Top-end iPhone will soon be Made in India: Report

Highlights: Apple may start making its top-end iPhones in India from 2019 These will include phones belonging to the iPhone X family Foxconn is reported to invest Rs 2500 crores to expand its Sriperumbudur plant   Apple is said to begin assembling its top-end iPhones, like the ones which belong to the iPhone X family, in India through the locally established Foxconn unit from 2019, a media report has claimed. This is said to be the first time that the Taiwanese contract manufacturer will make the product in the country, Reuters cited a source familiar with the matter as saying. The source also added that this move could help the Cupertino-based tech company take its “business in India to a new level.” The manufacturing will take place at Foxconn’s plant in Sriperumbudur town in Tamil Nadu. Foxconn, which already manufactures Xiaomi devices in the country, will invest Rs 2500 crores (approx $356 million) to expand the plant, including investment in iPhone production, Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister M C Sampath was quoted as saying. The investment may create as many as 25,000 jobs, he added. Until now, Apple was only assembling the lower-cost iPhone SE and iPhone 6S models in India through Wistron Corp’s unit in the Bengaluru. As per Counterpoint, more than half of Apple's sales in India are driven by models older than the iPhone 8. Recently, a report said that Apple is seeing a higher demand in the older iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus models. “The utilization for the (iPhone) XR production is not reaching its maximum capacity now. Suppliers of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are getting a combined order of around 5 million more units,” a supply chain source was quoted as saying. Apple reportedly planned 20 million units for the older iPhone models this quarter, but raised the figure to 25 million units. Foxconn is the main supplier of the iPhone 8 Plus, while Pegatron is the key supplier for the smaller-screen model, the iPhone 8. When it comes to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the iPhone XS Max was outselling the iPhone XS by three to four times with the 256GB storage option of the 6.5-inch model, being the most popular of the lot. “We have determined that the demand for XS Max is better than expected (3–4 times that of XS). The Gold and Space-Grey colours are significantly more popular than the Silver. 256GB is the most popular, and 512GB is subject to a serious shortage because only Samsung can currently ship NAND Flash well. We are positive that Xs Max shipments will grow steadily in 4Q18 thanks to demand from Asia market and the gift season,” Kuo was quoted as saying.   Related Read: iPhone Xs Max demand is 3-4 times better than iPhone Xs: Ming-Chi Kuo Apple iPhone XR demand falls short of expectation

Samsung reportedly granted patent for a transforming drone

Key Highlights: Samsung has obtained a patent for a transforming drone The patent describes a drone that could come with foldable arms and a sliding mechanism The drone is said to feature a wide range of sensors, including a camera    While a layman might know Samsung for its smartphone manufacturing business, the company also makes many other devices and components. Samsung could also soon enter the drone market as GizmoChina reports that its new patent for a drone has been Published by the US Patents & Trademark Office. This is said to be Samsung’s fifth patent related to a drone this year and it has been applying and many drone-related patents since 2016. As per the report, the new patent describes a transforming drone, which is capable of folding its arms into its body and it could be an accessory for its next generation of Galaxy smartphones.  Alongside folding arms and a camera, Samsung could design a drone with many additional sensors like ultrasonic, temperature, light, gyros, barometer, compass, and ultraviolet sensors. “An aspect of the present disclosure provides a transformable drone in which an arm for fixing a propeller can be folded and unfolded against the main body (or an airframe) which may provide a transformable unmanned aerial vehicle which combines portability and flight performance through a transformable main body (or an airframe),” states the Samsung patent, via GizmoChina. Samsung may also add other functionalities to the drone like the ability to control it using other devices like a refrigerator or a washing machine. Samsung has its own range of smart devices and it won’t be that surprising if it launches a drone that can be controlled using its other products. However, we are a bit unsure as to who would fly a drone using their refrigerator or washing machine. The report further suggests that the drone could feature a sliding structure, which would enable it to change form and be more portable. Like most drones, the company might develop an app that would enable controlling it using a smartphone. While the reported patent does seem exciting, we suggest that you hold onto your horses since companies obtain patents all the time and may or may not actually use it.  Related Reads: Sony patent hints at a smartphone with a transparent display Samsung's latest patent hints at under-display fingerprint scanner covering the entire screen

