Indian Twitter rival Koo plans to go global, wants to hire employees fired by Elon Musk

Recently, Twitter has reduced its workforce to less than half of what it was before Musk walked into the headquarters. Reports suggest that half of the employees, including the then CEO Parag Agrawal, were fired by Musk and the core management, while a majority of the remaining are walking out voluntarily as the company is forcing a hardcore work environment.

Koo welcomes ex-Twitter employees

It is apparent that the tech mogul is desperate to cut Twitter's costs and maximize revenue, a part of which is the new Twitter Blue subscription that costs $7.99 a month. However, the employees that have been fired might have a golden opportunity in front of them as the Indian microblogging platform Koo wants to hire ex-Twitter employees, per a report.

While the world remains divided on how Musk is petting his new bird, rival platform Koo has been taking advantage of the situation. In an attempt to lure frustrated Twitter users, Koo is adding several features to its app, making it a suitable alternative for anyone who wants to use a platform like Twitter, but not Twitter.

However, the platform needs more engineers who can manage everything to accommodate more users and provide more features. Turns out, Mayank Bidawatka, the co-founder of the Indian microblogging platform, is looking to hire ex-Twitter employees fired by Musk.

The platform wants to expand globally

Through his official Twitter account, Bidawatka recently announced that Koo would hire some of the Twitter ex-employees. He says that "they [the fired employees] deserve to work where their talent is valued. Microblogging is about people's power. Not suppression."

Earlier this month, the CEO of the platform, Aprameya Radhakrishna, confirmed that Koo would launch in the United States soon. In addition, the ambitious platform also wants to roll out in other regions, including Africa, the Middle East, the Philippines and Bangladesh.

WhatsApp is testing a new Camera Mode with dedicated buttons for photo and video: Report

The Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is working on a new Camera Mode to help users quickly record videos. Currently, users have to press and hold the shutter button to record a video. However, that could change soon as the feature found in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android makes it to a stable update. Recently, the app has been working on several new features, including a dedicated version for Android tablets, profile photos within groups and more. Let's talk about the new Camera Mode that has been spotted by WhatsApp updates tracker WABetaInfo.

New camera mode brings separate buttons for shooting photo and video

As per a report published on November 16, 2022, WhatsApp is testing a new Camera Mode in beta for Android v2.22.24.21. Apparently, the new Camera Mode redesigns how the WhatsApp camera interface looks. For instance, it will bring new icons and a dedicated photo/video mode, like the default camera app on users' smartphones. The report mentions that the new design will enable users to switch from photo to video mode easily, but wasn't that the case with WhatsApp?

To take a picture, WhatsApp users have to tap the shutter button once, while to shoot a video, they need to tap and hold the shutter button. Although the dedicated photo and video modes eliminate the need to hold the shutter button, almost all popular apps, including Instagram and Snapchat, follow a similar approach of tap for picture and hold for video.

Nevertheless, the new Camera Mode is available to a limited number of beta testers. However, the report mentions that WhatsApp will release the feature to more users soon.

New DoT rule for Jio, Airtel, VI, and other telecom operators aimed at countering SIM swap fraud: Know details

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has come up with a new SMS rule that could mitigate a prevailing SIM swap fraud in the market. Let’s learn what this SIM fraud is and how the new DoT rule will cripple that.

New SIM rule to counter SIM swap fraud: What is being mandated?

Once the telecom operator gets a request to change a SIM number, they will have to intimate the customer about receiving the said request.

Then the customer has to confirm the request via an IVRS call. This is to ensure it’s been initiated by the authorized holder or owner of the SIM.

Now, if you fail to prove the same or the request gets rejected by the customer, the telecom operator will have to stop the SIM upgrade process right away.

This new process is set in motion to prevent nefarious actors from gaining access to your mobile number and OTP. In case you’re wondering how? Please read on.

SIM swap fraud: How is it carried out?

As you know mobile numbers are used for double-factor authentication. You receive OTPs for several data-sensitive transactions. And if somebody gets access to your mobile number and therefore the OTPs that you receive on it, then that can be a grave issue.

Apparently, scammers have been duping telecom brands by requesting duplicate SIMs for mobile numbers whose owners would be somebody else altogether. When they get a duplicate SIM card, they use that unauthorized access to take out funds in the account or perform other fraudulent activities.

Let’s hope this new SIM rule puts an end to this.

Airtel launches 5G Plus services at the new terminal of Kempegowda airport in Bengaluru

The new terminal of Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, has become the second airport in India to get access to 5G services. The telecom service provider Bharti Airtel has launched its 5G Plus services at the terminal yet to be inaugurated, as per a report by 91Mobiles.

