in the world of smartphones, laptops, and now wearables and accessories. The brand’s love affair with India, predates its existence. It started when its co-founder, Steve Jobs, fell in love with the country and started visiting India before even establishing the brand. This week marks the completion of 25 years of the brand in India, as it gears up for the inauguration of its first official Apple stores in India.

In case you didn't know, Apple is set to open two stores in India. The first is in Mumbai and is opening on April 18, and the second is in Delhi set to open on April 20. This comes on the back of the rising affinity of the Indian populous towards the brand. That mainly comes from iPhones and MacBooks having a sense of ownership-pride attached to them.

A lot more to come

apple

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, commented on the completion of this milestone and said, “At Apple, our mission is to enrich lives and empower people around the world.” He added, “India has such a beautiful culture and an incredible energy, and we’re excited to build on our long-standing history — supporting our customers, investing in local communities, and working together to build a better future with innovations that serve humanity.”

After years of importing its iPhones from its main manufacturing hub, China, in 2017, Apple began manufacturing phones in India in 2017. This move was welcomed with a lot of excitement both by the government and the fans of the brand. While it has been successful in many ways, there have been a few hiccups along the way. A Financial Times article published in February this year revealed that about half the Apple iPhone housings that were made in India were rejected during quality checks.

While this may seem like a major hit to India’s relationship with Apple as a whole, there are ways in which amends can be made. And, I am sure that the brand, and its associates in India would have already set the ball rolling on the fixes that need to be made to get things back on track. India, as a market and manufacturing hub, still has a lot to offer to Apple. It will be interesting to see how the relationship between one of the biggest personal electronics markets and one of the biggest personal electronics brands shapes up in the future.

Apple BKC: 5 key features customers can look forward to in an Apple Store

Apple has been known for providing excellent shopping experiences to its customers in its stores. For many Indians, the stories of those experiences, which they’d read on Reddit threads and forums, are now set to come to life with the inauguration of Apple’s first brick-and-mortar store in Mumbai. India’s first Apple Stores, set to be inaugurated in Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai and Saket in Delhi, will help the fans of the brand to get their taste of the experience of shopping at Apple’s own store.

Apple

The Cupertino-based giant has been expanding its presence in India year after year, targeting the growing number of users of Apple products and the chance to indoctrinate them into the Apple Ecosystem. Previously, in India Apple had launched its official online store, which became a hub for people to go, checkout, and purchase the best products offered by the brand. However, apart from the multi-brand electronics retail stores and some official reseller stores, the brand had no presence in India’s brick-and-mortar storefront scene. Now, with the launch, and expected expansion of Apple Stores in India, things are looking promising. And, before you rush to Apple’s Store in BKC, let’s have a look at some of the features and experiences that help make Apple Stores special –

Learn from Apple – Apple, in a bid to foster a creative mindset in the community around its brand, runs a very interesting “Today at Apple” program. This program is essentially an upskilling endeavour by the brand for its customers, where they learn to make the most of their products. The sessions organised as a part of this program include everything from basic and simple lessons to professional grade programs, which are taught by Apple Creatives, who themselves are skilled artists and creators.

Genius at your service – For starters, any Apple Store experience cannot be complete without the Genius Bar support experience. Loved by many, hated by some, there’s one thing that cannot be discounted when talking about the Genius Bar at Apple Stores – they are there to help, and they do their jobs well. And, in a market like India, where a chunk of the population is still fairly new to the ecosystem, having a strong support structure in place at the store makes the buying experience better for the uninitiated.

Apple

Switch over – If you are someone who is migrating from an Android device, or a device that is running on any other mobile operating system than iOS, the team at Apple Store is there to help. They'll help you transfer all your data from one device to the other.

Pick it up when you want – At the time of purchase, Apple will make sure that you get your product when you want. After you have placed the order, you can choose to get it delivered to your place as early as the next day, or schedule a pickup at the store at your convenience.

Open to everyone – At Apple’s stores, accessibility for everyone is at the forefront, with the brand making sure that everyone is easily able to move through the store, and have a pleasant shopping experience. The brand strives to make the shopping experience at its stores more inclusive for everyone.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see how Apple’s image as a brand and service provider change in India. They have been making some serious efforts to expand their reach in different markets of the world in unique ways, which makes things all the more interesting.

Apple’s store in BKC, Mumbai is set to open on April 18, followed by Apple’s store in Saket, New Delhi, which will open its doors on Apr 20, 2023.