Android Messages web app now lives in Googlecom, not Androidcom

One of Google’s oldest apps on the Play Store, Messages, has a web interface just like WhatsApp Web. When viewed on say, a computer screen by visiting Messages.Android.com, the web interface reflects SMS and MMS messages on the smartphone so you don’t have to use a phone all the time. The big news here is that new commits found in Chromium’s Gerrit source code management site suggest that the web interface will move from Messages.Android.com to Messages.Google.com. To everyday users like you and me, this URL shift is not a big deal. The web interface feature for Messages should remain the same. But according to GSMArena, who did some more digging in, the new commits will tell Chromebooks to stop using the Android.com URL and use the Google.com URL in versions 72 or 73 of Chrome OS. These versions are also said to include the ‘Better Together’ features for integrating Android and Chrome OS. The web interface for Messages is pretty straightforward Though the interface is now getting a new address on the internet, both URLs are expected to exist alongside each other for a while so users can transition to the new one without any hiccups. At the moment, punching in Messages.Google.com in a browser window takes you nowhere but the new URL is expected to be up and running shortly. If you’re using Messages.Android.com to receive and send SMS messages on your computer, you can continue to do so until Google redirects you or notifies you of a change in the address. We can’t say for sure why Google has decided to make such a change but we can theorise that it’s all in a bid to make its apps more universal. For example, ‘Android Messages’ was recently renamed to just ‘Messages’. ‘Android Wear’ evolved to ‘Wear OS’, and ‘Android Pay’ to ‘Google Pay’. It seems Google is gradually removing the Android name so these apps aren’t so closely associated only with the popular smartphone operating system. Doing this should give its products a stronger individual identity. Perhaps it’s so they can be made available as standalone apps on other platforms like Chrome OS and Apple’s iOS. Maybe it’s because Google has plans of rebranding Android altogether. Only time will tell.

Bixby 20 fails to finish tasks that Bixby 10 could do easily: Report

Highlights: Bixby 2.0 could not update apps, show YouTube subscriptions Galaxy Note 8 on Oreo can pull up the Uber app, the Note 9 can’t: Report Same commands fail on a Galaxy Note 9 running Oreo as well   Samsung announced the Bixby 2.0 a year ago and pinned a lot of hopes saying that the company is reinventing the digital assistants “from a novelty to an intelligence tool that is a key part of everyone's daily life.” Now it seems that Bixby 2.0 is not intelligent after all because as per a news report, the new version of the AI-powered virtual assistant cannot even follow the commands that the previous version could.   According to SamMobile, users who updated their Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ devices to Android Pie were reportedly complaining of trouble with the Bixby 2.0 working. Earlier it was though that it was the Android Pie update that was responsible for the buggy behaviour, but when the same was experienced with Bixby 2.0 running Android Oreo, it was confirmed that Bixby 2.0 still lacks the edge to compete against other assistants like Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri. “Samsung made a big deal out of Bixby 2.0 at the Galaxy Note 9 launch, showcasing how the virtual assistant can now have more natural conversations and perform tasks like ordering an Uber purely through voice commands. But while our Note 8 on Oreo can pull up the Uber app when asked, the Note 9 fails to do it. So does the S9+ on Android Pie. Other commands we tested included asking Bixby to update our apps, show YouTube subscriptions, check for a software update, and enable Dolby Atmos, and it fails to perform them all,” SamMobile claims. Bixby 2.0 differs from the previous version in other ways as well. Since the Galaxy S8 series, Samsung has been incorporating a dedicated physical button to summon the assistant. The button could be annoying for those who don’t use the virtual assistant during regular use. Luckily, customers could disable (or remap) it in case of Bixby 2.0 by using an app called bxActions. However, when you try to use the app to remap Bixby on the Galaxy Note 9 smartphone, it just denies permissions to ‘fully disable’ Bixby. Earlier, people could remap the Bixby button and to use it for other tasks like muting the phone, taking a screenshot, turning on flashlight or launching any app. Even in the app intro for bxActions on Play Store, the developers warned users not to update the assistant on a newer version. “Samsung does not allow remapping with Bixby 2.0 present in Galaxy Note 9. Do not update Bixby or firmware to Bixby 2.0!,” the description read.   Related Read: Bixby 2.0 with smart home functionality Bixby 2.0 cannot be 'fully disabled' on Samsung Galaxy Note 9
