You can now enjoy Spotify on your PS4 and PS3 in India

PS4 and PS3 users can now enjoy Spotify on their consoles. Apart from India, Spotify via PlayStation Music is available in Colombia, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, and Lebanon. The PlayStation blog reads, “With more than 50 million songs and 3 billion playlists, there are plenty of music choices for gamers to listen to while playing. You can access Spotify’s free service on PlayStation Music through your PS4 and PS3 system.”

Users who don't have a Spotify account can subscribe to Spotify Premium’s monthly subscription service. They are also eligible to sign up for a free one month trial if they don't have an account. Existing users can link their Spotify account to PS Music compatible devices. Gamers don't need to resort to the console's controller to control the music while gaming. Players can use the official Spotify app for Android/iOS. Players can use the app to select a playlist, skip songs, adjust the volume, and more. PS4 owners can also let friends and family know what tracks they’re listening to using PS4’s share button feature.

A gaming console is not used as a gaming console only. The device has become a multipurpose entertainment box giving you access to popular streaming service apps like Netflix, and more. The system also lets you stream your gameplay straight to the internet without resorting to an add-on device. With Spotify, players will be able to enjoy their favourite tracks while navigating their favourite virtual worlds.

If you are an Xbox One gamer, then worry not. The Spotify app is available for the Xbox One as well and brings with it the same features like app controls. The Xbox One dashboard also has controls in case you don't want to resort to the app to control the music and volume when gaming.

Google Maps gets on-screen digital speedometer as optional feature

Google appears to be adding a new feature to Maps nearly every other day. Only a couple of days ago we reported that Google Maps had begun showing some useful information for commuters who take the bus and train (or sometimes both). Now the popular map app has added a digital speedometer feature, which should prove useful for drivers trying to keep their vehicle’s speed in check. The new feature was first reported by Android Police yesterday.

From the screenshots shared by the publication, we can tell Google has added a small widget to the bottom left corner of the main navigation screen. The widget shows the speed limit in the section of the road around the device followed by the vehicle’s current speed. The unit of speed shown below it is either miles per hour or kilometres per hour, depending on the region or user’s preference. Note that the feature is available only when Maps is used in navigation mode for vehicles.

The new speedometer feature in Maps is optional; users who want the little speedo widget while driving must first head to “Navigation settings” in the main settings screen and enable it from the “Driving options” section. According to Android Police, the feature has so far been rolled out only to Maps users in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, the UK, and the US. Users in other regions are expected to get it soon.

The new speedometer feature reportedly works when Maps is opened through the Android Auto app on a mobile phone but not on in-vehicle infotainment systems that support Android Auto. Although users in India are expected to have access to the new feature already, we at Digit.in are yet to see it appear on our mobile devices. Since the feature is probably one of Google’s gradual server-side changes, we can expect to see it in Google Maps sometime later this week.

Instagram introduces data saver feature for Android to reduces image, video load times

Instagram has introduced a new feature on the platform catering to users in emerging markets with low data speeds and patchy connectivity. The feature is also intended for those who want to save on data. To reduce the amount of data used by the app, Insta users will now have an option to restrict the advance loading of videos and high-resolution images on the app.

"Instagram gets people closer to the people and things they love. The community’s power lies in visual storytelling and sharing amazing social video moments. With this data saver feature, we’re hoping for an uninterrupted Instagram experience in slow network areas, which in turn will increase people's interactions with their friends and family," Manish Chopra, Director and Head of Partnerships at Facebook India noted in a press release.

Data is fairly cheap in India, and in some cases free, the data saver feature seems a little too late to the party. However, network connectivity is still patchy and speeds are unreliable, so to some extent, the new feature could be useful for those who want to access Instagram, but do not have quality cellular connectivity. In its press note, Instagram points out that as per Ookla’s Speedtest Global index, India's mobile internet speeds dipped in the month of April 2019, to 121 from the earlier ranking of 108.

To activate the feature on Instagram, users need to go to "Settings," then "Account," then "Cellular Data Use”. Here, users will be able to enable the data saver setting and choose among three options for how Instagram will show them high-resolution media including "Never," "Wi-Fi Only," and "Cellular + Wi-Fi".

The new data saver feature on Instagram will be rolled out to Android users globally over the next few weeks.

Samsung Galaxy A80 listed on India website, launch imminent

We all know that Samsung has revamped its strategy and is now on a smartphone launch spree globally. Under its new strategy, the South Korean company has already unveiled a number of phones this year in India and now, it will soon pull the covers off of the flagship A-Series phone, the Galaxy A80. The handset has now found a dedicated space on Samsung's India website, along with a ‘Notify Me’ button to give users an option to receive timely updates about the launch of the phone in the coming weeks.

The Galaxy A80 (First Impressions) has already been launched in some international markets like Thailand. There were reports that the company would launch the phone in India in May, but it didn’t. Over the weekend, a report said that Samsung was planning to hold exclusive previews of the phone in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kolkata on June 8 and 9. The USP of the phone is its slide-out swivel triple camera setup.

Samsung Galaxy A80 specifications:

The Galaxy A80 is housed in an aluminium casing which is sandwiched between glass protection. The rear glass panel curves along the edges to offer a better grip. The phone sports a near edge-to-edge display that stretches 6.7-inches diagonally, making it the largest display ever on a Samsung device. The panel delivers a resolution of 1080x2400 pixels and a 20:1 aspect ratio. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack on the phone.

