Asus ROG Phone accessories: Everything you need to know

Asus India today finally announced that the much-awaited ROG phone which will go on sale exclusively on Flipkart. The ROG phone is a product of Asus’s gaming division which creates all of Asus’s gamer-centric devices such as laptops, keyboards, mice etc. The phone is apparently a result of two years’ worth of engineering. Unlike other smartphone brands who have also created gaming phones, the approach taken by Asus is a little different. They have also created an entire eco-system of gaming accessories to compliment the ROG phone and hence, the engineering goal was to create something cohesive. We spent a significant amount of time with the phone and its accessories and you can read our first impressions of the phone and its accessories here. Of all the accessories that go with the ROG phone, not all of them are coming to India. Here’s what you can buy here. The Asus ROG Phone Of course, the phone itself is going to be available exclusively on Flipkart starting today. In the box, you will get the phone and the aero-active cooler, which is an essential component of the experience. The cooler also adds a USB-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack to the bottom side of the phone (When held in landscape mode) so as to eliminate the hassle of cables sticking into your hands. The cooler also comes with Aura Sync, so you can get your RGB swag on. Aero-Active Cooler with Aura Sync lighting Additional 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C port Aeor-Active cooler is included in the box TwinView Dock The TwinView dock is designed for the game streamer, allowing the player to stream their game and also monitor the live feed, all at the same time. This happens thanks to an additional OLED screen that is built into the bottom flap of the dock and the phone itself snaps into the top lid. You also get additional trigger buttons which should give players a competitive advantage in some games. We used the dock to play PubG and while it took a little getting used to, the controls did become like second nature. Console gamers will especially relate. The TwinView Dock which features the same display as the ROG phone and an additional 6000mAh battery will cost Rs 21,999 in India and is the most expensive of the accessories. TwinView dock allows game streamers unprecedented flexibility The added triggers on the TwinView dock helps with FPS games GameVice GameVice is another controller for the ROG phone, but instead of being a heavy-duty box, it’s just two joysticks held together by a stretchable material. You stretch the joysticks apart and they snap onto either side of the phone, using its USB-C port. The light-weight dock gives thumb sticks on either side along with the XYAB buttons on the right side, with a D-Pad on the left. There are also shoulder and trigger buttons on either side, giving players the full controller experience. The GameVice will cost Rs 5,999 and is an ideal companion for anyone who buys the ROG phone for gaming. GameVice Joystick is a lightweight gaming solution The accessory gives you thumb sticks, XAYB buttons and shoulder buttons ROG Desktop Dock This one is for those who take their gaming seriously. The ROG team at Asus wasn’t messing around when they made this dock. Plonk your ROG phone sideways onto this dock and you will have access to four USB 3.0 ports on the back alongside a gigabit ethernet port. There is also an HDMI port and a DisplayPort that support 4K monitors. Right next to them are the microphone and headphone jacks. On the side is another display port, a USB 3.0 port and an SD card reader. The dock of course requires power to be delivered to it, which can be done using the supplied cable. The ROG dock which can turn your ROG phone into a desktop gaming experience will cost you Rs 12,999 Connect your 4K monitor, a keyboard and gaming mouse to the ROG Phone The ROG Desktop Dock offers more ports than you'll know what to do with An additional DisplayPort on the side ROG Professional Dock Now this was not announced or shown at Computex, but the professional dock is essentially a dongle that gives users access to a host of ports like USB 3.0 and HDMI (1080p output). Unlike the Desktop dock the professional dock is a more modest and portability friendly option. In fact, if you’re an Apple user, this actually could be a very good accessory to purchase. We will definitely get back to you after testing this theory out. The Professional Dock is going to cost Rs 5,499. WiGig Accessory At Computex, Asus showed us the WiGig dock which is an ideal mate for the GameVice controller. The WiGig dock essentially plugs into your TV and allows you to cast the contents of the phone onto the TV, but with a latency of just 2ms. This allows for gamers to have a “big screen” experience even when they’re playing mobile games. Unfortunately, the dock operates at 60GHz, a frequency that has not yet been delicensed in India, so Asus is not allowed to sell this particular accessory here. So that’s all the accessories there are for the Asus ROG phone and of them, all but one can be purchased in India. The listings will go live exclusively on Flipkart and while you can get a hands-on experience in some Asus stores, you can only buy the ROG phone (or its accessories) on Flipkart.

OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T start getting OxygenOS update with bug fixes and improvements

OnePlus has announced that it has started to roll out the OxygenOS 5.0.7 update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones. The update will bring general bug fixes, as well as the updated Android security patch to 2018.11. The update will also bring audio codec support that is needed to run OnePlus Type-C Bullets Earphones seamlessly with the OnePlus smartphones other than the OnePlus 6 and the OnePlus 6T. “For those who were on previous versions for OnePlus 3 and 3T, we appreciate your active feedback and attempts to reach out to us. With your help, we have been able to better optimize and improve several key areas. Thank you for your patience and as always, we look forward to hearing your continued feedback in the bug reporting forum,” the company announced on the official forum. As always, this Over-the-Air (OTA) update will be incremental and it will reach a small percentage of users before it begins to roll out for a broader audience. OnePlus is among very few companies to roll out regular security updates to phones which are two year old. Noteworthy is that the OnePlus smartphones do not come under the Android One programme which promises at least two years major updates and regular security patches. OnePlus launched the OnePlus 3 in June 2016 and almost six months later, the OnePlus 3T was launched. OnePlus was among the first companies that rolled out the November security update to its devices. The OnePlus 6T was the first phone from the company to get this Android security patch and later it was rolled out to other OnePlus devices As noted by Google, there are no reports of customers being affected by the security vulnerabilities that it found. The company cited in its 2017 year in review of Android security that 30 percent more devices are getting patches compared to the prior year. Meanwhile, the dedicated bulletin for Google’s phones and tablets lists three security fixes and four functional updates. The patch addressed the picture-in-picture performance as well as “improved stability for notifications” on the Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 devices.

ISRO successfully launches HysIS Earth Observation satellite and 30 co-passengers with its PSLV-C43 mission

ISRO has successfully deployed the 380 kg Hyper spectral Imaging Satellite (HysIS) earth imaging satellite with its "workhorse" rocket, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle. The mission, designated PSLV-C43 was launched from the first launch pad (FLP) at the Satish Dhawan Space Cenre (SDSC) at ISRO's launch complex in Sriharikota. The rocket achieved lift off at 5:58 am on Thursday, 29 November 2018 after a 28 hour countdown. It was a textbook launch with all 31 satellites on board separating from the launch vehicle within 2 hours. The rocket was flown in the "core alone" configuration, without the six additional strap on boosters, known as the "XL" configuration. The core alone version is the lightest that the PSLV can get, and the PSLV-43 mission is the thirteenth flight of the rocket in this configuration. The primary payload, HysIS is a multispectral Earth observation (EO) satellite, and was injected into a polar sun synchronous orbit (SSO) at an altitude of 636 km. 30 co-passenger satellites from 8 countries piggybacked on the ride, and were also placed into orbit.  The launch vehicle used alternating solid and liquid propellants for each of its stages. About a thousand seconds into the flight, the fourth stage engine was cut off. The HysIS satellite was separated at this point, after which the rocket coasted at an altitude of 640 km. The fourth stage was then fired twice, with another engine cutoff in between. During the course of this maneuver, the altitude of the rocket was lowered to 504 km. 6500 seconds into the flight, the first co-passenger satellite separated. All the remaining satellites were deployed over the next 200 seconds. Over the duration of the flight, the PSLV reached a peak inertial velocity of 7609 m/s.     HysIS EO satellite The HysIS satellite has two imaging instruments on board. The two instruments will observe the earth in the Visible Near Infrared (VNIR) and the Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Commercial, off the shelf VNIR sensors from a commercial foreign customer did not meet the requirements of ISRO in terms of charge handling capacity, signal to noise ratio and pixel size. For this reason, the space agency went ahead to produce its own VNIR sensor. The Space Applications Center (SAC) in Ahmedabad collaborated with the Chandigarh based Semi Conductor Limited (SCL) to indigenously develop the Charge Coupled Device (CCD) for the VNIR sensor. 4  There are two solar panels that fold out in space to power the satellite. The instruments draw 730 W of power, through a 64 Ah luithium-ion battery on board. The imaging instruments have a resolution of 30 m and a swath of 30 km. The spacecraft uses ISRO's Mini Satellite-2 (IMS-2) platform, which consists of a mainframe bus, a payload integration module, surrounded by four titanium pads. HySIS will provide global coverage, and will supplement the data captured by existing hyperspectral imaging satellites. The data captured by HysIS will have applications in agriculture, forestry, geology, coastal zones and inland waters. The satellite has a planned mission duration of five years.  The co-passenger satellites There were 29 nanosatellites and 1 microsatellites sharing the ride with HysIS. The satellites were mostly meant for earth observation or Internet of Things (IoT) services. The Centauri from Australia, Kepler from Canada, HIUBER-2 from Netherlands, HSAT-1 from USA are all meant for remote IoT services. The FACSAT from Colombia, the Reaktor Hello World from Finland, the InnoSAT-2 from Malaysia, the Global-1 and CICERO 8 from USA were the earth observation satellites. The purpose of 3Cat-1 is to test how various technologies behave in the harsh environment of space. There are experimental solar panels, a wireless charger, a camera and a graphene transister on the 3Cat-1.  There were also sixteen earth imaging satellites launched for the USA based Planet Labs. The "Dove" satellites are part of Flock-3r, which is itself a part of the earth imaging constellation deployed by Planet Labs. The record setting PSLV-C37 mission had staggering 88 dove satellites by Planet Labs on board, all part of flock-3p. The 3Cat-1 from the Universidad Politecnica de Cataluna (UPC) in Spain is an academic satellite with a number of experiments on board. The thirty satellites, apart from the primary payload, together weighed 261.5 kg. All these 30 satellites were deployed at an altitude of 504 km. The co-passenger satellites for international clients that piggybacked on the ride, were all contracted through Antrix Corporation, the commercial wing of ISRO.
