Google rolls out Nearby Share: Easily share files from Android phone and Windows PC

Google has launched the Nearby Share for Windows. It can be finally used in the PC for sharing files into your Android smartphone. The beta version of Nearby Share was rolled out some months ago. Over 1.7 million users have downloaded the beta version of Nearby Share and around 50 million files have been shared through it which are mainly pictures and videos, Google said.

Google brings some new features for its Nearby Share for Windows as well. It has added an estimated time feature which calculates and tells you the total time that files will use in transfer. Apart from that, there will be an image preview of the file which you would share in notifications which helps you in checking if the file is correct or not.

As of now, these are some new features which Google has added in the Nearby Share for Windows but in the coming future there will be more upgrades as the tech giant is working with PC manufacturers to implement the Nearby Share in their PCs.

How to transfer files from PC to Android

If you are logged into the same Google account on your PC as your Android device then the transfer could be very easy. Both of the devices should be under 16 feet from each other. The transfer will be accepted automatically on the receiving device.

If the PC and Android device have different google accounts logged in then you need to turn on the PC's WiFi and Bluetooth settings. After that you just need to select or drag the file to the sharing space in Nearby Share.

We used Llama 2 to ask it how its different from ChatGPT: Heres the answer

Llama 2 is the new LLM in the market. Meta launched it today and you can try it now. We have used the AI chatbot and asked it how it compares to ChatGPT. Let’s see what the new ChatGPT rival has to say.

First, let’s see how you can try it out.

Steps to use Llama 2

1. Go to the Llama 2 demo page on the Huggingface website.

2. Scroll down till you see the Demo section and click on the “in this space” hyperlink. This will take you to the Llama2 70B Chatbot. Or else, you can chat within the small chat box in the Demo section.

3. Enter your query or prompt and hit Submit button (or enter button on your keyboard). It can even solve HTML codes.

4. You can click on Retry, Undo, or Clear the prompt/query.

It takes some time to respond. Perhaps, with time, it will improve both in speed and quality of responses.

For now, it looks very basic. But it is fine as it is a demo only.

Still, we decided to take it out for a spin.

We asked what it thinks of ChatGPT and here’s its answer

Llama 2

Before we start, know that Llama 2 doesn’t have personal opinions or beliefs, and if it doesn’t know the answer to any of the questions, it says it will tell you “where you might be able to find the answer”.

Whence asked about ChatGPT, it praised the potential of an LLM-powered chatbot like this and also warns the ethical implications.

Also Read: Google Bard should address these 5 concerns against generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT

It suggests ChatGPT has a wider scope and is capable of “generating coherent and contextually relevant text, especially when given a prompt that requires a creative or imaginative response”.

However, as a smaller model, it claims to be “able to respond faster and can handle more conversational dialogue”. It says it can be more “empathetic and emotive” in its responses.

Truecaller Assistant: AI can now take calls on your behalf

Truecaller has now finally announced its AI-based assistant in India. The Truecaller Assistant was first introduced in the United States and Australia a while back. Notably, this feature is available for Android users for now and yet to be available for iOS users. This AI-based assistant helps you so many things like ignoring spam calls, attending important calls and much more. The Truecaller Assistant uses the machine learning, speech-to-text, and natural language processing technologies for the call-screening which can be used against spam and fraud calls.

Truecaller Assistant is basically your interactive assistant for the calls which you don’t want to pick or you can’t pick up. Let me tell you how the Truecaller Assistant works.

Suppose someone calls and you can’t pick up. Then your AI-based friend will step in and talk on your behalf. It will ask the caller the purpose of the call and turn the conversation into text using the voice-to-text technology. So, when the caller and the Assistant are talking, you will be able to see who is talking and why. Then if the purpose of the caller concerns you, you can pick the call otherwise you can even mark it as spam.

Truecaller Assistant

The Truecaller Assistant will start the conversation with the caller by saying ‘Hi, the person you’re calling is using a screening service, may I ask who it is? And then the purpose.’

