Google slashes R&D projects as Pichai to make company 20 more efficient

San Francisco, Sep 15 (IANS) Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai aims to make the company 20 per cent more efficient hinting at job cuts, as the tech giant cancelled the projects at its in-house research and development (R&D) division called Area 120.

Addressing the gathering at the Code Conference in the US, Pichai said that the more the company tries to understand the macroeconomic conditions, it feels very uncertain about it.

"The macroeconomic performance is correlated to ad spend, consumer spend and so on," he told the audience.

TechCrunch reported that the company is slashing projects at its in-house R&D division Area 120 that has nearly 100 employees.

"We've recently shared that Area 120 will be shifting its focus to projects that build on Google's deep investment in AI and have the potential to solve important user problems. As a result, Area 120 is winding down several projects to make way for new work," a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Affected team members "will receive dedicated support as they explore new projects and opportunities at Google", the spokesperson added.

Area 120 has launched several products, like gaming platform GameSnacks, an AirTable rival called Tables, an AI-powered conversational ads platform AdLingo, video platforms Tangi and Shoploop, and more.

Google has suspended hiring new employees and reportedly told some existing employees to "shape up or ship out" if expectations are not met.

As Big Tech companies lay off employees in the global economic downturn, Google executives have reportedly warned workers to either boost performance or prepare to leave as "there will be blood on the streets" if the next quarterly earnings are not good.

In a company message viewed by Insider, Google Cloud sales leadership has threatened employees with an "overall examination of sales productivity and productivity in general" and that if next quarter results "don't look up, there will be blood on the streets".

Microsoft to allow real-time document signing during Team meetings

San Francisco, Sep 15 (IANS) Tech giant Microsoft has created a sample app for Teams that allow people to sign documents during remote meetings.

According to Windows Central, the application lets users add a document to a meeting for attendees to sign, such as a purchase agreement, invoice, or NDA.

The sample app was made by Teams Ecosystem Engineering as a proof of concept aimed at independent software vendors (ISVs) or other customers implementing it.

The entire project is available and documented on GitHub, which should help organisations that would like to use it within meetings, the report said.

The app allows users to add a document to a meeting to be reviewed or signed by attendees. It supports Teams single-sign-on (SSO) for authentication.

The report mentioned that it also supports sharing content during a meeting stage, adaptive cards, and the Teams people picker.

Microsoft noted that the app could be adapted to work with other scenarios that require signing off, such as reviewing and approving code or working together on a document.

The sample app is currently available for desktop clients of Teams. Mobile and web support is on the way, though Microsoft did not specify when in its Tech Community post announcing the feature, the report said.

Currently, the app only works with users from the same organisation or tenant. Guest and anonymous user support are also on the way, it added.

Apples iPhone 14 line-up may come with 30W fast charging

San Francisco, Aug 30 (IANS) The iPhone 14 lineup may arrive with 30W fast charging, a significant jump from 20W being used in the iPhone 13 lineup.

According to reports, an unnamed charger brand is allegedly sending out 30W iPhone 14 adapters for early access and review.

This company believes Apple will be advertising 30W charging as a feature of the iPhone 14 series, reports AppleInsider.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max was able to support 27W charging temporarily in a test, suggesting that 30W support is possible.

It is not yet clear if the 30W charging would be limited to iPhone 14 Pro models or be available to all four iPhone 14 models.

Apple recently released two 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapters to be used for charging the MacBook Air and iPhone simultaneously.

The iPhone 14 lineup is set to be announced during an event on September 7.

The next-generation iPhone 14, to be produced in India around two months after its China production, will see four models a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a new 6.7-inch iPhone 14, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and a 6.7 iPhone 14 Pro Max, according to reports.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 14 base model is rumoured to cost $799, which is the same price as the iPhone 13.

The tech giant has likely discontinued the 5.4-inch iPhone mini this year.

You can now insert emojis in Google Docs as you type

New Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS) Google has allowed users to insert emojis while writing in Google Docs, as they will not need to pull up emoji icons from other places anymore into their documents.

Google recently added emoji reactions to Docs, and now the users can add them to actual documents. The feature supports the most recent emoji.

