Gmail now natively supports package tracking: Heres how to use it

Google has added package tracking support on Gmail. The email client can pull tracking number in the email body and use that to track packages automatically. Well, this will work on an opt-in basis. So, once you allow Gmail to track your packages, it will show you updates on package status from shipping carriers. Here’s how that looks in action:

Gmail Package Tracking: How it works

Gmail

As already mentioned, it’s a matter of granting permission to Gmail to scan for the tracking number/code and the Google wizardry will take care of the rest. You will see order statuses right in your inbox.

You can opt-in to it through Gmail settings or grant permissions if the prompt appears on the inbox feed itself. And if you don’t like it, you can opt out of the Gmail Package Tracking whenever you want through the Gmail settings itself.

Gmail

Going forward Gmail will also show delays in shipments, an ability which is missing right now.  Google is going to roll out package tracking feature in the US in the "coming weeks." The availability for other markets is currently unknown. In the US, the feature will be working with leading shipping carriers.

Overall, this new Gmail feature removes the extra step involved in going to a different website and entering details to check the shipment status. It also makes Gmail an even more convenient and capable email client. It is likely to come in handy for the Gmail users during the forthcoming festive shoppings.

YouTube Primetime Channels makes streaming movies and TV easy: Heres how

Streaming services are coming to YouTube. The Google-owned video platform is bringing movie and TV streaming together. The company is rolling out a new Primetime Channels feature to directly get shows and movies from more than 30 services into the YouTube interface. YouTube has signed up 35 partners for the launch, from big-name streaming services like Paramount Plus and Epix to niche offerings like The Great Courses and Magnolia Selects. Interestingly, NBA League Pass is also coming soon on the platform.

Each one will operate like any other YouTube channel, with a curated homepage and videos. Those videos will appear in the Movies and TV section of the YouTube app, in search results, recommendations, and elsewhere around the platform. Users can leave a comment and like or dislike the video. The movies and shows will have only one distinguishing characteristic, a neon green “Watch now” button if you subscribed for a service or “Pay to watch” if you’re not signed up.

YouTube’s new Primetime Channels

YouTube has around two billion people using the service every month, most of them already have a Google account, and many have already connected their credit cards. Therefore, this would be an essential strategy shift for YouTube. In addition, it is a natural fit for YouTube because people spend time watching trailers, recaps, and other content.

Erin Teague, the head of sports, movies, and shows at YouTube and the leader of the Primetime Channels project, “You’ll watch trailers on YouTube and leave YouTube to start from scratch on the streaming service. So we were like, ‘What would happen if we just collapsed that experience and made it convenient to watch all this content in one place?’”

People receiving phishing emails for Twitter verification

San Francisco, Nov 1 (IANS) As microblogging site Twitter plans to charge for account verification, some people have started receiving phishing emails to steal the passwords of unwitting users. According to TechCrunch, the phishing email campaign asks Twitter users to enter their usernames and passwords on an attacker's website masked as a Twitter help form. The email was sent from a Gmail account to several people that were linked to a Google Doc with another link to a Google Site, which lets users host web content. This could make Google's automatic scanning tools more difficult to detect abuse by creating several layers of obfuscation. The page itself contained an embedded frame from another site hosted on the Russian web host Beget that asked for the user's Twitter handle, password, and phone number which was enough to compromise accounts that do not use stronger two-factor authentication, according to the report. Meanwhile, TechCrunch alerted Google about the phishing site and it was taken down shortly afterwards. "Confirming we have taken down the links and accounts in question for violations of our programme policies," a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying. Currently, Twitter has a verification process that requires celebrities and other people of interest to confirm their identities. Additionally, it offers Twitter Blue, a monthly subscription that allows for more service customisation.

Google Drive updates file access expiration capability

San Francisco, Nov 1 (IANS) Google Drive has updated its file access expiration capability that allows users to set an expiration while sharing. When sharing files in My Drive, users can now specify an expiry access period, as opposed to after someone has already accessed the file, the company said in a blog post. Additionally, rather than just for viewers and commenters, users can also add expiring access for the editors. The update makes it simpler to specify when a given collaborator should lose access to a particular file, which increases the security of sharing throughout Google Workspace. This is particularly helpful when a file creator or editor is aware that their work with another person has a deadline. This feature doesn't have administrative control and is not available to users with personal accounts, the company said. Earlier, the tech giant had rolled out a feature that made it easier for users to search files in Google Drive. Called Search chips, the feature was available to all Workspace users, including G Suite Basic and Business users. The feature was first launched in November 2021 as a beta in Google Drive, which made it easier for users to find relevant files faster and eliminated the need to perform multiple searches or sort through irrelevant results.

Google to discontinue Street View app next year

San Francisco, Nov 2 (IANS) Google has announced plans to discontinue its dedicated Street View app on Android next year. According to 9To5Google, the tech giant has prepared a number of shutdown messages for the Street View app. In the notice, the company advises users to move to Google Maps or Street View Studio, as the Street View app will end on March 31, 2023. "Street View App is going away and support will end March 21, 2023," the company was quoted as saying in the report. "To publish your own 360 videos, switch to Street View Studio. To view Street View and add Photo Spheres, use Google Maps." Street View makes it simple to get a 360-degree view of almost any street, making it ideal for researching potential trip destinations or just take a casual tour of the world from the comfort of home, the report said. Earlier, with an aim to enhance user experience, Google Maps had brought back 'Street View' experience to India to help people navigate and explore places more visually and accurately. The Indian government suspended the service more than a decade ago as it failed to secure the required security clearances.