5 assistive tools on major operating systems for helping people with autism

It’s World Autism Awareness Day and on this occasion, we have compiled a list of accessibility settings on major operating systems from Microsoft, Apple, and Google that could help autistic people. But, before we get into assistive tools, for the unversed, here’s a brief description of what Autism means:

What is Autism?

Autism Day

As per National Center for Autism India, Autism or Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder which is lifelong and neurological. It includes a triad of impairments in the form of verbal or non-verbal communication, social interactions and activities involving imagination, play and leisure. People with autism may show restricted or repetitive behaviours or interests that may seem unusual or atypical.

Now, every major operating system that we interact with daily has built-in tools to assist autistic people. Let’s have a look at them.

Assistive tools for people with autism

Focus Assist

1. Focus Assist (Windows 11 and 10): Also called Quiet Hours in previous Windows versions, this feature lets you silence notifications when you don’t want to be disturbed by them. For a person with autism, this should allow them to avoid sensory overload and focus better.

2. Immersive Reader (Microsoft Edge browser on Windows): With just a tap of a button, you get to change the font size, spacing, and colour contrast for a pleasing reading experience for not just people with autism but also regular people.

3. Read Aloud (Microsoft Edge browser on Windows): It reads aloud text on the screen, letting specially abled folks focus on what’s written on the screen.

4. Guided Access (iOS) and Restricted user profile (Android): Both settings let you restrict the device access to only one app at a time. To access anything else, one must enter a password. So, you can help people with spectrum disorder focus on the task (or app) at hand.

3 upcoming Nothing product launches include Phone 2, Ear 2, and a speaker

One could say that Nothing had fairly successful releases in its first go. We got the Nothing Phone (1), Nothing Ear (1), and Nothing Ear Stick. Now, it seems like we are about to witness the successors. Nothing has started drip-feeding the news circulation with details about its upcoming products such as Nothing Phone 2, Nothing Ear 2, and Nothing speakers. Here’s what we know about them.

1. Nothing Phone 2

Nothing Phone 2

We first heard about Nothing Phone 2 during the MWC 2023 when the company chief Carl Pei and Qualcomm’s Cristiano Amon stood holding a T-shirt with “Phone 2” and “8” imprinted on it. Later, Alex Katouzian, Qualcomm SVP and GM accidentally revealed in a LinkedIn post that the processor in question is Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC.

Nothing Phone 2

2. Nothing Ear 2

Nothing Phone 2

We have come across the leaked Nothing Ear 2 renders a while back, credits to Smartprix and OnLeaks. From those images, we learned that the Ear 2 could have a new position for the noise-cancelling microphones and some internal components.

The rumour is that we could get Personalized ANC, Transparency Mode, Dual Connectivity, Advanced EQ, and a Find Earbuds feature on the Nothing Ear (2).

The company has scheduled a launch event for Ear 2 on March 15, 2023. Perhaps, on the same day, we could hear about the Nothing Phone (2) and even the Nothing speakers.

3. Nothing speakers

Nothing Phone 2

From the renders shared by Kuba Wojciechowski via 91Mobiles, we get to see a boxy-shaped speaker with a bunch of buttons on either side. These could comprise volume rockers, power, etc. One of these is a red-accented button and there is also a protruding button. On the front, there are multiple speaker cutouts. Some of them could be tweakers and the rest could be sub-woofers. One of them also displays the ‘Nothing’ logo. We should have more details as we inch closer to the launch.

iOS 163 released with FIDO security keys for Apple ID: Heres how it works

A physical security key is a small external device, resembling a thumb drive or tag, that is used for verification during two-factor authentication when signing in with an Apple ID. These keys provide additional protection against phishing attacks.

What are Apple’s Security Keys?

Apple devices

Security keys for Apple ID are an optional advanced security feature intended for those who desire extra protection from targeted attacks such as phishing or social engineering. Two-factor authentication, which ensures that only authorized individuals can access your Apple ID account, requires the input of two pieces of information to sign in to a new device or on the web. The first being your Apple ID password. A security key can function as the second piece of information, instead of the typical six-digit verification code. Utilizing a physical key instead of a code enhances the two-factor authentication process and reduces the risk of an attacker intercepting or requesting your second authentication factor.

It's important to keep your security keys in a secure location and consider having more than one key. For instance, having one at home and another at work, or leaving one at home while traveling.

