Netflix dives headfirst into the anime craze with 40 new shows coming in 2021

Weebs rejoice! It looks like Netflix really wants a piece of the anime pie. The streaming giant has already curated a large number of anime shows and movies but is looking at expanding that roster with even more content. While we already have stalwarts like Castlevania (review), Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell SAC, along with more mainstream shows like My Hero Academia and Attack on Titan, the company is taking a hands-on approach in acquiring more content. A new report on Bloomberg states that Netflix will release 40 new anime titles this year.

A report on Variety also states that Netflix is adapting Record of Ragnarok, the massively successful manga series in Japan. So, it’s clear that Netflix is not only targeting a western audience but actively seeking out a more balanced range of users. The announcements were made at the Tokyo Anime Expo 2021 in Japan. Talk about walking straight into the mouth of the beast! We also reported that Netflix was actively working with Keanu Reeves to adapt his graphic novel series called BRZRKR into a live-action film as well as anime series. Adding to that, Netflix revealed titles such as Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, Yasuke, and many more.

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness releasing in 2021

Netflix has essentially doubled the number of anime titles on the platform as compared to the previous year. It truly looks like the streaming giant is going all-in on the anime market. With Sony’s acquisition of anime streaming site Crunchyroll for $1.2 billion, it looks like the anime wars have just begun, except this time, it’s two huge corporations facing off against each other. We’re pretty sure there’s a manga of that somewhere out there as well. If you’re an anime fan, you may want to check out our recommendations of the best anime shows on Netflix, right here.

Apple pushes iOS 1442 critical update for iPhone and iPad

Apple has pushed out a critical update for the iPhone and iPad in the form of iOS 14.4.2 and iPadOS 14.4.2 that patches a vulnerability that is being currently, actively exploited. While the update is considered a minor update, the vulnerability it patches is apparently a major one, given that Apple’s pushed out this update less than three weeks after having pushed out iOS 14.4.1.

Apple’s release notes say that this update should be installed by all users with eligible devices. According to the document, the vulnerability allows for “Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to universal cross-site scripting. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.” The update patches the vulnerability on devices ranging from the iPhone 6s all the way to the latest iPhone 12 series.

Interestingly, Apple has also released iOS 12.5.2 and iPadOS 12.5.2 for devices that are not compatible with iOS 14. This includes iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch (6th generation). The iPhone 5s was released way back in 2013, seven years ago. In contrast, while most Android OEMs promise two to three years of security updates, many smartphones never actually end up receiving such updates over their committed timeline. A study had also shown that some Android OEMs were claiming to have pushed a security patch for a particular month, but in reality, that was not the case.

If you’re using an iPhone 5s or newer, or an iPod Touch (6th gen) or any of the iPad devices, you can go to Settings > General > Software Update to get the OTA update. Do ensure your device has 50 percent or more charge, or that it is plugged into a charger through the duration of the update process. As a safety precaution, do ensure to take a backup of your device in case the update gets botched and you need to restore your device.

The band is also expected to come with a Pomodoro Timer. Information circulating the internet suggests that users will be able to control their Xiaomi smart home appliances from the convenience of the watch.

In our review of the Mi Band 5, we said, “The Mi Band 5 is a great choice for those who are starting to become more cognizant of their sedentary lifestyles, and want to get back to a life of some activity. It doesn't try to razzle-dazzle with a boatload of features, but instead, focuses on delivering the right features tuned to work as well as possible. You get to track your walks, runs and even yoga. While we won't recommend it for sleep tracking due to inconsistencies in our testing, for everything else, the Mi Band 5 worked really well”. The new Fire TV remote control has dedicated hotkeys for Netflix, Prime Video, Amazon Music and a dedicated button to bring up your app's library. It also has a button to bring up live TV.

Since the OTT hotkeys are at the bottom of the new Fire TV Stick remote control, the mute button has moved to the left of the volume rocker.
