Amazon launches new Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Stick Lite starting at Rs 2,999 in India

Amazon has updated one of its most popular products, the Fire TV stick and also introduced a new entry-level Fire TV Stick called the Fire TV Stick Lite. While both of them perform the same function, there are a few key differences one should be aware of. The Fire TV Stick is priced at Rs 3,999 while the Fire TV Stick Lite is priced at Rs 2,999. Let’s dive in and see what each device has to offer.

New Amazon Fire TV Stick

When it comes to the design, the new Fire TV Stick is indistinguishable from the old one. However, the improvements it brings with it are under the hood. The all-new Fire TV Stick features an enhanced 1.7 GHz quad-core processor that Amazon claims makes it 50 percent more powerful than the previous generation. The new Fire TV Stick can output 1080p at 60fps with HDR compatibility. HDR is new as the previous-gen 1080p Fire TV Stick couldn’t output in HDR. Previously, if you wanted HDR you would have to invest in the Fire TV Stick 4K.

The new Fire TV Stick also supports dual-band Wi-Fi. The New Fire TV Stick also supports Dolby Atmos. If you have a 1080p TV and Dolby Atmos enabled home theatre or soundbar, then this can be a great smart stick for you. A lot of home theatres today still have a 1080p projector hooked up to a soundbar or home theatre with Dolby Atmos support. Once again, it looks like this could be the go-to device for such setups as it does fulfil the need and is cheaper than the 4K Fire TV Stick.

Speaking of the remote control, the Fire TV Stick comes with the same remote control we’ve grown to love. It has a button to bring up Alexa and also has a power button that can be used to switch on/off your TV and soundbar. It also has a volume rocker along with a mute button.

Fire TV Stick Lite

Amazon says that the Fire TV Stick Lite is 50 percent more powerful than the previous-generation Fire TV Stick. It features HDR support and comes with Alexa Voice Remote Lite, a new remote that allows you to use voice to find, launch, and control content. This remote lacks the ability to switch on/off your TV and does not come with volume controls either. The Fire TV Stick Lite does not support Dolby Atmos. Instead of the volume rocker and mute button, the Fire TV Stick Lite remote control comes with a new guide button.

Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite price and availability.

The Fire TV Stick is priced at Rs 3,999 and the Fire TV Stick is priced at Rs 2,999. Both devices are up for pre-order and will be available starting October 15 in India.

“Millions of Fire TV customers in India will now experience an even better and faster streaming experience with this launch. TV at home has become the mainstay for movies, shows, kids’ entertainment and latest news during these uncertain times. Customers can now get the most out of their TVs with the next-generation Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite. It offers a more powerful and affordable streaming experience with better voice integration with Alexa,” said Parag Gupta, Head of Amazon Devices, India.

To put things into perspective, we have the Nokia Media streamer priced at Rs 3,199 and that supports FHD and not HDR. You can learn more about it here. We also have the Mi TV Stick priced at Rs 2,799 which supports 1080p playback and does not support HDR. You can learn more about it here.

OnePlus 8T is now confirmed to feature Warp Charge 65 fast charging technology when it launches on October 14 in India. The OnePlus 8T is slated to be the first phone in the company’s arsenal to support 65W fast charging that is capable of recharging the phone relatively faster than any other OnePlus phone in the market. OnePlus has been revealing key features of the upcoming OnePlus 8T in the heads up to the launch which is scheduled to begin from 7:30 PM IST on October 14.

According to a post on OnePlus Forums, Warp Charge 65 will fully charge the OnePlus 8T in 39 minutes and is capable of charging it up to 58% in 15 minutes tops. Moreover, the company also confirmed that the OnePlus 8T is equipped with a 4,500mAh battery, corroborating earlier leaks and rumours.

OnePlus 8T confirmed to launch with 65W fast charging

OnePlus 8T uses a dual-cell battery technology that charges two separate cells at more than 30W simultaneously while keeping the thermals in check. A drawback of fast battery charging is the amount of heat generated and the methods deployed to counter it. OnePlus 8T is fitted with a new heat dissipation system and the company has added an encryption chip to the charging adapter along with 12 temperature sensors in the phone to keep the device running cool even when charging at 65W.

PUBG Mobile ban in India permanent for now: Report

PUBG Mobile could remain permanently banned in India as the government of India isn’t revoking the ban on any of the 119 apps restricted by it on September 2. As per the latest report, there isn’t any discussion within the government on revoking the ban on any of the restricted apps anytime soon. PUBG Mobile, one of the most popular mobile games was banned by the government over their alleged engagement in “activities” that were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order."

According to a report by InsideSport citing a “ministry source”, the government of India ,“ is in no discussion with-in the ministry officially to revoke the ban on any of the apps listed in the ban list.” PUBG Mobile severed ties with Tencent Games in India after the game was taken down from Google Play Store and Apple App Store. As per the report, the government has taken cognizance of the Corporation severing its ties but has said that a “mere announcement” isn’t enough to be considered for revocation of the ban in effect on PUBG Mobile.

PUBG Mobile could remain banned in India permanently

Since its ban, there have been several rumours regarding PUBG Corporation looking for an Indian publisher for the popular battle royale title in India. However, the latest information does seem to indicate that it is going to be a long wait for PUBG Mobile players in India, at least until PUBG Corp gets a publisher on board.

Another report from The Hindu Business Line citing “sources in the know”, PUBG Corp. could collaborate with Jio Platforms to distribute PUBG Mobile in India. Reliance Jio is reportedly already in talks with PUBG Corp to take over the Indian licensing for publishing the popular battle royale game. Having said that, there’s no official word from either of the companies for a possible collaboration yet.

PUBG Mobile has over 50 million active players in India and had also become a source of revenue for several upcoming Indian streamers who have amassed a large following on YouTube and other social media platforms. All of that has come to a pause since the ban is in effect with players trying their hands on other games like Call of Duty Mobile, Clash of Clans, Among Us, FreeFire, to name a few.

It is currently not known when the ban on PUBG Mobile in India could be lifted and the latest information coming in from the government doesn’t seem very hopeful for PUBG Mobile players and fans in India.

Shout into Twitter DMs with new voice message feature

Apparently Twitter now knows how much people like Voice Messages. The company is  about to introduce Voice DM’s just shortly after their roll out of audio tweets in June which allowed users to include their own voice in Tweets. The company was quoted saying “Sometimes 280 characters aren’t enough and some conversational nuances are lost in translation. So starting today, we’re testing a new feature that will add a more human touch to the way we use Twitter — your very own voice”

Voice DM’s on Twitter seemed like the next logical step. Alex Ackerman-Greenberg who is product manager for DMs at Twitter said the company is going to test voice DMs soon to The Verge. This will allow users to share voice messages in DM’s and is almost in the final stages of development. Twitter has said that they will start testing the service in Brazil soon.

voice messages on twitter DMs

Here we have a screenshot shared with the Verge from Alex Ackerman-Greenberg, which shows a sneak-peak into the interface which only has a play/pause button with a timer, showing the length of the voice message.

“We know people want more options for how they express themselves in conversations on Twitter — both publicly and privately,” he was quoted as saying in the report.

For the time being voice DM’s are currently capped at 140-seconds. To recall, Twitter originally had a 140-character limit for tweets, which was later increased to 280-characters.

While audio messages are relatively new ground for Twitter, it's a feature you can find in many other apps. Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp have supported voice messages for some time now.

As Twitter pointed out when it started testing audio tweets on iOS, voice messages add a “more human touch” to the way people use a chat platform. So it’s not a surprise to see the company willing to experiment with the format for DMs.