"Building upon the recently announced emoji reaction feature, you can now express yourself in a new way by searching for and inserting emojis directly in line with your text in Google Docs," said the company.

The emoji tool is available to all Google Workspace customers, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers, along with users with personal Google accounts.

There is no admin control for this feature. To search for and add emojis directly in line with text in Docs, Google has simple steps to follow.

The simple way is to just type "@ (emoji name)," and typing "@emoji" will pull up a searchable emoji picker, like the one on your smartphone.

The company said the new feature has been rolled out for some users today and will reach everyone by the end of September.

The new system gives users several ways to get the emojis, and Google has listed those on its website.

Apple may inject more ads into iPhones as part of its advertising ambitions: Gurman

Introduced last year, App Tracking Transparency is a privacy feature of iOS that makes developers ask permission from users for cross-app tracking. This has been vehemently opposed by big tech giants like Meta and small app developers for it prevents them from gathering user data that they would otherwise use for pushing relevant ads. This privacy rule conveniently whitelists built-in Apple apps as apparently, they don’t do cross-app tracking. However, the real irony is that Apple itself is reportedly going to sink its teeth into the ad business. The report comes from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.

Ads on iPhones are A-okay, as long as it's from Apple

App Tracking Transparency

Gurman says iOS apps like Maps, Books, and Podcasts could start showing ads in the future. Here’s how he thinks they would transpire:

In Maps, when you search for restaurants, stores, or other nearby businesses, Apple could show ads for popular or recommended spots. In both Books and Podcasts, publishers could potentially place ads in different vacant spaces within both apps. Publishers could also pay to rank their content higher in the search results.  Although the search result page of the App Store already shows ads, soon even the Today tab and app download pages could display ads. The latter may be presented as a “You Might Also Like” section.

App Tracking Transparency

All these seem to be the sign of the times when Apple is looking to focus more on its Services business which includes streaming and advertising. Let’s see how it all pans out.

Twitter Circle Now Available For All: Here Is How To Use It

Twitter is a popular microblogging website but has long suffered from the lack of an engaging community aspect. So, it is mostly people posting their thoughts in 280 characters to the larger universe and it may receive hearts, hate comments, or be downright ignored based on the quality of what you post and how popular you are on the platform. This also means the posts stand exposed to a broader audience with different tastes and preferences than you. But now you can limit the radius to just the people you like or who share similar interests and opinions. Enter Twitter Circle, a new feature on the bluebird app.

Twitter Circle: Here’s how it works

Twitter Circle

Twitter Circle is being released widely but it may take time before you get the feature. When it is available on your end, you will see a prompt asking if you want to share with a small crowd. Twitter Circle allows you to send Tweets to only the people you pick. You can choose up to 150 people and they can be out of your follower list too.

When you send the invite, the other person will be notified. These people in your Twitter Circle cannot retweet, quote tweet or share your posts but can screengrab and save the thing.

Finally, here is how you can add people to your Twitter Circle:

Twitter Circle

Open the Twitter app and then tap on the Plus icon to compose a Tweet. Type the tweet and add the required images and other details.  Above the tweet, you’ll see an ‘Everyone’ drop-down option. Click on it and select the Twitter Circle option. You can edit the Twitter Circle members from here.

Twitter Circle

Once that’s selected, you will see a tiny text intimation saying, “Only your Twitter Circle can view and reply”. You also get to edit the list of Twitter Circle members after the Tweet is live.

That’s about it. So, have a fun and wholesome interaction with your close friends on Twitter.

Apple Could Finally Reveal Long-Missing iPhone Feature On iOS 16 At WWDC 2022

iOS 16 could be a significant update compared to its predecessor. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has forecasted some major feature predictions for the upcoming iOS release in WWDC 2022. This includes lock screen improvements, Always-on Display (AoD), and new social networking-like features in the Apple Messages app, among various other things.