Apple ID Security Keys: Basic Requirements

To use security keys with your Apple devices, you will need:

At least two FIDO® Certified* security keys that are compatible with the devices you regularly use. The latest version of iOS 16.3, iPad OS 16.3, or macOS Ventura 13.3 on all devices where you are signed in with your Apple ID. Two-factor authentication is set up for your Apple ID. A modern web browser. If you are unable to sign in using your security key on the web, update your browser to the latest version or try a different browser. To sign in to Apple Watch, Apple TV, or HomePod after setting up security keys, an iPhone or iPad with a software version that supports security keys is required.

*FIDO is an industry-standard for passwordless authentication that enables secure user verification.

Apple ID Security Keys: What doesn’t work?

Apple devices

Security keys are not supported in the following scenarios: Signing in to iCloud for Windows. Signing in to older devices that are not able to be updated to a software version that supports security keys. Child accounts and Managed Apple IDs are not supported. Apple Watches that are paired with another family member's iPhone cannot use security keys. To use security keys with your watch, it must first be set up with your own iPhone. What do you need to know about choosing the right security keys?

Security keys for Apple ID are compatible with any FIDO® Certified security key. Some options include:

YubiKey 5C NFC (compatible with a majority of Mac and iPhone models) YubiKey 5Ci (compatible with a majority of Mac and iPhone models) FEITAN ePass K9 NFC USB-A (compatible with older Mac models and most iPhone models) If you opt for a different security key, ensure that it is FIDO® Certified and has a connector that works with the Apple devices you frequently use. What connectors can be used?

Security keys that feature both near-field communication (NFC) and a USB-C connector are compatible with most Apple devices. Keys that have NFC only work with iPhones and they connect to your device by simply tapping them. USB-C connectors are compatible with most Mac models and with iPhones if you have a Lightning-to-USB-C adapter. Keys with lightning connectors work with most iPhone models and USB-A connectors work with older Mac models, and can also work with newer Mac models when using a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter.

How to use Security Keys for Apple ID?

When using Security Keys for Apple ID, you will require a trusted device or a security key to:

Sign in to a new device or the web with your Apple ID. Reset your Apple ID password or unlock your Apple ID. Add or remove security keys. How to add security keys using your iPhone or iPad? Open the Settings app. Tap your name and then tap Password & Security. Tap Add Security Keys and follow the on-screen instructions to add your keys. Review the devices associated with your Apple ID and choose to either: Stay signed in to all active devices. Select devices that you no longer want to have access to your account and sign out of them. How to add security keys using your Mac?

To add security keys:

Select System Preferences from the Apple menu. Click your name and then click Password & Security. Next to Security Keys, click the Add button and then follow the on-screen instructions to add your keys. Review the devices associated with your Apple ID and choose to either: Stay signed in to all devices. Select devices that you no longer want to have access to your account and sign out of them.

Now, buying a Geyser without considering all the factors which need to be considered is not a very smart move. Geysers have many types and not every Geyser can be used anywhere. There are small-capacity instant Geysers which are usually used for kitchens or small families and then there are big Geysers which are used for a family of 7-8 persons. So check out these factors which should be considered before buying a Geyser.

Factors to consider before buying Geysers  Capacity needed- there are two types of Geysers; Instant Geysers 1-5L (used for small families of 2-6 members) and Storage Geysers 6-25L (used for big families of 7-8 members. Geyser shapes should also be considered before buying it according to your bathroom or the spot where you want to place it. The wattage of the Geyser explains how long it will take to heat the water.  What type of water will be supplied is also a factor which should be kept in mind because hard water is one major reason for reducing the lifespan of heaters. So choose the product which matches the type of supplied water. You should always go for trusted brands as there are many brands in India which sell geysers now but with a low-quality build which can be dangerous. Building type is another factor because some Geysers don’t work at a particular height because of the high pressure. Make sure you don’t buy those if you are living in a tall building. The water heater also shoots up the electricity bill so buy the one which is energy efficient and saves electricity.

What is Grogu, Googles AirTag competitor

Apple’s AirTag changed the personal tracker market by offering a simple solution for people who want to keep track of items like keys, wallets, smartphones, luggage, handbags and more. Now, it seems that Google is working on a product that will be the direct competitor to Apple’s AIrTags. The offering is reportedly nicknamed Grogu.

Grogu What do we know about Google’s Grogu so far?

According to Kuba Wojciechowski, who is a known leakster in this space, Google’s Grogu will be similar in functionality to Apple’s AirTags. It may come with a speaker, offer multiple colours, and may also offer support for Bluetooth LE and ultra-wideband (UWB). The product has been named Grogu because that is Baby Yoda’s real name in The Mandalorian.