People can access 5G Plus at the new Bengaluru Airport

The report mentions that people with supported devices, people can access 5G Plus services at the arrival and departure terminals, lounges, boarding gates, and migration and immigration areas. Airtel has previously informed users that there is no need to change their 4G SIM to get 5G Plus services, as the SIM is already 5G-enabled.

Announcing the 5G Plus services at the Bengaluru airport, Airtel's CTO, Randeep Sekhon, says, "I am thrilled to announce the launch of Airtel 5G Plus in the new terminal at BLR Airport." Adding to it, Sekhon says, "passengers flying in and out of Bengaluru will not only witness the most modern and contemporary airport but will also get to experience the cutting-edge Airtel 5G Plus service."

Bharti Airtel provides 5G in eight cities in India

Currently, Airtel offers its 5G services in eight cities in the country, including the capital Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Siliguri, Nagpur, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. However, having a 5G-enabled device is not sufficient as the manufacturer should also provide support for 5G services, which is why iPhones and certain Samsung smartphones are not able to access 5G services at the moment.

Instagram will soon allow users to mint and sell NFTs

Instagram has announced that they are testing a new feature with digital collectibles that will allow users to share NFTs that they have created or bought directly from the social media app. There will be no fees associated for sharing an NFT on Instagram. Here is everything you need to know about this update!

What are NFTs?

NFTs, also known as non-fungible token are a digital asset that represents real-world objects like art, music, in-game items and videos. It is “minted” from digital objects that represent both tangible and intangible items. It is generally built using the same kind of programming like Bitcoin, Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies.

While anyone on the internet can take a look at an NFT, or even click a screenshot to save it, an NFTs allows the buyer to own the original item. Not only that, it contains built-in authentication, which serves as proof of ownership. In simple words, NFTs are like collector’s items, but unlike physical items, they’re digital only.

How do NFTs work on Instagram?

Users will be able to share NFTs on Instagram that they have created or bought from their Digital Wallet. So, after their digital wallet is connected to Instagram, users will have the ability to choose which NFTs from their wallet they would like to share on Instagram. The NFT will be available in the post section on their profile.

While creators can share NFTs on Instagram for free, other people on Instagram will be able to buy the NFTs directly within the app itself. This will be done through in-app purchases on both iOS and Android.

As of now, Instagram is not taking a cut of the creators’ revenues. The company has also confirmed that “We’re testing these new features with a small group of creators in the US first, and hope to expand to more countries soon.”

Twitter introduces new look for its icons

San Francisco, Oct 22 (IANS) The microblogging site Twitter has announced it is introducing a new look for its icons used across the social network.

The company's "Twitter Design" account tweeted two tweets from the thread so that people could see what's changed.

In the first thread, users can see how they looked before and now, while in the second one, users can see a bunch of them together.

"The goal was to create a cohesive set of icons that are bold in shape and style yet still relatable and a little cheeky where possible," Twitter said.

The modifications are in line with the company's new visual design language, which it unveiled in August 2021 and includes the use of its Chirp font throughout the app, according to the report.

"Twitter will be making the new icons available to everyone on the web, iOS, and Android "over the coming days," a company spokesperson was quoted as saying.

In August 2021, the platform launched a new visual design language to provide a streamlined, modern backdrop for future design and product changes at Twitter.

"Following this launch, we kicked off a new iconographic set to continue the visual evolution based on a core set of principles we developed," the company said.

Meanwhile, Twitter is working on a new feature that will allow user to control who can mention them in their tweets, not letting anyone tag or mention your Twitter handle with their posts unless you want them to.

Apple Watch helps detect rare cancer in 12-yr-old girl

San Francisco, Oct 22 (IANS) An Apple Watch has reportedly been credited with spotting a 12-year-old girl's rare cancer before she was even aware of it, with the help of its heart rate notifications feature.

As reported by Hour Detroit, Imani Miles and her mother Jessica Kitchen now view the Apple Watch as more than just a gadget.

Imani's mother, Jessica, noticed that her daughter's Apple Watch started beeping constantly, alerting Imani to an abnormally high heart rate.

"That's really weird because it's never happened before. It just kept going off," said the mother.

The concerned mother took her daughter to the hospital, where doctors noticed a tumour in her appendix.

It was then that they learned of a "neuroendocrine tumour" on her appendix, which according to doctors, is "rarely seen in children", the report added.

When doctors found Imani's tumour, it had already spread to other parts of her body, requiring her to undergo surgery to remove it.

"If the watch didn't go off, I probably would have just waited and taken her in the next couple of days," Kitchen was quoted as saying.

