Turing Award with 1 million prize won by three pioneers in Artificial Intelligence

Highlights: Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun awarded the Turing Award. The three researchers have been working and contributing to the field for more than 30 years.  They identified new applications of neural networks and demonstrated their practical advantages. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has announced the winners of 2018 Turing Award, which is also known as the “Nobel Prize of computing”. This time, the three ‘godfathers of AI,’ Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun are sharing the Turing Award “for conceptual and engineering breakthroughs that have made deep neural networks a critical component of computing.” The trio worked independently and together to develop conceptual foundations for the field. Via experiments, they identified new applications of neural networks and demonstrated their practical advantages. As we know, there are very few fields that are untouched by deep learning, neural networking and AI-based applications.  Bengio is a professor at the University of Montreal and Scientific Director at Mila, Quebec’s Artificial Intelligence Institute. Hinton is VP and Engineering Fellow of Google, Chief Scientific Adviser of The Vector Institute, and University Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto. LeCun is a professor at New York University and VP and Chief AI Scientist at Facebook. The Turing Award received by them also carries a $1 million prize, with financial support provided by Google. The award is named after the brilliant mathematician and scientist from Britain who laid the groundwork for modern computing.  "Deep neural networks are responsible for some of the greatest advances in modern computer science, helping make substantial progress on long-standing problems in computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language understanding,” says Jeff Dean, Google Senior Fellow and SVP, Google AI. “At the heart of this progress are fundamental techniques developed starting more than 30 years ago by this year's Turing Award winners, Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun. By dramatically improving the ability of computers to make sense of the world, deep neural networks are changing not just the field of computing, but nearly every field of science and human endeavor." The concept of using neural networks so that computers are able to recognise patterns was introduced in the 1980s. However, LeCun, Hinton and Bengio were among a small group of researchers who remained committed to the development of the technology by the early 2000s. Over a period of 30 years, the researchers are said to have developed the techniques that led to accelerated growth in the field of computer vision, speech recognition and machine translation. Lenovo Z6 Pro with 100MP launching in April: Executive

Highlights: Lenovo Z6 Pro launching in April. The phone could come with 100MP camera. It could be lenovo’s first phone with 5G capability.   Earlier this week, Chang Cheng, Vice President of Lenovo Group, posted on Weibo that the company would launch the Lenovo Z6 Pro phone on March 26, however, it didn’t show up. In the latest post, the executive has announced that the phone will launch in April. He also teased that the phone will come with a “billion level pixels”, hinting that it could come with a 100MP camera, and could become the first company to launch such phone. The USP of the phone is a ‘Hyper Vision’ camera sensor to record ‘Hyper Videos’. Lenovo hasn’t really detailed what this technology does but it has been hyped in the media circles. This is not the first time that the launch has been postponed. It was earlier reported that the phone would make an appearance at MWC 2019 in Barcelona, but it didn’t and the event was headlined by foldable devices and 5G provided by Qualcomm’s X50 modem. Further, Qualcomm recently told Digit that it is expecting smartphone with 100MP cameras later this year. According to Judd Heape, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm, camera sensor vendors are already working on higher megapixel sensors due to launch later this year. He said that Qualcomm is expecting camera sensors a little above 100-megapixels to hit the market later this year, and 2020 will see the megapixel count jump to the mid-100s. Now coming to the specs of the Z6 Pro, it is being reported that the phone will carry the Snapdragon 855 processor and the X50 modem for 5G capabilities. For those who don’t know, Lenovo was the first company to launch a phone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, however, the phone did not have the 5G modem. Called the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT, it is also the first phone ever to feature a 12GB RAM. Related Read: Qualcomm adds support for 192MP camera sensors in 6-series, 7-series and8-series chipsets

