iPhone 15 rumour: Data transfer speed will be capped to slower USB 20 only

The Apple iPhone 15 launch is just around the corner and like every year, the hype around the new iPhone models is through the roof. This year, we will finally see a type-C charging port on Apple iPhones as per the rumours. We had recently reported that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models may come with Thunderbolt support with type-C. Now, a report has hinted of new iPhone 15 models being limited to USB 2.0 speeds.

As per researcher Majin Bu on Twitter, the new iPhone 15 USB type-C cable will be 1.6 metres long and will have 16 pins, along with support for USB 2.0 20V3A, which limits the data transfer speeds to a rate of 480Mbps. If true, this will mean that the data transfer won't be any faster on the new iPhones despite having a new charging connector. The researcher has also claimed that the cables are now longer (1.6m) and thicker, which means they will be more durable.

Now, while this report is contradictory to the previous rumours of some iPhone 15 models coming with Thunderbolt capability. However, there are a few possible scenarios. First, Apple may be limiting the vanilla iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models to USB 2.0 speeds, while bringing Thunderbolt capabilities to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, allowing the "Pro" models to enjoy up to 40Gbps data transfer speeds.

This is similar to Apple's strategy with the iPad lineup. For example, the new iPad Pro models come with Thunderbolt, while the iPad Air has USB-C 3.1 standard, and the 10th generation iPad is still on USB 2.0 even with the USB-C port. With type-C charging, Apple iPhones are now said to support up to 35W fast charging, as reported earlier. Further, we may also see a Dynamic Island on both the iPhone 15 vanilla and iPhone 15 Pro models.

Recently, we had gotten our first look at how the new charging cable from Apple may look like. Leaked images online hint at a longer, braided USB-C to USB-C cable that may also match the colour of the iPhone. We have seen similar type-C cables for the Apple iPad previously, but with the iPhone, the company may go a step ahead to match the cable with the colour of the smartphone.

iPhone 15

As per a report by 9to5Mac, we will have to wait a lot longer for the iPhone 15 Pro Max variant. And the reason behind it ? Rumours are that the image sensor might not be ready yet. Sony, Apple’s main camera part supplier, could be struggling to deliver the main sensor for iPhone 15 Pro Max.

So, earlier reports suggested that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will see a camera upgrade, and will come with a periscope lens for greater optical zoom. However, this might be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max variant. And since there could be a possible delay in the delivery of sensors, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will have a later sale date.

This is not a first. Earlier also certain iPhones went on sale later because of manufacturing issues. Speaking of the iPhone 14 series, the iPhone 14 Plus phones went on sale later than the other phones in this series.