You can choose from a total of 5 different options of voices, both male and female while setting up Truecaller Assistant. It also offers speech-to-text technology. The Assistant even has a feature to comprehend multiple languages including but not limited to English and Hindi. Further, you can even customise the message that the Truecaller Assistant will deliver while answering calls from unknown numbers. It doesn’t end here, you can even access the recording of the screen so that you can review the call information later.

AI technology being used in every other website and application now is a good thing or a bad thing? Well I must say that AI is making things way easier for us but the amount of data it is collecting from everyone is huge, should it be in their servers or not.

Threads updates to add 7 features and subtract some bugs: Is it any more interesting

Threads on iOS has got a new update and although the App Store changelog is a generic line about bug fixes, there are some new features on the app. Let’s have a look and see if the app experience has improved and if it could retain users.

New Threads features

1. Translations

Using the Instagram translation engine, Threads will show its users the English translations for foreign languages. You just have to tap on the translation icon in the bottom right corner and it will do the trick in a jiff using AI.

2. Follows tab on activity feed

The activity feed is the section which shows the people who followed you, who accepted your follow request, and reactions to your posts. It appears with the Heart icon on the bottom menu. Now in this section, you also have a Follows tab that shows you just the list of people who you follow and who followed you.

Also Read: Threads is different from Twitter and that is both a good and bad thing

3. Subscribe to unfollowed users

This probably gives you their post updates even though you have unfollowed them.

Some other features like following + on thread replies page, tappable reposter label, and the ability to open the IG followers list aren’t accessible on our end at the moment. As Instagram software engineer Cameron Roth says, some of these features may take some time before appearing for all users. He says these are server-side changes that can “take a while to fully release”.

However, it is not just about new features. Rather in this update, Threads for iOS gets fixes for some crashes, binary size cuts, and bugs. Notably, the loading and scrolling speeds have also been improved.

Post by @zuck View on Threads

Threads, when it launched, was sort of an experimental project within Meta and apparently had only 12 engineers. However, the team seems to have failed to estimate the sudden influx of users from Instagram and the expectations that come with it. Of late there have been reports of deteriorating Threads usage and the new update seems to be a way to show the company is working to improve things. Let’s see if it changes enough things to attract new users as well as users who left.

Also Read: Threads isn’t threading enough and here is why we think it is so

For now, the changes are very minor. They may have subtle improvements to the current users’ experience but they are not going to lure people, both new and who stopped using it after the initial fad. I hope Meta spruces up its ranking algorithm and also adds features that people have been asking for. Then, maybe then, we feel it stands a chance to be the next big microblogging website.

Samsung chief teases everything that will be unpacked on the big July 26 event

Samsung Mobile head TM Roh has hinted at the products that we could get to see at the Galaxy Unpacked event. This includes the new Samsung foldables, wearables, and tablets. So, we may not see a new regular phone, laptop, or anything other than the things he mentioned.

But, since the things he talks about are more than enough to make this event star-studded, no complaints. Moreover, we know a fair bit about these products. Come on, have a look.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023: What to expect

He starts the blog by talking about innovative design and then highlights how the company has “ raised the standards for foldable smartphone ergonomics”. He emboldens how the upcoming foldables are thinner and lighter than the predecessors.

Samsung foldables are not necessarily bestowed with the latest and greatest specs since design takes priority.

Samsung

Still, the book-shaped Galaxy Z Fold 5 5G could be coming with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset, UFS 4.0 storage, a new 12MP telephoto camera, and updated connectivity options like WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3.

Samsung Mobile

The Z Flip 5, meanwhile, is expected to come with a bigger cover screen and software features utilising that enlarged space. It is said to benefit from the same Snapdragon chip as the Fold 5. It could be very similar to its precursor in other areas.

Both phones are likely to get better hinge mechanisms, which should be able to close them flatter and when opened the crease is likely to be more concealed.
