Google employee reveals Pixel 4 is undergoing testing

Highlights:
The Google Pixel 4 was once again spotted on AOSP Commits. The Pixel 4 is undergoing testing by Google developers. The device is expected to come with dual rear and front cameras.

The Google Pixel 4 that is expected to launch in the second half once again surfaced on commit changes spotted on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) Gerrit, giving yet another confirmation that the flagship is indeed going to launch this year. In February, the commit changes revealed the Google Pixel 4 might get improved dual-SIM capability. This time, the Pixel 4 was once again spotted on commit changes about an issue in the Linux kernel.

The new commit was first spotted by 9to5Google and was made by a Google employee on April 2. It talks about fixing “false positive KASAN warning on suspend/resume”. Essentially, that means an error in fixing bugs that gives false positives. KASAN stands for KernelAddressSanitizer and is a dynamic memory error detector that finds use-after-free and out-of-bound errors in the Linux kernel. The bugs that KASAN detects are onces that send an error report even when there’s no such issue in the first place.

About this kernel tool, the Google employee commented, “The plan was to first deploy this on Pixel 3 and make sure that everything actually works. Then move on to Pixel 4 and so on. If I had a Pixel 4 device, I probably wouldn’t have bothered with 4.9 in the first place.”

The above comment might only make sense to an Android developer and might not be of importance to the general public, but it does indicate that the Google Pixel 4 is under testing. Google employees are working on resolving bugs and issues with the device.

The Google Pixel 4 has surfaced online before as well. While the launch is still far away, an earlier AOSP commit had revealed the Pixel 4 will enable Dual SIM Dual Standby protocol and an alleged schematic of the Pixel 4 XL show a punch-hole design like the Samsung Galaxy S10, with uniform bezels around the edges. The schematic also revealed the Pixel 4 might come with dual cameras on both the front and back, which should be interesting to see. Furthermore, there could an in-display fingerprint sensor in the upcoming flagship.

Related Read:

Google Pixel 4 with Android Q could finally support Dual SIM Dual Standby

Google Pixel 4 XL could sport punch-hole for selfie camera

Facebook app developers leaked over 540 million user records: Report

Highlights:
A recent report reveals datasets from two more sources have leaked. Both were discovered on an Amazon cloud server. They contain personal data fields like user ID and password.

A couple of weeks ago, a report by KrebsOnSecurity revealed that Facebook had a copy of hundreds of millions of user passwords stored unencrypted in plain text format—practically an invitation to every social identity attacker out there. Much before that, Facebook was taken to task for the infamous Cambridge Analytica incident. Now, however, a report by UpGuard says that datasets of two more third-party Facebook app developers have been found exposed on public internet. The datasets contain over 540 million records of comments, likes, reactions, account names and IDs, etc.

Found on an Amazon cloud server, the datasets originate from two sources: one from a Mexico-based company called Cultura Colectiva and another from an app called “At the Pool”. The dataset from Cultura Colectiva has over 540 million records and is 146 gigabytes in size. The dataset found on the “At the Pool” app reportedly contained record fields for fk_user_id, fb_user, fb_friends, fb_likes, fb_music, fb_movies, fb_books, fb_photos, fb_events, fb_groups, fb+checkins, fb_interests, password, and others.

“As Facebook faces scrutiny over its data stewardship practices, they have made efforts to reduce third party access. But as these exposures show, the data genie cannot be put back in the bottle. Data about Facebook users has been spread far beyond the bounds of what Facebook can control today. Combine that plenitude of personal data with storage technologies that are often misconfigured for public access, and the result is a long tail of data about Facebook users that continues to leak,” UpGuard writes confidently in its report.

This, by any measure, is not the first time Facebook has been called out for breach of privacy of personal user data. The popular social media company has been criticised in the past for either giving away data records of user accounts to third parties or letting it get away because of insufficient security measures. The most famous case involved Cambridge Analytica harvesting information on users through a seemingly innocent quiz app last year.

Related Read:

Facebook stored millions of passwords in plain text for several years: Report

Facebook to alert 87mn users hit by Cambridge Analytica data breach

Apple iPhone XR prices to temporarily drop from April 5 under promotional offer

Highlights:
Apple announces promotional price cut for iPhone XR. The offer starts from April 5; the MRP on the website is the same as the launch price. HDFC customers can also avail 10% cashback on debit and credit cards.
Apple has announced a temporary price cut on all the three variants of the iPhone XR (Review) under a promotional offer. The company said that the offer will start from April 5 and will run till the stocks last. For HDFC Bank customers, the phone will be available for further lower prices as compared to the non-HDFC customers. Moreover, Apple has also bundled some offers like cashback and No Cost EMI.

