It does make sense for Xiaomi to complete its trio of budget phones across different price points, especially if the phones have already been unveiled globally. Hence, it isn’t surprising is the company does go ahead and bring the Redmi 9A to India as Redmi 9i.

Netflix cancels Altered Carbon, here are 6 shows to scratch that cyberpunk itch

Well, the dreaded 2 season Netflix curse strikes again as Altered Carbon has now been cancelled on the streaming platform. Netflix decided not to order a third season of the sci-fi/cyberpunk show. This comes as the streaming giant also cancelled two other shows in The Society, and I am not OK with this. It seems that unlike the other two shows that were cancelled because of problems arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. Deadline reports that Altered Carbon was not renewed for a third season as the second season did not garner as many viewers as Netflix though it would and this it came down to the ‘viewership vs cost renewal review process.’

The first season was one of the streaming platform’s most popular shows and since Netflix does not release any numbers, we can only speculate that it was the lukewarm reception to the second season that caused this cancellation.

The show was one of the better representations of the cyberpunk genre and it is a shame to see it go. But, worry not as we’ve scoured Netflix and come with a much-needed list on the best cyberpunk shows on the platform to really scratch the Altered Carbon itch.

Also, if cyberpunk and sci-fi are not your thing, why not check out the best superhero and fantasy shows on Netflix?

Ghost in the Shell series

If you haven’t heard of the Ghost in the Shell series, then know this. All the major concepts and ideas in Hollywood films like The Matrix have been influenced by this manga and subsequent animated film and Anime show. If you’re looking for a show to lose yourself into then you should check out Stand Alone Complex first, then move onto Solid State Society and finally cleanse your palette with SAD 2045. This is cyberpunk at its daring and boundary-breaking best. The show deals with so many themes and ideas that stem from a technologicallly advanced society. Thought-provoking and action-packed, Ghost in the Shell should be your new jam on Netflix.

Love, Death and Robots

Love, Death and Robots is a bunch of animated shorts that lets creators run wild with their ideas. Each short is animated in a myriad of ways and each of these shorts is unique in their own way. Our favourites include Beyond the Aquila Rift, The Witness and The Sucker of Souls. There are 18 episodes in total and you’ll breeze through most of them as they aren’t very long. Just a word of caution, even though these shorts are animated, they are definitely not meant for children. A lot of these shorts really push the edge of animation and what a cyberpunk future could actually look like.

Snowpiercer

While not strictly cyberpunk in execution, Snowpiercer taps into the more dystopian nature of the genre as it takes the ideas that were explored in the film and examines it in more detail. For the uninitiated, the show takes place in a future where the world has been frozen over in a cataclysmic environmental disaster and the only survivors left alive live on a train called Snowpiercer that constantly circles the Earth in a never-ending loop. The train is split into various sections with each mirroring our own society. And on top of all this, there are a series of gruesome murders that threatens to destroy the delicate balance on Snowpiercer.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

One of the more influential anime in the 90s, Neon Genesis Evangelion is not your average cute Japanese animation. The story is set in the near future of 2015 (20 years after the show actually aired in 1995) where Earth is constantly attacked by alien beings called Angels and humanity has to fight back using giant robots called EVAs. It’s a little more complicated than that but rest assured the show is action-packed and treads on familiar cyberpunk themes such as individual consciousness in the face of machine supremacy. It’s a great show that is deep, insightful and just plain cool.

12 Monkeys

Based on the film of the same name, 12 Monkeys is a mind-bending, time-warping show that takes the best of the films dystopian and futuristic setting and extrapolates on it. The story of the show deals with a low-life called James in 2043 who has to travel back in time to 2015 to stop the world from being engulfed in a deadly plague caused by the Army of the 12 Monkeys who released the virus. It is a well-crafted show with excellent characters, a great narrative and will also fill that cyberpunk shaped hole in your heart.

Black Mirror

As we’ve said before, Black Mirror is one of the top Netflix series on the platform and you’ll be doing yourself a big disservice by not checking it out. The show is a series of episodes about the dangers of futuristic technology and how we as humans can be negatively affected by it. The show is basically everything that the cyberpunk genre has been about all these years. It is incredibly topical, seemingly set in a version of the future that we can actually see coming our way. Highly intelligent and well-written, Black Mirror will fix your need for a thinking man’s sci-fi TV show.

Canon EOS R5 receives first firmware update since launch

Canon released the EOS R5 and EOS R6 earlier last month. The two cameras are primed for photo and video shooters alike, but the two cameras haven’t had the smoothest of launch. Various issues have been reported by early adopters of the EOS R5 and EOS R6, with heating issues being one of the most widely reported ones. Today, Canon has released a firmware update for the EOS R5 that seeks to resolve some early teething issues.

