Redmi Note 8 rumour roundup: Everything we know about the phone so far

Back in February this year, Redmi launched its Note 7 series of smartphones in India. The series consisted of the Redmi Note 7 and the Redmi Note 7 Pro and now, the company is gearing up to launch the Redmi Note 8 series of handsets. The Redmi Note 8 lineup is expected to consist of a standard Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro handsets. However, ahead of the official announcement, which is supposed to take place on August 29, the company has been steadily revealing some key specifications of two smartphones, along with their design. Here’s a roundup of what we know so far about the handsets.

Design

Redmi has been changing things up with its new smartphones, in terms of design. For example, the Redmi K20 and K20 Pro feature a gradient finish. The company might not be going too far for the Redmi Note 8 but as per the images showcased by the company, the rear panel on the upcoming phones could be announced solid colour options, without any gradienáš or pattern. A leaked render of the phone also reiterates the company’s apparent design choice.

The Redmi Note 8 series of handsets will also come equipped with quad cameras on the back. On the Redmi Note 8, the four sensors are stacked vertically on the upper left corner, on the rear. On the Redmi Note 8 Pro, three sensors are centrally placed and vertically stacked, while the fourth sensor sits on the side with an LED flash.

Processor

The Redmi Note 8 is confirmed to launch running on ášhe Snapdragon 665 SoC, while the Redmi Note 8 Pro will be running on Mediatek’s Helio G90T SoC. This means that the Redmi Note 8 will be using the same processor as the Xiaomi Mi A3. The octa-core Snapdragon 665 can be clocked to touch speeds of up to 2GHz and it features Qualcomm Kryo 260 CPU with a 64-bit architecture. The processor supports up to 48MP single camera and comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology.

The Mediatek Helio G90T processor on the Redmi Note 8 Pro suggests that the handset could be marketed as a gaming phone. The octa-core 64-bit CPU features Arm Cortex-A55 and  Arm Cortex-A76 cores and features Arm Mali-G76 3EEMC4 GPU. The CPU has a max frequency of 2.05GHz. For optics, the SoC supports 24MP+16MP,  48MP,  and 64MP sensor configurations.

Cameras

We already know that the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro will come equipped with a quad-rear camera setup. Additionally, the smartphone manufacturer has confirmed that the Redmi Note 8 Pro will sport a 64MP camera sensor, which is speculated to be the new Samsung ISOCELL GM2 sensor. On the other hand, the Redmi Note 8 will feature a 48MP main camera, which is speculated to be the Sony IMX586 sensor. In addition, it will come with a wide-angle lens camera, a macro lens camera, and a depth-of-field sensor.

Expected price

Redmi just confirmed that the Redmi Note 8 will be priced in the same range as the Redmi Note 7 that was launched in China. The Redmi Note 8 is said to be priced under 1000 Yuan (Rs 10,000.approx).

Apple and Samsung are being sued in the US because of high radio-frequency radiation

It looks like Apple and Samsung might be in a bit of trouble in the US. The two tech giants were sued because of a report published by The Chicago Tribune where a team of researchers found that the radio-frequency radiation exposure from devices released by the two companies was over the legal safety limit. This is a cause for concern for a lot of people. Currently, in this age of fear and paranoia, this news comes a huge blow to the two tech giants.

The class-action lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. It claims that the radiation emitted by Samsung and Apple devices exceeded the legal limits set by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). 3 Apple devices, the iPhone 7 Plus. iPhone 8 and, iPhone X, were singled out. On Samsung’s side, the Galaxy S8 and Note8 were both on the chopping block.

Heading over the investigative report by the Chicago Tribune, the report said that, “radio-frequency radiation exposure from the iPhone 7 measured over the legal safety limit and more than double against what Apple had reported to federal regulators from its own testing”.

The court filing also mentioned that, “Numerous recent scientific publications, supported by hundreds of scientists worldwide, have shown that RF radiation exposure affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines,”.