13 Upcoming Android and iOS games you should look forward to in 2019

The gaming hardware debate has traditionally centered around PC versus console gaming. In the past year , that dynamic has changed dramatically to include the little device that sits in your pocket - the smartphone. With the processing and graphical prowess of smartphones reaching new heights, gaming has emerged one of the biggest use cases for the hadheld. Some smartphones can run Fortnite at an impressive visual fidelity whereas other games like PUBG ensure multiple graphical settings to cater to a wide variety of smartphones. Even at an event like E3 2018, where the focus is mostly on consoles, we saw some publishers shift focus to the smartphone gaming segment. Yes, we are looking at you Command and Conquer Rivals! If you are one that is tiptoeing into the world of gaming and aren't ready to drop the cash needed to get into console or PC gaming, then you have come to the right place. Here are all the new and upcoming mobile games that you should be paying attention to if the smartphone is your weapon of choice. Call of Duty: Mobile A franchise that has defined the first person shooter genre on consoles and the PC is coming to the smartphone. Call of Duty: Mobile for the smartphone was announced at GDC 2019 at the Unity press briefing and we hear the game will launch in India in November. The game is not being developed by veteran Call of Duty developers, but by the developers behind the uber-successful PUBG Mobile - Tencent. Call of Duty: Mobile will be a free to play game and you can pre-register for the game now. It will run on the Unity Engine.  The Elder Scrolls: Blades Another PC and console franchise making its way to the smartphone is the Elder Scrolls. Titled The Elders Scroll: Blades, the game has been made available for early access today. The Elders Scroll: Blades is expected to launch in 2019, but there is no information on a concrete launch date. In the game, players will be able to embark upon quests, customize their city, restoring it to greatness. The game is free to play with in-app purchases.  Diablo Immortal Bringing a legendary PC role-playing game to a smartphone may have been met with some raised eyebrows. However, the gameplay trailer of Diablo Immortal looks promising and we are looking forward to embarking on this adventure. Diablo Immortal is a mobile Massively Multiplayer Online Action RPG (MMOARPG) developed by Blizzard Entertainment in partnership with NetEase. The game will launch on Android and iOS devices. There is no concrete release date but pre-registration for the game is open. Project Cars GO Gamevil and Slightly Mad Studios are joining forces to bring Project Cars Go to Android devices. On consoles, Project Cars has been a realistic racing simulation game and we think it will try to replicate the same formula on the smartphone. It isn’t clear whether the game will be free or paid and there is no release window for the game either.  Payday: Crime War Payday: Crime War is coming to Android and iOS devices. The official website of the game reads, “For the first time ever in the PAYDAY universe, choose either between heisters or cops, and face off with style in this co-op multiplayer PvP experience! Challenge your enemies in iconic locations from the First World Bank to the Jewelry Store. Unlock upgrades and even more powerful gear along your path to improve your loadout and gain the winning edge! Grab your friends and abide the law or plan the perfect heist.” There is no information on a launch date for the game but it is speculated to launch in 2019 and it isn't clear whether the game will be free to play or a paid game.  Dead Cells The listing of Dead Cells has been removed from the Play Store, but the fact that the game appeared on a mobile platform store has us excited. Maybe the developers are toying with the idea of getting the dungeon crawler to smartphones, maybe it isn’t ready yet. However, the fact that a game like Dead Cells may come to the mobile platform has us excited. H1Z1 H1Z1, apart from sounding like a virus is a Battle Royale game. The game has seen quite a bit of traction on the PS4. If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then we will soon see a mobile version of H1Z1. If this is true, then we can gear up for another addition to the world of Battle Royale games on smartphones.   Human: Fall Flat Human: Fall Flat released for the PC back in 2016, and launched for consoles in 2017. The game is expected to hit mobile devices as well, but there is no concrete release date for the game. Human: Fall Flat is a physics-based puzzle game where players need to solve puzzles. You can bend things, quite literally, but will need to adhere to the laws of physics to get to the next level. If you fall flat in the process, you are doing something right.  Mario Kart Tour One of Nintendo’s biggest franchises has already made its way to the smartphone - Mario. Now Mario is bringing his friends and another Nintendo franchise to the mobile device. Called Mario Kart Tour, the game is expected to launch in the summer of 2019. No footage of the game is available and Nintendo is playing this one close to the chest. Nonetheless, we are eagerly waiting to take on our friends in a Kart Race with our favourite characters from the world of Mario on our smartphones.    The checkered flag has been raised and the finish line is near. A new mobile application is now in development: Mario Kart Tour! #MarioKartTour Releasing in the fiscal year ending in March 2019. pic.twitter.com/8GIyR7ZM4z — Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) February 1, 2018   Blade Runner Nexus The cyberpunk Blade Runner movies are absolutely incredible be it the visual representation, musical score or the story arc. We are still waiting on a game that can replicate the world of Cyberpunk. For mobile gamers, however, there is a Blade Runner game to look forward to. The game appears to be a lot like Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes or Marvel Strike Force. You can check out the game on the Google Play Store.  Harry Potter: Wizards Unite An augmented reality game inspired by the wizarding world Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is up for pre-registration. The Google Play listing of the game says “In Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, players will take on the role of a new recruit of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force working to solve the mystery of the Calamity. Players will be able to explore their real-world neighbourhoods and cities to discover mysterious artefacts, cast spells, and encounter fantastic beasts and iconic characters along the way”. Since the developers behind the Harry Potter: Wizards Unite are the masterminds behind the AR success, Pokemon Go, our expectations are high for this adventure.  Vitality In development by the minds behind PUBG Mobile, Vitality is a zombie action survival game. Vitality is just the code name and not the final name of the game. The game looks like a love child of Days Gone and Left for Dead and if it is intended to be a multiplayer Zombie shooter, we hope it mimics the latter of the 2. There is no information on a release date for the game. Land Next Lands Next looks to be an Apex Legends like PvPP game but set in a classic Chinese setting. The game looks like it will blend old with new, giving players classic settings merged with modern gunplay. Reminds me a lot of The Order 1886. Towards the end of the video of the game, we have an Assassins Creed like eagle soaring through the sky. If the game is as interesting as its trailer and follows the team based battle presented in Apex Legends, we may just have an immersive game in our hands. Scientists prepare to drill for worlds oldest ice core in Antarctica: Report