Under the hood, the Galaxy A80 is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chipset, which is tuned specifically for gaming. There’s 8GB of RAM along with 128GB storage with no option to expand it. The Galaxy A80 also has the same ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor for authentication that's there on the Galaxy S10. Thanks to the piezoelectric display technology, the screen also doubles up an earpiece by sending sound vibrations while on a call.

In the camera department, the Galaxy A80 sports a triple camera stack which includes a 48MP camera sensor with a lens having f/2.0 aperture. The primary sensor is complemented by an 8MP wide-angle sensor offering 123-degree field of view. There is a 3D ToF sensor for depth measurement. The entire camera setup along with the LED flash and the laser autofocus is housed in a separate unit made of plastic that rises up from the frame - just like the one in Oppo Find X. The camera unit then flips over to the other side becoming the front camera. Samsung claims that the entire motion takes around 1.2 seconds to complete.

Nokia 62, Nokia 52 could launch in India today, Nokia 9 PureView also expected

Nokia has been teasing the launch of a new smartphone in India since some time now. The launch event is slated to commence today at 11:30 AM and the company might be gearing up to announce the Nokia 5.2, Nokia 6.2 and/or the Nokia 9 PureView smartphones. While it isn't confirmed that the smartphone maker will announce three new phones, it is surely a possibility since a launch event is happening today in Italy as well. Additionally, going by the teasers Nokia India is posting on its Twitter page, it is more likely that the Nokia 5.2 or the Nokia 6.2 will be announced in the country.

Nokia 6.2 rumoured specifications

HMD Global may announce a global variant of its Nokia X71 smartphone that was announced in Taiwan a couple of months ago. The handset could be called the Nokia 6.2 and is expected to feature the same specs as the Nokia X71. The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset and comes with 6GB RAM. It is expected to launch running on Android 9 Pie and thanks to Google's Android One programme, it should receive regular software updates for up to two years after launch. The phone was recently spotted on Geekbench where it scored 1455 on the Single-Core test and 5075 on the Multi-Core test. In comparison, the recently launched Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 powered by the same chipset scores 1642 and 5796 on the same two tests respectively.

The Nokia X71 features a 6.39-inch Full HD+ PureDisplay that has punch-hole design. The front camera is placed at the top-left edge of the display. USP of the Nokia 6.2 is expected to be its triple-rear camera setup. The handset is said to come equipped with a 48MP sensor made either by Sony or Samsung. The other two should take on wide-angle photography and depth sensing tasks. The device could feature 128GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 256GB using a microSD card. The battery on it is said to be a 3,500mAh unit with an 18W fast-charging setup.

Nokia 9 PureView specifications

The Nokia 9 PureView comes equipped with a 5.99-inch display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. It sports a P-OLED display that supports HDR10 with 2K resolution and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It comes equipped with an under-display fingerprint sensor as well. Under the hood, the smartphone runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, which is coupled with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The phone runs on Android 9 Pie and is backed by a 3320mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3 and USB Power Delivery, along with 10W wireless charging. The phone does not have a 3.5mm jack. The handset is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance.

In terms of optics, the Nokia 9 Pureview sports five 12MP cameras on the back. Three of the five cameras feature monochrome sensors while the other two are RGB sensors. There’s an additional ToF depth sensor and a dual-tone LED flash in the module. All five sensors sport fixed focal length of 28mm and the smartphone clicks an image from all five cameras simultaneously. Nokia claims that the cameras deliver a 12.4-stops of dynamic range for a more detailed image. On the front, the Nokia 9 Pureview gets a 20MP camera with f/1.8 aperture lens, which supports 4-in-1 pixel binning.

Asus restricted from selling, advertising Zen, ZenFone branded smartphones, accessories in India

Update: According to an Asus Spokesperson, the upcoming launch of the ZenFone 6 in India will not be affected by the ongoing infringement case and will remain on track. Asus will further share a statement regarding the developements.

Original Story: Asus was all set to launch the ZenFone 6 in India, but looks like the company might have to delay the launch of the smartphone, or rename it entirely. The Taiwanese tech company has lost a trademark infringement case to Telecare Network India Pvt Ltd, which claimed that it is the registered owner of the ‘Zen’ and ‘ZenMobile’ trademarks in India. The interim order to stop Asus from selling ZenFone or Zen branded smartphones, accessories and other merchandise was given by the Delhi High Court.

The court noted that the trademarks were first used by Telecare Network India Pvt Ltd in 2008, whereas Asus started using the identical trademarks in 2014. Asus argued that there was no scope of confusing ZenFone branding with ZenMobile, as the former is a popular and known Asus offering. The company also argued that the word ‘Zen’ was a pretty common trade name and is generic in nature. To prove this, Asus presented a search report from the Trade Marks Registry’s website, showing multiple parties with the ‘Zen’ name registered.

However, the court did not side with Asus and said, “though ZEN is a generic word qua a school of Buddhism, yet it is not a generic mark with regard to mobile phones and tablets as the said word has no connection or correlation with mobile phones or tablets.”

Asus has since been restricted to sell or advertise , directly or indirectly, any products like mobile phones, phone accessories, or related merchandise with the ZenFone or Zen branding. The court-ordered restriction on Asus commences July 23. The next hearing on the matter is set for July 10. If Asus is unable to get a favourable judgement from the court in the next hearing, it may have to end up rebranding its entire ZenFone line-up in India.

Digit has reached out to Asus for a statement.