All the iPhone XR variants have got a price cut of approximately 18-22 percent. The iPhone XR 64GB, which is priced at Rs 76,900, will be available for Rs 59,900 to non-HDFC customers. For HDFC customers, the variant will be available for Rs 53,900. Similarly, the iPhone XR 128GB priced at Rs 81,900 will be available for Rs 64,900 (for non-HDFC customers) and Rs 58,400 (for HDFC customers). The iPhone XR 256GB is priced at Rs 91,900, but for non HDFC customers, it will be available for Rs 74,900 and HDFC customers can get it for Rs 67,400.

The promotional offers include 10 percent cashback on HDFC Bank debit and credit cards and the offer accepts zero payment. Further, the cashback is available for customers making a full swipe on credit or debit cards. Those who are interested in buying the phone can also avail a No Cost EMI loans from Bajaj Finance Ltd. and HDFC Bank Consumer Loans.

The move can be seen as Apple’s strategy to boost sales and address growing price competitiveness in the segment. Samsung has already launched a watered-down version of its Galaxy S10 flagship in the form of the Galaxy S10e and reports have suggested that the rumoured Google Pixel 3a will also be cheaper than the iPhone XR. Apart from being mired in legal controversies, Apple is also facing the brunt of US-China trade tensions.

On the top of that, the high cost of iPhones and intense competition from Chinese smartphone makers has been the main reason for Apple’s worst performance since 2014 in India. Last year, company CEO Tim Cook said that Apple's India business grew from $100-200 million a few years ago to over $2 billion in 2016 and flattened out after that. Apple considers India an important market but still doesn’t want to sell cheaper iPhones in India.

Related Read:

Samsung Galaxy S10e vs Apple iPhone XR: Comparing the cheaper premium flagship phones

Apple iPhone 7 is now being assembled by Wistron in India

Apex Legends update 11 which reset players account has been fixed

Highlights
Apex Legends update 1.1 went live 10 a.m. PT (10:30 PM IST). The update reset players accounts causing them to lose all progress. The error caused due to the update has been fixed.

Apex legends update 1.1 went live and players that logged in to play the game were greeted with accounts where all their progress was lost. Thankfully, the curse is undone and player progress is back where it belongs. Apparently, when the 1.1 updates went live, player progress data was moved to the wrong servers. The fix was quite easy and all players data is back.

Respawn, the developers behind the Battle Royale game have said on a Reddit post, “Everything you've accomplished and bought in Apex up until the 1.1 Patch that went live at 10:00 PST today should be restored. Any in-game purchases and progress acquired during the time between 1.1 going live and the fix will be reverted - levels earned, items unlocked, packs opened, and spent currency. If you continued to play and didn't patch then this will not affect you. Any currency purchased, spent or not, will be carried back over to their original account state. i.e. - if you bought $20 worth of coins, and spent $18, then you’ll get $20 after the fix”.

Now that you've breathed a sigh of relief, here is a look at the details of the fixes and new features the update brings

Quality of Life:
Additional behind-the-scenes improvements for squashing cheaters. Added Mute button during the intro and Legend selection. When using the Report Player button for PC, you now have the option of selecting Cheat or Other. Added informative messages that appear on PC for crashes due to running out of memory or CPU errors best explained by overclocking/overheating. Added better collision to the turrets on Supply Ships. Stability fixes to all platforms.
Bug Fixes:
Fixed issue where the Battle Pass rewards page would not have a default item selected, resulting in a mostly blank page. Fixed bug for PS4 and X1 where sometimes attempting to use a keyboard to chat could cause a fatal script error. Fixed bug with Banner Cards not showing up during and at the end of a match.
Jump Pad Phase Walk Interactions:
Octane’s Jump Pad no longer affects players when using Into the Void ability.
Apex Legends is fairly young in the world of battle royale. The game launched out of the blue and managed to garner 50 million users in one month after launch. The developer has actively supported the game and recently banned 335k players from playing the game on PC for cheating. You can read more about that here.