Highlights: The Beyond EPICA project aims to drill 2.75 kilometres into the earth in Antarctica. Scientists from Europe expect to extract an ancient ice core. They believe it will help us learn more about the planet's ancient climate.   The average borewell in India is about 600 feet deep, with the deepest one going up to about 1,000 feet. But that’s nothing compared to what a team of scientists has planned for next year in Antarctica. According to a recent article by Nature, the Beyond EPICA project aims to drill 2.75 kilometres into the earth in search of the world’s oldest ice core. The core is expected to contain ice that’s at least 1.5 million years old, which is key to finding out information about the planet’s ancient climate. The team consists of a dozen groups of scientists from ten European countries. Some of them have already spent the last two years in Antarctica getting the lay of the land before the scheduled drill in June 2020. They plan to set up camp in an area in East Antarctica called Little Dome C, which is 3.2 kilometres above main sea level. Dome C is one of the coldest places on the planet. Temperatures rarely rise above -25 degrees Celsius even in summer. In winter, the mercury hits -80 degrees Celsius. “This iconic project will help us better understand climate change in the past and to come,” commented Carlo Barbante, a climate researcher at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice in Italy and at the National Research Council of Italy. “We’re very confident that the bottommost 300 metres have the missing climate information that we want to find.” The French-Italian Concordia station, which is about 40 kilometres northeast of the planned drilling site, will reportedly provide logistical and medical support throughout the five-year project. By drilling to the bottom of an ice sheet that is 2.75 kilometres thick, the European scientists hope to extract a core containing ancient ice. This ice has been left undisturbed and untouched for roughly 1.5 million years, making it the oldest thing to be extracted from the planet’s interior surface. The Beyond EPICA project is expected to be funded with about $12.5 million in grants by the European Commission and start in June next year.