He has shared his prognosis for other Apple software, products, and services also. Let’s take a look.

iOS 16 Features (Expected)

iOS 16

1. Always-on Display

As per Mark Gurman, the Always-on Screen feature could be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and possibly future iPhone Pro variants. Nevertheless, this could be a minimal and quick-glanceable presentation of key phone information like time, date, notifications, missed calls, etc without lighting up the entire screen like the regular lock screen. Even the screen refresh rate may be reduced in this view.

2. Lock screen

The iOS 16 lock screen could finally get support for interactive widgets so you don’t have to unlock and go into the home screen or the widget gallery. This may also feature a new wallpaper format but Gurman hasn’t elaborated on this.

3. Messages getting Social-media-type features

“In Messages, I’d expect more social network-like functionality, particularly around audio messages,” says Gurman in his newsletter Power On.

Could this be something like a Clubhouse-esque experience?

iOS 16

We will know in a matter of days. iOS 16 is likely to be announced at WWDC 2022, starting June 6. Alongside the iPhone software, we are also expecting better windowing and multitasking on iPadOS, revamped apps and System Preferences interface in macOS, low power mode, more watch faces, and navigational improvements in watchOS, and better ecosystem integrations in tvOS, and perhaps some hardware.

Microsoft Store is the big winner of the Build 2022 developer conference

Microsoft Build 2022 is underway. It started off on May 24 and goes on till May 26, 2022. For the third consecutive year, the developer event is free and online. Here we will go through the key announcements made by the Redmond-based company and guess what, the Windows store is the big winner. It is being made more useful by opening it up to Win32 apps sans a waitlist. So that means more options for the end-user and making things easier for the user is the new app restoration facility.

Microsoft Build 2022 Announcements

Microsoft Build 2022

Microsoft is working on an automatic app restoration option in the Windows store. This could be similar to app stores on other platforms. Now, the only catch could be that this will work with apps that are present in the store. It shouldn’t be a problem with apps like Canva, Epic Games, Firefox, Zoom, Audacity, and OpenOffice. So, if you use apps downloaded from external sources, don’t expect this to work.

Windows Store

This means the Microsoft store needs to have more apps. Even many of the popular apps aren’t available on it. Probably to fix this, the company is getting rid of the waitlist for submitting Win32 as well as PWA apps to the store.

Microsoft Windows Store

Besides these two additions, Microsoft has also revealed that it will be showing ads in the Microsoft Store and app listings on Windows Search.

Heres how you can download Microsoft Windows 11 update without an official notification

Mircosoft Windows 11 update is finally available and interested users can upgrade their Windows 10 PC/laptop to Windows 11. As per Microsoft, users should not download the Windows 11 update if their PC/laptop does not meet the minimum eligibility requirements. If they do so anyway, their devices will not receive future Windows 11 software and security updates.

For all the eligible devices, there are two main methods to download the Windows 11 software update. The first method is most suitable if you have a laptop or a pre-built PC.

Windows 11 update download official

Windows 11 Update Download (Update and Security) Click on the start button and open the “Settings” menu Once inside, select “Update & Security” and click on the “Windows Update” tab Click on the “Check for updates” button and wait for the system to respond

Your laptop will most likely get the Windows 11 update option if your OEM has sent over an official notification. However, if you can’t see any Windows 11 update download prompt, you can download it update directly from Microsoft’s official website.

Windows 11 Update Download (Online method) Download and install the “PC Health Check” by clicking here Open the PC health check app click on the “Check Now” button After receiving a go-ahead from the app the next step is to download Windows 11 Open Google Chrome and type in the search box “Windows 11 official download”  A search result titled “ Download Windows 11” will appear, click on it Once the page loads, under the heading “Windows 11 Installation Assistant” click on “Download Now” Open the downloaded installer on your PC It’ll prompt you to Use the PC Health Check app, ignore it and press refresh if you’ve already finished this process. The next step is to accept the license agreement and install Windows 11 by clicking on “Accept and Install”

With these two steps, you’ll get Windows 11 installed on your PC/Laptop in no time. I installed the Windows 11 OS on my Lenovo Legion 5 Pro and the Dell 9520 laptop using the online method. On both laptops, the new Windows 11 OS is running without any major issues. Few Google Chrome extensions in my web browser are not working properly but other than that, the update is free of bugs.