"If she didn't have that watch, it could have been so much worse," she added.

Imani had surgery at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in the US to remove the remaining tumour, according to the report.

Earlier this month, Apple Watch detected a 34-year-old woman's pregnancy.

The woman on Reddit posted that the watch indicated that her average resting heart rate had significantly increased in just a few days, which made her suspect that something was off.

In July, a woman's heart was detected with a rare tumour after she received multiple alerts that her heart was in atrial fibrillation.

Google disables online translation service in mainland China

San Francisco, Oct 1 (IANS) Google has disabled its online translation service in mainland China owing to "low usage", and redirected people to the Hong Kong domain which isn't accessible for users from within the country.

Several users reported on Reddit and other social media platforms that Google China Translate service became inaccessible, hampering their work.

"Today, at least 10 hours ago, translate.google.cn became inaccessible, I found this based on an automated test accessing it failing. It redirects to a normal Google search. translate.google.hk still accessible," one user posted on Reddit late on Friday.

A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company has discontinued Google Translate in mainland China "due to low usage".

Another affected user posted: "Yes. Google is shutting down translate CN. It will redirect to the HK site permanently."

Earlier, Google had terminated its controversial China search engine project, named Dragonfly.

The controversial Chinese search engine raised privacy, censorship, and human rights concerns.

Google's offices in the US, UK, Canada, India, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Sweden, Switzerland, and Denmark witnessed protests by human rights groups over its plan to re-enter China through "Project Dragonfly".

The search engine giant had launched a search engine in China in 2006 but pulled the service out of the country in 2010, citing Chinese government efforts to limit free speech and block websites.

Twitter finally fixes bug that exposed at least 54 lakh accounts

New Delhi, Aug 6 (IANS) Twitter has fixed a security bug that exposed data of at least 54 lakh accounts on its platform that were put up for sale on the Dark Web.

Twitter said that if you operate a pseudonymous Twitter account, "we understand the risks an incident like this can introduce and deeply regret that this happened".

"To keep your identity as veiled as possible, we recommend not adding a publicly known phone number or email address to your Twitter account," the company said in a statement late on Friday.

The company said that while no passwords were exposed, "we encourage everyone who uses Twitter to enable two-factor authentication using authentication apps or hardware security keys to protect your account from unauthorized logins".

The vulnerability allowed bad actors to enter a phone number or email address into the log-in flow in the attempt to learn if that information was tied to an existing Twitter account, and if so, which specific account.

"We take our responsibility to protect your privacy very seriously and it is unfortunate that this happened," said Twitter.

Twitter in January received a report through its bug bounty programme of a vulnerability in its systems.

"As a result of the vulnerability, if someone submitted an email address or phone number to Twitter's systems, Twitter's systems would tell the person what Twitter account the submitted email addresses or phone number was associated with, if any," said the company.

In July, Twitter learned that someone had potentially leveraged this (bug) and was offering to sell the information they had compiled.

"After reviewing a sample of the available data for sale, we confirmed that a bad actor had taken advantage of the issue before it was addressed," said Twitter.

The company also directly notified the account owners who were affected by this issue.

Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro May Launch On October 6: But What About India

The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are all set to launch later this year and today a popular tipster has shed some light on the launch details of both these phones. Google teased the Pixel 7 series during its Google I/O 2022 presentation alongside the Pixel 6a. The Pixel 6a (review) was recently launched in India priced at Rs 43,999 and is powered by the Tensor chip featuring a 6.1-inch OLED display, dual rear cameras and more.

According to a report by Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will launch on October 6 in the US and will go up for pre-orders on the same day. As per the report, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will go on sale from October 13 in the US. While we will advise our readers to take this with a pinch of salt, Prosser has been accurate in the past with his leaks on the Pixel 6 series launch details.

Google Pixel 7

Google revealed the design of the rear panel of the upcoming Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro but that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from dishing out some of the specs of the upcoming Pixel phones. As per the leaks, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro could be powered by the second-generation 4nm Tensor processor and will likely run on Android 13 out-of-the-box.

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are also rumoured to get a 50MP camera that uses Samsung’s GN1 sensor. As per the teaser, the Pixel 7 has dual cameras on the back while the Pixel 7 Pro has three cameras on the rear, just like the Pixel 6 lineup.

We’ll know more about the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro launch as we near the expected release date. Though, there’s no word on Google’s plans to launch the Pixel 7 series in India anytime soon.

iPhone 14 And iPhone 14 Pro Will Have Different OLED Panels, Claims Report

Tech giant Apple is planning to use different OLED panel grades for the upcoming iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, media reports claim.

