Lenovo patents foldable device that folds vertically

Highlights Lenovo's foldable phone will fold vertically. The folding crease will be on the lower part, imitating a clamshell design. The phone will also have a second screen on the back. Foldable smartphones are slowly permeating into the mainstream with the Huawei Mate X and the Samsung Galaxy Fold going on sale in the few weeks across regions. Oppo and Xiaomi have also officially admitted to be working on their versions. Meanwhile, Lenovo is also dabbling with the idea of making a foldable phone, but in a different way. Reminiscent of the Moto Razr, Lenovo will apparently launch a phone that folds vertically. Motorola’s parent company Lenovo had filed for a patent at WIPO of a foldable device with a vertical fold. New renders now reveal how the device will look like. Lenovo or Motorola’s foldable phone will have a big hinge on the back. It will let users choose the point where to flex, so you can either fold it halfway or totally full. The flexible hinge will enable a clamshell design which could probably be the Moto Razr of the future. Once unfolded, the phone will have an elongated screen. It won’t be as wide as other foldable phones, and it can be easily operated using one hand. The edges around the display will also be kept minimal if the renders are anything to go by. There is a place for a receiver on the top along with a front camera on the top border. The renders also reveal the foldable phone will have a second screen, on the back. It appears when you fold the phone shut. Interestingly, the Razr Phone that was patented last year also had a second screen. Curiously enough, the crease where the phone folds is not in the middle. It’s near the bottom and can be bent to reduce the size of the phone. Notably, Lenovo is not the only one working on such a design. ZTE and Oppo are also considering the idea of uneven fold design. It’s unclear when the device will be officially announced by Lenovo/Motorola. An earlier report had tipped the Moto Razr will reborn in 2019 summer and is expected to retail for around $1500 (roughly Rs 1,00,000). Apple may launch three OLED-based iPhones in 2020: Report

Highlights: Apple tipped to use three OLED panels in 2020 iPhones. There is no confirmation on the display provider. In 2019, Apple is tipped to ship 180-190 million iPhones. We have already seen a lot of leaks about the iPhone that Apple will launch this year, but a report confirms some previously leaked details of the upcoming iPhone expected in 2019. Digitimes reports that Apple is planning to launch three iPhones in 2020 with OLED displays in 5.42-inch, 6.06-inch and 6.67-inch sizes. Citing sources from Taiwan's handset component supply chain, the publication says that there is no clarity on the display provider. The 5.42-inch model is said to release with either Samsung Display's Y-Octa or LG Display's TOE touch technology, the sources were cited as saying. They also said that both touch solutions are said to cut the display cost. Y-Octa is a flexible AMOLED display technology that removes the film substrate and allows the touch circuit to be directly patterned on the film's encapsulation layer, making the display thinner, the sources said. “Judging from technology ability, Samsung Display is likely to remain the primary OLED panel supplier of Apple in 2020, and it remains to be seen whether LG Display or BOE Technology can obtain OLED panel orders from Apple,” the sources were quoted as saying. On the 2019 models, the report said that Apple will not change its strategy and will incorporate the same display technology and sizes as the current generation, that is, two OLEDs in 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch sizes and one 6.1-inch LCD panel. Apple recently announced that it has already started assembling the iPhone 7 in India. The company said that Taiwan-based Wistron, which has its facility in Bengaluru, will now assemble the iPhone 7 alongside the iPhone 6s. Foxconn, the other iPhone manufacturer, is reportedly starting the trial production of the latest iPhones in India. Citing industry sources, Bloomberg reported that the trial run of the iPhone X range of devices will come before Foxconn starts full-scale assembly at its factory in Chennai. “Seen from Cupertino the India market looks minuscule so Apple’s strategy has been myopic. They haven’t capitalized on the ground potential - India will cross half-billion smartphone users this year,” Neil Shah, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, was quoted as saying. In January-February 2019, Apple shipped about 150,000 devices in India and is likely to see about a 50 percent drop in the March quarter from the year earlier, according to Shah. With regard to iPhone sales in 2019, the Digitimes sources estimated that the Cupertino-based giant is likely to ship 80-82 million iPhones in the first half of 2019, and nearly 180-190 million units in the whole year globally. Space debris by ASAT will burn out in six months: ISRO scientist after NASAs rebuke

Highlights ISRO scientist says the space debris created by ASAT demonstration will burn out in six months. This comes after NASA  administrator Jim Brindenstine pointed out repercussions of Mission Shakti. Indian recently demonstrated its capabilities of destroying low orbit satellite using an anti-satellite missile system. India became the fourth nation in the world to be capable of achieving the feat via  Anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) and the operation was named Mission Shakti. However, NASA head Jim Bridenstine had condemned the act saying that it resulted in the creation of 400 pieces of space debris that are posing a threat to the International Space Station, and the astronauts that reside within it. In response, Tapan Misra, a senior adviser to the ISRO chairman said that the missile destroyed the satellite at about 300km in space where the wind pressure is low and the debris will be burned out in a span of six months.  Misra is the former director of Ahmedabad-based Space Applications Centre (SAC), which is an arm of ISRO that is working on India’s Gaganyaan space mission. The Indian Express reports that replying to a query on NASA’s concern at an open session at the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Misra claimed that the ASAT experiment carried out by DRDO was “not an explosion”, but was more like a “bullet.” Additionally, Misra added that much of the existing space debris is already being tracked by different countries via a network of telescopes, cameras and radars. “They are cooperating with each other… If you see space debris (in a collision course), you can always change the course of the satellite.”  China was the third nation to be able to destroy low orbit satellites. “The Chinese did an experiment at 800-kilometer altitude where the air pressure is not much. The debris is still flying around,” Misra said. “Knowing the ability of the Indian scientists, I am sure they have done it the right way, with all calculations and in a way that will not cause any shame to India. Because it is in the 300-kilometer range, it will dissipate much faster.”  Related Reads: Mission Shakti: India demonstrates anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon, becomes fourth space warfare-ready country   Indian ASAT demonstration criticised by NASA, 400 pieces of space debris threaten ISS
