YouTube for Android TV gets limited 8K support

YouTube is by far one of the largest repositories of video content on the internet. With the new flagship smartphones supporting 8K recording, it is but natural that we will see more 8K videos on YouTube. However, if you have an 8K TV, then up till now the YouTube app on that TV was showing a maximum resolution of 4K. It looks like that is about to change.

According to Android Police, “Version 2.12.08 now brings limited 8K support to Android TVs on version 10 and above. That feature we know for sure”. So, after the update, if you search for 8K videos, chances are you may be able to see them in all 8K glory, if you are one of the few people that has an 8K TV like the Sony Z8H (review).

The details of YouTube for Android TV 2.12.08 are as follows

Display YouTube Music splash screen Cast Connect support Limited 8K support to Android 10 and up Improved resolution selection Fixed incorrect date and time issues Various other platform improvements

8K TVs may be far and few, but it looks like 8K content is already making an appearance. As we said, the new flagship smartphones can shoot video in 8K, and the new PS5 and Xbox Series X also boast of 8K support (which looks to be inactive as of now but may be updated once streaming platforms start supporting the resolution). It’s only a matter of time before we see streaming dongles like the Fire TV stick and more launch 8K capable versions.

If you are wondering how much data is consumed when streaming YouTube in 8K, Android Authority says that data consumed in 60 minutes of 8K playback from YouTube is about 9.0 to 22.5 GB with an average bitrate of 20-50 Mbps. So, if you have a data limit, you may want to consider upgrading to an unlimited broadband plan with high speeds. Sony says that the PS5 launch was the biggest in the companys console history

While the PS5 has no official launch date in India, it clearly has not stopped it from being Sony’s biggest console launch yet. While there have been no official sales figures announced, the company claims that it is its “biggest launch ever”. In a tweet posted yesterday, Sony thanked gamers who supported the PS5 launch but also confirmed that demand was outstripping supply and that there are definitely shortages of the console in the market.

We want to thank gamers everywhere for making the PS5 launch our biggest console launch ever. Demand for PS5 is unprecedented, so we wanted to confirm that more PS5 inventory will be coming to retailers before the end of the year - please stay in touch with your local retailers.

— PlayStation (@PlayStation) November 25, 2020

Sony also confirmed that the company will make sure that there will be more inventory in the coming months so that fans of the PS5 can actually get their hands on the console, in time for the holidays. In terms of launch records, the previous one was set by the PS4 when it was announced by Sony that the console had sold 2.1 million units after going on sale on 15 November 2013. Demand is so high scalpers managed to snag about 3500 consoles. Digit even went to known games and console retailers and found out that they were selling the PS5 for Rs 90,000 a pop!

So yes, the hype is real and so are the exorbitant prices. Sony have confirmed that the PS5 will cost Rs 50,000 for the Disc Edition and Rs 40,000 for the Digital Edition. But again, there’s no launch date announced for India yet.

Redesigned MacBook with Apple Silicon, new iPad Pro with OLED display and more scheduled for 2021: Report

Apple has had a pretty good 2020. It not only launched the four models in the iPhone 12 lineup but also revived the iPhone SE in 2020 (review) and brought its own silicon to the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13 and Mac Mini. The Cupertino tech giant also launched a redesigned iPad Air (review) which we really like. But it looks like Apple is looking to make a big splash in 2021 as well.

Redesigned MacBook's with Apple Silicon expected in 2021

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to release more Macs with the Apple Silicon in 2021 as a part of its transition from Intel chips. The next Macs to get the Apple Silicon are the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro. These Macs are expected to launch in the second or third quarter of 2021. It is possible that these Macs will come with the rumoured souped-up version of the M1 chip, currently speculated as the M1X. The M1 is the chip powering the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13 and the Mac Mini. The chip has received some great reviews for its performance, but the Mac Mini seems to be plagued with some Bluetooth issues.

While we haven’t seen a 14-inch MacBook Pro, one can expect the highest tier 13.3-inch MacBook Pro for 2021 to come with a slight redesign bringing with it a larger display, similar to what we saw when transitioning from the 15-inch MacBook Pro to the 16-inch one.

New iPad and iPad Pro in 2021

While Apple is rumoured to launch a new iPad with a Mini LED display in the first half of 2021, we could see an iPad Pro with an OLED display towards the latter half of next year.

