WhatsApp bug founder from Manipur awarded Rs 347 lakh, gets mentioned in Facebooks Hall of Fame

WhatsApp has reportedly awarded $5,000 (Rs 3.47 lakh approx) to a 22-year-old civil engineer from Manipur. As per a PTI report, Zonel Sougaijam found a bug in WhatsApp that affected the privacy of a user and made a responsible disclosure about it to Facebook in March this year via the company’s bug bounty program. The social media platform’s Security team acknowledged the bug submission by Sougaijam on the very next day of the bug's submission and the flaw was apparently patched within 15-20 days. Alongside a bounty for discovering and responsibly reporting the bug to Facebook, Sougaijam also got his name ncluded in Facebook’s ‘Hall of Fame’ portal.

"During a voice call through WhatsApp, the bug used to allow the caller to upgrade it to a video call without the authorisation and knowledge of the receiver. The caller was then able to see what the other person was doing, violating the privacy of the receiver," Sougaijam told PTI in a statement. As per the report, Facebook sent an email to Sougaijam that states, "After reviewing this issue, we have decided to award you a bounty of $5,000." If the bug was not discovered and patched, it could’ve been a privacy nightmare for users.

Speaking of privacy, Facebook has confirmed that it will start displaying ads in WhatsApp Status from next year. Olivier Ponteville, the Head of Media at Be Connect Agency tweeted the announcement. It’s not really known how the ads will be regulated on WhatsApp since it uses end to end encryption and on what basis will the app users get to see ads. Currently, websites use cookies to keep track of users, understand what they are interested in and target ads based on that. However, since WhatsApp uses phone numbers for an account, along with end-to-end encryption, it’s currently unclear how ads will work.

Oppo foldable phone with pop-up camera spotted in patent renders

We saw some new foldable phones at this year’s Mobile World Congress 2019 event, from smartphone makers like Samsung and Huawei. Oppo also quietly announced a foldable handset that was said to be a prototype and the company’s Vice President, Brian Shen, said that there is no big improvement in user experience due to a foldable screen. However, the company executive asked users to show their interest in the device in a Weibo post. Back in 2018, the company applied for a patent of its foldable phone with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), and as noted by LetsGoDigital, the company has been granted the patent.

The patent filing consists of phone renders of Oppo’s foldable device. However, unlike other foldable phones, the patent hints at the presence of a pop-up camera module. The screen also features thinner overall bezels since the camera is moved in the pop-up module. The renders also suggest that the camera can be operated in both folded and unfolded display scenarios, and depending on the form factor, it can be either used as a front or the rear camera setup. Additionally, while the Samsung Galaxy Fold features a display that folds inwards, the Oppo handset’s screen folds outwards, same as the Huawei Mate X.

The patent renders also reveal the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack on the smartphone. Additionally, it shows off the hinge mechanism Oppo could end up employing on its foldable device. However, since this is a patent, we suggest you don’t get your hopes too high for now as there’s a good chance that the company might not use the technology at all.

Speaking of foldable phones, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is expected to be announced soon. However, the inner display on early units supplied by the company to phone reviewers in the US broke down. The company issued a statement saying that it is looking into the issue but reassured that the phone will be launched soon. While the Huawei Mate X was shown off as an innovative product, the company itself is in hot water since it was placed in the US Entity List. The company is banned from using Android and it is currently under a 90 day grace period to deliver updates to its phones. You can read more about this here.

Huawei PC supply chain severely hit post US Ban, India launch of laptops highly unlikely

After Huawei reportedly asked Foxconn to cut down smartphone production following sanctions placed on it by the United States of America, it is now being reported that the Chinese company is also asking its PC suppliers to halt the supply and developmet of its MateBook and MagicBook laptops. As reported by Digitimes, Huawei has sent notices to its PC supply chain partners asking them to halt all deliveries.

According to the report, while Huawei’s smartphone supply chain still stands strong because of pre-sourced components, the PC supply chain has been “severely hit” by the US ban. Companies like Intel, AMD and Microsoft, which traditionally partner with Huawei to supply hardware and software for its laptops, have been restricted by the US Department of Commerce to do any business with the company.

While Huawei is reportedly working on a new Operating System for smartphones (owing to current Android ban), it does not have an alternative to using the Wintel architecture (Windows and intel). The lack of alternatives in the PC space have resulted in rumours that the company might have to exit this industry completely. Reports of Huawei halting the development of new PC models also points to a possible shutdown of Huawei’s Notebook business.

Huawei had plans of launching its laptops in India as well. Last year, Jim Xu, Vice President of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group had told some Indian journalists that the company will diversify its product portfolio in India, to possibly include PCs. However, those plans could be stalled if the business environment remains unstable for Huawei.

This year, Huawei launched the MateBook 13, MateBook 14 and a refreshed MateBook X Pro. The new MateBook series features hardware from US companies like Intel and software from Microsoft. They also pioneered a feature called OneHop, which allows you to transfer files back and forth between the MateBook and Huawei smartphones with just a tap. You can check out OneHop in action in the video below.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is the new focus of leaksters, with alleged details surfacing every few days. Now, through tipster Ishan Agarwal, we learn of some key specifications of the upcoming smartphone along with some model numbers.

This year, it would appear that Samsung is making a shift in how it offers their flagship devices. The company already introduced a smaller Galaxy S10e, and now, It looks like we may be getting two variants of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. Samsung could announce the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, with model numbers SM-N975 and SM-N976, respectively. According to the tipster, both the smartphones will sport a 4170mAh battery, with the key difference being the size of the display. While Samsung is expected to use their new Dynamic AMOLED panels on both the phones, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is expected to ship with a 6.4-inch display while the Note 10 Pro will have a larger 6.8-inch screen. The Galaxy Note 10 will start with a base storage of 128GB while the Note 10 Pro will have a minimum of 256GB on-board storage going all the way up to 1TB. No work for now on whether Samsung will be using their UFS 3.0 storage chips on the upcoming Note.

There has also been speculation about the charging speed of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 10, with some rumours pointing to the possibility of 45W charging. It is now being speculated that the Note 10 models will instead ship with a 25W charger, which is still a lot better than the 15W adaptive charging the company has been using for a long time. Other rumours point to the use of Snapdragon 855 and Exynos 9825 chipsets depending on the region and a center-placed punch hole camera. There is also unsavory rumors of the Note 10 ditching the headphone jack, which would be very unfortunate. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is expected to be announced on August 10.
