Meta has been ordered to sell Giphy by UK competition watchdog: Heres Metas response

In a significant decision, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK on Tuesday ordered Meta (formerly Facebook) to sell off online database and search engine Giphy it acquired for $315 million.

The competition watchdog found that Meta's takeover of Giphy could allow it to limit other social media platforms' access to GIFs, making those sites less attractive to users and less competitive.

It also found the deal has removed Giphy as a potential challenger in the UK display advertising market, preventing businesses from benefiting from innovation in this market.

Meta, disappointed by the decision, said it will accept the ruling.

"We are disappointed by the CMA's decision but accept today's ruling as the final word on the matter. We will work closely with the CMA on divesting Giphy," a company spokesperson said in a statement.

"We are grateful to the Giphy team during this uncertain time for their business, and wish them every success. We will continue to evaluate opportunities -- including through acquisition -- to bring innovation and choice to more people in the UK and around the world," the pokesperson added.

The CMA said Meta would be able to increase its already significant market power by denying or limiting other social media platforms' access to Giphy GIFs, thereby pushing people to Meta-owned sites, which already make up 73 per cent of user time spent on social media in the UK.

"It could require Giphy customers, such as TikTok, Twitter and Snapchat, to provide more data from UK users in order to access Giphy GIFs," the watchdog said.

The CMA found that GIFs continue to be an important driver of user engagement on social media platforms, with people making billions of searches globally each month for Giphy GIFs.

"This deal would significantly reduce competition in 2 markets. It has already resulted in the removal of a potential challenger in the UK display ad market, while also giving Meta the ability to further increase its substantial market power in social media," said Stuart McIntosh, Chair of the independent inquiry group.

OnePlus may ditch the Pro moniker this time the top variant could be called OnePlus 11

OnePlus started selling smartphones with the ‘Pro’ moniker in 2019. The OnePlus 7 Pro was the first smartphone to come out with the changed branding. Since then, the company has stuck with the terminology for all its flagship devices, including the OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus 9 Pro, and the latest OnePlus 10 Pro. However, a recent leak claiming that the upcoming OnePlus flagship won’t have the ‘Pro’ moniker in its name has surprised the internet.

OnePlus 10 Pro’s successor won’t be called OnePlus 11 Pro?

According to leaker Max Jambor, the upcoming OnePlus flagship will not be called the OnePlus 11 Pro. Instead, the company may launch it as the ‘OnePlus 11.’ Now that might lead many to think that the smartphone will launch without any ‘Pro’ capabilities. Well, Jambor also shares that the smartphone will retain all the flagship characteristics of the OnePlus 10 Pro, even improve them on some levels, but still, the company wants to call it the OnePlus 11. It could be the starting of a rather simplified naming approach adopted by the company; however, the reason for removing the ‘Pro’ moniker from the OnePlus 11’s name is not apparent at the moment.

The upcoming OnePlus Pro model is called OnePlus 11.

— Max Jambor (@MaxJmb) October 17, 2022 OnePlus 11’s leaked specifications

The name change also raises another question - will the OnePlus 11 carry a ‘Pro’ pricing, or will it be priced like the flagship killers the company sold several years back? As the answer to this question is unavailable, readers must wait until other leaks surface on the internet. For now, we have a decent amount of details regarding the OnePlus 11’s specifications. An Android Authority report suggests that the OnePlus 10 Pro’s successor could come with a 6.7-inch QHD+ OLED display that could support a high refresh rate.

Under the hood, the smartphone could feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, which remains unannounced. Additionally, the OnePlus 11 might be equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 100W wired charging. Last but not least, OnePlus could circle back to the Hasselblad partnership as the OnePlus 11 is touted to feature a triple rear camera system with a 50 MP primary camera, a 48MP ultrawide camera and a 32MP telephoto camera, all tuned by Hasselblad. Nevertheless, none of the details is official now, and enthusiasts will have to wait until OnePlus comes up with an announcement.

Could this be Windows 12 or the Next Valley update from Microsoft

Microsoft is reportedly working on the successor to Windows 11 and it could be called Windows 12. Well, whatever it may be christened as, in the inner circles, it is believed to be known as the Next Valley update of Windows. Now even though the details around the next big Windows update are scanty, a recent spill by the company shows us fresh design elements which could very well be of Windows 12.

Here, have a look:

Is this Windows 12 aka Next Valley update?

An early UI exploration prototype for Windows Next Valley accidentally made a brief cameo during the Ignite keynote yesterday. Here's what I know about it: https://t.co/wbITbZ6215 pic.twitter.com/JEwL075ifR

— Zac Bowden (@zacbowden) October 13, 2022

We got the first look at this new Windows UI during Microsoft's presentation at Ignite 2022 event.

The first thing we noticed was the floating taskbar which looks similar to a macOS dock. It appears different from the traditional Windows taskbar which itself has come a long way since the early days of Windows.

Next, we see the system icons like time and date at the top right corner. Meanwhile, the weather icon is present at the top left corner.

Last but not least, the search bar is also present in the top center bar.

All of these things put the new Windows design far from Windows 11 and closer to the macOS design language.

As per Zac Bowden from Windows Central, this new UI is “representative of the design goals that Microsoft is hoping to achieve with the next version of Windows.”

Windows 11

Now the reason we assume this to be Windows 12 is because of Mr. Bowden’s claim that Microsoft has dropped Windows 11 23H2 update and the company will be returning to a 3-year development cycle.

This forthcoming Windows update could offer a Windows 7-like refinement for Windows 11. Or so is being expected. Let's see.
