MWC 2019: Microsoft unveils HoloLens 2

Highlights: Microsoft announced HoloLens 2 at MWC HoloLens is the company's pair of mixed reality smartglasses It will sell for $3,500 (Rs 2,50,000 approx)   News from this year’s Mobile World Congress at Barcelona, Spain continues to pour in at a steady pace. Microsoft has announced HoloLens 2, the second iteration of its mixed reality smartglasses. The press event was hosted by Julia White, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft Azure, Alex Kipman, Technical Engineer, and Satya Nadella, the company’s CEO. HoloLens 2 replaces the HoloLens that was released in 2016. The new device comes with several improvements. According to a blog post published by Microsoft, immersion has improved in the new HoloLens 2. The company has more than doubled the field of view while retaining the industry-standard 47 pixels per degree of sight. The device consists of a new display that’s more sophisticated technically but draws lesser power. Underpinning the device are a new time-of-flight sensor, inbuilt AI and semantic understanding logic, and eye-tracking sensors. HoloLens 2 enables direct manipulation of holograms with real-life instinctual interactions. Log-ins happen with the help of Windows Hello integration. According to Microsoft, comfort too has improved thanks to the use of light carbon-fibre material and a new mechanism for wearing it without readjusting. A new dial-in fit system maked the device more comfortable to wear for longer hours. The American software corporation believes that HoloLens 2 becomes more capable when combined with existing and new Azure services. It’s also supplemented by Microsoft’s mixed reality applications like Dynamics 365, Remote Assist, Dynamics 365 Layout, and the new Dynamics 365 Guides applications. “We are entering a new era of computing, one in which the digital world goes beyond two-dimensional screens and enters the three-dimensional world. This new collaborative computing era will empower us all to achieve more, break boundaries and work together with greater ease and immediacy in 3D,” wrote White in her official blog post. The Microsoft HoloLens 2 will ship later this year at a price of $3,500 (Rs, 2,50,000) in the US, Japan, China, Germany, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Australia, and New Zealand but is available for pre-order starting now.   Related Read: All the foldable smartphones announced so far at MWC 2019

OnePlus 5G prototype showcased at MWC 2019

Highlights OnePlus 5G prototype showed off at MWC OnePlus 5G prototype used to demo cloud gaming OnePlus 5G Prototype yet to be announced Mobile World Congress this year has barely begun and we’ve already been treated to a host of amazing announcements. While foldable phones seem to be the flavour of the season, this year’s MWC also sees 5G smartphones finally being announced, with working models put on display. Not one to be left out, OnePlus has put on display its prototype 5G smartphone at the Qualcomm booth. The OnePlus 5G prototype is housed within a protective casing in addition to the phone itself being covered up with a case, with only the display being visible. This, the company says, has been done because the device has not yet been announced, so the company has taken steps to prevent the device’s design from leaking out. We have, however, already been treated to a few leaks about the OnePlus 7’s possible design. OnePlus 5G Prototype shown off at MWC 2019 In addition to the phone being available on display, OnePlus and Qualcomm have also set up a 5G demo at the booth for showcasing cloud gaming over 5G. “At Qualcomm Technologies’ booth, OnePlus simulated a futuristic setting of 5G cloud gaming where players would only need a smartphone and a gamepad. Through the powerful capabilities of cloud processing as well as the throughput and responsiveness of 5G, players can play large sized games online that are generally only playable after downloading onto the PC first. Utilizing Snapdragon elite gaming features and optimizations, players were able to experience high definition and low latency cloud gaming like never before.” OnePlus had announced last year that in 2019, the company would release a 5G enabled smartphone. Speculation has been that the upcoming OnePlus 7 (if it would be called that) could be 5G enabled, but the company, so far, has denied that claim. 5G is expected to be a transformative technology not just for smartphones, but also for IoT and any other industry devices that rely on connectivity. One industry that could get a significant boost is gaming, as 5G networks are high bandwidth, low latency networks. This combination could allow gamers to play games on their phone without having to download it on their phones. At the very least, we can expect improved online multi-player experiences. However, these improvements would be available to any smartphone that is 5G enabled, and not just OnePlus’s device. OnePlus is yet to officially reveal their next flagship, at which point, we will officially know whether it will come with 5G or not. Related Reads: MWC 2019: Everything Lenovo launched this year