The Fujifilm GFX50S II Medium Format Mirrorless Camera launched in India at Rs 3,79,999

The Full Frame camera segment has dominated the Indian professional camera market for decades now. But on October 6th, 2021, Fujifilm launched the GFX50S II in India which might pull some of the Full Frame fanatics to it, thanks to a larger than Full Frame (Medium Format) sensor and a price that rivals some of the cameras in the Full-Frame mirrorless segment  (like the Canon EOS R3, Sony Alpha 1, etc). Fujifilm also launched the Fujinon GF35-70mm f/4.5 -5.6 WR lens along with the Fujifilm GFX50S II Body. The price of the GFX50S II is Rs 3,79,999 for the body only and with the Fujinon GF35-70, the total price is Rs 4,49,999.

Fujifilm GFX50S II specifications

The Fujifilm GFX50S II features a whopping 51.4 Megapixel Medium Format sensor.  And as most professionals would already know, having a larger sensor has a ton of benefits. The larger sensor size results in a larger area that receives light per pixel. The end result of which is better low light performance, excellent ISO sensitivity and improved dynamic range. An added benefit is the ability to produce a shallower depth of field when compared to the popular Full Frame cameras. Meaning more creamy bokeh.

Fujifilm GFX 50S II Body and Lens combo

Fujifilm is also known for its superb Film Simulations and the GFX50S II features 19 of them. Including one called “Nostalgic Neg” which has been developed specifically for the GFX50S II.

Like most other mirrorless cameras, the GFX50S II comes with a 5-axis in-body image stabilisation mechanism (IBIS) that provides 6.5 stops of stabilisation. Promising better image quality with handheld photography or video. Considering the large sensor in a compact body, this feature is one of the highlights of the camera. Basically, for those who don't know, the GFX 50S II is the smaller, more compact version of the massive professional bodied Fujifilm GFX100.

Handling the processing duties is the X-Processor 4 processing engine that enables improved Auto Focus refresh rate which results in more accurate Face and Eye detection when compared to other Fujifilm Cameras.

Other features include six customisable positions on the Mode dial, a 3.2-inch tilting main LCD monitor with 100% coverage, a 1.8-inch sub LCD monitor on the top panel, a weather-sealed body and the capability to click 200 Megapixel images free of any false colour representation thanks to the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function.

The Fujifilm GFX50S II will available in two variants. As a Body only version and one with the Fujinon GF35-70 f/4.5-5.6 WR Lens included. It will be available for purchase at all Fujifilm authorised dealers across India.

Android 12 will allow users to play a game while it downloads

Android 12 will enable users to start playing a game while it downloads on their smartphones. The new feature was announced at Google for Games Developer Summit 2021. The new feature is especially useful for games with a large download size, such as those between 2GB to 5GB. Users can now start playing such large titles as they download in the background.

Android 12 fast game download feature

Android 12 brings new features for games

Google's Android 12 will use a feature called “Play Asset Delivery,” which allows game developers with a game larger than 150MB to publish a single artifact with all the necessary resources to start it. In other words, it breaks the game into multiple playable chunks, which users can easily download and start playing, while the rest of the game installs in the background.

In their presentation, Google demonstrated that a 127MB game became available to play twice as fast on Android 12 as compared to 11. It should be noted that game consoles like the PlayStation and Xbox already have such a feature in which you can start playing a game once a certain amount of it downloads in your storage.

Additionally, Android 12 will also launch with a brand new gaming-focused dashboard featuring quick access to features like screenshots, recording, etc. The Android 12 gaming dashboard will launch on "select" devices later this year. OEMs like ASUS, OnePlus and others that make performance-oriented smartphones already offer some form of a gaming dashboard. With Android 12 though, this feature will become universal.

Gaming on Android is picking up “steam” as several PC-focused developers continue to launch versions of their games on smartphones. Following the success of miHoYo developed, Genshin Impact, Sandbox Interactive also launched Albion Online on Android smartphones. Games from other notable titles like League of Legends, Diablo, and Apex Legends are also set to make their debut on smartphones.