Google has equipped the Pixel smartphones with UWB technology since the Pixel 6 series, however, we have not really seen the company do anything specific with it yet. Perhaps the intention behind using the technology is to eventually make it compatible with the upcoming tracker so that users can get super-specific location data for their items.

Apple AirTags When will Google’s Grogu launch?

At this point, the leakster has not revealed any information regarding the launch timelines for Google’s Grogu. The real name of the product is also under wraps. Many believe that the tracker may be announced during Google I/O in the spring of this year, with an eventual launch in October during the company’s annual hardware event. This is something we’ll know as we get closer to Google I/O.

Apple could reportedly share the microLED love with iPhones and other products

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to use its own microLED displays in the Apple iPhone, iPad, and Mac, after first showcasing the technology in the Apple Watch Ultra. The new Apple Watch Ultra, which will be equipped with a microLED display, is slated to launch at the end of 2024.

MicroLED displays: What’s the fuss about?

 iPhone microLED

The latest edition of the Power On newsletter carries a post where Gurman has explained that Apple has been working on the microLED technology for almost six years. This will be the first custom-designed display offered by the company, the same way the Apple Silicon will be its first custom-designed chipset. It is speculated that the microLED display will make its debut with the new Apple Watch Ultra.

According to Gurman, Apple began working on its microLED project, known as T159, in 2017. This display is claimed to offer better colour reproduction, more brightness, and better viewing angles, which should make it look as though the images are painted on the display glass. With this, Apple intends to replace the displays it sources from Samsung and LG.

We may see these displays in all Apple products

Apple iPhone

Once the microLED display makes its debut with the Apple Watch Ultra (2024), it may also make its way to the iPhone, iPad and Mac afterwards. The idea, he believes, is to make the display an offering that comes with all Apple products. However, the technology itself is quite complex and it may take as much as a decade for it to make its way to the Mac. The Apple iPhone may be the first to get this technology (after the Apple Watch), followed by the iPad.

Indian banks will use face recognition and iris scans soon

meant to reduce tax evasion as well as fraud. While the government sources declined to reveal any names, they did say that a few well-known public and private banks are already using this technology to enhance customer security. This verification step is not mandatory. It is meant to be used in situations where the bank may not have other identification cards such as the PAN card.

Concerns over user privacy

Indian Banks

Of course, with any technology that relies on human data to function, there are a few concerns over customer privacy already. "This raises substantial privacy concerns especially when India lacks a dedicated law on privacy, cybersecurity and facial recognition," said Pavan Duggal, an advocate and cyber law expert.

Who has to go through these security measures?

Indian Banks

Individuals who make withdrawals and deposits exceeding Rs. 2 million in a financial year and have only shared their Aadhar cards with the bank will be required to go through the security procedures at the request of the bank.

A Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) spokesperson elaborated that this will only happen with the customer’s consent. He also said, “UIDAI regularly advises all authentication and verification entities to use face or iris authentications to cater to residents whose fingerprint authentication fails.”

Apple might soon open physical stores in India: Find details here

The Financial Times recently reported that Apple is now hiring to fill positions in a rumoured physical store that will open in India. The company has posted job openings across “various locations” for 12 retail stores. These openings include roles such as Genius Bar workers, store leaders, store managers, and so on. The part-time and full-time positions refer to the unconfirmed Apple Stores, however, there is no information regarding how many roles there are.

Apple has already begun hiring for its physical store

Apple

According to The Financial Times, Apple has already hired five employees in New Delhi and Mumbai. Apple’s head of recruiting in India, Renu Sevanthi, confirmed the same on LinkedIn.

Last year, The Economic Times reported that Apple was planning to open a store spanning 22,000 square feet in Mumbai at the beginning of 2023. They are also going to open a 10,000 - 12,000 square foot store in New Delhi, and others in the country. But, the official opening dates are yet to be confirmed.

More Apple iPhones manufactured in India

 Apple Stores

In other news, Apple has also expanded production in India recently due to the delays in manufacturing caused by internal issues in China. With India all set to increase the scope of production yet again, the tech giant may be viewing the country as a viable manufacturing hub that can beat Vietnam and China when it comes to cheap operational costs. India also represents a large smartphone market, and though only a select few in the country can purchase Apple products, going by the population, even that small demographic represents a large number of consumers. EMI options on e-commerce websites have increased the pool of willing consumers too.