If rumours circulating the internet are to be believed, then the previous-generation iPad Air specifications could find themselves on the 2021 iPad. Whether this will be the one sporting a Mini LED display remains to be seen. You can read more about the 2021 iPad here.

Moving over to the iPad Pro, it looks like the biggest change will be with the display, which will now sport an OLED Panel. According to South Korean news outlet TheElec, the OLED displays on the new iPad Pros will come from Samsung and LG. To counter the effects of burn-in and loss of brightness over time, the emitting layers will be stacked on top of the OLED panel. This will ensure a longer lifespan for the display. How this will translate in the real world is something we will know when we get our hands on it next year.

Do note however that PUBG Corp has not confirmed an exact launch date for PUBG Mobile India yet. The post clearly states that through this notification, PUBG wants to escalate the publishing process and get the game going in India.

Previously, there have been reports of users having seen a page on the official website that hinted at the game being released for Android users first. This was also reported by one of the founders of GEM esports. The new report is in line with this as it looks like the developers are prioritizing the Android release over iOS. Nonetheless, it is also very likely that PUBG Mobile India ends up being released for both Android and iOS at the same time.

PUBG Mobile India was rumoured to release on November 20 in India, however, we were able to confirm that it wasn’t the case and players will have to wait longer. PUBG Corp is definitely making headway into the launch of PUBG Mobile India and has released a dedicated website, Instagram, Facebook handles and a YouTube channel.

PUBG Mobile India is set to release sometime soon and will feature customized content including a virtual simulation training ground, clothed characters from the start, green hit effects and restriction settings on game time to inculcate healthy gaming habits in younger players. Here are answers to some common questions about the return of PUBG Mobile in India.

Apple MacBook Air with M1 processor awarded 11 million points on AnTuTu benchmark

Apple’s latest MacBook Air that is powered by the new M1 processor has received a score of over 1.1 million points on AnTuTu benchmarks. With this, the M1 processor has become the first chipset to cross the 1 million threshold on the AnTuTu V8 version. Apple announced its octa-core M1 SoC earlier this month and unveiled three products. Apple’s home-grown M1 silicon powers the latest 13-inch MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and the Mac Mini.

According to a post published by AnTuTu, the Apple M1 chip has scored 1,119,243 points in their benchmarking tests. The scores were awarded in the different tests based on CPU, GPU, Memory and UX performance. Interestingly, the AnTuTu benchmark recognised the new MacBook Air as an iPad Pro running on iOS 14.2. This is because the new MacBook can also run iOS apps and so these scores are based on how it performs on the iOS version of the benchmarking app.

AnTuTu details that the new MacBook Air was able to get a CPU score of 282,265 points, GPU score of 538,944 points, MEM score of 189,921 points and UX score of 108,113 points. The scores of the Apple M1 chip were then also compared with those of the iPad Pro 4.

Comparing the results, it was found that Apple’s M1 chip has a lead of more than 48% over the iPad Pro 4. The iPad Pro 4 received a CPU score of 187,362 points, GPU score of 374,845 points, Memory score of 115,118 points and UX score of 77,969 points.

Previous reports have also indicated that benchmark numbers from the MacBook Air powered by Apple’s M1 silicon seem to outperform the top-of-the-line 16-inch MacBook Pro. The AnTuTu benchmark results for the new chip also lends credence to the fact that the new MacBook Pro is a powerful machine.

On GeekBench 5, single and multi-core scores for the M1 powered MacBook Air are 1687 and 7433 respectively. On the other hand, Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro powered by the Intel Core i9-9989HK (8-core chip) and 64GB RAM scores 1097 and 7014 respectively.

Apple’s M1 silicon is fabricated using a 5-nanometer process and consists of an octa-core CPU, an eight-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. The previous generation Mac devices used multiple chips for the CPU, GPU, I/O, memory, Thunderbolt and security, however, with the M1 combines it all on a single SoC making the new devices highly efficient and powerful.

The new MacBooks with Apple M1 chipset are currently on sale in India and you can purchase them from the Apple Store Online as it also allows buyers to upgrade the configuration. Additionally, you can read more about the Apple M1 processor here and about the pricing, specs and availability of the new Macs in India here.
