Oppo foldable phone with pop-up camera spotted in patent renders

We saw some new foldable phones at this year’s Mobile World Congress 2019 event, from smartphone makers like Samsung and Huawei. Oppo also quietly announced a foldable handset that was said to be a prototype and the company’s Vice President, Brian Shen, said that there is no big improvement in user experience due to a foldable screen. However, the company executive asked users to show their interest in the device in a Weibo post. Back in 2018, the company applied for a patent of its foldable phone with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), and as noted by LetsGoDigital, the company has been granted the patent.

The patent filing consists of phone renders of Oppo’s foldable device. However, unlike other foldable phones, the patent hints at the presence of a pop-up camera module. The screen also features thinner overall bezels since the camera is moved in the pop-up module. The renders also suggest that the camera can be operated in both folded and unfolded display scenarios, and depending on the form factor, it can be either used as a front or the rear camera setup. Additionally, while the Samsung Galaxy Fold features a display that folds inwards, the Oppo handset’s screen folds outwards, same as the Huawei Mate X.

The patent renders also reveal the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack on the smartphone. Additionally, it shows off the hinge mechanism Oppo could end up employing on its foldable device. However, since this is a patent, we suggest you don’t get your hopes too high for now as there’s a good chance that the company might not use the technology at all.

Speaking of foldable phones, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is expected to be announced soon. However, the inner display on early units supplied by the company to phone reviewers in the US broke down. The company issued a statement saying that it is looking into the issue but reassured that the phone will be launched soon. While the Huawei Mate X was shown off as an innovative product, the company itself is in hot water since it was placed in the US Entity List. The company is banned from using Android and it is currently under a 90 day grace period to deliver updates to its phones. You can read more about this here.

Huawei PC supply chain severely hit post US Ban, India launch of laptops highly unlikely

After Huawei reportedly asked Foxconn to cut down smartphone production following sanctions placed on it by the United States of America, it is now being reported that the Chinese company is also asking its PC suppliers to halt the supply and developmet of its MateBook and MagicBook laptops. As reported by Digitimes, Huawei has sent notices to its PC supply chain partners asking them to halt all deliveries.

According to the report, while Huawei’s smartphone supply chain still stands strong because of pre-sourced components, the PC supply chain has been “severely hit” by the US ban. Companies like Intel, AMD and Microsoft, which traditionally partner with Huawei to supply hardware and software for its laptops, have been restricted by the US Department of Commerce to do any business with the company.

While Huawei is reportedly working on a new Operating System for smartphones (owing to current Android ban), it does not have an alternative to using the Wintel architecture (Windows and intel). The lack of alternatives in the PC space have resulted in rumours that the company might have to exit this industry completely. Reports of Huawei halting the development of new PC models also points to a possible shutdown of Huawei’s Notebook business.

Huawei had plans of launching its laptops in India as well. Last year, Jim Xu, Vice President of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group had told some Indian journalists that the company will diversify its product portfolio in India, to possibly include PCs. However, those plans could be stalled if the business environment remains unstable for Huawei.

This year, Huawei launched the MateBook 13, MateBook 14 and a refreshed MateBook X Pro. The new MateBook series features hardware from US companies like Intel and software from Microsoft. They also pioneered a feature called OneHop, which allows you to transfer files back and forth between the MateBook and Huawei smartphones with just a tap. You can check out OneHop in action in the video below.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 could launch in two sizes, 4170mAh battery

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is the new focus of leaksters, with alleged details surfacing every few days. Now, through tipster Ishan Agarwal, we learn of some key specifications of the upcoming smartphone along with some model numbers.

This year, it would appear that Samsung is making a shift in how it offers their flagship devices. The company already introduced a smaller Galaxy S10e, and now, It looks like we may be getting two variants of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. Samsung could announce the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, with model numbers SM-N975 and SM-N976, respectively. According to the tipster, both the smartphones will sport a 4170mAh battery, with the key difference being the size of the display. While Samsung is expected to use their new Dynamic AMOLED panels on both the phones, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is expected to ship with a 6.4-inch display while the Note 10 Pro will have a larger 6.8-inch screen. The Galaxy Note 10 will start with a base storage of 128GB while the Note 10 Pro will have a minimum of 256GB on-board storage going all the way up to 1TB. No work for now on whether Samsung will be using their UFS 3.0 storage chips on the upcoming Note.

There has also been speculation about the charging speed of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 10, with some rumours pointing to the possibility of 45W charging. It is now being speculated that the Note 10 models will instead ship with a 25W charger, which is still a lot better than the 15W adaptive charging the company has been using for a long time. Other rumours point to the use of Snapdragon 855 and Exynos 9825 chipsets depending on the region and a center-placed punch hole camera. There is also unsavory rumors of the Note 10 ditching the headphone jack, which would be very unfortunate. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is expected to be announced on August 10.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950x announced, heres how it compares to Intels Core i9-9900K

E3 has been all about gaming, but traditionally, the announcements at this event have always centered around the various consoles. However, AMD took the opportunity to reveal some more news that many gamers would be very happy to have. AMD President and CEO Dr Lisa Su announced the new AMD Ryzen 9 3950x, the flagship processor in the Ryzen 3 family of desktop processors.

What’s the Hype

The AMD Ryzen 9 3950x comes with 16 cores and 32 threads that can run at a top clock speed of 4.7GHz. The base clock on the chip is supposed to be 3.5GHz. However, its not just about more cores or the clock speed. The third generation Ryzen processors are also built on the 7nm FitFET process, allowing the processor to achieve new heights when it comes to performance per watt and also power efficiency in general. In addition, the processor will be fully unlocked, allowing enthusiasts to push the chip even further with regards to clock speeds. It does, however, sport a hefty TDP of 105Watts, and AMD will bundle a Wraith Prism air cooler in the box. The price for all this will be a rather modest $729 and the processor will be available in September 2019.

