Apple releases iOS 1241, WatchOS 531, MacOS 10146, and tvOS 1241

Apple, on Monday, released updates for a range of devices. It released the iOS 12.4.1 update that fixes major security flaw, watchOS 5.3.1, macOS Mojave 10.14.6 as well as the tvOS 12.4.1 update. All these updates are now available for users to download and install. Here’s everything that’s new with the updates.

First of all, Apple has made up for a mistake that allowed "malicious applications to execute arbitrary code with system privileges.” The iOS 12.4.1 update appears to fix the vulnerability that enabled jailbreaking. However, the notes don’t say much, and that the update “provides important security and stability updates.” It is available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users now. You can find more details about the update here.

Apple also released the macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Supplemental Update. According to the release notes, the update:

Resolves an issue that may cause certain Mac notebooks to shut down during sleep. Fixes an issue that may degrade performance when working with very large files. Addresses an issue that may prevent Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iMovie, and GarageBand from updating.

Lastly, tvOS 12.4.1 and watchOS 5.3.1 bring no major changes. However, according to the website, "use after free issue was addressed with improved memory management". The watchOS 5.3.1 update also focuses on fixing bugs instead of adding new features to the OS. Major changes could be introduced with the upcoming tvOS 13 and watchOS 6.

The Apple event that is expected to be held next month could introduce us to a 16-inch Macbook Pro, three new iPhones, a cheap iPad, better AirPods, and a new HomePod. The company might also unveil a new generation of Apple Watch that might have OLED screens.

Instagram reportedly developing a Snapchat competitor called Threads

Facebook owned photo-sharing app, Instagram is reportedly developing a new messaging app. It is allegedly aimed at helping users share more information more often with their closest friends. Threads is “meant to promote constant, intimate sharing between users and their closest friends,” The Verge reported. It appears to be yet another attempt by Facebook to take on Snapchat.

According to The Verge, Threads is designed as a companion app to Instagram. Users can not only share typical text, photo, and video messages using Instagram’s creative tools, but Threads invites users to automatically share their location, speed, and battery life with the “close friends” list on Instagram.

The Verge goes on to say, “Screenshots reviewed by The Verge show an app that’s designed to promote constant, automatic sharing between users and the people on their “close friends” list on Instagram. Opt in to automatic sharing, and Threads will regularly update your status, giving your friends a real-time view of information about your location, speed, and more. At the moment, Threads does not display your real-time location — instead, it might say something like a friend is “on the move,” according to sources familiar with the matter.

You can also update your status manually, with statuses appearing in the main feed along with messages. It’s the latest effort to automate status sharing using mobile phone sensors and one-tap status sharing.”

Earlier this year, Instagram ceased to work on a standalone messaging app called Direct, which it had been developing since late 2017. After the Facebook acquisition, Instagram employees who work on messaging were moved to the Facebook Messenger team.

Moreover, reports have indicated that the average Snapchat user spends more time inside the app than the average Instagram user does. Facebook might be taking a major step to to chip away at their rival’s appeal.

However, there is no word on the launch date of Threads yet.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro renders suggest circular quad-rear camera setup, front triple cameras and more

Huawei is reportedly gearing up to launch its next flagship, the Mate 30 series of handsets on September 19. Ahead of the official announcements, the upcoming smartphones have been leaked numerous times and you can add one more to the list. A contributor on SlashLeaks has posted an alleged promo image of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, which hints at a circular quad-camera setup on the back. In addition, the image showcases the front of the phone, which is seen featuring a standard squarish notch. However, it houses three cameras on the front as opposed to its predecessor, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, which has a single camera on the front.

Huawei is expected to ship the same camera that is used on the P30 Pro, which consists of a quad camera setup. The Huawei P30 Pro features a 40 MP main sensor that has an f/1.6 aperture lens, an 8MP periscope camera with  f/3.4 aperture, a 20MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a TOF 3D sensor. However, a previous report suggests that the Huawei Mate 30 Pro could feature two custom-made 40MP cameras on the back, instead of just one. The handset is most likely to use the company’s patented RYYB pixel layout.

The Mate 30 series is also expected to feature the Huawei Mate 30, which would be the smaller sibling of the Mate 30 Pro. The device was previously spotted in a couple of live images and is touted to sport a waterfall screen design. The leaked images showcase a pronounced curvature towards the handset’s edges, however, the Mate 30 Pro is expected to come with a curvier screen than the Mate 30. You can check out the previously leaked image of the handset here.

Some information about the device’s charging capability has also popped up online. As per a tipster on Weibo, the Mate 30 might ship with 25W wireless charging support, which is even higher than the 15W wireless fast charging that is currently available on Samsung’s latest Note flagship.

Redmi Note 8, Note 8 Pro leaked prices indicate lineup to become more expensive

The Redmi Note 8 Pro is confirmed to debut on August 29 at an event in China. It will be one of the first 64MP camera smartphone and as such, there are a lot of expectations behind the device. Now, in the days preceding the launch, nearly every feature of the phone has been officially or unofficially revealed, save for the price. And now, that too is out in the open thanks to a tipster based out of China. He revealed the Redmi Note 8 and the Redmi Note 8 Pro prices in Chinese Yuan, and by the looks of it, Redmi’s Note series could become a little more expensive.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro’s price for the variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage will reportedly be set at RMB 1799 (roughly Rs 18,000). The top-end variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage will be priced a little higher at RMB 2,099 (roughly Rs 21,000). Similarly, the Redmi Note 8 with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage could be priced at RMB 1199 (roughly Rs 12,000). Another variant of the Redmi Note 8 is also expected but pricing for that has not been leaked, so far. The information comes from an unverified source on Weibo and was spotted by 91Mobiles.

Alongside the price, the retail box of the Redmi Note 8 Pro was also officially revealed by Redmi CEO Lu Weibing to tease the launch of the phone. The box is in line with the recent rebranding Redmi undertook with a predominantly pinkish coloured exterior.

As for the specifications, it’s now revealed the Redmi Note 8 Pro will be powered by the newly unveiled MediaTek Helio G90T. It’s a gaming chipset that MediaTek had earlier confirmed would debut on a Redmi device. Previous leaks have also indicated the phone could come with liquid cooling for sustained high performance along with a 4,500mAh battery.

The phone’s design, based on live hands-on images leaked online, will be more akin to the Redmi K20 series. On the back will be a triple camera setup with one of them being the 64MP camera sensor from Samsung. Unfortunately, the Redmi Note 8 Pro will not feature an in-display fingerprint sensor as evident from the rear-mounted capacitive sensor on the body.
