Google Bolo education app launched in India

Google has launched a new education app in India called Bolo, which is designed to help primary-grade children learn to read in Hindi and English. Optimised for native Hindi speakers, Bolo comes with an in-app “reading buddy” called Diya to help encourage and aid its users while learning to read. The app is currently available on Google Play Store for free in beta version and works on all smartphones running Android 4.4 KitKat and higher. “Bolo is designed as a reading-tutor app that helps primary grade students to improve their reading,” explained Google Product Manager Nitin Kashyap in a press release. “We have been piloting Bolo in 200 villages, and the early results are very encouraging. We are now actively working with a number of nonprofit partners to take it to more people across the country who could benefit from it.” For installation, Bolo requires about 50MB of storage space on a smartphone. It can even be side-loaded, commented Kashyap after the product demo. Once installed it can run without an internet connection. Unlike most Google apps, Bolo can be used without signing in to an active Google account. To help the user learn to read, Bolo comes bundled with 50 stories in Hindi and 40 stories in English. Google plans to add more stories in the future. In addition, Bolo uses word games and in-app rewards to keep the user motivated to learn more. Google has launched Bolo specifically for India in an effort to bridge the learning gap in education. During the product presentation, the company presented data collected from the annual ASER 2018 report to show that of all students enrolled in grade 5 in rural India, only about half of them can confidently read a grade 2-level textbook. The new Bolo app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for free.

Researchers discover a new Spoiler flaw in Intel CPUs

Highlights Security researchers have discovered a new vulnerability in Intel Chips. The vulnerability is called Spoiler. Intel was made aware of Spoiler in December. Security researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the University of Lübeck have published a paper outlining a vulnerability on Intel processors. The vulnerability only affects Intel chips and not AMD or ARM chips. The vulnerability affects Intel chips all the way back to the first generation of Core CPUs. According to the researchers, the potential attack vector is similar to Spectre, but not subject to the same mitigations. Just to be clear, Spectre and Spoiler are 2 different attacks.  The vulnerability affects “Speculative execution”. According to Wikipedia, Speculative execution “is an optimization technique where a computer system performs some task that may not be needed. Work is done before it is known whether it is actually needed, so as to prevent a delay that would have to be incurred by doing the work after it is known that it is needed. If it turns out the work was not needed after all, most changes made by the work are reverted and the results are ignored. The objective is to provide more concurrency if extra resources are available. This approach is employed in a variety of areas, including branch prediction in pipelined processors, value prediction for exploiting value locality, prefetching memory and files, and optimistic concurrency control in database systems.” The researchers say that how a PC’s memory works could be exploited by Spoiler. This could expose data from running programs. According the the researchers the only way to completely protect a system from Spoiler is by redesigning the silicon. This could be at the expense of overall performance. The researchers said, "There is no software mitigation that can completely erase this problem."  Intel was made aware of Spoiler in December. Intel told PC gamer, "Intel received notice of this research, and we expect that software can be protected against such issues by employing side channel safe software development practices. This includes avoiding control flows that are dependent on the data of interest. We likewise expect that DRAM modules mitigated against Rowhammer style attacks remain protected. Protecting our customers and their data continues to be a critical priority for us and we appreciate the efforts of the security community for their ongoing research."  Read More: Intel makes Thunderbolt 3 royalty-free, will be the foundation for upcoming USB4 standard Acer deemed as 2018's top PC gaming laptop brand in terms of units shipments by IDC AMD Radeon VII graphics card launched at Rs 54,990

However, the new offers come at a time when reports regarding the company’s next flagship device, the OnePlus 7, are starting to pop up.   Well-known tipster Steve McFly, @OnLeaks, recently outed a render video and some images of the purported OnePlus 7. Going by the leaked renders, OnePlus might go with the trend and integrate a pop-up front camera behind the display, which would enable removal of the notch and hence, a near bezel-free design. Additionally, OnePlus is known to integrate technologies used by its sister companies Oppo and Vivo, and both the phone makers recently announced their newest handsets that features a pop-up selfie camera. So, while not confirmed, OnePlus might borrow the pop-up camera tech. Coming back to the leak, the OnePlus 7 is said to feature a 6.5-inch display. On the back are three vertically stacked cameras, below which is an LED flash. The power button and alert slider are placed on the phone’s right edge, while the volume rockers are on the left edge. The device could is also speculated to come equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor.  Related Reads: OnePlus 7 leaked in renders and detailed video with motorised pop-up selfie camera, triple rear cameras, and a bezel-less display