According to TheElec, Samsung Display will be applying different grades of materials on the OLED panels it will manufacture for the upcoming iPhone 14 series depending on the model tiers.

iPhone 14 to sport different OLED panels

It will use its latest and most advanced material set for the higher tier iPhone 14 models, while it will use its prior generation set for the lower tier ones. The move is being made to save costs.

Samsung Display will be supplying OLED panels for all four models of the iPhone 14 series; rival LG Display will be supplying for two models, citing sources, the report said.

Also Read: iPhone 14’s expected launch date, price in India, and more

An OLED material set comprises dopant, host, prime and others used to form the red, green and blue pixels.

Apple iPhone 14

iPhone 14 concept renders | Image source: Jon Prosser

Samsung Display calls its material sets used on Samsung's Galaxy and Apple's iPhones the M series.

The South Korean display maker used its LT sets in 2017 for Apple's first OLED iPhone, the iPhone X and in 2018 iPhone XS. But starting in 2019 it began using its M series for panels supplied for Galaxy smartphones and iPhones.

Samsung’s OLED panels will feature on iPhone 14 series

Samsung Display will use its M11 material set for the standard 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch models in the iPhone 14 series.

These phones will have low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED panels, which are less advanced than the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) TFT OLED panels used in the higher-tier models.

The two higher-tier models in the iPhone 14 series will use Samsung Display's M12 material set.

This same OLED material set is being used for the OLED panels on Samsung's upcoming foldable phones Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Jio Is Ready To Roll Out Pan-India 5G: Here Is What You Need To Know

In the 7-day 5G auction, Reliance Jio came on top with a ₹88,078 investment and the acquisition of nearly half of all the available airwaves. And as you’d expect, the company has come forward with an announcement that it is going to launch the pan-India 5G rollout soon. It might kick off the works on Independence Day.

Jio’s Pan-India 5G Auction Announcement

io

The newly appointed chairman of the company, Mr. Akash Ambani has said, "We will celebrate ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ with a pan India 5G rollout. Jio is committed to offering world-class, affordable 5G and 5G-enabled services."

Jio envisions its 5G services will contribute to the country’s growth in “sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and e-Governance”.

It believes it can do so thanks to its deep fiber network, and the recently acquired “combination of low-band, mid-band, and mmWave spectrum”.

Meanwhile, its competitors like Airtel and Vi are yet to reveal their plans.

Jio Airtel Vi

Airtel has acquired 19,867.8 MHz of airwaves for ₹43,084 crores and Vodafone Idea (Vi) has put in ₹18,799 crores to grab a 6,228 MHz share of the bandwidth.

Not only those two but there is also a new player in the game — Adani Data Networks (Adani Group) which has put in ₹212 crore for 400 MHz of spectrum.  It, however, has said this is meant for private needs and not for competing in the consumer mobility space.

So, in total 4 companies spent about 1.5 trillion rupees for 20-year 5G licenses and in the process have acquired about 71% of the offered 72 GHz airwaves.

Indias 5G Spectrum Auction: Bids Top Over 1,50,000 Crore In Just Six Days

Day 6 of the ongoing 5G spectrum auction on Sunday saw an incremental increase in the bidding figure after 37 rounds, with the government now receiving bids worth Rs 1,50,130 crore to date.

Led by Reliance Jio with over Rs 80,100 crore and Bharati Airtel with around Rs 50,000 crore worth bids, the 5G spectrum auction will continue on Monday.

India 5G Spectrum Explained: Why 700MHz Band Matters For Best 5G Coverage

While Vodafone Idea has placed bids for about Rs 15,000 crore, a unit of Adani Enterprises has placed bids around Rs 5,000 crore.

5G

Jio and Airtel are currently engaged in intense bidding in Uttar Pradesh East circle for the 1800MHz band.

Earlier, addressing the 'Telecom Investors Roundtable' in Mumbai, Vaishnaw had said that there is no upfront payment and the winning telecom companies can pay the money over a period of 20 years.

Day 3 Of 5G Spectrum Auction Begins, Commercial 5G Rollout In India Now Closer Than Ever

In all, 72 GHz (gigahertz) of radiowaves worth at least Rs 4.3 lakh crore on the block. More than 71 per cent of the total 5G spectrum put on the block has been provisionally sold. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expects 5G rollout by October this year.

In 2015, the telecom spectrum auction fetched Rs 1.10 lakh crore for the government. 5G, which can provide data speeds about 10 times faster than 4G, would enable better e-health, connected vehicles, AR/metaverse and mobile gaming/streaming.

