Qualcomms upcoming flagship chipsets benchmark scores cant even match up to last years A11 Bionic
The next Qualcomm flagship SoC is still some time away, but that didn’t stop Royole from unveiling the FlexPai foldable smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8150 on Thursday. The chipset is based on a 7nm manufacturing processor, same as the new HiSilicon Kirin 980 and the Apple 12 Bionic. Now, benchmark results have started to pour in on the internet and by the looks of it, the new Snapdragon 8150 is definitely faster than the current flagship Snapdragon 845 as well as the Kirin 980 on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. But it isn’t anywhere close to the Apple's A12 Bionic on the iPhone XS Max or even the new A12X Bionic on the iPad Pro. Some reviewers managed to run Geekbench’s Single-core and Multi-core benchmark tests on the new Snapdragon chip which is why they surfaced on the benchmark’s leaderboards. The Geekbench test reveals the raw CPU performance of the chipsets and the results often corroborate to the actual performance of the device the chipset powers. Here’s how the Snapdragon 8150 compares against its peers: Geekbench Single-core: Apple iPad Pro 12.9 powered by A12X Bionic: 5,020 Apple iPhone XS Max powered by A12 Bionic: 4,823 Apple iPhone X powered A11 Bionic: 4,256 Huawei Mate 20 Pro powered by Kirin 980: 3,291 Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150: 3,181 Google Pixel 3 XL powered by Snapdragon 845: 2,318 Geekbench Multi-core: Apple iPad Pro 12.9 powered by A12X Bionic: 18,217 Apple iPhone XS Max powered by A12 Bionic: 11,472 Apple iPhone X powered A11 Bionic: 10,215 Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150: 10,084 Huawei Mate 20 Pro powered by Kirin 980: 9,712 Google Pixel 3 XL powered by Snapdragon 845: 8,439 As you can see, the upcoming Qualcomm 8150 is definitely faster than the Snapdragon 845, and it pips the Mate 20 Pro powered by the Kirin 980 in multi-core performance, but in single-core, Huawei takes the lead. Even more interesting is the fact that the Snapdragon 8150 is still slower than last year’s Apple A11 Bionic on the iPhone X. The lead Apple has in terms of its chipset’s performance is clearly an indication of Apple planning on using ARM chipsets to power Mac devices, news about which, broke last year. According to MacRumors, the 2018 iPad Pro is apparently quite close to the performance of the 2018 MacBook Pro with Intel Core i7 processor with higher single-core performance. However, it’s one thing to run iOS on an ARM chipset and running a full-fledged MacOS on it. The performance is likely to be lower than what you get on the iPad Pro because the instruction set is much different and more intense. The final results are also unclear considering this is just one benchmark. The full picture can only be seen after running a bevy of such tests.

Google Home devices now talk in Hindi
There’s good news for you if you own a Google Home smart speaker and the preferred language on your smartphone is Hindi. According to a blog post by Google, its popular virtual assistant, Google Assistant now understands Hindi on Google Home devices, which means you can say ‘OK, Google’ to trigger the assistant and then ask a question in Hindi. The response from Google Assistant will also be in Hindi. The new feature works on Google Home and Google Home Mini. There’s some setup you’ll have to do before you go asking Google Assistant to tell you jokes in Hindi. You’ll have to open the Google Home app on your smartphone, click on the Account icon on the lower right corner and select Settings. Then go to the Assistant tab and select Languages. Click on ‘Add a language’. Select "Hindi (Bharat)" (written in Devanagari) as the first language in the list and that’s it; you’re all set to converse with your Google Home smart speaker in Hindi. With Google Home’s language is set to Hindi, you should be able to ask Google Home the same questions you could in English before, in Hindi. Google Home should even understand commands to connect to other smart devices like lights and air purifiers. The smart speaker should be able to turn on and off connected devices with a single command in Hindi. Like in English, Google Home will be able to give you information about your day, including weather forecasts, calendar appointment details, and news briefs from a source of your choice. This new language pack availability on Google Home comes eight months after Google rolled out the Hindi language pack for Google Assistant on Android and iOS devices. Purvi Shah, the Technical Program Manager for Assistant had commented back in March, “Google Assistant is truly Indian, it’s your helpful dost that speaks our language and understands the things you care about, from finding biryani recipes, to pulling up the latest cricket score, or finding directions to the nearest ATM." Here is a full list of commands you can try with your Hindi-speaking Google Home speaker.

Apple announces Vintage Repair Program to fix old iPhones and Macs
Apple has announced a Vintage Repair Program for older devices which will extend the ‘end-of-life’ date for many of Apple’s older products. The program will at first include very limited devices, but according to sources, other devices will be added over time. At launch, the program will include only the following devices from Apple. iPhone 5 (GSM/CDMA) MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2012) MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012) iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) – US and Turkey only iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) – US and Turkey only On November 30, Apple is said to include more devices into the Vintage Program like the iPhone 4s and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012) followed by the MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013), MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac Pro (Mid 2012), and iPhone 5 (GSM) on December, 30. The Vintage program means that devices which have been labelled by Apple as Vintage and Obsolete will now once again receive service, on some conditions. The few caveats to the program are that service will only be offered based on availability of the part for the device in question. If a part is not available, service will be denied. In essence, your device being a part of the Vintage Program does not guarantee that you will be able to get service for it.