How does it Compare to Intel’s offerings

One of the reasons why AMD’s new processors are getting all the attention is because, in simple terms, they offer more bang for the bunch in comparison to their Intel counterparts. With the Ryzen 9 3950x, AMD has once again thrown a spanner into Intel’s product line up. The current high-end desktop flagship processor from Intel is the Intel Core i9-9900K, with 8 cores and 16 threads with a base clock of 3.6GHz, a boost clock of 5GHz and a TDP of 95Watts. This processor costs in the $700-$800 in the U.S. range, depending on where you buy it. In India, the price is even higher. The AMD Ryzen 9 3950x offers twice the core count for the same price. When looking for something with 16 cores from Intel, you’d have to go with the Intel Core i9-9960X, a chip from Intel’s extreme series of processors. The chip does offer 16 cores and 32 threads, but at a slightly reduced base clock speed of 3.1GHz and 4.5GHz boost. Not to mention, the processor costs more than twice of the AMD Ryzen 9 3950x.

What about Intel’s Ice Lake 10nm Processors?

Intel at Computex also unveiled their 10th generation processor series codenamed Ice Lake CPUs. Intel had been struggling with cracking the 10nm process node for some time now, but finally, the company managed to crack it. However, the announcement at Computex made it clear that Ice Lake for now, is only coming to thin and light laptops. Intel announced no high-end desktop processors in the 10th generation and there’s not a lot of clarity on when that would happen. Additionally, given the pricing trend that Intel has followed for their high-end processors, we are curious to see if Intel would be able to give the Ryzen 9 3950x competition.

Meet the new AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and RX 5700

In addition to the top of the line Ryzen processor, AMD also announced two new GPUs, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT & RX 5700. The new RX 5700 series is all about providing great 1440p gaming experiences thanks to the new 7nm architecture. AMD has built a new gaming architectured called RDNA which delivers up to 1.25X higher performance-per-clock and up to 1.5X higher performance-per-watt compared to the previous generation. The two cards will feature a host of new technologies such as Radeon Image Sharpening that restores visual fidelity in games (when they have been softened by post-processing). RDNA will also enable DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression (DSC) that AMD claims will deliver extreme refresh rates, color depth and resolutions up to 8K HDR at 60Hz or 4K HDR at 144+ Hz on cutting edge displays, including the world’s first monitor to support DSC: the new ASUS Republic of Gamers 43-inch monitor previewing at E3. The new monitor is capable of delivering 4K HDR at 144Hz with a single DisplayPort™ 1.4 cables. You can see the essential specs in the table below.

Pricing and Availability

The AMD Ryzen 9 3950x will go on sale in September 2019 for a retail price of $749. The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is priced at $450 while the RX5700 sports a price tag of $379. There is currently no word on India pricing or availability, but we will update this post as and when there is more information available.

Google has announced that their game streaming service, Stadia, will launch in November in Belgium, Finland, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the USA. As far as internet requirement is concerned, Google has said that a 10Mbps connection is enough to run the game at 720p 60fps. For 1080p gaming at 60fps with 5.1 sound, it recommends a speed of 20Mbps. For 4K gaming at 60fps with 5.1 sound, Google recommends a speed of 35Mbps. To check if your internet speeds will work with Stadia, Google has launched a speed test website. The website to check the speed is http://bit.ly/2Xyu88g. However, you cannot access this website in India without using a VPN. At our office we have a 50Mbps connection and using the speed test website via a VPN, we got download speeds of 0.72 Mbps which is way below the minimum requirement. Safe to say that you won't be able to run Stadia games using a VPN.

Sony reportedly developing Xperia smartphone with six rear cameras, dual front cameras

The smartphone industry is quite dynamic and phone manufacturers rapidly get aboard new tech bandwagons, be it a new type of notch, adding more cameras to their offerings, or adding AI to almost everything. Sony’s smartphone business is staggering behind the competition and the company recently pulled its business from multiple regions including India. However, it is still operating and making smartphones in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Europe. Now, as per the tipster Max J, its upcoming smartphone might just take things a step further with a total of eight cameras.

While one might think Huawei innovated with a quad camera setup and HMD Global was enthusiastic with its penta-camera Nokia 9 PureView, then Sony might be trying to outdo them all. The Japanese phone manufacturer is reportedly working on a new Xperia branded handset that might feature six cameras on the back. In addition, there could be two cameras on the front. The smartphone is touted to be still in development and none of its specs or any other details has surfaced yet. The tipster also tweeted out an image of an Xperia handset, which seems like the Xperia 1, that sports six camera modules on the back but it is a concept image, as imagined by the tipster.

I heard #Sony is working on a new #Xperia Smartphone featuring a total of six lenses on it's rear as well as two cameras on the front. The device is still in development which means that specs and further things are still unknown. !CONCEPT BASED ON IMAGINATION! pic.twitter.com/mJ83LSNzAc

— Max J. (@Samsung_News_) June 10, 2019

As the upcoming Xperia smartphone with six rear cameras has been detailed in a rumour, we suggest you take it with a pinch of salt. As for other Sony Smartphone news, the company is said to be developing a new foldable phone that might come equipped with Samsung’s flexible OLED display. The handset could be called the Xperia F and could support 5G connectivity as well. If the company does announce a foldable phone, it will not be the first one as Samsung already has its Galaxy Fold on the way. However, the handset was met with harsh criticism since some of the units with US reviewers had to be recalled due to broken inner display.

There is also the Huawei Mate X but the company itself seems to be struggling right now due to being placed in the US Entity List. Huawei has been banned from using Android and it is currently under a 90 day grace period. You can read more about this here.
