WhatsApp fixes voice calling feature loophole that allowed attackers to inject spyware on phones

WhatsApp has fixed a vulnerability in the app’s calling feature that allowed cybercriminals to inject spyware on people phones, a media report has said. The spyware, called Pegasus, was developed by Israeli company NSO Group that licenses its products to governments to fight terrorism and crime. According to The Financial Times, which first reported the development, the spyware could be installed on iPhones as well as on Android devices; all an attacker has to do is make a WhatsApp call to the target.

The company says that it fixed the vulnerability on Sunday and issued a patch for customers on Monday. “This attack has all the hallmarks of a private company known to work with governments to deliver spyware that reportedly takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems. We have briefed a number of human rights organisations to share the information we can, and to work with them to notify civil society,” the company said without naming NSO Group.

WhatsApp, an instant messaging app used by 1.5 billion people worldwide, disclosed the issue to the US Department of Justice last week, Financial Times cited a person familiar with the matter, as saying. Meanwhile, NSO said that it had carefully “vetted customers and investigated any abuse.” The company also says that it is investigating the issue. “Under no circumstances would NSO be involved in the operating or identifying of targets of its technology, which is solely operated by intelligence and law enforcement agencies. NSO would not, or could not, use its technology in its own right to target any person or organisation,” NSO was quoted as saying.

Pegasus is NSO’s flagship programme that can turn on a phone’s microphone and camera, and collect location data. The company has Middle Eastern and Western intelligence agencies as its customers. It is suspected that the attack was launched by a Middle Eastern country to allegedly suppress the criticism of its human rights practices. The report said that in the past, human rights campaigners in the Middle East have received text messages over WhatsApp that contained links that would download Pegasus to their phones.

As late as on May 12, there was an attempt to compromise the phone of a UK-based human rights lawyer who helped a Saudi dissident in Canada, and sue NSO in Israel. John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, said the attack had failed. “We had a strong suspicion that the person’s phone was being targeted, so we observed the suspected attack, and confirmed that it did not result in infection,” added Scott-Railton.

This interactive map tracks 5G rollouts in cities across the world

5G or the Fifth Generation network technology is finally becoming mainstream this year. Not only have multiple smartphone makers like Samsung, Huawei, LG, Xiaomi, Oppo and others launched 5G-ready smartphones, infrastructure for the technology has already been put in place and we are witnessing both limited and commercial rollouts of the high-speed, low-latency network across the world. While 5G is still a while away from commercial rollout in India (expected by 2020-21), the network is already being implemented in the US, Europe, Australia and other more developed parts of the world.

To keep track of 5G’s rollout across the globe, Speedtest-maker Ookla has rolled out a global 5G Map which tracks network deployment and operator status for 5G anywhere and everywhere. The interactive 5G map created by Ookla is updated weekly to add newer locations where 5G networks are being deployed. Individual pins on the map indicate countries where 5G has been rolled out and one can zoom into the interactive map to further see which cities have 5G penetration and to what extent. The map also displays information on operators who have rolled out 5G and the status of rollout is divided into two parts: limited and commercial. Ookla explains that “Limited availability is when a 5G network is present but devices are limited to select users, usually in a testing environment, and Commercial availability refers to a 5G network where any consumer can purchase a device for use on this network.”

Ookla says that the 5G Map currently features identified deployments based on corporate press releases and other publicly available communications. Ookla’s own data will eventually be used once consumers start performing 5G speed tests on their devices using Ookla’s Speedtest tool. So far, Ookla has identified 303 5G deployments around the world, provided by 20 operators in 294 cities.

5G operators and city-wise rollout

As per Ookla’s data, Swiss operators Swisscom and Sunrise lead in 5G deployments by making the network accessible in a combined total of 225 cities, each with commercial availability. 21 cities in the United States have 5G availability as of now. Two of these rollouts are being launched by AT&T with limited availability. Verizon launched their 5G network with commercial availability in two Midwest cities: Chicago and Minneapolis. 16 cities in South Korea have limited 5G availability and 2 have commercial availability. In South Korea, 5G availability is being served by SK Telecom, LG Uplus and KT Telecom.

In Australia, Telstra and Optus provide limited availability 5G networks in 12 cities. The Ookla 5G Map also tracks 5G rollouts in a number of European countries (Estonia, Finland, Spain and Italy) as well as in Qatar, South Africa and United Arab Emirates.

Twitter says a bug accidentally shared location data of some iOS users

Twitter has disclosed that it recently discovered a bug, which was collecting and sharing location data for some iOS users. The data was apparently being shared with one of Twitter’s “trusted partners” in certain situations. As per the company’s blog post, there was a flaw in the precise location feature. If one used more than one Twitter account on Twitter for iOS and turned on the precise location option for one account, the platform would collect precise location data for any other account that was used on the same device, even if the user didn’t opt into the feature. Twitter says the problem is fixed and those users whose data was shared are being notified as well.

The problem was not only that the feature was inadvertently collecting location data, but it was also sending it to an unnamed Twitter partner. Twitter says that the data was shared during an advertising process known as real-time bidding. However, the micro-blogging platform claims no precise location data of any of its users was shared since it uses measures to “fuzz” the shared data so that only a ZIP code or city level(5 km squared) can be known. “This location data could not be used to determine an address or to map your precise movements. The partner did not receive data such as your Twitter handle or other unique account IDs that could have compromised your identity on Twitter,” states Twitter’s blog post.

The location data of iOS users shared with Twitter’s partner was said to be retained for a short time and deleted “as part of their normal process”. While Twitter says everything is fine and dandy, there’s no info on how long the bug was sending location data and how many users were affected. Additionally, the name of its ‘trusted’ partner that was receiving this data was not revealed. TechCrunch says Twitter has denied sharing this information and said it won’t be disclosed.

The iPhone XR was the first Apple device to sport a notched 5.8-inch Super Retina HD display. The handset is equipped with dual 12MP wide angle and telephoto cameras and features a 7MP TrueDepth camera on the front. Powered by the now dated A11 Bionic chip, the handset still makes for a good daily driver with all flagship features.
