Samsung Galaxy Fold unfolded in a 4-minute long video

Highlights: We got the best look so far at the Samsung Galaxy Fold in a 4-minute long video. The phone is not being displayed at the showfloor at MWC The video shows the foldable phone being used to watch Netflix, playing games and more. Samsung may not be allowing journalists to see and touch the Galaxy Fold, but a 4-minute long video released by the company gives us the best look at the futuristic smartphone. The footage is essentially a 4-minute long silent B-roll but it does show the foldable phone from just about every angle, and also while it’s being used. The video reveals more than what Samsung showed during its keynote event in San Francisco where it launched the Galaxy S10 devices along with the Galaxy Fold. While Samsung mostly kept the Galaxy Fold in the dark with only one live demo of the phone, the video gives a well-lit view of the phone from up close. A range of close-up shots also show the hinge of the Galaxy Fold, the phone mode and the tablet mode. It’s evident there’s a slight gap along the hinges when it’s closed. Apart from the phone, Samsung also showed how the apps will look like on the large screen. The company did show a demo of how Google Maps adapts from the small screen to the larger display. The video now gives a glimpse into how Instagram, Netflix and Google Maps work. We also got a look at the cameras in phone and tablet mode. Furthermore, the large tablet display will also offer an immersive gaming experience as seen in the video while the USB-C port can be used to connect the phone to a bigger display to run Samsung DeX for a more desktop-like experience. The Galaxy Fold uses a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex display that lets the screen to fold along the hinges. When folded, the Galaxy Fold uses a separate 4.6-inch HD+ flanked by thick bezels to display content. When unfurled, the phone opens up to a QXGA+ resolution panel with 4.2:3 aspect ratio. It can be folded and put into a pocket. Samsung has priced the Galaxy Fold at $1980 (roughly Rs 1,40,352) and plans to start shipping from April 26th. Huawei also launched it’s own take of a foldable phone, the Mate X which will also go on sale in summer, priced at 2,299 euros (roughly Rs 1,85,078). Oppo also showed off a foldable phone concept while Xiaomi also previously spoke about its plans of making a foldable phone. Clearly, 2019 is going to be an exciting year for smartphones now that they have finally unshackled themselves from the boring old form factor. MWC 2019: Qualcomm announces 5G chip for PCs, Wi-Fi chip for automobiles

Highlights: Qualcomm announces a 5G chip for PCs at MWC 2019 Lenovo to introduce a device with this chip by 2020 The San Diego-based company also announces a Wi-Fi chip for automobiles   As news pours in at a steady pace from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, we get news of Qualcomm’s announcements on the first day. Qualcomm Technologies, a Qualcomm subsidiary, has launched the Snapdragon 8cx 5G compute platform, a 5G-enabled networking chip for PCs. According to the company, it will help PC manufacturers take advantage of of the global rollout of the much-awaited 5G network. It’s expected to be seen in  various types of laptops, including Thin and Light laptops. Qualcomm has also announced the Automotive Wi-Fi 6 chip, the QCA6696, for in-vehicle entertainment systems. “In collaboration with Qualcomm, we’re excited to be the first to deliver a 5G connected PC with the Snapdragon 8cx 5G compute platform in early 2020,” commented Johnson Jia, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Lenovo Intelligent Devices Group’s Consumer PCs and Smart Devices. What this means is that the very first of the computers to feature Qualcomm’s new 5G chip could well be a Lenovo laptop. Though there’s no exact model name mentioned in Qualcomm’s PR, we expect Lenovo’s first 5G computer to be a ThinkPad or IdeaPad laptop. Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi platform for automobiles, on the other hand, features dual Wi-Fi 6 multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) access points designed to support Gigabit in-car hotspot and to deliver Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the vehicle, supporting ultra-high definition (ultra-HD) video streaming on multiple displays, screen mirroring from compatible devices and wireless reverse cameras, as well as support for Bluetooth 5.1 and Qualcomm aptX Adaptive audio. Additionally, this setup can help the vehicle with functions like vehicle diagnostics and software updates. “As vehicle connectivity continues to advance from 4G to 5G, Wi-Fi 6 is an integral part of the connectivity evolution, as it enables seamless connections, across multiple devices, and in congested environments. The QCA6696 builds on our leadership in the automotive industry, proving yet again how we are in an unparalleled position to meet the demands of the industry,” said Nakul Duggal, the Senior Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.   Related Read: All the foldable smartphones announced so far at MWC 2019

MWC 2019: Google Assistant comes to Android Messages, brings voice typing, Actions to KaiOS running feature phones

Highlights: Google Assistant will be integrated into Google Messages in the coming months. The feature will allow users to ask a question and the answer will populate the text field. The smart assistant will also enable voice-typing in KaiOS-powered feature phones. At MWC 2019, that formally kicked off in Barcelona on Monday, Google announced that its smart assistant is going to be integrated into Android Messages “over the coming months.” The Google Assistant button might appear when you’re using the Messages app to text someone, perhaps in the smart replies section. If you tap on the button, you can ask it a question, and the answer will be populated in the text field. The feature, for now, is limited to the English language. Google also clarified it’s not reading your texts while doing so. It said that the only information that’s sent to the company’s servers is the question you ask Google Assistant within the app. The company calls it “suggestion chips” and they are generated using local analysis of what you are typing. For instance, if someone asks you to go to a restaurant with them, Google will show a pizza emoji and a ‘yes’, along with a button that searches for the restaurant. Tapping on the suggestion and the Assistant box will show a card with the information about the restaurant and options and one can send the results back to the person they are chatting with. It’s not clear how the Assistant Card will look to the user receiving it. The feature comes after Google formally shut down its messaging app Allo that came with Google Assistant integration. The app is slated to shut down in March and after that, Google’s Android Messages will be the company’s primary texting app for consumers. The Messages app supports SMS, MMS and RCS. Google also announced that voice typing will be available via Google Assistant on devices running on KaiOS, which is an operating system made for smart feature phones. Google claimed there was a 7x increase in the use of Google Assistant among feature phone users in India, Indonesia, Mexico and Brazil in 2018. The speech-to-text feature will allow feature phone users to populate a text field using nothing but their voice. You need to hold down the Assistant button to type. At the same time, Google also announced it’s bringing Android 9 Pie Actions to Android Go Edition as well as KaiOS. Developers will be able to offer third-party Google Assistant applets in feature phones and entry-level phones. The company even launched an entry-level phone simulator for testing.