Firmware 1.1.0 for the Canon EOS R5 brings a number of fixes for the camera, the most notable one being related to heating. The new firmware will no longer disable the overheat control function when shooting with an external monitor or recorder. Overheat control’s primary job is to automatically adjust the frame rates and movie size while the camera is in standby in order to prevent any more heat build-up. This allows the camera to shoot longer, but the issue is adjusted frame rates, which might not be ideal for some, especially seeing how the EOS R5 shoots 8K Video.

Canon EOS R5 has received its first firmware update that improves image stabilisation performance amongst others.

The new firmware also drastically improves the calculation of the time remaining on the camera for shooting. The last major improvement is to the image stabilisation system, which now works more reliably with specific RF lenses. The IS also now compensates shake up to 6-stops, an improvement over the 5-stop compensation that the cameras launched with. You can read the whole list of features in the firmware below.

Useful messaging is now displayed when [HDMI display: Camera+External monitor] and [Overheat control: on] settings are enabled. When using certain RF lenses for movie shooting, the in-lens image stabilization mechanism has been improved. Fixes a phenomenon in which the “Slow Synchro” setting screen is not accurately displayed, when the language is set to English. Fixes a typo displayed on the communication setting screen, when the language is set to Korean. Connectivity during FTP transmission has been improved. Fixes a phenomenon, in which the card access time may take longer, when using certain CF express cards. Temperature detection and shooting time control in video shooting have been improved. In addition, the total shooting time when the short-time recording and power-on/off are performed repeatedly at room temperature is improved. The phenomenon in which the movie recording time available is not correctly displayed when the Date/Time/Zone is not set has been corrected.

Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro and Mi 10T leaked online, could launch in India soon

Xiaomi Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro could soon launch globally and in India too. The Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro are slated to succeed the Mi 9T series from last year and both the phones were spotted in a listing and alleged press renders were subsequently leaked by a Twitter user, revealing some key specifications.

XDA developers report that they spotted a” brand-new phone” with the codename Apollo on OfferUp which is an online retailer platform. Moreover, a member of the XDA community who goes by the name kacskrz discovered the model names of the Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro in MIUI 12 beta and corroborated with earlier findings to conclude that the phone listed on OfferUp is most likely the Mi 10T Pro. The codes also indicate that Xiaomi could be launching a global and an Indian variant of the Mi 10T series.

Elsewhere, a Twitter user who goes by the name Abhishek Yadav posted an alleged picture of the Mi 10T Pro which gives us a glimpse of the vertical camera module on the upcoming phone with a 108MP camera.

You can also notice the power button which is slightly recessed as it doubles up as a fingerprint reader. The folks over at XDA also found traces of the codename Apollo in Xiaomi’s camera app which carries a 64MP camera sensor while the Apollo pro comes with a 108MP camera.

Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro, Mi 10T leaked specifications

As per the tweet by Yadav, Mi 10T Pro could come featuring a 144Hz high-refresh-rate display, 108MP rear camera and 5,000mAh battery to boot. The phones are expected to be powered by either the Snapdragon 865 or Snapdragon 865 Plus processor which puts them in the flagship range of smartphones.

Last year, Xiaomi rebranded the Redmi K20 and K20 Pro as the Mi 9T and 9T Pro but this year, the Redmi K30 series is already out and so it’s good to see the company working on a new range of phones.

The Mi 10T Pro and Mi 10T are expected to be launched in the coming few weeks, and we will know more about it as we near the launch date. There’s no word on the India launch as well, but Xiaomi did announce the Redmi 9 budget phone earlier today.

Google Maps rolls out a new Saved tab to keep track of your favourite places

Google already rolled out a big redesign for Google Maps earlier this year in celebration of the app’s 15th birthday, but Google is not done yet. The redesign brought a new icon, navigation bar, more transit features and a live view where it uses the camera to show real-time directions overlaid on what you see (it’s not available in India yet). And now, continuing with the redesign, Google has rolled out a new feature for Google Maps that helps with remembering saved places.

There’s a new Saved tab in the Google Maps app at the top. So you can easily navigate to the place you have saved or find a nearby place you have saved. Once you have granted the location permission to the app, Google Maps will show you all your nearby saved places in a carousel for easy picking. These saved places will be arranged based on proximity.

Google Maps launched a new feature called Saved tabs

Another new feature is the ability to track the places you’ve been to, using location history. This becomes handy when you have to trace your steps back if you wish to find something, or simply to reminisce where you spent your time in a particular city.

The new features are being rolled out in phases and will first hit Android smartphones. The changes have been spotted in the 10.48.2 version of Google Maps.
