Apple acknowledges and apologises for faulty third-generation butterfly keyboard on MacBooks

Highlights: Apple says “we are sorry” for users facing issues with their third-generation butterfly keyboard. Users have complained of failure on MacBooks using the butterfly keyboard mechanism. Apple’s apology comes as a response to a WSJ article that highlights the issue. Users of Apple MacBook have been complaining about the butterfly-switch keyboard design for quite some time now. As iFixit puts it, minute particles like sand can enter and cause failure of keys on Apple MacBooks that use a butterfly-switch keyboard design. Now, the company has acknowledged the issue in a response to an article by Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal. Stern’s column again casts light at the problem of butterfly keyboards on MacBooks, which can be jammed even when "something as small as a grain of sand" sneaks in. The issue is said to persist even with the company’s third-generation butterfly keyboard, which was supposed to put an end to all such problems.  “We are aware that a small number of users are having issues with their third-generation butterfly keyboard and for that we are sorry,” an Apple spokesman told Stern in a statement. “The vast majority of Mac notebook customers are having a positive experience with the new keyboard.” The company has left out the details of exactly how many users have complained of facing the issue, but this acknowledgement at least means that the company is aware and recognises the problem. This comes after Apple announced an extended keyboard service programme to solve the problems users are facing with its laptops that employ the butterfly mechanism keyboard.  While the most likely solution to the problem is Apple changing the keyboard’s design it’s using on its newer MacBooks, it remains to be known what the company’s next steps will be in order to remedy the situation. In case you are one such MacBook user who is facing a faulty keyboard issue, the only solution for this currently is to contact Apple customer support.  In other Apple news, the company has announced a slew of new services at “It’s showtime” event. Apple TV+ is a subscription-based video streaming service, while Apple News+ brings magazine subscriptions to the Apple News app with over 300 magazines to choose from. The company has also announced Apple Arcade game subscription service for iOS, Apple TV and Mac and there’s also Apple Card, which is a credit card by Apple with no penalties and late fees.  Via  Related Reads: Apple promises fix for faulty 'butterfly' keyboards

Microsoft bans April Fools day pranks

Highlights: Microsoft bars employees from indulging in April Fools’ Day. An executive said that pranks attract negative feedback more than the positive ones. It is that time of the year when people use their best ideas (or in some cases, pretty bad ones) to prank others in every possible way. The April Fools' tradition is followed by many people across the world, including those who work for technology companies like Google and Microsoft. But this year, Microsoft has taken a step back and has instructed employees to avoid making any jokes that could attract more flak than positive feedback. In a memo, Microsoft’s Marketing Chief Chris Capossela (obtained by The Verge), has asked employees to ensure that people are aware about company’s decision on the April Fools’ Day activities. “It’s that time of year when tech companies try to show their creativity with April Fools’ Day stunts. Sometimes the outcomes are amusing and sometimes they’re not. Either way, data tells us these stunts have limited positive impact and can actually result in unwanted news cycles,” he wrote in the memo “Considering the headwinds the tech industry is facing today, I’m asking all teams at Microsoft to not do any public-facing April Fools’ Day stunts. I appreciate that people may have devoted time and resources to these activities, but I believe we have more to lose than gain by attempting to be funny on this one day. Please forward to your teams and internal partners to ensure people are aware of the ask to stand down on external April Fools’ Day activities,” he added. The executive is true about the headwinds as well as about unwanted news cycles. For example, Google’s “Mic Drop” April Fools’ Day prank didn’t come out as it was supposed to and backfired big time so much so that the company had to apologise. In 2016, the search giant announced that it launched a new feature called “mic drop”, which, as the name suggests, could be used to have a final say in a conversation. However, it looked like Google pranked itself and the feedback was more negative than positive. “Again, sorry. We love April Fools jokes at Google, and we regret that this joke missed the mark and disappointed you,” Google had said. Last year, Xiaomi pulled an April Fools’ Day joke saying that the company would launch Mi A1 with six cameras. A year later, we can say that OEMs could soon make that joke a reality because Nokia has already launched a phone with five rear cameras. Meanwhile, Razer was successful in fooling people about a drink that was claimed to boost gamers’ ability to play games. The manufacturer, known for its gaming hardware and smartphone, announced Project Venom v2, a solution that boosts gamers’ gaming abilities and marketed it as an improved variant of 2010’s Project Venom. We at Digit also ‘launched’ an ultra-specced smartphone called the Votafone with specifications like Dual 64 bit Quad Core processors, Dual 5.5 inch AMOLED screen, Dual 21MP 2K cameras, and a 7200 mAH battery made from the revolutionary material Graphene. Even though Microsoft has banned the idea of not pranking people on the first day of April, it doesn’t mean that you ditch April Fools' Day. Apparently it’s a precautionary step that the Windows-maker has taken to avoid “unwanted news cycles,” but given the participation by several tech bigwigs, joking doesn’t seem to be a bad idea after all. Oppo Reno with Snapdragon 855 to feature liquid cooling, leaked case renders and hands-on video suggest unique pop-up camera design

Highlights:  Snapdragon 855 powered Oppo Reno to come with liquid cooling. Some images of the phone have also leaked online, showcasing a unique pop-up front camera design. The handset will be announced on April 10. Oppo has already announced that it will soon introduce new smartphones in China under its latest series called Reno. The new lineup is set to be announced on April 10 and it will join the company’s existing lineup of F-series and R-series smartphones. Now, new information about the Oppo Reno has surfaced in the form of leaks and official confirmations. Firts off, Oppo‘s VP, Brian Shen has confirmed that there will be a different version of the Oppo Reno smartphone. The high-end version of the handset will come equipped with a copper tube and also support liquid cooling. Secondly some leaked images of the phone’s protective case reveal a rather peculiar front camera design on the phone.  Let's get into some details here. Starting off with the official announcement, Shen has confirmed that the Oppo Reno will be made available in two variants. One of these models will be equipped with a copper tube and support liquid cooling, which is most likely the Snapdragon 855-powered variant. While the other version is said to use “heat-conducting gel and graphite sheet” for heat dissipation. The latter model of the phone is speculated to launch running on the Snapdragon 710 SoC. The Snapdragon 855 powered version Oppo Reno is also confirmed to sport 10x zoom capabilities and pack a 4065mAh battery. Coming to the second report of the handset’s leaked images posted on Slashleaks, the phone’s front camera is seen popping up in such a manner that it creates a ramp on the top edge of the handset. Both images and a hand-on video of the new pop-up mechanism on the Oppo Reno have leaked on Slashleaks. The Oppo Reno has been leaked once previously in a hands-on video. Comparing the two leaks, the design of the phone’s front panel is in line with the video but we can’t be too sure of the unique pop-up camera mechanism since it was not shown off in the phone’s previously leaked video. However, tipster Star Universe, who posted the Oppo Reno hands-on video, also confirmed that there are two versions of Oppo Reno.  The newly leaked images of the phone also hint at a vertically aligned dual rear camera setup. Rumours suggest that the company could equip it with a 48MP camera with dual aperture support that ranges between f/1.5 to f/2.4. While we can’t be too sure of anything until the official announcement is made by Oppo, we suggest you consider the leaked images of the phone with a bit of salt.  Related Reads:  Oppo ‘Reno’ smartphone series announced, to officially launch on April 10