The ongoing 5G spectrum auction indicates that the country's telecom industry has come a long way in 5G advancements, said Mr. Vaishnaw. The industry has emerged to become a sunrise industry in India and a benchmark for the world, the minister added.

BSNL And BBNL Merger Sanctioned Along With A 164 Lakh Crore Revival Package

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) was once a successful venture, but lately, it has been marred with poor management, lack of even a 4G network, and cut-throat competition from other telecom companies. Yes, while other telecom companies in India and the world are working their way towards a 5G future, BSNL is still to start its 4G service. So, all in all, one could surmise it’s rough times for the PSU. But, things may change now as the government has intervened. A 1.64 lakh crore would be injected into the BSNL revival plan.

Here is what you need to know about this newly approved lifeline for BSNL.

BSNL Revival Plan

BSNL

At a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the BSNL revival plan was authorized. Here’s what that primarily entails:

₹1,64,156 crore support package will be allotted to BSNL. Spectrum allotment for high-speed data (possibly speaking of 4G) BSNL and BBNL merger.

In another important decision, the Union Cabinet chaired by PM Shri @narendramodi Ji approved the revival package of BSNL amounting to ₹1.64 Lakh crores. This will help BSNL to improve the quality of their existing services, roll out 4G services and become financially viable.

— Amit Shah (@AmitShah) July 27, 2022

Other help in terms of raising capital, due settlement, and funding requirements. All this falls in line with the Antyodaya scheme of the government that aims for optimum resource management and utilization.

BSNL

As for the government, this could benefit in things and ways like:

Rural broadband expansion Promote Make In India with BSNL and its surrounding vendor ecosystem.  To keep afloat a company that is deeply rooted in several regions across the country.

BSNL

Now, what’s left to see is how the whole plan actually pans out. We’ll be keeping close tabs.

Thank you Pradhan mantri ji, for supporting BSNL wholeheartedly with the financial package to promote Aatmnirbhar Bharat. @PMOIndia #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav #AtmanirbharBharat

India Intends To Regulate Social Media: Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Social Media is the voice of the masses and thus plays a powerful role in shaping the public discourse. We often come across instances of how social media is toxic for teenagers, degrades mental health, and can even upend civil and democratic systems. This must be why the Indian government wants to rein it in. Recently, while speaking at a program, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared his views on the power and influence of social media on public lives and hinted at what the government plans.

Indian Social Media Regulation

Social Media

"Social media is a very powerful medium. Social media has a big influence on our lives. How to make it accountable has become a very valid question across the globe. All across the globe, countries, and societies are moving in the direction of making social media accountable," said Mr. Vaishnaw.

He adds that self-regulation is the first step. That is social media companies have the onus on them to ensure the quality and civility of content on their platforms. He said, “Any such content that creates a harmful impact on society should be removed. Next comes industry regulation, and thereafter the government regulation".

Social Media

The benefit of the social media creators will be kept front and center. According to him, in a fair system, the creator gets the due share for his/her efforts.

He emphasizes that “works are being done apace on these issues across the globe,” and so our government too could be cooking up something for the social media content regulation.

BSNL Launches Two New Prepaid Plans Check Out Whats On Offer

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, popularly known as BSNL, has launched two new prepaid plans in a bid to expand its offerings and cater to a wider audience. Priced at ₹228 and ₹239, these plans come with a validity of 30 days. These plans will be in effect starting today, July 1, 2022.

BSNL, in its current prepaid portfolio, has unlimited data plans offering up to 5 GB of data every day with a validity of 84 days. On the lower end of the pricing spectrum, the offerings above ten days of validity come with at least 1 GB of daily data balance. These two new plans are set to slot in right between these two pricing extremes.

BSNL’s new plans have a full month’s validity

The ₹228 plan will offer 2 GB of daily data and 100 SMSes daily. This plan will have unlimited voice calling and will come bundled with Challenges Arena Mobile Gaming Service on the Progressive Web App. After the daily data limit has been reached, the internet browsing speeds will be capped at 80 Kbps.

When it comes to the more expensive ₹239 plan, the offering includes the benefits that are included in the ₹228 plan. There is a daily data allowance of 2 GB and everything else that is being offered in the cheaper plan. The only difference is that this plan will include an additional ₹ ten talk time. Some people might flock to this more expensive offering because the plan offers the extra talk time, which might come in handy in certain cases where free voice and SMSes do not come in clutch.

The other thing about these plans that might draw customers towards them is that they have a full month’s validity. This means that if you recharge on the 15th of a month, then the next recharge will need to be done on the same day of the next month.