The lawsuit also added that, “Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders and negative impacts on general well-being in humans,”.

The issue seems to be that Apple “covered up any risks by misrepresenting the safety of their smartphones”.

Who knows where this lawsuit is heading, but if it actually does pan out, it might spell huge trouble for the two tech giants.

Google Nest Hub smart display launched in India at Rs 9,999

As predicted by popular leakster Ishan Agarwal earlier this month, Google has launched the Nest Hub in India at a price of Rs 9,999. Originally launched last year in global markets as the Home Hub, the Nest Hub is one of Google’s newest smart displays. Like the other smart displays and smart speakers sold by Google, the Nest Hub supports Google Assistant, the California-based tech giant’s voice command-based virtual assistant. The Google Nest Hub is currently available on Flipkart in two colour options: Chalk and Charcoal.

The Google Nest Hub is an internet-dependent device that is designed to be placed in the user’s home and used through touch inputs and voice commands. It sports a 7-inch touchscreen display and an internal speaker. The Nest Hub does not come with a camera for privacy reasons. In comparison, the Nest Hub’s direct competitor, the Amazon Echo Show 5, sports a 1MP camera along with a physical privacy slider. While the Echo Show 5 employs Amazon Alexa for voice-based interactions with the user, the Nest Hub uses Google Assistant.

With the help of the Google Home app, which is available for Android and iOS devices, the Google Nest Hub is capable of interacting with smart home devices, including lights, fans, locks, heaters, air conditioners, etc. For example, a Nest Hub user could ask for the bedroom lights to be dimmed using only their voice. It also comes with a “Routines” feature, which allows the user to programme the device with a list of commands. For example, saying “Good morning” could trigger the smart display to report the current news and weather.

Google has chosen to price the Nest Hub smart display at Rs 9,999. In comparison, the Amazon Echo Show 5 costs Rs 8,999. In the US, the Google Nest Hub sells for $99.99 (Rs 7,225 approx) alongside the bigger Nest Hub Max smart display, which sports a 10-inch touchscreen display, an inbuilt woofer, and a 6.5MP camera. Recent reports say Google plans to launch the Nest Hub Max in India soon but we have yet to receive an official word from Google. In the meantime, feel free to read our review of the Amazon Echo Show 5.

Microsoft offers workaround for faulty Windows 10 patch that handicaps Bluetooth speaker connectivity

Windows is not new to seeing faulty patches from time to time and neither are its users. The latest patch for Windows 10, according to a Windows support document, prevents the operating system from working with Bluetooth speakers. Fortunately, while the Redmond-based company works on a permanent solution, there’s a workaround for those of you who rely heavily on wireless speakers/headphones connected through Bluetooth.

Let’s first take a closer look at the problem at hand. Microsoft says that the Bluetooth connectivity issue exists in update 4505903 of Windows 10, version 1903, which is, of course, the latest “Windows 10 May 2019 Update” for the operating system. Microsoft then goes on to say that you may experience one of the following symptoms: speaker can’t connect to Windows, speaker connects but delivers poor quality sound, speaker connects but sound continues to play through the PC’s internal speaker.

If you’re seeing a yellow triangle icon with an exclamation mark in it appear against an entry in Sound, video and game controllers for Microsoft Bluetooth A2dp Source in Device Manager, your device is one of the many that is affected by the new faulty patch. While Microsoft hasn’t mentioned anything about fixing the problem in a future update, it has offered a workaround for those who are eager to get an external speaker going.

Microsoft wants you to run the System File Checker (SFC.exe) tool to fix the problem temporarily. You can do this by opening Command Prompt (cmd.exe) with administrative authority. In other words, find Command Prompt under Windows System in the Start menu, right-click it and select Run as administrator. In the prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. When the process is over, restart your PC and try your luck. You should be able to connect to a Bluetooth speaker after this. If you still can’t, you can look for answers shown by our good friend, Google.
