PUBG Mobile raked in record-setting 44 percent more revenue in November, surpasses Fortnite mobile for the first time

Highlights: PubG Mobile raked in a record $32.5 million in revenue in November It's the highest ever grossed by the game in a single month, about 44 percent more than October The revenue from the game crosses the monthly earnings by the mobile version of Fortnite for the first time   November was the best month of PubG Mobile for Tencent, the Chinese cloud company that owns the game. According to a report by mobile app analytics firm Sensor Tower, PubG Mobile garnered a whopping $32.5 million in revenue. It’s by far the game’s highest total revenue for a single month. The sheer popularity of battle royale game shot the revenue up by a record 44 percent from October,  which was the previous best for the mobile game when it raked in $25.7 million. While India only contributed to 2 percent of the total revenue in November, players in the US raked in 22 percent or $7.1 million of the total revenue earned. Even players in Japan contributed around 20 percent or $6.4 million in total. On an average, it was estimated that PubG players spent $1.1 million on the game per day. The surge meant that just the mobile version of PubG surpassed Fortnite’s revenues for the first time on iOS since the game debuted. However, despite edging out Fortnite in the revenue numbers, PubG Mobile is still not the highest grossing mobile game. That honour belongs to NetEase’s Knives Out, a game massively popular primarily in China, Japan and other South Asian countries which raked in $52 million worldwide. PubG Mobile’s new Vikendi map is likely to bolster revenues even more for the game. Many believe PubG Mobile stalled the dipping popularity of the battle royale game that first caused all the rage on PCs. The game was losing out to Fortnite, and the launch of the mobile version scripted a comeback for PubG. The primary reason why the game is so popular on smartphones is the fact that even entry-level budget devices support the game. Furthermore, the proliferation of high-speed 4G connectivity has led to a lot of people in India becoming regular players of the game. While the game itself is free to play, PubG relies on a freemium model of in-app purchases that includes buying new weapon skins, costumes, finishing moves and more. While spending does affect how well you play the game, most players spend money to look different and stand out. Sensor Tower data shows the most common thing users bought was the 600 UC in-game currency pack that unlocks crates and costume combos. That alone sells for Rs 799. Android TV now has tens of millions of users, says Google

Bugdroid, the green droid you see on most mobile phones out there, is going places. Originally started life as an open-source operating system for smartphones in 2008, Android is now seen in car head units, wireless speakers, and televisions. Android TV is an Android-based software platform for modern televisions and set-top boxes. It was launched in 2014 after the less-successful Google TV project. According to Google, Android TV currently has “tens of millions of users”. According to a recent report by Multichannel, Shalini Govil-Pai, Senior Director of Product Management for Android TV, the platform designed to provide access to over-the-top apps on digital video players, is now being used by “tens of millions” of consumers, primarily in Europe and Asia. According to her, about half of those users are from the platform’s operator partners.  What this means is not that there are thousands of set-top boxes powered by Android TV but that most of the takers for Android TV are those who manufacture televisions. This includes big television brands like Sony, Sharp, and Vu. Apart from television manufacturers, cable TV providers have also started riding the Android TV bandwagon. DirecTV, for one, is planning on launching a new set-top box next year in the US with Android TV behind the wheel. A typical Android TV-powered television comes with Google Assistant built into it. It’s capable of accepting voice commands from users to show them what movies and TV shows are popular at the moment. It can play Netflix shows when the user asks it to. An Android TV-powered television comes with Chromecast built in, which lets users play media from their smartphone on the television.
